A 28-year-old handbag snatcher was sent to jail by a Walvis Bay magistrate on Wednesday afternoon, just over twenty four hours after he grabbed a backpack out of a tourist's hands in the harbour town's central business district. Members of the Namibian Police and also members of the public assisted in arresting the thug after what was described as a lengthy chase. Lukas Shoombe grabbed the backpack out of the hands of the hands of an unsuspecting Mr Richard Hollands, a pensioner and tourist from England. It was on the corner of Theo-Ben Gurirab Street and 12th Road. The backpack contained a Nikon camera, Canon camera and a floppy with the value of N$9 500. Shoombe ran away with the stolen handbag, but soon realised his luck was running out, as from every corner he encountered either a police-

The incident happened as the receptionist prepared to close the medical practice for the lunch hour on Tuesday. “I recognised the man. He was here on Monday and demanded to see the doctor. I recommended he make an appointment and he then said he would return later. On Tues-

day, as I was closing the blinds to lock up for the lunch time, two men came in”, the receptionist explained. She went behind the counter in order to assist them. The one

Narrow escape in the Gaub pass Eileen van der Schyff The occupants of a Volkswagen Combi had a close shave with death early on Tuesday morning on the C14 gravel road in the Gaub pass, when the driver lost control of the vehicle, where after it overturned and came to a standstill only centimetres from a cliff's edge. The combi's trailer dis-attached during the accident and plunged close to a hundred meters down the cliff to the river bed. The trailer is a total wreck and is a grim reminder of how tragic this accident could have ended, had the combi also plunged over the cliff. The accident occurred about 185 km from Walvis Bay towards Solitaire. Two of the Combi's occupants were treated for minor injuries at the Swakopmund State Hospita.

Horror and heartbreak as baby drowns in bucket of laundry water Sharlien Tjambari Parental neglect is believed to be the cause of the drowning of a 16-months-old baby in Mondesa at Swakopmund on Tuesday morning. The child was left alone with a second toddler of the same age. The child fell into a 25-litres bucket of laundry water and drowned. The tragic incident happened in Mondesa's Tulinawa section. It is alleged that the deceased's mother and her friend left the two babies alone at home to go to a nearby shop. According to the regional crime investigations coordinator of the Namibian Police in Erongo, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, the mothers upon their return heard the one baby crying profusely. The mothers rushed into the home and in a room discovered the baby head down in the bucket of water.

The Joschko's, a family from Germany, who toured Namibia in their rented Ford Ranger, was traveling from Henties Bay in the direction of Swakopmund when Dippenaar's FJ Cruiser, traveling from the direction of Swakop-mund, slammed into them at high speed. The maximum speed allowed on the road is 100 km/h. According to Joubert the Joschko's were traveling at 85 km/h. The Joschko couple and one of their daughters were killed instantly. The only survivor in their car was Antonia Joschko, the couple's youngest daughter. Antonia Joschko is now the sole survivor of her family. On that fateful day she was the one moment still enjoying her holiday with her family, and the next moment she held her deceased sister's hand in the mingled wreck of their car. She knew already at that moment she would be faced with the horror news: not only her sister, but also both her parents were dead. In Dippenaar's vehicle he too was the sole survivor. The three passengers in his vehicle, JC Horn, Charlene Schoombee and Dinah Pretorius, were also killed instantly. Dippenaar among others faces six counts of murder. The trial is scheduled for adjournment today and will resume next month when another five days for the trial was reserved. Dippenaar's defence will also bring in a vehicle crash expert.

Credit card scandal Walvis Bay town councillor Samson Nghilumbwa faces imminent suspension

Floris Steenkamp The net is closing around Walvis Bay's embattled town councillor and chairperson of the council's management committee, Clr Samson Nghilumbwa. Nghilumbwa is accused of having misused a municipal credit card, wasting taxpayers' money to the tune of N$83 000. Although the Anti-Corruption Commission is still investigating the allegations levelled against Clr Nghilumbwa, Council nonetheless started with a process as determined legally by the Local Authorities Act, to have him suspended. Council is scheduled to meet at 17:00 on Monday to make final recommendations as to Clr Nghilumbwa's immediate future. (See herewith a press statement the municipality issued on Wednesday in the wake of this scandal that hit the local authority of Walvis Bay). Meanwhile, the Swapo Party (which dominates the Walvis Bay Town Council by an 80 % majority) on Tuesday called for Clr Nghilumwa's immediate suspension from all council meetings and council activities in order for a transparent and fair investigation into the alleged misuse of the credit card. The call for the suspension of Clr Nghilumbwa

