A truck operator says the traffic authorities should warn truck drivers in time that they cannot use the B2 coastal road on account of the holiday season. Many truck drivers are well underway towards Swakopmund from Walvis Bay when they are informed all truck traffic is diverted to the MR44 behind the dunes. In this instance yesterday this truck got stuck with its trailer dangerously across the B2 in attempt to make a U-turn and return to Walvis Bay, as the driver learnt he would not be allowed to proceed once at the road block near the Dolphin Bay police station at Dolphin Park.

First Dome Sport Awards The Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources Bernhard Esau christened Tunacor’s new N$200 million fishing vessel “Oshiveli” in Walvis Bay yesterday. The Minister had the honour just over a year ago to take part in the keel laying ceremony of the vessel at a shipyard in Vigo, Spain. A part of the ceremony included the welding in of a coin into the vessel’s keel. The Minister welded in the coin. Page 16

Erongo Marine Spreads Christmas Cheer Among Elders Erongo Marine Enterprises spread Christmas cheer among close to 600 elders in the Hardap, Otjozundjupa and Kunene regions with food parcels handed out in person by the company's Managing Director, Dr Martha Uumati. In addition, the company donated canned fish to the value of N$100,000 to the offices of the Governors of the Hardap and Otjozundjupa regions. The food hampers contained amongst others canned fish, flour, maize meal, sugar, tea and body lotion. The canned fish donation will be used for various food security projects in the respective regions as deemed appropriate by the Governors. “During this time of the year it is our turn to give back to those less fortunate in our country. Nothing makes me happier to see so many smiles on the faces of our elderly,” Dr Uumati said. She added that it is important not to forget the contribution the elderly have made in paving the way for our personal successes and our country's freedom. “I am privileged to be able to share this day with the elderly, not only to give back, but also to be humbled by our elderly and pay tribute to the road they have paved for us. I believe that to make an elderly person happy is the noblest act a young person can ever do,” Dr Uumati said. Erongo Marine Enterprises is one of the leading horse mackerel fishing companies in Namibia. The donations were made possible through Erongo Marine's corporate social development trust, the Arechanab Community Trust. The events in the Hardap and Otjozundjupa regions were coordinated through Hon Isme Isaacs and Hon Otto Ipinge, governors of the respective regions. In Khorixas the food hamper donations formed part of the Welwitchia Community Festival organised by the Khorixas Town Council and community members.

Thirty-seven Namibia Maritime and Fisheries Institute (NAMFI) students graduated as fisheries inspectors and observers, Class 6 deck officers, navigation officers and marine engineering officers. The Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of NAMFI Ms Connie Pandeni said “Through the years the board and management have been working on strategies to raise funds and as a result, a new business plan has been crafted that spells out the way forward”. Pandeni added that NAMFI's contribution to the country's economy is without a question as the graduates are directly at the means of production for the realization of the government's NDP5 and the Harambe Prosperity Plan and vision 2030. NAMFI Acting Director Tobias Nambala said at the graduating ceremony that they are hard at work to put together a new strategic plan for 2019 to 2025 and that the new strategic plan should survive tough economic conditions and ensure that NAMFI stays relevant and to ensure sustainability and allow the creation of value for their customers and stakeholders. Nambala also mentioned that NAMFI is not spared from the enduring economic uncertainty increases risk and that need to
set and implement a new business plan and that they are busy formulating supporting funding models. The Chief Executive Office of the Fisheries Observers Agency (FOA) Stanley Ndara said “The FOA is indeed a visible symbol of Namibian sovereignty and additional vigilance against threats to the conservation of our marine resources such as Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated fishing (IUU), oil pollution, and other covert activities along our coastline”. “We complement the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources' monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS) programme.” Ndara added. Ndara challenged the graduates to come up with innovative ways to protect the ocean's marine resources and to device innovative ways to carry out surveillance activities over the Namibian Exclusive Economic Zone and to foster closer cooperation and collaboration with the Ministry and law enforcement agencies and apply their knowledge they acquired to the best of their abilities.

