No easy life for a mullet fisherman A baby girl weighing a mere 510 grams was born at the Welwitschia Private hospital in Walvis Bay on 3 December. The tiny human wonder is doing fine and is currently hospitalised at the Lady Pohamba Private Hospital in Windhoek (pictures taken shortly after her birth). Namib Times spoke to the baby's mother, Mrs Ester Vatileni yesterday who said she and her husband Heikki are very proud of their daughter and delighted with the progress she makes.

An alleged antagonism by some South African agencies over Namibia's recent entry into the vehicle assembly market has been described this week as early perceptions at a time when there was not much information available. As information emerged eventually, it turned out that the South Africans in actual fact welcome Namibia into the ranks as a vehicle producing country within the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) and also the broader SADC. An N$190 million vehicle assembly plant for semi-knocked down (SKD) Peugeot and Opel fabricates recently opened its doors in Walvis Bay. The plant, known as Peugeot-Opel Assembly

Namibia (POAN) is operated by French automaker Groupe PSA and has a production target of 5 000 vehicles per annum by 2020. The vehicles are exported to South Africa from where it is distributed to dealerships

in Namibia, Botswana, South Africa itself, Lesotho and Swaziland. As the market evolves, Peugeot and Opel plans to enlarge its market footprint into the remainder of Southern Africa. Continues on page 2

Fatal crash on the B2 coastal road Eileen van der Schyff A 27-year-old man was killed in a car accident on the B2 coastal road yesterday morning, bringing the death toll to five people killed on Erongo's roads since 1 December. Law enforcement agencies yesterday made renewed calls for motorists to be vigilant to prevent road accidents. The driver of this GWM pick-up lost control of his vehicle near the turnoff at Bird Island (pictured). He was underway from Walvis Bay to Swakopmund when the accident occurred. The deceased was identified by the Walvis Bay Police as Mr. Franico Esly Huseb (27). A 26-year-old passenger only sustained slight injuries.

The Chairman of South Africa's National Association of Automobile Manufacturers (Naamsa), Nico Vermeulen, yesterday in a telephonic interview with Namib Times said the South African vehicle manufacturing industry “has no tensions” with Namibia's entry into the market. It is legitimate and conforms to all requirements as player in the market for semiknocked down vehicles. Neither are there tensions to be observed from the side of the South African Department of Trade and the South African customs authority. An article that appeared in the mentioned South African publication was not entirely correct, Vermeulen explained. “We only had snippets of information”, explained Vermeulen. Adding in the meantime things were put into perspective and that in actual fact a second launch will be hosted by POAN at a later stage that would incorporate the South African media as well. Vermeulen also said contrary to what the article stated, he could not detect any animosity from any South African stakeholder over the establishment of the factory. Vermeulen explained POAN imports 55 components from which the semi-knocked down vehicle is assembled into a fully functional vehicle. “That meets the requirement of a semiknocked down assembly facility and no South African counterpart finds any fault with that”, explained Vermeulen. He estimated POAN to pay around 3,5 % import duties on these components. Namibia's membership to SACU also means no import tariffs are levied upon the import of the vehicles from Namibia to South Africa. “Had Peugeot imported fully completed vehicles from the European Union into Namibia, the import duties would have been 18 %”, further explained Vermeulen. Not only is this financially more viable for Peugeot-Opel in the long run, but for Namibia it holds the multiplying effect on job creation (one job created the auto making sector supports five new jobs downstream). Secondly support industries and support services evolve around such auto making sector (backward and forward linkages). Note: it turned out from the information supplied by Vermeulen, Namibia's evolutionary development in the auto making sector is in for a highly capital-intensive exercise should the country want to venture into the Completely Disassembled Vehicle (CDV) sector. In this instance a car has to be built from scratch. According to Vermeulen such a plant could cost as many as one million US Dollar and requires a large pool of skilled labour. Then there are also the economies of scale. A CDV factory is only viable if 100 000 or more vehicles can be built there per year.

Walvis Bay businessman faces multiple charges after he crashed into garage and then left the scene

A well-known businessman of Walvis Bay faces multiple criminal charges after he crashed his vehicle through the garage of a house in Meersig early on Wednesday morning and then fled the scene in his damaged vehicle. In the process he also knocked over a lamp post. The man is expected to make a first court appearance in this regard in due course. The force of the crash also badly damaged a vehicle that was parked inside the garage at the time of the accident.