was made by the Swapo Party's Okahenge branch in Walvis Bay (Urban Constituency), Reinhold Shipwikineni. It was understood Clr Nghilumbwa misused Council's credit card entrusted to him by making irregular cash withdrawals at gambling houses and purchasing alcohol. It was further understood Clr Nghilumbwa already paid back part of the misused funds, not only creating a scenario of admission of guilt, but fingers are also pointed to municipal employees who either failed to detect or failed to report the mis-spending which took place over a period of four months. The fact that Clr Nghilumbwa was merely requested to pay back the money also implicates the municipal Council and the municipality's administration of failing to report fraud or corruption incidents to the relevant authorities, a former town councillor explained this week.

SWAITEX reports a decline in number of exhibitors Sharlien Tjambari

The Swakopmund International Trade Expo 2018 (SWAITEX) opened its doors to the public this Wednesday with a decline of about 10% registered stall compared to last year. The expo will end tomorrow (Saturday). During the official opening ceremony the Chairperson of the Namibian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) Swakopmund Branch Paul Ndjambula said S WA I T E X w a s created in 2013 with the main aim of creating a platform for SME's and the business community to showcase their products and services. Commenting on the economic situation of the country, Ndjambula further said: “We are all aware of the economic situation of our country and only if we join hands will we improve our economy and the only way our economy can improve is if investors feel comfortable in our region and if our environment is conducive, only then will they invest”. Ndjambula applauded the government support through the Office of the Governor and the

Mayor's Office, as well as the exhibitors. He said exhibitors need to stand out and re-double their efforts and work. “Last year we had a total of 157 exhibitors but this year the number dropped to 135 exhibitors, this is about 30% decline which is not good”. The Chief Executive Officer of Erongo Red Fessor Mbango said: “In the midst of current economic outlook, NCCI continues to assist local business with information on how to market their product, access funding, grow their business and create opportunities for linkages”. Pet owners welcome free rabies immunization This week the Municipality of Swakopmund in collaboration with the Veterinary Services Department carried out free immunization for dogs and cats. The team set up in different venues allowing residents of the different suburbs access. This week-long exercise ends today in the DRC area. Pet owners turned up to take advantage of council's initiative. Various platforms were used to inform the public resulting in a satisfactory turnout. Rabies is a fatal viral disease that affects humans and mammals causing inflammation of the brain. According to Dr August from the Veterinary Services, rabies is a deadly disease passed on to humans from animals; especially dogs. As the virus is found in the saliva, any contact with an open wound from an infected dog can be lethal. She further stated that vaccination and immunisation is essential as dogs and cats are part of our families. 99% of all human rabies cases originate from virus transmission from dogs. Children under the age of 15 constitute 50% of human victims. Once infected, humans may experience a range of symptoms including fever, malaise, agitation, convulsions or death. Due to the prevalence of the disease, dog owners are encouraged to immunize their dogs at the age of three months, one year and every three years after that. Traffic Chief assures that tours by electric scooters are safe Sharlien Tjambari

In about two weeks tourists in Swakopmund will be introduced to electric scooters, which according to the Municipal Traffic Chief Melvin Cloete are safe and do not need to be licenced or registered with the traffic department because they weigh about 49kg. “These scooters are almost like normal bicycles, we have had meetings with Messrs Arthur Lofty-Eaton where he gave us a detailed explanation of how exactly the tours by scooters will be conducted and I must say, the safety aspect was considered. This is a well organised operation and we really hope it works out best”, said Cloete during an interview with namib times. In 1998, 2 March it was gazetted under item no. 15A.4 (1) that a vehicle which is propelled by electrical power derived from overhead wires shall not be required to be registered and will be exempted from registration. Messrs Eaton, Founder of Zip Zap electric scooters, said the drivers of the scooters will comply with the same duties as a motor cycle prescribed in the road transport and traffic act, Act22/1999 under regulation 343. According to Messrs Eaton, safety is very important when it comes to tourist, residents and vehicle traffic, therefore the business endeavour should work closely to-

gether with all stakeholders to adhere to the traffic rulers for its clients. “We have considered all safety aspects because we want everything to run smoothly, and we even have insurance should anything happen while touring in town. Our tours will be guided by experienced guides who are well trained to minimise vehicular traffic interference. I must also mention that we are registered with the Namibian Tourism Board as well”. He added that the only time they will be exposed to too much traffic while touring on the road will be at the traffic lights near Kristal Gallery and on Theo-Ben Gurirab Street, the other streets which they chose to have very low traffic. Now that the council have approved his proposal, Eaton said he will move into his office, which will be located near KFC in town, soon and once he moves in the tours will kick-start. The Dome Swakopmund raises over N$36k in aid of CAN