A long walk to Epupa A South African couple shares here today the marvellous adventure they had when they walked 3 600 kilometres from Cape Agulhas to Epupa Falls in Northern Namibia. Cape Agulhas is South Africa's southernmost tip and Epupa Falls Namibia's northernmost point. Due to a foot injury Lauren had to endure, the Brown's had to stop their walk for a period of five months. They returned home for Lauren to recover and then proceeded with their long walk to Epupa. The couple walked a total of 157 days to complete the 3 600 distance. Erlo Brown and Lauren Brown, both 30 years old, lives in Hermanus in South Africa is a couple with a passion for life. Erlo is a photographer, filmmaker, teacher and explorer. Lauren holds a BSc in Animal Science but pursues her dream of being an artist and a jeweller. The couple literally walks their life together, and has been on foot through many spots in Africa. Erlo boasts the achievement of having walked the entire South African coastline. Talking of dreams, it was in fact Erlo who had a dream that he and Lauren walks the Namibian coastline and for them to share their journey with others through this landscape, a documentary and a book. “It might sound over simplified, but it was really as simple as that. Once we knew that we wanted to walk we had to start saving. We taught English in South Korea for 2 and years, saving for our walk”, explains the couple in an information piece they shared with Namib Times. Here are more of their journey: “We chose a coastal route because we can use seawater to make drinking water. The coast is also a great place to be for environmental research and see the human impact on our oceans. The coastline also offers a natural line, easy to navigate, and is cooler with a dynamic beauty. We followed the coastline all the way in South Africa. Unfortunately, we were only able to walk along the Namibian coastline from Walvis Bay to the Ugab River. The rest of the way through the Skeleton Coast was off bounds and instead we had to walk inland. We carried all our food, water and supplies with us. While we were in the desert, we pulled a
custom-built cart that carried everything. We used a manual desalination pump to make water from seawater. We slept in our tent each night, making sure we pitch our tent out of sight. We only ate food that need no heat preparation. Biltong, chocolate, cheese, nuts etc. The Namibian landscape is unique, probably one of the most unique in the world. The sheer vastness of it was staggering. We learnt although much of it is desert, it can still rain very hard. We had a few encounters with the desert rain that left us in awe. We met dozens of people along the way. All of them have been intrigued and friendly. From the farmers in the South giving us accommodation and biltong to the Ovahimbas in the North tending their goats. We only had good encounters with the Namibian people”, the Browns explained. There were scary moments too. “Our scariest moments all include wild animals. One evening in Damaraland, we were woken by a Spotted Hyena that was standing just outside our tent calling his buddies to come and see what he had found”. Erlo managed to scare the hyena off. Adding they heard lion and hyena for a good week or more every night. They also encountered elephants along the way, but they were always friendly. Other very unique moments were skinny dipping on a deserted beach, watching sunsets laying in their tent and eating chocolate. There were the magnificent stars to look up to every night and of course looking and listening to the mighty Epupa Falls. Walking such distances requires a good pair of shoes, the couple explains. “We've used so many shoes on past walks, none of those shoes did very well. We now walk with an American sandal that we customised with special soles”. Even for the toughest pair of shoes there is an end. Theses sandals held a full 2 000 kilometres but the sandals gave up near Walvis Bay and from here to Epupa it was “tekkies” and “vellies”.

An inquest has been launched into the death of 42-year-old Oreheni Senneth Boois in Mondesa, Swakopmund. It is alleged that Boois (the deceased) was found hanging on a wire from the roof of his ghetto in the Oletweni location by a coworker. Although there is speculation that Boois was having relationship problems with his girlfriends, these claims are not confirmed. According to Erongo police, no suicide note was found. No foul play is expected.

Seven Seas Explorer to call Two passenger liners scheduled for Christmas Day and Boxing Day The passenger liner Seven Seas Explorer calls at Walvis tomorrow (Wednesday 19 December). The vessel arrives early in the morning and passengers will embark to visit Swakopmund and Walvis Bay and also go on pre-booked day excursions into the Namib desert as well as dolphin cruises. World Class gym now open in Swakopmund Sharlien Tjambari
Swakopmund is home to a brand new state of the art gym, Namib Fitness gym. Located at the Swakopmund Water Cubes the gym offers cardio training, strength training, and squash and there is super circuit training, junior care and swimming as well. According to the Sales and Marketing Manager of Namib Fitness Julius Davids and Founder André Du Preez, revamp on the gym started in March this year. The gym officially opened on 1 December and will offer world class training to its clients. The gym have a total of four qualified trainers who will offer the best services to the Swakopmund community, they all originate from Virgin Active. For safety reasons the gym is fitted with CCTV cameras on every floor and a panic system at every equipment in case something happens and a client need assistance. Du Preez said all the emergency contacts are on speed dial. Signing a membership contract give a client direct access to all available services in the gym as well as access to the Swimming pool at the water cubes. Parents who have children do not need to worry about leaving their children at home or unattended because there is a Junior Care available for all the children. “The person who signs in the child will be the only one responsible for signing the child out, so no one will be allowed to pick up your child on your behalf”, said Davids. The gym open at 05:00-20:00 Monday to Friday. On Saturday they are open from 06:00-18:00 and Sunday is 14:00-18:00.

