Chased away at Walvis Bay State Hospital Eileen van der Schyff A Walvis Bay woman shared her horrifying experience with namib times this week of how a medical practitioner at the town's state hospital cut open a septic wound without administering an anaesthetic. When she became hysterical of pain and shock, she was chased away without the wound being properly closed up again after it was cleaned. The woman had a caesarean recently, but the operation wound became septic and she turned to the Walvis Bay state hospital for assistance. To clean the wound, the doctor had to cut it open. She (the doctor) did

so without administering an anaesthetic and when the women screamed and cried she replied with the words “I know it is sore, just stop screaming and don't be such a sissy”. The young woman had a caesarean at the Rehoboth state hos-

pital recently, but sadly the baby died days later. She came to Walvis Bay and discovered after some days that all is not well. The operation wound partly started to open and it was clear that the wound had inflammation to it and was

becoming septic. At the hospital she was told to lay down, expecting the doctor to dress the wound. Within a few seconds she felt immense pain. So severe and intense the pain was that she started to scream and cry.

“The doctor did not tell me that she was going to cut open my wound. I just suddenly felt this severe pain and started to scream”, the woman told namib times in an interview at her home in Walvis Bay on Saturday afternoon. Adding she was shocked beyond belief when the doctor made those arrogant and unsympathetic remarks. According to the

woman the doctor then instructed a nurse to bring her a Panado for the pain. The doctor allegedly simply carried on despite the woman's immense pain and said all woman go through this as “this is the way it is done here”. After a few minutes more, the doctor instructed the nurse, who was standing by throughout the whole procedure, to take over Continues on page 2

All this with the woman now hysterical and still no anaesthetic administered. The nurse too was rude. According to the woman the nurse said the doctor informed her that she [the patient] has an attitude problem. According to the woman the final straw came for her when the nurse wanted to insert a needle into the open wound. “I screamed as loud as I could, as this was what I could take. It was then when the nurse became angry and told me to get up and leave the hospital and never to return”, the woman explained during the interview. The wound was left open. She is visibly and audibly still deeply shocked at what she had to go through. What also makes it immensely difficult for her is the fact that through all of this she also has to deal with her baby's death. The woman's husband also during the interview told the namib times when he wanted to find out who the doctor was, he was silenced and dismissed with the words: “what do you want to do with the doctor's name?” The nurse involved also did not want to disclose her name. The family of the young woman sent a letter to the Chief Medical Officer, acting regional Director of the Erongo Regional Health Directorate, Amir Shaker, explaining what had happened at the hospital. He replied with an email saying that he acknowledges receiving the email and will answer once he gets all the information from the district. They are still waiting for a reply.

The duo both deny guilt and said they never visited Brazil, never packed the freight container and never formed part of any pact to traffic cocaine into Namibia. In fact the duo says they were highly surprised that cocaine was found in their container. The freight container arrived in Walvis Bay on 8 June from Cape Town. At the time the authorities already knew the container was laden with cocaine, stashed in a consignment of office copy paper Noble and Azhar imported into Namibia. The container was placed under surveillance and it was Noble and Azhar who attempted to clear it. The Police opened the container and found a substance they suspected was cocaine. In the meantime laboratory tests confirmed it was in fact cocaine. The State remains sceptic over Noble and Azhar’s version of events. It simply does not make sense that a Brazilian entity would place cocaine in a shipping container destined to Namibia to a consignee whom they don’t know or to whom they have no connections. The bail application resumes on 3 September.

A ruptured pipe sent millions of liters of fresh water onto the streets in Walvis Bay in the early hours of Thursday. The municipality of Walvis Bay’s water maintenance team found the point where the pipe ruptured in Sam Nujoma Avenue. It was repaired immediately. Data flow a priority on ministry's agenda The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources held a joint workshop with the National Statistics Agency (NSA) on the statistical flow of data this week Wednesday in Swakopmund.

