Largest ever consignment of Petcoke discharged at Walvis Bay Port Eileen van der Schyff

The Bulk Carrier GLOBAL BRAVE (IMO: 9434606) sailing under the flag of Panama discharged the largest recorded consignment of Petroleum Coke (Petcoke) destined for the Republic of Zambia at the Port of Walvis Bay last week. The consignment of 42, 000 tonnes of Petcoke, received from the Port of Houston in the United States of America (USA) was discharged over a period of three days before the bulk carrier departed for its next destination, Lüderitz on 8 December. The Petcoke will be transported in trucks to the Republic of Zambia where it will be used in a limestone factory. Executive of Commercial Services at the Namibian Ports Authority (NamPort), Elias Mwenyo said this significant milestone speaks directly to the relentless work of marketing, the Port Authority's capabilities, and infrastructure to handle such volumes. The first recorded consignment of Petcoke at the Walvis Bay Port was in February of 2019. “Since this trial run in 2019. this consignment of Petcoke at the Port of Walvis Bay, it has been proven to be a suitable and capable nodule in handling this commodity,” Mwenyo said and explained Petroleum coke is a material relatively low in cost and high in heat value and carbon content with good chemical stability, making it an efficient and cost-effective fuel for producing metal, brick, and related products.

Mwenyo said the Walvis Bay Bulk Terminal is handling the cargo on behalf of the Walvis Bay Cargo Terminal. The next consignment is expected to be offloaded at the Port of Walvis Bay in April next year.

The campaign kicked off with a briefing by the Swakopmund Police Station Commander Ruben Shapumba at the Mondesa Police Station and proceeded with community engagements which started in Mondesa, DRC and other locations in Swakopmund. During the campaign, the Mayor of Swakopmund Dina Namubes said the safety of residents and visitors remains a crucial priority on Council's agenda and, “it is indeed disheartening to have observed the high prevalence of alcohol and drug abuse amongst our young people. Because of this, the majority of Swakopmund citizens have been affected by drug and alcohol abuse, as well as other criminal activities that are associated to it.” Last week Swakopmund council launched the Swakopmund Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse Engagement with the aim to create awareness and seek solutions and intensified law enforcement activities in the battle against alcohol and drug misuse.
