South African injured in accident in the dunes Local traffic authority warns holiday makers against off road driving by inexperienced drivers Erwin Leuschner A tourist from South Africa escaped with minor injuries after he was involved in an accident in the dunes in the vicinity of Langstrand on Saturday afternoon. The 28-yearold was discharged from hospital the day after the incident. Although everyone is relieved that the tourist only came off with light injuries, a serious warning was extended by the local traffic authority over the weekend for people to take care when driving off road especially in the dunes

Drunk driver’s licence revoked for one year Floris Steenkamp A man's driving licence was revoked for a period of one year, following his conviction last week in the Walvis Bay magistrates court on a charge of drunken driving. He was also slapped with a N$8000 fine, alternatively a period of one year imprisonment. Johannes Shitaleni, the man referred to above is one of 24 drunken drivers arrested during law enforcement operations on 8 to 10 December. "It is simply incomprehensible that people still think it is safe and responsible to get behind a vehicle's steering wheel whilst under the influence of alcohol. Not only does this person risk his own safety but also the safety and lives of other road users", said a senior law enforcer over the weekend. Adding, many of the drunken drivers tested high levels of blood alcohol which means this was not a matter of having one too many before hitting the road. "The high alcohol levels detected in some drivers are evident of people knowingly consuming large quantities of alcohol and still deeming it fit to get behind the wheel". A warning was issued that law enforcement operations will continue in Walvis Bay against drunk drivers. The municipal traffic department, Nampol Traffic, the Namibian Police, police reservists and neighbourhood watch formations are working together on these operations. Other drivers who made court appearances after their arrests over the weekend of 8 to 10 December are; ·Christiaan Bredenhann – found guilty. Fined N$8000. Bredenhann who doesn't have a driving licence is also now prevented to apply for a learner driving license for a period of six months. ·Luandro Christiaan - found guilty. Fined N$9000 or 24 months imprisonment. His licence was suspended for six months. ·Pala Zyambo – found guilty. Fined N$8000 or 24 months imprisonment. Driving licence suspended for three months. ·Morné Job – found guilty. Fined N$8000 or 24 months imprisonment. Driving licence suspended for three months. ·Clinton Bampton - found guilty. They are: Manay Jorgensen; Devan Junius; Johan Geyser; Claude Damens; Alfeus Nghipondoka; Rikus Botha; Peter Shivute; Sydney Beukes and Nicolas Coetzee. The twenty drivers arrested over the weekend of 15,16 and 17 December made first court appearances yesterday. Some pleaded guilty and were sentenced whilst others saw their cases postponed to dates in early 2018. Their names will be released by the Walvis Bay magistrates court this week for publication in this coming Friday's edition of namib times.
South African injured in accident in the dunes Continued from Page 1 motorbike while riding in the dunes. The motorbike fell on him. The victim was with three friends when the accident occurred. The victim initially complained of severe neck pain prompting a decision to dispatch medical rescue services to the scene. The victim was admitted in the Welwitschia Private Hospital in Walvis Bay. It was determined the injury was a muscle-related injury to the neck and after observation the person was discharged. He was released the day after the incident. This is the first off road incident this holiday season. Injuries and even fatalities in the dunes between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay have become commonplace in the central coastal region in recent years. In most cases victims had the accidents as a result of inexperience or taking unnecessary risks.
Dear Swakopmund Resident, The Police Public Relations Committee was established in August 2016 and consists of members of the business community, municipality, social works, teachers, prisons as well as the police from both the Swakopmund and Mondesa station. It is important to take crime seriously in this day and age. One of the first considerations discussed was the need for cameras in our town. Some of the public requested for a City Police and we started looking into this. The City Police in Windhoek is a burden to the Municipality of Windhoek and it was our aim to not have this happen to Swakopmund. PPRC put heads together as a community and looked at the following: Project funding – We thought the only way funding this initiative would be through monthly adding N$10.00 onto rate payers accounts. With this the community has also into and ownership in this. A Safety and security line will be added on the municipal account. The Municipality would be the custodian of the funds and pay out invoices as submitted by the PPRC. Every quarter the financials will be published so the community can see what is being done with the funds. With Crime Prevention Officers we looked at criminal hotspots and 55 sites were identified as Phase 1. PPRC then did a test run of cameras for the month of December by installing cameras at Pick & Pay – during this time no incidents were reported as well as the street kids had abandoned this area. This showed the PPRC that this is a must. Phase 1: 55 Dome cameras and 8 will be installed in current hotspots identified as: CBD Swakopmund, Kramersdorf, Vineta, Oceanview and Mile 4 – currently only hotspots – Residential areas will be blocked out and only street view will show. Town entrances are also an important area to cover. In recent times incidents have happened and no footage is available to assist the police. It was also identified that areas in DRC, Mondesa and Tamariskia have open areas which cause stress. A lot of our employees are surprised in these areas with cell phones stolen etc. PPRC then also thought is good to have some open areas covered to safeguard against this. A control room needs to be established for the 24/7 monitoring of the cameras and call outs made to the relevant authorities. A control room can be established at the Swakopmund Fire station with one number for emergencies. 6 staff will initially be employed to do the monitoring. Close working relationships will be sought between Neighbourhood Watch, Security companies and the Police Force to make this work and all to know. Once approval has been granted a Code of Conduct as well as Operational Procedures will be available advising on guidelines and how privacy is protected. Phase 2: Additional cameras as identified can be installed to eventually cover our neighbourhoods. Additional members for the control room might be needed with additional equipment A Courage Fund, anonymous tip off fund, may be established encouraging the public to report crimes and upon verification a bonus is paid out. Maybe vehicles need to be purchased to assist the police or with call outs. We request the public to support our project to have a safe and secure Swakopmund for all. PPRC AIM: 1. Assist with Crime prevention - Cameras can be a deterrent to thieve 2. Useful piece of evidence – when a crime was committed and a person caught on camera, extra evidence can be submitted in court 3. Help law enforcement solve crime – footage can be released soonest to apprehend the perpetrator 4. High risk areas can be monitored to free police to concentrate on other areas 5. Working relationship – law enforcement and private securities can respond to an emergency when alerted and have information about what to look for when they arrive. We see this project as a community project and therefore request the community to support this with the payment of N$10.00 monthly on their municipal account. We all need to stand together to have a safe community.

