Two of Namibia’s best known accommodation establishments, Ngandu at Sea at Walvis Bay and the Ngandu Safari Lodge at Rundu, will be managed by BON Hotels as of 1 July this year. The Ngandu establishments was started in the 1990’s by Mr Oswald Theart and his wife Corry and under their hands grew to two leading accommodation and conferencing facilities. A 3 000 liters per hour pilot desalination plant at the Sam Nujoma Campus at Henties Bay, fully powered by solar energy, is a tiny step towards delivering desalinated water to communities as far inland as the capital Windhoek. Hohenzollernhaus damaged by fire Eileen van der Schyff One of Swakopmund's historic landmarks, Hohenzollernhaus, was damaged by a fire on Wednesday evening. The building was constructed between 1904 and 1906 and is now part of an upmarket accommodation block. The Swakopmund fire brigade could contain the fire in time. The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage is yet to be determined.

Two of their children are also established in their own careers and could not take over management of the establishment. Their daughter is still studying and could thus also not assist in this regards. The decision was made to enter into a management agreement with BON Hotels. Bon Hotels already operates the BON Hotel Swakopmund at The Dome Swakopmund and the Group is immensely excited about adding Ngandu At Sea and Ngandu Safari Lodge to their portfolio. Desalination Continued from page 1 Namibia's Founding President, Dr Sam Nujoma and a delegation of regional and national leaders, including the Governor of Erongo Clr Cleophas Mutjavikua, visited the Campus at Henties Bay this week, to see how progress is made towards fully activating the pilot desalination plant. Once in operation, this plant will be a world-first project: it would be the first desalination plant fully powered by solar energy and also the first time that desalinated water will be used for growing crops. Sam Nujoma Campus for that purpose constructed a green-scheme. During the visit, the University of Namibia's Acting Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Development, Professor Frank Kavishe, briefed dele-gates on the desalination water pilot project. He explained Namibia is an arid country and periodic droughts are not only increasing, but periods of droughts are also growing. Without embracing desalination technology and partnering up with international partners, Namibia could soon find itself in a water crisis. Professor Kavishe referred to the capital city Windhoek as an example. The city's water demand would reach 30 million cubic metres per annum by as early as next year and the supply and demand situation would worsen countrywide. The pilot project at Henties Bay would not produce 27kw of electricity to power the desalination plant. Seawater would be pumped from the ocean nearby and through the process of reverse osmosis the salt and the water would be separated. The brine (saltwater) which is in essence a by-product would for now be pumped back into the ocean, but future planning also include salt production from the brine. This project in its entirety would lay the ground principle for a network of desalination plants to dot the Namibian coastline from the Kunene River to Lüderitz. An elaborated pipe network would transport the water from the desalination plants inland to communities as far as Windhoek. A system of tanks and booster pumps would overcome challenges like elevation, explained professor Kavishe. A desalination network of the size and magnitude that is planned for Namibia would not only guarantee the country's water future. The water would also be used for massive irrigation projects and farming to ensure Namibia's food security future.

Ministry of fisheries employee commits Eileen van der Schyff suicide An employee of the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine resources shot himself in the head with his licensed pistol in the bathroom of his house on Wednesday 19 June. It is alleged that Emmanuel Andjele (57), sent a text message to one of his colleagues at around 9:45. The message read: “Sorry to leave this way but I can't take it longer, miss me but let me go.” Upon receiving this message, Anjele's colleagues contacted the police. Ship’s exhaust fumes mistaken for a fire in the port
People inundated the Namib Times with calls on Wednesday shortly after the lunch hour, reporting the presence of a huge, white smoke plume in the port of Walvis Bay and that something was ablaze. A brief investigation determined though the smoke plume was the exhaust fumes of a ship starting up. The hot, windless east weather day provided the perfect atmospheric conditions for the plume of smoke to be carried eastwards over the port and even parts of residential areas between 5th Street and Sam Nujoma Avenue.

