Tyre recycling facility for Swakopmund

Swakopmund might get a tyre recycling plant, where old and used tyres will be shredded, grinded, granulated and powderised. Town Council in principle availed a one hectare piece of land for this new facility and at the same time decided against the establishment of a Pyrolysis plant, where old tyres would have been reprocessed into fuel gas.
All over the world tyres, be they small or big, are a huge nuisance. Once they have fulfilled their purpose the disposal of them is extremely difficult. This fact was also reiterated by the Swakopmund municipality which wishes to rid the landfill to the northeast of town of this type of garbage. “Tyres are not desired at landfill sites due to their large volumes, which quickly consume valuable space,” it states in the agenda of the recent meeting. But instead of reprocessing old tyres into fuel gas, town council has instead opted to avail a piece of land to the company AEGO Recycling Solutions, which intends to recycle tyres. The process entails the shredding and powderising of the tyres, where the rubber will be separated from the steel. Thereafter the shredded tyres can be used in children's playgrounds as a form of “rubber mulch.” “The mulch acts as a padded surface for kids in different areas of a playground,” it states. This mulch is advantageous, because it is not affected by weather, provides traction for the kids and also reduces injuries due to the padding it offers. The tyre shreds can also be used at landfill sites as a backfill, operational liners or material for everyday cover. “Shredders can also be used as gravel replacement on roads as it is believed to be less costly than gravel,” it states. After considering the application Town Council in principle approved to lease a one hectare piece of land for a period of nine years and eleven months for the establishment of a tyre recycling plant. Shaningwa - low income groups should get houses at N$500 000 and below Sharlien Tjambari During the 2016 High Level Consultative Retreat held in Swakopmund the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Sofia Shaningwa raised her concern on how a large section of the Namibian population still lives in poverty and informal settlements and does not have access to affordable housing. “While I acknowledge the effort that we have made and continue to make in the area of land and housing delivery, it is a known fact that much more is needed to arrest the backlog in houses and access to affordable serviced urban land. This requires us to revisit our approach and intervention mechanisms with a view to accelerate the development, supply and affordability of housing products and serviced land in the country” said Shaningwa. Shaningwa urged the council to change the ways in which they manage and allocate the land under their jurisdiction and custody. “I have noticed with great concern, from investigations carried by the Ministry in some local authorities, that land is sold or allocated without following prescribed procedures. Shaningwa said she would like to know the reasons why land delivery is slow so that the ministry can critically analyse those predicaments and do away with bureaucracy and deliver land as fast as possible. “It is not only corruption when one misuses finances, but corruption could be orchestrated in decisions that are made. This literally leads to what I would term as organised chaos and consequently slow pace of service delivery.” Shaningwa further said that the council should consider and give priority to the most needy when they are allocating opportunities related to land and housing. “I discourage favouritism, nepotism, greed and self-enrichment, and the allocation of more or large pieces of land to a few individuals or institutions, this is a great concern especially when we on the other hand continue to tell the have-nots and the poor that there is no land available to allocate to them.” Shiningwa further stressed that the leaders should control the housing prizes and look at how much a person takes home before allocating houses to the poor. She said the people should be able to take something home to their children and not just put all their income in houses while the children are hungry at home. “Houses for the low income groups should start at N$500 000 and below not N$500 000 and up.”
Police clampdown on illegal butchery Erwin Leuschner
After two months of investigations the police in Walvis Bay this week clamped down on an illegal butchery operation and arrested three people who were found in the possession of five stolen cattle carcasses and eight stolen sheep carcasses. The estimated total value of the meat is N$41 000. The incident was confirmed by Deputy Commissioner Ottilie Kashuupulwa, Regional Crime Coordinator of the Erongo Region. According to her the police received information about two months ago about people supplying an illegal butchery operation in a garage in the Industrial Area. “We received a tipoff this week and did an inspection on Wednesday at about 8:15,” she said. During the inspection the police recovered the cattle and sheep carcasses, the value of the stolen cattle is estimated at N$35 000, while the stolen sheep is estimated at N$6 000. According
to information received these animals were stolen stock originating from Khorixas. When the police arrived they arrested a driver (28) and a passenger (29) of a vehicle, which were allegedly supplying the illegal butchery. Both individuals were charged for being in the possession of suspected stolen property. The buyer and alleged operator of the butchery (47) was charged for receiving of stolen property. According to Kashuupulwa this is not the first time that the driver and passenger have come under the police radar, as they are alleged “to always bring carcasses to the operation.” “We also confiscated ear tags of animals, which were slaughtered there before. But it seems that the operation was also closed down by the municipal health department, because the meat was apparently not fit for human consumption,” Kashuupulwa added.