The Dome Swakopmund raised a cool N$36 115.85 in aid of the Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN) during this year's Ladies Night held on September 28 inside The Dome's Conference Centre. It was the second time that Namibia's premier sporting and lifestyle facility hosted a fundraiser for CAN after its inception in 2017. All expectations were exceeded with this year's show selling out ahead of time and with the generous donations of the guests and sponsors. After handing over the proceeds to Celesté Steyn from the Swakopmund branch of CAN on Monday, plans for a 2019 Ladies Night have been approved and planning will commence soon. “We are extremely happy with the turn-out and the money we were able to raise for the Cancer Association. The planning and execution were spot-on, and we'd like to thank

everyone who was involved, especially those who made generous donations. We will continue hosting these kinds of events, to assist those in need”, said Arne Putensen, who headed the organising committee together with his fellow Dome team member Dave Hammond along with help from Sugnét Smit and Christine de Klerk from Namibian Adventure Organisers and Mare-Lize Peddie from Tokkies Travel. The total amount of money raised was comprised from a cut of the ticket sales, two exciting auctions of different goodie hampers, a collection from all attendees as well as the proceeds generated by the Namibia Wine Merchants on the night.

Headlining the event was South African comedian Craig du Toit Nel, who kept tears of laughter rolling throughout his hour-long performance with his witty jokes and comments. Du Toit Nel's act was complimented by a big variety of other entertainment, which included a demonstration by three fitness models, a lipsync battle and musical chairs that had a special twist to it. The Dome Swakopmund would like to thank all sponsors for their contributions without their help, this magnificent evening wouldn't have been possible.

Bank Windhoek and Adonai Trust upskills Walvis Bay inmates A total of 86 inmates from Walvis Bay's Correctional Facility took part in a twoweek Money Map training session hosted by Bank Windhoek and Adonai Trust in September. Comprising 38 male and 48 female offenders, the session was facilitated by Pastor Martin Ganseb from Alpha Course Prison Ministry. “The participants found the initiative financially educative. For instance, those who have been convicted of theft, testified that if they practiced integrity in the past, they would not have been in prison. As a result, they promised to never repeat the offence once given a second chance,” said Ganseb. Themed 'Your journey to financial freedom,' the Money Map training sessions cover a variety of topics that educates the inmates on financial, spiritual and mental fitness as they serve their sentences and beyond. Its main purpose is to guide individual inmates to achieve a biblical, joyful and stress-free financial future.