Naraville resident killed in Eileen van der Schyff car crash A resident of Naraville, Mr Malcolm McNab (49) died in a vehicle accident on the C14 gravel road east of Walvis Bay on Monday. A Nissan pick up towing a trailer overturned. McNab who was as passenger was the only person who was killed in the accident. The accident occurred approximately 60 km from Walvis Bay. The 54-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle after a rear tire blowout. There were ten passengers, mostly children aboard the ill-fated vehicle. Apart from Mr McNab that died, all the other passengers only sustained slight injuries. The youngest child in the vehicle was four months old and the oldest 18-years-old.

Thugs target Domestic workers going to and from work Thugs are reportedly ambushing domestic workers crossing the B2 coastal road between Kuisebmond and Narraville daily, robbing them of their cell phones, cash and even food. Several of the domestic workers who fell victim says in the event they don't have any valuables with them, they are physically assaulted as a way of “punishing” them. “There is a significant number of people of Kuisebmond employed in Narraville as domestic assistants. Every morning on their way to work or in the afternoons on their way back home, thugs are ambushing them in the dunes next to the B2 coastal road. The attacks occur in the area between the welcoming sign of Walvis Bay on the B2 and the pedestrian crossing”, a very angry employer said this week. “These workers are robbed on an almost daily basis. In the morning the thugs target cell phones, cash and other valuables. In the afternoon they not only target valuables, but even food an employer might be sending home with their domestic assistants. Taxi money and any other form of valuables are taken and when the victim has nothing to give, they are assaulted with the fist and with knobkieries

Walvis Bay Deputy Mayor and Founder of JMCF, Penelopé Martin - Louw said “The event was only for the elderly 65 years and above and the vulnerable children of Sunshine centre and the Multipurpose centre in Walvis Bay”. Martin-Louw added that the Foundation is there to help the elderly and therefore need sponsor to make all their projects a success. Correira said at the event that “It's not how much you give but how much love you put into giving”. Correira added that she is pleased to be part

of this project by JMCF which was established by Deputy Mayor Penelope Martin-Louw in honour of her late mother and acknowledged the contributions that the Foundation has made to the elderly and vulnerable children in the community over many years and that she is looking forward to be part of many more projects being implemented by JMCF. “The elderly and vulnerable children are important to the community and acknowledged the contributions made by the elderly towards the community over many years and that the children are an inspiration to her and that they deserve just the best in life” Correira added. Mullet fishing

Hard work and hope keep them going The sight of men going out on their small boats, packed with fishing gear, often looks like the simple life we all desire. Away from a hectic every day life, close to nature with a fresh sea breeze ever present. The realities of the lives of Walvis Bayâ€™s mullet fishermen however, are far removed from the romanticisms of a simply life. The life of a mullet or small fisher is one where only hard work pays off. A life where hope for a better fishing day tomorrow lures them back to the sea once more. It is a tough operational world for small fishermen. Limited income often hampers much needed maintenance to their boats, fishing gear and vehicles that must tow the boats on land or deliver the fish to the market. The work of a mullet fisher is physical and challenging. Mullet is a low value fish and profit margins are tight. Men endure long days on the water, under the scorching sun. No time to appreciate the fresh sea breeze or appreciate the beauty of the marine environment. The fish must be caught and the fishermen must return to shore before the wind picks up and the sea gets rough.