MMMC washes dirty laundry in public Liesl Losper Metal, Mining, Maritime & Construction Union (MMMC) launched a scathing attack on its labour partner Elgin Brown Hamer Namibia yesterday - accusing this marine and ship repair company of mismanagement, mistreatment of workers by foreigners, unfair labour practices and financial mismanagement. Workers affiliated to MMMC staged a peaceful demonstration at the company’s floating dockyard where a petition was handed to management. The heads of several managers were called, foreigners must pack and leave and the company should beef up its human resources and financial departments, the petition demands. “We want all managers that are victimising our people to go. They must resign with immediate effect,” the petition reads. Names of Namibian members were mentioned in the petition as well as foreigners. A demand was also made for an audit of all of EBHN’s contracts, accusing at least one senior member of the company dishing out a transport contract to her boyfriend at a local transport company. Workers demanded a meeting with the Board of Directors to inform the directors of the “true facts on the ground”. The petition also set out the management structure of EBH including photographs of each person and their nationality. Four of the seven members they indicated were foreigners. MMMC published and disseminated the petition under the banner of the Namibia National Labour Organisation (Nanlo) and not the MMMC banner.

Swakop resident busted for drugs at Nonidas smallholdings Floris Steenkamp
A Swakopmund man fell victim to a scammer recently, moments after he has been arrested by the Namibian Police at the Nonidas smallholdings for drug possession. Giliam Swiegers was accosted by the police at 16:00 on 2 April at the Okakamba smallholding at Nonidas where 12 pieces of crack cocaine, mandrax tablets and three cannabis seeds were found in his posses-sion. Shortly after Swiegers' arrest he received a phone call by a male person claiming to be employed by namib times. The person explained he is a reporter of the newspaper and at a cash payment he would prevent the event of his [Swiegers'] drug arrest publicised. Relatives of Swiegers complained at namib times management. Regarding the matter as very high in importance namib times after a brief inquiry informed the relatives of Swiegers the claim he was phoned by any staff member of the newspaper was baseless. Swiegers had to concede he was victim to a scammer who used his arrest as a platform to extort money from him. The newspaper offers its full cooperation with any future investigation into the matter. That would include compulsory lie detector tests to all employees and also selected former employees if the need arises. Members of the public are warned never to react on phone calls. In almost all instances scammers are using cell phone conversations to lure their victims, as they are at risk of being identified if meeting their intended victims in person. Whether you are called by people claiming to be police officers who inform you there is a criminal case against you, but that it could be made to disappear if you pay a cash sum or whether it is people claiming to be corrupt reporter - don't be fooled. Insist to meet the person, insist to meet the police officers at the police station, as scammers have an endless supply of ideas how to try and part you with your hard earned cash.

