Two hake trawlers Hel 153 and Hel 154 sank in the bay off Walvis Bay on Wednesday. The two vessels were tied down together at anchorage. One sprung a leak and sank. It pulled the other vessel down too. The two trawlers are not in use any more and had no one on board. The vessels belong to West Coast Fishing.

New method to load Busted at exam location - 150 learners caught with cell phones bulk salt A new method is now applied in the manner bulk salt is loaded into bulk carrier ships in the port of Walvis Bay. Namport communications manager Tanà Pesat explained in a statement this week a shipment of 25 000 tons of bulk salt was loaded by skip-method at the beginning of August, as opposed to the traditional conveyor-belt system employed for many years already at the bulk terminal. In a statement Pesat said an increase of 100 % in bagged salt handling in the port of Walvis Bay was recorded for the 2016/2017 financial year and bulk salt handling increased by 10 %. The full statement reads: “The Namibian Ports Authority (Namport) handled about 25,000 tonnes of bulk salt destined for the United States of America. The operational method that was used to load the salt into the vessel makes it the first of its kind for the Port of Walvis Bay. Normally, bulk salt is loaded into the vessel's hatch with a conveyer belt. With this shipment, salt was loaded on site into skips and transported by trucks to be discharged into the vessel's hatch. This operation took 3 and half days to load into the bulk carrier “Loveland Island”. The vessel departed on Saturday, 5 August 2017 and the estimated time of arrival within 21 days. Mr Pine Van Wyk, Managing Director of the supplier company Gecko Namibia Pty Ltd, said that the company chose the skip method for loading the salt as it proved to be cost effective. More salt shipments will take place during the year and are destined for various countries such Canada, Brazil, Europe, USA and other African regions. Motoring Inside Sharlien Tjambari NamPol carried out a search operation on Wednesday at the Swakopmund Secondary School, targeting learners who were entering exam locations with their cell phones. A total of more than 150 mobile phones and a laptop were confiscated in the process. According to the principal of Swakopmund Secondary School, Mr. Sinvula Sibanga, NamPol visited him a few weeks back and said they want to carry out such an operation. He agreed without hesitation. Then I noticed the place was surrounded and learners were being searched. They searched every single learner in my school. A total of 150 plus cellular phones were found during the search", explained Sibanga. Sibanga said he was not happy with the find. It is exam time. All the phones were switched on and was active. Some of the phones even contained snapshots of old question papers.� What if any of these children were caught cheating during exams? They would be expelled from school and they would have to repeat that grade. Sibanga said the school has a standard arrangement for confiscated cell phones. A cell phone is only released upon a penalty fee of N$200. "What happens now is proper records are taken of all the cell phones found on the learners. The information is needed to verify ownership and possible stolen phones. The laptop that was confiscated will only be released once proof of ownership is delivered. Parents are advised not to allow their children to take cell phones to school. There is a ministerial policy on cell phones. Cell phones are not allowed in schools for various reasons. Sibanga explained in cases of emergencies learners are allowed to take cell phones to school. But then they are required to leave the phones at the secretary's office and collect it after school. There was a very positive aspect too among the negative. According to Sibanga the police also brought drug sniffer dogs along. He expressed his satisfaction at the fact that no learners were found in possession of drugs or even had traces of any drugs on them which the sniffer dogs would have detected straight away. Chilly temperatures have been the norm at the central coast over the past few weeks. Some mornings were misty with very little visibility Erwin Leuschner The months of July and June ended with temperatures lower than averages of other years. August does not seem to be any warmer. According to Swakopmund amateur meteorologist Klaus Knupp, winds too have been noticeably stronger since the beginning of the year. The winds were near average though for June and July. According to Knupp the number of East Winds recorded have been slightly less this year. Moreover, these winds were noticeably weaker in both June and July, compared to previous years. When he compared the average number of East Wind occurrences over the past 15 years (year on year), 2017 saw less East Wind days in June and July. "What struck me as obvious following up on the day temperature was that Namibia's interior (most of southern Africa, in fact) was consistently warmer than average for the whole of July, whilst at the coast temperatures were closer to the year on year averages. Looking into the foreseeable weather future, he noted some models are predicting a weak la Nina for the summer ahead. This is a similar situation to the past rainy season. Namibia can therefore hope for a rainy season, more or less along the same lines as 2016/2017.

