Motoring Founding President Nujoma humbled by naming of mining vessel in his honour Piquet Jacobs
Value adding to raw mineral resources and innovation in the mining sector were singled out yesterday as the critical factors for Namibia's mining industry to stay competitive and to meet the country's development goals. These statements were made at Walvis Bay respectively by Namibia's Founding President Dr Sam Nujoma and the Minister of Mines and Energy Mr Obeth Kandjoze at the christening ceremony of Debmarine Namibia's newly-built diamond sampling and exploration vessel, the SS Sam Nujoma. The christening ceremony was hosted at Walvis Bay for logistical reasons as Lüderitz, the
vessel's home-base is very remote and many would have had difficulty to attend. It turned out that even in Walvis Bay, there were logistical challenges. The CEO of De Beers Group, Mr Bruce Cleaver could not attend this milestone moment, as extreme foggy conditions made it difficult for his plane to land in Walvis Bay and was then diverted to Eros Airport in

Windhoek. “I remain an ardent believer that one of the critical factors in the achievement of Namibia's national development agenda is through the beneficiations of our mineral resources”, Dr. Nujoma said in his keynote address. There is no content any longer for mining companies to simply invest, extract and export, said Dr. Nujoma. Adding: “we seek to get more value out of our natural resources, both directly and indirectly through shareholding in these mining ventures and greater value addition by processing these raw materials further down the value chain before exporting”. Dr. Nujoma, who at several instances expressed his humble appreciation for the new mining vessel named in his honour, also cautioned that the development of Namibia's youths is critical for national progress. The Founding President applauded Debmarine for purposefully growing Namibians for jobs in the marine diamond sector. Minister Kandjoze in his address said innovation is critical for the mining industry to keep abreast of best practises to optimise production output and to grow financially through cost optimisation. “….there is a consensus that it is true innovation that will drive the next wave of productivity gains and financial growth. If we do not follow the innovation route, our extractive resources will become a curse instead of a blessing”. Minister Kandjoze acknowledged the difficulties the mining sector currently faces. “The Namibian mining industry in particular is going through one of the most intense periods of change we have ever seen. The ability to innovate, to evolve, to adapt and improve is indispensable. Long gone are the days where you can peg a claim and try your luck with pike and shovel”. The acquisition of SS Nujoma by Demarine at a price tag of N$2,3 billion is one of the examples of innovation that would benefit Namibia's marine diamond mining sector. The vessel can operate cost efficient due to latest technology. It also uses a range of unique technologies to sample faster, accommodate larger samples and collect more information per sample run than any other diamond sampling vessel. The vessel also created 130 direct new jobs, mostly filled by Namibians.

“The Mummy” celebrated its worldwide debut in cinemas on Friday (9 June) and can currently also be viewed in cinemas in Namibia. The film was shot on locations in Namibia, London and Surrey with the opening scenes featuring scenes in and around Swakopmund. These scenes doubled for similar scenes in Egypt and Iraq. According to international media reports, “The Mummy” had a production budget of US$125 million. Stars for feature in the film include Hollywood heavyweight Tom Cruise who became a familiar figure in Swakopmund during the production of the movie and also Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis and Courtney B Vance. The production sites included the Rössing Mountain, in the dunes, the Moonlandscape, the Rössing Mountain Airstrip and the Messum Crater. All locations are familiar sites in the Erongo region. Usually film companies opt to use Abu Dhabi and Morocco as a double for desert scenes of Egypt and Iraq. However, since scenes of the blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road was shot in Namibia, the country has become more appealing to future movie productions. According to international media reports, the production's stay in Swakopmund required 650 members of the cast and crew, 215 of whom were sourced locally while the rest were brought in from South Africa and the United Kingdom. Moonlighting Film Production Services in Swakopmund were hired as the local agent to help coordinate the shoot. “The Mummy” brought something unique to the table in the growing Namibian film industry. On Rotten Tomatoes the film received an average rating of 4.3/10. Metacritic gave “The Mummy” a score of 34/100 based on 43 critics. On IMDB the film received a rating of 5.9/10. Florence Haifene, Executive Secretary of the Namibia Film Commission, was not available for comment on the rating of the movie at the time of going to press.