Community leaders meet to discuss Strict guidelines for car harambee prosperity plan targets Erwin Leuschner guards The Swakopmund municipality will introduce guidelines to enforce proper control over car guards in town. This decision was taken by Town Council after a recent thorough investigation with regard to the activities, management and operations was conducted. Some of the results of the investigation didn't surprise, while others were quite shocking.
The Swakopmund Council Chambers was fully packed yesterday Sharlien Tjambari The Municipality of Swakopmund is hosting the 2016 High Level consultative retreat with regional governors, chairpersons of regional councils, mayors of muni-cipalities and town councils, chairpersons of village councils, chief regional officers and chief executive officers of all Namibian local authorities to plan and discuss the target set out in the Harambee Prosperity Plan. The retreat started yesterday and ends today. “We are gathered here to revisit our mandate, take stock of the plans that are in place, to execute our mandate, analyse the effectiveness of our current plans and strategies, and if need be, to advise new and more effective ones,” said the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Sofia Shaningwa, in her keynote address. Shaningwa said she expects all the leaders of the community to familiarise themselves and to internalise the Harambee Prosperity Plan and as a matter of urgency, work out a plan of action in order to deliver on the targets set for the Ministry. In terms of the Prosperity Plan Shaningwa said the Ministry is expected to deliver the following during the Harambee period: 20 000 houses; 26 000 residential plots; and 50 000 rural toilets to be made available over a four year period (2016/17 to 2019/2020); and the elimination of the bucket toilet system by the end of 2017. One of the issues Shaningwa touched on was the budget execution, “our ability to garner and secure resources is dependent on our execution
rate and if we are found to be failing in utilising resources according to laid down procedures within a given financial year, we stand the risk that our future budget allocations will be reduced, which will impact negatively on our ability to deliver services at the required level,” she said. In respect of the development budget Shaningwa warned all governors that if their regions are not performing the funds allocated to those regions will be given to other regions that are performing. “It is through the capital budget that we are expected to provide basic infrastructure and services that are central to improving the living standard of our people. Failure to use these funds thus means a deprivation of these basic services to our people, and this must be avoided. The remedy to this situation is proper and timely planning and implementation of capital projects as well as transfer of funds and coordination between the Ministry, regional councils and local authorities,” Shaningwa emphasised.
Reading newspapers, while they should watch over parked cars, complaints of alcohol abuse and even an increase in break-ins into vehicles – these were only some of the results identified after the municipal Traffic Services department investigated the pros and cons of having car guards at different places in town. The topic regarding the services of car guards in Swakopmund was discussed at the recent Town Council meeting after an application was received from a new company wishing to conduct the service at ten “new” streets. The company would like to introduce car guards at Moses //Garoeb Street, Lüderitz Street, Leutwein Street, Anton Lubowski Avenue, Theo Ben Gurirab Avenue, Swakopmund Street, the Municipal Head Office Parking, Smith Street, Cottage Avenue and at the old traffic offices. According to the Agenda three car guard businesses have been registered since 2009. The duties of the car guards are to look after parked vehicles in a demarcated parking area. “This service is delivered either on expectation of a reward or out of goodwill,” it states in the agenda. But it has been established that the streets and parking areas are not equally distributed amongst these companies, which causes misunderstandings and problems with regard to their operations. Another issue includes the fact that some of the owners of the three companies do not reside in Swakopmund and thus do not monitor the daily efficiency or effectiveness of the car guards. Therefore an investigation was launched. After this it was established that there are seven arguments in favour of having car guards in town, while ten more arguments were actually against this service. The pros include the fact that car guards are tasked with guarding entire streets against any criminal activities, they provide general safety towards the public, indicate to drivers where they can park, ensure the safety of vehicles, provide tourist information, create employment and they should also work closely with Nampol. In the arguments against car guards it states that there actually is an increase in break-ins into vehicles. There also is no-cooperation with Nampol members and some car guards are even involved in criminal activities. Other car guards leave an area without informing the owner if enough money has been gained. To many car guards their exact role was not clear and there was also no proper training offered. All of the above have a bad reflection on the tourist sector and the image of the municipality of Swakopmund. “In view of the above it is clear that the operations of current car guards are not properly managed,” it states in the agenda. During the Town Council meeting it was therefore decided, that new guidelines will be introduced and once they are in place, the existing businesses can reapply. Contrary to the traditional annual pattern where no passenger liners call at the port of Walvis Bay during winter times, there is a change this year with the passenger vessel Logos Hope expected alongside on 15 July. Passenger liners traditionally only make calls to Walvis Bay during the late spring and summer months. Also on 24 April the Queen Victoria calls at Walvis Bay and will be followed by three calls by MSC Sinfonia respectively on 27 April, 3 May and 8 May.

Blaze destroys five shacks in Jabulani Erwin Leuschner
Five shacks were decimated by a fire on Wednesday this week in Swakopmund in Jabulani. According to Adri Goosen, Swakopmund's Fire Chief, the blaze started in a shack around 14:00. “The women told us they went to sleep and when they woke up, everything was burning,” he said. The exact cause of the fire is therefore unknown. Miraculously nobody was hurt. Many residents scrambled to take out their belongings and bring them to safety, before they could eventually only stand by and see their homes be destroyed. When the fire brigade arrived at the scene about three shacks were burning. “But the strong southwester wind pushed the fire to adjacent shacks. In total five shacks were destroyed, before we finally got the fire under control and prevented it to spread even further,” Goosen said. In the centre of the structures stood a brick building, which also showed considerable damage due to the heat, with some of the walls showing cracks.