Robbers target elderly couple in holiday flat An elderly couple from Windhoek enjoying their holiday at the coast are still at loss of words after they were robbed at gunpoint on Thursday. The couple stays in a holiday flat and whilst the elderly Mr Samuel Jacobus van Garden was going outside to smoke, three armed overpowered him and forced him back into the flat where his wife was. The police described the armed robbers as dark in complexion. One of the men was armed with a handgun. The incident is said to have occurred at around 21:29. The robbers stole two laptops, three Apple iPhones, two watches and two diamond rings with a combined value of N$ 123 00000. The suspects fled on foot. No injuries were sustained by either of the robbery victims during the attack. No arrests have yet been made, nor had any of the aforesaid items been recovered by time of going to press. The police appeal to the public; should anyone have any information regarding the suspects or the stolen items, they are requested to contact Deputy Commissioner Iikuyu on cell 081 246 4757 or Detective Warrant Officer J. Geiseb on 081 262 9842 immediately. Holiday makers are also urged to take caution and let common sense prevail for the good of everyone's safety. Always ensure valuables are locked away and don't create opportunities for thieves and robbers. Especially at home. FNB Swakopmund gives Christmas Sharlien Tjambari presents to Ann's angels The First National Bank's Swakopmund area office donated Christmas presents to children in the DRC informal settlement under its kindness program: Random Act of Kindness, to surprise the children at a soup kitchen in DRC. On Wednesday this week eight staff members from the Swakopmund FNB Branch consisting of Samuel Franz (Sales Area Manager), Wessel Victor (Operational Area Manager), Nicky Louw (Human Resource Business Plan Area Manager), Lucille Moller, MeoLee Swartz, Rosa Kantema, Stephanie Van Wyk and Rodney Coetzee (SME Area Manager), visited Ann's Angels Soup Kitchen located in DRC, to give Christmas presents to over 200 beneficiaries of the soup kitchen and shared cup cakes with the children. FNB also donated vegetables and drinks towards the soup kitchen. Ann's Angels Soup Kitchen was founded by Anna Karises in 2014 and started with only

50 children from the informal settlement whose parents could not afford to put bread on the table for them. Now, after four years, the number of children has drastically increased to 250. Anna gives food to the kids every Wednesday, but said she really hoped she could do more. “I hope that by next year, with the help of sponsors, I will be able to provide my angels a meal two times a week. I am very thankful to FNB for this kind donation, before they approached me, I was so worried about my angels and where I will find presents for them this year. When they told me they were coming, I was very excited”, said Anna.

Decoder innovation keeps TV on trend in Africa In this time of increasing viewing options from internet-based media providers, many wonder if the satellite TV decoder is still relevant. Given the abundant features on today's advanced PVR decoders and the unrivalled access these decoders provide African viewers to licensed content like live programming and world sports events, the short answer is yes. But it is only through constant innovation that decoders will remain ahead of the curve, placing TV viewing at the very cutting edge of technology. It had long recognised the future potential of using mobile devices to access TV programming, and after much research launched its first mobile decoder for Android. This would later evolve into DStv Now, the company's current livestream product that enables DStv customers to watch DStv online from any digital device. This paved the way for the internet to play a greater role in how customers accessed DStv programming, and the following year MultiChoice unveiled another first in its WiFi dongle, which allowed the Explora decoder to connect directly to the internet. This connection to the internet allowed for customers to set a remote recording. For instance if they were out for dinner and forgot to record the latest Manchester United game it was as easy as opening their DStv application on their cell phone and setting the recording from the restaurant. Connected features are at the heart of future development on the MultiChoice decoders. These decoder innovations point to consistent efforts to enhance the TV viewing experience for satellite TV customers in Africa. This is important, given that satellite TV is expected to continue playing a significant role in the lives of African consumers in the near future. The satellite dish has come to symbolise wealth and aspiration in Africa, and this – a long with their decoders that bring the magic of modern TV home – is not going to change anytime soon. In January 2019, a new Montessori pre-primary will open its doors in Swakopmund. Swakopmund (sk) Im Jahre 1918 wurde das ehemalige Schreibwarengeschäfte Kurt Trede, das sich später in eine Allgemeinwarenhandlung namens Kurt Trede Central Bazar entwickelte, von Dieter Goethjes Großvater Kurt Trede in Swakopmund eröffnet. mann aus Deutschland mit, der die Kinder der Küstenstadt Jahr für Jahr erfreute. Als der Kurt Trede Central Bazar 1993 für immer geschlossen wurde, übernahm Heidi Snymann vom Cafè Anton den Knecht Rupprecht mit dem Wackelkopf. In diesem Jahr aber wurde der historische Weihnachtsmann wieder, wie damals, in ein richtiges Schaufenster gestellt, nämlich in jenes von Otto Günther, wo er weiterhin den Kindern zunickt. “Der gute Mann ist also tatsächlich 100 Jahre alt und funktioniert immer noch”, lacht Kurt Tredes Urenkelin Dr. Babsi Watermeyer. “Nur das Mäntelchen ist nicht mehr ganz frisch”, fügt Babsis Mutter Traudel Goethje hinzu.

