The bulk carrier Atlantic Dream is expected alongside in the port Leopard Attack: of Walvis Bay next Tuesday to load Namibia’s first export consignment of lithium ore to China. The ore belongs to Desert Lion Energy, which operates a lithium mine some 30km southeast of Karibib. Known as the Desert Lion Lithium Project, the mine in the past was first known as Rubicon, Helikon and Mircolite, before it was purchased by Chinese Desert Lion Energy. A quay side function in the port of Walvis Bay next Tuesday will celebrate this first lithium export to China.

Mr Hardy Specker (61) who was attacked by a leopard in the Gaub-pass area on Thursday is making a satisfactory recovery and is expected to be discharged from the Welwitschia Private Hospital on the weekend. He and his life partner Petra Windmeisser (60), will then return to Germany without delay. The couple camped in a river in the Gaubpass area in the safety of their overlander truck. At around 01:00 on Thursday, the couple heard something outside the truck and when Specker stood up to close a window, the
leopard lunged at him. The powerfull leopard got hold of Specker by sinking its teeth into his head as the animal’s front paw nails slashed into his shoulder and neck. As the leopard tried to pull the helpless and profusely bleeding
Specker through the window, Windmeisser got hold of his legs and pulled him back into the truck. Several agonising hours followed. Specker was gravely injured and was losing blood. The leopard Continues on page 2

for us. We have to queue up for hours just to fetch water. We have complained about this, but no one has done anything about it. It is so bad that you find close to a hundred people at one water point. Currently, the only taps working are the one at the old fire station and the one right in front of the clinic”, he explained. namib times visited the informal settlement on Tuesday morning and confirmed Kameya's allegations. The newspaper found residents at the two water points. Kemeya further stated that these communal taps are hardly maintained and that the situation worsened last weekend. As there is less taps working, residents have to wait for up to four hours to get water. Another resident, Leonard Itana said the taps were also adding another problem: He alleged the taps are not providing the right amount of water corresponding with the prepaid value available on the prepaid water cards. “You may have N$100 worth of water on your token, but only get N$13 worth of water at the end”, Ithana explained. Adding the prepaid taps often fails necessitating people who already queue for extended hours having to go to another communal tap to get water. The taps are also not evenly distributed across the DRC, meaning many people have to walk long distances. Elungi Sem, who recently moved to the settlement, said the situation is worse for people with large households. That means they have to walk to get water several times as day. Some get up as early as 03:00 and 04:00 to be able to get water and still have to meet other household obligations. When contacted for comment on the matter, the Swakopmund municipality's spokesperson, Ailie Gebhardt contradicted the allegations. She confirmed there were 28 taps, but to her knowledge only six were not functioning. She added a maintenance team checking up on the taps three times a week. She acknowledged there were frequent complaints over water supply in DRC, but also attributed that partly to vandalism. “It is a common problem for the residents to vandalise the taps. They tamper with the metering mechanism of the taps, by using screwdrivers. They do this to get water for free, but what they don’t realize is if they break the taps it will mean no water will be available for anyone”. Some even steal the metering systems’ batteries, rendering the device obsolete. It takes weeks to replace the batteries and other mechanisms as the spare parts and batteries have to be sourced from South Africa. “We have spoken to the residents about vandalism but our words have fallen on deaf ears”, she explained.

