With the cancellation of the Independence Day celebrations at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek, where the president is usually sworn in, the formal ceremony has been moved to State House. The spokesman for the Presidency, Dr Alfredo Hengari, told Namib Times that the celebrations will be in keeping with the directives issued by government to curb the spreading of Corvid-19 (Coronavirus). No more than 50 people will be in attendance. Heads of state of South Africa, Botswana, Angola and Zimbabwe will be among the attendees. Pres. Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, who is also the current chairman of the African Union, will represent the whole of Africa at the inauguration. “It will be a short ceremony in response to the critical challenge facing our country. Due to the limited number we can accommodate, many people who would normally be present, will this year not be in attendance, but we are still finalizing the guest list,” Hengari said. Members of parliament will be sworn in at the Parliament today (Friday). On Saturday Geingob will announce his new Cabinet. They will be sworn in either on Sunday or Monday as the first session of the new Cabinet will take place on Tuesday.

A relative of a prisoner in his late 50's approached the Namib Times to highlight the dire situation these people have to endure behind bars. “I was informed of the conditions in which the prisoners are kept. Apart from the unhygienic conditions caused by broken toilets and showers, mosquitos and flees are also a cause of great concern. People are suffering bites and they are afraid they could contract some medical condition as a result. Some of the prisoners' relatives and friends bring them food, but that is eventually dished out to everyone, because often there is not enough food, claims the relative referred to above.
“I feel it is not fair and nobody should be allowed to live under such conditions”, said the man. Namib Times contacted a man who spent some time in the holding cells at Henties Bay. “The toilet pots are really broken. Broken like shattered”, the man explained. No visitors are allowed. We feel this is a way to hide the true situation in the holding cells”, he said. He asked for anonymity. How does the state of emergency affect you? On Monday Pres Hage Geingob announced a state of emergency in Namibia due to the Covid-19 (Coronavirus) and announced further measures to strengthen Namibia's response and preparedness. Namibians and permanent residents will be prohibited from travelling for 30 days. Exceptions will be made with prior authorisation from the Ministry of Health and Social Services as well as Home Affairs and Immigration. Exceptions will be made for people seeking medical treatment; essential services like humanitarian assistance; truck drivers bringing food and other essential commodities into the country and Namibians returning home. Compulsory screening will be conducted for verification and quarantine imposed where necessary. Geibgob made it clear that all leisure, business and social travel like tourism is suspended. A travel ban has been placed on foreign nationals from all Schengen States, China, Iran, Korea, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Japan. Geingob gave the assurance that the ban will be reviewed regularly. Scheduled passenger flights, including chartered flights to and from countries where there is active transmission has been temporary suspended. All international scheduled and private chartered flights may only land at Hosea Kutako International and Walvis Bay International Airport. A strict disinfection regime for aircraft as well as training of airport staff on the prevention of infection and control were also ordered by Geingob. All returning Namibians and permanent residents arriving from countries at high risk or from affected countries will be subject to 14 days of supervised self-quarantine. All large public gatherings of 50 or more people have been suspended for 30 days. These include schools, religious gatherings, customary gatherings, weddings, funerals and all parades for uniformed forces. Owners of public transport vehicles will for a period of 30 days have to provide hand sanitizers and masks to all passengers. Accommodation establishments must provide sanitizers and masks to all staff; educate guests on protective measures and have the full travel history of the guests as well as their next destination. Shops, shopping malls and supermarkets must also take steps to enhance hygiene at all times and to protect customers and staff. Confusion reigns in travel industry To minimize the risk of exposure to Covid-19, the government has asked Namibians to suspend all non-essential travel. The airlines SA Express and SAA have suspended flights to Walvis Bay. Air Namibia is however still conducting flights to South Africa. The Manager: Corporate Communications for Air Namibia, Mr Paul Nakawa, told Namib Times that Only the flights to Frankfurt and Luanda have been suspended and that Air Namibia still flies to South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The flights to Frankfurt and Luanda will be reinstated once the threat of Covid19 has passed. “It is not our job to ask passengers when they make bookings what their reasons for travelling are. That is a matter of privacy. “We however request all our passengers to heed government's advice regarding personal safety and hygiene and to respect the safety of other passengers,” Nakawa said. He added that there is however confusion as some immigration officers ask people their reasons for travelling. Reports have been received of travellers who are stopped at the border by customs officials and told that their travel plans were for leisure and therefore nonessential and that they could therefore not proceed. When asked by a journalist about travel to South Africa, earlier this week, the minister of
Home Affairs, Mr Frans Kapofi, clarified the broad directive of the so called travel ban, by explaining that anyone can go to and from South Africa, as long as there is a need for this travel. "We can't dictate to people, but we are discouraging movement. The lesser the activities the better," he said. Kapofi explained that government only encourage travelling for medical conditions, death, emergency or serious business. He added that people arriving from abroad can't be turned away, but they will have to undergo screening and be quarantined. Note: the Executive Director of the Ministry of Health and Social Services, Ben Nangombe, yesterday refuted claims that Namibia's two main borders with South Africa is closed for returning Namibians or South Africans returning to their homeland. Rumours were spread yesterday the borders of Ariamsvlei and Noordoewer would only be open till midnight (last night). “This is clearly border officials who are confused. As long as the two countries keep the borders open for their returning citizens nobody can take that right away from them”, he said. Nangombe undertook to take the matter up with the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration.

