The Ministry of Works and Transport confirmed yesterday that an investigation is ongoing to determine the origin of an oil spill in the Dolphin Park area. A resident of Afrodite Beach on Thursday detected the spill and it resulted in the Namport activating its oil spill response plan, assisted by the Directorate of Maritime Affairs, personnel of the Municipality of Walvis Bay, the Nambian Navy and the ships agent Sturrock Woker. The heavy fuel oil spill made landfall sometime on Wednesday or early Thursday morning. Floating oil booms, oil absorbing sheets and the dispersal of bio-Zorb (an oil absorbent, biodegradable substance) brought the situation under control. Teams of personnel also worked on the shore to clear the heavy fuel oil spill. In a media release yesterday, the Minister of Works and Transport John Mutorwa described the situation as under control. He assured the public the situation is monitored closely and
should another spill be detected all the necessary assets and personnel will be redeployed. The Minister also confirmed divers were deployed on Saturday to try and trace the origin of the spill. They were unsuccessful and it was further determined no ships at anchor in the bay are leaking heavy fuel oil or for that matter any other substances like hydraulic fluids or diesel. It was indicated thought that an investigation into the possible source of the spill is ongoing.

Another elderly man takes his life An elderly Swakopmund man was found dead in his residence at Ho-Lo Flats in the town's Anton Lubowski Street on Friday, 9 March at about 07:45. It is suspected Mr. Michael Geringer Schmidt (76) committed suicide, as a handgun was found next to his body. He had a gunshot wound to the rib case on the left hand side of his body. It appears he went to lie down on his bed before shooting himself. According to Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, Namibian Police's crime investigations coordinator for Erongo region, the deceased was staying alone. Neighbours said he suffered depression and was reclusive.
According to Iikuyu, the neighbours allegedly saw the deceased garage's door open on Thursday, 8 March between 18:30-20:30. At the time they didn't suspect anything. On Friday, 9 March at about 07:15 they saw the garage door was still open and they notified the Namibian Police. The police found Schmidt dead in his home. The deceased's next-of-kin are yet to be traced. It is believed they either reside in South Africa or Germany. This is the third suicide in Swakopmund in a very short period. (See report below)
Man that has been missing for eleven days found dead in his ghetto On 1 March at around 13:18 Simeon Ndewiika (27) was found dead in his ghetto at house number 7592, new DRC in Swakopmund. He committed suicide by hanging. According to Namibian Police's crime investigations coordinator in Erongo, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, the Ndewiika was last seen alive on 25 February. The ghetto was locked from the inside and there was a foul smell emanating from the house.
The Police forced open the door of the ghetto and found Ndewiika's hanging from a rope tied to the roof structure. His body was in an advance stage of decomposition. A suicide note was found.

Shack Dwellers Federation praised by First Lady for its commitment to mass housing Sharlien Tjambari
On Saturday the First Lady of the Republic of Namibia, Madame Monica Geingos, inaugurated and handed over houses to members of the Shack Dwellers Federation in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. Even though these new homeowners had already moved into their houses, the handover was a token of the latest achievement to bring houses to the Namibian masses. A total of 36 houses were officially handed over to the owners in Swakopmund's MondesaExtension 8 and 100 in Tutaleni in Walvis Bay. The Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia is a savings network organised into 747 groups with over 23 000 members countrywide. During the ceremony the Shack Dwellers Federation's Facilitator in Erongo, Johanna Nembungu said over N$25 million were saved by the members and the money was used to construct more than 4 800 houses. The members received land in 1999 from the Swakopmund Municipality and negotiated with the municipality to service the land themselves. That was to reduce the costs. According to Nembungu, the 36 houses handed over on Saturday were completed in March 2017, after two months of construction activities. Nembungu further said the houses cost N$45 000 [excluding land]. After negotiations with the Swakopmund Municipality, the value of each plot was set at N$2 316. The members who received the houses will be paying 5% interest rate per annum for pre-agreed periods of eleven, fifteen or twenty years. "This year we will construct 68 houses in Narraville, 60 houses i n H e n t i e s B a y, Omaruru and Usakos.
Karibib and Arandis are the only towns where we have not build houses yet. The newly appointed Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Peya Mushelenga, at the ceremony said he admires the members of the Shack Dwellers Federation for focusing
their minds and their energy on addressing the causes and inequality at a time when the nation is faced with acute housing shortage. Also the socioeconomic disparities that accompanies housing shortages. "What we are celebrating here today
gives hope for our people to own a home. This is a moment when the dreams of fellow Namibians who are in need of a decent shelter over their heads are being turned into reality", said Mushelenga. Mushelenga extended a word of appreciation
to the Swakopmund Municipality, FNB, the Pupkewitz Foundation, NeoPaint and Standard Bank for their tremendous contribution toward this venture. Mushelenga and Geingos both thanked the Swakopmund Municipality for availing the erven to the Fede-
ration. Mushelenga said to date, the Government's support amounts to N$37.6 million. Under the current financial year, there is a provision for an amount of N$7 million to assist the Federation to enable its members to build affordable
houses for themselves through initiatives such as these. The support will continue in the future and the amount will be increased to N$10 million in the next financial year.

Demonstration at Dunes Mall Instructors & Students of the Namibia RCFAI & Kickboxing Academy held a success full demonstration at Dunes Mall in Walvis Bay to raise awareness in Self-Defense, Kickboxing and anti-bullying.
The demonstration was to inform the shoppers of the mall of the following life skills: Control, confidence, respect, focus, concentration, discipline and leadership. Pro-Ed Academy won Plate final The U15 sevens rugby team of Pro-Ed in Swakopmund participated in the Capricorn Group Sevens Rugby Tournament, hosted by Windhoek Gymnasium, the past weekend. Two Bronze medals for Phillip Seidler 1:57:10.00. Phillip won the bronze medal as an international swimmer. On 4 March, Phillip Seidler showed his skills, and competing again against his international opponents in the men's 5km event. The Hungarian's Daniel Szekelyi once again topped the medal podium with a time of 56:11.70, Peter Galicz
second in a time of 1:57:01.00 and Namibian Phillip Seidler in the third place in a time of 57:19.34. A contingent of international visitors in the men's event with Hungarian's duo Daniel Szekelyi and Peter Galicz along with Namibian Phillip Seidler and Chad Michau, representing Nether-
lands, added some international flair to SA National Open Water Championships. In the women's event the multi worldchamp medalist, Ana Marcela da Cunha from Brazil, and her training partner, Germany's Sarah Boslett competed in the women's 5km and 10km event. Phillip made Namibia
proud in open water swimming as he returned home with 2 bronze medals. He wants to put Namibia on the map at the World Cup for open water swimming and to the next level by competing in some open water swimming events in Europe to gain experience and get more international exposure.

Phillip Seidler the local Swakopmunder and 5 times Jetty Mile winner competed at the SA National Open Water Swim Championships 2018 with South African's top talented swimmers and some international stars that showed off their skills during the SA National Open Water Swimming (OWS) Championship at Marina Martinique in Jeffrey's Bay on 3 and 4 March. Phillip Seidler competed on 3 March in the 10km event, which was only his second 10km event, after qualifying at his maiden race at the EC
