Two days of water outage Piquet Jacobs The Walvis Bay Municipality Public Relations & Customer Service Division announced in a media statement yesterday that a water outage will take place on Tuesday, 16 May & Wednesday, 17 May. The affected suburbs include Meersig, Fairways, Lagoon and Central Town. The media statement reads as follows: “The Municipality is in the process of constructing a 20 Ml portable water reservoir at Mile 7. The aim of the new reservoir is to increase the water availability to Walvis Bay in times of a crisis, for example when infrastructure is damaged due to flooding of the Kuiseb River. The contractor appointed for the project has to construct a new manhole on the 500 mm AC pipe to install a temporary bypass pipe that will eventually facilitate the connection of the new reservoir to the existing network. Therefore, water supply to Walvis Bay via the 500 mm pipe will be disconnected as from Tuesday, 16 May 2017 until latest Wednesday, 17 May 2017. The ongoing housing shortage in Walvis Bay took centre stage recently when shack dwellers attempted to illegally occupy public land in Kuisebmond, which led to a clash with police earlier this week. The municipality urged for these dwellers to remain calm, as they focus on solving the low income housing crisis.
For the past few weeks Swakopmund residents can only guess about the remnants of an old railway line on the beach at the Swakop river mouth, in the vicinity of the old concrete pillars. The tracks, as well as some wooden sleepers, surface during low tide and is a source of big curiosity, especially among railway enthusiasts and those interested in the town's rich history. The municipality in a media statement explains: “Over the last couple of years the illegal occupation of vacant public land by a number of shack dwellers has become more apparent as people are drawn to major urban areas in
search of jobs. In this regard, Walvis Bay has attracted many such people due to its growing economy in terms of increased industrialisation, logistics opportunities, tourism and a promising SME sector, among others. These are in addition to the fishing industry,

Continued from Page 1 associated with rental charges applied to shack dwellers, many have moved out of the backyards and chosen to occupy public land illegally. This has occurred on several occasions in Walvis Bay, with sometimes unpleasant consequences for all concerned. When it comes to the delivery of municipal services, the Municipality has been under huge pressure to cope as a result of an ever-increasing influx of people to areas where congestion has become the norm. Providing services to occupants of informal housing is extremely challenging. The probability of cost recovery is virtually non-existent, yet access to those services is being delivered and sustained, while infrastructure still needs to be maintained. In order to alleviate the housing shortage, Council has identified Farm 37 as a possible solution. Extensive consultations with the public as well as NAMPAB have been conducted. The latter is currently evaluating Council's amended application, and if approved the rest of the procedures would still have to be followed. There are no shortcuts unfortunately as all the stakeholders in this process are required to follow the law. Some of NAMPAB's recommendations included consultations with the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Roads Authority and Civil Aviation. All of these institutions have indicated in principle that they have no objections to the establishment of Farm 37 as a new township. Council's amended submission to NAMPAB is expected to feature on the board's agenda during the course of this month (May 2017). Apart from Council's efforts to address the housing problem, residents – especially shack dwellers – are encouraged to join self-help groups, such as the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia, that will enable them to save money and eventually place them in a position where they can collectively purchase block erven, on which they can build smaller and affordable types of housing. Council remains committed to improving conditions for all and would assist people to acquire their own housing as long as circumstances permit. One of the medium to long term solutions in this regard is that investors are being encouraged to build blocks of flats which can be leased to people who qualify. The cooperation of informal housing occupants would therefore be crucial. These issues must be discussed, ideas exchanged and solutions found. The Council's position is that no conditions should be created where living is not dignified and where a clear transgression of the law has taken place. Council's policy has always been to consult widely and not to accede to threats and demands, which never contribute to any solution. Solutions require a shared responsibility, and even those attempting to occupy land illegally would have to contribute something at the end of the day. It is within this context that Council had to obtain the necessary assistance from the Police to remove groups of people who have recently started to occupy public land illegally. The area in question is part of a new extension in Kuisebmond, which has been purchased by the National Housing Enterprise for the purpose of residential development. Transfer of the said property is to take place in due course. In addition, some erven in the same vicinity that have also been targeted for illegal occupation, had already been set aside for residents whose names appear on the waiting list of the Build Together scheme (which was on hold due to a Government directive but has been revived). The claim that some residents have been allowed by Council to erect informal structures on public land is incorrect. Although some informal structures have been erected by some individuals and their families, the area in question, namely Erf 6488 and Erf 6489, has been sold to a private individual who has agreed to accommodate them temporarily. Council has obligations towards all residents of Walvis Bay, and health and safety standards cannot be ignored. The problem of housing and serviced land is one of Council's top priorities, but time is needed to prove that these intentions are meant sincerely.”