The tiny human wonder is doing fine and is currently hospitalised at the Lady Pohamba Private Hospital in Windhoek (pictures taken shortly after her birth). Namib Times spoke to the baby's mother, Mrs Ester Vatileni yesterday who said she and her husband Heikki are very proud of their daughter and delighted with the progress she makes. Ek is radeloos met die bestuur van bogenoemde twee besighede wat tydig en on-tydig hul musiek en bemarking of vanuit hul winkels of op die sypaadjie voor die winkels te uitbasuin. Die inwoners is al raadop. Daar is heelwat woonstelle in die omgewing en ek is in die onbenydingswaardige posisie om bokant Furnmart en oorkant Jet Stores te woon. Hulle gee nie om hoe hard hulle die klanktoestelle laat blêr nie en dit help nie om die vensters toe te maak of jou TV se klank harder te maak nie. Die decibels is op die hoogste. Hier woon ou mense, kinders met babas en van die mense werk skofte en van rus is daar nie sprake nie. Dit is oneindig swak maniere en om nie van swak buurmanskap te praat nie. Ek het al die bestuurder van Jet geskakel maar hy steur hom min aan my klagte. Ek het hul hoofkantoor se besonderhede probeer opspoor maar tevergeefs. Na 'n gesukkel met Furnmart se bestuurder het ek Mnr Phillip tromp geskakel ,maar sy antwoord was “daar is wetlik niks wat hulle verhoed om hul musiek te speel nie en buitendien ek moet verstaan dat die ekonomie swak is en hulle alles doen om besigheid te bevorder. Ek het nie geweet harde oorverdowende musiek is 'n bemarkingstrategie nie, behalwe om jou bure vies en onsmaaklik te maak. Buitendien is Mnr Tromp verkeerd, want daar is nog stees “nuisance laws” in plek en dit bly steeds 'n onwetige oortreding. Ek moet darem sê, Furnmart het bietjie afgeskaal na die gesprek, maar aan Jet is geen salf te smeer nie en dit het ontaard in 'n blatante uittarting teenoor die publiek en inwoners. Dit lyk my hoe slegter dit met hul finansies gaan, hoe harder die musiek. Ons kla elke dag in ons mooi land oor siviele ongehoorsaamheid en dat mense die wet oortree en dat misdaad toeneem. Burgelike ongehoorsaamheid begin met klein jakkalsies soos die, waar mense sê ek sal maak soos ek wil en basta met julle ander. Mense soos Mnr Tromp en ander het 'n siviele en sosiale verantwoordelikheid om toe te sien dat hul personeel die gemeenskap waarin hulle besigheid doen te respekteer en dat daar siviele orde is. Laat ons asseblief self besluit watter musiek ons wil luister, hoe hard en in die privaatheid van ons wonings waar ons niemand anders pla nie. Moet asseblief nie u muskiesmaak in ons kele en ore afforseer nie en dit bemarking noem of dat dit jou reg is nie. Ek is seker as ek my klanktoestel voor enige van hierdie menere se huise gaan kom opstel en luide musiek gaan speel gaan hulle beslis die polisie bel. Die plaaslike owerheid kan gerus meer doen om hierdie euwel hok te slaan, maar ek moet byvoeg dat Mnr Cloete van die verkeersafdeling in die verlede baie behulpsaam was en hul van tyd tot tyd kom stilmaak as ons kla, maar dit kom nie tot 'n einde nie en dit hoort nie so in 'n beskaafde gemeenskap nie. Distell Rossmund open Championship Rössmund donates towards Stanley Gawanab causes upset at the 2018 Distell Rossmund Open Championship. Save the Rhino Trust The Rossmund Golf Course played hosts over the having been chosen as the 2018 Namibian Sportsman weekend to the 2018 Distell Rossmund Open Championship weather conditions were almost perfect and the course - especially the greens were in an excellent condition. Unfortunately again this year the tournament only managed to attract a field of 45 players representing clubs such as Windhoek, Omeya, Tsumeb, Gobabis, Henties Bay, Walvis Bay and Rossmund – this was mainly due to our juniors participating in South Africa and the absence of all those golfers who opted during 2017 to become part of the Namibian Pro Tour – numbers are also adversely effected by the current economic climate. The Championship is an official event on the NAGU Calendar with Merit points on offer to those vying for a place in the Namibian Team. Play commenced at 7.30 am on Saturday morning – weather was a bit windy and on the cool side but soon brightened up. Stanley carded a par round for his first 18 holes whilst Defending Champion Likius Nande came in with a one over par 73 together with Anton Bonifatius. Round 2 brought Gabriel Shikodi into the mix with a 73 gross; Stanley carding a 77 gross and Likius a disappointing 83 gross - giving Gabriel a one shot lead going into Round 3. Willie van Zyl and Mario Polster were standing firm after day one in the “B” Division ending the day with a one shot difference. Achmet Abrahams was stamping his authority in the “C” Division carding an 84 gross – 9 shots ahead of his nearest rivals Steven Johns and Tienie van Rensburg. Sunday morning early it was down to business in similar conditions overcast and windy – despite a fight back from Likius shooting a par round for the day - Stanley managed to steal the title by one shot. President of NAGU Marco Swarts thanked Distell for their continuous support of Golf throughout Namibia especially during the current economic climate; he thanked Rossmund Golf Course for the use of the course and also the staff for all their hard work and effort that went into preparing it for the tournament. He had a special word of thanks for the RGC Committee for ensuring that the tournament ran smoothly. Sponsors representative Carien Siemens said she was delighted to be a part of the tournament and thanked all the players for taking part. She confirmed that Distell were committed to supporting golf throughout Namibia and looks forward to the 2019 season. NAGU used the occasion to congratulate Likius on