Police clamps down on poachers in Uis and Otjimbingwe Erwin Leuschner
The police in the Erongo region has arrested four people this week on charges of illegal hunting and stock theft. This was confirmed by deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police regional crime investi-gations coordinator for Erongo. According to Iikuyu the first case was reported on Tuesday (13 June) in the small settlement of Uis. Two suspects were arrested early in the morning after they allegedly stole a donkey and slaughtered it without the owner's consent. After they slaughtered the animal they then allegedly hid some of the meat in the field and the rest they kept in their bedroom. The meat was recovered and the value of the stolen animal is estimated at N$1 000. The second case was reported on Wednesday (14 June) on the farm Wilsonfontein in the vicinity of Otjimbingwe. “It is alleged that two suspects riding donkeys with six dogs, armed with a panga, spears and a knife, entered the farm and poached one oryx,� Iikuyu said. The suspects were caught red-handed whilst they were busy slaughtering the oryx. The police recovered the whole carcass. The two suspects, aged 47 and 25 respectively, are set to make their first appearance in the Karibib Magistrates court today (16 June).

Adrian “Boy” Schickerling behind bars again because Sharlien Tjambari of extortion Swakopmund resident Adrian “Boy” Schickerling (52) was arrested by officials of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in Otjiwarongo last week Friday after he was allegedly involved in what appears to be a well organised criminal extortion swindle. He was apprehended at the Otjiwarongo Police station. According to information received by the ACC the scam was perpetrated by individuals who contacted a businessman under the pretext that he was a contractor on a certain list selected to perform construction work for Government. This business-men was then invited to a meeting with a person pretending to be an employee of the Ministry of Works and Transport – this person informed the businessman “that he has to show his appreciation for the gesture of adding him to the list” by paying N$2 000. Shortly after the businessman paid the money, he was approached by two black men and one Caucasian male, in a dark-green Mercedes Benz sedan, and introduced themselves as officials of the Anti-Corruption Commission and Police Officers of the Namibian Police. They “arrested” the businessman on a charge of bribery and took him to the Katutura Police Station. Two of the “police officials” entered the police station, in order to lend credibility to their scam. The businessman and the Caucasian “police officer” remained in the vehicle. The remaining police official in the car then extorted an amount of N$300 000 from the businessman to “drop the charge”. The cash was withdrawn by the businessman's son and handed over. Following an investigation by the ACC, three suspects have been arrested. Adrian Schickerling was one of the three suspects. According to an official from ACC Schickerling appeared in Otjiwarongo Magistrate Court on Monday (12 June) together with his co-accused. Two more suspects are still at large. The case was remanded to 27 July 2017. All three accused remain in custody pending further police investigations. They are charged with contravening Section 29 of the Anti-Corruption Act (Falsely pretending that he/she is an authorized officer or has any of the powers of such an officer under this Act, or under any authorization of the Commission issued under this Act); contravening the Police Act, Act 19 of 1990 section 33 (Any person who impersonates a member [of the Police] or makes any statement or does any act calculated falsely to suggest that he or she is a member); racketeering in terms of the Prevention of Organized Crime Act (some of the accused have similar previous pending cases) and extortion. Schickerling is also involved in other organised crimes of extortion and impersonating a member of the police which took place in Swakopmund early in 2015. He was out on bail of N$10 000 during the time he committed these latest alleged offences. In Swakopmund he is accused of extorting N$200 000 from a businessman. Schickerling and three others were arrested and were all granted bail. According to the ACC the accused persons are neither authorized officers of the Anti-Corruption Commission, nor are they members of the Namibian or any other Police Service for that matter. The ACC suspects that they may have extorted cash from other members of the public and are calling on anybody with more information to contact ACC Investigator Werner Nghashikuao (081 2582387 or (067-302 731) or Chief Investigator Justine Kanyangela (081 127 7486 or 061-435 4000). The Anti-Corruption Commission warns members of the public to avoid getting involved in such scams or to make payments that can compromise them getting drawn into the scam and opening the door to extortion. The identity of any Authorized Officials of the Anti-Corruption Commission can be verified with Mr Nelius Bekker, the Head of Investigations and Prosecution at the AntiCorruption Commission (081 129 9215 or 061-435 4000).

