Tunacor Group celebrated a triple achievement on Friday. The launch of its Seafresh squid processing plant (see report elsewhere in today's edition); the inauguration of its new jetty and reaching the mark where it officially employs more than 2 000 people. Fisheries Minister Bernhard Esau officiated at the celebrations of these milestones on Friday where he said the new jetty will ease fishing operations for Tunacor in that loading and offloading of vessels will be faster and thereby shorter turn-around times for vessels to return to the fishing grounds. The 70 meters long and 16 meters wide jetty was constructed at a cost of N$35 million and has ice- and fuel supply pipes integrated in the jetty's structure. The development of the jetty raises Tunacor Group's profile to stay among the top Namibian fish processors. With regard to the 2 000 employees mark, the Minister congratulated Tunacor Group for
this achievement and said that is in line with his mission as fisheries minister to ensure the highest number of employment opportunities created for every ton of fish caught, landed, processed and distributed. “Maximisation of jobs is not a loss-making venture as some critics argue. We must be smart and invest in value addition so that, as we employ more people to add value, we are also fetching higher prices for our final products. This is a win-win scenario which Government is determined to promote”, said Esau in his keynote address. The Minister, in applauding Tunacor and Continueson page 2

A German couple was attacked during botched robbery on the C14 leading to Sossusvlei on Sunday afternoon, making it the fourth attack on tourists in the coastal region in so many weeks. All signs are there that armed robbers are now targeting vehicles, especially tourist vehicles, on remote roads and could seriously harm Namibia's reputation as a safe haven for tourists. Mr Evetus Maximilan Meyer was traveling with his wife from Walvis Bay to Sossusvlei/Sesriem in a rented Toyota Hilux, when a black sedan overtook them and forced them to stop. One of the men had an empty 5l container, which gave the couple the impression they were in need of petrol. Then, two other men jumped out of the black sedan, one armed with an axe and the other with what resembled a baseball bat. Continues on page 2

A thirty-year-old man from Walvis Bay succumbed to his injuries in the Cottage Private Hospital in Swakopmund, after a motorcycle accident on Sunday morning on the C28 near the B2 turnoff. It is alleged that Mr Christian Barend Stephanus Harmse (30), lost control of his green Kawazaki, about 1 km from Swakopmund, as he was traveling towards Walvis Bay on the C28. The bike left the road and Harmse lost control of it and fell. He was injured and died at hospital. In another fatal accident, a cyclist was hit when the driver of a white Toyota Hilux, Abed Hermanus Bekker (51), slammed on his brakes in an attempt to avoid hitting the cyclist, when the cyclist suddenly made a left turn, right in front of the oncoming Hilux on Friday on the corner of Hidipo Hamutenya Drive and Green Valley Street in Walvis Bay. The cyclist, identified as Moses Nghipande Paulus (61), later succumbed to his injuries in the Walvis Bay state hospital. An investigation continues and criminal charges against Bekker is not ruled out.
Senior citizens overpowered Sharlien Tjambari in their home An elderly couple was overpowered in their home in Swakopmund’s Kramersdorf on Saturday, at around 01:15. Thugs broke into the houe of Mr Timm Wagner (79) and his wife (68). It's alleged that the Wagner couple was woken up by two unknown men wearing balaclavas that night. The two men allegedly grabbed Mr. Wagner and his wife, pushed them into a bedroom and demanded money and fire-arms. Wagner handed over N$500 and the suspects removed an additional N$800 from his trouser pocket. The suspects then ransacked the entire house and took 2 Samsung Galaxy cell phones, 2 gold watches and 2 necklaces. According to Detective Inspector Daniel Gurirab of Nampol, the suspects tied the victim's hands with shoe laces before they fled the scene. Mr Wagner managed to untie himself and then his wife and then reported the incident to the police. We are relieved that no harm was caused to the victims�, said Gurirab. The Police investigations in this incident continue.

Cancer association raises awareness The Cancer Association of Namibia held a national cancer walk Saturday to raise awareness and funds. This was the third fundraiser for children fighting cancer in Namibia for this year. September is Children's Awareness Month. The walk which began at Super Spar Swakopmund saw many new participants, including many young individuals walk past the Strand Hotel through to the Tug restaurant, with the finish line at the National Marine Aquarium. The event organiser Celeste De Klerk said: “we were lucky to have two sponsors this time around”. The Tug restaurant and Strand Hotel sponsored the walk and provided water points along the way. “We are very grateful to them”, reiterated De Klerk, who also mentioned that this year's event brought together new faces and first-time participants. A total of N$10900 was raised at the event and will be used to support the association's interim homes that look after cancer patients.