The fundraising events for Save the Rhino Trust comprised of two events of which the first was a, Executive Breakfast for Business Women held on Thursday, 15 November and a 26 Golf Teams battled it out on the golf course on Friday, 16 November. The Breakfast was a huge success as Dr Jeff Muntifering the Scientific Advisor from Save the Rhino Trust, delivered a presentation on Rhino Conservation in Namibia and their successes. Mrs. South Africa, Nicole Capper delivered a motivational speech and said with the allegory of the Rhino as the basis for her inspiration “Difficult, and sometimes seemingly impossible challenges that women or mothers are confronted with in life, are only there to make them stronger”. During the Executive Breakfast, a silent auction was organized to add to the funds raised. Special gratitude was expressed to the Artists who made their art pieces available for the auction (Karin de Kock, Margo Bassingthwaighte, Glenda Gerhardt, June Owen-Smith, Louise von Wielligh, Heidi Louw, Yvonne Edwards, Coral van der Plas, Margaret Courtney-Clarke, Rosa Smit, Rellyn Detlof-Wismer, Carola Lorke, Sharon Flewellyn, Helga Engling, Mariette Haslek, Betsie van Rensburg, Irene Strydom and Stella Hoon). The second event, the ever so popular golf competition, only attracted 26 teams this year (instead of the ideally 36 teams). It was a “shotgun start” at 10h00 and the teams completed their 18 holes around 16h00. With the new course rating system and handicap calculations that came in operation on 1 November this year, only moderate scores were carded this year. Fortunately, all teams won a prize. Adding to the festive vibes of the day, Johan Kok made a HOLE IN ONE on the 12th hole and obviously had to “ring the bell”, much to the delight of the other 77 players, who cheerfully enjoyed the bar round. The prizes for the golf competition were sponsored byNamibia Breweries, Hotel Plaza, Swakopmund Service Station (ENGEN), Rössmund Golf Course, Stainless Engineering, Puma Chemicals, GerritViviers, Absolute Perfect Water, Lynne van der Walt, Coastal Office National and Corporate Guarantee. Commenting on the donation, Hannelie Turner, Public Relations & Fundraising Manager of the Save the Rhino Trust of Namibia said: “It is absolutely amazing, often all our donations come from overseas partners and companies and in the end Rhino poaching is a Namibian problem so we are very touched especially when it is tough times that Namibian organizations are willing to support our work because it is our heritage and it is a local heritage as well, so because of that it is just amasing”. Turner further said that Rössmund Golf club is the biggest supporter locally, in Swakopmund. According to her, the Trust's biggest expenses go towards the men in the field. The Trust has Rhino rangers that physically patrol the North West area of Namibia and that have been their success. “These rangers go out and they are physically on foot for 21 days at a time and then they are back home for seven days, then they start all over, so we need to have money for uniforms, we need to take water and food to them, that is our biggest expense and that is what we will use these funds for” she added. Turner also said the major challenge they face is patrolling in communal area where there are no fences and it is complete open areas so there is no control of who comes in and out. “It is a harsh environment to work in”.