Flairs for Rhinos The past couple of weeks Namibian Red Bull BMX athlete, Eric Garbers collaborated with the Rhino Momma Project to generate awareness for Rhino Conservation in Namibia. Eric stepped into the rhino's habitat and spent several days in the bush to get the one in a million shot of him performing flair together with a rhino. A flair is a technical BMX trick which combines a backflip with a 180-degree turn. The Rhino Momma Project was founded in 2011 as an effort to fight the dropping rhino population around the world and repopulate Namibia with these magnificent animals. Since then, the Rhino Momma Project has grown into a successful rhino conservation project where rhinos can live freely in the wild. Eric Garbers said, “It has been such an amazing experience working with these rhinos and the team from the Rhino Momma Project. Only once we step out of our vehicles and into their habitat, we realize how magnificent these animals are. It was a truly a humbling experience being up close and personal with the rhinos.” Eric Garbers started the #flair4rhinoschallenge
concept to motivate BMX athletes around the world involved in the fight against rhino poaching. He has challenged all BMX athletes to post a photo of a BMX trick on social media with the hashtag #flair4rhinoschallenge to increase awareness of the current situation in Namibia. The challenge has gained great traction so far with BMX athletes from Dubai and South Africa joining in on the #flair4 rhinoschallenge. During the current drought situation, the Rhino Momma Project needs to feed the animals on a regular basis. The nonprofit organization depends solely on donations which can be done through their website, www.rhinomomma.com Additionally, members of the public can “adopt” rhinos at the Rhino Momma Project and become foster parents for these rhinos for a specified period. We urge the public to get involved and support the Rhino Momma Project to conserve the rhino population in Namibia.

Born in Windhoek on 10 September 1991 and raised in Walvis Bay, Shariefa “Shayria” Gawanas started her music journey at a young age. Shayria, today is a successful Namibian Singer, composer and song writer. Shayria competed and won many local shows. She impressed audiences with her singing and dancing abilities. She went to Narraville Primary School between the period of 1998 and 2004. She was then selected for the FNB Scholarship program in 2004 and attended the Windhoek High School from 2005 to 2009.in the First National Bank (FNB) Scholarship program. She was also a member of KCAC (Katutura College of the Arts Choir) for the years 2007-2009. 2014 2015 she became a member of the DOTCOM group. They were nominated for best Afro Pop and performed at NAMA awards 2014. Before starting her singing career, Shayria worked several jobs to support her family. Her father, Willem Gawanas is her mentor in her music career. In the year 2000 her father created a Gospel group “Three Little Sisters” along with her two younger sisters, Colleen Gawanas and Azariah Gawanas. They were the Gospel sensation in Walvis Bay hosting live shows in town with a keyboard and two speakers. They performed in various competitions, weddings and conferences. Shayria is an intelligent hard-working independent woman who does things for herself. In public she is cheerful and friendly but always analyzing and observant. Shayria started her solo career as female artist and found a strong team of DJs and producers who wanted to work with her straight away because of her willingness to work. Working with Dj Cmbaville who has a vast experience in Namibian music industry with knowledge in artist mentoring, Shayria has also managed to work with other local producers. Producers such as Ponti, Mzee, Blade, Missile Kicks and DJ Stincha is helping to shape her musical career. Now Shayria is signed under Apex Record Label and artist management. Keep me safe School Campaign Rudi Bowe
