Biggest cocaine bust in history
Members of the Walvis Bay Police were stunned over the weekend by the sad news of the death of three of their colleagues in a vehicle accident on Saturday evening near Kalkfeld. Several other police officials who were also traveling in the same vehicle were injured. Some of whom are still in a serious yet stable condition. The Regional Crime Investigations Coordinator for the Namibian Police in Erongo, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Ikuyu yesterday morning released the names of the deceased. They are Sgt Haididila Paulus Likuwa (34), a member of the Second Hand Vehicles Subdivision in Walvis Bay, Sgt Allan Hoebeb (42) stationed at the Kuisebmond police station Sgt Paulina Nakale Uusiku (40),
a member of the K-9 Unit at Walvis Bay. According to Deputy Commissioner Ikuyu a tyre blow-out was the cause of the accident. The driver lost control of the Toyota Quantum. It resulted in the vehicle leaving the road and overturning. “Members Likuwa and Hoebeb died at the scene of the accident and Sergeant Uusiku passed on at the Omaruru State Hospital”, Deputy Commissioner Iikuyu explained. other nine members of the Force who survived the accident two sustained serious injuries that necessitated their evacuation to the Katutur State Hospital in Windhoek. Others were hospitalised at Usakos and Swakomund, some of whom were already discharged. At the time of going to press there were no clarity yet as to where and when a joint memorial service would be held for the deceased.
Bail application Dinath Ashar and Grant Noble, the two prime suspects nabbed in what became the biggest cocaine bust in Namibia’s history, will start with a formal bail application in the Walvis Bay magistrates court this morning. This bail hearing is set to continue until Thursday. Ashar and Noble were arrested on Friday 15 June this year, after 413kg of cocaine were found stashed in a cargo container in the port of Walvis Bay. The container, which originated in Brazil via Cape Town, was laden with carton boxes of photocopy paper which also served as the means to conceal the haul of cocaine. Various agencies, which included law enforcement and customs, placed the container under surveillance since it first arrived in port aboard the container vessel Amanda D on 8 June. When Ashar and Noble came to clear the container, the net closed around them. It is believed both Ashar and Noble have a wealth of information to share with the investigating team, as it is believed they were not alone in the deal which saw the cocaine shipped from Brazil to Cape Town and then on to Walvis Bay.

The recovery of uranium markets prices are key to the survival of uranium mines in Erongo and would prevent the inevitable – retrenchments. This was said on Friday by the Minister of Mines and Energy Tom Alweendo during a visit to Swakop Uranium's Husab Mine. The average market price for uranium remains at around US$23 per pound, as opposed to US$60 per pound when many of the mines were constructed. Minister Alweendo expressed hope that the situation would improve, but implied this cycle could still take several years to materialise. “The way things are: it is not easy to be a mining company right now”, Alweendo said visibly worried about the situation and would it holds for uranium mines. Langer Heinrich Uranium (LHU) is one example where market forces dictated the closure of production of the mine indefinitely, retrenching workers and only keeping a small core of workers who would be maintaining and caring for the mining infrastructure. Minister Alweendo said in this instance it is important for the uranium market to recover, in order for LHU to resume production and to re-employ its work force. Alweendo said in challenging times like these it is important for mining companies to revisit and constantly improve cost structures. In the absence thereof profits dwindle and can create a situation where mine owners have to subsidise operations to stay afloat. In this instance Minister Alweendo expressed satisfaction with the fact Husab continues to find a way to continue production, despite the current economic hardship the uranium sector faces. “Husab Mine's contribution towards the mining sector cannot be underestimated. We need to increase local sourcing and procurement. We want Namibian-owned companies to be the ones to produce goods and services that are going to be used as input in the mining operations”, the Minister said. He admitted however, there is still work that needs to be done to fully achieve local sourcing and procurement. That include Namibian businesses that need to work meticulously to meet the standards required by the mining industry for service and goods suppliers”.
