Namibia remains Coronavirus-free, health minister Kalumbi Shangula said at a press conference on Wednesday. Worldwide, however the pandemic is spreading, leaving in its wake approximately 5 000 people killed and some 127 000 people infected in 104 countries. [At the time of going to press yesterday at 16:00 that was the official status of Namibia in relation to the global Coronavirus outbreak]. Although Namibia has not registered any cases to date, it has thrown travel arrangements abroad for many a Namibian in limbo. Namibian businesses reliant on Chinese products have been affected. Exports from China dropped so severely during February that container ships have cancelled their schedules and many container ships were sailing virtually empty. At the same time, stocks listed on global stock exchanges all but crashed, as investors were selling off and migrating their funds to hedge commodities like gold and hedge-currencies like the United States Dollar. As the United States Dollar strengthens, emerging market currencies like the South African Rand suffers tremendously and that has become a major headache for Namibian businesses relying imports. Although China has now announced it has the Coronavirus outbreak under control, the remainder of the world remains deeply affected. Countries close their borders to contain the virus outbreaks and travel bans is expected to hit hard. The cruise liner industry worldwide is seeing passenger bookings plummeting and the global airline industry is taking hard knocks as routes are cancelled and passenger bookings either drop or are re-booked to later dates in anticipation the situation would get under control. Some good news is that approximately 68 000 people have so far recovered from Covid-19, but many nations warn the worst is still to come. The 2019–20 coronavirus outbreak is officially known as “SARS-CoV2”, but to prevent misinformation and panic, it is referred to as Covid-19. The disease was first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province in China. COVID – 19 is characterized by fever of more than 38 degree Celsius, cough and difficulty in breathing. The complications may include pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome. There is currently no vaccine or specific antiviral treatment, but research is ongoing. Efforts are aimed at managing symptoms and supportive therapy. Recommended preventative measures include handwashing, maintaining distance from other people (particularly those who are sick) and monitoring and selfisolation for fourteen days for people who suspect they are infected. This outbreak has now affected 104 countries all over the World and as of late yesterday, the confirmed cases of Coronavirus stood at 127 000 cases globally and close to 5 000 deaths. In Africa, Countries such as Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Senegal, South Africa, Cameroon and Togo have all confirmed cases of coronavirus. Most cases were from travellers from abroad, especially China. Only Algeria, Egypt and Cameroon have confirmed Coronavirus cases of people who have not travelled recently.

Namibia has a total of thirteen public holidays, two of which are on the same day each year on 10 December (Human Rights Day and Women’s Day). In the event of any of these public holidays coinciding with a week day, then that week day is a public holiday. When the public holiday coincides with a Sunday, then the Monday is a public holiday. In the event of a public holiday falling on a Saturday, then neither the Friday or the Monday is a public holiday.

20 March is a holiday for all schools.......... The Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture announced this week that 20 March this year will be a public holiday for all schools. It is also an out-weekend for pupils accommodated in hostels. In addition to this, the Ministry also announced Thursday 9 April 2020 as the last school day for Term 1; Monday 11 May 2020 as the first school day for Term 2 and Monday 31 August 2020 as the first school day for Term 3.

Namibia remains Coronavirus-free Continued from page 1 Namibia's Minister for Health and Social Services Dr Kalumbi Shangula at a media briefing said that despite the increase of worldwide shortage on efficient testing apparatus for COVID-19, Namibia continues to strengthen its preparedness. This include putting in place capacities for screening and laboratory testing to detect the virus and take swift action upon that. “I would like to inform the Nation that in addition to screening at our port entries, the Namibia Institute of Pathology (NIP) is able to carry out confirmatory tests for Coronavirus. The capability of the Namibia Institute of Pathology (NIP) to carry out these tests locally, places Namibia among a few African countries that conduct tests domestically. We highly appreciate the support by the Government of Namibia towards the ongoing efforts to strengthen our readiness and preparedness”, according to the Minister. As of yesterday, nine suspected cases were recorded. Two at Lüderitz, two at Rehoboth, four in Windhoek and one at Onandjokwe. These suspected cases all tested negative. Dr. Shangula warned against panic and fear mongering. At Okahandja a man passed a Chinese national wearing a face mask. The man went to the hospital and announced he might now have contracted the virus.