The national Keep Me Safe School Campaign came into existence after the murder of little Cheryl Avihe Ujaha. Ujaha went missing from her home on 26 August 2018 in KatuturaWindhoek. The campaign was approved by the Ministry of Safety and Security and Ministry of Education. The Keep Me Safe School Campaign serves as a crime prevention initiative to address issues of domestic violence against children in school, homes and communities by engaging learners, teachers and parents. It aims in raising awareness about the danger of drugs. Drugs are presented to the learners, so they know what it looks like and know what to stay away from. The campaign also teaches about the danger of explosives by teaching learners about them with this important statement: “DON'T TOUCH IT BUT REPORT IT�. The campaign informs about domestic violence, self-defence techniques and raise awareness on the dangers of bullying. Learners were warned not to go to the sea alone unless they are under the supervision of the parents. The team that comprises of members from Community Affairs office, Special Reserved force, Gender Based Violence, Explosives, Operations and K9 unitare targeting school throughout the region. The team has visited Tutaleni Primary School, !Nara Primary School, Kuisebmond Primary School, Flamingo Primary School and Duineside High School in Walvis Bay, JB Brand school in Utuseb and Kolin Secondary School and UB Dux Primary School in Arandis. The Team will visit the following; Duinesig Combined School, 19 June Kuisebmond Secondary School, 20 June Tutaleni High School 21 June Narraville Primary School, 24 June Seaside Primary School, 25 June Namport Primary School, 26 June The team will be at the schools from 07:30 to 09:00 in the morning and invite all parents to be at the schools on the days that they are visiting the school. They will then continue with the campaign at other schools in July. Die leuchtenden Farben der Männchen sieht der Beobachter schon von weitem. Die jungen Kwanyama-Männer sind wohlgenährt und strotzen vor Gesundheit; stark ihre Muskeln, glänzend ihre Haut und das Haar, ihre Augen leuchten: Sie beobachten die Mädchen schon seit geraumer Zeit: wie schön sie sich bewegen, wie geschmeidig sich ihre Körper zum Rhythmus ihrer Lieder wiegen, wenn sie die Kalebasse auf dem Kopf balancieren, um am Brunnen Wasser zu schöpfen, wie sie lachen, sich freuen an den hübschen Tüchern, die sie jetzt im Frühling tragen, wie sie die Kühe melken und nach den Hühnern schauen... Die Makalani-Palmen biegen sich unter der Last ihrer Früchte. Dieses Jahr sind es mehr denn je, vor allem aber auch die Zwillinge, die doppelten Makalanifrüchte. Diese gibt es nur in einer guten Regenzeit, und freudig werden sie von den jungen Kwanyamas aufgelesen, d.h. nur die allerschönsten werden gesammelt und zur Großmutter gebracht, mit der Bitte, aus einem dieser Zwillingspaare eine Puppe zu basteln. Eine Ounona, ein Kind. Großmutter Mekolu weiß es, dieser junge Mann möchte heiraten. Dazu braucht er eine Makalani-Puppe, eine Okanona Kashiti. Sie drapiert ein Stück Stoff um die beiden aneinandergewachsenen Fruchtkörper, nur der Kopf schaut heraus. Es ist ihr traditioneller Stoff aus einem leuchtenden Rot mit schwar-
zen Streifen. Halsketten aus Strausseneierschalen Ondjera legt sie um den Hals. Wunderschöne Knöpfe, die sie schon lange gesammelt hat, näht sie auf das Puppenkleid, verziert mit Glasperlen und kleinen Muscheln. Manchmal benutzt sie sogar eiserne Perlen aus alter Zeit, die ouputus. Zwei runde Straußeneierschalen dienen als Augen, Großmutters eigenes Haar klebt sie mit Harz als Kopfhaar fest. Wenn die Familie es bezahlen kann, wird selbst noch eine kleine ekipa, ein winziges Elfenbein-Schmuckstück, das von Mutter zu Tochter vererbt wird, auf den Rücken gehängt. Der junge Mann ist glücklich. Solch eine schöne Puppe hat er noch nie in den Händen gehabt. Sie sollte wirklich seine Angebetete erfreuen. Aber er bringt sie nicht direkt zu ihr, nein, das wäre ungebührlich. Er bittet seinen Lieblingsbruder, diese Puppe zu seiner heimlichen Liebe zu bringen. Wird sie sein Heiratsangebot annehmen? Oder wird sie die Puppe mit seinem Bruder wieder zurückschicken? Ungeduldig wartet er. Kommt sein Bruder ohne Puppe zurück, hat sie das Angebot angenommen. Sie wird der okanona kashiti einen Namen geben, den dann ihr erstes gemeinsames Kind tragen wird… Wenige Tage später kommt die Schwester
Seltene Fruchtbarkeitspuppe der Ovambo aus Holz okana kositi (’Kind aus Holz”) seiner Angebeteten mit der Puppe in den Kraal und überreicht sie mit einem Namen! Sie hat ihn angenommen, sie will ihn heiraten ! Von nun an starten die Vorbereitungen zur Hochzeit. Die beiden Familien treffen sich, die Puppe sitzt immer dabei. Sie beobachtet die zähen Verhandlungen um den lobola, den Brautpreis, der von der Familie des Bräutigams bezahlt werden muss. Schließlich verliert die Familie der Braut eine Arbeitskraft. Der junge Mann dagegen bringt nun eine zusätzliche Helferin ins Haus, die mit dem täglichen Einerlei