Police honour their three colleagues killed in car accident last Saturday

Dozens of members of the Namibian Police Force stationed at the coast attended the memorial service on Wednesday afternoon for three of its members killed in a car crash last Saturday near Kalkfeld. The deceased members were all stationed at Walvis Bay. They are: Sgt Haididila Likuwa (34), Sgt Allan Hoebeb (42) and Sgt Paulina Nakale (40). Members of the family of the deceased officers also attended the memorial that was held at the Walvis Bay town hall. â€œThere is need to find and resolve the bottlenecks that are hindering us from producing high quality and timely statistical data, as reliable statistics are a crucial criterion for the evidence-based planning and policy formulation; at both national and local levelsâ€?, said the minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources in his speech which was delivered on his behalf by the Permanent Secretary Dr Moses Maurihungirire. The fisheries sector plays a major role in contributing to national development, food security and sustainable development. The ministry's National Development Plan 5 (NDP5) report shows a decrease of 3% in landings for 2017/18, (524 44MT) as compared to what was landed in 2016/17. The two day workshop facilitated by the Director of Policy Planning and Economics, Ms Anna Mungungu focused on the challenges affecting the process of data flow within the ministry and a discussion on the way forward. During an interview with namib times Maurihungirire revealed the ministry's combined efforts to enhance the processing of data in all areas of the department as well as the necessity of landings data. A representative from the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources shed more light on the importance of this crucial data with regards to fishing rights, adding that applications for fishing rights were open until 30 August. Vehicle sales increased by 5,2 % â€œm-o-mâ€? Vehicle sales increased by 5.2% m-o-m in July 2018 following a 23.5% growth rate in the prior month. However, on an annual basis, vehicle sales contracted by 10.1% to 1 194 units in July 2018.

The monthly upsurge is attributed to a 30.5%, 19.2% and 40.0% growth rate in passenger vehicles, medium commercial vehicles and heavy commercial vehicles, respectively. Moreover, the annual contraction was fuelled by light commercial and extra heavy vehicles which contracted by 31.9% and 15.4%, respectively, in July 2018. Four out of fifty eight brands make up 78.2% of the total vehicle sales (Figure 2). Toyota, which accounts for 44.1%, registered a decline of 13.7% m-o-m to 527 units in July 2018. This is below the four year simple average of 574 units. Furthermore, Volkswagen, the second

largest brand (14.5% market share), increased by 35.2% m-o-m to 173 units in July 2018. As pressure persists in the motor vehicle industry, certain brands have either reduced or halted their importation in 2018. In particular, Chevrolet moved from 160 units in 2017 (Jan-Jul) to zero during the same period in 2018. In addition, BMW and Audi have reduced from above 19 units in 2014 to as low as 5 and 8 units respectively, in July 2018, clearly indicating pressure. We continue to see price reductions on high value vehicles coupled with other incentives such as payment holidays and below prime rate offerings. (Simonis Storm)

Bail application - Noble & Ashar Dinath Ashar and Grant Noble, the two prime suspects nabbed in what became the biggest cocaine bust in Namibia's history, will start with a formal bail application in the Walvis Bay magistrate's court this morning. This bail hearing is set to continue until Thursday. Ashar and Noble (pictured) were arrested on Friday, 15 June this year, after 413kg of cocaine were found stashed in a cargo container in the port of Walvis Bay. The container, which originated in Brazil via Cape Town, was laden with carton boxes of photocopy paper (pictured) which also served as the means to conceal the haul of cocaine. Various agencies, which included law enforcement and customs, placed the container under surveillance since it first arrived in port aboard the container vessel Amanda D on 8 June. When Ashar and Noble came to clear the container, the net closed around them. It is believed both Ashar and Noble have a wealth of information to share with the investigating team, as it is believed they were not alone in the deal which saw the cocaine shipped from Brazil to Cape Town and then on to Walvis Bay. Autism Association supports Stepping Stones “Biggest donation to date since the inception of the Autism Association in 2012” The Autism Association of Namibia – Coastal Branch – is delighted and excited to make its biggest donation yet to a beneficiary, since its inception in 2012. An amount of N$ 50 000 was handed over on 10 August 2018, to the Swakopmundbased 'Stepping Stone School', by Mr. and Mrs Haller, codirectors of the Autism Association of Namibia and representatives of the Coastal Branch. According to Mrs Almarie Mostert, the founder of Stepping Stones School, who

