Wild Horses The remains of eight South African and four British soldiers were exhumed at Walvis Bay's Mulderene cemetery this week and are due for reburial in the Swakopmund municipal cemetery's acre of the war-dead on 12 November this year. The death of these soldiers occurred during the Second World War in the Walvis Bay area and at sea, as a result of accidents, drownings and illness. They were buried at Mulderene more than seventy years ago. The remains were placed in small white caskets, normally used for the burial of very young children. See full report on page 2.
Shark attack in Namibia now recognised by international body Erwin Leuschner
Namibia has its first official shark attack incident entered into the database of the International Shark Attack File (ISAF). Three years ago, Windhoek resident Jan Sieber was windsurfing at the Walvis Bay speed strip when he was bitten in the right foot by a shark. After a lengthy operation he made a full recovery. This is now the first and only recognized Namibian shark attack. But, there is no need for panic! Shark attacks in Namibia are virtually nonexistent and makes Sieber's case exceptional. "I probably surprised the shark when I put my foot into the water. The shark was probably right there, just bit down and swam off again", Sieber explained to namib times this week. He immediately realized it was a shark bite, but could not exactly see what type of shark it was, as the water is quite murky. Once Sieber swam back to shore, he was admitted to hospital. Initially he thought the shark had only damaged muscle tissue, but it turned out that tendons were also severed. He could not move his toes anymore, and had to undergo and intricate operation where the tendons were re-attached. For a few months after the incident he endured immense pain in the injured foot. "But all is well now", Sieber continued. He made a full recovery. It was suspected at the time the shark in question was a seven-gilled cowshark. It is commonly found in the lagoon. The upper teeth of cow-sharks resemble sharp spikes. The lower teeth are razors – the injuries on the foot match wounds that could have been caused by teeth of a cow-shark. Sieber submitted information and photographs of the incident to the International Shark Attack File (ISAF). ISAF is an initiative of the Florida Museum. ISAF records all shark attacks globally and has developed an extensive database. Specialist from the museum analysed photos of the bite wound and came to the conclusion the shark that bit Sieber was approximately six feet long (1.8 meters). "Based on the information given we could not narrow the culprit down to a specific species, but can confirm that it was a shark of the Carcharhinidae family (which includes bulls and blacktips) rather than of the Lamnidae family (which includes white sharks and makos)", was the reply. According to ISAF the leading country where most shark attacks were reported is the USA (1352), followed by Australia (607) and South Africa (250). Is Sieber scared of going back into ocean? "Not really", he says. Instead of windsurfing he has now taken up lessons in kite surfing.
Nandi-Ndaitwah said value addition to African products is now more important than ever. Recently, African Heads of State and Governments took the decision that at least 25% of Africa's raw materials should not leave the continent unprocessed. "Therefore, Namibian business people must pay special attention to add value to our products", she said. This will create the necessary jobs "instead of exporting jobs." According to Nandi-Ndaitwah, the global economic slowdown had a negative impact on the Namibian economy. "However, if we work together as public and the private sectors with one common goal of poverty eradication, our role to economic recovery will be manageable to the advantage of our own people", she continued. Private public partnership (PPP) is possible, but needs to be done with honesty, transparency and a common purpose. The Minister added Swakopmund is strategically located and can be a base of industrialisation. "Energy and water can be generated from this area, be it solar, wind or the waves. Sea water can be desalinated into agricultural, industrial and portable water. So, Swakopmund and Erongo can be one of the bread-baskets of this country", she said. Nandi-Ndaitwah also announced that Namibia has joined the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) Presidential Infrastructure Champion Initiative and that the country has submitted four projects: the Baynes Hydro Power Project; Trans-Kalahari Railway Line; Trans-Orange Corridor and Port of Lüderitz. "All these projects have been accepted and we are now in the process of finalising them so that we can evaluate how the development of these projects can speed up. If we invest in these projects, we will be able to realise the dream of vision 2030", Ndaitwah concluded.