Old furniture business moves to new shop Erwin Leuschner
The furniture business, Nictus Furnishers in Swakopmund, has moved to bigger and modern premises. After spending more than N$4 million on renovations the new showroom had its grand opening last week. “We are the oldest furniture business in its niche in Namibia,” Nictus Furnishers Managing Director, Hannes Retief, said during the opening. The business celebrated the milestone with clients and members of the public and gave away lots of prizes. According to Retief, Nictus Furnishers is celebrating its 71st birthday this year, having been established in 1945. “We are a growing business and have taken the decision to increase our footprint throughout the country,” he said. Currently Nictus Furnishers has five branches throughout Namibia: Windhoek, Tsumeb, Walvis Bay, Swakopmund and Ongwediva. “We are very optimistic about the economy and that is why we are investing in our branches,” he said. While Nictus in Swakopmund enjoyed a considerable upgrade, Nictus is currently busy with “big plans in Walvis Bay” and a new mega store in Windhoek, which will open its doors soon. Swakopmund mayor Pauline Nashilundo congratulated and also thanked Nictus Furnishers for its faith in continuing to invest in the coastal town. “The increase in Nictus's footprint in the Erongo Region is a step in the right direction,” she said.

Maintenance worker becomes honorary Minister He is 66 years old, wears a blue overall and does general maintenance around some properties in Libertina Amathila Avenue in Swakopmund. Gideon Itewa is always friendly and makes a point of waving and saying "Good morning chief" every single day. He is extremely determined and wants to lift education in Erongo - so much so, that Katrina Hanse-Himarwa, Minister of Education, officially baptized him as an honorary Minister of Education. "I want the schools in Erongo to be the best in Namibia," Itewa said to namib times, while he was going around his normal business, sweeping a pavement. He never misses a workday. Why is he so determined about education and the performance of learners though? "I always wanted to be a teacher, but I didn't qualify," he explains. It was in 2010, when Samuel Nuuyoma was still the Governor of the Erongo Region, that Itewa decided to take a stance. "There were such big differences in the performance of schools in Erongo. Some did exceptionally well, while others were right down there. I wanted to bring all of the schools up, right to the top," he said. He then approached the Governor, all education inspectors and various other stakeholders and came up with a brilliant idea: To create an education fund for Erongo. Dispute at service station ends with vandalism A three day long standoff between about 300 taxi drivers in Swakopmund and the owner of the Riteway Service Station close to the Truckport ended yesterday afternoon. The taxi drivers finally left the premises, but not after vandalizing almost all signboards. The altercation started on Friday evening - even the Task Force was called in to monitor the situation and render assistance. Necessity Wellness Profession, a Swakopmund community outreach program, hosted a suicide prevention manual as well as a first aid training manual on 12-13 April at the Tamariskia Community Hall in Swakopmund. The training aims to inform the community about suicide risks, prevention and what individuals can do to help those who have suicidal thoughts. The Coordinator of Necessity Wellness Profession, Penina Haimbondi, said last
year she attended the first aid suicide prevention training, which was presented
by social workers. The aim of which was to train the community's first responders
and to equip them with the necessary skills to handle suicidal people, or people,
who have committed suicide. As the first responder, Penina took it as her duty and responsibility to convey the message and share the information with the community at large. Penina says this is the first ever training she is conducting and she chose to work with Learners Representative Councils (LRC) from different schools in Swakopmund, because adults seem to have more information that they fail to put into practice and at some point “they might be afraid to get more information.” According to Penina children are the builders of the new generation and if they are empowered with the right information “they might do better than us.” Nikki Meiring, a Clinical Psychologist, described suicide as a very prominent problem in the community.