The Dome Swakopmund hosted its first ever Dome Sports Awards in an effort to acknowledge all athletes and officials who participate in active sports code in Namibia's biggest and most modern sporting facility. 2018 saw some great achievements accomplished by Dome athletes and officials. Africa Champions, Zone6-Winners, COSSASA top achievers and tons of national titles were shared among the group of talented and special sports people that call The Dome their home. The Dome Swakopmund felt that these achievements needed to be rewarded and recognized, irrespective of other awards they might have received before on different platforms. Criteria were drawn up, nominees requested by the individual sports codes and the painstaking process working through the lists went underway. The judge's panel, headed by Buttons Heyns with the assistance of Dave Hammond and Arne Putensen, took up work and started comparing the finalists with great attention to detail. After a couple of heated exchanges between the trio, the winners were determined, and the respective certificates printed. The show was on and thanks to the sponsors Bon Hotel Swakopmund, The Dome Serenity Spa, Pure Bliss Hair Salon and Nautilus Studios, The Dome was able to hand out some great prizes. The evening exceeded expectation as more than 80 people flocked to The Locker Room Sports Bar and Lounge at The Dome to witness this milestone. Much of the spotlight of the night was on Emile Pitt. The poster boy of the Swakopmund Gymnastics Club broke onto the stage in style this year. After winning a gold medal on the vault during the Africa Championships in front of his home crowd at The Dome, Pitt went on to win another gold medal for vault at the Youth Africa Games in Algeria as well as claiming a second place on floor at the same competition. At the same time, he dominated the Namibian national scene. His accolades earned him the Sports Person of the Year and the Male Senior Athlete of the Year award on the evening. In the Female Senior Athlete of the Year category, Karateka Mayvonne Swart took top honours after a year to remember. Two times silverware at the UKF Championships in Rwanda, two more at the AUSC Region 5 Games in Botswana as well as one at the Africa Youth Games made her the best candidate on the international stage. Various local accolades added to her almost impeccable year. Competition was fierce among the juniors. The title for
Female Junior Athlete of the Year eventually went to athletics superstar Chrislene Klein-Nienaber. By clinching the first place for high and long jump, as well as 80m hurdles at the COSSASA Games in Botswana, Chrislene also secured the awards for Victrix Ludorum, Best Track Athlete and Best Field Athlete at said event. On a national level, no one could compete with the Swakopmunder in her three top divisions as she cruised from victory to victory. Similar achievements graced the CV of up and coming inline hockey crack Ruben Bacher. His excellent ability allowed the youngster to win three medals at the national championships in three different age categories. He was further selected to represent his country on junior and senior level during the World Skate Inline Championship in Barcelona next year, while also being handed the Most Valuable Player trophy from his home club, the Coastal Pirates this year. Gymnastics added another two prizes to their club when Matt Gabriel was declared winner of the Star of the Year category while Else !Naibas secured the Rising Star of the Year trophy. The Star of the Year award was reserved for those athletes that separate from the rest by dedication and passion for their sport, rather than by medals. Gymnast !Naibas was awarded this prize together with inline hockey ace Arian van der Plas in recognition of their future potential. “This was a category reserved for those athletes that will play a huge role in the future of The Dome Sports Awards. They are the future”, Hammond remarked. Karate scooped up the Coach of the Year through Valdemar Swart. Among his success were 9 medals that his athletes won at the Region 5 Championships in Botswana, the first ever medal for a Namibian Karate ace at the African Youth Games in Algeria as well as leading the first ever Namibian Karateka to the WKF World Championships in Madrid, Spain. Games and competitions are often decided by referees. In acknowledgment of their often-undervalued contributions to their sports, The Dome also handed out an award for the most outstanding umpire of the year, which went to Theresa Swart for karate. With all their 14 teams winning medals during the 2018 season, the Coastal Pirates Inline Hockey Club was voted as Club of the Year, while their U12A team got the top place for Team of the Year.