The source of the current fly plague of troubling residents of Swakopmund, especially in the northern suburbs of Mile 4 and Ocean View, could not yet be determined with certainty. The municipality is still investigating the cause and is trying to find asolution to the problem. Speaking to the namib times newspaper yesterday, Raubium Ujaha, Environmental Health Practitioner: Waste at the municipal Health Department, said that no definite cause for the plague could be determined yet. “The issue is receiving a high priority,” he added. While flies are not uncommon, the sudden increase over the past few months, especially in the northern suburbs, have become a health concern. Residents of Ocean View and Mile 4 have lodged many complaints, saying they use insecticides but even these show no significant result. Some residents have drawn up a petition addressed to the municipality in an attempt to have the issue resolved. “The Municipal Health Department has been investigating, especially Ocean View, where the bulk of the complaints emanated from and found that a private school in Ocean View used pig fertilizer on their sports field, resulting in a large breeding area for flies,” the municipality said in a statement recently. Speaking to the newspaper yesterday Ujaha was not entirely sure that this is the main cause though: “When we did a follow-up at the school this week we could not determine that the flies indeed breed there,” he said. In the same vein investigations were conducted at the landfill located east of the mentioned suburbs, but even here measures are taken to keep the fly population under control. “It is a complex issue,” Ujaha said. Normal house fly eggs are laid in almost any warm, moist material that will supply suitable food for the larvae. The female may lay a total of five to six batches of 75 to 100 eggs. In warm weather, eggs hatch in 12 to 24 hours. There are numerous sources for flies to breed, for example; kelp and other organic material washed out by the sea, garden fertilizers, open or dirty bins and uncovered discarded rubbish. A major contributing factor to the sudden fly increase is the warm weather Swakopmund has been experiencing this year so far. March was unusually warm as the first East weather hit the coast in the beginning of that month. April closed very near average in terms of temperature, but was still slightly warmer. It is normal to experience fly plagues during periods of warmer weather in Swakopmund, which usually occurs annually during East wind conditions. In the meantime the municipality has encouraged households to ensure that they deploy ways to control the flies at home. There are various products on the market that could assist in the prevention and repelling of the flies; chemical and non-chemical based. The fly plague should decrease once the temperature drops and the wind picks up.