Remains of twelve soldiers exhumed at Walvis Bay Re-interned in the acre of the war-dead in Swakopmund on 12 November. The remains of eight South African and four British soldiers were exhumed at Walvis Bay's Mulderene cemetery this week and are due for reburial in the Swakopmund municipal cemetery's acre of the war-dead on 12 November this year. Five of the eight South African soldiers served in the S.A. Native Military Corps and will become the first black soldiers interned in the Swakopmund cemetery. The four British will also be the first British Commonwealth servicemen interned at Swakopmund. Swakopmund's municipal cemetery is the last resting place of 63 soldiers of the German Army and South African armed forces who died during the South West Africa Campaign (1914/15). The SWA Campaign ended German occupation of South West Africa and was part of the war effort in World War I (1914-1918) against Germany. The exhumations in Walvis Bay were carried out under the supervision of a representative of the Commonwealth War Graves Association and was locally assisted by funeral house Avbob. Each grave was individually exhumed and the remains of each soldier placed in a separate white casket. It was understood the remains are to remain in the safekeeping of Avbob until a military reburial takes place on 12 November, on Remembrance Sunday. Remembrance Sunday is observed in all Commonwealth on the first Sunday that follows on 11 November of each year, to commemorate this day in 1918 when the guns fell silent of World War I. Two die on road leading to Skeleton Coast Park Erwin Leuschner
Two people passed away on Tuesday morning after a vehicle accident on the salt road between Henties Bay and the gate leading to the Skeleton Coast Park. Two other occupants of the vehicle, including a two-year old boy were injured. According to the police report the accident occurred at about 9:30, 92 kilometers from Henties Bay. It is alleged the driver, David Byl (26), lost control over his vehicle, a dark blue Toyota Corolla (N 18637 S), after a tyre blow-out. The vehicle left the road and overturned. Byl as well as the passenger, Matheus Haufiku (45), died at the scene. Kavira Sadnag (34) and the child were initially transported to Swakopmund state hospital for medical treatment. Sadnag's condition has been described as stable. The boy was transferred to Windhoek in a critical condition, as he sustained lifethreatening injuries. The deceaseds' bodies were transported to the police mortuary for a post mortem to be conducted. The next of kin have been informed.

34-year old Johannes Alfeus who is accused of illegally harvesting ten rock lobster on Saturday at the new waterfront in Vineta (Platz am Meer) was granted bail of N$1 500 in the Swakopmund magistrates court on Monday. Magistrate Conchita Olivier remanded the matter to 23 October for plea. State prosecutor Paulus Shilongo did not oppose bail. Alfeus said he will conduct his own defense. The accused has been charged with illegally harvesting rock lobster during a closed season. He was apprehended on Saturday evening at about 23:00, allegedly in the possession of ten rock lobster. Some were also under size. He was allegedly using a net. Two other fishermen who were allegedly catching barbels the same evening at the Waterfront were only given verbal warnings.

Consumer lobbyist Bob Ziekenoppasser passes away Staff Reporter
Ve t e r a n c o n sumer lobbyist Bob Ziekenoppasser passed away in Swakopmund on Saturday at the age of 67. Ziekenoppasser leaves behind his sister Yv o n n e B o s Ziekenoppasser and brother Ronald Ziekenoppasser. According to Yvonne Ziekenoppasser her brother was admitted at the Swakopmund state hospital about a month ago. He passed away as a result of kidney failure. "Bob was always very helpful. He always went the extra mile for the people around him and only thought of himself later", she said. Ziekenoppasser was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands. In Windhoek he founded the Namibian Consumer Lobby and was outspoken about consumer rights. He remained steadfast in his conviction the Namibian consumer is being charged more for less by manufactures. In fuel we trust
The future bulk fuel storage facility for Namcor is taking shape in Walvis Bay, despite the project being the subject of controversy over alleged overspending on the initial price tag of N$4 billion. Namibia's bulk fuel stockpile is estimated at fifteen days. The bulk storage facility will have a capacity of 75 million litres of fuel, an equivalent of a fuel stockpile of up to thirty days. The facility is situated in the vicinity of the fish factories and will be linked by a pipeline to the new liquid bulk fuel terminal that is also currently under construction north of Walvis Bay. Through Namcor, the Namibian Government is the 100 % shareholder in the fuel storage facility and liquid fuel terminal.

