Arandis-shooter applies for bail State represented by same advocate who put Thomas Florin behind bars for life Sharlien Tjambari and Floris Steenkamp The alleged Arandis-shooter, Ernst Lichtenstrasser (58), is applying for bail. Lichtenstrasser faces two murder counts after the Director of the Namibia Institute of Mining and Technology (NiMT), Mr Eckhart Mueller (72), and his Deputy, Heimo Hellwig (60), were gunned down in cold blood as they arrived for work at the Institute at Arandis early on the morning of 15 April this year. Representing the State in Lichtenstrasser's bail application is Advocate Antonia Verhoef, who is also Namibia's Deputy Prosecutor-General. Advocate Verhoef counts among the best State legal practitioners in the country. She represented the State in the late nineties in the prosecution of Thomas Florin who killed and dismembered his wife at their residence in the then Brückenstrasse of Swakopmund.
The State opposes bail to Lichtenstrasser. “If allowed bail, the accused might temper with evidence and police investigations and giving bail might not be in the interest of the public”, Verhoef argued before magistrate Conchita Olivier. Lichtenstrasser is represented by legal practitioner Trevor Brockerhoff. The bail hearing is set to continue today.

Eileen van der Schyff A source close to the operations of SA Express said this week he is confident delayed or cancelled flights between Johannesburg and Walvis Bay is over. A shortage of airplanes the past few weeks resulted in frustrating flight delays and cancellations. “SA Express had no choice but operate with a reduced schedule as several planes were in for repairs. Available SA Express planes had to fill in and help all flying routes in and around South Africa. This caused flights from Johannesburg to Walvis Bay delayed and even cancelled at some stages”, it was explained. Meanwhile, flight delays also plague Namibia's national air carrier, Air Namibia, which currently battles the perfect storm of a cash crunch and grounded planes.

Poor service delivery in the public sector is the main contributor to corruption. It creates opportunities for members of the public to engage in corrupt activities, collaborating with public officials in the process. This was said recently by the Deputy Director of the AntiCorruption Commission of Namibia, Advocate Erna van der Merwe, who addressed the media in Swakopmund during the 5th ACC Annual Media Briefing. Briefing the media once a year on the status of the fight against corruption in all the Regions of Namibia is one of the ACC's educational tools to sensitise Namibians on the importance to fight corruption at all levels of society. The ACC regularly hosts corruption prevention workshops, education days and updates the public through the media on breakthroughs and arrests of people suspected of corruption. With regard to the Erongo Region, the Chief Investigator of the ACC in the Region, Walter Kurz explained there are 79 cases active on the system. Of this a total of 30 are in the course of investigation, 17 are in court, six are new cases and 26 were thrown out by the courts. It was also understood that there is a significant number of the above cases which dates back as far as 2012. Kurz further explained in 2018/19 a total of 13 new cases were reported which the ACC deemed necessary to investigate.

Logan Pretorius and accomplices slapped with hefty fines Floris Steenkamp Walvis Bay residents Logan Pretorius, Sandra Riobo, Curven Vries and Ashley January were slapped with fines totalling N$52 000 after their conviction on three counts of kidnapping and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The four were found guilty of the kidnapping and assault of three boys in 2014 whom they accused of having harmed Pretorius' dogs. They locked the children in Pretorius' Meersig home's garage and there tortured them for hours. For kidnapping they were each fined N$8 000 and for the assault conviction a further N$5 000 each.
Members of the Arandis community, led by the Mayor of the Town Clr Risto Kapenda, staged a peaceful demonstration in front of the Swakopmund magistrate’s court yesterday, demanding the State don’t grant bail to the alleged NiMT-shooter, Ernst Lichtenstrasser. A petition was handed to Advocate Antonia Verhoef by Clr Kapenda in this regard (pictured left). Advocate Verhoef, who is also Namibia’s Deputy Prosecutor-General at the outset of the bail application hearing informed court that bail will be opposed. Lichtenstrasser is accused of shooting dead NiMT Director Eckhart Mueller and his Deputy, Heimo Hellwig, in cold blood on the morning of 15 April this year. The killings took place as Mueller and Hellwig arrived for work at the NiMT headquarters at Arandis.