Vehicle theft Continued from page 1 Dr von Ludwiger told the Namib Times this week he always leaves the car's engine running when he closes the garage doors. It takes some three minutes, but on Wednesday it was just those few minutes the thief needed. Dr von Ludwiger praised the Swakopmund Neighbourhood Watch for their action and commitment and expressed relief that the vehicle was retrieved without damage and with the key still in the ignition. A case of vehicle theft was opened and the Namibian Police is now hunting for the car thief. Coastal residents are urged to take care not to present opportunities to criminals. Criminals by their very nature acts on surprise and never stops looking for opportunities. Not only should one be cautious when it comes to motor vehicle theft, but also not to create opportunities in and around your home or at your business or work place.

Friday the 13th Eileen van der Schyff

Friday the 13th – the day that holds a lot of superstition. There are a few origins to this “supernatural” day that caused people's strange superstitions. The fear of the number 13, “triskaidekaphobia”, created traditions such as restaurants missing out the 13th table and builders skipping the 13th floor when designing buildings to avoid bad luck. Norse mythology tells the story of 12 people sharing a meal in Valhalla when a 13th person, Loki, the spirit of strife crashed the dinner and one person ended up dead. Interesting to note that for specific fears of Friday the 13th, one can choose between phobia names “paraskevidekatriaphobia” (Paraskevi, meaning Friday in Greek) or Frigga-triskaidekaphobia, based on the name Frigg, the Norse goddess that Friday was named after in English. The person who ended up dead at the meal in Valhalla by Loki, was her son. Christians' superstitions of this day originates from the Last Supper, where the 13th person at the table was Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus to the Romans. Jesus was also said to have died on Friday the 13th, known as Good Friday. For those who fear Friday the 13th, the good news is that there can't be more than three in any given year, and it is possible to go for as long as 14 months without one. If a month starts on a Sunday, you are guaranteed a Friday that falls on the 13th. This year we get a bit of a break as this day will only occur twice. One, which is today and then July are affected.

“Is Namfi training for the sea or for the streets?” About 90 students who graduated from NAMFI last year 2019 and others in 2018 have not secured sea time aboard vessels so far. They need sea-time for practical training and to gain employable experience. “Namfi seems to be training for the streets not for the sea”, some disgruntled graduates said this week in an open letter to Namib Times. These graduates also expressed concern that the fishing industry is not doing enough to employ people trained at Namfi. The letter reads: “The Namibia Maritime and Fisheries Institute (NAMFI) graduates' situation is dire and needs urgent intervention from government and all relevant stakehol-

ders. The sheer number of graduates on the streets is appalling. They are trained to work at sea only as marine officers hence they can not seek employment elsewhere other then sea. They have acquired theoretical knowledge but no practical experience and they are stuck. We feel with the influx of many trainees being recruited at NAMFI, they will only be trained for the streets as current trend shows. We need sea time upon which we can get their

certificates of competence which will enable us to be employable. We are suffering and we need help as soon as possible. I am part of the 90 students who graduates last year and to date no one of us have secured sea time in the industry for practical training on the vessels. Says one student. There is no training facility in the form of a vessel provided by the government or even donated by the private companies who continually get government quotas and fishing

Three residents commit suicide

The community of Walvis Bay is saddened by the suicide of three residents in a matter of only days. Mr Christo Steenkamp died on Wednesday night after he swallowed a poisonous substance at his home in 7th road. He was rushed to hospital but was declared dead upon arrival. In another incident, on Monday of this week, 15-year-old Frieda Dhiginina was found by her brother in the toilet of their home. The young girl hanged herself with a scarf. Dhiginina was a Grade 8 learner at Duinesig Primary School. In a third incident, Abraham Uuwanga (47), hanged himself last Friday at his residence in Kuisebmond. Uuwanga was renting a place and his body was discovered by the landlord. Uuwanga hanged himself from the raf-ters of the garage. Uuwanga had two children living with him. His wife resides in the North.