Man arrested for catching rock lobster at Waterfront in Swakopmund Safari Investments, the developer of the Platz am Meer shopping mall in Vineta, has issued a stern warning and reiterated that no fishing whatsoever is allowed on its premises. The warning was issued after a person was allegedly caught red-handed with ten rock lobsters on Saturday evening. "Not only is the rock lobster season closed, the man was using a net to catch the lobsters", said Centre Manager Ilse Marais to namib times. The accused was due to appear on a charge of illegally harvesting marine animals in the Swakopmund magistrates court yesterday. At the time of going to press the suspect was yet to make a first appearance in court. According to Marais there have been various incidents in the past whereby fishermen used the enclave created by the breakwater of the shopping to fish. "Fishing on this property is illegal. Security guard commits suicide with service pistol A security official turned his 9mm service pistol on himself yesterday morning between 09:00 and 10:25, at house no. 3778 in Mondesa's Oletweni location. This SRA letter is about responsibility, good citizenship and leadership. All the articles below relate to one of these qualities. We all need to look to ourselves to check our roles in these matters. It is most heartening to see some of the comments made in the report about the broken down and vandalised braai area situated on the northern Vineta beach. This area has been an eyesore and a problem ever since it was put into place, and no doubt, it will always be so. In general, the opinion is that individuals should be responsible for their actions. Why is it always up to the municipality to pay and repair for broken facilities, for foul conditions and for dangerous environments? When are we as a society going to grow up and develop a sense of pride in our behaviour, our manners and our actions? Do we urinate against our walls at home or throw down bottles so that we are walking through broken glass? Do we rip out our toilet facilities and throw filth around? Why do those who use our public facilities not control their behaviour? Sadly, it seems that we have reached the stage where public facilities must be supervised and monitored, probably for a fee paid by the users. Only then, like the facilities at the service stations, will they remain usable. Our lovely town is paved and well presented. Those of us who have lived here for many years remember the salt streets with telegraph poles running down the middle and no pavements. Today many streets and sidewalks are paved at great cost, and a great difference and improvement has been made. However, on almost every street repair work, or changes have been made and the pavement, which should be safe and neat, has an area of missing pavers, often with the removed pavers sitting to one side for years and years ..... never to be replaced. Offenders are usually Telecom or Erongo Red, but there are others. Why is no follow-up ever done to restore the street to a safe and neat condition? This should be a natural sequence of the maintenance work. Why is there no control done? Driving down from Windhoek we are now faced with long queues of cars trapped behind slower-moving trucks. This has become a fact of life with the demise of Trans-Namib as a transport medium. Once again the answer lies in proper training and an awareness of road safety. Truck drivers should be told that when a queue forms behind them, they must draw to the side for a few minutes to let the traffic go by, and therefore prevent unsafe overtaking and impatient driving. This law is followed in Europe and makes excellent sense. It would be wonderful if the traffic police could help keep an eye over this too, but perhaps they will all be busy working for the NBC and checking up on TV licences!! Many years ago, the tern-fence alongside the road to Walvis Bay was constructed to save the tern eggs from being damaged by off-road vehicles, and to keep our dunes unspoilt and attractive for tourists. However, now that NACOMA is no longer functioning, this fence is now the responsibility of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism. It has fallen over in places and needs urgent time and attention or before too long the vandals and spoilers will be back. It is with great satisfaction that we read of the proposed restrictions on the areas in which the bothersome makalani sellers can operate, but without doubt they will not keep to these boundaries. The by-law might be in place but what about our never-present police force (who are also probably checking up on TV licences) ? We all know that when makalani sellers are turned away they become viciously aggressive and foul-mouthed and many tourists have had shocking experiences with them. Winter is drawing to an end and there are only about 5 weeks left of school. Soon Swakopmund will be busy and vibrant again. Take care and check your home for possible entry points, do not leave valuables in your cars and be a good neighbour – keep a careful watch on the street you live on. 24-year-old woman charged for raping minor boy 24-year-old Catherine Kooper remains behind bars after she was arrested for allegedly entering into a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old boy at Swakopmund. Kooper made a first appearance in the Swakop-mund magistrates court yesterday on a charge of rape and bail was denied. The case was confirmed by the police yesterday. According to the Namibian Police's spokesperson in Erongo, Commissioner Erastus Iku-yu, the suspect started a sexual relationship with the 15-year-old boy in August this year. It is alleged the suspect accommodated the victim at her place and they performed sexual acts on numerous occasions. The police further stated the victim dropped out of school due to this relationship which lasted until 5 October. Kooper