Because of depression people also tend to lose their appetite or they sometimes overeat, while sleeping patterns can also be disturbed, as they sleep either too little or too much. From Meiring's point of view last year was the year where most people committed suicide in Swakopmund. “I believe that
thing is wrong, they need to seek help and treatment as soon as possible. When you have a problem, try to find somebody that you trust and share your problems with. Do not keep it to yourself because it is something that is like a snowball effect, that becomes bigger and bigger until you can't control it and you lose contact with reality and you do not worry about your family members, your job or anything,” she said. Penina is planning to host more suicide prevention training and urges all stakeholders, employers and community members to participate and show more interest in these types of training, in order to help their workers, family members and friends, who are having a difficult time and might even have suicidal thoughts.

More parking bays in Swakop CBD The sidewalk in front of the Hotel “Bundu n See” in the centre of town will soon be transformed into more parking bays. A few years ago it was a popular seating area

The Swakopmund City Centre will get more parking bays, albeit it being only a few. The leased pavement area below the Hotel “Bundu n See” in Hendrick Witbooi Road has to be transformed into new parking bays, the Town Council decided at its last meeting. According to the agenda the Hotel “Bundu n See” has been leasing the pavement area with prime location measuring 51.66 square meters since 1. July 2013. In September 2015 the municipal finance services informed the property section that it intended to disconnect the services and transfer them to the owner. The hotel has not been in operation for quite a few years. In response to this, Namib Estates, who represents the owner of the building, indicated that it intends to continue leasing the pavement area. To consider this request the traffic section of the municipality was asked to comment. In the letter dated 2 December 2015 the Manager: Traffic Services, Melvin Cloete, surprisingly advised against this lease. “Parking is limited in the CBD and this area endangers and obstructs the traffic when vehicles leave the parking bays in front of Edgar's and adjacent buildings,” he argued. This argument was instrumental in the decision taken by Council: “The lease agreement between Council and Hotel Bundu n See is cancelled with immediate effect.” Furthermore it was decided that should the lessee not be traced the owner must restore the area in order for the works division to create additional parking.

The coastal Autism community celebrated World Autism Day on 2April in Swakopmund in the popular Bits 'n Pizza of Lee and Cindy Robert, who were so kind to host friends and parents of the local Autism Community. The restaurant was beautifully decorated with blue balloons, blue candles and even the staff wore blue shirts as blue is the colour of Autism Awareness. A donation barometer has been placed at the restaurant, which stands, after the first week, at N$ 700. “Since this is a great combined effort of both the public, Bits 'n Pizza and Autism Namibia, we are appealing to the public to support this great fundraiser. Furthermore, information on Autism is also available at the pizzeria. Donations and money generated by this and other fundraisers like autism awareness badge sales are utilised to train people how to handle individuals on the Autism spectrum, equipment, literature as well as creating continued awareness on Autism,” Ludwig Haller the organiser and owner of Peter's Antiques said. The coastal Autism Namibia branch would like to thank various local schools for buying nearly 1 000 Autism Awareness badges,
namely Private School Swakopmund, Namib Primary School, Dolphin Elementary School and Stepping Stones – a special need preschool. Ludwig said they have also made various Autism informative films available to Namib Primary School and Private School Swakopmund, who will be showing these during the month of April. Collect a Can supported by the Municipality Liesl Losper
The Walvis Bay Multipurpose Centre's after School Collect a Can Club project was awarded a grand through the Environmental Fund of the Municipality. The purpose of the grant is to enable the Centre to purchase materials and items for collecting cans after school. The deputy Mayor, Cllr Hilka Erastus did the handover of the items to the beneficiaries. The items purchased are to the value of N$10 348.54 as well as other 'in kind' support. This project re-educate the after school youth learners to recover beverage cans, reducing litter an landfill space, and turning this waste into a valuable resource. “In this process we will not only create a pleasant clean Walvis Bay but we also encourage the youth to put their time to better use. We are very gratefull to the Municipality for granting us this money to buy the goods. Be assured that with this we get educated children to look better after our environment” said Adelheid Tsuses, the manager of the group. The collected cans will be sold to Scrap Metal for money to sustain the project.