We need to step up our efforts to preserve the Walvis Bay lagoon Staff Reporter The community and municipality of Walvis Bay need to take an urgent look at the Walvis Bay lagoon if the town don't want to see this world renowned tourist attraction to survive for future generations. That includes the lagoon's iconic birdlife which draws thousands of visitors each year. Walks along the lagoon reveal very worrisome sights. The municipality's semi-purified effluent overflows into the lagoon at several points, but for many weeks the effluent water was a black, smelly substance. In recent days the overflowing water again returned to its smelly state, despite earlier assurance by the municipality that upgrade work to the semi-purified effluent plant was completed and that the smelly water was only a temporary hick-up. The smelly water is not good for Walvis Bay's tourism image and it is certainly unacceptable that semi-purified effluent of this low standard overflows into the lagoon. Walks also reveal pollution, as a lot of plastics, tins, bottles, carton boxes and other litter left behind by visitors to the lagoon. At the lagoon's southern side regular discoveries are made of drug paraphernalia which proves many people look up the remote part of the lagoon at night to smoke cannabis and use other types of drugs. Walvis Bay for many years had a tourist information structure at what we commonly known as Lover's Hill. It had to be dismantled as vandals desecrated it. There were new arrangements made for the construction of a new information centre closer to the Flamingo Cottages, but to date the municipality of Walvis Bay dragged feet on the issue. The lagoon, salt works and the Bird Paradise at the entrance to Walvis Bay form Southern Africa's single most important coastal wetland for migratory birds. Up to 150 000 transient avian visitors stopping by annually, including massive flocks of both lesser and greater Flamingos. The wetland in Walvis Bay is a vital link in a global network of nature reserves. Should Walvis Bay lagoon be lost to these birds there are only a few other locations where they can move to. The result would be substantial mortality of displaced birds. Walvis Bay wetland is a vital refuge for flamingos during the dry spells of the year. They breed inland on pans created by summer rains. In the dry winter season the pans dry up and the birds fly to coastal wetlands, Walvis Bay is the single most important location. At the Bird Paradise, the situation is also deteriorating. The area is littered as people dump their household waste among the reeds and the remoteness also makes the area dangerous as criminals frequent the area looking for unsuspecting tourists to burgle their vehicles. Some stakeholders in the tourism industry say unless action is taken now, the lagoon would lose its tourism-appeal in as little as 10 years from now. “Let's take care and respect our God given privileges that can be taken away so easily�, remarked one stakeholder when asked about the decaying state of affairs at the lagoon.

It was a day of miracles for several people on Tuesday, when everyone sustained only slight injuries when a truck plunged off a railway bridge between Usakos and Karibib, right into the way of an oncoming train. The train subsequently slammed into the wreck of the truck.
Violent crimes against women and children continue despite awareness raising efforts by various groups and individuals. Perpetrators take advantage of the cover of dark-ness and secluded areas.
The driver of a Kia truck lost control of the vehicle after it encountered steering problems. The truck swerved into the oncoming lane and was hit by an Iveco truck. The collision was on a section of the road where the railway line crosses under the road by means of a railroad bridge. The sheer force of the collision sent the Iveco

According to police reports a fight ensued when the thug attempted to undress the resisting woman which resulted in the woman sustaining an injury in her face. The woman dropped her phone during the assault and the thug allegedly picked it up and ran away. Cases of attempted rape, theft and common assault were opened.

Walvis Bay soon her new home
Catamaran Charters acquired a catamaran in South Africa and is currently fitting new engines to the vessel in Saldanha Bay before setting sail for Walvis Bay to her new home port. Catamaran Charters' current fleet in Walvis Bay consists of two catamarans, Silverwind and Silversand. A third catamaran, Silvermoon, was recently sold to Mola Mola Safaris Namibia which subsequently renamed it Sonvis. The catamaran currently refitted at Saldanha Bay will again bring Catamaran Charters' fleet to three vessels. She will be christened Silverskye.

Fish for vulnerable community members Rudi Bowe
Walvis Bay fishing companies Omaru Fishing and Seaworks as part of their corporate social responsibility donated fish to numerous vulnerable community groups. A total of 6 648 boxes of pilchards and 100 x 5kg boxes of frozen horse mackerel to 558 vulnerable members of society that includes elderly people, vulnerable children and youth as well as people with disabilities. The beneficiaries are from the Kuisebmond old-age home, Topnaar elders, Leprosy Mashare project, Katutura old- age home, Ombili soup kitchen, Hepata Home, Happy Educare and Mondesa youth. Omaru Fishing's Chief Executive Officer Ingrith Kasper said “it is our duty to support the communities where we come from as a company and we will continue supporting the government's initiatives in terms of food security'. The shareholding of Omaru Fishing consist of Aukheikas Fishing, Aonin Fishing Holdings and Rundu Fishing Holdings with shareholders stakeholders spread all over the communities of the Erongo, Kavango East and West, Oshana, Khomas, Otjozondjupa, Omaheke regions. Topnaar community Secretary Hendrik Khurisab said on behalf of the community that they are happy about this donation and that it is a blessing for the community. “Old people can now also eat fish. It is rare for them to afford fish and other things. It is a good thing that the company has considered especially the elderly. It is our hope that this
will not end here, and that other companies will emulate this example,” Khurisab added.