was arrested on a charge of rape (combating of immoral practice Act, Act 21 of 1980) which was opened at the Mondesa police station. More details surrounding the case are not yet available. Namib Wild Horses: the struggle for survival continues The Namib Wild Horses are still battling for survival on the Garub plains in the Namib Naukluft Park, near Aus. As the hoped-for Winter rains have not materialised in southwestern Namibia, the plains are still a barren sandpit with little or no vegetation. The survival of the Namib horses is still very much dependent on the feed provided by the generous donations from the public. Horse numbers continue to plummet and not a single foal has survived since the onset of the drought in 2013. At present, only 40 mares and 70 stallions fight for survival. Since 2014 there has been no more than 5mm of rain at any one time on the Garub plains, an amount that is insufficient to promote new grass germination or any significant growth of perennial grass. The condition of the remaining horses has fluctuated in the last 23 months, depending on the quality and palatability of the feed supplied. Nearly a quarter of the horses have deteriorated dramatically and are in poor or very poor condition, half are in mediocre condition and the rest remain in good condition. Many of the horses will not survive, but the Namibia Wild Horses Foundation (NWHF) believes that it is pos-
sible to save the core group with the conti-nued donations from kind and open-hearted people. Unfortunately, predation by Spotted Hyenas during the years of drought has exacerbated the situation. Much of the game (such as gemsbok, springbok etc) that forms the hyena's natural prey migrated north after the first rains of 2017 and the predation on the horses increased to an unsustainable level. When the survival of the wild horse population came into question, the foundation approached the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) to find a possible solution. Various options were discussed, including the relocation of the wild horses to a 'Wild Horse Sanctuary' on suitable land where they would be protected from the hyenas. It, however, remains a dream and does not seem like a viable option right now as the land that is available for sale comes at a large investment of almost N$35 million, an amount that will take much effort to raise - and considerable time, which the horses may not have. In a meeting with the Namibia Wild Horses Foundation earlier in the year, the Ministry of Environment and Tourism sanctioned the supplementary feeding of the Spotted Hyenas. This has reduced the pressure on the wild horse population enormously and the number of horses targeted per month by the hyenas, which would have already put the
horses below the critical point of survival. It remains a short-term solution, how-ever, as the wild horse population continues to drop to dangerous levels. With the situation as it is at present, it is possible that the population of wild horses could be extinct soon, unless drastic measures are urgently taken. In the meantime, an action group, the 'AusLüderitz Tourism & Business Action Group', has been formed by a group of concerned individuals, most of whom are directly involved in the tourism industry, to lobby for the wild horses' survival. They have, with the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) – Lüderitz branch, also approached the ministry regarding the importance of the wild horses as a valuable national asset, a drawcard and a major tourism attraction in the area, as a plea to secure their future. They emphasise that the extinction of the wild horses will negatively impact tourism in the //Karas Region and in Namibia in general, with repercussions for everyone. Using visitor statistics, they have identified the Namib Wild Horses as one of the top ten tourist attractions in Namibia, ranking on par with the Fish River Canyon and Kolmanskop Ghost Town. The action group does not advocate the relocation of the horses (the horses, after all, have lived on the plains for over a century and do not compete with any other
The wild horses of the Namib have lived in the inhospitable plains around Garub for more than 100 years wildlife in the park). Rather, they recognise that there is an urgent need for Intervention at this critical time. They understand the management of the hyenas to be vital - and the only solution to ensure the survival of the horses. This remains in the hands of MET. Although discussions are still underway with the action group, the foundation and the ministry, every moment is crucial for the survival of the wild horses as they lose condition daily, are continually targeted by the hyenas and fight for their lives. Time is of the essence. Thanks are due to the staff at Klein Aus Vista, who continue to make an enormous contribution to the wild horses by distributing feed for the horses and hyenas. Heartfelt gratitude is also extended to members of the public who continue to donate generously to the Namibia Wild Horses Foundation for feed. A big THANK YOU! The annual WalVISfees has grown from strength to strength each year, and this year was no exception. The festival brought bigger and better stalls and entertainment to the table, as anticipated. The wine auction, which has gone hand-in-hand with the festival kicked off on Wednesday, 4 October, whereas the rest of the festival commenced on Friday, 6 October, at the Jan Wilken Stadium. A large variety of stalls were on display, from homemade goods to delicious foods, including the best seafood at the coast as well as great entertainment for adults and kids. The fun continued on Saturday with the Hake Run and Ride, Sterkman Competition, Artistic Trampoline show, a paintball coarse, target shooting, mini golf and jumping castles. The festival was ended on a high note with a celebration service on Sunday.