Entrance fee to enter the Jetty is “bogus� Erwin Leuschner

The Swakopmund tourism fraternity has warned swindlers who are demanding an entrance fee from tourists who wish to walk on the Swakopmund Jetty. The call follows an incident on Monday evening when a couple from overseas was stopped at the entrance of the coastal landmark and had to pay N$20 per person to enter the jetty. "The jetty is public space and is free for everybody to visit without any fees," confirmed municipal Public Relations Officer Ailie Gebhardt to namib times. She added that the municipality will send "our law officers to investigate (the matter) and call that person to order." The incident occurred on Monday evening as the young couple wanted to walk to the end of the jetty. As the tourists were about to enter the jetty area, an unidentified man stopped them and demanded the entrance fee. Initially the tourists didn't want to pay, as there is no sign or notice attached to support the man's claim. But the person was adamant and said that the "money is for Council" after which the tourists obliged and paid. On Tuesday, the message regarding the fake entrance fee was spreading on various social media platforms. The message reads: "Please take note and spread the word! There is a person charging N$20 "entrance" to the jetty and claiming it goes the municipality's Save the Jetty Fund". Please inform any of your guests or visitors to Swakop that this is bogus and there is no jetty entrance fee. It is free for all to enjoy!"

Residents team up in silent protest and demand no bail for Strzelecki murderers

Erwin Leuschner Residents of Swakopmund are up in arms about the recent brutal murder of the elderly Strzelecki couple at their home in the suburb of Vineta. They pledged to take part in a silent protest on 26 September, at the Swakopmund magistrate court when the couple's alleged murderers make a next court appearance. They wish to place public emphasis on the rising crime wave in the coastal towns, often costing peoples' lives. The organiser of the initiative "A Peaceful Swakopmund For All" is an initiative by Swakopmund resident Clinton Lang. "I am angry. I am a very upset resident," he said to namib times. With the protest, he wishes to see that the three suspects in the Strzelecki case are denied bail and for the police investigation to secure a conviction of. More importantly though, he wants to see a social reform. "The Strzelecki case is the tip of the iceberg. There have been so many heinous crimes and after the recent brutal murder I thought that we need to stand together and do something as a community," he says. He started the group "A Peaceful Swakopmund For All", calling on residents to join him on 26 September in front of the magistrate court in a silent protest. "We want to show that we are angry about the wave of violent crimes that has hit our town and

our region," he continued. After he made his idea of a silent protest public, more than 80 people confirmed their future attendance at court within the first few hours. Lang chose the above-mentioned date as it marks the second court appearance of the couple's alleged murderers, Daniel Stephanus Nghilifa (26), Jerobeam Simon Shidute (23) and Fabianus Lazarus (24). While Lang hopes the three suspects are not granted bail, he encourages the attendees to stand in silence for all those who have been murdered in our town and region and hope that justice is served, quickly and swiftly. "It's not just about this case. It doesn't matter where these crimes take place. We want to create awareness and I hope to work towards a social reform, to make a change," he said. Adding: "Where are we heading if we do not address these issues?" Lang invites every Swakopmund resident to be part of the protest on 26 September and make their voice heard. The attack on Siegfried Paul Helmuth (82) and his wife Sieglinde Roswitha Strzelecki (79) took place on Wednesday, 2 August between 08:00 and 09:00 in the morning. Two suspects initially entered the house and brutally attacked Roswitha Strzelecki resulting in her death. They then assaulted and threatened her husband with knives and demanded money. They stole a cellphone, sandals and N$1 000 in cash before fleeing the scene. The main suspect Nghilifa was arrested shortly after the incident while he was allegedly trying to flee from town. The police arrested Shidute in the early morning hours the next day. All stolen properties were recovered and serve as evidence in court. Siegfried Strzelecki was hospitalized with his injuries and died days later in a frail care centre, presumably of his injuries. The Strzelecki family is well known at the coast. Only three months before the brutal attack and couple's deaths, on 23 April, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Case against SchneiderWaterberg withdrawn Staff Reporter Former Swakopmund estate agent Emily Schneider-Waterberg is free after charges of malicious damage to property and assault have been withdrawn against her. During a recent court appearance her lawyer, Marinus Scholtz, informed magistrate Nelau Brown a settlement agreement has been reached between Schneider-Waterberg and the complainant. "The parties agree and undertake to withdraw criminal matters and agree not to pursue any criminal domestic matter against each other," Scholtz explained. State prosecutor Paulus Shilongo had no objection and applied the matter be withdrawn against the accused on request of the complainant. The matter was subsequently withdrawn. The case against Schneider-Waterberg has been on the roll for almost three years, after she was initially charged on 10 July 2014. The matter was remanded numerous times until it was set down for plea and trial on 22 June 2016. Schneider-Waterberg was absent on that date, prompting a warrant of arrest to be issued. On 3 February 2017 magistrate Brown cancelled her bail. Schneider-Waterberg spent six nights in custody, before released on bail of N$3000. Since the case has now been withdrawn, the bail money was refunded.

Overturned vehicle at Solitaire Piquet Jacobs Travellers came across this sight of an overturned vehicle on the C14 route, about 35km from Solitaire late Wednesday afternoon. What makes it strange is neither the driver or any passengers were anywhere to be found. Residents at Solitaire confirmed that the accident happened earlier during the day and no one sustained serious injuries. The driver lost control which caused the vehicle to veer off the road and overturn.