Water supply to Langstrand and Dolphin Beach will be provided via Swakopmund. Kuisebmond, Narraville and the factories will not be affected. The water maintenance team of the Municipality will also perform necessary maintenance tasks in the affected areas. Residents are also encouraged to continue using water wisely during this period. Remnants of ancient railway resurface on beach in the Swakop rivermouth Erwin Leuschner

For the past few weeks Swakopmund residents can only guess about the remnants of an old railway line on the beach at the Swakop river mouth, in the vicinity of the old concrete pillars. The tracks as well as some wooden sleepers surface during low tide and is a source of big curiosity, especially among railway enthusiasts and those interested in the town's rich history. The railway track is believed to be dating from 1915, constructed by the invading Union of South African forces that annexed German South West Africa in that year as part of its colonial commitment to Britain in the First World War. Another possibility is these tracks are remnants of the 1928 railway line of which the bridge pillars are still visible today. This seems highly unlikely, says those consulted over this very rare occurrence. Readers of namib times recently notified the newspaper about the historic railway line, which unexpectedly re-appeared on the beach after they were lost to the sea for many decades. The old rusted tracks of the broad gauge railway are spread over a distance of about 30 meters on the beach. But we are interested now to get to the bottom of where this railway track originated. According to various documents of historic value collected by the Swakopmund Scientific Society, the first railway line connecting Walvis Bay and Swakopmund was completed early in 1915. The railway line was constructed between the dunes and the beach (not behind the dunes) and featured a bridge over the
Swakop River mouth. The occupying Union force landed in Walvis Bay on Christmas Day 1914. After occupying the town the forces commenced with the construction of a railway line to Swakopmund running along the beachfront. The main use for the line was to optimise the flow of war logistics of the Union forces to occupy Swakop-mund. The first train reached Swakopmund on 11 February 1915, the same day the Union troops took Swakopmund and General Louis Botha assumed command of a northern force that were to push the German troops inland into a pincer movement with union forces that landed at LĂźderitz and crossed the Orange River respectively and now pushing the Germans northwards. But this railway line's success was short-lived, as the Swakop River came down in full flood only four days later and washed away 244 meters of the newly completed railway line. The efficiency of the repair work was astonishing as the line was repaired and reopened again only two days later. In the years following thereafter the railway line running along the river's mouth was plagued numerous
times by the flooding river. Damages to the railway line were reported in 1917 and 1920. Serious damages were experienced again in 1925, when the train service was interrupted for extended periods. Due to these constant damages the temporary bridge over the river was replaced with a steel railway bridge in 1928. This bridge collapsed during the great flood in 1931. The concrete pillars of this former bridge have become a landmark in the river mouth. After the heavy flood of 1931 the railway line was relocated to a point five kilometres upstream. While this bridge was still being constructed the river came down in full flood again in 1934, hindering the construction work. The railway line was diverted and is running behind the dunes ever since. Due to the current location of the old railway track on the beach, which has resurfaced recently, it is unlikely that this one stems from the bridge constructed in 1928. The tracks are therefore most likely remnants of the old railway line, which were washed away between 1915 and 1925.

SWAKOPMUND BREWING COMPANY PARTICIPATES IN WORLD BEST BREW CHALLENGE Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) – a subsidiary of the Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group is proud to announce that on the 19th of May 2017, its micro-brewery 'Swakopmund Brewing Company' (SBC) situated at the Strand Hotel Swakopmund will be the first and only brewer on the African continent to take part in the international annual 'Best Brew Challenge'. The Best Brew Challenge is the World's Largest Simultaneous Collaborative Brew with brewers from all corners of the world that participate in the competition that judges strictly on the quality of the products entered. Initiated and hosted by the BESTMALZ Malthouse in Kreimbach, Germany, NBL Head Brewer, Christian Müller regards this as an