Two Henties Bay residents receive brand new wheelchairs Two Henties Bay residents, 10-year-old Ester Uiras and George de Klerk (69), each received a brand-new wheelchair on Wednesday this week, thanks to a donation made by Empire Fishing Co. Fisheries Minister Bernhard Esau called on other fishing right holders to follow suit and share their profits. “I am overjoyed. I am very happy,” said Rebekka Uiras to namib times. She is the mother of Ester Uiras who was born paralyzed from the hip down and is wheelchair bound. Ester is ten years old. An operation was out of the question as there was possibility that she would be left completely paralyzed. Her spirit is remarkable and smiles a lot. “I like to play with my friends and my brother. And I like to teach my brother how to cook,” the little girl says. “It is not easy raising three children by myself,” Rebekka Uiras continues. Because of her disability Ester cannot attend school, but that doesn't stop her from chasing her dreams. While she wishes to become a lawyer, her mother wants her to go into the media industry. “I read the news to her and teach her,” she says. Since Ester's birth Rebekka Uiras has struggled to find a wheelchair for her daughter. Previously Ester received old, used wheelchairs. Her first new wheelchair was sponsored by Rebekka's boss. But that one is now old and broken as well. The donation was made possible by Bernhard Esau, Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources. During the handover Matti Amukwa, Chairperson of the Confederation of Namibian
Fishing Associations, said he hosted a Christmas lunch for the elderly and disabled in Henties Bay in December 2016. Esau was also present. “During the event I realised that there are some citizens not benefitting from fruits of independence. I thought to myself the disabled should also benefit of the fruits of our fishing resources,” Esau said. He instructed Amukwa to look into helping the disabled and Amukwa, in his capacity as Chairperson, approached Empire Fishing Co. who answered the call and bought two wheelchairs. One beneficiary is Ester Uiras, while the second wheelchair was given to George de Klerk. The 69-year old pensioner suffers from Alzheimer and epilepsy. “Since he had his last epilepsy attack in January he cannot walk anymore. His legs are stiff,” said de Klerk's granddaughter Catherine. They received an old wheelchair which is now broken. During the event Henties Bay mayor Herman Honeb said that this day marks the beginning of trying to address the needs of special needs people living in Henties Bay. “We want to organise an association for people with special needs,” he said. Esau called on other fishing right holding companies to follow suit and share their profits with people of the country. “Let us cultivate a culture of sharing,” he said.

Church of Jesus Christ partners with community leaders to fight poverty Swakopmund traffic official slap on and other social issues Sharlien Tjambari the pulse for dismissable behaviour The Church of Jesus Christ in Swakopmund on Friday evening organiEyebrows are rising over a Swakopmund traffic official who supposedly came off the hook with a mere warning, after she was found guilty in a disciplinary hearing earlier on four counts of assault, one count of bringing the municipality of Swakopmund's name into disrepute, one count of causing damage to private property and poor timekeeping. The charges stem from an incident on 20 December 2016 and several incidents thereafter during which the said traffic official went into angry rages, accusing another woman of a sexual relationship with her husband. The victim who was accused of the sexual relationship was allegedly repeatedly assaulted, a door was kicked in. The victim was thrown with a bunch of keys and she was threatened with further physical harm including murder. Stray bullet hits sleeping woman A 32-year-old woman was transferred to the Katutura State Hospital on Sunday, 4 June, after she was struck by a stray bullet. The bullet was fired from a bar and passed through her shack. The incident was in the early hours of the morning. The victim and her boyfriend were asleep in their ghetto behind Okatope Bar in Kuisebmond when she was struck by the bullet in her lower right arm. She was rushed to the Walvis Bay State Hospital and thereafter transferred to Windhoek for further medical treatment. During the investigation a cartridge was found in the bar area, but no arrests were made. On Wednesday, 7 June, police received a tip-off that the suspect linked to the incident was trying to flee to the north. The tip lead to the arrest of the 31 year old suspect at Oshivelo roadblock. The firearm used was later found in Walvis Bay. The suspect appeared in the Walvis Bay magistrate court yesterday. Many members of the community, be it from academic institutions, the business fraternity, government institutions, civic and religious organisations were invited. The theme of the meeting was “Bringing life to those in need by partnering with community leaders”. The open-house was organised in order to provide guests with the opportunity to better understand how homes, families and the Namibian community at large are strengthened through faith and their family history; how the church's programs for children from pre-primary age, youth, and adults strengthen families and moral behaviour; and how the humanitarian services provided by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints have contributed to the relief of poverty and illnesses in Namibia over the years. The church recognises that education and literacy are the keys to personal growth, building strong families, and making meaningful contributions to society. Among the guests was the Mayor of Swakopmund Councilor Pauline Nashilundo. Councilor Assertha Marsh said her passion lies in working with the community especially the residents of the DRC informal settlement. While addressing guests, the Church's President Mr Johannes Swartbooi, said that the church is willing to meet the Swakopmund municipality halfway, especially during projects such as cleaning campaigns. He continued saying that “we would gladly do this service for you because we believe in helping others. We would do it for free so there would be no need to spend money.” The church wishes to also get involved with the Swakopmund municipality and together come up with projects to help the needy. “I am happy to hear that the Church of Jesus Christ is willing to meet community leaders half-way, because the leaders cannot do it alone. There are people who are bedridden and require our help or people living in shacks who are affected by fires who also need our help. We are happy that the church approached us and is willing to assist the municipality” said Councilor Nashilundo. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) is a world-wide Christian church that has a membership of over 15 million people in many countries in the world, including Namibia.