Unconscious and bloodied girl found next to B2 On Monday morning between 02:00-03:00 an unconscious 17-year-old girl was found lying only a few metres from the traffic circle near the Martin Luther monument next to the B2. The girl’s clothes were bloodstained. Members of the Namibian Police found the girl. An ambulance arrived and she was taken to Swakopmund State Hospital. She was transferred to a Windhoek medical facility shortly thereafter. The police manage to trace members of her family. Preliminary investigations revealed the victim was with her friend the previous night at Makiti Bar no. 2 in Mondesa. The duo met with a man driving a grey Mazda 3. The man allegedly invited them to Infinity Lounge and thereafter they drove to Engen truck port and service station in Swakopmund. The victim allegedly had an argument with the man. They all got into the Mazda 3 and drove

off. According to the victim's friend the suspect allegedly drove in the direction of Arandis and at the traffic circle he ordered the victim's friend to get out of the vehicle. He then drove off with the victim. The girl was later found unconscious and with bloodstained clothes. It is suspected that the victim sustained head injuries. The Namibian Police in the meantime confirmed they have traced the driver of the Mazda 3 and he has been arrested. He faces charges of kidnapping and attempted murder.

Managing input costs in animal Agronomy farming Farming Profitability is determined by both output and input and the management there-of. Profitability in grain and animal farming is influenced by input cost management and – as with any business - the effective management of input costs can improve the profits yielded. Andre Mouton, Manager of FNB Agri in the North Central region advises on the biggest expenses in animal and grain farming and proposes some cost management measures for farmers in these sectors. Fertiliser accounts for almost 40% of the direct variable costs, followed by fuel at +15%, herbicide and pesticides at +11% and seed at +10%. These of course will differ according to the commodity being produced, expected yield and whether it is in dry or irrigated land. In livestock production, the greatest expenditure is in feed and health costs. In Namibia the livestock sector is mainly an extensive farming operation making feed cost highly correlated with rainfall which is out of the control of the farmer. The farmer can manage this cost by managing the risk of grazing shortages and be proactive with their adjustment of cattle numbers to reflect the available grazing. Your production system should also suit the area where you farm – the more variable the rainfall, the more flexible your farming system should be. "We would like to give some advice as to what farmers can do better to manage the expenditure," says Andre. Grain farmers should adopt a sustainable purchasing strategy for fertiliser and herbicides, together these account for over 30% of production costs. About 80% of fertilizer and some herbicides and pesticides are imported and therefore subject to fluctuations in the rand/ US dollar exchange rate and international prices. If one adds fuel to the mix, which means the farmer has no influence on prices of close to 49% of production inputs. Consider the use of solar power to reduce energy cost as a long term investment. "A prudent application of fertiliser/herbicide/pestic ides is required – application at the right time, in the correct type and quantities. It also means regular soil tests, practising conservation agriculture and adoption of genetically modified (GM) crops that in turn help lower the reliance on p e s t i c i d e s a n d h e rbicides," explains Andre and adds: "Livestock requires an improvement in feed conversion ratios and a smart grain procurement policy which considers the high price volatility." The last few years have been tough and we

experienced some of the worst droughts in parts of our country". Grain prices in neighbouring South Africa from which we import skyrocketed and squeezed

margins in the poultry, pork and feedlot industries. South Africa and Namibia also had an invasion of the Fall Army Worm. All of which put a squeeze on production, sales

and of course profit margins. ”What rule of thumb should be kept guaranteeing that a farming business is sustainable even in tough times? Ensure that a sound business and financial plan is developed, implemented and augmented from time to time to address the immediate and new risks. "Like any business, profitability is in-

creased by also managing spend better. A noble idea would be to sit with a financial planner who can assist with a range of financial products to address individual and business needs. And – as with any business, farmers should also save and invest where they can to have a buffer in tough times," concludes Andre.

Another pensioner commits suicide making it the fourth case for August A 73-year-old Swakopmund resident committed suicide over the weekend, making it the fourth case of suicide in the month of August reported along the central coastal area. According to Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, John Douglas Bassingthwaigthe, killed himself by shooting himself with a pistol in the head.According to Iikuyu the pensioner was seen on Saturday at about 12:30 sitting on one of the wooden poles seperating the OK entertainment beach area in Vineta from the Vineta suburb. A gardener who was busy working at a house opposite heard a gunshot and saw a man lying in the sand. He reported the incident to his employer who called the police and E-Med Paramedics. Bassingthwaigthe was severely injured and taken to the Cottage Hospital where he passed away. "No foul play is suspected and he left no suicide note," Iikuyu explained. This article is nothing more than a sensationalist attempt at writing; an insult to the journalism industry. This article could have been approached from so many different angles that could have carried a news worthy message. You mention it's the 4th case this month; how about writing about the risks of suicide in older men and why (considering the suicides often take place in our local retirement town) or how about providing contact details that people can talk to if they find themselves in such situations. Instead you have provided no useful information to anyone other than totally offending the family and making an already difficult time worse by splashing the facts (what you think it is achieving I have NO idea) all over your paper just to attract dramatic reading. As for the photograph you published in the paper; words cannot describe… The utter disregard and disrespect you have shown not only to the victim but to the family is a clear reflection on your lack of responsibility or

