At WB state hospital a Panado solves it all Eileen van der Schyff A front page article in Friday's edition, which detailed a woman's horror experience at the hands of a medical doctor and a nurse at the Walvis Bay state hospital, has opened a floodgate of complaints over the treatment people receive at the hands of medical staff at this hospital. In Friday's edition a woman said she went to hospital to have a caesarean wound that went septic treated. It required opening the wound. The woman was denied anaesthetics. She cried out in pain and was reprimanded not to be “a sissy”. When she went hysteric, she was chased away and told never to come back. The septic operation wound remained largely untreated. Following publication on Friday, several people contacted namib times and complained about the generally poor service. Nurses being arrogant and rude, long hours waiting for
treatment and dirty facilities were among the complaints received. One woman, whose relative was hospitalised last week, said her sister was living in fear as rats are making their nests in a certain quarter of the hospital, because it is never cleaned properly. One woman phoned the namib times on Thursday. She was in tears, as her domestic assistant has been ill for several weeks now. Panado tablets and told to go home. “Her health was deteriorating by the day. I could not stand it any longer”, the woman said in tears. Not only was she left utterly frustrated, but she could not bear the woman's suffering any longer. “I decided to take my domestic assistant to a private hospital so that tests and X-rays can be conducted to see what is wrong with her”, the woman explained. Adding private medical treatment is expensive and she and her husband is living in a strict household where unnecessary expenses are cut to the bone. The X-rays confirmed the woman had severe lung infection. According to the woman that was again just the prelude of the next frustrations with the Walvis Bay state hospital. The private doctor gave a prescription of intravenous antibiotics to be administered by the state hospital. “When I gave the nurse the prescription, she started to verbally attack us both, saying that because my employee saw a private doctor, she [the nurse] demands N$100 fine, before admission.” When the woman responded angrily that this amounts to corruption, the nurse replied: “It is policy here”. “When I challenged the nurse about this is policy, and for her to show me black on white this policy, she threatened us with the hospital's security”. Adding they left the hospital, both in tears of pure humiliation and frustration. The hospital did not relent. A few days later, the woman was admitted in the Walvis Bay state hospital but not before paying the N$100 fine. When her employer phoned her to ask if all was well, she reported that she had no blanket and there was no coffee or tea. She was also not yet administered the intravenous antibiotics. She was in excruciating pain, but only got Panados for that. ”We are talking about human beings here. Animals get treated better at the veterinarian than humans do in state hospitals”, said the woman.

The benefit of going green for small businesses Becoming more environmentally sustainable is not only viable for small businesses but could yield even greater benefits as these small and medium enterprises (SMEs) grow. This is according to Gerschwyne van Wyk, Country Manager at Business Partners Namibia (BUSINESS/PARTNERS), who mentions that many SME owners still mistakenly believe, that going green should only become a priority once a fledgling business has managed to establish itself as a profitable enterprise. “In fact, the advantages of implementing sustainable practices and strategies into an SME far outweigh any cost implications. In relation to this, a study by McKinsey & Company1 has revealed a strong correlation between resource efficiency and financial performance among businesses. It has also shown that businesses with well-rounded sustainability strategies are more attractive to investors and funders. As an example, investments by funders into sustainable and socially responsible businesses have increased by 22% in the US and Europe markets,” says van Wyk. He points out that aside from the long-term, positive implications of sustainable business practices, the fact remains that the increasing cost of essential business resources such as fuel, electricity, water and materials are all adding additional pressure to business operations.