Freitag, der 13. - was ist Roter Ballon der Liebe dran am Aberglauben? Freitag, der 13. - passiert da etwas Unangenehmes? Das fürchten viele Menschen. Doch gibt es den "Schwarzen Freitag" wirklich? Die schwarze Katze muss eigentlich fast immer dran glauben, sie ist eins der größten Unglückssymbole der Mythen, die sich um den Freitag, den 13., ranken. Abergläubischen Menschen kann kaum noch etwas Gutes widerfahren, wenn sie das Tier an einem Freitag, den 13., sehen, dann vielleicht auch noch unter einer Leiter hindurch laufen müssen und auf einer Bananenschale ausrutschen. Doch woher kommt der Mythos eigentlich? Zeitlebens hatte er dieses ungute Gefühl. Er ahnte, dass er an einem 13. sterben würde – im Alter von 76 Jahren, weil die 6 und die 7 in Summe eine 13 ergeben. Und tatsächlich starb der Komponist Arnold Schönberg am 13. Juli 1951, angeblich 13 Minuten vor Mitternacht. Es war ein Freitag - und Schönberg, berühmt für seine Zwölftonmusik, war damals 76 Jahre alt. Rational lassen sich solche Phänomene kaum erklären. Volkskundler und Soziologen sprechen in ähnlichen Fällen von einer „selbsterfüllenden Prophezeiung“. Das heißt: Sobald jemand etwas fürchtet, verhält er sich anders - und
genau deshalb steigt die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass ihm etwas Unangenehmes widerfährt. „Bei einem solchen Datum siegen unsere Emotionen über unsere Ratio“, sagt Rainer Wehse, Lehrbeauftragter im Fach Volkskunde an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in München. Sein Spezialgebiet: Aberglaube. Seine Erklärung: Freitag, der 13., ist eine ungünstige Kombination - denn sowohl die Zahl 13 als auch der Freitag stehen vielfach für Unglück. „Es gibt gute und schlechte Zahlen“, erklärt Wehse. Die 12 symbolisiere Ordnung und Vollkommenheit: Tag und Nacht haben jeweils zwölf Stunden. Das Jahr hat zwölf Monate. In der Bibel ist von den zwölf Aposteln die Rede. Die 13 hingegen bringe Chaos ins System: Jesus wird von Judas verraten dem 13. Gast beim letzten Abendmahl. Im Märchen verflucht die 13. Fee Dornröschen. Und im Tarot ist die 13. Karte der „Tod“. Oft wird die 13 auch mit Satan in Verbindung gebracht: Als Teufelsdutzend bezeichnet man „12 plus 1“.