Five in court over two stolen cattle carcasses on pick-up Five suspects were arrested on Thursday for allegedly stealing and slaughtering two heads of cattle, valued at N$30 000 at the farm Ombujomaere near Karibib. According to the Namibian Police’s crime investigator in Erongo, Erastus Iikuyu, the suspects were arrested around midnight with the two carcasses of cattle transported in a white Isuzu pick-up. That was on the road between Karibib and Okahandja, within the Erongo boundary. The suspects are: Katunana Muteze, Jesaya Kavari, Nelson Nangolo, Ricardo Blaauw and Standley Kandi, aged between 29-47. The suspects made a first appearance on a charge of stock theft in the Karibib magistrates court yesterday.
Erongo RED apologizes for prepaid system crash Regional electricity distributor Erongo RED, apologized for any inconvenience prepaid customers in Erongo suffered, after its prepaid electricity vending system crashed due to a hardware malfunction on Tuesday, 10 April. Electricity consumers who did not have sufficient credit on their prepaid metres to bridge the nearly 24 hours gap in which there was no prepaid electricity services available were hit the worst. In a statement, Erongo RED said the following: “On Tuesday, 10 April , Erongo RED experienced a technical problem on the main hardware component of the electricity vending system. As a result, all vendors were unable to sell electricity. The problem only affected prepaid electricity customers throughout the region who did not have sufficient units at the time. After the main component was recovered from the back-up facility, the technicians experienced another technical problem in their attempt to restart the system. On Wednesday, 11 April around 18h30, the technicians succeeded in restoring the vending services and vendors resumed with selling electricity to the general public. Maximum resources were deployed and a number of customers were assisted through an emergency vending facility from Head Office. Specialists are closely monitoring the system to avoid similar occurrences. The prepaid vending system is now running smoothly and customers are welcome to purchase prepaid electricity at any vending points. We wish to express our sincere regret for the inconvenience our customers may have experienced as a result of the unavailability of vending services. Erongo RED regards our relationships with our customers as absolutely important to the organisation. We also want to thank prepaid customers who were affected during the recent vending problem for their patience and understanding.”

Two vehicle accidents reported over weekend Melba Kaura Two people were injured on Saturday at Usakos when the vehicle in which they were traveling spun out of control at hit a boundary wall at the Usakos Engen service station. The driver of the sedan was a certain Gert Bezuidenhout (63). Two passengers were injured. They were identified as Pietersen Hendrick and Markus Goseb. Both were transported to the Katutura State Hospital in Windhoek for medical treatment. In another accident, on Friday afternoon, a white Mahindra pick-up with an Omaruru registration number was involved in an accident on the gravel road between Omaruru and Uis. The driver was twenty-six-year old Ivan Brandt. The vehicle hit a puddle of water in the road and the driver lost control causing the Mahindra to overturn. Two passengers, Oscha Brandt and Reinhold Nghiimbwasha, were injured.

Some 700 people attended Namibia's “belated” Independence Celebrations at Usakos over the weekend. Every year, the Erongo Region celebrates Independence some weeks after the main celebrations that takes place on 21 March. The Governor of Erongo Clr Cleophas Mutjavikua continues this tradition by his predecessors to hold the belated celebrations each year some weeks after the main event, to provide people of rural Erongo the opportunity to also share in the Namibia's independence festivities. As is also custom, the Head of State, President Hage Geingob's independence message is presented.
Thieves use “blind spot” to burgle gambling house Floris Steenkamp
The gambling spot, Orange Gaming, in Walvis Bay’s central business district was targeted by burglars in the early hours of Friday. The gambling house, situated in the former Spur building, lost an undisclosed amount of cash after the burglar forced open a safe. The building is currently under renovation and a canvas screen has been assembled in front of the building to demarcate the construction area and to protect passers-by from dust and falling objects. Unfortunately, this also obscures a crucial area from public view. The burglars used this opportunity to break open the gambling house. They had ample time to break open the safe, as they were safely out of the view of passing police vehicles, security vehicles and the neighbourhood watch.

Residents of Walvis Bay and the greater Langstrand area woke to a heavy thunderstorm on Sunday morning early. Downpours occurred over the entire Walvis Bay urban area with the highest downpour that occurred over the Narraville suburb. On the picture: the municipality of Walvis Bay pro-actively responded on Sunday morning by pumping away water that formed in large pools in several low-lying areas around Walvis Bay. The town has no storm drainage system and rainwater accumulates in lower lying areas and the conventional pump system, assisted by a tanker truck is the only available solution. Omaruru once was a drug-free town, but now things are changing and the drug trade is steadily on the increase. On Friday, 13 April at around 17:15 the police arrested two suspects with 30 pieces of crack cocaine and one bankie of cannabis. Eliaser Brian Kapunda (33) and Tuna Nendongo Nendongo (42) Kapunde was arrested at a park in front of a Barber shop with 30 pieces of suspected crack cocaine, and one bankie of cannabis valued at N$3 050. After he was arrested, the drug operation team went to a house where he kept his stock. According to Namibian Police's crime investigation coordinator for Erongo region, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu. Upon arriving, they found a further 1.174kg of cannabis, valued at N$11 750 at this location in Ozondje, and arrested Nendongo, who is the house owner. The pair were arrested with the following in their possession: 11 bankies of cannabis, 15 full mandrax tablets, 2 half mandrax tablets and 8 quarter mandrax tablets. Both suspects were due to appear in Omaruru Magistrate Court on Monday.