ethics. I don't imagine you caring much for this otherwise you wouldn't have written the article the way you did; but the absolute least you could do is extend an apology to his immediate family and start taking the responsibility of JOURNALISM more seriously. Fish permits back to the old levy Many coastal residents rejoiced and inundated the permit offices at the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources on Friday, after news broke that the price of fishing permits have been reverted to N$14 per month or N$168 per year. Recreational fishing permits were increased drastically in July to N$1500 per month. The increase to N$1500 sparked national and international outrage. Locals said it was unaffordable and foreigners said they would remove Namibia as an angling holiday destination. Even when the Ministry introduced an option of N$50 per day permits, price resistance persisted. The announcement of the return to "normal" fees was made by Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources Bernhard Esau on Friday in Walvis Bay, at the launch of the 6th Namibia National Fish Consumption Promotion Trust Day. Horse mackerel fishery in stormy waters “We had an honest expectation the Minister would reverse the drastically increased quota levies, in the same manner he reversed the decision of the N$1500 per month angling permit”.Stakeholders in the midwater trawl fishing sector admitted this week they were left bitterly disappointed when Fisheries Minister Bernhard Esau did not make any announcement on Friday to reverse his decision on drastic quota levy increases slammed on the sector some weeks ago. Quota levies sky-rocketed between 391 % and 850 %.The midwater trawl sector has been entering troubled financial waters in recent years, after the two biggest operators' share of the annual Total Allowable Catch (TAC) was decreased with more than half to allow newcomer right holders to enter the market. Fish exports and local fish consumption can live in the same space in Namibia, says Fisheries Minister, Bernhard Esau. Namibia harvests 550 000 metric tons of fish annually and 2,3 million Namibians cannot exhaust these volumes by local consumption only. Namibia's national target for domestic fish consumption is 160 000 metric tons per annum, very close to one third of the total annual harvest Minister Esau made this statement in Walvis Bay on Friday at the launch of the Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust's (NFCPT) annual National Fish Consumption Day. This year the National Fish Consumption Day is to take place in the Kavango West Region. I am aware that the objective of providing fish to our citizens may appear to some people to be in conflict with our desire to maximise export values in order to contribute to economic development. We have enough variety and volume of fisheries to achieve both objectives", the minister explained. Hake, monk, crab and lobster are exported to high value markets, but species like horse mackerel and snoek are popular on local- and SADC markets. Namibia's inland waters also harbours some 5000 metric tons of bream and is a major source of food security for thousands of Namibians. On the topic of the NFPT, Minister Esau said during the 2016/17 period the Trust distributed through fish shops only 4% of the 160 000 metric tons earmarked for domestic consumption. CHEC sets an example in occupational health and safety management China Harbour and Engineering in a joint venture with the Namibia Road Contractors Company and Baby Face Civils [CRB JV] at the end of July this year celebrated two million hours worked without any lost time injuries. The joint venture is constructing a national oil storage facility at Walvis Bay and the project is expected to conclude by mid-2018. The joint venture partners held a quayside ceremony on Friday at the project to celebrate this achievement. In a statement issued during the ceremony, the joint venture partners said there are a lot of challenges in safety management.Apart from 800 hundred employees working on-site, the challenge is much more difficult due to language and culture diversity. These include special work vessels, lifting equipment, 3 concrete batching plants and one CMB batching plant, welding machines, earthmoving equipment and others. This project entails dredging works, marine structure works which required the construction of a 1.5 km of temporary steel jetty for access and a work platform. B2 claims high school learner The Namibian nation is shocked and despaired at not only the death of a 18-year-old Eldorado High School learner, Nicole Tsela, but also the details surrounding the incident when the vehicle she was travelling in overturned during what seems to be a drunken jolly ride. The tragic incident took place at around 02:50 on Sunday morning, approximately 20kms outside Swakopmund. The Volkswagon Polo with four occupants, including the driver, veered off the road and overturned numerous times when the driver Jeffrey Swartz (26) allegedly lost control over the vehicle. Tsela was flung from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other occupants; Sheroline Davids (19) and Henrico Swarts (20) were admitted to Swakopmund State Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was placed under arrest and escorted to the hospital under police guard. Swartz was reported to be under the influence of alcohol and has been charged with culpable homicide. Following the incident, it is understood that the group was out on the town in Windhoek on Saturday night, when they decided to travel to Swakopmund causing much confusion as none of them informed anyone of the unplanned trip. Swakopmunder crowned as Miss World Next Top Model in Lebanon Sharlien Tjambari