Die Angst vor der 13 geht heute sogar soweit, dass es in vielen Hotels kein 13. Stockwerk gibt und auch kein Zimmer mit der Nummer 13; es heißt stattdessen „12A“. Manche Fluglinien lassen die Sitzreihe 13 aus. Und einige Restaurants legen ein 14. Gedeck „für die HotelKatze“ auf, wenn die Gesellschaft aus 13 Gästen besteht. Ähnlich wie die Zahl 13 steht auch der Freitag für negative Ereignisse: Es ist der Todestag Christi. Adam und Eva wurden an einem Freitag aus dem Garten Eden vertrieben, weil sie die Früchte vom Baum der Erkenntnis gegessen hatten. Kinder, die an einem Freitag auf die Welt kommen, sollen vom Pech verfolgt sein - im Gegensatz zu Sonntags-Kindern. „Napoleon ist nie an einem Freitag in eine Schlacht gezogen. Otto von Bismarck hat an keinem Freitag Verträge unterzeichnet. Und Johann Wolfgang von Goethe blieb an Freitagen im Bett“, sagt Wehse. „Sie können die Leute nicht beeinflussen. Aberglaube liegt in der Natur des Menschen -
manche sind mehr abergläubisch, andere weniger“, sagt Wehse. In einem seiner Seminare saß mal eine Studentin, die leidenschaftliche Reiterin war. Eines Tages wollte sie ein Pferd kaufen – „ihr Traumpferd“. Doch zu dem Hof, wo das Pferd stand, führte nur ein Weg – und dieser Weg war einer Sage nach verflucht. Die Studentin hat das Pferd nie abgeholt. „Sie hatte furchtbare Angst, dass ihr etwas zustößt.“ Wehse glaubt, dass viele Menschen vor Freitag, dem 13., Angst haben, weil sie immer wieder lesen, dass sich an diesem Tag Schlimmes ereignet hat. Zu den meist zitierten Unglücken zählt der Börsencrash vom 13. Mai 1927. Er ging als „Schwarzer Freitag“ in die Geschichte ein – die Kurse stürzten ein und hunderte von Anlegern verloren ihr ganzes Vermögen. „Intuitiv würde ich jedem raten, sich vor Augen zu halten, dass Aberglaube Quatsch ist – dass wir in einer rationalen Welt leben, in der es keine gesicherten Belege dafür gibt, dass am Freitag, dem 13., besonders viele Unglücke passieren“, sagt Wehse. Er selbst hält sich nicht für abergläubisch. Und doch gibt es einen Gedanken, der ihm nicht behagt: „Wenn ich meinen Ehering verlieren würde, ich hätte ein komisches Gefühl. Was könnte dieser Verlust über die Zukunft meiner Ehe aussagen?“ Barbara Nazarewska

Sport News Piscs Monthly Medal Last weekend was the PISCS MONTHLY MEDAL kindly and still sponsored by JJ and his team. A fairly good field of 37 players turned out and it was one of our stalwarts Rocco Viljoen who won the day with a great 73 gross while Wynand Breytenbach won the best nett with an impressive 63. Best nett in the 'a' division was Koot Potgieter on 74 while Frans Grobler won the B division on a great 66. Not to be left behind Oom Pikkie smoked the course to win the C division on a good 69. Well done guys. There were 6 x 2 clubs. Well done to all. Only one more PISCS medal left for the year on 18th November, and there is a lot up for grabs. This weekend is the MANICA DAY and we hope to see mike, Jaco Joseph and the rest of the team on the course with us for the day. The list is up so please append your names. The format is a better ball Stableford. On Sunday was the monthly sages and in good weather it was Potch Alchin who scored a good 38 points to win the first prize. Potch has been playing good golf for a while now so a new handicap is certainly in the pipeline. Second on 36 points was 'old ringer' Jens, with Hannelore third on 34 points. New CEO for Cricket Namibia Cricket Namibia announces the appointment of Mr Peter Forster as the new CEO. His three year Contract with Cricket Namibia began on 2nd October 2017. The three year contract of Dr. Donovan Zealand expired on 31st August 2017 and in terms of good Governance Procedures, the Board of Cricket Namibia decided to advertise the post of CEO. Dr. Zealand subsequently accepted a position at the Namibia University of Science and Technology. Following due process, Mr Peter Forster was found to be the ideal candidate for the position. Mr Forster was born on 19th April 1960 and is a Namibian citizen. He is a qualified Civil Engineer and has over twenty five years of experience as a Professional Engineer. Over the past eighteen years he has developed extensive experience in the financial and management aspects of business through the day to day administration of various companies. The Board of Cricket Namibia continues to aspire to greater heights in all aspects of the game of cricket, both on and off the field. In striving for excellence, change becomes inevitable. Given the current global and local financial challenges, sound administrative, management and financial planning is a priority in achieving our goals. The Board has placed enormous emphasis on these qualities and will therefore look