works with children on the Autism spectrum, the donation will be used for the planning – and construction of an Autism Centre. This Centre will be established at Swakopmund. Large donations are still needed from the local-, national- and international business communities to make this project come to full reality.

Soll man lachen oder weinen ob der jetzigen Situation der Parkplatzwächter? In den Lokal- und Ta g e s z e i t u n g e n wurde uns die neue Situation geschildert, z.B., dass man eine Stunde frei parken kann und dann erst zahlen muss. Es soll aber gleich bezahlt werden , wenn man sein Auto abstellt, und wenn man zu seinem Auto zu-

Viele Straßenzüge werden weiterhin von den “ alten” Wächtern patrouilliert, und es herrscht große Unzufriedenheit ob der ganzen Situation unter ihnen. Hat man sie überhaupt konsultiert, bevor man ein neues System einführte ? Die "alten" Wachposten hatten ein sog. Abkommen bis Ende Dezember 2018 mit der Stadtverwaltung, waren namentlich erfasst und haben Identitätskarten bei sich sowie die Jacken an, mit Nummern darauf. Die Geschäftswelt (Handelskammer) ist auch gefragt, sich geschlossen gegen das neue System zu wehren. Die Kunden parken nicht nur woanders, sie kaufen auch woanders ein. Kleinere Läden haben das Nachsehen. Es sollen Arbeitsplätze geschaffen werden. Möglichst viele Leute sollen von einem System profitieren, hier aber profitiert jetzt nur der Betreiber. Die Wächter bekommen keinen Tipp mehr und haben weniger als die Wachen vorher. Wie kann die Stadtverwaltung so etwas zulassen, wo sie immer betont, alles für die Arbeitsplatzbeschaffung zu tun? Liebe Küstenleser! Der Zirkus um das Parken und seine Wächter, die sich gegenseitig mit Fäusten um die rar gewordenen Jobs bearbeitet haben, scheint sich vorläufig gelegt zu haben. Das Scheitern des neuen Parksystems war vorauszusehen. Mich persönlich aber hat am meisten gefreut, dass die unüberlegte Einführung dieses Novums in Swakopmund ohne lautstarken Protest und völlig unbewusst boykottiert wurde. Kein großes Tammtamm, kein Toitoin, kein Fäusteheben, kein Herumschreien, keine Protestschilder! Man blieb einfach nur der

Zwischendurch warnt sie den Mann, dass es gefährlich nach verbrannten Skaaptschopps riecht. Der Mann nimmt das als Anlass, noch ein Bier zu downen, von dem er ein paar Tröpfchen für die Tschopps opfert, um sie vor dem völligen Ruin zu bewahren. Der Mann packt die fertigen Fleischfladen in den Topf, den die Frau ihm gebracht hat. Die Frau arrangiert die Teller, den Salat, das Brot, das Besteck, die Servietten und Saucen und bringt alles zum Tisch raus. Nach dem Essen räumt die