Regional Health Authorities prepared Estelle de Bruyn for Corona Coastal residents should refrain from panicking about Covid-19. This is the message of the Chief Medical Officer of the Ministry of Health and Social Services in the Erongo Region, Dr Amir Shaker. "Here at the coast, colds and flu are common occurrences. It will not be wise for everyone with a runny nose to run to the hospital. "If people have a fever of 37.5 degrees or higher, are experiencing a dry cough and have difficulty breathing as well as a history of travel, they must contact their closest state hospital. We advise people who are experiencing these symptoms to not come to the hospital. We will rather send a health worker to the suspected patient to check the symptoms," Shaker said. “Not all people who contract the virus will need to be hospitalised. In most cases people will need to self-quarantine and treat the symptoms at home. Only in severe cases, where people experience respiratory stress, will they be hospitalised and given oxygen. “All state hospitals have isolation units in place,” he said. He is also satisfied that currently coastal
hospitals have sufficient supplies of surgical masks and gloves for medical staff. Shaker explained that there is currently no medication to treat the virus and worldwide only the symptoms are treated. “If people are coughing, they will be treated with cough medicine, if they are experiencing high fevers, the fever will be treated. “The best advice to the community is not to panic and to wash their hands. Do not touch other people. Avoid handshakes. The virus is spread through droplets and therefore social distancing is also strongly advised. Stay at least two meters from other people. This is of course not possible for health workers who must take care of their patients,” Shaker said. He also advised the public to read health directives in the local media and heed the advice ministerial spokespeople give on the NBC.

The six passengers aboard the cruise liner AdiaMira, whom were under quarantine for fears they have contracted Covid-19, tested negative. AidaMira has been quarantined off Cape Town after arriving from Namibia where the ship called at Lüderitz and Walvis Bay respectively. Namport in a statement this week explained all passengers aboard the ship were screened before they disembarked at Lüderitz. The vessel docked at Walvis Bay less than twenty-four hours later. Port health at Walvis Bay decided not to screen passengers again, as the time frame after the screening at Lüderitz was within a twenty-four hours test-window. News that the six passengers tested negative has quelled fears of a Coronavirus pandemic spreading in Namibia. The Minister of Health and Social Services Dr Kalumbi Shangula confirmed this state of affair on Tuesday.

Wenn sie in den Augen einer Frau lesen sollen, sind Männer Analphabeten. Goldie Hawn (*1945), US-amerikanische Schauspielerin. In den Illustrierten und auch in manchen Sendern arbeiten Analphabeten. Das ist meine Sache nicht. Marcel Reich-Ranicki (1920 - 2013), deutschpolnischer Autor und Publizist. Wer in das, was von Göttlich-Geistigem heute erfahren werden kann, nur fühlend sich versenken, nicht erkennend eindringen will, gleicht dem Analphabeten, der ein Leben lang mit der Fibel unterm Kopfkissen schläft. Christian Morgenstern (1871-1914), deutscher Dichter, Schriftsteller und Übersetzer. Auch der größte Schriftsteller war einmal ein Analphabet. Walter Ludin (*1945), Schweizer Journalist.