to restructure where necessary to ensure that emphasis is placed in these areas to ensure that the development of the game of cricket remains sustainable within the economic confines. Namibian Short Course National Debut Hangana Hake & Run & Ride Receives High Praises Championships 2017 The debut 2017 Hangana Hake Run & Ride that took place over the The annual NAMIBIAN SHORT COURSE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017, sponsored by Old Mutual, took place on Friday 29 September 2017, Saturday 30 September 2017 and Sunday 1 October 2017. The Gala was held in the state of the art indoor 25m swimming pool in Swakopmund (also referred to as the "Ice Cube")It was a short course meet, meaning it was held in a 25m (as opposed to a 50m) pool. The Gala was again proudly sponsored by Old Mutual, without whom the Short Course Season would not have been possible. Six clubs took part in the Gala: Aqua Swimming and Fitness Club, Dolphins Swimming Club, Marlins, Namib Swim Academy and, Oranjemund Sand Sharks and Swakopmund Swimming Club. A total of 142 swimmers swam in 1033 events. The Team Scores (i.e. the inter club competition) is attached hereto. The FINA Point lists for the male and female swimmers are also attached hereto. These lists rank the top swims. 8 Namibian Age Group Records were broken – EliphasNakaleke – men 8/under 100 IM in a time of 1:32.72 Heleni Stergiadis – women 13-14 100 backstroke in a
time of 1:03.27 Women 13-14 100 fly in a time of 1:05.54 Women 13-14 100 IM in a time of 1:06.82 Ronan Wantenaar – Men 15-16 50 free in a time of 24.23 Men 15-16 100 breast in a time of 1:06.23 Men 15-16 50 fly in a time of 26.94 Men 15-16 100 IM in a time of 59.60 Heleni Stergiadis was Junior Victrix Ludorum – points scored per place ex. 11 point for 1st place and 9 points for 2nd place and 7 points for 3rd place etc. and she was the senior ludorum – highest FINA points calculated for 5 events The Junior Victor Ludorums were finalised with HYTECK POINTS to determine the winner (as they both have 99 points). Using this system Jose Canjulo was the winner.

past weekend at the coast between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay was a huge success as spelled out by participants and stakeholders. Owned by Hangana Seafood - a subsidiary of the Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group – this event has drawn approximately 800 participants from both locally and internationally. While fun was the reason for many participants, others were on a mission to improve on their running/cycling times and to compete for a chance to qualify for the annual Two Oceans and Comrades Marathons. Hangana Seafood Managing Director, Herman Theron says the event's success has surpassed his expectations. Theron: "First of all, approximately 800 participants was definitely not what I expected. This event was huge, and I am very pleased at the success and how smooth everything went. Of course great thanks go out to the event's organiser, Francois van der Merwe from Twenty Eleven Communications whose dedication to the success of this event speaks for itself. He is absolutely fantastic! Then of course my team at Hangana Seafood that has shown passion towards this event since day one, and contributed immensely to making it a success. A special thanks to my Personal Assistant (PA), Tanja Payne for her dedicated role in supporting the organizer, and making sure the organizing of the 2017 Hangana Hake Run & Ride is as successful as it has been. And of course, this event would not have been possible without the participants. My greatest thanks goes out to all my fellow Namibians who showed support in participating and making this happen. The Hangana Hake Run & Ride features a marathon, half marathon, 10km fun run as well as a 105km road cycling, 21km mountain bike, 21km fat bike and 5km kiddies race. The 105km road cycling race is a Namibian Cycling Federation sanctioned event and the marathon is a qualifier for the Two Oceans andComrades marathons. The Hangana Hake Run & Ride also forms part of the annual 'Walvisfees', a community event organized by the Dutch Reformed Church hosted on the same weekend in Walvis Bay, o ensure a fun filled race day for the entire family. "In line with the O&L Group purpose 'Creating a future, enhancing life', we are truly excited to add this event that encourages a healthy, balanced lifestyle, to our Corporate Social Responsibility portfolio, as we are confident it will make a positive impact on and enhance the lives of the community within which we operate," Theron noted. A Professional World title fight, three African Kickboxing title fights (Sub-Sahara) and national qualifiers took place on Saturday for all