Chinese take majority stake in Rössing Mine

Sharlien Tjambari Rössing Uranium Limited (RUL) is officially Chinese-owned. International mining company Rio Tinto concluded the sale earlier this week of RUL to China National Uranium Corporation Limited (CNUC) at an initial cash payment of nearly N$1 billion and a further N$14 billion in a contingent payments spread over the next seven years and dependant on factors such as the uranium world market spot price. Rio Tinto fully owned RUL which in turn owns 68,62 % of the Rössing Uranium Mine. News of the sale fetched news

Thieves strip Swakopmund bridge Among proud Namibians are “sick” of its metal rails elements called thieves and vandals Floris Steenkamp Thieves continue their “sick” grip on the coastal communities. The latest trend now is the systematic illegal removal of the metal bridge rails of the Swakopmund bridge at the entrance of the holiday town on the B2 coastal road. In a very short time not only the rails disappeared but also the metal uprights which keep the rails in place. Metal thieves are also busy in all the coastal towns at night, especially Walvis Bay, stealing taps, metal pipes and even water meters. The result is not only confined to the owner or resident of the property suffering the physical loss of these items, but also water losses. “Among us proud Namibians are sick elements. These sick elements we call thieves and vandals”, remarked a resident yesterday who alerted the newspaper of the bridge-incident.

N-BIG is a non-profit industry association for the biomass sector in Namibia. According to N-BIG the demonstration of the machinery and products would focus on harvesting, chipping, milling, pelleting, carbonising, surveying, mixing, mulching, burning, smoking and others. The Expo will be worth the stay all day, assures NBIG in its statement. “A wide range of food vendors, drinks and treats will be available and a supervised kid's play area for the little ones. The Expo opens at 08:00 to 17:00. The Expo will also be used as a platform to raise drought relief funds. Note: Otjiwa Safari Lodge is situated 40km south of Otjiwarongo.

Seals hunt penguins and other marine birds at Halifax island Eileen van der Schyff The already endangered African Penguins now face not only competing with the local fishing industry for fish or being hit with influenza or decimated by oil spills. A social media report by Lüderitz Marine Research (LMR) reports several individual Cape fur seals got into the habit of hunting these penguins at Halifax Island at Lüderitz. Railways celebrate 120th anniversary Floris Steenkamp Namibia's railways are approximately 120 years old next month, on 23 August. The first railway locomotive was landed here by ship on 22 August 1899. This very first locomotive, named “Hope”, can be seen plinthed on display in a showcase in front of the Walvis Bay railway station (See pictur “A”). Today, just like then, “Hope” is the emblem of hope for Namibia to grow and improve its rail network as a foundation for economic growth and socio-economic upliftment. A well developed cargo railway network is essential if Namibia wants to stay in the race as import and export hub between the world and Southern Africa and a well developed rail service will take trucks and vehicles off the national roads and in doing so lessen the burden on national road maintenance. Not to mention the positive difference it would make in the country's horrifying annual death toll and injury rate on our national roads. On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the railways in South West Africa (Namibia), Namib Times reported as follows in its edition 23 August 1974: “A variety of tractive power has been used in South West Africa since the first railway was started 75 years ago. The first locomotive to be landed in the territory was the small tank engine HOPE at Walvis Bay which had been built at Stoke-on-Trent. The German Government on their Staatsbahn (State Railway) used the back-to-back locomotives (on that can be seen mounted outside the Windhoek railway station). These little locomotives were used up to Windhoek and took three days to complete the journey. The Omeg line from Swakopmund to Tsumeb employed a much larger and more powerful locomotive (the Omeg No. 9). An Omeg No. 9 is on display outside the Tsumeb railway station (”B”). This engine was built in Germany in 1904 and was replaced in 1912 by the NG-5 Class (NG-5's can be seen on display at the Otjiwarongo and Usakos) stations. (”C”) When the South African Railways took over in