Frau den Tisch ab, wäscht das Geschirr. Fazit? Alle loben den Mann für seine Kochkünste und danken ihm für das tolle Braai. FNB Swakopmund Betterball Stableford The weather conditions were good for golf at the FNB Swakopmund annual Betterball Stableford competition on Saturday, 11 August is on course despite the absence of some of the regular Saturday golfers – participating in the SAGES Tsumeb tournament the field was reasonable. It was a great day and was enjoyed all. Thanks to Mare Steenekamp and Samuel Franz from FNB Swakopmund for making the day possible. Anton Bonifatius was successful in shooting the only 2-club for the day on Number 3. CFC inflicts defeat on SKW Magic Discounters Teams in the Bank Windhoek Fistball League displayed exciting performances in the League's fourth round matches held in Swakopmund over the weekend. This was the last matches ahead of the Bank Windhoek Fistball Championship playoffs. As it stands, Cohen Fistball Club's (CFC 1) victory, over current champions, Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW), narrowed the gap to two points at the top of the league table. Despite having the home turf advantage, Swakopmund Fussball Club (SFC), were beaten by CFC 1 who dominated Group A as they also defeated Deutscher Turn und Sportverein (DTS) and SKW 2 with the same a score line of 3-0. SKW 2 went on to defeat DTS and SFC. The latter managed to win their tough encounter with DTS who were resilient throughout the match but eventually succumbed to defeat. At the end of the group stages, SKW 2 and SFC ended on equal points. They had to be separated by goal difference. As a result, SKW 2 progressed to the semi-final stage. Group B saw SKW 1 beat all three of Cohen Fistball Club's teams with a comfortable score of 3-0. Only CFC 2 came close to a set victory, but their hopes were swept aside by a strong performance from SKW 1. CFC 2 then went on to beat their club mates CFC 3 and CFC 4 after tough encounters between the three teams. This ensured a CFC 2 qualification for the semi-finals. CFC 3 also registered a win as they later beat CFC 4 30.In the first semi-final match, CFC 1 beat CFC 2 2-0. SKW 1 also won 2-0 against their reserve SKW 2 in the second semi-final.The last four teams battled it out in the second round fixtures where CFC 3 won against DTS and SFC beat CFC 4 after a fierce contest. SKW 2 secured the third place after an encounter against CFC 2 with a final score line of 3-2 in the placement games. CFC 3 put up a resounding performance as they fought hard against SFC whom they defeated to claim the fifth place. DTS beat CFC 4 and secured the seventh place, sending their opponents in the bottom of the placements. The final game of the day was between CFC 1 and SKW 1. CFC 1 started off the better team as they managed to build an early lead and won the first set. But the second set belonged to SKW 1 after they placed CFC 1 under extreme pressure, which proved too much and as a result, CFC 1 stumbled in a 13-11 defeat. Both teams came back stronger in the third and final set. CFC's KühnleKreitz and SKW 1's Michael Baas, were in top form as they scored at will one after the other. Finally, CFC's youthful team emerged victories and claimed the set 14-12. This was translated in a 3-0 win