Walvis Bay Run 4 Animals
Saturday 14 April saw runners doing it for the animals instead of doing the usual Park Run. Yolanda van der Westhuizen arranged a very successful Run-4-Animals to raise much needed funds for the Walvis Bay SPCA and the Feed-a-Paw project in Swakopmund Yolanda was very happy with the outcome as they had 140 entrants joining the event which brought in N$12 000 in cash, 28 bags of dog food, 12 bags of cat food as well as treats. 26 SPCA dogs were taken along for this event, while a lot of runners also came with their own dogs A big thank you to Yolanda and all her organisers for arranging a successful and fun day in aid of the four legged kids.

Taking on the South Atlantic with their home-built yacht
Four adventurers set sail from Walvis Bay yesterday, with their home-built yacht, planning to cross the South Atlantic to Brazil via Saint Helena. Brothers Oloff and Muir de Wet built their aluminum sloop, “Ongemak�, in South Africa, a project which required skill and lots of patience spanning several years. They set sail from Cape Town to Walvis Bay and yesterday with their life partners Ronell and Isolde said farewell to the African mainland and is now heading for Saint Helena. A roll cloud coming over Walvis Bay from the ocean side A roll cloud (Cloud Atlas name volutus) is a low, horizontal, tube-shaped, and relatively rare type of Arcus cloud. They differ from shelf clouds by being completely detached from other cloud features. Roll clouds usually appear to be "rolling" about a horizontal axis. They are a solitary wave called a soliton, which is a wave that has a single crest and moves without changing speed or shape. One of the most famous frequent occurrences is the Morning Glory cloud in Queensland, Australia, which can occur up to four out of ten days in October. One of the main causes of the Morning Glory cloud is the mesoscale circulation associated with sea breezes that develop. However, similar features can be created by downdrafts from thunderstorms and are not exclusively associated with coastal regions. Coastal roll clouds have been seen in many places, including California, the English Channel, Shetland Islands, the North Sea coast, coastal regions of Australia, and Nome, Alaska. Leopard attacks tourist in Gaub pass in the safety of his Overlander A German tourist was seriously injured in an attacked by a leopard in the Gaub River pass early on Thursday morning. The victim, identified as 61-year-old Hardy Specker, was due for surgery at the Welwitschia Private Hospital late yesterday due to the serious nature of the injuries he sustained on his scalp, face and neck. Specker's life partner, Petra Windmeisser (60) explained at 01:00 on Thursday she and Specker was asleep in their camper truck when they heard something at the window. The window was open and Specker decided to close it. The next moment I heard a loud bang against the truck and my husband was screaming. She could see how he was pulled out the window and instinctively she grabbed him by the feet and pulled him back in the truck. Johann Viljoen Has and was and has. An open letter addressed to the Principal of Flamingo Primary School On more than one occasion, has the learners of your school taunted me and other concerned drivers. Your learners have no discipline whatsoever regarding oncoming cars, they run in the streets, no care for oncoming cars, on purpose, play soccer in the middle of the street and refuse to move for oncoming cars. After your learners have been picked up, that street looks like a hurricane went by, it's paper, plastic, bottles lying around everywhere. It's disgusting. After todays' incident, I've had enough, they threw an iron rod over the wall into the street, causing it to bump on a car and in the street onto the street in front of me. I had to swerve out to avoid the iron rod damaging my car. It is shocking beyond believe that there is not ONE teacher to supervise the children waiting for their parents or lifts after school!! Not ONE! Where are you as a principle of the school? This is not only an embarrassment for you and your school, but for the town of Walvis Bay too. If something had to happen like a child being killed by oncoming traffic, charges of negligence or damaging of vehicles, you will be held responsible as the principal