On Saturday 9 April One Heart launched their first black and white photography exhibition on large-scale canvas prints. It was a great day with the beach in the background, good coffee, champagne, chocolate, classical jazz playing, and a warm, peaceful atmosphere that complemented the beautiful artistic photography, with a good response from people that came to the exhibition. One Heart is a group of creative friends coming together on a monthly basis to put together this exciting exhibition. Each person brings something unique to this project, which also allows them to develop their skills. Term 1 School Activities Since the beginning of the academic year, our school was actively busy with a variety of activities. The athletics held in February was won by the Scheppmann's. A few of our athletes were selected to represent the school at Regionals. Well done to all of them, you did the school proud. Bianca Manuel, Johannes Kanyangela, Beaugene Kastoor and Gaironeeza Maclobo will represent the school at the upcoming National Athletics which is scheduled to take place in Swakopmund, 22/23 April. In March we celebrated Independence Day and learners were dressed in their different cultural attires to display the diversity at our school. On 2 April 2016, we had our FetĂŠ, which was a fun filled day of selling delicious food and playing a variety of games. Well done Grade 8 and 10 for winning the prize, best stall of the day.

Selfies entlarven Narzissten - Teil 2 Die heutige SelfieManie ist nicht ungefährlich. Die Gefahren stecken oft dort, wo wir sie nicht vermuten. Deshalb an der Stelle ein paar unbequeme Wahrheiten über Selfies, die Sie zumindest im Hinterkopf haben sollten... Selfies dienen - im Gegensatz zu Urlaubsund Erinnerungsfotos nicht der Dokumentation des Augenblicks. Stattdessen sind sie dazu gedacht, anderen zu zeigen, wo oder mit wem man gerade unterwegs ist immer verbunden mit der Hoffnung, dafür Likes und Anerkennung einzuheimsen. In einem gewissen Rahmen ist das völlig okay. Nimmt es aber überhand, kann nicht nur eine veritable Sucht nach externer Bestätigung daraus werden. Das eigene Selbstwertgefühl wird auch abhängig von Likes und Kommentaren - oft von Menschen, die einem eigentlich egal sein sollten. Was viele nicht im Blick haben: Nicht nur das einzelne Selfie zählt, sondern vor allem die Summe der Selbstporträts - beispielsweise in einem Profil auf Instagram. In Summe ergeben die Bilder einen Gesamteindruck der Selbstdarstellung: Wie ausgeprägt ist dieser Drang? Wie und mit
wem lichtet sich die Person ab? Das alles kann sich auch negativ auf den eigenen Ruf auswirken, zum Beispiel wenn so ein Image entsteht, das gar nicht beabsichtigt war. Dann ist da noch das Phänomen vom negativen Selbstbild. Wer kennt das nicht: Beim Blick in den Spiegel sind sie mit sich (einigermaßen) zufrieden, auf Fotos aber finden Sie sich regelmäßig schlecht getroffen oder hässlich. Das Kuriosum kann es bei Selfies genauso geben. Zwar werden die Bilder dann selten gepostet, die psychologische Wirkung aber bleibt: Die Betroffenen schießen immer wieder Bilder von sich, sehen sich, sind unzufrieden, löschen die Bilder wieder. In Summe aber entsteht ein selektiv wahrgenommenes negatives Selbstbild. Dabei sollte man sich klarmachen: Gerade die Weitwinkel-Kamera des Smartphones verzerrt die Wirklichkeit, ebenso der Aufnahmewinkel (was auch Selfie-Sticks nicht ändern). Selfies, nicht anders als Urlaubsbilder auf Facebook & Co., laden zum Vergleich ein. Wir sehen das Leben der anderen in unserer Timeline und denken uns: Deren Leben ist viel aufregender als meins! noch mehr Neidgefühle hervorruft – ein klassischer Teufelskreis entsteht, der auch noch die Beziehung nachhaltig belastet. Zugegeben, das sind Extreme. Sie können das Resultat extremer Selfie-Manie sein, müssen es aber nicht. Allerdings sollten einem die Folgen bewusst sein und erste Anzeichen dafür zumindest skeptisch machen. Im vergangenen Jahr meldete unser Lebemann mit kolportierten 45 Millionen US-Dollar (das sind in etwa N$ 675 Millionen!!!) Privatinsolvenz an. Vergleichen wir das mal mit einer Dame
eine Geldsammelaktion lawinenartigen Ausmaßes, denn die Freunde der besagten Dame halfen ihr dabei, und gemeinsam schafften sie es, so viele Münzen zu sammeln, dass ein Auto zweiter Hand gekauft werden konnte. Ich habe einen beachtlichen Respekt vor jemandem, der den Pfennig noch ehren kann. In den Augen der meisten Menschen ist diese Frau aus Pretoria im Vergleich zu dem Rapper aus den USA weder berühmt noch erfolgreich. Für mich ist sie meine 50 Cent-Heldin, die eigentlich den Ruhm verdient, der leider einem Kerl auf dem Kontinenten da oben im hohen Nordwesten zufällt, der Millionen verprasst hat. Rossmund Golf Club News We can definitely not complain about the weather and it is just picture perfect here at Rossmund. The course is looking good despite the resident springboks who are doing their best to mess up the fairways but as always the team is trying to keep on top of it. Handicaps: Players are reminded of the change in the handicap system that took place on 1 April. Wednesday Competitions are on an all-time high at the moment, with some excellent fields of players. Thanks everyone for the support and also to the Clubhouse Kitchen for coming on board with their weekly meals that appear to be going down quite well. Six April was no exception and there were some great scores posted - if you had not made 40 points you were not even in the mix. Sponsored by Advertising Display/Gerhard Byleveld who despite not being able to make it himself sent in a great team consisting of Louis, Gert and Jacques. Eighteen hole winners: 1st Fritz Coetzee 43pts (70 gross), 2nd Kevin Wentzel 41pts (68 gross). The 9 hole prize went to Troffie van der Colff with an excellent 20pts over the back nine. Matchplay Tournament at a recent Committee Meeting - it was decided that an Entry Fee would be introduced for the 2016 Medal Competition - the fee is being introduced to encourage members to actually play their matches instead of letting matches be decided by means of walkovers. All funds collected will be utilised towards the prizes. Fees are N$100 per team for doubles and N$50 per person for singles. Please pay this at the Proshop as soon as possible or before 26 April, after which the draw will take place and games will commence in May. A small field of golfers had a great afternoon in some superb weather. Despite the fact that there were no two clubs a count out was necessary to decide the winners: Michael/Fanie 67pts c/o over Johan/Marlon. 23/24 April Rossmund GC will play host to the 2016 Namibian Open to be played over 54 holes for "A" & "B" Divisions and 36 holes "C" Division. The Entry List has been posted in the Pro Shop. Social golfers should please check in with the clubhouse for possible tee-off times. Most of you will have noticed that Marlon is back - which is great news for Rossmund as we now have our own resident PRO. Walvis Bay Golf Club Big Scores at the Fitment Centre Day Another large group of golfers took to the field in the Walvis Bay Fitment Centre's sponsored day last weekend. A total of 42 players enjoyed more good weather and high scores were the order of the day.

