Eleven-year- old Man saves girl from drowns at Henties rough seas at Vineta Floris Steenkamp
Isaac Chikosi The festive holiday season is off to a tragic start. An eleven year old boy presumably drowned at Henties Bay on Sunday. At the time of going to press the boy's body has not been found. The boy, named Prince Samuel Pietersen and three friends went down to the beach on Sunday for a swim. At one stage Pietersen was screaming for help. His friends swam for the shore and ran off in panic to ask people for assistance. By the time help arrived at the beach, there was no trace of Pietersen. The task is at hand now to locate the boy's body. Community members at Henties Bay said they are left saddened by the incident and their hearts go out to the family of the boy who in the festive period are struggling with this unimaginable pain. The Namibian Police's unit commander for Community Affairs, Warrant Officer Ileni Shapumba confirmed the three boys ran in panic looking for an adult to assist them whilst the boy was in grave trouble in the water. Shapumba cautioned parents and the community at large to keep an eye on children, especially when swimming. Children should only swim under supervision.
A ten-year-old girl's joy as she opens her gifts at the Christmas tree this year, will be heard with extra thankfulness by her loved ones this festive season. Courtney Uiras (10) was rescued from the sea at Vineta in Swakopmund on Sunday, thanks to the heroic actions of a young man by the name of Tom Johnston and the quick thinking of others who among others had emergency numbers at hand on their cell phones. The girl's rescue from the sea is in sharp contrast to the tragedy in Henties Bay on Sunday where an eleven year old boy went missing at sea swimming with friends. He is presumed drowned (see story also on front page). Mr Johnston and a friend Stephan Scholz took children to the beach at the picnic area south of Platz am Meer on Sunday. There are signs which states swimming is prohibited. They warned the children in their company to adhere to it and not venture into the water too deep. “There were many more families and the area was filled with children playing on the beach and in the shallow water. Stakeholders in the midwater trawl fish sector is of opinion the Acting fisheries minister, Albert Kawana, would make a good start if he places a total ban on foreign fishing vessels operating in Namibian waters, if he consults the fishing industry before the Ministry formulates or change its policies and that a transparent system is developed for each and every Namibian to see who has fishing rights, who has quotas and what fishing vessels and processing facilities work these respective quotas. Talk to the fishing industry Continued from page 1 Kawana serves as Namibia's Acting Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, following the resignation last month of Bernhard Esau as fisheries minister over the alleged bribes for quota scandal. Esau and five others have been arrested over the so called Fishrot and faces criminal prosecution. Fishrot has resulted in losses of tens of millions of Namibian Dollar to corruption, has collapsed at least one fishing company and several hundred job losses. Fishrot is also directly attributed to Swapo's loss of its two thirds majority in the recent National Assembly elections. Following the resignation of Esau, Kawana was instructed by President Hage Geingob to take a critical look at the Namibian fishing to eradicate corruption and to ensure the Namibian fishing industry benefits the nation on a broad spectrum and not only a narrow segment of the nation. In watching this new trend unfolding, stakeholders in the fishing industry have commenced communicating with Government through several channels. There were those who approached Gawana's ministry through official means and there are those who want to communicate through the media, in order to keep the public informed. Here are some of the points stakeholders say they wish Kawana can look at in detail and also engage the private segment of the fishing industry where changes can be made: ·Value adding to fish resources: industry players say the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources' policy department is not in touch with reality when it comes to value adding. Current legislation [Government Gazette 6342 of 26 June 2017] only makes provision for two means of value adding of horse mackerel – that is frozen and packed at sea and secondly frozen on land. Legislation makes no mention of the canning of horse mackerel whatsoever, yet the industry was bullied into investing heavily in machinery and plant for canning. “Dr. Kawana must consult with the fishing industry. It is not viable to add value to horse mackerel by canning it. Less than 1 % of the horse mackerel that goes to fish processers are actually canned. The rest is frozen on land and that is as far as value adding goes”, it was claimed. ·Unfair treatment: in the horse mackerel sector, the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources is accused of unfair treatment of fish producers. Fishing operators freezing and packing horse mackerel at sea land their product at N$9, 5 per kilogram. That is the value used for the landing levy. The operators freezing on land has considerable less expenses and lands their fish at N$3, 5 per kilogram. Yet the levy charged for them also uses this N$9, 5 per kilogram value. “We say that is unfair. We also say the policy department of the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources is wrong in this instance and it needs to be corrected”, one stakeholder said. He expressed his sincere wish for the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources to engage the fishing