Etosha Fishing sells its vessels

Moratorium on local pilchard catches and less pilchard catches in Angola take a heavy toll

The moratorium on pilchard catches in Namibian water and equally weak pilchard catches in Angolan waters have left Etosha Fishing Corporation, one of the oldest pelagic fishing operators in Namibia, no alternative than to sell its three purse seiner vessels and subsequent loss of nineteen job opportunities on the vessels affected by the decision.

In a statement on Wednesday Etosha Fishing confirmed selling its purse seiner vessels Advance, Morgenster and Prowess, bringing to an end a pilchard fishing tradition in Walvis Bay that stretched many decades. The job losses comes at a time retrenchments have hit both the coastal and national economy very hard. A full statement issued reads as follows: “Poor catches in foreign waters have forced Etosha Fishing Corporation to sell all three of its purse seine vessels resulting in the retrenchment of 19 employees. The three-year ban on local pilchard catches imposed in 2018 has left the company with no other choice but to deploy its purse seine vessels to neighbouring Angola and other foreign fishing grounds in an effort to sustain jobs and the running costs of these vessels. “Low catch rates have compounded the

financial burden of operating our vessels in foreign waters, which has left the company with no other choice but to sell all our purse seine vessels. This means that we are no longer in a position to provide employment to the crew of these vessels,” Nezette Beukes, Acting MD of Etosha Fishing explains. She adds that some of the employees affected are net workers. The three vessels are the Prowess, Advance and Morgenster. According to her negotiations with the recognised union, the Namibian Seamen and Allied Workers Union (NASAWU), officially started in January this year. Formal notification was also issued to the Office of the Labour Commissioner. “Affected staff members were initially informed of possible retrenchments as early as December 2018. We wanted to make sure that our employees are well informed from the start of the process to avoid any uncertainty and to ensure transpa-

rency throughout the process”. “As a union we oppose any job losses, but Etosha is caught in a very difficult position. If they cannot catch, they cannot provide work,” says NASAWU Vice President Epson Kavekuire who conducted the negotiations on behalf of the retrenched staff. He expressed his satisfaction with the manner in which the process was concluded. Etosha Fishing still operates one vessel, the Iona, which was converted to a refrigerated seawater vessel (RSW) at a substantial cost in 2018 to be able to fish in local waters, landing horse mackerel fresh for processing at its cannery in Walvis Bay. Etosha Fishing operates the oldest cannery in Namibia and currently employs 44 permanents and close to 550 seasonal staff at its cannery. The mainstay of its business over the years has been the canning of pilchards for leading brands such as Lucky Star and Glenryck SA.”

Two people sustained injuries in an accident at the entrance to Langstrand (”old entrance”) on the B2 coastal road early yesterday. Three of the vehicles involved were occupied by tourists. Video footage of the accident shows a vehicle coming from the direction of Walvis Bay crashing into a vehicle that wanted to turn right to Langstrand. A third vehicle coming from the direction of Swakopmund was also hit by the oncoming vehicle in the process. Traffic authorities are examining close circuit television material of the crash to determine who was at fault. This particular intersection has been the stage for several deadly vehicle accidents in the past. (This was the second accident on the B2 coastal road this week, leading to traffic authorities renewing calls for motorists to drive safe).

Bisey /Uirab bids farewell this morning Namport bids farewell today to its Chief Executive Officer, Mr Bisay /Uirab, who was at the helm of the port authority for a decade. A breakfast is held in his honour at a local hotel in Walvis Bay this morning. /Uirab has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of the Namibia Airports Company and takes up that role in Windhoek soon. Under his leadership stretching over two terms, the port of Walvis Bay consolidated its future role as import- and export hub in the Southern African trade set-up through the development of several transport corridors stretching to all of Namibia's four neighbouring states. Also massive investment into port infrastructure, both at the port of Walvis Bay and Lüderitz as well as mega-projects such as the current construction of a container terminal on reclaimed land (port of Walvis Bay) and plans for a deep water port at Lüderitz.