1922 most of the German rolling stock were found out-dated and replaced. The Class 7 locomotive was sent from the Union of South Africa to South West Africa to replace the German railways (that was seven years since the end of German colonial rule over South West Africa). The Class 7 was in use in South West Africa until 1948 when it was replaced by the Class 24, a much more power engine. There was a brief period in 1934 when a Class 20 was introduced on the S.W.A. railway but it was short lived and returned to the Union. Fifty-five of the Class 7 served S.W.A. after 1948 but had to bow the knee when the entire system was converted to diesel locomotives in 1961/2. The diesel locomotive was important for the country as water (for steam locomotives) was scarce and the source of coal to power the steam locomotives situated in the far-off then Transvaal. The converting to diesel locomotives coincided with the broadening of the narrow-gauge line (Omeg line) to Northern Namibia. The first diesel locomotives to serve South West Africa was the Class 32 (”D”). Diesel-traction had its obvious benefits for the country's national railway service, but there were also drawbacks. In the early 1960's the steam train works at Usakos (”E) closed down and the town almost instantly lost its importance in the country's railways. Diesel workshops were opened in Windhoek and other towns”. Note: the OMEG-line between Swakopmund and Tsumeb was completed on 24 August 1906. The Herero Rebellion resulted in huge delays in construction among others. The line's construction reached Usakos on 18 May 1905 and in August of the same year Omaruru. Despite many setbacks the line was completed before the end of 1906, the original construction deadline.

Namport Social Investment Fund donates science kits to Flamingo Secondary School The Flamingo Secondary School in Walvis Bay recently received a donation of science kits valued at N$34 000, courtesy of the Namport Social Investment Fund (NSIF). Receiving the donation, Mrs Tessa Goagoses, principal of the school said that upon joining the school last year, she realized the need for science kits for the Grade 10 Physical Science learners during their practical examinations and that the lack of these essential tools were a stumbling block to the progress of the learners. It was after this that she approached NSIF requesting for assistance in procuring the science kits. “And they not only responded positively, but they have surpassed our expectations”. She further thanked Namport for the blessing and urged the entity as well as other companies to continue supporting education in Namibia. Speaking at the handover, NSIF Trustee Member and Executive Commercial Mr Immanuel !Hanabeb highlighted that such donations are not only an

addition to the school but it is a direct investment in the Namibian child who will be practically exposed to these types of apparatuses, “when your science teachers are demonstrating, you will now be able to see what chemical reaction form when they add a bit of potassium nitrate to a bit of hydrogen or calcium”. Mr !Hanabeb further encouraged the learners present to look after the kits so that others can make use of them as well. “At Namport we believe that Education is the greatest enabler, education helps us and equalizes the community”, Mr !Hanabeb deliberated. In addition, Namport, through NSIF, will purchase chemicals for the science kits valued at N$5 000 next year when the current stock is finished. The Namport Social Investment Fund focuses on four pillars of entrepreneurship, environment, health and education.

Eine gute alte Tradition fortsetzen

Die Arbeitsgemeinschaft der deutschen Schulvereine hat in den vielen Jahren ihres Bestehens Traditionen geschaffen, die im Unterrichtsalltag unserer namibischen Schulen einen festen Platz gefunden haben, die seitdem den Unterricht prägen und damit das Ziel verfolgen, die deutsche Sprache in Namibia zu erhalten und zu fördern. Dazu gehören der Horst-KreftVorlesewettbewerb der Primarstufen und der Kurt-Böhme-Rednerwettbewerb in der Oberstufe, die unter der Schirmherrschaft der AGDS ausgetragen werden. In diesem Jahr war die Privatschule Swakopmund für die Organisation und Durchführung des Kurt-Böhme-Rednerwettbewerbs zuständig, da die teilnehmenden Schulen immer abwechselnd für den Wettbewerb verantwortlich sind. Leider konnten in diesem Jahr nicht alle

