A man, suspected to be in his early 40s, was savagely beaten and "left to die" in the desert in the vicinity of Henties Bay road. The unidentified man was found yesterday morning by members of the police who are still stumped about what exactly transpired.

Tourists and visitors unfamiliar with local conditions often park their vehicles close to the B2 and go for long walks to take pictures. It is then when criminals strike, as the victims are too far from their vehicles and must helplessly look on as their valuables are stolen. Reliable sources revealed to namib times yesterday that an unknown person phoned the police early in the morning and informed the members about the person lying in the desert. Initially a state ambulance was sent out, but medics could not find the person. A short while thereafter members of the police discovered the person lying in the desert. The person was described as semi-conscious, but was unable to speak.

The three suspects were caught red-handed after they smashed the window of rented vehicle in the vicinity of Langstrand and attempted to steal items worth N$1 500-00. Timoteus Alweendo (29), Mateus Kaunamukweni (33) and Stefanus Iita (33) appeared in court yesterday in connection with the incident. The incident occurred on Friday at about 14:30. Two tourists from Germany parked their rented Toyota double-cab a short distance from B2 main road between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay and walked to the dunes. "While the victims were on top of a dune a white Toyota Corolla taxi (N23669WB) with three occupants parked next to the victim's car", Iikuyu explained. The suspects smashed the back window of the double-cab and grabbed two small bags containing torch batteries, a knife, sun-cream and toiletries. "They slashed one tire of the victim's car with a sharp object", Iikuyu explained. While the culprits were still on scene members of the satellite police station serving the Langstrand and Eco Village area caught the culprits red-handed. All stolen items were recovered. "The taxi was impounded," Iikuyu continued. The suspects were charged with theft out of a motor vehicle. "I am warning taxi drivers and those committing crimes, especially against tourists between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay as well as at Dune 7, to refrain from doing so or face arrest. The whole area is under police surveillance," he said. Iikuyu called on members of the public travelling between the two towns to report any suspicious activities in the area.

Grown humpback whale beached at Solitude A grown humpback whale was stranded on some rocks at Solitude south of Henties Bay between Sunday evening and Monday morning. The cause of death of this marine mammal has not yet been determined. Members of Namibia Dolphin Project were called to the scene yesterday where they examined the carcass. Whale strandings reported along the Namibian coastline have increased significantly over the past few months and have become a cause for concern for environmentalists. Photo contributed

He was crying and was initially afraid of the police. "He was severely traumatized," a source on scene revealed. According to the source the man was savagely beaten and sustained possible internal bleeding, broken ribs, and bruises all over his body. He was suspected to have been lying in the desert for hours as he was suffering from severe hypothermia – a severely low body temperature. The incident is suspected to have happened sometime between Sunday evening and early Monday morning. The police found various broken bottles and a pipe lying in the vicinity suggesting these were

some of the weapons used during the assault. "We could also see tyre marks around the person suggesting the people were spinning around the victim," a source revealed. Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, was not yet aware of the incident when contacted by namib times. So far nobody knows exactly what happened. The source revealed that it looked like the person was "left to die." There were no documentation, a cellphone or similar found on the victim to identify him.

Dog savagely beaten on head to be killed and slaughtered Erwin Leucshner

A DRC resident is devastated after one of her dogs was recently stolen by an unknown perpetrator which savagely tried to kill the animal to eat it. The dog, known to its owner as Teddybear, was beaten with a pipe on the head numerous times – the culprit was caught red-handed but ran away. "There is no law in Namibia prohibiting people from eating a dog or a cat," explains the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Swakopmund. Charges can only be laid when a person witnesses an animal being abused. The case is then reported to the police. The police will in turn investigate a case of animal cruelty. "We suggest that people immediately report such cases at the nearest police station," stated the SPCA. The incident occurred on Friday, 1 September. The owner was at work when Teddybear was "stolen" out of her yard. The culprit turned out to be a family member which the dog knows and therefore followed. "He sold the dog to a person for N$600 who wanted to kill it for meat," said the distraught owner. She wishes to remain anonymous as she fears the culprits might return. The dog was taken to a house in DRC where