des Kraals helfen wird. Nun geht es um die Finanzen der Familie des Bräutgams , darum, wie fleißig dieses Mädchen ist, wie schwer sie arbeiten kann – ist sie es wert, daß man eine Kuh bezahlt, oder einen Bullen, zwei oder gar drei ? (Heute ist ein Geländewagen durchaus mit im Spiel). Sobald man sich im Preis geeinigt hat, wird das Datum der Hochzeit festgelegt. Jede Familie wird nun für sich beschließen, welche Kühe für das Festmahl geschlachtet werden, jede Familie kalkuliert, wie viele Gäste kommen werden. Normalerweise dauert solch eine traditionelle Hochzeit drei Tage lang, die kleine Puppe ist überall dabei und jedesmal bekommt sie einen Ehrenplatz. Sie wird wie ein Kind behandelt, das man sehr lieb hat, wie eben ein Kleinkind. Sie wohnt mit dem jungen Paar in ihrer Hütte und sollte etwa die Hütte abbbrennen, wird man sie retten, wie man ein Kind retten würde. Meine Sammlung von Fruchtbarkeitspuppen ist sicherlich eine der größten Namibias. Ich habe sie eingetauscht unter den Kwayjama, Ndonga und Uluthis. Anscheinend ist diese Tradition während des dreißigjährigen Unabhängigkeitskrieges unt e rg e g a n g e n . M a n konnte keine Makalanifrüchte sammeln, denn das Veld war durchlöchert mit Landminen... An der Atlantikküste,in der Namibwüste “Terra Magica” am Kuiseb Teil 2 Unser nächstes Ziel sind die Dünen südlich des Flusses, also stapfen wir durch den losen Sand den Hang zwischen wildem Sesam (Sesamum sp.) hinauf, dessen hübsche Blüten schon von weitem prächtig lilafarben leuchten. Die Saat von einigen Sesam-Arten kann gegessen sowie Öl daraus gewonnen werden. Immer weiter geht es durch den heißen Sand und wir müssen dabei acht geben, dass wir nicht einen der unzähligen Tok Tokkie Käfer zertreten. Hier im Bereich Gobabeb/ Homeb gibt es etwa 60 Käferarten, davon sind ca. 20 in Namibia endemisch. Oben angekommen erwartet uns ein weiteres Ohh-Erlebnis. Zwar haben wir schon öfters Sanddünen gesehen und auch bestiegen, aber es ist jedes Mal wieder ein überwältigender Anblick. Die roten Dünen, der blaue Himmel, grüne Grasbüschel (Stipagrostis sp.)- wirklich eine herrliche Farbkombination aus dem Malbuch der Natur! Und in der Ferne läuft noch ein Straußen-Paar (Struthio camelus) was die hier im Sand wohl zu fressen finden? Denn außer einigen Süßgräsern wächst hier nun wirklich nichts. Als dann auch noch eine seltene LudwigsTrappe (Neotis ludwigii) an uns vorbei fliegt, da sind wir völlig zufrieden. Die zierliche Namibische Düneneidechse (Meroles cuneirostris) ist dann quasi noch das Pünktchen auf dem „i“. Der Abstieg, obwohl bereits in starker Mittagshitze, fällt uns leicht, denn bei so mannigfaltigen Eindrücken gibt es sehr viel zu verarbeiten. Wir machen noch eine kurze Rast mit Biltong, Crackern u n d Wa s s e r i m Schatten der Kameldorn- und Ebenholzbäume der Campsite von Homeb. Dabei leistet

Weigand uns ein RotschulterGlanzstar (Lamprotornis nitens) Gesellschaft: mit Vehemenz versucht er, sich sein Mittagessen mundgerecht zuzubereiten, indem er eine große Schmetterlingsraupe immer wieder auf den Boden wirft. Anschließend verlassen wir das Flusstal und
stoßen noch einmal auf eine geologische Besonderheit: hier sind am Talrand rechts und links, hoch über dem Fluss, Sedimentablagerungen zu sehen, die zeigen, in welcher Höhe sich früher einmal (vor nur 20 000 Jahren!) große Mengen Flussschotter abgesetzt haben. Welche
Wassermengen waren dafür wohl nötig gewesen? Wie stark oder wie oft muss es damals wohl geregnet haben? Mit diesen und anderen noch ungelösten Fragen machen wir uns auf den Heimweg. Unser heutiger Ausflug in diese Region der so unterschiedlichen Lebensbedingungen, dieser Habitate von Schotterwüste, Sandmeer und Trockenfluß, hatte für uns etwas Magisches, etwas Faszinierendes und doch zugleich völlig Greifbares - wir sind hier sicherlich nicht zum letzten Mal gewesen! Wer sich über die geologischen Besonderheiten dieser Region und von Namibia insgesamt weiter informieren möchte, dem empfehle ich Namibias faszinierende Geologie von Nicole Grünert oder The Roadside Geology of Namibia von Gabi Schneider, beide Bücher in den hiesigen Buchhandlungen erhältlich.