24-year old Penina Ushini, born and bred in Swakopmund, has been crowned "Miss World Next Top Model Africa" in Lebanon. Ushini, who has always had a passion for modelling, travelled to this Middle Eastern country earlier this month for the competition. Back on home soil, in an interview with namib times she shared her unique experience. For as long as Ushini can remember she has been taking part in beauty pageants and fashion shows. "I always looked up to Naomi Campbell," she says with a smile. "I mean, which young girl did not? She is an icon and a legendary on the run-way." Her inspiration and motivation Ushini also got from local talent like Namibian model Laimi Mondjila. Mondjila has made it to the international platform. "She showed me that your childhood background should not limit you chasing your dreams. Every dream is valid," says Ushini. Her Journey to Miss World Next Top Model 2017: Ushini's journey started in 2016 when she travelled to Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, for the Miss Tourism Universe competition. "(It was) another great and amazing experience. "I also represented Namibia at the Miss District International in Benin. Going for an international pageant is always a great opportunity for any young girl". You rub shoulders with some of the best models and model agents in the world, she explained. This year Ushini was invited by Style Events, the organisers of Miss World Next Top Model, to take part in the Miss World Next Top Model 2017 Pageant. "I was honoured". Once again, an opportunity to represent her country on an international platform. Ushini competed with 50 other beautiful young and talented women from different countries from all parts of the world.

"This time the preparations were much easier. With the assistance of my family, I was able to cover all the expenses. On Arrival in Jounieh, near Beirut work started almost immediately to prepare for the big event. Days were filled with activities. There were events to attend, sponsors visited us, and interviews with local magazines followed". Ushini admits it was 28 days of very hard work to prepare for the final day. "I was a nervous wreck. I had to compete against 14 other beautiful and amazing young women for the African title". Adding: "I managed to scoop up the African title. It was truly one of my proudest moments. I have gained so much from this pageant. Not only did I meet many other models, I

made many new career contacts and gained a lot of personal growth." The way Forward for Miss World Next Top Model Africa: As the reigning Miss World Next Top Model Africa, Ushini has a few projects underway. She plans projects in Swakopmund that would benefit the community. "I will also visit two other African countries for humanitarian work", she explained. The destinations are yet to be confirmed. As a young, local woman, who made a name

for herself on the international stage she shares valuable advice: "I hope to change and inspire young girls to go after their dreams and not always take the easy way out. Educate yourself as a young woman and do what your heart desires. God has made us wonderful and unique. Nothing and no one can change what we believe in." She urges the community to assist young people, especially when they are traveling to represent the country elsewhere in the world. They are putting Namibian on the map.

BrickS for the people Erwin Leuschner In an effort to curb the acute housing shortage, the Swakopmund municipal council, as well as the Governor of the Erongo Region, Clr Cleophas Mutjavikua, officially commissioned a manual brickmaking machine on Tuesday for re s i d e n t s f ro m low-income groups to produce their own bricks and build their own houses. The machine can be rented. “If people build houses themselves, it is one way to elevate poverty,” Clr Mutjavikua explained during the commissioning ceremony. He expressed hope this machine will make a meaningful change. The brickmaking machine was initially donated by the Turkish Agency for Cooperation and Coordination (TIKA) in 2015. During the ceremony Clr Mutjavikua said as Namibia is a democratic entity it took a lot of “consensus” to get all parties on board to determine the way forward for the optimised utilisation of the brickmaking machine. The machine was installed on an open plot behind the Riteway Service Station. Residents can apply at the municipality to rent the machine and manufacture bricks to build their own houses. “The machine can be rented for a term of one to three months. “We have given our citizens the opportunity to build houses. We have to deploy more of these machines,” he declared. Swakopmund Mayor Clr Paulina Nashilundo encouraged residents to make good use of the machine, to produce good quality bricks and construct affordable houses. Houses constructed

with bricks will also reduce the amount of “rampant shack fires” and will ultimately increase the living standard of the ultralow-income group. Nashilundo urged the community to handle the machine with care and look after it. “Acts of vandalism will not be tolerated,” she warned. The income

generated by the rent of the machine will be utilised solely for its upkeep. “In the past, the community looked to government to solve challenges the country faces. However, government cannot solve all problems alone. Initiatives like this are very welcome,” she explained.