Education key to inmate rehab and re-integration Rudi Bowe
The mandate of the Namibian Correctional Service (NCS), is to contribute to the protection of the society by providing reasonable, safe, secure and humane custody of all offenders in accordance with universally acceptable standards, while assisting them in their rehabilitation, reformation and social reintegration as acceptable law abiding citizens. The new Officer in Charge of the Walvis Bay Correctional Facility Assistant Commissioner Edwin Axakoeb recently re-committed himself to this mandate, at the handover of 15 computers to the Facility by the Namibian Literacy Trust. Commissioner Edwin Axakoeb appealed to non-Governmental Organisations and individuals alike, who want to offer rehabilitation programs to offenders, to come forward. He can be contacted at his office to discuss the assistance to the inmates and in doing so assist offenders to re-integrate as law abiding citizens. “Basic education is vital to the success of inmate re-entry into society. Those obtaining qualifications under the General Education Development Program show lower rate of recurring offences once released. For those imprisoned there is not only the possibility and resources to earn this basic standard of education, but they may also attend college and in some cases even move on to graduate school” Axakoeb explained. 'It is the responsibility of all of us to assist offenders to become law abiding citizens, otherwise they will keep committing crimes and we as the community will be the victims of these crimes. People can change if efforts are put in place to identify their risk and needs and to give them the opportunity to address the risks and needs” Axakoeb further said. Axakoeb urged society to join efforts to assist inmates who are willing to turn around their lives. The computers donated will be used in the education of the inmates and assist with the rehabilitation programs.

A young man, Anusnius Goseb (23), died on the spot on Saturday around 07:30 after his girlfriend stabbed him three times in the chest and on the left side of his back. The incident took place at Okombahe during a domestic dispute. According to a police report of the Erongo regional crime investigating coordinator Erastus Iikuyu, the deceased and his girlfriend Catheleen Zelda Guriras (22) returned home to Guriras's shack after a night out. An argument and physical fight ensued between the two. When the confrontation started, Guriras allegedly ran away to look for assistance and managed to get hold of her uncle. She allegedly asked her uncle to go help her chase Goseb away from her shack and upon arrival, Guriras stabbed Goseb. Deputy Commissioner Iikuyu said it is at this stage not clear as to what happened and what lead the accused to do what she did. The next of kin of the deceased were informed. The suspect was due to appear in Omaruru Magistrate Court yesterday on a charge of murder.
2018 Tekkie day The Cancer Association of Namibia this week launched the “2018 Tekkie Day” campaign in support if children fighting cancer in Namibia. Tekkie Day was initiated to create awareness about cancers affecting children, by inviting Namibians to purchase a sticker or shoelaces at N$20 from the association and wear tekkies with these funky shoelaces to work or school on the last Friday of August annually. September is traditionally “Yellow and Gold Month” to help raise funds for the CHICA (Children Fighting Cancer in Nami-bia) fund of CAN, and we kick off the month by “walking in hope for our kids afflicted by cancer”. CHICA administrates the CHICA Interim Home as well as the CHICA support fund that provides financial aid to childhood cancer patients. OvaHimba village at Swakopmund closed after wind ravaged structures Sharlien Tjambari The OvaHimba Cultural Village near the Martin Luther Museum is currently facing some challenges. Strong winds ravaged the structures to such an extent in recent weeks the project founder Marikondjo Tjambiru, opted to close it down for the time being and to use wooden poles to strengthen the structures. The huts of the village are constructed from palm leafs covered with cow dung. Palm tree leaves are also used to fence the village, which is intended as a tourist attraction and to teach locals about the OvaHimba culture. About two weeks ago, Tjambiru decided to temporarily close the village, as the strong winds kept on knocking down the structures. Although the OvaHimba don’t use rock drilling equipment, trucks and wooden poles as a normal technique to construct their villages in Northwestern Namibia, it seems the only option in Swakop-
mund. Tjambiru appealed recently for the public to come forward and support the project. Wooden poles to strengthen the structures and equipment to dig holes in this hard, rocky terrain near the Martin Luther monument seems to be the only option remaining. Even for a truck owner to lend a helping hand, said Tjambiru. “If there is someone who can offer us the use of a truck, we would highly appreciate it. We can use the vehicle to transport wooden branches from Kunene Region to Swakopmund, in order for us to construct proper fencing”, he explained. The OvaHimba Cultural Village was constructed
for tourists and Namibian to experience the Himba culture and customs. Also to see their traditional craft, dances and singing. The village was sponsored by the Namsov Community Trust, through the Office of the Governor of Erongo. The village was also built to relocate Ovahimba women trading at Kavita Park. Relocating the women will bring them in contact with more tourists to sell their products to. Tjambiru said he hopes for the problems and challenges to be sorted out as soon as possible, in order for the project to be officially opened and for it to serve its purpose in the wider Swakopmund tourism sector.