Indian High Commission on visit of Indian warship to Walvis Bay An Indian navy ship (INS) Tarkash arrived at Walvis Bay yesterday for a diplomatic call until Sunday. The Indian High Commission in Windhoek issued a statement on the visit of the navy ship to Namibia and said it is a continuation of good diplomatic relations between Namibia and India. The statement reads: “INS Tarkash is a part of the Western Fleet of the the Indian Navy, which is based in Mumbai, under the Western Naval Command, and is currently on a two months overseas deployment in the Atlantic Ocean and the Western Indian Ocean. INS Tarkash is a 'Stealth` Frigate commissioned into the Indian Navy on 09 Nov 2012. The ship gets its name from a Sanskrit word meaning “a Quiver” of arrows. Tarkash is truly a “Quiver” of a high density of weapons and sensors manned by its highly motivated crew. It makes her one of the most potent platforms of the Indian Navy. The ship carries cutting-edge weaponry which includes Supersonic Anti-ship missiles, advanced Surface-to-Air missiles, a 100 mm medium range gun, a Close-in Weapon Sys-
tem, Anti-Submarine and Anti-Ship Torpedoes and rocket launchers. The INS Tarkash has a total 30 officers and 250 sailors onboard. The call at port by INS Tarkash at Walvis Bay is a demonstration of India's warm ties with Namibia and its commitment to maritime security in the region and its solidarity with friendly countries. India and Namibia have very close and cordial political and diplomatic relations. The visits of President Dr Hage G Geingob to India in October 2015 for the India Africa Forum Summit meeting, and of President Pranab Mukherjee to Namibia in June 2016 have given a fresh impetus to the bilateral relations. Both countries are continually strengthening their ties in various other fields, including economic, culture, defence, etc. A number of bilateral agreements for co-ope-
ration and exchange exist between the two nations. Trade between India and Namibia is growing steadily. A MoU for defence co-operation between India and Namibia was signed in 2009.

Tutaleni Early Learning Pre Primary & Day Care was established in March 2014. The centre serves 40 children from ages 6 months to 6 years old. On Wednesday Round Table donated 6 tables and 24 chairs to learners which are going to Grade 1 next year. Last year we donated paper/pencils crayons scissors ect. for the kids that went to grade 1 in 2017. Thank you to the Walvis Bay community for their continued support of Round Table which enables us to serve our community.