Who is supposed to give them experience if not companies that receives quotas yearly with vessels at sea? NAMFI gives them only diplomas which is not enough to earn employment. They need sea time onboard vessels. The unemployment rate among the marine graduates is soaring unprecedented. The reintroduction of student CADETSHIP internship program within the fishing vessels of Namibian fishing companies that will be allocated fishing quotas this year. Cadetship would go a long

way in equipping graduates with necessary experience (make them employable) and would particularly help the fishing companies in areas where they are understaffed. Student cadets should therefore, strategically be placed in the different vessels of fishing companies. Prioritizing NAMFI graduates when appointing new officers within the vessels, as opposed to appointing foreign officers. NAMFI graduates are hardly ever considered for training in the vessels by the fishing companies. They give graduates many excuses such as lack of space and accommo-

dation and that there are no fishing quotas, while most positions in vessels are occupied by foreigners who are beneficiaries of our quotas. Fishing companies are not opening their doors to student seeking for sea time and as such government must intervene. There is a huge unemployment rate of Marine Engineers and Deck officer graduates sitting at home with their qualifications. Fishing companies must be urged to address and prioritize the graduate cadets and groom them as they are their future officers. Government must also look into securing a

vessel to be used as a training facility to train the Namibian Maritime Graduates. This will alleviate challenges in terms of experience required by companies. After training these officers will be equipped with the necessary experience needed and thus making them employable at sea. We appreciate all efforts the ministry has done so far but we also recognize there is room for improvement, the increase in unemployment level in the fishing industry could be easily lowered through strategic engagement and strategic actions with strategic stakeholders and institutions”.

It is suspected that the cause of this overturned truck is driving under the influence. The accident happened on Monday night in Walvis Bay. Authorities visited the scene of the accident in New Western Avenue of the harbour town. The driver tested positive for alcohol. No injuries were reported.

Two arrested for selling mandrax to undercover police officer A 45-year-old lady and a 36-year-old man were arrested in Arandis lost Friday evening at 21:20 for dealing in Cannabis and Mandrax. According to police reports, the two were arrested when they unlawfully and intentionally sold 16x full and 5x quarters mandrax tablets, and 10 grams of cannabis to the value of N4 2750 to an undercover police officer in Arandis.

The incident took place at Success Lodge room, 14 Hospital Street, Arandis. The suspects appeared at the Swakopmund Magistrate Court on Monday, 9 March.

Trucks redirected

The Roads Authority's transport inspectors, last Wednesday redirected all trucks that transport salt from the Walvis Bay Salt Refiners to the Harbour in Walvis Bay to the Walvis Bay Weighbridge. Principal Transport Inspectors at the Walvis Bay Weighbridge said that it is normal practice to redirect trucks at any given time to the nearest weighbridge. These practices are empowered by the Road Traffic & Transport Act of 1999 (RTTA); the Road Traffic & Transport Regulations of 1999 (RTTR) and the Criminal Procedure Act of 1977 (CPA), the RTTI is responsible for the control of overloading thereby reducing road damage. Furthermore, the RTTI is responsible to contribute to road safety by enforcing quality systems; enforce road transport permit regulations and road user charges. The functions and purpose of the RTTI is to: Control overloading by weighing all heavy vehicles above 3500kg aimed at reducing road damage and thus prolonging the lifespan of Namibia's national roads.

Enforce vehicle/ load related standards on all commercial vehicles through inspections conducted at weighbridges and on national roads to ensure compliance with relevant legislations. Enforce road safety regulations by inspecting all commercial vehicles at weighbridges and on national roads for roadworthiness and thus promoting road safety. Enforce legislative compliance to domestic and cross border road transportation through inspections of commercial vehicles at weighbridges and on national roads. Support RFA by enforcing mass distance and entry fee charges through inspections of commercial local and foreign vehicles at weighbridges and on national roads.