Grand dame Julie Andrews Ihre Manieren sind schon immer tadellos gewesen, sie ist freundlich, bescheiden und zuvorkommend. Das klingt so gar nicht nach einem H o l l y w o o d s t a r, doch genau zu ihnen zählt Julie Andrews nun seit über 50 Jahren. Im vergangenen Jahr feierte die beliebte Schauspielerin und außergewöhnlich begabte Sängerin ihren 80. Geburtstag. Andrews, die 1935 im britischen Walton-on-Thames zur Welt kam, ließ schon früh sehr viel Talent erkennen: Ihr Stiefvater Ted Andrews w a r Va u d e v i l l e Künstler und hatte ein Ohr für gute

Baronets bis zu Buschauffeuren, besuchten uns. Wahrscheinlich stellte unsere Leihbüchereikundschaft einen angemessenen Durchschnitt der lesenden Londoner dar... Es stimmt nicht, dass Männer keine Romane lesen; aber es ist wahr, dass es ganze Zweige der erzählenden Literatur gibt, die sie meiden. Ganz allgemein kann man sagen, dass der sogenannte Durchschnittsroman - der gewöhnliche, weder gute noch schlechte Galsworthy- und See-

pro Woche, neben denen, die er sich noch aus einer anderen Leihbücherei holte. Am meisten überraschte mich dabei, dass er niemals dasselbe Buch zweimal las. Anscheinend war diese ganze, gewaltige Flut (die jedes Jahr von ihm gelesenen Seiten würden, wie ich mir ausrechnete, so ungefähr dreiviertel Morgen Land bedecken) für immer in seinem Gedächtnis untergebracht. Er sah weder nach dem Titel noch nach dem Namen des Autors, sondern

brauchte nur einen Blick in ein Buch zu werfen, um sagen zu können, ob er es «schon gehabt» hatte. In einer Leihbibliothek bekommt man den wirklichen Geschmack der Leute zu sehen, nicht den vorgetäuschten; und was einem da besonders auffällt, ist, wie vollständig die «klassischen» englischen Romanciers in Ungnade gefallen sind.

Beim blossen Anblick eines Romans aus dem neunzehnten Jahrhundert sagen die Leute: «Oh, der ist aber alt!» und schrecken sofort davor zurück. Dickens zu verkaufen ist dagegen immer noch ziemlich einfach, und das gleiche trifft für Shakespeare zu. Dickens ist einer von jenen Autoren, den die Leute immer «vorha-

bittet, ein Buch für ihn auszusuchen, beginnt er sein Ansuchen fast stets mit den Worten: «Ich möchte aber keine Kurzgeschichten» oder «Ich wünsche keine kleinen Geschichten», wie einer unserer deutschen Kunden das zu formulieren pflegte. Wenn man sie nach dem Grund für ihre Ablehnung fragt, erklären sie manchmal, dass es viel zu viel Mühe mache, sich mit jeder Geschichte an eine neue Garnitur handelnder Personen zu gewöhnen. Sie «vertiefen» sich viel lieber in einen Roman, der nach dem ersten Kapitel kein weiteres Nachdenken mehr von ihnen verlangt. Ob ich ein Buchhändler de métier sein möchte? Alles in allem - trotz der mir entgegengebrachten Freundlichkeit meines Arbeitgebers und einiger glücklicher Tage, die ich in dem Laden verbracht habe – nein... Fortsetzung folgt!

Locker vom Hocker Swakopmund (sk) In der Desert Tavern herrschte Hochstimmung, als zig Saxophone in ihr Mundstück bliesen. BigBand-Leiterin Christiane Ast übertrug ihre Energie auf das eh schon recht eingeheizte Publikum. Die Stimmung war famos, und die dynamische Musik des Swakopmunder Blechbläser-Ensembles sorgte dafür, dass die Gäste nicht locker ließen, eh die Kapelle zweieinhalb Stunden länger gespielt hatten.

Liebe Küstenleser! Mit dem nötigen Kleingeld kommt man in dieser Welt ganz gut zurecht. Ohne dieses ist man ziemlich aufgeschmissen und machtlos den Händen der Willkür und Ineffizienz ausgeliefert. Vor einiger Zeit entdeckte mein Ohrenarzt ein fremdes Objekt in meinem linken Ohr, das er mit den gängigen Arztpraxis-Utensilien und selbst mit einer Spülung nicht entfernen konnte, weil es sehr tief lag. Also ab ins Krankenhaus, wo man eine halbe Stunde im OP brauchte, um ein Stück Plastik aus meinem Gehörgang zu entfernen, das sich von dem Oropax gelöst hatte, mit welchem ich regelmäßig meine Ohren zum Schutz gegen den grässlichen Umweltlärm zustopfe. Das ganze Tammtamm um ein verdammtes Ministück Gummi hat eine gehörige Stange Geld gekostet, die größtenteils von unserer Krankenkasse gedeckt wird. Anders sieht es bei Ramana Kandongo aus. Die als Haushilfe tätige Hererofrau hat eine Tochter, der seit geraumer Zeit ein “Hänge-Auge” zu schaffen macht - aus ästhetischen Gründen natürlich, wie es sich für ein pubertierendes Mädchen gehört. Also pilgert Ramana mit ihr ins Swakopmunder Staatskrankenhaus, nicht etwa, weil sie vorher telefonisch einen Termin dort ausgemacht hat. Nein, im Staatskrankenhaus setzt man sich morgens um 7 Uhr auf eine verdreckte Bank und wartet geduldig. Wenn man Glück hat, wird man irgendwann