The ubuntu of development finance
DBN Senior Communication Manager Jerome Mutumba talks about the mutual responsibilities of lending and borrowing In the wake of recent reports of lapses in repayment of debt on small and medium enterprise loans issued with the purpose of enhancing Namibia's development, economic activity and prosperity, DBN Senior Communication Manager Jerome Mutumba has clarified important aspects of mutual responsibility for lending and borrowing, which must be factored into the concept of development finance. Mutumba says that there is a distinction between finance for development and commercial finance. Finance for development will typically be allocated with the goal of supporting and enhancing economic activity, while commercial finance will have the goal of achieving returns for the lender, without the narrower requirement of producing development. Both, however, will have the prerequisite of returns to capital, in order to sustain their operations. In the event of loans which are not repaid, both development and commercial finance will fail. In making the choice between sources of commercial or development finance, the borrower will envisage the same outcome, regardless of the source of finance: a viable enterprise that will be a source of personal growth and income. The choice of lender, on
the other hand, may influence the terms of the loan in favour of the borrower. A development finance institution (DFI) may, for instance, accept a greater degree of risk, offer capacity development services to borrowers and, under exceptional circumstances, offer flexibility on contracted terms of repayment. In order to qualify for a DFI loan, the borrower has to recognise the goals of development finance, and ensure that she or he can fulfill those requirements. The first cut decision of development finance will be a clear indication that the borrower can satisfy the terms of the loan. If not, the borrower will not be able to satisfy development goals, such as employment, development of capital, economic activity and other factors. As a lender, the DFI will have the additional consideration of its own sustainability. It has the
moral and economic obligation to preserve its own capital, as well as collect interest, which will be used to sustain and grow its operational capacity, by providing more loans to a greater number of borrowers. In this way, the agreement between the borrower and the DFI must be mutual, to produce the best possible outcome for both. Mutumba points out that as the benefits of development finance are allocated from a common resource, such as the national coffers, with the broader goals of development benefits that extend beyond the owner and the DFI, the finance is at the heart of an ubuntu in which the benefit extends beyond the two parties to the loan. Both entities have to be aware of the ubuntu. Talking about the successful approach of the Development Bank of Namibia (DBN), Mutumba says the Bank not only
ensures the integrity of its lending through governance, but also through cooperation with borrowers after the amount has been disbursed. Governance surrounding the lending process is exercised through a stringent due diligence process prior to approval of loans, which includes factors such as qualification and skills, and willingness to offer collateral, in addition to the standard elements of business planning and development impact. Mutumba stresses that development finance is a privilege, and that not all applications can succeed, only those that deliver the greatest impact in terms of the Bank's mandate. Although the Bank may receive many good applications it regretfully has to reject some in favour of those that are the best of the best. Due to the quality of assessments of applications for finance, the diligence process will identify areas of risk. In these cases, DBN recommends mitigatory measures to applicants, or rejects the application. Where a project is judged to have remarkable development benefits, the Bank may choose at its own discretion to assist the applicant
with development of the proposal through its Project Preparation Fund. Post-lending, Mutumba says that the Bank maintains relationships with borrowers. In addition to monitoring of repayment, visits can be used to ascertain that the application of capital disbursed by the Bank is used for the purpose for which it is intended. When enterprises do experience difficulty, this is generally, rapidly identified by the Bank, at which stage the Bank will approach the borrower to examine the source of the impairment and try to rectify the situation, rather than proceed to declare the amount a bad debt and recover it through a legal process. The Bank, he says, does not have the intention to immediately recover its capital, rather to strengthen and improve the enterprise to preserve the development impact that was presented in the successful application. Mutumba goes on to say that when the Bank has experienced difficulty with loans, it is often as a result of a lack of administrative skills and capacity. The Bank, he says, has taken steps to rectify this with the implementation

Mutumba concludes that the Bank's track record shows that the partner-
ship between it and its borrowers is sound, and provides developmentally beneficial results. However, he challenges stakeholders to use the Bank's anti-fraud mechanism, if they believe there are irreguarities in transactions.

Lichtblick für einsame Farmer Die Schtorie von Ingrid Kubisch wird in zwei Folgen auf diesen Seiten erscheinen. Folge 2 Der Angriff von der anderen Flanke hatte mehr Erfolg. Unter dem Slogan „Deutsche Frauen nach Südwest“ wurden Frauen zwischen 20 und 35 - also im gebärfähigen Alter angeworben, zwecks Anstellung als Dienstmädchen oder „Stütze“ auf Farmen und in Haushalten der Kolonie. Dienstmädchen waren in der Kolonie sehr gefragt, schon allein, weil das Wort „Dienst“ eine sehr freie Interpretation zulässt. Das störte die Mädels nicht. Sie kamen in Scharen und aus allen sozialen Schichten, um der Enge und allgemeinen Aussichtslosigkeit im tristen Deutschen Reich zu entfliehen. Mit rücksichtsloser Ellenbogenkraft
drängelten sie sich in die drei Häuserblocks lange Reihe und hofften inständig auf ein neues Leben als „Herrin“ auf einer Farm in Südwest. Vordergründig wurde den Frauen eine Arbeitsstelle in der Kolonie versprochen. Die geheime Agenda aber war die Reinhaltung der deutschen Rasse. So geschah es, dass die sogenannten „Weihnachtspäckchen“ nach Südwest kamen. Das Geschenk des Reichs an seine Siedler. Die Schiffsreise dritter Klasse war kein Urlaub, aber die Mädels waren einiges gewöhnt. An Land gesetzt, entweder mit Kran und Korb oder auf den starken Armen liberianischer Kru Boys, schüttelten sie ihre pastellfarbenen langen Röcke aus, zupften Häubchen und Hüte zurecht und blickten gen Osten. Da