opportunity for NBL, and SBC in particular to make its mark on the international craft beer market. Müller: “Participation in an internationally renowned competition for craft brewers will boost both the status and quality credentials of NBL, the Swakopmund Brewing Company as well as Namibia as a country. Whether we win this challenge or not, is not the most important to us at this stage. The opportunity to measure our craft beer brewing standard against the best in the world, holds more meaning to us on this venture. Our brewers will push their limits on Friday, 19 May when we brew the beer which we will enter into the challenge. Such a challenge will allow us to view ourselves within the 'snapshot' it provides and indicate to us where we are now, it gives a concrete base/result that we can test ourselves against in the future. And lastly – it is a whole lot of fun!” All participating brewers across the globe will brew simultaneously on the same day (19 May) after which their products will be sent to the Bestmalz Malthouse for judging on the 10th of July. An international jury of beer sommeliers will do the taste judging, and the brewers of the best rated beer wins a trip for two people to Heidelberg, while the winning beer will be presented at drinktec 2017 in Munich. ACC makes good on its promise The Anti-Corruption Commission of Namibia (ACC) announced in April it will be “knocking on doors soon”. Within days the first arrest followed. The ACC confirmed the arrest of a Karibib town council property clerk, Jafet Garoeb (52) for alleged corrupt activities since 2013. Garoeb is accused of having used his position as a property clerk to illegally sell erven without council's authorisation - in return for payment. Kindly allow me to voice my disappointment in the construction of the speed bumps on the road as we enter Walvis Bay. It is extremely noisy and I can't help but wonder whether it won't cause damage to our cars. It surely sounds as if it is grating/peeling at the tyres. Please, do not misunderstand me. I am all for traffic safety, but those bumps or whatever name you'd like to give to that traffic calming device on the road, is keeping all of us who live close nearby, awake at night. It has become a nightmare as trucks and other vehicles cause a terrible noise throughout the day and night. Surely, there are other ways to calm our traffic... This one is not only loud, it doesn't seem to be effective. People are still speeding! Look at how other towns dealt with the same problem and find an effective, quiet way to deal with it, please. Gemors op strand Gelukkig is daar nog inwoners wat omgee hoe dit op ons strande lyk en ‘n helpende hand verleen om op te ruim waar ander mors. Hierdie vuilgoed is by Badewanne omgewing in ‘n strook van ongeveer 600 meter lank en so 50 meter breed op getel in ‘n tydperk van vier ure , deur Mnr Hans Kaas , ou Swakopmunder en groot kreef duiker. Dis nou vuilgoed van voor en na die langnaweek se kuiery. Meeste vuilgoed is drankbottels en plastiekbottels. Rondom die asdromme lê die vuilgoed want dit is oorlopens toe vol. As ek reg is , is dit Walvisbaai (wie ook al daar) wat verandwoordelik is vir die asdromme. Ons as inwoners van Swakopmund wil net ‘n groot dankie sê aan Mnr Kaas vir sy hulp om ons strande skoon te hou. Hy is ‘n groot voorbeeld vir die morsjorse (behoort jul te skaam) wat so mors. Competition Commission approves Namport-EBHN merger The Namibian Competition Commission (NCC) approved a proposed merger between the Namibia Ports Authority (Namport) and Elgin Brown & Hamer Consortium (Pty) Ltd, which will give the port authority 100 % shareholding in Elgin Brown Hamer Namibia (EBHN). EBHN is one of Namibia's largest marine-industrial and ship repair companies and operates Namibia's only floating docks, Namdock I, Namdock II and the only Panamax size floating dock in the southern hemisphere, Namdock III. Namport acquired the controlling stake in EBHN a substantial time ago and as this merger is believed to be detrimental to competitiveness, the NCC laid down a number of strict conditions for the merger to take effect. The most significant of these conditions are the smallest of the three floating docks will be operated as a common user dock, meaning vessels will only be paying docking fees and will be open to use by any other service provider of choice for maintenance and repair work. Matthias and Lizette Röttcher overall winners of Fly-In 2017 About 20 different types of light aircraft were present in the skies above Uis in the Erongo Region this past weekend for this year's edition of the Fly-In. It was the third time the competition was hosted at this small settlement. Pilots from all over Namibia, and some from as far afield as South Africa participated in this very popular annual social aviation event. In total, twelve participants