Link between burglary-syndicates and import vehicle market in SADC Staff Reporter There is a positive link between burglary syndicates operating at the coast and the drivers of second hand imported vehicles. The port of Walvis Bay is the import hub for imported vehicles destined to Namibia's neighbouring Zambia and also the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This follows after the arrest recently of a Namibian, Petrus Doeseb (34), and a Zambian, Austine Mweene (39), by the Walvis Bay Police after a number of flat screen televisions and laptop computers were found loaded in the cargo hold of a DRC-bound truck. The Police reacted on information received from the public and made the arrests where the truck was parked in Walvis Bay's 6th Street. They have little doubt the electronic equipment were stolen during burglaries in Walvis Bay and possibly also Swakopmund. The suspects could not provide a sufficient explanation of the origin of the equipment, leading to their arrests. They appeared in the Walvis Bay magistrates court in the meantime on a charge relating to the possession of suspected stolen goods. “The truck was destined for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)”, the Police confirmed through its regional crime investigations coordinator Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu. There were in total: 2 Hisense flat screen televisions, 1 Samsung flat screen television, 2 laptops (HP and Asus) and two laptop chargers. The port of Walvis Bay is the import hub in the second hand imported vehicle trade
between countries such as the United Kingdom and Japan, with countries like Zambia and the DRC. The vehicles arrive by vehicle carrier ships (“ro-ro's”) and after being cleared are driven in convoy to the neigh-bouring countries of destination. Over the years however, these imported vehicles became a head ache to residents of Walvis Bay and also to the local authority. These vehicles are not leaving Namibia's borders within the time frame provided for by Customs and Excise legislation. The vehicles need to be out of Namibia's borders within 72-hours after cleared from port. Instead, the vehicles are parked on Walvis Bay's streets for extended periods of time. Secondly, these vehicles are not allowed to carry any freight or cargo. In many instances smaller vehicles are loaded onto the vehicles, which constitutes cargo. Many of the trucks are also laden with household items like washing machines, fridges, televisions and even furniture the owners purchased overseas and are importing to the neighbouring countries. There is a huge question mark over whether Namibia receives any import tax from these items. Thirdly, the vehicles are not allowed to carry passengers. It is common though for these vehicles to have four and five passengers, under the guise they are co-drivers who need to rotate due to the long
distance the vehicles have to move. Fourthly, these vehicles are mostly left-hand drive, leading to a dangerous situation on Namibia's roads where all motorists drive on the right-hand lane. These vehicles are often driving convoy, which leads to dangerous situations when motorists want to overtake. Several calls were made already in the past by small transport operators that they be given the opportunity to drive these trucks and other vehicles between the port of Walvis Bay to the respective border posts. These small operators argue it is an opportunity to create local jobs, as the number of imported vehicles circulating through the port of Walvis Bay amounts to thousands of vehicles in any given year. These operators further argue once locals do the driving there would be no need for the influx of foreign drivers from neighbouring countries, the opportunities for syndicates using these vehicle convoys to shop stolen goods and even drugs would be minimised and road safety would improve, as these drivers will be operating as a concerned group of Namibians who too want to see the country's road safety improving. Accident claims life of man on C-14 road
A 38-year-old man was killed in a vehicle accident on the C-14 gravel road east of Walvis Bay on Friday morning. A Nissan station wagon (N126046WB) left the road and overturned after the driver lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle was traveling from Windhoek to Walvis Bay when the accident occurred. The driver was seriously injured. Also injured were a 21-year-old and a 29-year-old. Both males. They were evacuated to Walvis Bay’s state hospital. The deceased was identified as Jeremia Hoeb (38). A case of culpable homicide and reckless or negligent driving was opened against the driver.
Waste skip on fire This waste disposal skip caught fire on the premises of Magic and Jumbo Discounters in Walvis Bay on Sunday morning. Passers-by alerted 518 Neighborhood Watch Group who in turn notified the Namibian Police. The fire brigade was at the scene promptly to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire is unknown, but on the picture a man is seen trying to extinguish the flames. That was before the authorities were alerted.