TransNamib is reportedly investigating the integrity of the railway line along the stretch running along Neptune Street at Narraville, after residents complained semi-purified water (effluent water) drained from the sewer system into temporary holding ponds in the dunes are seeping under the railway line and it could collapse under the weight of a train. A team of the national rail carrier was observed inspecting the line yesterday morning. That was after receiving complaints from concerned residents. Improvement work to Walvis Bay' sewer network is currently carried out, and it leads to much frustrations among residents and businesses alike. The frustrations are mounting among residents of Neptune Street. Not only do they fear disaster should a train derailment take place if the strength of the line is negated by the water. Trains carrying hundreds of thousands of sulphuric-acid destined for mining operations are passing Narraville weekly. In the event of a derailment, a sulphuric acid spill would take place a stone's throw from the nearest houses and with what residents termed “unthinkable” consequences. Two residents claim they

have contacted the municipality on the matter. However, the outcome of these complaints was not known at the time of going to press. They charge the sheer stench of the water being drained from the sewer system into ponds in the dunes is now reaching a point where they simply cannot take it anymore. Then there are fears of children drowning in the water if they play there, not even mentioning disease. A recent outbreak of Hepatitis E is regarded by these residents as a direct result of the municipality of Walvis Bay struggling to manage semi-purified water in the wake of the upgrade process. Elsewhere in Walvis Bay frustrations are also mounting. Several businesses which include a service station, a bank and a leading supermarket group are concerned over the closure of a stretch of Rikumbi

Kandanga Road in the central business district for the upgrade of the sewer line. “It is unacceptable that the contractor can close the street entirely. If the contractor plans better and work with for instance the traffic authority to regulate traffic our customers will at least still be able to reach us”, charged a business owner this week. At this stage his concern is compounded by the fact it seems the municipality is dragging feet to come to the table and discuss options around the road closure. There are only days left before the contractor wants to close the road. Several residents also complained about the appalling quality of the semi-purified water (effluent) for irrigation currently produced by the sewerage plant. The water has a distinctly dark brown and black colour. Reports are that the water kills off lawns.

The Walvis Bay Golf Club is one example. Officially the Club's management declined comment, but it is no secret that the Club cannot use the effluent water to wet the greens, as the water kills off the grass. The Club relies on fresh water to water the greens and that resulted in skyrocketing operating cost. “We are going through a recession. Even sport clubs feel the pinch because members don't have the spending power as under normal economic conditions. With a reduced monthly income, it is not sustainable for us to for instance having to cope with astronomic water bills simply because the semi-purified water cannot be used for gardening purposes”, said a very disgruntled club member of the Walvis Bay Golf Club recently. Along Kovambo Nujoma Drive at the Walvis Bay lagoon, residents and business operators complain too. The effluent smells and many are too scared to even have their children play on the public lawns in fear of them contracting a disease. Many can also testify of the embarrassing moments when tourists disembark their vehicles to view the picturesque lagoon and the birdlife, only to be confronted instead with an

unbearable stench of human waste. “We appreciate every effort the local authority does to upgrade Walvis Bay's infrastructure. However, that does not exempt the municipality of Walvis Bay to go public over the current situation. The municipality need to explain what is going on and most important what is going to be done to improve the situation. In recent weeks residents suffered. If it is not a fly outbreak as a result of upgrading the sewerage treatment plant, then it is road closures leading to frustrating traffic congestions. The contractor doesn't need to close the

entire road. If he plans properly half the road can stay open to regulate traffic through the construction area. We are also not pleased with the fact that our public green belt, our parks and our clubs are suffering damage as a result of poor quality semi-purified effluent. We feel with the Narraville residents and we pray that tragedy don't strike in the form of a child drowning or a chemical train derailing”, said a resident who phoned the newspaper this week and inquired about progress made with an investigation into the state of affairs.