took part in the competition. It was a fun event and pilots had to put their skills to the test not only during different types of flying challenges, but also on the ground. Pilots had to master the art of shooting a slingshot for extra points. The most challenging part of the competition was a spot landing. Pilots had to land their planes on a marked line on the Uis airfield – the further away from the line the wheels touched down, the more penalty points the team received. Another fun part of the event was a pylon race. Pilots had to fly around pylons set up in the vicinity. The fastest time won. Aircraft were subdivided into classes according to engine horse power. Monthly Monitor: April 2017 April was a mixed month. President Zuma reshuffled his Cabinet in March and fired the highly respected Finance Minister Gordhan – let us call this ZumaGate. As a direct result of the deteriorating political and fiscal position, two rating agencies cut South Africa's foreign denominated official debt to junk status. One would have expected the SA Rand to depreciate, and bonds and listed property to fall in price. Shares should have been mixed – pulled up by a weaker Rand (boosting companies with foreign earnings, such as multinational mines and industrials) and down if they were local (such as banks and retailers doing most of their business in SA). All of these anticipated changes in asset prices did happen in the last week of March. In April they either flat lined or reversed course: The SA Rand dropped, then firmed before ending 5 cents stronger at 13.37 to the US Dollar (USD). Local bonds strengthened in price (the 10-year Government bond yield closed at 8.71%) on the back of foreign inflows while listed property shares squeaked out a 0.5% rise. Shares continued to increase despite foreigners selling, and added a handsome 3.6% for the month, led by Industrials and Financials. Europe, Hong Kong, Japan and the USA pushed foreign shares upwards. If one considers the 5 weeks since ZumaGate, then the winners were local shares and global shares while listed property and bonds were down. Over longer periods the added performances in April have boosted growth assets (foreign shares and local shares), as can be seen in Table 1 below.
Improved growth in foreign and local shares during April boosted our 1year portfolio returns by between 1% (for Cautious) and 4% (for Assertive). What a difference a month makes, if you are well-positioned for it! Conclusion: A leading economist from Deutsche Bank summarised current investment conditions as follows: · Fiscal expansion by President Trump will increase growth, * 25.12.1935 inflation and interest rates. + 23.03.2015 · Deregulation and fiscal expenditure in the USA will be positive for global shares. · USA short-term interest rates are going up, thus the USD will move stronger. WALVIS BAY TOWN PLANNING SCHEME CONSENT: Home Based Business (Cash Loan) Administrative Office ON ERF: 1079 TOWNSHIP: Walvis Bay STREET: Theo Ben Gurirab Street. In terms of the above-mentioned Scheme, notice is hereby given that I/we, undersigned, have applied to the Walvis Bay Municipality for permission to erect/establish a Cash Loan Administrative Office on the site. What does this mean? Firstly, a positive for SA: SA local denominated official debt has not yet reached junk status. It needs two sub-investment ratings and SA has received one from Fitch Ratings. Moody's rating evaluation is still to come. If Moody's comes out with another junk rating, SA local denominated Government bonds will exit all investment grade global bond indices. Global pension funds and other institutional groupings will then be forced to sell, as their mandates prohibits investments in junk bonds. Secondly, another positive for SA: growth is increasing in the developed world pulled by Emerging Markets and a buoyant USA. Consumer and business confidence is up, leading to more spending and investment. Investors are looking for higher returns rather than the negative yields available on many global bonds. Emerging Markets have benefitted from this yield-seeking riskon trend, including SA bonds. Thirdly, a neutral global factor: The joker in the pack is always the movements in the USD. Generally speaking, the normalisation of short-term interest rate as the Federal Reserve continue to raise rates will strengthen the Dollar and thereby weaken the SA Rand. Fourthly, a negative for SA: the political and economic situation in SA has deteriorated sharply. Economic growth forecasts have been slashed to 0%, the Government budget is under massive strain, the national debt is increasing and the nuclear deal will make it even higher, talks about more wealth taxes and of land confiscations are prevalent, corruption is rife, and the ANC is split from within and by its major partners, COSATU and the SACP.