Adonai Trust's co-founder, Sanet Vermeulen, said: “The Walvis Bay training session was conducted and received well by the inmates who expressed their gratitude at the end of the gathering. The Pebble foundation is in place for everyone to contribute and give back to the society and to restore dignity and build confidence to a girl child by providing sanitary pads at Government schools in Namibia. The founder of the Pebble Foundation Bridget Dundee said to girls of Tutaleni High School and Duinesig Combined School during a special handing over function at the Tutaleni High School in Kuisebmond Walvis Bay that the Pebble Foundation's drive creates more awareness of girl-child empowerment and that women have always been expected to keep quiet and know their place and that the world is changing and girls need to be able to speak up when required and giving the girls sanitary pads goes a long way in building confidence. “Too many sanitary pads are cheap and easy to obtain. Yet you will be shocked to learn that many girls do not have access to these basic hygiene products. Menstruation is not a choice. As a girl you are born with it, so we believe handing out sanitary pads should be a human right” Bridget said. Ms Dundee, also mentioned that a girl child that there is no need to be ashamed about menstruating as menstruation isn't a choice and that One woman's fight is everyone's fight. Dundee also revealed that through generous sponsorships to the value of N$150 000 since March this year the foundation had amassed enough hygiene products to supply to all the schools in the regions for the next three months. Beverley Khi-Khoeb from the Pebble Foundation said “Now is the time, don't wait until WE ARE BIG! “Feed the soul- be kind, care for others and let your light shine as many girls have to stay out of school when they are menstruating and this affects their education and that the world does not need more educated people it needs people who give hope and show kindness and compassion to the less privileged” she added. Ms Khi-Khoeb mentioned that the Pebble Foundation team has donated sanitary pads to schools in Windhoek, Gobabis, Lüderitz and Rosh Pinah and know Walvis Bay and that there are still a few schools that will receive sanitary pads. The Award winning artist Ann Singer that is the brand ambassador of the Pebble Foundation encouraged the learners to stay in school and give their best and that they need to study for the exams. Principal of Tutaleni High Vicente Gideon said that not all girls have access to sanitary pads due to their circumstances and are therefore forced to use various materials to soak the menstrual blood, “Research has showed that some girls miss school because they do not feel comfortable during the day and stay home instead” Gideon added. The Principal mentioned that various initiatives have been implemented to change this in Namibia until the Pebble Foundation was promoted to embark on a charity drive aimed at alleviating the need for sanitary pads for the girl child aged 14-19 at Government school. Mr Gideon said “we are humbled by your gesture and accept this donation with humility and that God bless the Pebble Foundation and plea to all companies and business in Namibia to support the Foundation as they will support the girl child in Namibia”. The bold succeed – A moving Beautiful Kidz and Anusa story In 2002, Brian and Pam Kinghorn, a couple from South Africa, witnessed the scourge of HIV/AIDS, how it was disrupting the lives of Namibian families in Katutura and decided to make a difference. Gender Inequality and lack of income made the situation even direr. The Kinghorn couple attended HIV/AIDS and psycho-social courses focussed on vulnerable children to gain insight into the children's plight. They also conducted research to assess the community's needs and it was evident that a place of shelter and safety was needed. In 2003, they located a dilapidated building. After negotiations with the owner, it was agreed that a portion of the building be used free of charge for a period of three years, after which, it would be sold to the Kinghorns. This is how Beautiful Kidz was born - a welfare organisation affiliated to Youth with a Mission (YWAM), catering to the needs of vulnerable children. Three years later, Holland's Christian TV Station, E O Metterdaad, offered the funds to purchase and renovate the building. The organisation opened its doors with 34 vulnerable preschool children and three staff members. Today, it has two community-based centres: One in Katutura and the other in Ovitoto, near Okahandja. These facilities offer education, youth, sport and outreach programmes to the communities they serve, especially the children. Despite having established Beautiful Kidz and being of service to the community, they soon realised that there was still something missing. “All of the children that come to Beautiful Kidz are from underprivileged and poverty-stricken households. Something had to be done about their home situations,” said Anusa's Project Manager, Jennieke Kafuka-Bolier. Taking action In 2009, Anusa, a needlework project under Beautiful Kidz, was created to generate an income for the unemployed mothers of the children attending Beautiful Kidz. Loosely translated in Damara/Nama as 'worthy or dignified', Anusa got off the ground with simple embroidery projects which the women produced at their homes and brought to the centre every week. The finished products, mostly aprons, would then be exported to Holland. The idea yielded positive results but Kafuka-Bolier noticed that customers bought their products mostly because they felt obliged to support the welfare initiative. As a result, Anusa changed its business approach to give it structure, a mission, goals and operating procedures. In 2012, Anusa restructured and entered the school uniform business. The Project started with a total of six women; four on sewing machines while the rest were responsible for cutting and ironing. “We then sought financial assistance from Bank Windhoek with the idea of buying more sewing machines, to renovate the establishment and to build a new shop. The Bank did not hesitate to assist,” said Kafuka-Bolier. To create awareness, vigorous marketing campaigns at shopping malls and community centres around Katutura followed. Three years later, Anusa was able to break even and cover its operational costs. Today, with its 15 fulltime employees servicing 23 schools, Anusa aims to create more jobs and quality school uniforms at a reasonable price. The centre also aims to make a profit to contribute to poverty alleviation and Namibia's education sector via the Beautiful Kidz Project. To gain a competitive advantage, Anusa is strategically located close to its customers so that they do not have to travel to the central business district to buy school uniforms. Apart from this, it offers personal, dedicated services such as fittings and other necessary adjustments on the premises. Anusa believes that its facilities, quality and customer service, are of the highest standard, giving it an economic advantage in the competitive and seasonal school uniform industry. The Project is on a path of excellence and has more stock available now than before after being assisted by Bank Windhoek with a stock control system. But success comes with challenges. Although Anusa is self-sustainable, its profit margin is minimal. To overcome this, it has planned on expanding its premises to stock more products and materials. Making a difference Beautiful Kidz and Anusa have positively impacted people's lives and has seen many success stories. Most of its young beneficiaries are now furthering their studies at various tertiary institutions around the country while others have been deployed into the job market. For instance, Sharyl //Gases, is employed by Bank Windhoek's Emerging Small and Medium Finance Branch as a Sales Advisor. She is a member of Beautiful Kitz's Hope Café, a youth initiative started by one of the organisation's youth.