Möller murder gang in court again Piquet Jacobs

The five men accused of killing well-known coastal businessman, Hans Jörg Möller, during an armed robbery in June 2016 made a next appearance in the Walvis Bay magistrates court on Thursday. The case has been under review and could be transferred to the Erongo regional court. It was however, again postponed on Thursday pending this decision. Gotlieb Panduleni (30), David Tashiya (29), David Shekundja (35), Elly Ndapuka Hinavali (29) and Malakia Shiweda (28) remain in custody and will make a next court appearance on 24 October. Möller, his spouse and their two young children were attacked by a gang of men in their home in Walvis Bay's Paul Vincent Street on 17 June 2016. In the attack Mrs. Möller was severely assaulted and Mr. Möller was shot as he tried to defend his family. He died of the gunshot wound a day later on 18 June. Gotlieb Panduleni is accused of having pulled the trigger.

Accident on B2

A white sedan was extensively damaged in an accident on the B2 road between Swakopmund and Arandis on Friday night. The driver who was the only occupant of the vehicle sustained no injuries. The driver reportedly tried to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle and veered off the road.

The Walvis Bay Environmental Fund donated a combined total of N$60 900 on Wednesday to four local environmental projects aimed at improving aspects of the coastal environment and ensuring that our environmental activities remain in check.

NamWater buys more land for new reservoir Erwin Leuschner

The Swakopmund Town Council has decided to sell four erven measuring more than 200 000 square meters to NamWater. The water corporation wanted the land donated, but will now have to fork out N$2,74 million. NamWater needs the land to expand and upgrade its water supply capacity. After obtaining valuations for the land and based on averages determined the land value at N$13,40 per square meter. The blocks are located next to the current NamWater reservoir on the eastern outskirts of the coastal town. The portion of land known as portion 22 is leased by NamWater from Council. With its intention to buy these three additional blocks, NamWater now also wants to purchase the land it currently leases. Although the sale of the blocks was approved by council in August 2016 already, no purchase price has been determined. The blocks form part of Council's town planning for possible future expansion of NamWater's operations. As is customary in such transactions, council acquired various valuations for the blocks. Portion 22 (the current lease area) measures 49 764 m². The three additional blocks applied for measure 49 773 m²; 30 157 m² and 74 812 m² respectively. Based on the average of valuations received, an average purchase price of N$13.40 per square meter was determined. NamWater initially applied that Council donate the land. In this regard, it states in the agenda of the last ordinary monthly council meeting that this is "not advisable" as "Council is not a shareholder of Namibia Water Corporation (NamWater)". While the purchase price was approved at the recent Council meeting (once the Minister has given its approval) various terms and conditions were set out. One being NamWater may not establish a township on these portions of land.

The Mayor of Walvis Bay, Alderman Immanuel Wilfried, did the official handover of cheques to the beneficiaries at the municipality on Tuesday. "The fund further aims to provide financial support through grants to environmental management activities in the form of projects identified by the community, our municipal staff and stakeholders, institutions and the general public. I want to congratulate all our recipients while urging our community members to submit entries for the next round of projects," said Wilfried.The Glass Bottles Recycling Project was launched in March 2016, the project is set on collecting glass and bottles for recycling. The project, which is located in Kuisebmond, collects over 6000 kg of glass, bottles and card boxes every month. This project was awarded N$18 400 for recycling equipment. The BIG 5 project was awarded N$11 500 to acquire equipment

for oil collection and storage, as well as personal safety gear. This project collects and recycles oil. The third beneficiary, Shell – It, make use of natural sea shells to decorate products and other home decoration accessories. They were awarded N$26 000 for the purchase of plant pots, plants, gardening stones and potting soil; glue sticks; vanish; storage boxes; candles and holders; and wood work. The community outreach and educational programme, Namibia Dolphin Project, will be printing educational leaflets and materials with the N$5 000 received from the Fund. The Environmental Fund was established in 2003 to finance activities and initiatives that facilitate the proper management of the environment and natural resources within the territorial jurisdiction of the Municipality of Walvis Bay.