Road over-rail bridge now open to public Sharlien Tjambari

The small part of the road on Sam Nujoma Avenue which was closed off in April last year because of rehabilitation of the road over-rail bridge is now open to the public. The bridge was observed to be damaged and distressed which necessitated immediate rehabilitation as a safety measure. Eight vessels call at port

A total of eight vessels are calling at the port of Walvis Bay from today until Monday. The first vessel to call is the container vessel, Paris RJ which will be today. She is followed by the fishing vessel, Desert Ruby and the bulk carrier Unistream on Saturday. On Sunday, the container vessel, Cosco Fukuyama and the general cargo vessel Solanjo calls. On Monday, three vessels will call. These are the multipurpose vessel, Diamond Land, container vessel Aplatlanta and the research vessel Solanjo.

Rössing-wage agreement remain unresolved Sharlien Tjambari

The Mine Workers Union of Namibia (MUN), Rössing Branch on Friday, 6 March made strong allegations against the new management at Rössing Mine. The new management is allegedly derailing the wage negotiations which commenced last year in November and have no intentions to negotiate. Rössing Uranium Mine was officially handed over to China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) last year, where CNNC promised job security, a prolonged life span of the mine, better working conditions and recognition of MUN as the bargaining agent etc. and employees were very excited as they hoped for the best. According to MUN's Chairperson for the Rössing Branch, Johannes Hamutenya, the annual wage increase is one of the many conditions that have been severely threatened

by CNNC Rössing Management, “over 9 years we have enjoyed peaceful, harmonious and mutual annual wage increases. That is no more as it is now under siege by the draconian regime that care less about employees' welfare. This is simply soul selling”. After two conciliation attempts with CNNC, MUN officially announced a Certificate of unresolved dispute of interest which was issued by the office of the labour commissioner on 3 March this year and Hamutenya wants to inform the nation that the employees unanimously gave a mandate for MUN Leadership top prepare for a strike. According to Hamutenya, this development is because the CNNC rejected MUN reduced settlement offer of more than 60% on the basic salary and more than 50% on housing allowance of the original demands. Hamutenya also claims that on 5 March the company employed provocative, intimidating and shameful apartheid, colonial tactics of divide and rule by disregarding communication protocols,

Revival of Pentecostal churches in the Erongo Region Eileen van der Schyff

21 different churches and all together 400 people attended the Pentecostal Conference this past weekend. The conference was behind the police station in Tutaleni, Walvis Bay in a big tent. Pentecostal church Bishops, Pastors and leaders together with their church members people took part in the conference with the next one just around the corner. The aim of the calling of all Pentecostal churches is to bring back those brothers and sister who became trapped in foreign churches and misleading and strange doctrines. “The mission of the Pentecostal churches is to support the government, especially the Namibian police in fighting crime, drug abuse and combating Domestic Violence and to help community members and victims in such cases of

ghetto fires.” Said Harol Haoseb in an inter-view with the Namib Times on Wednesday morning. Pentecostal churches all over the Erongo Region are invited to attend the next conference in revival efforts of Pentecostal churches. The conference will start at 19:00 on Friday evening and then again at 12:00 to 16:00 on Saturday. Later also on, Saturday evening, the conference will start again at 19:00 to late. On Sunday the conference will start at 08:30 in the morning and will end at 15:00. Offenders making a diffeSharlien Tjambari rence As part of their School and Church Information Sharing Campaign six offenders from the Swakopmund Correctional Facility, accompanied by correctional officers, visited the Namib High School to perform a play about the effects of drug and alcohol abuse. The reason why the Swakopmund Correctional facility is targeting schools is because alcohol and drug abuse starts at a tender age, where peer pressure is at its peak. After the play COI Shikongo addressed the learners about the importance of visiting offenders. Shikongo said family ties are very important and the Namibian Correctional Services would do anything to encourage families to keep contact with their Prison loved ones. He further said family visits help families to understand what Prison life is like. “Visiting enables the family to remain intact, meaning that when the inmate is released, he/she is better able to reintegrate in society and unlikely to commit offences again. The person in Prison would also feel loved and to know that there is a shelter for when they are released”, said Shikongo. He encouraged the learners to speak to their parents and not to neglect their loved ones who are in Prison. Shikongo also shared some challenges they experience at the correctional facility, especially during the visiting hours. Shikongo said some people come while under the influence of alcohol and bring in unauthorised items. One of the offenders, Johannes Mushinga took the learners on the journey which let him to Prison and pleaded with them not to take the same path. Visiting hours are strictly during weekends or public holidays. The campaign started last year in September and each term they will visit two school and two churches. The audience consisted of 355 learners from grade 8 and 9.