Alweendo also said: “We need to continue to discover more minerals in order for the Mining sector to continue being relevant, to be primary and more prominent as it is today. We need to look at the system that we have got in place, how to award exploration licenses and who do we award it to because the ultimate goal is to find minerals as quick as we can only then can we continue having employment in the sector, but what I have seen here today is quite impressive and the company is to be applauded”. Husab Mine is one of the largest employer in the mining sector with 1600 permanent employees. The Chief Executive Officer of Swakop Uranium Cai Yusheng described Husab Mine as a mountain of financial burden because of the huge investment which they have put in this project. The total investment in the Husab Mine is US$5 billion. The average capacity of the mine in terms of product is around 6500 tons in one year and for one month is around 540 tons. Yusheng said they are currently doing a performance test in some areas in order to see if they can produce the target of 540 tons.

Labour relations are very important in every company and if the labour relations of any company is not as good as it ought to be then the production will be disturbed, this was said by the Minister of Mines and Energy Honourable Tom Alweendo at Husab Mine last Friday. Alweendo visited the mine to familiarise himself with the mining operations at the Husab Mine last week Friday. “I had a briefing with the management of Husab Mine and they believe that their labour relations are as they should be and they do not have disagreements that causes labour problems but of course there is always room for improvement”, added Alweendo. He said sometimes some of the conflict that arises
between employers and employees is because people simply just don't talk to each other in a way that force their trust, “the one side assumes that people should just understand what is going on especially as an employer, therefore communication is always the best way to create trust between the two parties and I am happy that one of the values of Husab Mine is transparency and accountability”. Every day, Namibian girls who come from impoverished communities are forced to miss a few days of school, not because they are not committed to their studies, but because they do not have sanitary towels or tampons to use when they are on their periods. There have been various initiatives by good Samaritans to quell this issue by supplying these learners with sanitary towels and tampons, because of the potential they possess to contribute to the socio-economic development of the country in the future. This week, Blue Bankers at the Standard Bank Rundu Branch, lent a helping hand to
the Pebbles Foundation's Pebble Campaign by raising funds and purchase sanitary towels for learners in their region. The Pebbles Foundation is a non-profit organisation which seeks to uplift previously disadvantaged communities. Its Pebble Campaign specifically works to provide sanitary pads to school-going girls from disadvantaged communities.
“The Pebble Campaign is one that is really close to my heart, because I know that girls are the leaders of tomorrow, we need to empower them in every way possible to ensure that they receive a good education so they can reach their full potential,” Standard Bank's Rundu Branch Manager, Muahala Ya-Kalimbo, said of the initiative. Yo-Colombo said that when the foundation approached them, they jumped at the opportunity to help because of the difference it would make to the lives of these learners. Although they only managed to donate a box and a half, she stressed that they will be eager to join forces with the foundation again next year. “Our motto is that Namibia is our home, we drive her grown, what better way is the to drive that growth than by empower her future leaders? I urge everyone to dig deep and really help this worthy cause as we will continue to do,” she said. The Pebble Foundation is making great strides already in the region, having already donated sanitary pads at the Elias Neromba Secondary School in the Kavango East Region to 200 girls last week.

Complicated lifting operation in port
The port of Walvis Bay is the stage this week to a very complicated water-borne lifting operation. The crane ship, Saipem 3000, is alongside at berth number one where a structure on the ship, weighing close to 350 tons, will be removed and placed on the quay. It is crucial for this structure to be removed from the ship, in order to make certain parts of the vessel accessible for repair- and maintenance work. “It is almost like pulling down your pants for an injection. After the injection you pull your pants up again�, explained a port worker who is reasonably familiar with the work to be done. The massive crane on Saipem 3000 will lift the structure back onto the vessel after the repair and maintenance aboard concludes. What also makes this operation delicate is the fact that the weight placement of the structure to be removed must be carefully planned in order for the quay to accommodate such a heavy object without crumbling or collapsing, namib times was told recently.

The International School of Walvis Bay had an Internal Science Fair on 14 June 2018 where a total of 80 learners displayed their research and projects. 20 Learners were invited to the Walvis Bay Cluster Science Fair. Six ISWB learners were selected to take part in the Erongo Regional Science Fair held in Swakopmund. These learners brought back the Trophy for Best Primary School and Best Secondary School.