sahen sie sie. Wenn Ostwind geherrscht hätte, hätten sie sie auch gerochen – die Farmer und Siedler. Mit von der Sonne gebleichten Haaren, gegerbten Gesichtern, die Körper von Knochenarbeit ausgemergelt, so warteten sie - ausgehungert nach Frau, nach deutscher Frau. Zum Glück kamen die jungen Frauen erst in einem Swakopmunder Hotel unter. Es soll hier keineswegs unterstellt werden, dass sie keinerlei Betreuung hatten und den Schakalen zum Fraße vorgeworfen wurden, das nicht. Es wurde dann auch recht angenehm mit den ganzen Lustbarkeiten, die zum gegenseitigen Kennenlernen angeboten wurden. Das Kennenlernen ging zum Teil recht lebhaft vonstatten, sodass die Hebammen
unter den Frauen nach neun Monaten alle Hände voll Baby hatten. Viele der jungen Frauen reisten ins Inland weiter. Das „Heimathaus“ in Keetmanshoop war ein angesehenes Verkupplungsdomizil und diente auch als Bollwerk gegen die Vermischung mit den „Buren“ des südlichen Nachbarlandes. Die Kolonialverwaltung war emsig am Werk. Also: Die Kolonie wurde wieder gesitteter und die Kinder sprachen wieder deutsch. Die deutsche Frau hatte das Ruder gründlich herumgerissen. Das Händchen, das sich vordem kokett die Locke hinters Ohr streifte, wurde zur kräftigen in die Seite gestemmten Faust. Jetzt gab es gemauerte Häuser mit Gardinen vor den Fenstern, Hühnerställe und Gärten, es wurde gebuttert und gekäst. Es gab Familienleben und Schafkräle. Schluss war's mit dem Lotterleben des einsamen Farmers, Schluss mit dem vergnüglichen Samstagnachmittagbad, wenn die Omakaindo ihren Farmer tüchtig einseifte. Liebe Küstenleser! Drei Klassentreffen liegen bereits hinter mir. Auf der Heja Lodge zwischen Hosea-Kutako-Flugplatz und Windhoek ging es zu unserem 25. Matrikjubiläum 2004 im kleinen Kreis recht jovial zu. Wenn man sich in den entscheidenden Jahren der Kindheit und Pubertät fast jeden Tag gesehen hat, dann prägt einen das Verhältnis zu den alten Klassenmaats, egal, ob man sich danach Jahrzehnte lang aus den Augen verloren hat. Als fünf Jahre später auf der Gästefarm Elisenheim bei Windhoek, die von meinem ehemaligen Klassentschommie Christina We r n e r ( g e b o r e n e Heckmair) und ihrem Mann geleitet wird, wiederum gefeiert wurde, hatten sich schon mehr Klassenmaats eingefunden, in
deren wesentlich älteren Gesichtern man sich selbst spiegelt, und zwar dutzendfach. Zum 35. Schulabschlussjubiläum - wiederum auf Elisenheim hatte sich eine geradezu überwältigende Anzahl an 50-Jährigen zusammengefunden, um einen fröhlich quasselnden, unbändigen Haufen ehemaliger Schüler der Deutschen Höheren Privatschule Windhoek zu bilden. Ich nehme mal an, dass