An der Atlantikküste,in der Namibwüste Die vierte Gertrud Woermann Kwetu-Quiz für unsere Leser! Swakopmund Drei Tage nach Ausbruch des I. Weltkriegs am 28. Juli 1914 stiegen die Amerikanerin Miss Jayta Humphreys und ihr Mann Hauptmann Hansheinrich von Wolf in Lüderitzbucht auf die Gertrud Woermann, um in England neue Zuchtpferde zu erwerben. Da wussten sie noch nichts vom Kriegsausbruch und dass sie das Land ihrer Träume, Deutsch-Südwestafrika, nie wieder sehen würden. Frau Humphreys war die junge, hübsche Enkelin des wohlhabenden New Yorker Arzneimittel-Fabrikanten mit homöopathischer Spezialisierung, Frederick Humphreys, die das berühmte Schloss Duwisib im Maltahöhe-Distrikt für ihren Gatten bauen ließ. Das Ehepaar von Wolf stand am 1. August 1914 an Deck der Gertrud Woermann, einem Schiff der Woermannlinie, von denen es vier mit dem gleichen Namen gab. Die Gertrud Woermann, auf der die von Wolfs auf hoher See von der Kriegserklärung Englands an das Deutsche Reich erfuhren, weshalb der Kapitän - um der Kaperung durch englische Kriegsschiffe zu entgehen den Kurs zum neutralen Hafen Rio de Janeiro in Brasilien wechselte, war die Gertrud Woermann IV. Um das herauszufinden, musste ich ziemlich recherchieren, da es kaum Informationen über die vierte Gertrud Wo e r m a n n g i b t . Selbst das Wühlen in den sgn. Passagierlisten, auf die Georg Erb von der Swakop Tour Company mich netterweise aufmerksam machte, ergab leider nichts. Inzwi-schen wusste ich aber, dass das Ehepaar von Wolf weder auf der Gertrud Woermann I noch auf der II oder III- seine Reise nach England antrat, von

der es nie wieder nach D-SWA zurückkehrte. Wie kam ich darauf? Nun, die Gertrud Woermann I, seinerzeit das größte Schiff der Hamburger Reederei, war 1743 gebaut worden und strandete bereits 1903 vor Port Nolloth. Von Wolfs verließen DSWA jedoch 1914. Die Gertrud Woermann II, 1904 von der Woermannlinie als Schiff mit dem Namen

Woermann in Schwierigkeiten geriet und 8 Woermann-Schiffe an die Hapag verkaufte. Die dritte Gertrud Woermann wurde noch in demselben Jahr, nämlich 1907, in Windhuk umgetauft. Auf welcher Gertrud Woermann verließen Baron Hansheinrich von Wolf und seine attraktive Gattin also 1914 ihr Traumland Südwest?