Groundbreaking of new Hangana fish factory The Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Bernhard Esau, is expected to officiate at the groundbreaking ceremony in Walvis Bay on Monday of a new fish factory constructed by Hangana Seafood Processors. The new factory will more than double the company’s current production capacity of 22 000 tons per annum and will also allow for other fish species, other than hake, to be processed. The new factory is expected to be completed by the close of 2020 and in many instances would count among the biggest and most advanced in Africa. The Minister will be welcomed by the Executive Chairman of the O&L Group Sven Thieme (Hangana is a subsidiary of O&L Group) and Hangana Managing Director Herman Theron.

Three Erongo mines to resume operations Three inactive Namibian mines will be brought back into production in the Erongo Region this year. These are the tin mine at Uis, the Namib Lead Mine near Swakopmund and the Lithium mining operations of Desert Lion Energy near Karibib. News of the re-activation of production at these mines is much welcomed news for the Region's economy and Namibia's effort at national level to achieve Gross Domestic Product-growth in a very tough and challenging world economic climate. Also, in the corridors of the Namibia Ports Authority's head office in Walvis Bay news of the re-opening of the mines were greeted with optimism. The following news report was circulated to Namport's management recently: â€œNotable is the reopening of AfriTin's Uis Tin Mine and North River Resources Namib Lead and Zinc Mine in the western part of Namibia in the Erongo Region.

Veston Malango, CEO of the Chamber of Mines and Energy of Namibia, announced this on Wednesday, adding that Desert Lion Energy was also in the process of redeveloping the Helikon and Rubicon lithium mine just outside Karibib, also in the Erongo Region. The reopening of the three mines has led to the creation of 720 jobs, according to Malango. Last year, AfriTin completed its first largescale blasting of ore at Uis Tin Mine, which

marked the first blasting of ore since the mine closed down in 1990, as a result of depressed tin prices. Uis mine will produce tin concentrate with the Phase 1 pilot processing plant to process approximately 500,000 tons per annum, producing approximately 60 tonnes of tin concentrate per month, while Phase 2 will comprise a planned operation of a 3 metric tons per annum processing facility, producing approximately 5,000 tpa of tin concentrate.

The mine was discovered in 1911 and developed by Iscor of South Africa as the largest hard rock tin mine in the world, which started production in the 1950s. North River Resources Namib Lead and Zinc Mine (NLZM) is an underground mine, located 30 kilometres from Swakopmund and 75 kilo-metres from the port of Walvis Bay, which was previously operational from 1968 to 1991. The project has a current Joint Ore Reserves

Committee resource of 1,120,000 tonnes, with resulting underground in-situ metal inventory of 25,900 tonnes of lead, 74,200 tonnes of zinc and 66 million ounces of silver. According to NLZM, historically, the mine produced approximately 700,000 tonnes of ore, producing over 100,000 tonnes of lead and zinc concentrate, and over 1,000,000 ounces of silver, which would yield revenues in excess of US$100 million at current commodity prices after net smelter returns. Desert Lion Energy is focused on building Namibia's first largescale lithium mine and has been involved in a number of geological surveys and research investigations since the 1930s and has since developed Rubicon and Helikon deposits, which included work on the open pit and underground workings.

The company began production of lithium concentrate from stockpiled material in December 2017. Prior to production, there was approximately 700 thousand tonnes (kt) of stockpiled material and 100kt of fines located on Desert Lion Energy's exclusive prospect licence, scheduled to be processed in Phase 1 of the company's production plan, which spans a 12- to 18-month period. Malango further emphasised the importance of attracting investment into exploration as this will increase the likelihood of new discoveries and the development of new mines. Last year, diamonds and uranium were the drivers of the Namibian economy as they outperformed every other sector in the country, recording a growth of 22%. According to these sta-

tistics, the positive industry growth was driven by production increases of diamonds and particularly uranium, in comparison with 2017, said Malango. Note: Mr Malango has revealed the dates for the 8th Namibian Mining Expo and Conference. The mining expo will take place 8-9 May at the Windhoek Show Grounds as the chamber celebrates 50 years of existence. The Namibia Mining Expo and Conference will feature an exhibition by mining companies, service providers, suppliers as well as Government institutions and other stakeholders. The conference program will feature speakers from a variety of industry players, also covering topics on the re-opening of these historic mines.