An der Atlantikküste,in der Namibwüste Locker vom Hocker: Mit Musik Mut und der Pandemie-Panik den Garaus machen Liebe Küstenleser! Vor einigen Wochen habe ich in dieser Rubrik bereits meine Meinung zu der Corona-Panikwelle,die uns im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes lawinenartig zugeschüttet hat, geäußert. Der 1947 in Schleswig-Holstein geborene Lungenfacharzt, Dr. Wolfgang Wodarg, der in Hamburg und Berlin Medizin studierte, Fachmann für Seuchen, Gesundheitshygiene, sowie Internist ist und an der John Hopkins University in Baltimore/USA Epidemiologie studierte, sagt es deutlich in einem Interview: ‘Es gibt fast jedes Jahr ein neues Virus, das seinen Kopf heraussteckt und uns krank machen oder töten kann…aber die jetzige Panikmache ist total übertrieben.’ Das hat er übrigens schon bei der Schweinegrippe gesagt, und er hat Recht behalten. Ob er diesmal auch wieder Recht hat, das wird die Zukunft zeigen. Wer Interesse hat, dem kann ich dieses direkte Interview als Videoclip whatsappen. Das Beste, was ich in dem Wust an Informationen je bekommen habe! Aber Panik herrscht vor. Als ob Angst, so verständlich sie auch sein mag, nützlich ist. Im Gegenteil, sie richtet eigentlich erheblichen Schaden auf mehreren Ebenen an. Wie so oft in meinem Leben, wenn ich das Gefühl hatte, dass etwas um mich herum zu eskalieren scheint, zoome ich mich hinaus aus unserem Erdball und sehe und höre mir, wie ein Marsfrauchen, das Treiben auf diesem Planeten von oben an: amerikanische Panzer, die in Massen auf deutschen Autobahnen zu sehen sind; das Militär überhaupt und die Polizei, die in weiten Teilen Europas übernommen zu haben scheint; Schulen, Bibliotheken und mehr, die
raushören, dass ich kein menschzentriertes Weltbild habe. Viel eher sehe ich uns als Teil eines Kosmos, wo viele Lebewesen gegen das Sterben ankämpfen...die Viren, die Elefanten, die Pflanzen, die Bienen…ich auch! Nur, lasst uns dabei Ruhe bewahren und einander lieber gegenseitig ermutigen und unterstützen! Als vor fast 108 Jahren die Titanic versank, rannten fast alle um ihr Leben - wie heute die Welt vor dem Coronavirus Kopf steht. Es gab aber damals auf dem Schiff auch diejenigen, die sich von dem Chaos nicht erschüttern ließen: Die acht Musiker der Bordkapelle spielten bis zum bitteren Ende weiter. Das letzte Lied, das sie nicht beenden konnten, da sie von ihren Stühlen oder Instrumenten gerissen wurden, war die christ-
Evangelisch-Lutherischen Kirche nicht storniert worden wäre. Warum? Um ein Gegengewicht zu dieser ganzen Panikmache zu schaffen. Es wäre ja jedem freigestellt gewesen, zu kommen oder zu Hause zu bleiben. Indongo Toyota Walvis Bay
Fun for the whole family was the order of the day on Saturday 14 March. Prospective buyers were able to test drive Toyota’s extensive range of Tougher-er 4x4 vehicles on a dune course layed out by Indongo Toyota in the dunes opposite Langstrand. All visitors were treated to a boerewors roll and some refreshments while the kids were playing on the jumping castle. 15 Lucky Toyota owners were able to go on a three hour educational drive to learn more about their vehicles ability and get advanced training on safe dune driving. Standard Bank was also there to assist prospective buyers. Penultimate week of the Contributed Summer League As we head into the penultimate week of the Summer League, it can be claimed that many will want to see what their chances are going to be like going into the final 2 rounds.

TNBC Fundraiser and Dawson Cup 2020 This past weekend saw a great deal of activity at TransNamib Bowling Club (TNBC), when they hosted their annual fundraiser on Saturday and the Dawson Cup on Sunday. Each bowling club affiliated to the Namibia Bowling Association gets a turn every year to host an event to raise funds and thus boost their coffers. The format of the competition this year was teams of triples, playing two games of 9 ends. In each game, players altered their positions in the team for three ends each, i.e. each player had a chance to play lead, second and skip. This made the games very interesting as players often found themselves in unfamiliar territory. As only ten teams participated, the fundraiser was not as well supported as last year but, nevertheless, great fun was had by all. To prove bowls is a sport for all, the oldest bowler was Eric Luff who is 87 years old and the youngest was Danelle van Wyk who is 8 years old. The theme was “It's all yellow”.
The day was ultimately won by Poppie van den Heuvel, Ewald Vermeulen and Daphne Martin. In second place were Colin Peake, Quintin Butcher and Huipie van Wyk and third were Stefan van Wyk, Anjuleen Viljoen and Piet du Plooy. On Sunday TNBC played against Windhoek Bowling Club (WBC) for the Dawson Cup. This is a tradition going back to 1939, when the cup was donated by a Mr G H Dawson. It has been contested every year except during the war years and shortly thereafter. As far as is known, it is the oldest bowls trophy in Namibia. This year each club fielded a men's, a ladies' and two mixed teams. TNBC won two of the games, lost one and drew one, thus retaining the Cup. As is always the case, the games were played in the true spirit of bowls, with friendly rivalry being the order of the day.

Following President Geingob's announcement on Saturday to call off all large gatherings in Namibia, the Namibia Sport Council (NSC) decided that all national and international sporting events will be suspended with immediate effect for a period of 30 days in the midst of the Covid-19 virus pandemic. This announcement was made by the Chief Administrator of the (NSC), Freddy Mwiya. Mwiya added that this doesn't mean that sportsmen and women should stop training, they can still do so on their own, but they should avoid large gatherings. The following sport is been cancelled or postponed till a later date: The 2021 African Cup of Nations qualifier, which were due to take place between 25 and 31 March, had been postponed. The game between Brave Warriors and Mali in Bamako on 27 March and at home in Windhoek four days later has been postponed. The Fifa Women u20 World Cup qualifiers which were due to start next weekend have also been postponed, as well as the Total Women Afcon qualifiers
which was due to start on 8 April. On Saturday, the Namibia Football Association called it's the friendly match between the Brave Warriors and an Erongo regional team in Swakopmund. The Netherlands cricket tour to Namibia, scheduled from 25 March to 1 April, is cancelled. The two One Day Internationals and four T20 matches between the Netherlands and Namibian cricket teams scheduled from 25 March to 1 April at the Wanderers Cricket Ground in Windhoek is has been cancelled. Johan Muller, Chief Executive of Cricket Namibia Johan Muller, said they supported the decision to cancel the tour and hoped to reschedule it in future. The annual Namibian Newspaper Cup which was due to take place in Oshakati over the Easter weekend has also been postponed.