of the school. Readers letter Dear Editor, despite the stern warning from the police at the recently held meeting with the car guards on April 10, and also despite the prohibition from Namport and municipality bylaws not allowing car washing activities in public places. There is a certain guy called Jamba, who is persistently coming to waterfront with friends to wash vehicles. He also washes the vehicles without permission of the tourists and on their return from the cruises he charges them lots of money. There is enough evidence to proof the reasons as to why this guy must not be allowed to operate at the waterfront. The following questions need to be answered in this regard. From whom do these guys get the permission to defiantly continue with this car washing activities at the waterfront? Is this not tantamount to aiding, abetting crime/ corruption is being prevented? To all the law-abiding crime and corruption hating citizens of Namibia and Walvis Bay residence in particular, lets join hands, to pull the plug on corruption and crime to make Walvis Bay safe, prosperous and tourism (attraction) destination! A Legend says farewell Rudi Bowe
The Ministry of Education and Culture, and the community of the coastal town of Walvis Bay, said goodbye to a legendary leader with a passion for education. Mr Paul Fisher from Narraville Primary School (NPS), said farewell as Principal and teacher. After twenty four years, time for retirement finally came. His teaching career started in 1981 in South Africa, and came to an end in 2018 in Walvis Bay Namibia. In 1984, his teaching career started in Namibia at De Duine Secondary School in Walvis Bay. He then went to (NPS) in 1987 as a teacher before he was promoted to the position of Principal in this school in 1994. (NPS) recently held a special farewell ceremony in remembrance of their principal. The head girl, Roché Thomas, said that no words will ever be enough to thank Mr Fisher for all he has done for the learners of this school. Thanks were also expressed in what he did and will still do in the community of Narraville. The head girl expressed her gratitude on behalf of the all learners of (NPS) also said: “A legacy of learning and to live an honest and Godfearing life, is some of the things that have imprinted on us by him.” “The learners gave him a brand new brown leather jacket as a token of their appreciation. The Director of National Examination and Assessment Tsumis Garises described Fisher as a leader with a passion for education and that Mr Fisher has done his part of education in the country, and that he has positively contributed to the lives of thousands of children in Namibia. The Deputy Director of Education Marc Jacobs, described him as a multi-talented principal. He was a great leader, not just through the spoken word, but the way he led. Jacobs mentioned that it will be difficult for anyone to fill the shoes of a man that lead by example. The Ministry would like to thank you for your hard work, dedication and perseverance. Fisher said: “I truly hope that my replacement will put the education of the children first, as well as the cooperation of the community, and consere and cultivate the teachers of the school and I wish the next principal pros-perity and success.” His wish is to see that learners who do not excel academically, but practically, be incorporated with the implementation of the new curriculum and that the ministry makes provision for the Namibian
child. Mr Fisher concluded, “I want to thank our Heavenly Father for His sup-
port to keep me safe and carrying me through. I carry deeply rooted and engraved scars inflicted by
the Walvis Bay Education Circuit in Erongo Region of Excellence. I did not compromise the education of learners of Narraville, Kuisebmond and Walvis Bay. I ducked and weaved the vehement onslaughts.” “I am free. My hope is that nepotism and favouritism shall never befall our audacious incubator of teamwork, dedication and respect.
Thank you School Boards, parents, teachers, and communities, Walvis Bay community and the learners for the cooperation bestowed upon me. Be protected against the arrows that are directed to the school. Let dualisation be the fertilizer of a harmonious sphere of Education Culture. God is my Helper and shall also be your Keeper always.”