The short-term positives will have to make way for the long-term structural local negatives. This may take a while to play out. The catalyst could be a Moody's downgrade to junk. Then SA will experience foreign capital outflows, with negative implications for bonds, the exchange rate, the budget deficit, debt servicing, inflation, short-term rates, disposable incomes, business investment and economic growth. What are we doing? At the end of March we rebalanced our portfolios to lower our property allocations, we maintained our local share exposures and we increased our foreign asset exposure. This is in line with our expectations for asset class prices. Portfolio Performance: Although markets can be volatile over shorter periods, like a month, they become more predictable given enough time. Table 2 shows the 1-year, 3-year (average per annum) and 5-year (average per annum) returns ending April 2017 of our five managed portfolios. Am Abend wurden um die 100 hungrige und durstige Gäste bewirtet - die Bar des Club-Hauses konnte den Andrang
kaum bewältigen, und somit hatte auch der Club eine außergewöhnliche Einnahme zu verzeichnen. Die Spieler hatten während des Tages viel Spaß und Unterhaltung; an einigen Abschlägen wurden Getränke von Sponsoren gereicht; zwei Golfwagen waren ebenfalls unterwegs, um die emsigen Spieler vor Dehydration zu schützen. An der Atlantikküste,in der Namibwüste Der kleine Tag - ein Märchen für Erwachsene Locker vom Hocker Die Kurzgeschichte von Wolfram Eicke wird in vier Episoden wiedergegeben. Folge 1 Es war einmal ein kleiner Tag. Er lebte mit seinen Eltern und Geschwistern dort, wo alle Tage leben, bevor sie auf die Erde kommen, und wo sie auch nachher bleiben, wenn die Nächte sie wieder von der Erde verscheucht haben. Kein Mensch weiß, wo dieser Ort ist, denn wer könnte schon sagen, wo die Tage bleiben, wenn sie ihren Dienst erfüllt haben? Jeder von ihnen kommt nur ein einziges Mal auf die Erde. Ein Tag ist einmalig. Und so ist es natürlich der Höhepunkt im Leben eines Tages, wenn er auf die Welt zu den Menschen kommt. Voller Begeisterung hörte der kleine Tag Erzählungen von ruhmreichen Taten, Erfindungen und großen Festen, aber auch von Schneekatastrophen, Dürre- und Hungerzeiten, von Flugzeugabstürzen, Explosionen und Gewalttaten. "Es ist ganz wichtig", sagte sein Vater eines Tages, "daß etwas Ungewöhnliches passiert, wenn du auf der Erde bist, damit man sich an dich erinnert. Sonst ist dein ganzes Leben sinnlos. Dabei kommt es gar nicht darauf an, ob etwas Gutes oder Böses geschieht. Hauptsache, du hinterläßt einen bleibenden Eindruck auf die Menschen." "Wenn ich einmal auf der Erde bin," dachte der kleine Tag, "dann wird sicherlich etwas ganz, ganz Großes geschehen, etwas, was es noch nie gegeben hat. Nicht nur ein kümmerliches Erdbeben oder die Hochzeit eines Königspaares. Nein, 100 Könige sollen gleichzeitig heiraten, alle Völker der Erde sollen Frieden schließen und versprechen, niemals wieder Krieg zu führen. Es wird ein gewaltiges Feuerwerk geben, weil die Menschen alle Waffen in die Luft sprengen werden. Auf jedem Stern im Weltall landet ein Raumschiff, eine riesige Flutwelle überschwemmt die Hälfte der Erde, und, und ,und..." So träumte der Kleine Tag unaufhörlich, und es fiel ihm immer schwerer, seinen großen Auftritt abzuwarten. International teams expected at Roller-Hockey tournament The Namibia Ice- and Inline Hockey Association (NIIHA), the governing body of inline roller-hockey in Namibia hereby wishes to announce and inform the Namibia Media of the Inline RollerHockey Event – The Africa Cup to be hosted at The Dome in Swakopmund during the week May 23 to 27, 2017. The inline hockey teams taking part in the Africa Cup will not only be Namibian teams but will also include 3 international club teams from Norway, Germany and South Africa. The Africa Cup, the first event of its kind to be hosted in Namibia, aims to promote Namibia as a possible future host of inline hockey events by
demonstrating that NIIHA can organise itself and creates international interest of inline hockey clubs willing to partake in a
successful event, which is locally organised. Background & History: Inline roller-hockey sport in Namibia consists of 5 Inline