Ellen Pakkies Coastal Tour Rudi Bowe
A mother physically and emotionally abused by her drug addicted son over many years on a fateful day killed him. Residents of the coast will soon hear first-hand the dread and devastation drug abuse bring to families. The South African anti-drug activist Ellen Pakkies is coming to Namibia and coastal audiences will have the opportunity to meet with Pakkies during her Coastal Tour that takes place between 1 and 4 July. The Ellen Pakkies Coastal Tour is pre-
sented in collaboration with the Jubilee Ministries and the Coastal O ff e n d e r s D r u g ' s Awareness Campaign (CODAC). Ellen Pakkies' life was devastated by her son's chronic drug abuse and the abuse she suffered subsequently as a mother. Physically and mentally abused by her
drug addicted son, Pakkies on a day killed him. She was spared prison and convicted to community service. It was during those many hours of community service that Pakkies decided to spend the rest of her life a motivational speaker and anti-drug activist in order to try and prevent
others from going through the suffering and pain she had to. Pakkies will visit Walvis Bay Private High School, de Duine Secondary School as well as to fuel transporter XCCS in the harbour town on 1 July, the first day of the tour. That evening a gospel song evening at
the Narraville Community Hall will conclude that first day. Attendance is free, but attendees who wish to do so can donate towards Pakkies' expenses. On Tuesday, 2 July, Pakkies will visit Namib High School and Swakopmund Secondary School. That same day she pays a visit to Namport and then in the evening it is back to Swakopmund for an evening with the community at the Swakopmund ESK Church. On Wednesday (3 July), Pakkies visits Duinesig Combined School at Walvis Bay, Kuisebmond Secondary School and that evening a prayer dinner is hosted at the St.
South African motivational speaker and anti-drug activist Ellen Pakkies John's AME Church (N$150 p.p.). On 4 July it is back to Swakopmund where Pakkies visits Westside High School and Coastal High School.
The coastal tour concludes with a visit to Manica and then Pakkies departs for Karibib where the next day (5 July) she visits Karibib Private School.

All 12 corner stations worked tremendously hard to collect as much donations as time would allow them to and for that, we thank them all. At 08:00 the sponsoring companies left the corners leaving all donations collected with the Winter Knights at their station. Portugal Day celebrated

Portugal day is a national holiday celebrated by the Portuguese nation every year on June 10. The official designation is “Day of Portugal, Camoes and the Portuguese communities” effectively remembering the great poet Camoes and all Portuguese people living abroad. For more than 10 million people this is an unique opportunity to display their heritage, ethnic pride and a history of more than 800 years as a nation. Although well integrated in the Namibian society, the Portuguese living here are very proud of their roots, culture and traditions. Once a year, they get together to enjoy traditional cuisine, music, dance and, at the same time, teaching the young generations about their heritage. On Saturday,8 June, the Portuguese community in Namibia celebrated PORTUGAL DAY. This year the celebrations took place in Walvis Bay. Dr Fernando Araujo, the Portuguese ambassador in Namibia, lead the official celebrations bringing together dignities, invited guests and the community in general. After dinner the “festa” started to sound of South Africa singer “GINA” who created an atmosphere enjoyed by all.

Bankers Association of Namibia warns of latest scam “The Bankers Association of Namibia (BAN) wishes to warn the public of the latest scam where fraudsters use a new technique to scam clients out of their money. In the scam fraudsters call clients pretending to be bank staff and target cellphone banking, iBank and eWallet users specifically”, says Sarel van Zyl, Chairperson of BAN. Fraudsters are known to send a bogus SMS stating that the client received a complimentary E-ticket, with a number stated, and a message that the E-Ticket can be used any day. Note that banks do not issue E-Tickets. The
purpose of the SMS is to coax the client to call the SMS sender's number. The client will then be taken to their usual bank process, where the client will “unknowingly” EasyWallet or eWallet money to the fraudsters. Alternatively, custo-