Weihnachten "urgemütlich" Weihnachten ist "urgemütlich", das fängt lange vorher an. Selten einigt man sich gütlich, wie man sich beschenken kann. Insbesondere die Kinder haben alles, woll´n noch mehr. Sie auch sinnvoll zu beglücken fällt den Eltern äußerst schwer. Und so rennt man durch die Läden, läuft herum wie fremdbestimmt. Und auf weihnachtliche Stimmung ist nur die Musik getrimmt. Täglich wird die Hektik schlimmer, ungerührt der Countdown läuft. Und der Berg, er wächst noch immer, den man kaufend angehäuft. Schließlich schleppt das Weihnachtsbäumchen man noch heim mit letzter Kraft. Nach dem Aufstellen und Schmücken ist man dann total erschlafft. Schemenhaft sieht man die Seinen, nimmt sie kaum noch wahr, doch weiß, flieht man nicht, erwartet einen nächstes Jahr die gleiche sch...öne Bescherung. Horst Winkler

Wir durften es somit gleich in die Arme nehmen, zumal es auch kein Frühchen war, das im Brutkasten erst aufgepeppelt werden musste, sondern als strotzend-strammer Max ausgereift zur Welt kam. Ein Kaiserschnitt war auch nicht vonnöten, denn unser Kindlein wollte ohne Komplikationen ganz natürlich in das wunderschöne Leben hineinpurzeln. Getauft haben Mama und Papa es auf den Namen Locker vom Hocker 6 aus der Namib Times. Am folgenden Tag haben wir in der Buchhandlung “Die Muschel” der neugierigen Verwandtschaft bzw. unserem interessierten Freundeskreis an Lesern, unser Neugeborenes vorgestellt. Natürlich waren wir über den Besuch von 33 Gratulanten höchst erfreut. Sicherlich werden nicht alle dem Babygeschrei voll Entzücken gelauscht haben, aber zumindest haben alle andächtig zugehört, und das ist

Twitter und all jene, sofortige Aufmerksamkeit fordernden Sozialforen, verlernen wir Menschen nämlich immer mehr das Zuhören. Um so überraschter war ich von den aufmerksamen Besuchern am vergangenen Samstag in der “Muschel”, die unserem Baby voll und ganz ihre Ohren schenkten. Dann wurde mir klar, dass das Durchschnittsalter der Muschelbesucher um die 60 und mehr liegen musste, und - tja - die ältere Generation beherrscht eben die Fähigkeit der Konzentration weitaus besser als das Jungvolk. Wir sollten unseren Kindern daher immer wieder Gelegenheit zum Zuhören geben, denn das aufmerksame Spitzen der Ohren will gelernt sein. Und den Wert des Lesens sollten wir unseren Kindern bereits mit in die Wiege legen. Das jedenfalls meint ihre BuchMutter Susann Kinghorn

Namibian Jiu-Jitsu fighters Lesley !Hoaëb , Giano Alcock and Delano Müller from Sylvio Behring Jiu Jitsu academy in Walvis Bay qualified for the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu championships in (UAEJJF) United Arab Emirates. The qualifications were done at theJiu-Jitsu National Pro Championships -GI (with Kimono) in Johannesburg South Africa. The fighters will have the opportunity to represent Namibia next year at the South African Championships that will be held on 2-3 March in Cape Town South Africa. The names of these fighters' will be on the UAEJJF Ranking and is the mathematical method of ranking men and women on a calendar-year basis. The UAEJJF Ranking is the objective merit-based method used for determining qualification for fighters' entries and seeding in all championships. Giano Alcock won the Gold medal in the 38kg division and Delano Müller secured Gold in the open division. Lesley !Hoaëb ended in 5th place in the under 77kg as well as in the Ultimate open division.

Phillip Seidler, Justin Vosloo and Erich Goeieman was the winners of the Team Triple Thread at the First National Bank Sandman Triathlon, which took place in Swakopmund.

An exceptional total of 272 competitors participated in the popular triathlon, with the start/ finish and transition area located at The Mole. The event organised by OTB Sport accommodated 162 individual competitors and 37 threemember teams. Triathletes could opt for participation in the ultra, standard (1km swim, 40km cycling and 10km run), sprint (400m swim, 20km cycling and 4km run) or mini 150m swim, 7km cycling and 3km run) categories. Desert Dash 2018 Isaac Chikosi

Platz Am Meer Swakopmund was the finish line for annual Desert Dash this year. The six-stage mountain bike challenge that began in Windhoek on Friday afternoon brought together riders from various walks of life.