Was - außer das Wetter und der redliche Obolus - hätte weitere Zuhörer locken können? Nun, das was hinter den Kulissen passiert, was dem Besucher meist verborgen bleibt. Es begann mit Henry Grossmann, der mit der Kunstvereinigung unserer Küste ein Konzertdatum vereinbarte und Musiknoten nach Namibia schickte. Dann galt es, Musiker zu finden mit genug Zeit und Lust zum Mitmachen. DENN, die 30 gesandten Kompositionen, von denen letztendlich nur 15 dargebracht wurden, mussten erst einmal individuell eingeübt werden, um dann nach nur zwei langen Gesamtproben konzertreif zu sein. Ein Musiker war dafür eigens aus Windhoek angereist, zwei weitere haben selbst die ellenlange Pad aus der Otjikoto-Region nicht gescheut und sind in

NSA Squash Champs
The 2019 winners
SFC Squash Club hosted the annual Namibian national Squash Championships in Swakopmund over the weekend of the 14th of June. The Chairman of the club, Rudi Koekemoer, confirmed that fourty-six leading squash players from all corners of Namibia participated in this platinum event sanctioned by the Namibia Squash Association (NSA). A total of ninety-six (96) matches were played over the weekend which also served as official tournament to select teams to represent Namibia during the Growth-point IPT tournament in South Africa during July 2019 and in similar international events going forward. The men's championship final was between Norbert Dรถrgeloh and Max Endjala with Norbert securing the title
after a breath-taking sixty-minute display of skill by both players. The lady's championship final was between Judy Savage and Chantel De Gouveia with Judy being crowned as champion after outwitting Chantel with chess-like plays. Hein Bam and Dylan Spencer competed for the B-Division title with Hein showing that fitness combined with tenacity is the formula for success. PISCS and FOX DESIGNS monthly medal Thirty players turned out for the PISCS and FOX DESIGNS monthly medal at the Walvis Bay Golf Club with the Golf just as hot as the 30 degrees on the course. Best overall gross went to Pieter Fox on a good 76. Best overall nett went to Emile Vilbert on a just as good 70 and hopefully a new handicap for his efforts. The 'A' division was won by Johan Niilenge on 72, and the 'B' division was won by Justine Grobler on 74 while Bertie Coetzee Senior won the 'C' division on 73 with probably a new handicap. Two clubs were recorded by Eddie van Wyk, Carlos de Gouveia, Jaco de Witt and Shane Westerdale. At the Swakopmund Open Tienie De Wet was the best performer from the Walvis Bay Golf Club on a net 224 from a 8 handicap. Kevin Wentzel and Stanley Gawanab came in on 230 while Des Benson carded a net 231. Jaco Greef shot 237 and David Peake came in on 253 after a bit of a shocker third round. With these score Kevin Wentzel ended runner up best gross while Tienie De Wet ended up as runner up best net, Stanley Gawanab won the 'A' division, while the 'B' division best gross winner was Jaco Greef with Des Benson the winner of the best net. Pronk won silver at African Beach Games Twenty-seven-year-old Karate champion Suzelle Pronk from Swakopmund has been making a name for herself, and Namibia, in the international karate circuit over the past few years.