There is road construction projects ongoing as well as at least one quarry operation. After some investigations, it was confirmed that the pipeline rupture was not caused by the blast, but was in fact caused by a subcontractor of NamWater. A source at NamWater also confirmed there was no blasting on any of the NamWater projects, as due notice would have been given publicly beforehand. The standard notification is by way of an advertisement in any local newspaper. Similarly, blasting was conducted more than four weeks ago on the MR44 (road behind the dunes) road construction project. The road builder notifies the public on huge information boards as to the date and exact times of any blasting operations.
Van Wyk says that it is not only possible to become more sustainable without breaking the bank, but it also becomes increasingly costly to delay implementing sustainability measures. “There are affordable ways to “green” a small business, if tackled with an innovative mindset. But as a business grows, it actually becomes more expensive to bring in large scale sustainable measures. If business owners delay it for too long, they may find that they have unnecessarily wasted massive amounts of cash throughout the years, and that their operation has become very expensive to convert to “green” measures.” With this in mind, van Wyk states that entrepreneurs can consider any of the following steps when endeavouring to green their SMEs: ·Fit energy-efficient lighting: Although energy-efficient LED lighting can be more expensive, the cost can easily be offset by the fact that these consume between 70% and 90% less energy. ·Insulate the roof: While this may only be possible for property owners, there is a strong case to be made for this measure if renting the business premises. Optimised insulation is often the single biggest difference one can make at a relatively low cost. ·Install solar panels: It has been shown that quality solar panels can reduce grid-based energy dependence by up to 54% over the course of one year. Solar panels are ideally suited for businesses that are in operation for seven days of the week. ·Opt for portable water tanks: Installing a fully functioning greywater system might be beyond the reach of most owners of existing buildings because of the cost of re-doing the plumbing system. However, installing large portable water tanks to capture rainwater is an affordable step towards sustainable water use. ·Use recycled materials and find ways to recycle as much as possible: Recycled building materials are cheaper and more sustainable and can be made to look brand new. Waste materials from other manufacturing companies (such as furniture makers) can also be incorporated in other businesses; and finding opportunities to recycle the business's own resources, all present opportunities to save money, become more efficient and be noticed by potential clients and partners. ·Work with experts: Sustainability has become a specialised industry and one would not be unwise to seek the advice of a service provider that specialises in this field. From architects, to energy consultants and recycling experts, professional help often pays for itself in savings and valuable learnings. “Paying attention to more responsible and accountable behaviour can yield good benefits, and SMEs that embrace environmentally conscious and sustainable practices may find better ways to close the gap between themselves and larger competitors. Building a business on the principles of best practice as soon as possible is imperative for local SMEs that aim to become industry leaders,” concludes van Wyk.

Urgent need for a neighbourhood Watch in Swakopmund’s Tulinawa Sharlien Tjambari
Crime rates are soaring in Mondesa’s Tulinawa- and Oletweni quarters. So much so that the Namibian Police over the weekend called upon residents to get a neighbourhood watch going in the area. This call comes only days after two tourists were stabbed in separate armed robberies in Swakopmund’s tourism district. The call for a neighbourhood watch was made over the weekend during a public meeting between residents of the area and a delegation of the Namibian Police at Swakopmund. A total of 34 criminal cases were reported at the Mondesa charge office for August. Of these five were house break-ins. In July a total of 91 cases were reported of which 16 were house break-ins. Another crime, according to the Police during the public meeting, is theft under false pretense. Constable Kaujova, the Community Liaison Officer of Nampol at Swakop-
mund, during the meeting explained community mem-bers are misre-presenting them-selves in order to get money from others. Constable Dumeni from the Mondesa charge office added these crime figures are of great concern. “We want to bring safety and security into every household, but this is not possible without the assistance of the community. We therefore urge the community to join forces with Nampol and form a neighbourhood watch. We need the community to be the ears and eyes of Nampol and help fight crimes”. It was further explained to members of the community at the meeting that joining
neighbourhood watch programs have benefits. You gain safety skills, have an opportunity to work with the Namibian patrols, for instance joining night anti-crime patrols and you make a difference by reducing crime in your direct area. Neighbourhood Watch is a voluntary program and nobody is forced to join. However, it works in the best interest of the community as it helps to reduce crimes. According to constables Kaujova and Dumeni there is a direct relationship between the reduction of crime in Tamariskia, Vineta and town and the formation of neighbourhood watch groups in these areas.

Two stationary cars severely damaged after a third slammed into them at the road construction site about 30 km from Swakopmund. A Mercedes Benz parked behind the newly received vehicle of Mr. Mark Liebenberg, on the B2 was hit from behind by a third car, a Toyota Corolla, which caused the Mercedes to slam into the vehicle of Mr Liebenberg on Sunday 19 August. No injuries were reported. This, after they were stopped by a construction worker at a site on the B2, where resurfacing work on the road are being done. The construction worker had nothing but a red flag in his hand and a single cone in the road.