industry at Association level and also at Fisheries Advisory level in order for these issues to be addressed jointly. ·Foreign vessels: stakeholders argue for a total ban of foreign owned fishing vessels operating in Namibia. Quota holders are selling their quotas for a song to these foreign operators, taking away precious work for those who invested heavily in the Namibian fishing industry and those dependent of jobs in the fishing industry. The arrest of the foreign fishing vessel Heinaste was welcomed yesterday and a call was made for Dr. Kawana to take action against at least nine other foreign trawlers frequenting Namibian waters to fish Namibian quotas. ·A transparent system to see who is who in the fishing industry: stakeholders are calling for the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources to develop an online platform where each and every right holder and each and every quota holder, past and present, is published. Additionally, for the total banning of the nominee system whereby political elites' names are not appearing with rights or quotas but instead the names of other people who they appoint as nominees. In other sectors too many people hide behind these nominees. “We need a system where every kilogram of fish caught in our sea can be linked
Second woman breaks the silence on rape by well-known psychiatrist
A second woman claims she has been raped by the well-known Swakopmund psychiatrist, Dr Pieta van der Westhuizen (61). Dr van der Westhuizen is currently on trial in the Windhoek High Court on three counts of rape, one of indecent assault and attempted murder. His victim claims she was undergoing psychiatric treatment when van der Westhuizen allegedly prescribed a cocktail of medication she had to use prior to receiving counselling. At his practice he allegedly raped her when the medication sufficiently incapacitated her. A second woman reported van der Westhuizen. The Namibian Police at Swakopmund is currently investigation the matter. In a dramatic turn of events the State now wants to present this second woman’s testimony as evidence against van der Westhuizen. Van der Westhuizen’s defense team wants the court not to consider this evidence. A ruling on whether this second woman’s testimony will be allowed is expected on February next year.

Johnston and Scholz also ran there and spotted a girl floating in the water, way behind the first waves. Johnston at first assessed the water and then did the ultimate. He went into the water and started swimming to the girl. The girl was already unconscious and after much efforts Johnston could been reaching her and starting to swim with her to land. As they got closer to the beach bystanders also went into the water to assist Johnston who at the time was exhausted from fighting the current and having to prevent the unconscious child from further danger of drowning. In the time Johnston was in the water, Mr. Scholz got hold of emergency services. “I am very impressed with the quick response by our emergency services and the absolute professional manner in which they administered CPR [Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation] and in doing so save her young life”, Scholz said telephonically yesterday. He commended the brave action by Johnston and said the little girl definitely has her life today as a result of his selfless action. Through his actions a family has been spared the dread of a child drowning. With the festive season upon us, it is so comforting to know there are still good in this world.

Walvis Bay Free Economic Zone Global trade enabler DP World has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), with Namibia's Nara Namib Free Economic Industrial Zone to develop a free economic zone for industry and logistics in Walvis Bay to support the growth of Namibia as a regional hub for Southern Africa. The development will help Namibia grow as a center for industrial operations and logistics, creating opportunities and jobs across multiple sectors including agriculture, fishing, automotive and mining. The facility at Walvis Bay will provide businesses with development-ready land for industrial and logistics operations, pre-built warehouses and office accommodation. The first phase will be a gross developed area of 50 hectares, with expansion opportunities up to 1,500 hectares. The parties have set the second quarter of 2020 as the target date for reaching a definitive agreement on the project. Development of the first 50 hectares phase of the zone has the potential to create 3,000 jobs and help attract investment to Namibia of N$ 3.5 billion (approx. US$237 million). Expansion to 1,500 hectares is expected to increase the potential investment to N$25 billion (around US$1.7 billion) with 20,000 job opportunities. Enhancing Walvis Bay as a hub will support Namibia by increasing trade flows with surrounding markets such as Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Malawi and South Africa. Namibia is in a prime location on the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Corridor. As part of the MOU, DP World plans to bring to the project its extensive expertise and track record in establishing and operating some of the world's leading ports, logistical parks and free zones integrated with railways and trucking. DP World has a network of more than 150 operations in 46 countries. Chinese driver arrested for bribery Isaac Chikosi A Chinese national attempted to bribe a traffic office at a roadblock on the B2 road in Swakopmund on Friday last week. Bin Xie (57) was stopped and fined for worn out tyres on the vehicle, when he allegedly attempted to bribe the traffic officer with N$200. Xie was arrested immediately and appeared in the Swakopmund Magistrate Court yesterday.