The widespread aerial search for a missing Senegalese tourist, who is suspected to have climbed the Brandberg mountain alone, did not yield any results so far. At the time of going to print yesterday, there was no trace of 37-year old Mark Mokosho who is now missing for more than three days.
According to Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police regional crime investigation coordinator for Erongo, Mokosho was first reported missing on Friday evening (15 December). According to Iikuyu, the Senegalese national resides in the United States of America and is currently on holiday in Namibia. “On Friday morning he drove alone from Swakopmund to Brandberg for camping. The vehicle he used is a white Ford Ranger, owned by Namibia Car Rentals”, Iikuyu explained. Mokosho was spotted by people in the area on Friday during the day, as he had parked the car next to the “D2342” gravel road. The gravel road leads from the C35 to the abandoned Brandberg West tin mine. That same evening, the
car was found next to the D2342 road located about ten kilometers from the Brandberg mountain close to a small out-crop. He never returned to his vehicle and it was already late in the evening, said Iikuyu. The people in the area notified the Uis Police at around 23:00 on Friday evening. Police officers went out to the scene, but they could not find the missing tourist. The search was resumed on Saturday morning, but without any success. The rental company was in the meantime informed and retrieved the vehicle. By Saturday afternoon the police conducted an aerial search by helicopter. Similarly, the non-profit organization Intelligence Support Against Poaching (ISAP) joined the aerial search for the missing tourist with their Super Cub nicknamed “The
Protector” (picture above). It is suspected that the 37year old left his vehicle behind and walked to the Brandberg mountain. He then climbed the mountain through the Gâseb gorge. He did not take out a permit nor did he take an experienced guide along. The aerial search for Mokosho continued yest e r d a y. Tw o p o l i c e helicopters were in operation in the area. “No trace of the missing”, confirmed a source close to the search operation minutes before namib times went to print. There is currently very little water available on the mountain. The past weekend also brought scorching temperatures to the area. Due to the extreme heat, ascending the mountain usually is only possible in winter months. Climbing the Brandberg mountain without a guide is
injury it is impossible to get help if there is not someone with you who could go and obtain
assistance. The police have in the meantime called on people in the area to assist
in the search and report any suspicious observations to the nearest police station.

MS Nautica second passenger ship for the summer
The passenger ship MS Nautica was the second cruise ship to call at Walvis Bay for this summer. The vessel arrived on Sunday and departed yesterday. Hundreds of passengers disembarked to explore Walvis Bay and surroundings and others went to Swakopmund to visit places of interest. Local stall vendors of African curio set up at the port's South gate to sell ware to the passengers as they left the port area. The next cruise liner, Crystal Symphony, is scheduled to call on 3 January 2018.