Nach vorausgegangenen Workshops, Gottesdiensten und Konzerten in dem Partnerkirchenkreis Otjiwarongo werden sie am 21.Juli 2019 in der Evangelischen Kirche in Swakopmund zu Gast sein. Die Mitglieder des Ensembles spielen im Kirchenkreis in Tecklenburg in verschiedenen Posaunenchören. Durch Mitwirkung bei Rundfunkgottesdiensten, Auftritten bei Veranstaltungen

Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN) requests manpower Eileen van der Schyff

The Cancer Association of Namibia expressed the difficulty of running a nation cancer registry solely through NGOfundraising. CAN calls upon government entities for financial support and manpower which is the case in most countries. Roelf Hansen, serving voluntarily as director of the association said: “It is a difficult situation to run a nation cancer registry through NGO-fundraising without a cent of support from government entities. Hansen

believes government entities are supposed to support registries like these. Hansen said that through the voluntary dedication of Dr Anel Zietsman and the colleagues at AB May Cancer Care Centre, Namibia

Oncology Centre, NIP and Pathcare as well as other private stakeholders, and through the financial support of Namibians, since the end of last year, CAN is now one of the top cancer registries in Africa. In conclusion Rolf thanked

Namibia for their continued support and hopes to make his country proud in the next publication that will be communicated to the African Cancer Registries Networks Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and WHO/IARC this year November. In a recent press release the Cancer Association of Namibia said that CAN requests cancer patients to connect with CAN regarding National Cancer Incidence Report

as they want to trace any possible cases that they might have missed. The Association per annum records plus minus 3700 cancer cases per international standard. Quality data allows for CAN to push harder for legislation and national guidelines, so that Namibians have better access to cancer care in Namibia. The press release further read: “The Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN) is in the process of completing the 2015 2017 data pertaining to cancer cases in Namibia. We thank every citizen who has communicated the diagnosis, recurrences and/or passing of loved ones due to cancer during 2015, 2016 and 2017. The Namibian National Cancer Registry, managed by CAN, kindly request all Namibian patients who has been diagnosed with cancer during the 20152017 period, and who is uncertain that their case may not be properly recorded, to urgently make contact with Mrs Lizelle van Schalkwyk at canreg@can.org.na or by telephone at 061 237740 or by fax at 061 237741. Heated battle at Social League Congratulations to Club members, Danie Greeff and Brandon Grane who will be part of the team representing Namibia at the Growthpoint Inter Provincial Tournament in Durban from 7-13 July. Socials wise the drop in temperature did nothing to dampen the competitiveness on the courts. Heated battles were forgotten after play and it seems reptilian antics are now a part of the club. What a turnaround, from super-hot on the courts Wednesday to icy cold now. How many people from elsewhere would actually believe us if we told them we hitting maximum summer temperatures in the middle of winter? Not many. That heat was doubled as the players played their hearts out and battled it out on the courts, trying to score as much points as possible for their relevant teams. Liquid refreshment was direly needed after play, so much so that reptilian behavior was displayed by a few. Heh! McGuigan in harbour town

Byron McGuigan in action at WBPHS The Namibian-born rugby player Byron McGuigan who practices his sport trade in Scotland is on a two-weeks holiday at Walvis Bay. Upon return he will be joining the Scottish National team for the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan. McGuigan's enjoys his visit with family and friends. He also paid a courtesy call to his alma mater, Walvis Bay Private High School. He used the opportunity to share a few skills and tactics with the school's rugby players. McGuigan: “It is so good to be back in Namibia after such a long time. I am a proud to be both a Namibian and a Scott. It is wonderful to see the family again and to be here among my community members. These boys have

so much talent. Some are talented enough for a rugby career”. McGuigan was born on 20 August 1989 in Walvis Bay. He grew up in Cape Town where he was slated by the Western Province Academy before his first taste of first class rugby with the Border Bulldogs in 2010 and 2011. That was in the Vodacom Cup. After a short spell with the Scotland Sevens team, he returned to fifteens rugby, playing for Glasgow Warriors, Bay of Plenty, Exeter Chiefs and Sale Sharks,