She regards herself as a Namibian. Sara Pienaar, responsible for sewing, is one of the first woman to have joined Beautiful Kidz and Anusa more than eight years ago. “It was not easy. But things have changed for the better,” she said. Anusa's Supervisor, 27-year-old Geniele Kido, said that the organisation offered her employment. “I am grateful for the opportunity granted to me,” she said. “The youth should appreciate life. If they fail at something, they should dust if off and try again,” said Anusa's

She plans on studying nursing and said that being at Anusa makes her proud since she is able to produce school uniforms for underprivileged learners. “I will never give up on myself. Clothing Presser, Meriam Garises, the mother of Kaurira, said that Anusa has completely transformed her life. “I came here when they took my daughter away since I could not take care of her due to my alcohol addiction. I then decided to turn my life around,” she said. Both of her two daughters are beneficiaries of Beautiful Kidz and Anusa.

Es galt zu zeigen, wie lange man es auf diesem wilden Ungetüm aushält, bevor es einen abwirft. Oversees the development, testing, and implementation of demand creation tools and strategies. Acts as liaison for external communications and stakeholder engagement activities to raise project and Jhpiego profile in Namibia and globally; integrates Jhpiego communication standards into the program; coordinates media engagement and knowledge management, the documentation and development of communication materials such as success stories, photography, brochures, etc. Oversees the development, testing and implementation of training curricula and tools related to demand creation, in collaboration with the regional teams. Thalia ninth Fish Eagle Rally Rudi Bowe

About 293 bikers from Namibia and South Africa participated in the 19th edition of the Fish Eagle Rally hosted by Play Boy Bikers Club in Walvis Bay.

The super Gymnast Thalia Loveira form Walvis Bay Gymnastic Club who represented Namibia at the Youth Olympics that is under way in Argentina scooped a ninth place at the Youth Olympics. Her coach Vesselin Kostin that is with her at the Youth Olympics said that he is very proud and that she did her best

The Motor Bike Clubs from South Africa that participated in this year's three-day rally included CMA, Divide and Conquer, Nyalas, Raptors, Hygna and Immortal Sisterhood. The Namibian Motor Bike Clubs included hosts Playboys MCC, HOGs, Live to Ride, Northern Vikings, Shutz Troppe, Ulysses Namibia, Copper Bullets, One Percenter, Coded, Pirates, Desert Mustangs and Wild Bulls. The Playboys were founded about 12 years ago with one founding member, who is also the president of the club, Rassie Erasmus. Presently we are only 13 members who have found that by working together, we can do great things. The Playboys enjoy travelling together on their bikes. 10 Members are key holders and the other three members are pillion riders. We hold a firm stance that Charity starts at Home and our club has a very soft spot for supporting the elderly. During this rally – without huge cash sponsors to cover costs, we were able to make a fair amount of money which will be held safe until such time as a need comes to our attention, being it a wheelchair, medical treatment or whatever help is necessary. We are involved on a daily base with many people and news of need spreads fast and then we have funds available to help. The festivities kicked off with the Barrel Rumble a special ceremony on Friday night, where bikers who had passed away were remembered and the crowning of Miss Fish Eagle. The Barrel Rumble is an aged tradition whereby the fallen bikers are remembered. Early in 2011 an old Timer biker, Helen Fox, decided to come over all the way from the USA to Swakopmund to do a trip down to memory lane in remembrance of her late husband Ron Fox, this trip lead to the Old Timers Reunion and candle burning event which in turn led to the first ever Barrel rumble event on 15 December 2012 in the bikers office Swakopmund in memory of the fallen biker .Chock Nel provide the barrel.

Following is all the names which had helped to turn this dream into reality: Chock Nel, Ron Fox, Helen Fox, Rina & Hannes Moukarzel, Marion Hubner, Nicho & Alda Dauth. The Old Timers handed over the Barrel to Isabell Groenewald, she took good care of the barrel and keep it up to date. She organized the Barrel Rumble every year at the Fish Eagle Rally. The Barrel is not club related. Tilla Reitsma from Namibia Rubberstamps Windhoek supplies us with the name plates on the barrel. The Saturday a mass ride was held through the streets of Swakopmund and then all the Bikers pushed their bikes to the limit on the drag strip in Walvis Bay and then it was games and fun with the price giving and a church service the Sunday morning. Lollo De Klerk was crowned as Miss Fish Eagle with Penny Burger the first princess and Amanda Kotze the second princess.