Billboard at Dolphin Beach police station spreads the message against corruption Sharlien Tjambari
The Anti-Corruption Commission of Namibia, Swakopmund branch, launched and unveiled a billboard with the title "Let's root corruption out of Namibia" at the Dolphin Beach police station on Friday. The billboard is erected at the police station spreading the message to motorists traveling the B2 coastal road. The creation of the billboard was a joint effort by the ACC office in Swakopmund and the Afrodite Beach Development. During the launch of the Billboard, ACC's Acting Director General Erna Van der Merwe said: "our young people have an important role to play in fighting corruption. What we are witnessing today, is a culmination of efforts in 2015. The ACC office invited the Ministry of Education in Erongo to partner in organising a poster competition for secondary schools and learners were requested to showcase their artistic skills by drawing society's attention to corruption and its detrimental effects". According to van der Merwe the event was a clear indication that young people can be involved in the fight against corruption. "Learning to fight corruption at an early age means that we are growing future workers and leaders who will have the sense of right and wrong when it comes to corruption". Van Der Merwe explained. Adding the use of a billboard in raising awareness against corruption is a clever idea, as it offers opportunity to transmit a message to a large audience, in this case the higher number of commuters that travel the B2 coastal road daily. "The impact of the message is increased when it is seen repeatedly by these passing motorists. With the holiday season now in full swing, the message can reach Namibians living elsewhere in the country and also the many foreigners visiting our country. In short: the billboard stands out with its high reach and frequency", said van der Merwe. Van der Merwe calls upon every person in Erongo and within the borders of Namibia to show a zero tolerance for corruption. She also urged businesspeople to be pro-active in taking measures against corruption. "Through your cooperation you can guarantee that the Erongo region and Namibia in general become a corrupt and crime free zone", Van der Merwe added. Note: The Dolphin Beach police station is a satellite police station serving residents of Langstrand, Dolphin Park, Namib Eco Village and Afrodite Beach. The police station is also home to a road block which is manned on a permanent basis during peak holiday seasons throughout a year.

Officials representing Governments from across the African continent gathered in Swakopmund recently to reconfirm these Governments' commitment to the Program for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA). The initial idea for PIDA was formulated five years ago, and acts as a blueprint for infrastructure transformation on the continent for the period 2012-2040. This week the officials came together to embark on new efforts, brainstorm on infrastructure projects and bring these ideas closer together for development goals on the continent. The event was hosted at the Dome Conference Centre and skills transfers, job creation and training were identified as the key challenges for Africa to meet its infrastructural development agenda. Officials attending the event included members of the African Union Commission, African Development Bank, Government of Namibia, Southern African Development Community, European Union, Development Bank of Southern Africa and more.

Pioneer of Walvis Bay’s ship chandling industry Maria Engelbrecht dies The death of Mrs Maria Engelbrecht at the age of 80 occurred in Walvis Bay on Wednesday. Engelbrecht was seen as the founder of Walvis Bay's ship chandling industry. Engelbrecht arrived in Walvis Bay's as a young girl of 18 in 1955. She was the founder of the first ship chandlers and also Portuguese market garden and Portuguese liquor wholesalers. A well-known person in the business and sport section. Also a very important member not only of the Portuguese community, but also of the whole of Walvis Bay community. She was a very charitable person, she would help wherever it was needed and she was a devoted Catholic and dedicated member of the Stella Maris Parish. She was very involved in the good works of the church and the community of Walvi Bay, Kuisebmond and Narraville. Her presence will surely be missed among all who knew her and those whose lives she touched. Swakopmund wants to be asbestos-free The Swakopmund Town Council has taken the decision to remove all asbestos from buildings and structures. Council intends to make N$250 000 available for the 2018/19 operational budget for the sole purpose of identifying asbestos "hot spots" in the holiday town and the removal thereof.The decision to make Swakopmund asbestos-free was taken at the last council meeting for 2017 held at the end of November. In the minutes it states although many products manufactured nowadays do not contain asbestos, it is still likely to find asbestos containing materials in older building structures. Asbestos has been classified as a cancer- and lung disease producing agent. It was a popular insulator and has been used for construction purposes, especially as a roofing material. Improper handling, removal or renovations of structures containing asbestos may give rise to the release of very fine fibers which can remain airborne for a lengthy period.Once these fibers are inhaled they can remain in the body for many years, increasing the risk of developing cancers: cancer of the lung tissue and mesothelioma, a cancer of the thin membrane that surrounds the lung and other internal organs. An alleged drug dealer, who was arrested in July in Swakopmund after he was allegedly found to be in possession of 15.3-kilogram cannabis, was granted bail to the tune of N$15 000. The state opposed bail when the bail matter was heard in the Swakopmund magistrates court.Joseph Hoa-Khaob (37) was arrested on 7 July at his home in Swakopmund. The police carried out an extensive antidrug operation during that time and arrested him for being in possession of 72 parcels of cannabis, valued at N$153 300. After spending more than three months in custody, the suspect brought a formal bail application – and succeeded. During the bail application state prosecutor Dalon Quickfall opposed bail on two grounds: he argued it would not be in the best interest of the public as the offense is serious and that the state has a strong case against the accused. Traffic chief explains the presence of his vehicle on parking lot for disabled Swakopmund's municipal traffic chief Mr Melvyn Cloete explained this week the reason why he had to park his vehicle on a parking bay designated for disabled drivers. This follows after a member of the public took a picture of him parking there and taking exception to it, as any other motorist could face a fine of N$1 000 for using parking bays that are not open to the general public. Cloete explained on the day he was called out to a spot in the central business district where a problem arose with a car guard. He responded in his own vehicle and could not find a parking spot and was left no other option than to use this specific parking bay. He had to first observe what the car guard was doing and in order to conceal his presence he entered Pick 'n Pay from where he could first see the car guard and when he established the car guard was not acting within his duties, confronted him and sorted out the problem. Swakopmund Spar FEI World Jumping Challenge Over 100 competitors from all corners of Namibia gathered at Riverside Equestrian Centre last weekend for the "Swakopmund Spar Third Leg" of the 2017 FEI World Jumping Challenge and Youth Olympic Qualifier. Nadine Flemming and Seeis Shelton managed to clear all but one hurdle to get Namibia's show jumpers within reach of a ticket to the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in 2018 under the watchful eye of FEI judge Sandra Cox. With only two African country's results for the Qualifier not yet in, Flemming has an excellent chance of fulfilling the dream the Namibian Equestrian Federation has been nurturing t h r o u g h i t s Yo u t h Olympic Programme. Secretary General of the Namibian Equestrian Federation Gigi Mathias, said that the event was extremely good and that he is satisfied. Flemming and Seeis Shelton also won the Namibian