As usual, I am grateful for the opportunity to present you with my closing statement of the year and to convey a message of goodwill to our fellow residents. After the recent Presidential and National Assembly elections, His Excellency, President Hage Geingob called on the nation to continue holding hands and pulling in the same direction. The people of Walvis Bay, as if they were anticipating these very words of the President, congregated at the Civic Centre on Sunday afternoon and displayed a wonderful sense of harmony and kinship as they celebrated the Mayor's Day of Unity. Many people I spoke to at the occasion and afterwards concurred that it was one remarkable day, which they will treasure for as long as they can. We may differ as far as political outlook and other issues are concerned, but when it comes to unity when it matters most, Walvis Bay's residents have always been able to come together as one big family. A major upshot of these just-ended elections is that there's certainly a profounder need for unity and collaboration to deal with our many challenges. In Walvis Bay, I believe, we are suitably placed to embrace unity and friendship. We congratulate all the parties which participated peacefully in the elections, as well as those who will be representing the nation in the next National Assembly. We also applaud His Excellency Dr. Geingob, on his second term of office as leader of Namibia. At local authority level, we will continue to lead the affairs of our city as best we can, and to represent our victorious ruling party in the finest manner. Although we may not have a long time to conclude our own term of office, we are confident that we can still achieve a lot during the remainder of our tenure. Our enthusiasm to do well has never been more intense, and we believe our customers will continue to receive the best possible service under our watch. In that respect, I also include our partners from the opposition parties who are part of this council. As I have stated earlier and indeed on many occasions, we see ourselves as one big family. Apart from individual differences and the occasional
dispute, the family members will always embrace key principles such as trust, love and harmony, for the greater good of all. This is exactly what we strive to do for everyone who is part of the extended family of Walvis Bay. Although councillors will have a shortened calendar next year, the administrative arm of the organisation will continue with its business as usual. Operational and capital projects will continue to be executed, monitored and reviewed. The consultation process with all our stakeholders will be persevered with, and even strengthened where necessary. Starting in the new year, we will announce some of the major projects that will help propel our economy. This will include stimulating our SME market through initiatives such as SME Aisle, which is an adaptable and scalable product and services concept for the coastal areas of SADC. The concept is supported by Finland, Sweden, Latvia, and Estonia and focuses on Infrastructure, Ship Building, Retrofitting, Certified Training and Expert Services such as safety, surveillance, environment and custom clearance procedures. The idea is to establish linkages between our business sector and businesses from the Baltic and Nordic countries. We will always work in tandem with willing partners, to pave the way for investment in general to flourish, and for our residents to benefit as a result. As we put our trust in God to grant us a peaceful and safe holiday, we hope to come back stronger and more prepared in 2020 to perform even better. We are welcoming all our visitors who will be spending their holiday at the coast this festive season and trust that they will enjoy our hospitality. Let us therefore ensure that they will only have the best of memories when they return home. And lest I forget, let us all make sure that they visit a spotless Walvis Bay. May all our residents and guests enjoy a safe and happy Festive Season! We look forward to being of service again in 2020.