This past weekend she once again made her country proud. She came in second for Senior Female Kata at the first African Beach Games in Sal, Cape Verde. Having started karate at the tender age of 5, Suzelle has now been practicing karate for 22 years and is currently a 3rd Dan (Sandan) in Shotokan Karate. Suzelle trains directly under Sensei Valdemar Swart of the SKAI Swakopmund Dojo and has been the Captain of the Namibia National Karate Team since 2018. Suzelle is also currently the highest ranked Namibian Karate Athlete with regards to WKF points, which are crucial if she is to one day qualify for the Olympic Games. This year has thus been an eventful year for Suzelle as she participated in two K1 Pre-mier League Karate Events (Dubai and Morocco). At the 2019 Region 5 Karate Championships which were held in Swakopmund, Namibia, Suzelle took home two silver and one bronze medal. This past weekend, she again made history having been the only Namibian Karate athlete selected to participate in the first African Beach Games. However, simply participating was not enough for Suzelle and she set out to dominate her competition, ultimately finishing second overall following
Morocco's Sanae Agalmam. When asked to comment on her success Suzelle stated, “this was a first for karate and it was an amazing feeling being a part of it all. I am happy with the performance, Coach Llewellyn Manale and I had a game plan (with a coach) and it payed off, but of course there is a lot of room for improvement. The games over-all were very well organized and a great experience. Thank you Coach Llewellyn for keeping me cool and calm throughout! I also want to extend a huge thank you to the Namibian Olympic Committee for supporing the athletes and making this possible”. “The ultimate goal is to keep growing as an athlete and continue representing Namibia as much as posible throughout 2019, and going forward. I hope to better my WKF world ranking by the end of 2019 and in doing so, my first goal will be the upcoming Junior and Senior Africa Karate Championships in July where I hope to improve on last year's performance (7th Overall)”. Suzelle will continue to train with National Coach, Sensei Llewellyn Manale and the rest of the Namibian National Team in preparation for the African Karate Championships which will be held from 9 to 15 July in Gaborone, Botswana.

In the “B” Division Tienie De Wet shot rounds of 78 and 84 gross to put him 4 shots ahead of the field at the close of day one whilst Athol McLean was making his mark in the “C” Division although scores were close with day two left everything to play for. Stanley Gawanab managed to produce an excellent 75 gross whilst Likius Nande out played his playing partners shooting an 80 gross to give him the championship by 1 shot over Kevin Wentzel. At the prize giving Coastal Area Manager of Standard Bank Namibia Ronnie Einbeck thanked all the players for taking part in the tournament and confirmed that without a doubt they will be around in the years to come as he announced the Banks four-year sponsorship for the Swakopmund Open championship. Chairman of Rossmund Golf Club and President of NAGU Marco Swarts thanked the sponsor for their commitment to sport in Namibia, all the staff of the Rossmund Golf Course for the preparation of the course and service throughout the day. Swarts also thanked his Tournament Committee for ensuring that the tournament ran smoothly
and was conducted in accordance with the Rules of Golf. Likius Nande made it five times in a row at the 2019 Swakopmund Open Championship held under the auspices of new sponsor Standard Bank Namibia this past Saturday at the Rossmund Golf Course. A total of 58 players including three Namibian Pros from clubs throughout Namibia entered the mix and took to the fairways to contest in over 54 holes. The golf course was in excellent condition especially the greens that were running fast where the three and four putts were the buzz in the clubhouse. Denis Haimbondi shot the lowest scores 74 gross in round 1followed by Defending Champion Likius Nande and Kevin Wentzel on 77 gross just 3

Muller World Featherweight Champ Rudi Bowe
Delano Müller of Walvis Bay is the new RCFA World Featherweight Kickboxing Champion with a unanimous points decision against American Stan Rakov. It was at the 51st Battle of Atlanta World Championships last Friday. Müller, dominated throughout the five rounds. It was not a difficult decision for the judges This 15-year-old from Walvis Bay has become the first Namibian to win an international kickboxing title belt. Lesley !Hoaëb, from the Namibia RCFA Kickboxing Academy in Walvis Bay, lost his Super Lightweight Champion Fight on points against World Champion Johannes Gottwald from Germany. James Dean Goagoseb from the Swakopmund Fight Club managed to win two first and a third place in point sparring. Stephanie Schoonbee, also from the Namibia RCFA Kickboxing Academy in Walvis Bay, finished first and second in two point sparring contests. Jan Willem van Zyl from the Namibia RCFA Kickboxing Academy in the Kunene Region won two second and a third place in point sparring whilst Ankia Rentzke achieved a second place in point sparring. The talented Giano Alcock won a third place in point sparring.