im Laufe des Vormittags aufgerufen und darf dann die Oberschwester sehen. Ist Fortuna einem weniger wohlgesonnen, muss man bis nachmittags warten. Hat man völlig Pech und wurde bis 17 Uhr nicht aufgerufen, geht es unverrichteter Dinge wieder nach Hause, und am nächsten Tag beginnt der ganze Schlamassel von vorne. Ramana durfte nachmittags die “Oberschwester” sehen, die ihr Augentropfen verschrieb. Liebe Leser,

Er rät ihr zu Bluttesten und einem Kopf-Scan, um herauszufinden, ob es sich um etwas Ernsthaftes handelt. Also macht sie sich mit ihrer Tochter wieder auf den Weg ins Staatskrankenhaus und wartet und wartet....bis sie endlich die Oberschwester dort sehen darf, die allerdings empört darüber ist, dass Ramana ihr vorzuschreiben wagt, Laborteste und einen Scan machen zu lassen. Halb widerwillig schickt sie sie mit Tochter zum dortigen Doktor Kaputu, der ihr eine ärztliche Verweisung ins Staatskrankenhaus in Windhoek gibt. Jeden Mittwoch morgen fahren staatlich finanzierte Busse die Staatspatienten nach Windhoek, wo sie am Donnerstag ihre jeweiligen Termine wahrnehmen, um am Freitag wieder zurück nach Swakopmund gefahren zu werden. Eines Tages wird Ramana dann ins Swakopmunder Hospital zitiert, wo sie wieder den ganzen Tag mit ihrer Tochter verbringt, lediglich um von der Oberschwester zu erfahren, dass die Labortestergebnisse zwar angekommen sind, der Arzt jedoch gerade nicht zur Verfügung steht. Also geht es am nächsten Tag wieder ins Krankenhaus, wo der Arzt ihr mitteilt, dass er mit den Ergebnissen nichts anzufangen weiss und die beiden wieder nach Windhoek müssten. Es ist nicht die Odyssee alleine, liebe Leser, die so zermürbend ist, weil immens viel kostbare Zeit durch mangelnde Leistungsfähigkeit verloren geht. Mutter Ramana bleibt tage- und wochenlang von der Arbeit fern, Tochter Matjiti geht tage- und wochenlang nicht zur Schule. Und das ist nur die Spitze des Eisbergs von negativen Folgen. Diesmal weigere ich mich, mit dem Journalisten Bartholomäus Grill entmutigt-seufzend in ein Horn zu blasen: “Ach, Afrika!” Ich will schreien: “Afrika, zieh deine verdammten Socken hoch!!!” Ihre Susann Kinghorn

Erongo Region Open Athletics The Walvis Bay National Championships featuring World Gasshuku Training Seminar U/18 High Jump Champion Breyton Poole The 2017 Walvis Bay National Gasshuku Karate training seminar took place on the 12 August 2017 in Walvis Bay. More than one hundred GojoRyu Karate members from the club in Walvis Bay and Windhoek attended the seminar.

The Erongo Region Open Athletics Championships Presented by Swakop Striders Athletic Club will be on 26 August 2017. It promises to be a special event with some of Namibia's top athletes in action. The following disciplines will be presented: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, Shot Put, Discus, Javelin, Long Jump, and High Jump. The age groups that will be accommodated are U/15, U/17, boy and girls and open athletes. This year's event will also cater for physically challenged athletes. As a special incentive to current and future high jumpers, Breyton Poole, the recently crowned World U/18 High Jump Champion from South Africa will participate. Apart from competing against Namibian high jumpers, he will give an exhibition of high jumping at The Dome Indoor Sport Complex in Swakopmund, in the evening. Breyton Poole will be accompanied by his father, Herman Poole, and his coach Bennie Schlechter. The 17-year old athlete, who is only 1,72m tall, won the world championship U/18 High Jump title in Nairobi by clearing the height of 2,24m.

The event will be at the Swakopmund Athletics Stadium in Vineta and will start at 08:00 on the morning of 26th August. All athletes must be at the Swakopmund Athletics Stadium by 07:00 to confirm their participation. Both track and field events should be completed by 16:00. At 19:00 the action moves to "The Dome" Indoor Sports Complex for the medal presentations; these will not be the typical presentations, as several surprises are awaiting the spectators. At this function, we will honouring our sponsors as well as also honouring long serving athletes and coaches. Breyton Poole will give an exhibition in high jumping, allowing spectators to see this talented athlete in action from only meters away. The evening will close with a dance. Food will be available to purchase and there will be a cash bar. We appeal to the Namibian public to come and support this event. Tickets will be available at the gate/door.