Safety during the holiday During the holidays we spend more time at home than any other period through the year. The risk of injury and other emergencies at home are therefore an undeniable reality. It is true that risk can never be eliminated, but as with all things in life it can be mitigated by being prepared or to try and avoid specific risks all together. Without having to spend your holiday locked in your sleeping room or dressed in a knight's armour, there are a few actions one can take to be safe. · Crime: for most holiday makers crime pose the number one risk, as people are usually unfamiliar with the surroundings at their holiday homes. Make sure that all doors can lock properly, that windows have burglar bars. If windows don't have burglar bars, make sure the windows close properly. Always keep security gates locked, even if you are at home. Never keep valuables in the open. Ensure to lock away or properly hide valuables like laptops, cell phones, games consoles, jewellery, hand bags, purses and wallets when going to sleep or when you leave the house. A bit of creativeness can take you a long way and if you rent holiday accommodation ensure that minimum safety features like burglar bars, security gates, an alarm system and a safe forms part of the security features. Also ensure to notify your short term insurer of your holiday address and the time period you will be spending at this holiday destination. This prevents nasty surprises in the event of a burglary or theft. · Fire: during holidays many households pool together to make accommodation more affordable. That means more people that have to share electricity points in the house to recharge cell phones and laptops. Overloaded electricity points are a fire danger. Ensure to spread the load on the house's electricity points. That includes other devices like hair dryers etc. Fire risks are ever present at fire places and braai's so make sure you don't slack down on you usual instinct when you make a fire at your house. Other fire risks:
candles, lanterns and cooking stoves left unattended. When you use gas, ensure the gas is turned off the moment you are done cooking. · Domestic accidents: Many holidaymakers have their own holiday homes and use the festive period for small renovations and cleaning work. Falling off ladders, being injured by power tools and electric shocks are some of the risks if you don't plan ahead and ensure to use the devices in a safe way. · Swimming pools: children, especially small children, is an ever present danger at houses with swimming pools. If you are renting or staying at a holiday house with a swimming pool, your risk is even higher if at your own home you don't have a swimming pool. People “forget” about the swimming, especially when relaxing and those are dangerous moments with small kids and toddlers around. Make sure to stay alert and set rules (also see in this holiday edition our article about drowning). Other dangers: slipping and falling, diving related injuries and sunburn. · Alcohol related injuries or illness: alcohol poisoning, drunken driving-related vehicle accidents, domestic violence, high blood pressure. These are some of the dangers lurking when alcohol is not consumed with caution and accountability. Always ensure to regularly drink glasses of water when you consume alcohol for an extended time. During holidays people's drinking bouts are stretched over longer hours, as the eight hours work day is now replaced by a day or days relaxing with a beer in the hand or a glass of wine. Drinking water reduced alcohol in-take and also reduced the alcohol related health stresses on the body. Set perimeters. Set a time during the day when alcohol is off-limits. No drinking for instance before 16:00 during any day and ensure to set a time at night when no further consumption of alcohol is allowed. For instance 22:00.

How to ensure tyre safety Check your vehicle's wheel balance regularly. Check the thread depth of tyres every 10 000km. Weekly check your vehicle's tyre pressure only when tyres are cold. Take your vehicle for wheel alignment annually or every 10 000 km. Rotate tyres on every 10 000 km. Check tyre treads monthly. Improperly balanced front wheels can cause wear of the steering mechanism. Don't forget to check your spare tyre and keep it at the correct tyre pressure. Driving with worn tyres on wet roads is dangerous. Good quality tyres have thread wear indicators, which indicate the life of the tyres. Driving with just one inflated tyre can increase your fuel consumption by as much as 4%. Incorrect inflation affects steering, acceleration and braking (include ABS). Tyre pressure is only accurate when a vehicle has been stationary for at least 3 hours. Look after your tyres and you will reduce the impact of fuel emissions into the atmosphere. Blow out risk is increased on hot days and can be lessened by the correct tyre pressure and not overloading the tyres. An overinflated tyre rides only on the centre of the tread – this reduces the grip and handling of the vehicle. Tyres lose pressure when temperatures drop. Without enough air, the sides of a tyre bend and flex, increasing rolling resistance which increases fuel consumption. Look inside your vehicle owner manual for recommended tyre pressure.