culminating in a call-up to Scotland in 2017. He is a rugby union outside senter or wing for Scotland in international rugby and for Sale Sharks in the English Premiership. He played for Glasgow Warriors in the Pro12 competition. In April 2014 he left Glasgow Wa r r i o r s a f t e r 2 0 appearances and four tries over two seasons. On 2 November 2014, he joined Aviva Premiership side Exeter Chiefs for the 2014–15 season on a one-year deal where he played with Namibian star and also a former Walvis

Bay’ite, Chrysander Botha. In July 2016, McGuigan signed a two-year deal with Premiership rivals Sale Sharks, where he plays currently. McGuigan received his first call up to the senior Scotland squad by coach

Annual Sanlam Cancer Golf Day It was the Annual Sanlam Cancer Golf Day on Saturday 6 July at Rossmund. Due to restraints there will be no final this year, but that did not put a damper on the day as a fair field of golfers turned out in support of this initiative in aid of the fight against cancer. Marco Swartz was in good form at the prize-giving and managed to fine players for lots of things and that brought in welcome funds in addition to the auction. Thank you to Danie Byleveld and his team from Sanlam for all the days arrangements. Results: "A" Division: 1st Helmut Ndjendja 34 points, 2nd Mario Polster 29 points, 3rd Hans Naobeb 27 points. Kudus got their anticipated win over the Western Suburbs from Windhoek. They beat Suburbs 28-25 in this NRU Premier League clash. The clash took place at Kudu Park in Narraville. The first half saw Kudus fly-half Aurelio Plato and Justin Nel from Suburbs successful with two penalty kicks each. When flank Richard

Mupewa scored a try again Nel added 2 points. The halftime score was 13-6, in favour of Suburbs. However, in the second half Kudus used its

opportunities better. Flank Virgill Bampton scored a try and Kudus fly-half Aurelio Plato was again successful with the conversion. The score was now even.

The victory saw Pro-Ed moving to six place on the log with 38 points. Thanks to bonus points the Walvis Bay boys moved to fifth place on the log with 41 points. (Although the teams scored the same amount of tries, bonus points can ensure the losing team still progressing on the log and even stay ahead on the log). Both teams will play their last league games tomorrow (Saturday). Pro-Ed will be traveling to Windhoek for a clash with third on the log KMC/JCC Windhoek Afrikaanse Privaatskool. A win for Pro-Ed might ensure them a place in the quarter finals. WBPHS hosts Pupkewitz Haval Elnatan which is eighth on the log. A win for WBPHS will see them through to the quarter finals. WBPHS coach Juanne-Louis Grobler explained his team made too many handling errors. It cost them games. Pro-Ed coach Wikus Grobler felt his players deserved the win, as they worked very hard. They will also be working hard for tomorrow's Aurelio Plato scored a try and added two more points on the board with an own-coversion. Kudus was no in the lead and momentum was building. Justin Nel scored for the visitors, but unlike his counterpart Plato was unsuccessful in the conver-ion. Suburbs winger Ricardo Swartz scored the next try and Suburbs was now in the lead again. With matters now in the balance, Kudus’ Lloyd Jacobs was over the score line and the match was even once more 25-25. When Plato failed this time to convert the try, the game started to balance on a nervewrecking edge. In the last minute of the game, Plato was

successful with a penalty kick and the scoreboard was at 2825. Kudus coach Romeo Rieth explained this was a long awaited win and it came with sheer hard work. With three games still left to play in the League there is still a possibility of booking a place in the semifinals. Rieth is satisfied his team’s mindset is right for the next three games. Kudus are still up against Rehoboth on 20 July, Trustco United on 3 August and Reho Falcon on a date yet to be determined by the NRU. All the game is away in Windhoek and Rehoboth.