Football Festival at Kuisebmond Stadium The draw for the 2018 Debmarine Namibia Cup Last 16 Round was held recently with four games at Walvis Bay's Kuisebmond Stadium and four games at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek. All the games will be played on Saturday 21 April. Premierships giants Orlando Pirates will face Eleven Arrows, Blue Waters take on Young Chiefs with, Tura Magic FC play against Swakopmund FC and Black Africa taking on Khuse FC at Kuisebmond Stadium in Walvis Bay. African Stars will play against Dynamos, Once Again FC takes on Civics FC, Khomas Nampol takes on Golden Bees FC and Chief Santos FC will play against UNAM FC at the Sam Nujoma Stadium. The winners will advance to the Quarterfinals set for 28-29 April with the Cup Semifinals on 12-13 May and the Final on 26 May with the venues still to be announced. The overall winners will walk away with N$500 000 while the losing finalist will receives N$250 000 and each losing semifinalist will get N$150 000. All individual awards will be N$95 000. PLAYTIME 8 Aside Cricket Tournament PLAYTIME in association with Cricket Namibia recently hosted a U/15 8 aside cricket tournament. The tournament is hosted annually in Kuisebmond with the motto of promoting cricket in Kuisebmond and the coast at large. The tournament consists of four teams; the RED BULLS, BLUE BULLS, YELLOWS and the ALL BLACKS. Every year there are coaches allocated to teams for the tournament. Playtime is there to make sure that all players get an equal opportunity to play, as the bye laws constitute. Tournament rules to play by: · 5 over's per innings · Bowler may only bowl 1 over · Batsman retire on 20 runs · Batsman may not bat in the top 3 in 2 consecutive games. · Batsman batting in the top 3 may not bowl within the first 3overs of the second innings. From an organisers point of view, it is a good tournament to expose Junior Coaches to, and the player to an atmosphere filled with pressure. It was also good to develop and to have the quantity we have but quality players are also very important and needed and our U/15's got it all. SFC Vikings too Strong for E.R.A The SFC Vikings cruised to a comfortable victory on a windy Saturday by beating Erongo Rugby Academy 47-19 at the SFC in Swakopmund. In the first half, a powerful run by No 8 Desmond Grobler secured the first try of the match for the Vikings. The try was converted by Kyle Wentzel. Minutes later another bollocking run by the forwards from support play saw flanker Perrie Karsten cross the chalk for the second try of the match. Wentzel converted again. The SFC Vikings dominated all the setpieces on the day, resulting in a second try for No8 Desmond Grobler, whom was later named overall man of the match. Wentzel sent another conversion through the uprights. After overpowering the E.R.A forwards at the breakdown, hooker Johan Retief made a break and sent prop Corne Vermeulen over the try line. Wentzel converted. In the second half, a fight back from E.R.A paid off when they scored three tries of their own. Aurelio Plato shock Wanderers On Saturday, Aurelio Plato KUDUS fullback kicked a 50 metre penalty to give Kudus a stunning 26-25 victory against Wanderers in Windhoek. KUDUS were in the lead up until five minutes before the final whistle, before Wanderers scored to take the lead 25-23. Just as it seemed the Wanderers will clinch the gripping match. In the final minute, Kudus were awarded a penalty on the halfway line. Plato, with a brilliant penalty that just dipped over the crossbar to hand Kudus the sensational victory, as he added 16 points with the boot for his team. Fly half Ivo Croza opened the account for KUDUS with a drop goal and lock Grant Nash, went over for a converted try to made the score 10-10 and just before half-
time KUDUS scrum half Percy Nash, went over for a converted try and gave the KUDUS a 17-10 lead at half-time. Plato added two penalties in the second half which gave Kudus the lead. Wanderers striked back with four tries to take the lead 25-23. Aurelio Plato had the last say as KUDUS got a penalty on the halfway line as he stunted Wanderers and their supporters as he snatched the victory for KUDUS at the death of the match. WASP Archery Shoot
The first of many Archery competitions was held on Saturday 7 April 2018 at the Walvis Bay Archery in the School Program club (WASP) at the Jan Wilkens Stadium Sport grounds in Walvis Bay. The entry fee for parents and supporters was a piece of old clothes or tin food in aid of the Janet Martin Charity Foundation and the Immanuel Ruiters School. Mrs Jeanine de Jager from WASP handed all items collected over to Mrs Helena Mouton a representative of the Janet Martin Charity Foundation.
A lot of fresh faces were in action with more than 106 Archers from different schools and organisations, including the 32 archers who were selected to compete from 25 - 30 April at the Africa All Stars Archery competition in Springs South Africa. At 5 o'clock the AAG (Adult Archery Group) ended off the day of shooting, where after