Do's and don'ts within the National Parks Holiday activities can have a devastating effect on our environment if we don't stay within the rules set to protect our natural beauty and biodiversity.
The coastal areas fall within a series of contiguous protected areas, namely the Skeleton Coast Park, the Dorob National Park, the Namib Naukluft Park and the Sperrgebiet National Park. By following all rules and regulations, you are assisting in the conservation of our coast and its biodiversity thus ensuring sustainability. The Do's Familiarise yourself with the Parks' Rules and Regulations
and the regulations related to the harvesting of marine resources. Adhere to all the municipal By-laws in place. Obtain a written authorization from Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) offices for entering or camping in all parks and adhere to the park rules. In the National Parks, remain on demarcated routes and do not venture into other areas without a qualified guide. Obey any legal order or
instruction given by a Lawenforcement Officers. Comply with the instructions on signboards, pamphlets or communicated in any manner. Enjoy the dunes between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay with your 4x4 / quad bike / motorbike in the designated 'Off-Road Vehicle' (ORV) area (central and southern part of the dune belt) where a free permit from MET is required. Inside the ORV areas, stay on the dunes and avoid slip faces, gravel plains and vegetated areas. In the Dorob National Park: Motocross bikes or quadbikes are ONLY allowed to be driven on the beaches between Swakopmund and Henties Bay, and on proclaimed roads and clearly marked MET tracks and roads. Obtain your permit for harvesting any Marine Resources from the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR). Ensure to respect bag limits for fish, rock lobster and white mussels. Ensure that tour operators whether in aircraft, boat or car keep a safe distance from wildlife. The Don'ts Do not drive off the road except on demarcated ORV areas– adhere to legal requirements. Off-road driving negatively impacts on the desert gravel plains, the lichen fields, and the breeding birds and destroy the aesthetic beauty of the area. Dune driving is dangerous and were allowed should be undertaken with a professional, qualified guide. Off-loading of quad bike and motorized bike between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund is only prohibited at designated off-loading areas (the Dune Belt between Langstrand and Walvis Bay). Vehicles and people on foot are not allowed in closed or exclusionary areas such as the Damara Tern breeding areas, Swakop River, Lichen fields. No overnight camping is allowed on the beaches or in the dunes without permission from the Ministry of Env i r o n m e n t & To u r i s m (MET). Do not leave your litter behind - use refuse bins and skips provided or take your rubbish home. That also include discarded fishing line, hooks, bait wrapping, empty bottles and tins. Do not drive over vegetation–small animals and vegetation are essentials for the desert ecosystem, your tracks will destroy them and leave permanent scars on mudflats. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach: Either take it home or return it to the sea. Fish and bait left on the beaches attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that predate on other biodiversity. Do not feed wildlife – fed wildlife become dependent on “hand-outs” and become aggressive when no food is given to them. Do not remove, collect, pick, destroy, tamper with or damage any egg, nest or burrow, tree, plant, mineral or any other object of botanical, zoo logical, geological, archaeological, historical importance.