affiliates of the Namibian Kickboxing Federation (NFK). The event was hosted at the Jan Wilken Sport Hall in Walvis Bay. The event carries the name Desert Storm an was hosted for the first time under the auspices of the NFK. Participants and spectators described the event as a huge success and of an international standard. Desert Storm is now an annual event. Three Namibian Kickboxers became African Champions at the event. More than 150 fighters from Namibia, Angola, Brazil, Zimbabwe, USA, Reunion and South Africa contested in this historic event. Participants engaged in semi-contact, points, full contact, low kicks, Kata-series, fitness competitions, Krav Maga and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The World Kickboxing Champion Brandon Mashele retained his title against Hendrick Clain from Reunion with a technical knock-out in the first round. Delano Müller from Namibia is the new Atomicweight African Kickboxing Champion, after he won his first African title fight against Thabiso Mkwebane from South Africa. The Africa Super Lightweight Kickboxing Champion is Lesley !Hoaeb from Namibia after he knocked-out Nico Bezuidenhout from South Africa in the fourth round of their fight. The other African title went to Julian Müller from Namibia who is the Super Middleweight African Kickboxing Champion after beating Johan Scholtz from South Africa. Delano Müller, Lesley! Hoaeb and Julian Müller not only won
these African Tittles, but they are currently amateur World Title holders as well. The President of the NFK, Anita de Klerk, said the following: "The NKF plans to take kickboxing to higher levels and to compete at international level as many times as possible. However, we need companies and individuals to step in with sponsorships, to help us make this dream come true. Students from NKF will strive to motivate, teach and set an example to other martial arts students and the youth in general of Namibia". De Klerk also mentioned all students did exceptional at Desert Storm and held Namibia’s image high. A national team will be selected soon to compete at international events. She expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed towards the success of this first ever Desert Storm event. The President of Ring Contact Fighting Arts International, Master Joe Viljoen, mentioned Desert Storm is the way forward for kickboxing in Africa. The aim for next year is to get more countries to participate. He encourages other African countries to come up with competitions to the likes of Desert Storm. also said that more countries in Africa should host events like the Namibian Desert Storm. Sheila Martins from the Combat Club in Windhoek said: "The entire experience significantly exceeded all our expectations. Seven of our fighters competed

We returned home with one loss by points and a whopping five wins by technical knockout (TKO) in the full contact division, and one win in the close combat division by points. We would like to express our sincere gratitude and congratulations to the event organisers, all the fighters and the supporters for being involved. It was an honour to be part of such a superb event that places Namibia on the map once again". However, I was very disappointing that the Namibian Sports Commission were not represented at the event. A lack of funds was given as the reason for its absence.
NASP Archery Championships at WBPHS this weekend Walvis Bay Private High School is hosting the 2nd NASP Archery competition on the schools rugby field tomorrow. Approximately 150 children from all over the country will participate in the event and will be competing on bull's eye and 3D targets in a fun, friendly and save environment and promoting good sportsmanship, mutual respect and ethical behaviour.

Walvis Bay Private High School has a remarkable success rate, with 7 children who competed in the Namibian team in 2016 in South Africa against Canada and USA in the All Nations All Star competition. Dominique Bekker (then a grade 10 learner) brought back two bronze medals for Namibia in bull's eye and 3D. This year 5 children from Walvis Bay Private High School were selected for the Namibian team and competed against Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa in Windhoek for the Africa All Stars competition. The All Star team brought back two silver team medals in bull's eye and 3D and the Development team brought back two gold team medals in bull's eye and 3D. Jeanine de Jager the basic Archery Instructor Trainer at WBPHS was selected as one of four coaches for the Namibian team. The school would like to invite all parents and residents of Walvis Bay to come and support the schools Archers. The event will start at 08:00.