Aber noch kann der Photograph unvergessliche Bilder aus der Tierwelt unseres Landes festhalten: Groteske Insekten, das reiche Vogelleben oder die Antilopen der Steppe. Noch kann der

echte Jäger, der zugleich Tierbeobachter ist, den Zauber der Pirsch genießen. Denn wenn er auch das Wild erlegen will und statt der Kamera die Büchse trägt, er ist kein Vernichter. Wie in Europa will er auch hier das Wild für kommende Geschlechter erhalten und ist bereit, dafür Opfer zu bringen. Vernichter der Tierwelt sind jene Menschen, denen Nutzen und augenblicklicher Vorteil alles sind, die im Wild nur das Fleisch und im Raubtier oder Greifvogel nur den Schädling sehen, nicht aber ein Stück eigenartigen Lebens und ein Erbe, das der Nachwelt erhalten bleiben muss. Die extensive Landwirtschaft unseres Landes bietet Raum für Mensch und Tier. Etwas von ihrer Begegnung möchte dieses Buch zeigen. ENDE

Inland Versus Coast 2020 Contributed

Shrikes Bowling Club was the host of the annual Inland versus Coast Bowls tournament on 7 and 8 March at Rossmund Bowling Club in Swakopmund. The Shrikes are men who have represented Namibia at least three times in International tournaments not played in Namibia. The tournament was very generously sponsored by Swakopmund based Tara Nawa Computer Software Solutions. Eighteen players from the Coast were matched by eighteen players from Inland, who were put into teams of three players each, resulting in twelve teams in total: six from the Coast and six from Inland. The format was three bowl triples. This year the tournament was played over four rounds, and each game consisted of 14 ends each. On the first end of each game, the team who were closest to the jack were awarded one shot only, irrespective of how many shots they actually had. Each team had one power play in the game where, for that end, they doubled their score if they won the end. If the opposition won, the team with the power play got 0. This led to some very skewed scores. The Coastal teams proved to be too strong for their opponents and, overall, the first six teams were Coastal teams. Inland had to be satisfied with the bottom six places. In the first place were Steven Peake, Norene Liebenberg and Andre Campbell; second were Tollie Cronje, Avril Kotze and Kobus van Mollendorf; third were Ian Crawford, Lynne Lindsay-Payne and Yvonne Booysen. When asked about

the tournament, Lynne Lindsay-Payne said, “I enjoyed it very much. This is always a fantastic tournament. It is competitive but the camaraderie between the players is always very good.” Jenny Gardiner, PRO for the Namibia Bowling Association commented, “We are always very grateful for sponsorships, so the NBA would like to thank Tara Nawa profusely for their generosity in sponsoring this event.”

Namibia, making its debut in the tournament was bowled all out for 85 runs as Pakistan won the game by 177 runs after striking out 262/8 in its allowed 45 overs. Sparta Rugby Club from Walvis Bay ended second in the Kudus Rugby Day the past weekend at the Jan Wilken Stadium after UNAM defeated them 12-0 in the final to pocket N$5 000 and N$2 500 respectively. Kudus I and II ended top in the groups after both teams won all their games to qualify for the semi-finals with Sparta and UNAM second in the group face of the tournament after both teams lost to the host teams in their respective group games. Walvis Bay Motor Sport Club with VIVO will host the V-Power Walvis Bay Rally that will start tomorrow, 14 March at the Walvis Express Service Station (Opposite Cymot) Walvis Bay. A total of 16 rally cars will compete in 9 Stages with a distance of 116. 90km in the Stages and 119.81km in the Open Sections with a total of 236.71km in and around the harbor town.

Three gymnasts from the coast are in Egypt to compete in the African Gymnastic Championship from 10 to 15 March. The team, consisting of Mea-Nine Olivier, Joy-Lana Kabooy and D'Laine Olivier, will compete in the under 13, 11 and nine year age categories respectively and are accompanied by their Head Coach Sonja Olivier, Britt Adonis-Byl as a judge Roumiana Kostin as a Coach. Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) Chief Administrator Freddy Mwiya said at their send-off ceremony “We are not saying that you should go out there and give results that favour our girls even if they are not doing well, but when they do well on the field of

play, it should also reflect on paper�. Mwiya said so far there are only two countries the NSC is not allowed to send athletes to and these are China and Italy. Mwiya added that the Namibian Nation do not need to panic about Corona Virus as Egypt is one of the countries that have been cleared as a low risk destination by the World Health Organisation. Head of the Delegation Sonja Olivier said the International Gymnastics Federation has put strong measures in place to protect athletes from contracting the virus.