The 2017 Nedbank Desert Dash delivered The 13th annual Nedbank Desert Dash delivered as promised, an exciting cycling marathon through the Namib Desert that started at the Grove Mall in Windhoek and ended at Tiger Reef in Swakopmund. A total of 900 hardcore cyclists took on 369 kilometres of gravel road in what is the most intense mountain-biking event in Namibia. The 2017 Nedbank Desert Dash has grown with more than double the participants as in recent years. Konny Looser scooped the ultimate prize for the 3rd time in a row in the men's solo category and walked off with N$34 000 for completing the gruelling race. He also managed to set a new record, completing the 369-kilometre stretch in 13 hours and 55 minutes. Following on Looser's heels was Max Knox who made off with N$19 000 for his solo effort, while Thinus Redelinghuys received N$12 000 for coming in third in the men's solo category. In the women's solo division, Rebecca Robisch had an incredible race coming first, with a time of 16 hours and 9 minutes while Wilmien Chamberlaine and Anri Parker came second and third respectively. Robisch received N$34 000, while Chamberlaine made off with N$19 000 and Parker received N$12 000. In the two men's division, Team Kia Elite's Cobus Smit and Drikus Coetzee made it to the checkpoint first while Michelle Vorster and Carmen Buchacher, riding for the Janine and Suzelle Davin Sport Trust were first in the two women’s category with each team walking away with N$20 000. This year's race also offered a mixed gender team and 4 Person teams, all vying for a stake of the N$370 000 total prize money distributed to the best performers. Team MBM came up top in the 4 man category, Team Kia- UCT taking second place and the Gondwana Dust Devils finishing in third place.
One of the highlights of this year's Desert Dash was when farm worker, Johannes Uheka, who competed with a borrowed bicycle, walked away with a brand new Toyota Aygo worth N$170 000 sponsored by Indongo Toyota. During the recent official launch of the Desert Dash race, Nedbank Managing Director Lionel Matthews noted that it takes a brave soul to take on the might of the world's oldest desert – at night, especially. Speaking at the official prize giving, Eddie Turner, Executive for Nedbank Corporate & Executive Banking stated, "I would like to applaud each and every one of the cyclists who participated in the 2017 Nedbank Desert Dash. You can all be proud of the fact that you have overcome the peril that is the desert and have shown to us today who you really are. It really is amazing the amount of effort you put in to make this race possible. Thank you for this tremendous commitment, which lies at the core of making the Nedbank Desert Dash possible." While the Desert Dash race offered a magnificent cycling experience it equally unlocked endless business opportunities for local businesses. According to Thusnelda Araes, who deals with the reservations at Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre, not a single room was free at this popular refuge between 9 and 15 December this year. The same went for Clarice Theys who until recently ran a bed and breakfast at the coastal town.
Narraville Youth Soccer The Narraville Youth Soccer Academy recently hosted a successful friendly soccer tournament at the Narraville soccer field. The tournament was for the youth of Walvis Bay in the age groups under 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17.