Presenter of the seminar was Sensei Carl van der Merwe, 7th Dan, and Chief Instructor of Namibia, assisted by other Instructors. The training seminar was to expose members to a broader picture of Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate. Students with white Belts to Black Belts were taught individual training exercises that are helping to expand student's vision of the art, in turn to stimulate and preserve their interests. There is no substitute for the basic training that members receives from his/her own instructor, but here's an opportunity to focus on facets not generally dealt with extensively during classes and an opportunity for social interaction with peers. Each member experienced the event differently, but general benefits of this seminar was, more individual attention was possible because the students were split into smaller groups of the same level that was training at different times. Members can assess and compare themselves against members from other classes. The seminar was divided in three groups with three sessions that started at the Walvis Bay Dojo. The Second Session took place at the Lagoon. That was all students older than 12 up to Black Belts were the students were taught selfdefence techniques. The last session took place at the Walvis Bay Dojo and in this session the students learned different variations and techniques of free style practice. The seminar ended with a relaxed social function after a long day of intense training.

Momentum Under 19 T20 Cricket Tournament This year marks the fourth year of the Momentum under 19 T20 cricket tournament and will be in conjunction with Windhoek High School’s centenary celebrations. The tournament will be from 28 August to 2 September.

In action at a previous event at Swakopmund

The Welwitschia Coastal 11 team will compete against Windhoek High School, Windhoek Gymnasium, Windhoek Afrikaans Private School, Pro-Ed Academy and a Country District team. The under 19 schools team from Zimbabwe and the Boland under 19 team from South Africa will also be in the mix for the trophy. The Country District team is made up of players selected from all rural towns in Namibia. The tournament will start at seven o'clock every day and will be until nine o'clock in the evening. This will give all the players the opportunity to play under flood lights. The official opening will be on 28 August at five o'clock with the final game on 2 September 2017 with the prize giving after the game.

WBPHS and Pro-Ed in Momentum Boards Trophy Finals Tomorrow is the day for the U/13 and U/19 teams of Walvis Bay Private High School and the U/11A and U/19A teams of Pro-Ed Academy. The teams are on their way to Windhoek for the Momentum Boards Rugby Trophy Finals. These two schools did very well in their respective age groups in the Leagues this year and deserve to be in the finals. The U/13 team of Walvis Bay Private High School reached the finals in the League after they won their semi-final game 31-20 against the U/13 team of Moria Private School. The team of Walvis Bay Private High School is the favourite to win the final against the U/13A team of Pionierspark Primary School. Last mentioned beat the U/13 team of Ruimte Primary School 41-19 to qualify for the finals. In the U/11 league final the U/11 A team of Pro-Ed Academy (that won their semi-final 33-17 against the U/13 of St. Joseph) are up against the U/11A team of Windhoek

Gymnasium. In the U/19 final the U/19A team of Pro-Ed Academy will lock horns with KPS. In the super final the first team of Walvis Bay Private High School U/19 reached the final when the Naartjies beat the first team of Windhoek High School 20-16 in the semifinal. Walvis Bay Private High School’s U/19 team will play Windhoek Gymnasium in the final of the Momentum Schools U/19 Super League. namib times wishes both our coastal schools all the best for this important rugby weekend.

Namibian national U/19 Ladies Cricket Team

Under 19 Ladies Cricket Team to Defend Trophy in Botswana The Namibian national Under 19 ladies cricket team will be leaving for Gaborone, Botswana to defend the eight nation's tournaments trophy that they won lasts year. This year the tournament will be from 24 to 27 August. This annual tournament is a highlight for under 19 women's cricket. The Namibia U/19 ladies team will be at the coast in Walvis Bay and Swakopmund from tomorrow until Monday for their last training camp. The team departs to Botswana on 23 August. They are the defending champions after their victory last year in the eight nations tournament against Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho, Mozambique, Malawi, Sierra Leone and a South African invitational team. They will play a T20 match format match against a Walvis Bay invitational team tomorrow at the Walvis Bay Cricket oval at 09:00. On Monday the team plays a coastal invitation team in Swakopmund at the municipal cricket grounds. This game starts at 09: 00. The Senior Namibian National women's cricket team will leave for Zimbabwe on Sunday (20 August) for warm-up games in Harare. The Namibian team will play four T20 games on Monday and Tuesday and then return to Namibia on Wednesday. There is a possibility the national team will also play two T20 warm-up games on 3 & 4 September against the Kenyan women's national team. All these warm-up games are in preparation of the International Cricket Council Women's Africa T20 Qualifiers that is played from 8 to 16 September in Windhoek. Namibia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania will compete in the Africa T20 Qualifier with the winning country and possibly the second placed country as well, going through to the final qualifying competition.