Career exhibition draws hundreds of learners

In his speech [delivered on his behalf by Special Advisor to the Governor, Mrs Adelheid Kandjala, the Governor of Erongo Clr Cleophas Mutjavikua called for an integrated approach grooming the talent of the future. "We cannot work alone in grooming the talents for the future of Namibia. All stakeholders, especially the businesses and enter-prises, have an indispensable role to play by providing training and internship opportunities for our youth. Also for people to supplement their studies and have first-hand experience of various professions". During the official opening of the career fair, a career booklet by the Namibia Uranium Institute was launched. The booklet contains information on careers in the mining industry, which can assist learners in making their big choice and choosing the best career path. The exhibition spanned over two days on 12 and 13 September.

The Erongo Regional Directorate of Education, Arts and Culture hosted its annual Career Exhibition for schools in the Erongo region last week, at the Multi-purpose Centre in Mondesa, Swakopmund. The aim of the Career Fair is to introduce and promote different career options to learners and the different job- and training opportunities available in such career fields. Following a partnership arrangement this year, the career exhibition was supported by the Namibian Uranium Association (NUA), the Swakopmund Municipality and the Swakopmund branch of the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI). This year's theme was: "Fostering Awareness". The exhibition attracted between seven hundred and a thousand learners from various secondary schools. Businesses and training institutions use the exhibition for instance to introduce the youth, as the employee or business owner of tomorrow, to opportunities. A total of 30 exhibitors participated. In her opening speech, the Mayor of Swakopmund Paulina Nashilundo said the career fair is an academic initiative which aims at creating awareness among youth on alternative career opportunities through exhibition and presentation of various career options, choices as well as study opportunities. Nashilundo continued: "In my view, this career fair initiative by the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture is relevant to our stakeholders, mainly our youth who are the majority in our society. Furthermore, this bold initiative is significant as it has the potential to curb the prevailing

Swakopmund's well-known dealer in camera equipment and photo -printing, Photo Studio Behrens, has closed down at the end of August. The owner, Harold Kaitjirokere, will continue the business on a smaller scale from home. "It is with a sore heart that we have taken the decision", said Harold Kaitjirokere to namib times. Kaitjirokere will continue to offer canvass- and large format printing, but not from a formal shop premises any more. He will also continue taking photos at functions, but: "We will not do over-the-counter sales anymore," he explained Photo Studio Behrens is one of Swakopmund's oldest and most famous businesses. Gert Behrens opened the shop in 1976. Back then it was located in what is today known as Hendrik Witbooi Street. In 1987 the business moved into the old building located next to Otto GĂźnther in town. Here the shop remained for 30 years until its recent closure. Shortly after moving to the new location, Henning Schreiber, took over the shop from Behrens. In 1996, Kaitjirokere started working at Photo Studio Behrens. On 1 August this year, the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources implemented a more than N$10 000 % increase in the levy for angling permits. Where permits were charged N$14 per month or N$168 per annum, a single levy of N$1500 per permit per month came into effect. After heavy public resistance, this was revoked less than two weeks later, prompting the Ministry also to consult the public over possible increases of the levy of angling permits. On Wednesday, the first of several public consultation meetings took place. The venue was Henties Bay and fisheries minister Bernhardt Esau addressed the public. He explained policing the coast to ensure anglers stay within the confines of the law costs the Ministry around N$450 000 per month. The more than 10 000 % increases were to cover this cost, but even the Ministry realised within days it was a failed formula. Cancer walk rounds up over N$32 000 Piquet Jacobs

The National Cancer Walk 2017 powered by Radio Wave managed to raise N$32 625 for the Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN) with this year’s event under the theme "Let's go for a walk".

Crowds of individuals and teams showed their support for the event, with 435 ticket sales. The annual walk was hosted simultaneously in Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Tsumeb, Otjiwarongo, Windhoek, Rehoboth and Mariental on Saturday. This year’s walk was dedicated in support of children fighting cancer in Namibia and the funds raised will go to ensure the CHICA Interim Home remain operational and enable the CHICA Fund to continue supporting childhood cancer patients, as well as assisting with the renovation of the Ward 8 West, Paediatric Oncology Ward, at Windhoek Central Hospital.