Bright future for Namibian Hockey The Bank Windhoek National Indoor Hockey League hosted three exhibition matches over the weekend at the Windhoek Show Grounds in Windhoek. The exhibition matches comprised the best Bank Windhoek National Indoor Hockey League male players from the Khomas and Erongo Regions. A first of its kind, the aim of the exhibition was to showcase Namibian hockey level and its development. The players took the matches seriously and they entertained the crowd with top class hockey skill and tricks to the appreciation of the spectators. The Khomas All Stars and Erongo Regionals Men's Indoor Hockey teams faced each other in the first exhibition match of the day. The Khomas All Stars, made up of players from the National team, started the match on a high note and inflicted a 5:1 defeat on the Erongo side. The second match, between Khomas All Stars and Khomas Futures, had the spectators on their feet due to its high paced play. The thrilling match ended in a 4:3 win for Khomas All Stars who looked pleased to have heard the final whistle. Khomas Futures, made up of upcoming hockey stars, went on to win their last game of the day as they swept aside the Erongo Region team in a 5:1 defeat. “Although the coastal team lost all their fixtures, the end result shows that there is improvement of hockey at the coast. We are proud of them,” said Namibia Hockey Union's (NHU) President, Marc Nel. Nel added that the NHU intends to roll out the exhibition matches at every end of the season and grow the game in terms of regional participation which will also include a women's league. “Congratulations to the NHU for putting up yet another exciting initiative. The standard of hockey has improved tremendously and we are proud to have been a part of the incredible journey of this sport in Namibia,” said Bank Windhoek's Head of Corporate Affairs, Hayley Allen. At the end of the exhibition tournament, spectators gave a standing ovation to all the hockey players for putting in great performances during the exhibition encounters. Next on the hockey calendar is the much anticipated Bank Windhoek National Outdoor Hockey League, scheduled to kick off in early July.

Desert Clash 3 On 25 May the Namibian Sports Martial Arts held their third annual National Championships, Desert Clash 3 at Atlantis Sport Club in Walvis Bay.
With 140 participants in competed in 64 divisions with the youngest competitor being 5 and the oldest 54 from three clubs currently affiliated under NASMA to the international body, ISKA. The three clubs that attended were Walvis Bay Sport Martial Arts, Windhoek Sport Martial Arts and Talon Fight Club, also from Windhoek. As per the previous years, the event was hosted at Atlantis Sport Club who offered their facilities at no cost for the development of the sport. During the day there was a large supporter's contingent with parents, family and friends rooting for their favourite fighters. The day started with the very exciting
divisions with the juniors, aged from 5 to 10 years old. As always, this created a huge buzz in the hall with everybody cheering on the young up and coming champions of the future. It beckons to note that generally the parents of these brave young warriors are more nervous and excited than the fighters themselves. The highlights of the day were the senior fighters with some upsets recorded by students fighting above their divisions and teaching the seniors a thing or two. This was mostly apparent in the Tag Team event where the winners of the Junior Ladies division agreed to put on an exhibition match against the Senior Ladies. Low and behold, the juniors, did teach the ladies a lesson or two, winning in the event. At, for the first time at Desert Clash a high kicking competition were held. This does not only go according to the height of the actual board kicked, but rather the height of the board kicked above the head of the participant. This ensures that the actual kicking height is measured and
with this ensured a very interesting battle with some of the shorter contestants kicking up a storm with gold medals. We would like to thank the commitment of all the Students for their hard work to ensure that the standards of the competition are held highly. These are internationally recognised standards and all students who achieved medals have qualified and will shortly receive their invitations to attend the ISKA World Championships Qualifiers in Stellenbosch on 28 and 29 September 2019, called Destiny. This event is the 6th biggest event on the international circuit and also one of the Classics on the professional circuit globally. Nine teams participated in the inaugural soccer tournament held as part of the World Oceans Day celebrations at the Kuisebmond sport field in Walvis Bay this past weekend. The organisers said that the soccer tournament will be an annual event and will be part of the celebrations. The knock-out tournament was won by a combined team of Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources and Namibia Nature Foundation as they beat UNAM Sam Nujoma Campus in Henties Bay 1-0.