This was probably because the better ball format had a little twist in the tail in that hole #5 was a multiplier and not just a better ball score. And lo and behold, there were a good few that had the dreaded black out on number 5. The winners on the day and winning the count out on 53 points were Gordon Damster and Eugene Venter, while Piet van Niekerk and Herman Neethling had to settle for the second spot. There was a count out involved for third place as well and that was won by Willie van Zyl and Kevin Wentzel on 50 points, Kevin now tasting the fruits of all his good work. They won the count out from Willie Els (again in the prizes) and Gert Olivier Jnr. Young Willie will most certainly get a new handicap soon. Bertie Coetzee and Peet Poggenpoel won the fifth prize on a good 46 points. Making the most of their green fees and getting real value for money were Potch Alchin and Jerry Hartogh. The records clerk doing the scoring for the day did not give the score so all embarrassment is saved. Closest to the pin and at least playing one good shot was Koot Potgieter, who also recorded a 2 club. Other two clubs were recorded by Jerry, Gert Jnr, Percy, Hannes, Bertie, Piet and Johnny G. The jackpot was not won on the day. This was the 5th year that Walvis Bay Fitment Centre was
sponsoring and from reports received they will be back again next year. “Dankie Piet vir die ondersteuning, dit word waardeer.” This coming weekend is the Koot Potgieter Quantity Surveyors day and is also a better ball with some differences. Both scores to count on the par 5's and on the par 3's it is a multiplier. Not sure if one score is to count on the par 4's but this will be disclosed on the day. Namibia succumb to Afghanistan Kudus en Walvisbaai speel When Namibia ended the second day of its four-day ICC Intercontinental Cup match at Greater Noida Sports Complex ground on 19 for 2, still 143 behind Afghanistan, the result was a foregone conclusion bar a miracle. There wasn't one, and Namibia was bowled out for 126 in its second innings, to go down by an innings and 36 runs on Tuesday.