Money biggest challenge The age-grade rugby tournament took place from 29 August to 10 September in Uruguay. As in previous years, teams were divided into two pools of four teams; Pool A featured Japan, Namibia, Canada and Chile whilst Pool B was made up of Fiji, Portugal, hosts Uruguay and Hong Kong. The top teams from each pool faced one another on the last day of the tournament to determine the winner. The Namibian U/20 Rugby team finished fourth at this World Rugby U20 Trophy 2017. They lost 12-34 in the third-place play-off against host Uruguay. The Namibian team started the tournament on a high note, as they first beat Canada 31-16 and Chile 33-19. They unfortunately lost the last group match against Japan 16-33. With this lost the boys ended second on the log in their group, and thus it ended the chances for Namibia to qualify for the U/20 World Cup. Namibian sports commissioner Monica Shapwa says the U/20 rugby team would have done better if it had enough funds to prepare. Ms. Shapwa accompanied the team to Uruguay. She said the biggest challenge facing sports in the country is the lack of money. "I am confident that if there was enough money, the team could have prepared better. But we all know that money is hampering our potential

future stars in our country. We have to compromise so much when it comes to preparing our athletes," she added. She further said the competition was tough and that the boys did well in spite of the unbearable weather conditions. Shapwa thanked the parents of all the players as well as the technical staff and the Namibia Rugby Union for their contributions to make this tour possible. The general believes is all Namibian sportsmen and sportswomen can go far, but a lack of funds constantly hinders sports at all levels. Be that at commission level, sports federation level or at club level. No doubt! Namibia has a lot of talented sportsmen and sportswomen, but sport needs financial assistance from all corners - from Government to private sector. Access to funds will make things turn for Namibian sport.

Namib Diesel Social Doubles Squash League th

Last week Wednesday 13 saw the start of the Namib Diesel Social Doubles Squash League. With a total of 27 teams that entered the league has been divided into four sections i.e. the Men's A and B and the Mixed A & B, so you can bet that over the next 5 weeks the courts will be bustling with some good entertaining and competitive squash. The results for the opening week are as follows: Men's A Section: Erongo Auto Electric: Michael Stauder & Trevor Heath beat Synapse: Leslie Bosman and Brandon Grane 3-0. The opening game was a killer. Michi and Trev played kept their charge and played their game, which put paid to Les and Brandon's game plan. Namib Diesel: Angelo Titus and Ze-Elias de Jongh beat Supatronix: Ze de Britto& Sergio Figueiredo 3-2. Wow! What a match, which was full of everything from competitiveness, tension and players chirping. It lasted just under 2 hours and was awesome to watch, a pity there had to be a winner. Well played guys. Imanuel Amorongo and Stefan van Tonder beat Jewellery Boutique: Wynand Breytenbach and Jacques Steenkamp 3-0. Imanuel and Stefan must have been thankful for the practice game a few days earlier with Michi and Trev, which put them on the right track to crack a couple of rough diamonds. Men's B Section: Jon & Luke Allen beat Itchy & Scratchy: Jakkie Nel & Ricardo von Stein 3-1. Jon and Luke pulled it off and left Jakkie and Ricardo scratching their heads. Gladiators out of Cosafa as Juniors lose 5-0 to SA Submitted by NFA Media Officer The Brave Gladiators hopes of making into the last four of the 2017 COSAFA Women's Championship dissipated with a 2-1 defeat to Lesotho in the final Group C game while the Baby Gladiators lost 5-0 at South Africa in their 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers on Sunday afternoon. The Senior National Women Team, the Brave Gladiators had to win on Sunday against Lesotho to stand at least a chance of making it through as the best runner-up into the semi-finals but after taking the lead against Lesotho through Anna Shikusho, the Basotho ladies rallied back to take the tie through two goals by Boitumelo Rabele. South Africa were minutes from defeat against Botswana, but were rescued by an equaliser from Chantelle Esau after Refilwe Tholakele had given the Lady Zebras the lead. South Africa has made it to the semi-finals to face Zambia, Group A winners, while Botswana finished second in Group C on four points, one ahead of Namibia and Lesotho. Zambia finished top of Group A with a comprehensive 7-1 victory over Madagascar and Zambia and South Africa will now meet in Thursday's first semifinal, but the identity of the other two sides in the Last Four will only be revealed after Monday's final pool matches. Host Zimbabwe had to settle for second place in the Group A pool after a lastminute goal from Tabitha Chawinga earned a 3-3 draw for Malawi. Zimbabwe has five points from their three matches and must now wait to see what happens in the Group B clash between Kenya and Swaziland on Monday. If Swaziland wins it will take them and the Kenyans through to the semi-finals, but a draw or a Kenyan win and Zimbabwe will advance as the best-placed runnerup from the pool stages. 27 Young Coastal criketers Played at APS and Momentum Cricket Tournaments The August school holiday was for 27 Young Coastal cricketers a holyday on the cricket fields in Windhoek at the APS U/15 Day/Night tournament and the U/19 Momentum cricket week. The 9 x U/15 cricketers with coach, Justus Hangula went to Windhoek to participate in the APS U/15 Day/Night tournament that consisted of APS Cheetahs, APS Lions, APS Rhinos and APS Wolves. Forty eight U/15 cricketers from all over the country were in Windhoek for the APS U/15 Day/Night tournament. The cricketers were randomly divided into 4 teams and a coach was allocated to each of the team. Coaches Justus Hangula and Lauritz Haccou from the coast were in charges of the APS Lions and APS Cheetahs respectively. The results of the APS U/15 Day/Night tournament were as follows: APS Lions (1st Place) (Coached by Justus Hangula from the coast) APS Cheetahs (2nd Place) (Coached by Lauritz Haccou from the coast) APS Wolves (3rd Place) APS Rhinos (4th Place) The U/19 Momentum tournament saw 18 U/15 and U/17 cricketers from the coast participated.