for CFC 1. SFCs' TorbenWinterbach walked away with the Player of the Day trophy after putting up a notable performance for his team. After some confusion regarding the format of the MAGIC DISCOUNTERS day, all ended well and a field of 32 played a straight forward better ball. It was Frans and Justine Grobler who won the first prize on a count out from Jonas Niilenge and Eugene Venter with a credible 48 points. The third prize went to Wouter van Wijk and Piet van Niekerk. The Namibian Senior Women's team are on their way to Botswana for the ACCR Region 7 Ladies International Cricket Tournament from the 20th – 26th August 2018 at the BCA OVAL in Gaborone, Botswana. This will be the first ever ICC Ranked Women's T20 format tournament to be played in Botswana. The 7 participating nations that will play in the ACCR Region 7 International Cricket tournament are Namibia, Botswana, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Zambia, Mozambique and Lesotho. Namibia will play their first game on Monday, 20 August against Malawi. On the next day the Ladies will face off against Zambia. August 23 it will be against Sierra Leone. The 24th will feature will be against Lesotho. August 25 the ladies will play against Mozambique. The last game will be against the host nation Botswana on August 26. The First Girls Development Team participating in Cricket Festival The Annual Walvis Bay Salt Refiners Coastal Junior Cricket Festival that caters for under 11 and 13 boys and girls for the sake of building a solid cricket foundation and with Development as the focus point will be hosted by Welwitschia Cricket and Cricket Namibia from 20 to 24 August in Walvis Bay and Swakopmund. Managing Director of the Walvis Bay Salt Refiners Andre Snyman said “Our Company is 54 years old and is the biggest sea salt producer in Africa and we are proud to be associated with the Coastal Junior Cricket Festival for the 4th consecutive year”. Over the past few years Walvis Bay Salt Refiners consistantly reinvest profits in the business and in Namibia, and with the completion of the new wash plant the production volumes will soon reach 1 million tons of high quality sea salt per annum. “Not only is mineral beneficiation one of our key focus areas, but we are also honoured to be involved in the development of young talent through our sponsorship. Therefore, we are overconfident to celebrating the 22nd Junior Cricket Festival at the coast, and we are proud to confirm that the former great Namibian international all rounder Craig Williams has agreed to officiate at this year's event” Snyman said. This prestigious cricket festival had its origin in 1996 under the Welwitschia Schools Academy, and was called the Interschool Cricket Championships. The event was established by cricket enthusiasts being the late Mr Chucky Dobson, who passed away in 2010, Mrs Greta Holst and Mr Ian van der Walt. Trophies were sponsored by Hickory Creek Spur at that stage. During 2000, with the departure of Mr Ian van der Walt, Mr Eugene van der Walt took over and the tournament became known as the Hickory Creek Spur Inter school Cricket tournament. Spur continued their sponsorship until 2009. During 2001 the Spur Group expanded their sponsorship to include medals, trophies, umpires and scorers T-shirts. Paradise Beverages made soft drinks available to players. Although cricket at the school level was managed by the NSSU, the Namibia Cricket Board started to acknowledge this tournament and assisted by sponsoring match balls with the assistance of ICC-ACA. The further success of this event can also be laid at the feet of cricket personalities including Otto Mack and John Heynes. These gentlemen organized this festival, as the enrolment of teams and players increased over the years. The tournament has became a regular feature on the Namibian School Calendars ever since. This festival also won the International Cricket Council (ICC)'s development awards for best junior cricket promotional program-development initiative during 2003 and 2006. At the end of the 2003 tournament, Greta Holst

stepped down as main organizer and handed the reigns over to Otto Mack. For the past three years, Mr Mack concentrated on the financial side of the festival while Mr John Heynes took over the organizing department. During 2010 the Walvis Bay offices of Spar and FNB Namibia got involved with sponsorships. During 2014 Walvis Bay Salt Refiners took over the sponsorship and became the new “PARTNER” of the cricket festival which is now known as the Walvis Bay Salt Refiners Junior Cricket Festival. For many years, this event has given the players great pleasure and allowed them to develop their skills and love for the game. The founders, organizers and sponsors over the years should be delighted that so many Namibian senior cricket players actually played their first ever cricket matches as juniors at this festival. 11 Members of the Namibian U19 squad that participated in the 2016 & 2018 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in Bangladesh and New Zealand played at this festival. This festival's main focus is on cricket development and the promotion of the game. This year's event is once again dedicated to all junior schoolboy cricketers. We believe that all players, coaches, managers and supporters will enjoy this year's event and trust long and lasting memories will be created with new friendship that will be formed and old ones continued on and off the field of play. Very important is the promoting a positive cricket etiquette and spirit of the game Heynes added. Heynes mentioned that there will be three Development Teams from Walvis Bay, of which one is the Kuisebmond Development Girls Team is the First Girls Development Team and two Development Teams from Outjo that will participate in Cricket Festival. “A special word of thanks must also go to the coaches and managers who have curtailed their holidays in order to be with their teams for this festival, as well as the people behind the scenes who are making sure the grounds are ready before the matches as well as all the officials, i.e. umpires and scorers as well as to our sponsor Walvis Bay Salt Refiners, thank you for this wonderful partnership and investment in our youth and future national players.