Afghanistan, which had responded to Namibia's first-innings total of 172 with 334 after Mohammad Shahzad scored 139 in 245 balls, took the 20 points on offer to climb to third spot on the eight-team table, behind Ireland and the Netherlands. Namibia remained on 20 points, one off the bottom with UAE propping up the table. The third day started with Pikky Ya France, the opener, and Gerhard Erasmus carrying Namibia's hopes of at least making Afghanistan bat again. They did their bit for nine overs in the morning, before Zahir Khan, the 17-year-old bowler, sent Erasmus back lbw for 35. That ended the 57-run stand and left Namibia at 66 for 3, from which end was just over an hour away. Ya France kept one end up, but at the other, Zahir and Dawlat Zadran wreaked havoc. JP Kotze, the only other batsman to reach double figures, was bowled by Zahir, playing only his second first-class match, for a 17-ball 18, and the bowler followed it up with the scalps of Sarel Burger and Gerrie Snyman, before Dawlat returned to account for Ya France and Nicolaas Scholtz. Ya France batted 91 balls for his 40, showing the kind of application Namibia would have expected from the rest of its top-order batsmen as well. Mohammad Nabi, who had led the way with the ball in Namibia's first innings to return 5 for 25 and had taken the two wickets to fall on the second evening, ended with 2 for 37 for the innings, while Zahir had 5 for 31 from eight overs and Dawlat 3 for 7 from just 4.3 overs. Die vrae wat in die Premier-liga gevra word is egter veeleisend en as jy nie diepte het nie gaan jy sukkel, soos nou die geval is. Net soos die ondersteuners is die Bestuur en Afrigtingspan net so gefrustreerd oor die neerlae en daar word hard agter die skerms gewerk om die klub mededingend te hou. Verblywend vir die klub bly egter die groot getal toeskouers wat elke wedstryd kom bywoon en veral nuwe gesigte wat bly opdaag, getuig dat die gemeenskap belangstel in die vordering van die klub. Vooraanstaande mense
in die gemeenskap kom wys gereeld gesig en een persoon wat in die verlede 'n lang pad met Kudus g e s t a p h e t , m n r Tu n i n o H a s k e l l , s e teenwoordigheid Saterdag kon nie misgekyk word nie. Dis die bywoning van sulke mense wat die bestuur, wat jaar na jaar onder geweldige kritiek en beledigings deurloop, laat aanhou om die klub te dien en om jong manne te motiveer om sport te beoefen. Die spelers sal tot die besef moet kom dat hulle as rolmodelle in die dorp beskou word en dat hulle die klub en gemeenskap met trots moet verteenwoordig. Behalwe vir die ernstige tekort aan diepte is die tweede grootste uitdaging wat die klub in die gesig staar om dit finansieel op die been te hou sonder enige hulp vanaf die NRU of enige hoofborg. Die bestuur van verlede jaar het vanaf verlede naweek hand kom bysit en die hek oorgeneem en borg ook elke naweek die Kiosk sodat alle wins na die klub kan gaan. Behalwe vir die bestuur van verlede jaar het Graham Swartz hom as spanbestuurder beskikbaar gestel terwyl Abraham Farmer en Lionel Muller by die klub se afrigtingspan betrokke is. Enige persoon kan 'n sommetjie maak wat dit sal kos om 50 spelers twee keer 'n maand Windhoek of Rehoboth toe te vat op die klub se onkoste. Daarom word vertrou dat die enkeles wat nog gereeld snedige opmerkings by die hek kom maak oor die skamele N$20 wat hulle by die hek moet betaal, die klub se situasie sal insien. Die klub bly egter dankbaar vir die lojale ondersteuning en is vol vertroue dat 'n ommekeer binnekort gaan plaasvind.