Twelve were in the U/19 Welwitchia 11 team cricket and the other six were part of the U/19 Namibian Invitational team that is made up of various players from all the teams taking part in the tournament. Most of the coastal cricketers were less fortunate and development players through both age groups, making us a fairly young team. Unfortunately the U/19 Welwitchia 11 team cricket ended in 4th place. Junior Cricket Academy

Learners beat the Master in Coastal T20 Cricket League Junior Cricket Academy (JCCA) ended third in the 2016/2017 T20 league and the young cricketers start the 2017/2018 league on a good note as they not only took honours in their first game on Saturday against the second team of Sparta Cricket Club (Sparta 2) when they beat them with 14 runs on their home ground and on Sunday they won their second game against the first team of Blue Water Cricket Club (BWCC 1). The results of Sunday's game between the host BWCC and JCCA was a surprise to the more senior and experienced men of BWCC 1 as well as for the coach of the Academy, Justus Hangula, as JCCA beat BWCC 1 with 24 runs in an excellent display of good cricket. Regardless of the young Dian Neethling being bowled out with the first ball of the game, JCCA stayed cool and scored a massive 125 runs after 20 over's. Gerhard Lottering did the best in the game as he scored 64 runs from just 47 balls. Dian Neethling came from rags to riches and caught four wickets in the game. The captain of JCCA, Laurits Haccau, said that he is very proud of all the boys as BWCC 1 is a very tough team and that is was also tough to beat them but nothing is impossible. He further mentioned that it is good to win their first two games and that they will work very hard to win all their games and thus win the league. The first game of BWCC 1 played on Saturday against Swakop 1 was a big one for BWCC 1 as they beat the team from Swakopmund with 166 runs. Sparta 2 on Sunday won the toss and sent the first team in to bowl. The first team were all out for just 72 runs after 18.3 over's. Sparta 2 needed only 73 runs to win the game and they did so in simply 11 over's as Sparta 2 beat Sparta 1 with 9 wickets after losing the first game to JCCA. BWCC 2 went to Swakopmund to play their first game against the second team of Swakop Cricket Club (Swakop 2). BWCC 2 could only manage to get 105 runs in their 20 overs. Swakop 2 needed only 14.1 over's to reach the target of 106 runs. Swakop 2 won the game with 7 wickets. The next games will be played on 24 September as Sparta 1 will host BWCC 1, JCCA will host Swakop 2 at the Walvis Bay Cricket Oval and Swakop 2 will host BWCC 2. All games will start at 10:00.