Nedbank Betterball New Interim Executive Saturday, 4 August saw a good turnout of players for the annual Nedbank Betterball Medal Competition. As always it was good to have Raymond on hand to officiate at the prize-giving.
Despite the good golfing conditions there were no two-clubs recorded. Tri-athletes rounding up medals at the 4 triathlon series that took place Saturday, 11 August at the Biokinetic Rehabilitation Centre in Walvis Bay. Angelique de Klerk from the Biokinetic Rehabilitation Centre in Walvis Bay said “We are very pleased with the turnout of events and with the great support of our community in taking part in our local events. This time around they introduced Veterans and Masters, Teens, and Kiddies categories. The distances of the respective categories were: Advanced - 600m swim, 20km cycle, 5km run; Novice - 300m swim, 10km cycle, 2km run, Teens - 180m swim, 7km cycle, 1.5km run; Kiddies - 30m swim, 500m cycle, 100m run. The winners of each category were: Advanced female: Wilmerie Schäfer (1hr 15min 15sec), Advanced male: André Struass (1hr 19 min 47sec), Novice female: Anika Steinmetz (31min 28sec), Novice male: Firmino Dias (29min 30sec), Veterans female advanced: Marion Himmel (1hr 40min 57sec), Kiddies male: John Carter Mouton (5min 5sec) Angelique thanked BUCO, Optic Exclusive, Coca-Cola, OTB sport, BE SEEN BE SAFE, Coetzee & Grant Cardiac Physiologists for contributing to this spectacular event. Imcor Chiefs FC and Eleven Arrows Netball Club is the winners of the 2018 Sports and Entertainment Festival held for the fourth year in the Small Oasis Town of Usakos. The event which is primarily co-sponsored by Orano Mining Namibia (formerly known as Areva) and Engen One Stop Usakos Service Station, together with the assistance of other various associate sponsors, attracted sports, scouts, teams, sports fanatics, music lovers and entrepreneurs from all over Namibia to Usakos for an epic weekend of sport, fun, entertainment, marketing and leisure. The event that started in 2015, with the primary aims of: providing a stepping stone for talented and aspiring sports men and woman to trade their skills and perhaps be scouted by teams in the elite leagues of the country if not the world and for vendors and entrepreneurs to trade and create platforms and improve their socio-economic well-being. Helping musical artist and bands to market their music and connect with their fans and most specially to attract potential investors to Usakos. To explore the town's potential, engage and seize the opportunities to bring development projects to the town, which would in the process create jobs and boost the live-hoods of the locals. Managing Director of Orano Mining Namibia Mr. Hilifa Mbako said 'This is really beautiful, and we knew from the onset that it is something more meaningful that goes beyond sports.It is good to know that we continue touching lives and reaching out the best we can and what is more satisfactory is seen that people are seizing the opportunity and selling their products.” The football category had a festival record with a total of 35 teams competing for the championships, whereas the Netball category had 12 teams competing vying for top honours. This year's completion was tougher for the participating teams in both categories, as compared to the previous years. The less fancied teams, from smaller towns and places were more prepared and that saw favourites
like Maroko Boys FC (Usakos); Karibib Footbal Club; Soronto Bucks; Dolam Pirates; Western FC (Hentiesbay) not reaching the semi's this time around. Imcor Chiefs FC, which is coached and managed by one of the former Orlando Pirates great midfielders, Felix Witbooi, deservingly won the football category as they knocked out Pforte FC (from farm Pforte) on penalties, before beating Usakos Mighty Stones Football FC who also beat Kaizer Chiefs FC from Arandis 3-0 on penalties in the final to be crown the champions. The exciting Isaaskar 'Bio' Gurirab scored a total of 5 spectacular goals throughout the tournament, to scoop the cash money for Top-goalscorer, whilst his team-mate 'Moko' walked away with the player of the series award for his enterprising skills, vision and consistency in all the matches he had to play. The boys from Uis walked away with a total cash prize of N$14 500, 20 gold medals and a floating trophy, whereas Usakos Mighty Stones were awarded N$7,000.00 and silver medals. A toughly contested netball finale saw Eleven Arrows beat Henties Bay Netball Club to be crowned champions and pocket N$5 000 in cash and Gold medals with the floating trophy.