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allan’s super yacht, Octopus, returns to Walvis Bay on 27 September. Allan was ranked as recently as last month the world’s 46th richest person and apart from Octopus also owns several other super yachts. Allan is said to have a deep affection for Africa’s wildlife and nature and every year spends time at destinations across Southern Africa. Octopus recently arrived in Cape Town where Allan is believed would be staying on his yacht prior to his departure on safari and at Walvis Bay upon his return from safari. ·Allan co-founded Microsoft along with Bill Gates.

Kaspersky Lab boosts cyber security awareness across Namibian schools Windhoek, 17 September: Kaspersky Lab, a global cyber security company, in partnership with Active Education, is bringing cyber security education in Namibian schools through a series of interactive activations.
Aimed at driving top of mind awareness around online safety, the Safe Kids Roadshow1, starting on 10 September in Windhoek, will move through Walvis Bay and conclude on 21 September in Swakopmund - covering 20 schools and a total of over 13 700 children and parents. Among the main threats to be addressed are cyber bullying, inordinate disclosure of personal information and general rules of online behaviour. 1 The Safe Kids Roadshow is an educational initiative done by Kaspersky Lab together with a third party education provider. During the project, Kaspersky Lab educated about 16,000 kids across the META region in South Africa, UAE and Bahrain. 2 Kaspersky Lab and B2B International Security Risks Survey 2017 While the internet provides many benefits to children, it can also be a dangerous place for them and as such, it is essential that children are educated about online security and parents know and understand their children's online activities in order to protect them. Alarming 32% of parents, surveyed globally, admitted that they do not have any control of what their children see or do online, and about 25% do not take any measures to protect their children from online threats2. “Protecting children is something that Kaspersky Lab takes very seriously on a global scale, which is why we recommend using not only the usage parental control products, but also having a trusting relationship with your child. No matter what kids are doing online, it is important for parents not to leave their children's digital activities unattended and to educate them about online security. The more information you have as a parent, the more you are able to protect them,” adds Riaan Badenhorst, General Manager for Kaspersky Lab Africa. Kaspersky Lab's latest report, based on statistics from the company's Parental Control modules, has revealed that children in Namibia are more likely to watch video content and listen to music, then spend time on social media. Audio and video content accounted for 50% of all online activities of Namibian children, with YouTube and DVDVideoSoft being popular among the younger generation, while younger kids prefer Nickelodeon Africa. This was followed by 31% interested in Internet communication media – in the majority of cases, this is referred to as social media/ networks – with popular ones being Facebook, Google Hangouts, Skype and WhatsApp. Children in Namibia also visited news sites more frequently, including the BBC and the Daily Mail – accounting for 8% of activities. Electronic commerce is among the top categories as well: 5% of children showed their interest in exploring Amazon for clothes and mobile devices. At the same time, according to our survey, 12% of respondents globally admitted that their children became addicted to the internet, and the same amount complained that their children saw explicit content online. Malware is another big problem – digital devices can easily be infected while children play or search online - this happened to 10% of the users surveyed. “As a school, we fully support the need to educate and create awareness about online safety, especially as our learners are exposed to more than ever before and while this opens up immense learning opportunities, we need to be cognisant of their safety,” said Kathi Damon, Principal Primary School at the Waldorf School Windhoek. “With this in mind, we fully support the activation that Kaspersky Lab has initiated for our learners and look forward to the positive impact it will have.” Kids in different countries have different interests and online behaviours, but what links them all is their need to be protected online from potentially harmful content. To help children avoid such threats, Kaspersky Lab experts advise parents to talk with their children to educate them about correct behaviour and security on the Internet, to ensure they know not to publish too much personal information that attackers can use, that it is not necessary to join groups with potentially dangerous content or to 'friend' someone they don't personally know or follow links from unknown recipients. The Kaspersky Total Security and Kaspersky Internet Security consumer solutions include a Parental Control module to help adults protect their children against online threats and block sites or apps containing inappropriate content. Foreign tourists fall victim to ambush Namibia seriously risks losing its image and popularity as an international tourist destination. A new trend seems to be sticking out its head, where thugs choose to target tourists in more isolated areas. It is alleged that early on Monday morning, 10 September, a silver sedan with three men overtook and stopped the two Polish women, who were traveling on the gravel road from Uis on their way to Spitzkoppe, via Usakos. Marta Kuckarz (33) and Iga Jakubowska (32) were traveling in a rented vehicle, when they encountered a car who overtook them and stopped right in front of them. This only 60 km out of Uis where they were coming from. The Polish national managed to to divert and she sped off, but the thugs set chase and forced them to stop once again by stopping in front of them. The three men approached the rented vehicle, one armed with a panga. The armed thug started to smash the rented vehicle's windows while the other two took cameras, wallets, backpacks, clothes and N$7 000 cash from the vehicle. The robbers then threatened them and demanded more money and then drove off in the direction of Usakos. The two ladies were too rattled to take the registration number of the robbers car and also could not describe what they looked like. The tourists were left unharmed. Members from Usakos Police Station were dispatched to the road area where the incident took place, but could not find this vehicle. Other Police Stations in the area, (Okombahe and Tubusis) were also notified to be on the lookout for this vehicle.
This incident follows only weeks after two tourists were stabbed in separate robberies in Swakopmund. International Coastal Clean-up Day
On Friday, 14 September, Sunshine Corner Montessori was joined by Swakopmund Montessori Academy and Karin Schulte, for International Coastal Clean-up Day. Children, teachers and parents picked up litter between Platz Am Meer and the circle on Strand Street, filling several bags with plastics, papers and unwanted rubbish and teaching our little ones a valuable lesson in caring for our environment. The Swakopmund Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) Swakopmund Branch held a gala dinner to honor its sponsors for the support they have provided over the years which enable them to once again host the annual SWAITEX 2018, this past Saturday at The Dome in Swakopmund. Now in its sixth year of operations, the Swakopmund International Trade Exposition (SWAITEX) is constantly improving and adding value. This year they have collected over N$750 000 from corporate sponsors including Erongo Red, Standard Bank, First National Bank and Namport. SWAITEX is scheduled to take place from 10-13 October under the theme: “Local Economic Growth through International Trade”. The objectives of the expo is to provide opportunity for business and community stakeholders to display their products and services to the public while at the same time forging networks ad business link-
ages for economic growth. The Mayor of Swakopmund Pauline Nashilundo said: “We have high expectations that as SWAITEX grows it will attract investors and tourists and will be a real catalyst for increased trade and investment, resulting in employment creation in Swakopmund and putting Erongo region into the next gear to accelerate economic growth”. Another successful swim camp was hosted at the Dome in Swakopmund during the recent school holidays. This camp served to evaluate the skillful application of learnings from pervious camps with enhanced focus on technical components that will ensure a competent and highly competitive performance from these swimmers on a national and international level.