These programs can include short courses; practical or theory. Both government and the private sector have a role to play here. An internal survey showed that offenders who took up community work or participated in training programs offered by the facility, were less likely to re-offend and had a better chance of re-entering society fully rehabilitated. It therefore makes sense why the percentage average for first time offenders is significantly lower than repeat offenders. Earlier this month the Uhili Necessity Wellness Trust together with the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology Erongo regional office launched an E-learning Life Skills training program for inmates of the Swakopmund Correctional Facility. This program focuses on teaching inmates how to manage their lives better, reflect on the past and make amends for wrong choices. Furthermore, inmates were introduced to basic computer literacy, anger management, substance abuse and basic parenting, to name
but a few. Eight offenders were selected based on good behaviour to attend the three-month course. “Uhili Necessity Wellness Trust is dealing with helping offenders to pursue excellency in their lives, so that after justice they will be good people with good characters. This will be achieved through the program”, said Penina Haimbondi the Founder of Uhili Necessity Wellness Trust. Indeed, the community can be appreciative of efforts such as these that are aimed at rehabilitating and improving the lives of offenders. A reduction in recidivism is the result. Reports from inmates show their gratitude as they express the positive impact the program has had so far. A call from Haimbondi, for more involvement from the private sector was echoed again at the Swakopmund SME Expo Fundraising Dinner in Swakopmund on Friday night. She called this “the best gift ever - giving to those who do not deserve it.”

A heavy vehicle caused a pipe rupture in Hage Geingob near the intersection with 14th Road early on Friday. A work team of the municipality of Walvis Bay conducted repairs and water supply to this part of town could be restored. Tracks indicate a heavy vehicle drove over the pipe and the sheer weight caused the tarmac surface to collapse and the pipe could also not withstand the weight. Heavy vehicles are one of the main culprits when it comes to damage to public infrastructure like water lines, curbstones, road and traffic signs.

A pod of dolphins became an instant attraction in the Walvis Bay lagoon on Saturday morning, luring a number of marine tour operators’ boats to the area to marvel at these most fascinating marine mammals. Angolan tanker here for repairs on floating dock
A petroleum- and gas tanker ship, NGOL Chiloango (pictured) belonging to Sonangol in Angola has arrived off Walvis Bay and will soon be lifted out of the water for repairs and maintenance on Elgin Brown Hamer Namibia’s floating dock Namdok III. NGOL Chiloango works in the Angolan offshore oil and gas industry and is used to ferry raw product between the oil- and gas wells and refineries. The arrival of the vessel for repairs and maintenance in Walvis Bay is much welcomed by local service providers who are contracted to carry out the work.

Woman denied anaesthetics Chased away at Walvis Bay State Hospital A Walvis Bay woman shared her horrifying experience with namib times this week of how a medical practitioner at the town's state hospital cut open a septic wound without administering an anaesthetic. When she became hysterical of pain and shock, she was chased away without the wound being properly closed up again after it was cleaned. The woman had a Caesarean recently, but the operation wound became septic and she turned to the Walvis Bay state hospital for assistance. To clean the wound, the doctor had to cut it open. She (the doctor) did so without administering an anaesthetic and when the women screamed and cried she replied with the words “I know it is sore, just stop screaming and don't be such a sissy”. The young woman had a Caesarean at the Rehoboth state hospital recently, but sadly the baby died days later. She came to Walvis Bay and discovered after some days that all is not well. The operation wound partly started to open and it was clear that the wound had inflammation to it and was becoming septic. At the hospital, she was told to lay down, expecting the doctor to dress the wound. Within a few seconds she felt immense pain. So severe and intense the pain was that she started to scream and cry. “The doctor did not tell me that she was going to cut open my wound. I just suddenly felt this severe pain and started to scream”, the woman told namib times in an interview at her home in Walvis Bay on Saturday afternoon. Adding she was shocked beyond belief when the doctor made those arrogant and unsympathetic remarks. According to the woman the doctor then instructed a nurse to bring her a Panado for the pain. The doctor allegedly simply carried on despite the woman's immense pain and said all women go through this as “this is the way it is done here”. After a few minutes more, the doctor instructed the nurse, who was standing by throughout the whole procedure, to take over and finish up. The sister then started inserting Betadine gauze pads into the wound, to clean up the infection, before attempting to close the wound. All this with the woman now hysterical and still no anaesthetic administered. The nurse too was rude. According to the woman the nurse said the doctor informed her that she [the patient] has an attitude problem. According to the woman the final straw came for her when the nurse wanted to insert a needle into the open wound. “I screamed as loud as I could, as this was what I could take. It was then when the nurse became angry and told me to get up and leave the hospital and never to return”, the woman explained during the interview. The wound was left open. She is visibly and audibly still deeply shocked at what she had to go through. What also makes it immensely difficult for her is the fact that through all of this she also has to deal with her baby's death. The woman's husband also during the interview told the namib times when he wanted to find out who the doctor was, he was silenced and dismissed with the words: “what do you want to do with the doctor's name?” The nurse involved also did not want to disclose her name. The family of the young woman sent a letter to the Chief Medical Officer, acting regional Director of the Erongo Regional Health Directorate, Amir Shaker, explaining what had happened at the hospital. He replied with an email saying that he acknowledges receiving the email and will answer once he gets all the information from the district. They are still waiting for a reply. All I can say is if it wasn't by the grace of God my child and me would not be alive. Imagine being in labour for 2 days straight being hidden away in a room because they are sick of hearing you moan of pain. I saw my life flash before me while a nurse casually sat there eating a banana. To this lady. I am so sorry for your loss. The staff at that hospital do not deserve to be employed. During her visit to the Erongo region this past Friday, Miss Namibia 2018, Selma Kamanya paid a courtesy visit to the Office of the Mayor. Kamanya is also a Patron of the SME Expo, which is scheduled to take place in October this year. Miss Namibia had the opportunity to tour around the Swakopmund Municipality and also visited the First National Bank's Mondesa Branch and Steckels Toyota in Swakopmund. The learners of De Duine Secondary School had the opportunity to spend time with Kamanya during their Matric Farewell on Saturday evening. Kamanya said the SME Expo is a great initiative which elevates the standard of SME's in Namibia as they are overlooked and marginalised due to more established companies. “This is an Expo that solely promotes SME's and give them a platform to promote their products and services and it is a Namibian initiative, I proudly support SME's”. Cricket Namibia (CN) announced that the National Team Cricket Coach Dee Thakur will take on a new role as the manager and coaching coordinator of the country's junior age groups and development programmes.