fahrten wiedererlebt, erste Partys MIT KUSS durchgehechelt, und man fühlt sich für ein Wochenende wieder zusammengehörig. Kein Stinkstiefel dabei, keine Spaßbremse und kein Angeber. Niemand ist mehr an-
unser 40. Matrikjubiläum, das quasi um die Ecke liegt, noch lebhafter sein wird, wenn sporadisch Mails bei mir eintreffen, die da fragen: ,,Na, Susann, wie sieht es mit dem nächsten Treffen 2019 aus? Muss anfangen zu planen!” Ich weiss nicht, was Sie für Erfahrungen mit Klassentreffen hatten, liebe Leser, aber ich habe bisher alle genossen. Graue Schläfen, Doppelkinn und Bierbauch treten in den Hintergrund und geben direkt den Blick auf die kindlichen und jugendlichen Gesichter frei. Hier ein erstes Hörgerät, dort die erste Glatze, aber seltsam, das alles erscheint unwichtig. Dafür ist die alte Vertrautheit wieder da. Es werden Anekdoten ausgetauscht, Klassen-
gewiesen auf ausgedehnte Selbstdarstellung; den eigenen glamourösen Lebenslauf kennt man schließlich zur Genüge. Und ab vierzig sollte man spätestens wissen, dass nicht mehr allzu viel am Leben bzw. an dem, was noch davon übrigbleibt, zu feilen ist. Das Revier ist abgesteckt, die Entscheidungen sind getroffen, die Fehler gemacht. Hier und da kann man vielleicht noch eine kleine Korrektur vornehmen, doch im Großen und Ganzen ist die Sache gelaufen. Wir wissen, dass wir uns mit 50 nicht mehr neu entwerfen können bzw. sollten. Wir haben gelernt, über uns selbst zu lachen (bevor die anderen es tun) und uns zu respektieren. Deshalb sind wir bei diesem Treffen auch alle so verdammt glücklich. Was gibt es denn noch zu verlieren? Und dann ist das Wochenende mit den Ex-Klassenmaats plötzlich vorbei. Umarmungen, Versprechen, ratloses Winken. Es gibt keinen angemessenen Abschied. Wir trotten auseinander, jeder in eine andere Richtung, zurück ins momentane Leben. Ihre Susann Kinghorn, die sich schon aufs nächste Klassen-Rendevouz freut.

Folge 3 1908 fand man Diamanten in Lüderitz. Das trieb die Vermessungstätigkeiten an der Küste von Südwestafrika an. Insbesondere hafennahe Bereiche von Lüderitz und Swakop standen im Vordergrund. 1911 untersuchte das deutsche Forschungsschiff SMS Möwe die Wassertie-
fen vor der Küste nördlich von Swakopmund. Da die Küste absolut keine markanten Bergspitzen aufwies, mussten Landvermesser, unterstützt von einem Vermessungstrupp der “Möwe” und dem Bezirksamt Swakopmund, das mit Maultieren und Kamelen behilflich war, erst einmal Holzbaken entlang der Küste aufstellen und vermessen . Diese Holzbaken ermöglichten die Vermessungsarbeit vom Schiff aus . Beim Vermessungstrupp war Paul Wlotzka wahrscheinlich als Transportunternehmer
beteiligt. Von der Bakensetzung wird in dem Heft “Die Forschungsreise der S.M.S. Möwe im Jahre 1911" auf Seite 27 berichtet . Wie bereits erwähnt, betreute Paul Wlotzka als Fuhrunternehmer eine Expedition der deutschen Kolonialgesellschaft unter der Leitung des Geologen, indem er Vorräte bei dem Baken von Wlotzkabaken deponierte. Ein Aquarell von Hans Gebser: Dër Baken von Wlotzkabaken. Der 1891 geborene und in Hamburg aufgewachsene Hans Gebser erbaute 1942 für seine Familie ein Haus in Wlotzkasbaken. Jeder Balken, jede Latte wurde mühevoll mit der Hand zurechtgesägt, und die Türen und Tore dieses Häuschens sind in der Verschlusstechnik eine derartige Meisterleistung, dass es dort bis heute keinen Einbruch gab. Das Foto wurde freundlicherweise von Hanspeter Mühlbach, dem Enkel Hans Gebsers, zur Verfügung gestellt.