Blue Whale Boutique Hotel and Restaurant The Blue Whale Hotel opened its doors on Kovambo Nujoma Lane, overlooking the lagoon Monday, 19 August 2019 across the stunning Walvis Bay lagoon. Erongo Social Services (ESS) gave away Christmas hampers and sponsored meals to the elderly on Thursday, 5 December at their annual Christmas party. A total of 100 registered special needs pensioners attended. Many of these pensioners take care of their grand-children which places an extra financial burden on them. The hampers were sponsored by Walvis Bay Super-spar. Namib Mills sponsors pasta and maize meal. Jannie and Lillian Theron from the Walvis Bay Convenience Centre (Engen service station) sponsors food weekly. “We want to thank all of you for your continued support and a special thank you goes out to the volunteers who donated soup and bread throughout the year�, said Mrs. Janie Brits of Erongo Social Services. Namibia's First ever Shell Card Drone Challenge Sparkles
The Tony Rust race track on the outskirts of Windhoek was the scene for an entirely different kind of race on Friday, 29 November. More than 70 people converged on the iconic car racing track to witness Namibia's first ever Shell Card Drone Challenge. The event coincided with the re-launch of the Shell Card, a cashless payment option for Shell customers for its petroleum products and purchases from Shell Convenience Shops introduced in 2018. Much like the iconic Drones, the Shell Card is another innovation by Shell aptly depicting the efficiency presented by the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The event was a spectacle that allowed stakeholders to watch from close quarters how a drone operates whilst demonstrating its many capabilities. Organized by Vivo Energy Namibia, the event brought together drone pilots, Namibia Civil Aviation Authority and a very eager Namibian public. A total number of eight (8) drone operators entered the Challenge, which was comprised of an obstacle course that they had to complete in the fasted possible time. Overall winner, Yochanaan Coetzee from Namibia Media Holdings expressed his gratitude to Shell and Vivo Energy Namibia for organising the challenge. “I am happy with the win and am looking forward to the challenge next year. These type of challenges are what the future is really all about and we hope to see and participate in more of these type of activities”, he said. The full results were as follows: 1. Yochanaan Coetzee from Team Namibia Media Holdings, in a time of 01:35.85 2. Ruan De Wet from Team Aerial Solutions, in a time of 02:02.35 3. Zano Van Wyk from Team Stumba Media, in a time of 02:15:26 Managing Director of Vivo Energy Namibia, Edward Walugembe, reiterated Vivo Energy Namibia's emphasis on innovation, efficiency and overall client-focus before launching the challenge. “The Shell Card represents the ease with which we want our customers to access our products and services. The security features on the card are meant to provide peace of mind to our clients while transacting at any of our more than 60 Shell Service stations across the country”, he said. This inaugural event was put together in close collaboration with the Namibia Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), who facilitated the risk assessment, issued Remote Piloted Aircraft licenses and cleared the airspace for the event.

Coastal Toastmasters clubs see new growth 2019 was certainly a year growth and Many of our Toastmasters have gone on to reach greater heights by applying their Toastmasters Training to their everyday life. Matheus H Kangala an accountant at DNL Training Namibia joined Toastmasters in October last year and is now a proud member of the club serving as Vice-President Membership.
Kangala remarked that his journey began with many doubts has his confidence was low. “With English being my second language, I would always forget what I wanted to say when I stand in front of a crowd. But practice makes perfect”, said Kangala. “I can see the results and I can also measure my personal growth; I have become a confident leader.” Toastmasters International is a world leader in communication and leadership development with 16,600 clubs in 143 countries that make up a global network of meeting locations. Essentially, it is an organization that helps people develop their communication and leadership skills. The coast now boasts two strong clubs in Walvis Bay and Swakopmund. Walvis Bay Toastmasters club was chartered earlier this year a sister club to Swakopmund Toastmasters club. Both clubs have made significant achievements this year. Swakopmund Toastmasters Club received the, President's Distinguished Club Award for 2018/19 -the highest level of recognition available. Both clubs also held a combined speech contest Saturday 26 October 2019 where they demonstrated amazing "teamwork to make the dream work" as they selflessly collaborated, sharing the roles as contest officials in order to give the contestants a great member experience! The results this year were as follows: Table Topics Contest: this was won by Rowan van Dyk and Matheus Kangala who came first and second respectively; Evaluation