SKW breaks CFC's momentum Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW) 1 defeated the reigning Bank Windhoek Fistball League champions, Cohen Fistball Club (CFC), in a tightly contested third round final hosted at the Swakopmund Fistball Club (SFC) over the weekend. The result brought CFC 1's 13 months dominance to a screeching halt. SKW 1's win reduced the champions' lead at the top of the log standings to a mere two points between the two rivals. A total of eight teams, who were divided into two groups of four per group, competed for top spots during the group stages. CFC 1 and 3, SKW 2 and Deutscher Turn und Sportverein (DTS), faced each other in Group A, while SKW 1, CFC 2 and hosts SFC 1 and 2 met in Group B. CFC 1 crushed all of their opponents in Group A and finished top of the group. SKW 2 secured the second spot after they defeated DTS and CFC 3, who finished third. DTS ended fourth in the group and remained rooted at the bottom of Group A. In Group B, SKW 1 beat all three of their opponents. CFC 2, who ranked third on the table before the weekend's tournament, failed to win any of its matches and finished bottom of the group. Backed up by home turf advantage, SFC 1 recorded winning results against CFC 2 and SFC 1, which saw it finish second in the group and secure a place in the semi-finals for the first time this season. In the first semi-final, CFC 1 beat SFC 2 2:0, while SKW 1 also beat its counterpart SKW 2, 2:0 in the second semi-final match. SKW 2 beat SFC 1 in the match for third place playoffs. CFC 2 defeated DTS for the fifth place as DTS eventually settled for the sixth spot. CFC 3 and SFC 2 battled it out in the seventh spot playoffs, which CFC 3 eventually won 3:2. Rivals SKW 1 and CFC 1 faced each other in the finals once again. From the first whistle, CFC 1 started off the stronger team and led for long stretches during the match. Towards the end of the set, SKW 1 came back stronger and turned the set in their favour.
CFC 1 changed their tactics in the second set from defence to that of attack, but this did not yield positive results as SKW 1 remained stubborn throughout the set. In the third set, CFC 1 put in all it had and was rewarded with a win in the end. Motivated by the third set display, CFC 1 played some good fistball in the fourth set and nullified SKW 1's lead with a 14:12 score. However, CFC 1's rush of adrenaline was short lived as SKW 1 remained clinical in the decisive and final set. SKW 1 beat CFC 1 3:2, their first defeat in 13 months. SFC 2's Perry Doberentz and Florian Mosich walked away as Players of The Day. Meanwhile, the men's National team has started training in preparations for the upcoming World Championships set to take place in Winterthur, Switzerland in August. The team will represent Namibia at the upcoming World Championships tournament. The teams that participated in the tournament were Fuel Pump Repair Warriors, Spur, Play Time Development Team, Walvis Bay Strikers, Namibian Radio Services Agency and PPS Knights are all players from the harbour town. The Annual T20 Coastal Social Cricket League will come to life tomorrow Saturday 15 June at the Sparta oval in Walvis Bay. Spur Walvis Bay also known as Hickory Creek Spur, will be the main sponsor of the well-established T20 League. Spur Walvis Bay confirmed their commitment toward developing the game of cricket in the coastal community back in 2017. The Spur T20 league will once again be hosted by JCCA under leadership of Riaan Lottering and Nolene Winborn. Hickory Creek Spur Walvis Bay is fully committed to ensure the wellbeing of cricket in the coastal community and their investment in the game of cricket is to improve and assist and taking the game to the youth as part of their future. The teams that participated in the tournament were Fuel Pump Repair Warriors, Spur, Play Time Development Team, Walvis Bay Strikers, Namibian Radio Services Agency, PPS Knights from the harbour town and Khomasdal Titans from Windhoek will battle it out on Saturdays and Sundays with the final to be played on 11 August. The Namibian National Cricket team will play a T20 cricket game against the Multiply Titans from South Africa. The game will take place on 28 June at 13:30 on the Sparta cricket oval in the harbour town. The community are invited to come and support the Namibian team. Entrance will be free of charge for all.

Seven athletes from Swakop Striders competed in the gruelling 86.83km Comrades Ultra-marathon from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on Sunday 9 June. The Comrades is the oldest ultramarathon in the world and is run annually between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. The direction of the race alternates each year between the "up" run starting from Durban and the "down" run starting from Pietermaritzburg. Depending on the exact race route this is a distance between 85 and 90km. This year around 20 000 runners lined up at the start in Durban for the “up” run, heading 86.7 km to Pietermaritzburg. The cut-off time for successfully completing the race is 12 hours. André Ross was the only athlete that runs for the first time in his green number, which he earned in 2018. The green number is a permanent race
number awarded to a runner after successfully completing ten Comrades. Three of the Swakop Striders (Anja Kreiner, Wicus Burger and Raimund Kintscher) earned their back to back medal, which is awarded to novice runners who finish two Comrades in succession. Kirsty Brits and Johan Bronkhorst were running their 6th and Faghan Pocsi his 4th Comrades.