Countdown to the 3rd Annual Husab Marathon begins Swakopmund, 16 June 2017 – Swakop Uranium's Annual Husab Marathon will take place on Saturday, 5 August 2017. The event was well attended in 2016 and attracted close to 500 participants and this year the event promises to be bigger and better. The Husab Marathon whose main sponsor is the Swakop Uranium Foundation is an Annual International Event on the sporting calendar. The event serves as both a Sports day and a Community Fun Day where families can enjoy a day close to the beautiful Namib Naukluft Park. There will be food for sale and entertainment available to participants. There will also be cash prizes to be won by the winners of the races as well as Lucky Draw prizes. Entertainment such as jumping castles and face painting will be available to all children for free. Applications to take part in the event will be received online and manually from Monday 19 June, 2017 until Friday 28 July, 2017 which is the closing date for all applications. Registration (collection of race material) will take place on Friday, 4 August 2017 from 15h00 – 20h00 at the Vineta Sport Field on Welwitschia Road, Swakopmund. With a little magic on his side for Jorn it was clobbering time. 4. Poena Olivier vs Ricardo von Stein 1-3. Ricardo must have been chuffed with this great win. 5. Gendev FC “warns” Magic in Debmarine Namibia Cup Subtitled by Media Officer Gendev Football Club have set their sights on reaching the quarterfinals when they face Tura Magic in the Last 16 of the 2017 Debmarine Namibia Cup at the Kuisebmond Stadium in Walvis Bay on Saturday in one of the four matches at the venue. Gendev FC are writing a remarkable history in Namibia football, having at the first time of asking, won the Erongo Preliminary Round of the Debmarine Namibia Cup earlier this year to reach the Last 32 and were lucky enough to get a bye into the Last 16 after the withdrawal of their opponent. Gendev FC administrator Luzaan Rossouw says they are proud of the club's achievement thus far and are preparing to cause an upset on Saturday when they take on cup favourites Tura Magic at 11h00 on Saturday. “From the company CEO down all the employees, we are very proud of what the team has achieved in the shortest possible time. It has happened so fast and everyone is excited about it. Reaching the last 16 of such a major competition in the country is by no means easy and we have been very lucky so far and we intend to use that luck together with determination to carry us through the past. Magic is strong, but we don’t fear them”, Rossouw states. Rossouw adds that the Walvis Bay-based club is funded by the Gendev Fishing Group and the all players are employees at the company. “The players have risen above the demands of being workers and play the game they love as well. They have taken up the challenge so well and the sky is the limit for this young club”, says Rossouw. Tura Magic and Gendev FC is the second game of Saturday at Walvis Bay as Touch & Go and Rundu Chiefs kickoff at 09h00.Try Again and Eleven Arrows will battle it out at 13h00 and at 15h00 UNAM FC and Mighty Gunners will go head to head at the Kuisebmond Stadium.
Football power struggle has coastal supporters worried The power struggle in football had coastal supporters worried. The question that came to me is why? The birdies whistled that the football governing body declared the NPL interim-management committee. On what grounds? The NFA executive then disbanded the NPL interim-management committee and replaced it with an NFA ad hoc committee that is chaired by a NFA executive member with the dissolved NPL interim-committee members as his subordinates. I do believe that this happened as the NPL interimcommittee solicit sponsors for the NPL and an audit company to audit the books. This has now resulted in a number of the traditional powerhouses African Stars, Black Africa, Blue Waters, Orlando Pirates, Chief Santos, Citizens and NPL champions Tigers all calling for the dissolution of the troubled league. It come under my attention that the entities that are willing to sponsor the NPL do not want to talk the NPL ad hoc committee but only to the NPL interimcommittee members or else, the new NPL committee. The sponsors are refusing to speak to them
claiming they already sponsored the money to NPL interim-committee. The clubs all called for the dissolution of the NPL committee, therefore the need for an interim committee. All the clubs in the country should ask for the dissolution of the NFA Management. A birdie whistled that the regional clubs will not do so, as they will not be the favourite ones any more. I ask the birdies why they are the favourite ones? The regional clubs are the majority and they are the ones that vote them in power and by voting for them they do get something in return. Last year the under 17 national football team won the Cosafa Cub. This year they cannot go and defend the cup. The reason: there is no money. Where is the money? The team qualified last year so the NFA ought to have obtained sponsors last year already. The fact that they just say there is no money is not good enough.