Contest saw Rowan van Dyk take the lead and Matheus Kangala followed second. The International Prepared Speech Contest prize was also scooped by van Dyk. Because Toastmasters is a world-wide organisation with clubs spread around the globe. If you belong to one club, you belong to all clubs and can join any meeting anywhere in the world. Anyone is welcome as a guest to any of the meetings and there's no need to be invited. You can just show up and no costs involved for guests. Walvis Bay holiday Soccer program Playtime SDT will be running a holiday soccer program at the Atlantis Sport Club. The program that are open for boys and girls starting on Monday, 9th, December will be until Friday, 20th, December from 08:30 - 12:00 and 13:00pm - 16:00pm at the Hub in Kuisebmond for those who wish to continue activities on the artificial football pitch. SFC Soccer Camp The annual soccer camp at the SFC sport ground has stared on Monday 9 December and will be until 13 December at the SFC Sport Ground. The Nedbank Desert Classic
The Rossmund Golf Course will be host to the Nedbank Desert Classic golfing event on 28 and 29 December 2019. Nedbank Namibia has committed N$110 000 towards the event.This will unquestionably be a pinnacle event for golfing enthusiasts. The aim is to present golfers with a unique experience when they step onto the Rossmund Golf Course. In its earlier iterations, this golf event has always been held in high esteem and our intention is to step up the overall experience significantly in collaboration with the Dan Zwiebel (DZ) Golf and the Rossmund Golf Course. The Nedbank Desert Classic will follow a betterball stableford format with a scramble drive with 72 spots available for two-person teams on a first come first served basis. Entries close on Friday, 20 December 2019. N$1 000 per entry, which includes both green and competition fees, as well as top-notch welcoming gifts, halfway house treats for both golfing days and a prize giving lunch for all participants. Swakopmund Motocross December action
The events will start with the Dean Hoffman Motocross Training School for motocross and enduro riders that have goals and are serious about improving will host an intermediate and expert level training for riders 85cc and up from 13 to 15 December at the Swakopmund Motocross tracks. The Swakopmund Motocross and MX Promoters will then host their fourth December Motocross Challenge on 19 and 20 December at the Swakopmund Motocross track for Bikes and Quads. The event will be full of action on both day and will be free for spectators. On 23 and 24 December,5-time Dutch champion, Erwin Robins will conduct training sessions for MXGP certificates at the Swakopmund Motocross track. Robins got his MX trainer diplomas from the Dutch federation and started his own MX school (Budah MX training) is also licensed to do the MXGP certificates. The training will be on technical riding and how to do races and championships All events will be at the Swakopmund Motocross next to the Henties Bay road.
Coaching Clinic and Development Athletics Championship Swakop Striders will host a Coaching Clinic and Development Athletics Championship from 16 to 18 December at the Vinita Sport Stadium in Swakopmund.
For the past few years we took the lead by showing off our athletes not only in our region but in Namibia as well as outside our borders. We know we have lots of talent in Namibia. The problem is that most of them sometimes don't even know it. Some kids stay at home, do not go to school. Some do not have parents and have to stay with relatives. They are afraid to go to the track because they do not know what to do or think they cannot train because they do not have money to pay for the coach. This is the reality of most of our Namibian children. This will be the biggest track and field development event as we will identify the talent and make sure they keep on training. It's time to prepare our kids to be a Youth Olympic Champion. The kids selected for the Coaching clinic will be trained byworld class coaches like Ian Schoonwinkel, Eben Maas Pierre Blignaut Bennie Schlegter and Tobie Holtzhauzen The event will consists of three parts Part 1 – Identifying new talent
This will be done by going to the townships with the track and field equipment. Let the kids try all the different events and identify where the talent is. We will also have a street run with IAAF Photographer Rodger Sedres. Rodger is also working with development in Africa. Part 2 – Coaching Clinic - Swakopmund Athletics Stadium in Vineta Athletics at the tartan track Kids will be transported to the stadium where they will form part of the coaching clinic by all the world class coaches. Individual attention/coaching will be given to the athlete. Namibian coaches will also take part to assist with the coaching. Part 3 – Competition On day three we will have an Open Competition (Free for all) Local, National and International athletes will take part. Other local and international athletes will also take part in the coaching clinic as well as the competition on the last day.

Coastal Equestrian riders in Mauritius Rudi Bowe
Young riders from Namibia registered with the Namibian Equestrian Federation (NAMEF) are on their way to participate in the Mauritius Children Championship. The youngsters are Jenna Gilchrist, Jayd Bassi Hanssen, Nadine Esselmann, Anna Zeta Jones and Chef d Equip Dr Julia Aschenborn will compete against teams from Botswana, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mauritius. "In the light of our country preparing for possible qualification for the next African Youth Games and Youth Olympics, this is an important milestone and will allow the youngsters to gain valuable experience in competition against other riders from southern Africa," said NAMEF president Namibian Equestrian Federation youngsters on Gigi Mathias. the airport as they are on their way to Mauritius
Sailing season kicks off
Bank Windhoek hosts various sport events at the coast this December Bank Windhoek will host various sport events this holiday season at the coast. These events started this past Saturday, 7 December and will go on until Saturday, 21 December 2019.