Hockey Clubs, namely Badgers-, Cazadores-, Coastal Pirates-, Kamikaze- and Scorpions Inline Hockey Clubs, with +- 420 members (2017) and organised under NIIHA. In as far as Namibia's inline hockey achievements are concerned NIIHA must mention the singular achievement of the Scorpions Inline Hockey Club from Otjiwarongo, who did not once, but twice managed to be acknowledge by The Guinness Book of Records as the record holders to record the longest uninterrupted inline hockey marathon playing an incredible continuous game for 27 hours 00 minutes 31 seconds in 2013 and for 36 hours 00 minutes and 56 seconds in 2016. (see links below) Fédération Internationale Roller Sports (FIRS), the international body hosting world inline roller-hockey present biennial World Championships, hosted in various countries similar to other international sporting events. The Africa Cup concept was conceived during 2016 when Gilbert Portier, president of the World Inline Hockey Association (WIHA) visited Namibia to inspect and evaluate the facilities available at The Dome in Swakopmund. Though the facilities was approved by the team as a potential venue to host a FIRS Inline Hockey World Championship, Nami-
bia's bid to host the 2018 FIRS Inline Hockey World Championships failed due to the requirement of a substantial foreign currency denominated security deposit. Being impressed by the local facilities at The Dome in Swakopmund the idea of a local event with international participation was proposed and took form under the initiatives of Brian Sobel (Coastal Pirates Coach), Dave Hammond (Sales& Marketing Manager of The Dome) Heike Dedig (former NIIHA Sports Officer) and Trish Hammond (current NIIHA Sports Officer) With the agreement of the owners of The Dome, Messrs Horst Fritze and Paul van Biljon the venue to host the Africa Cup was decided on and the planning and organisation of the event started under auspices of NIIHA. The Africa Cup will not only pave the way for Namibia to become a potential host for the FIRS World Inline Hockey Championships, but also showcase the talent of our Namibian players and the level of development of the sport in Namibia and Africa. Should Namibia be able to successfully present the Africa Cup this year, it is then planned also to be hosted annually and to attract teams and individual players from all over the world to partake in the event, thus promoting Namibia, the
sport and our future venue to host the FIRS World Championships. Status & Current developments: In just over 3 weeks the first ever Africa Cup will be presented at The Dome in Swakopmund, starting on 22 May. The games will commence on Tuesday and the official opening of the Africa Cup will be on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at 18h00 at The Dome. 8 teams confirmed their participation in the event, they are the SAS Bluebirds from Norway, the Taunus Wild Hogs from Germany, a club team from South Africa with a Brazilian guest player as well as the 3 teams from Namibia, a team consisting of the Namibian coaches (all from USA currently living in Namibia) with 3 Spanish players, 1 player from Eritrea and a Canadian, who will be joining forces to try and upset the local National Senior and Junior Men's teams. Some of the highlights of the tournament: 1.One of the most wellknown referees from the USA will be offering his services to be the head umpire and also to train our local senior referees; 2.The Junior players will receive skills training (hereby giving the juniors also the opportunity to be part of the event) by our local coaches, who have agreed to volunteer their time to further improve the level of
hockey in the country; 3.The players in the NARCh Federation Teams and the Namibian National Junior Men's team will also be afforded the opportunity to network with international players and prepare themselves for the upcoming tournaments in San Jose, California, USA in June 2017 and Beijing, China in August 2017 respectively (see below for more details about these two teams representing Namibia in separate events); 4.The President of World Inline Hockey, Gilbert Portier and other important names in Namibia Inline Hockey will also be present during the course of the week. 5.Live streaming of the Africa Cup done by Nautilus Studios – the link will be available on the NIIHA and Africa Cup Facebook pages. NIIHA invites everybody in Namibia and especially those on holiday or visiting Swakopmund during this time to join in this exciting event.