Dee Thakur has been the Men's National Coach since 2015 and in this capacity has been responsible for preparing the Men's Senior Cricket Team for all cricketing formats including ICC qualification events. He was also responsible for the high performance set up as well as strategic and operational planning which included assisting with developing comprehensive plans and supporting programs. This was in line with Cricket Namibia's strategic short, medium and longterm objectives for cricket development at all levels. Cricket Namibia CEO Peter Forster said that the move come at the time that the coaching contract between Thakur and the CN expired and we do not want to lose a person like Dee Thakur as he has a bundle of experience and that he have invigorated the spirit of cricket and helped bring more pride to its activities. Thakur said CN saw it fit for him to coach young players, as it believes the value he brings would be suitable for junior players and that his plans is to improve the quality and depth of young cricket players and bring them quicker into the national set-up and improve the level of all cricket coaches in the country and identify players who can be pushed to greater heights. "With the limited funds of the CN they have reached the coastal towns as well as Outjo and Otjiwarongo. Therefore he wants to spread the game to rural areas where it is not played and want to strengthen the sport there before we again move to other places" Thakur mentioned. "As the outgoing national coach Thakur is leaving huge shoes to be filled. CN would like to express respect and appreciation to Thakur for his efforts, commitment and achievements over the past years." Peter Forster CEO said. Forster added that the position of a new National Team Coach will be advertised in due course and that until the vacancy is filled Thakur will be the interim National Team Coach.
Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service, Erastus Uutoni says it is hard to find rugby being played in Northern Namibia despite the fact that the area has strong and talented athletes for the game. Addressing the youth at the Oshakati Youth Expo at the Oshakati Independence Stadium Uutoni said rugby is mostly prominent in Windhoek, Swakopmund and Rehoboth. “I want to see Windhoek, Swakopmund and Rehoboth playing rugby with Oshakati here,� Uutoni told his audience, which included Oshana governor Clemens Kashuupulwa. For rugby to be developed in northern Namibia, Uutoni suggested that a rugby academy be introduced and for local business personalities to consider the provision of rugby facilities and fields. During his visit to northern Namibia last month, Uutoni bemoaned the fact that existing sports facilities were allowed to fall into disrepair in the regions and called on regional leaders to ensure that such facilities are maintained. He singled out Caribbean, a volleyball, basketball and tennis court in Oshakati, as one facility that has become dilapidated. He urged regional governors to join hands with the business community to organise and sponsor sports indabas in their regions for sport advancement. Talented athletes, Uutoni said, should be identified and groomed by means of regional sport tournaments for national teams.