The 2019 December sailing season will officially kickoff with the Namibia Sailing Association (NSA) Junior Laser and Optis Nationals, Bell Buoy, Offshore Race and Laser Nationals from 27 – 30 December at the Walvis Bay Yacht Club (WBYC). This year promises to be an exciting series for the upcoming and young sailors, who have attended seven training sessions throughout the year. The event caters for those under the age of 19 and gives junior sailors an opportunity to participate in regattas that are run according to international rules and standards, as well as to compete at a national level. The junior classes consist of Lasers and Optis, which are both international singlehanded boats used all over the world, will be from 13 – 15December at WBYC with Catamaran Chartersas the proud sponsor. The Walvis Bay Yacht Club Bell Buoy Race which takes place on 22 December with the first possible start is at 11h00, with boats leaving from the Walvis Bay Yacht Club. The course rounds the Bell Buoy, which is situated just past Pelican Point, and back to the Yacht Club. There will also be a shorter course laid out for junior sailors who wish to participate in this event. The famous Walvis Bay Yacht Club Offshore Race on Boxing Day, 26 December is open to all sailing classes. The first possible start of this race will be at 10:00, with boats departing from the Walvis Bay Yacht Club and finishing at the Mole in Swakopmund. The event is infamous for the course that spans from Walvis Bay to Swakopmund and will offer supporters and spectators accessible viewing points along the way. The Laser Nationals on 27 and 28 December at the Walvis Bay Yacht Club. This event is proudly sponsored by Schoemans and Hemco Paints. The 373km, 24 hours mountain bike race the Nedbank Desert Dash, by the way also the longest race of its kind on the planet, took place over the weekend. It began on Friday at the parking area of the Grove Mall in Windhoek's Kleine Kuppe and ended at the Platz Am Meer Mall at Swakopmund on Saturday afternoon. Nedbank Namibia is the main sponsor of this world class event which is supported every year by international participants as well. Speaking at the prize giving ceremony, Nedbank Namibia Managing Director Lionel Matthews said the Bank took over the main sponsorship of the Desert Dash five years ago. He also made use of the moment to recognise the support received from Indongo Toyota, the Swakopmund Municipality and other stakeholders that makes the Desert Dash among the major and most prestigious o make this annual event The Desert Dash is a testimony of human endurance and resilience. A story of personal achievement”, Matthews said. Adding: “I want to honour the brave women young and old who have participated in this event. Our vision is to be a number one service provider. Our investment in the Desert Dash and cycling in general speaks of our ethos: to do good in our community”. Mathews highlighted the introduction of a seed fund for a Cycling Road Safety Initiative. The moment was seen fit to dedicate the 2019 Nedbank Desert Dash to Ingrid van Wyk, a champion cyclist who was killed in a road accident in Windhoek only days ago. She was hit by a vehicle as she was cycling. The Nedbank Desert Dash donated N$750 000 to two charity organisations and a further N$50 000 to the Coastal Beach Clean-up initiative and Be Seen Be Safe. The Namibian Cycling Federation received N$100 000 for its ongoing development programs. More than 254 men and 20 women riders, all in the solo-class started in Windhoek and just over 150 of the men and 19 of the women completed the race. Registration for the 2020 Nedbank Desert Dash will start in June next year. Entries usually sell out within seconds every year. Konny Looser (29) and his Namibian fiancée, Vera Adrian (26), won the men and women's solo races. Five-time winner Looser, from the Nedbank team, finished his race in a time of 14:42:02, ahead of South African Dusty Day of Barzani Pro-Cycling, who finished in a time of 14:52:52, and compatriot Nichol Jordaan (15:53:06), who finished third. In her first solo, Vera Adrian, of Adrian and Meyer Jewellery, crossed the finishing line in a time of 17:10:50, ahead of second-placed Risa Dreyer (18:14:48) and Irene Steyn of MBM Solo (18:46:11).