National Field Hockey Premier League heats up The second round of Bank Windhoek's National Field Hockey Premier League took place this past weekend in Windhoek. Teams put in their best performances on this eagerly anticipated start to the league. Men's Premier League The Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) team lost 4-0 to a rejuvenated BDO Wanderers. Jan Izak de Villiers scored twice and walked away as the top goal scorer at the end of the match. Saints beat Deutscher Turn und Sportverein (DTS) 1-0 with Wian Schickerling scoring the solitary goal. Saints showed why they were crowned Indoor and Night League champions when they continued their good start to the season with a 6-0 score against NUST. Fagen Hansen scored a brace during the encounter. NUST suffered another defeat against current champions Windhoek Old Boys (WOBSC). The final score was 6-0 in favour of WOBSC. Dylan Finch scored a hat trick. DTS also faced NUST and once again imposed another downfall on the latter. The students gave a good account of themselves but it was not good enough as they eventually went down to a 5-1 loss. Leanard Fick also scored a hat trick against NUST. Women's Premier League BDO Wanderers' Bianca Muller and Michelle le Roux, each scored twice to register a 4-0 win against DTS.
Saints Angels played NUST and showed why they are the current champions with a definitive 12-0 victory. Anya Robberts scored six times to put her name in the hat as top goal scorer of the season. Saints beat WOBSC 3-0 with Kaela Schimming scoring twice. WOBSC got their season on the right track when they beat DTS in a closely contested match. The final score was 1-0. Captain Elzaan Erasmus scored the only goal in the game. BDO Wanderers played top class hockey and won 6-0 against NUST. Bianca Muller scored two goals during the fixture. WOBSC played NUST and secured a 5-0 win. Saints took on BDO Wanderers and won the game 2-0. AzyleePhillander and Joanne van Rooyen scored for Saints. Saints Angels played WOBSC and had to show their resilience and character when they eventually got the goal that led to a 1- 0 victory. The next round of fixtures will take place this coming weekend at the Wanderers and Windhoek High School hockey fields in Windhoek.