Appalling site as municipal worker drives vehicle into flock of guinea fowl Sharlien Tjambari

Residents of Swakopmund are appalled by an incident they witnessed on Wednesday where a municipal worker ran over a flock of guinea fowl with a municipal vehicle, killing and maiming some of the birds. The worker without ceremony chucked the dead fowl onto the vehicle's loading bin and drove off. Residents who witnessed the incident said the driver did this deliberately. Many cases of animal cruelty go unreported and often unnoticed. Residents of Lowenhof Apartments in the central town who witnessed the incident on Wednesday say it was around 11:30 on Wednesday when an adult male driving a white bakkie with a single passenger at the back drove into the flock of guinea fowl. It looked as if the driver was speeding. The vehicle bore the logo of the Swakopmund Municipality on its doors. “From what I saw, it seemed like the driver

deliberately sped into this flock of guinea fowl. The birds are frequenting the area and were crossing the road”, explained one of the witnesses. Adding the driver stopped and picked up two or three dead birds, threw them into the car and drove off”, said the person. The person expressed his disgust at the incident and said the guinea fowl are part and parcel of the area. Ironically there are also clear signs warning motorists about the presence of this flock of guinea fowl. Several people witnessed the incident. Attempts to get a comment from the Swakopmund municipality over the incident, and what steps will be taken against the driver, were unsuccessful. Namib Times will continue to seek comment on the matter.

Pot plants delivered at wrong address baffles home owner Eileen van der Schyff A Walvis Bay resident was left baffled when upon returning home on Monday found several pot plants in her yard. Pot plants she knew did not belong to her and certainly did she not order any pot plants. The person read an article in Namib Times recently about persons stealing pot plants and vandalising gardens in Swakopmund. She contacted the newspaper and appealed for the owner of the pot plants to come forward and for the mystery to be solved. “On Monday morning (8 April 2019) an unknown person may have dropped this plants (pictures were included) inside my yard in Walvis Bay when there was no one home. We did not see, neither can we confirm, as to how and why the plants were dropped in my yard.

We only found the plants when we went home for lunch”, the person explained in a note to the newspaper. The mystery was solved a day or what later: it turned out the pot plants were destined for delivery to another address, but the person who had to deliver the pot plants were confused as to the address and delivered the pot plants at this baffled house owner’s address. The pot plants were in the meantime moved to the correct address.

An der Atlantikküste,in der Namibwüste Worte strömten aus der Seele diverser Lyrik-Liebhaber Swakopmund(sk) Toastmasters Namibia hatte Liebhaber der Dichtkunst dazu aufgefordert, Gedichte ihrer eigenen Wahl vorzutragen. oder aber sich die “Lust am Fabulieren” (Phrase aus Goethes Sammlung von Denk- und Weisheitssprüchen Zahme Xenien) einfach nur anzuhören. 20 Teilnehmer und etliche Besucher hatten sich in feierlich-fantasievoller Stimmung in der Muschel eingefunden. Selbst die fast 90jährige Irmela Erlank scheute den Weg zu ihrer im Jahre 1982 gegründeten kleinen Galerie “Die Muschel” nicht und saß aufmerksam lauschend neben ihrer Freundin Gisi Wittlich. Zum ersten Mal hatten sich PoesieLiebhaber mehrerer Sprachgruppen unter einem Dach eingefunden, um ihr Herz vor einem interessierten Publikum auszuschütten. Ob afrikaans-, oshiwambo-, englisch-, nama- oder deutschsprachig, ob italienisch oder maorisch, eine Vielfalt an gesprochenen Klängen füllten die Buchhandlung. Man hätte den zweieinhalbstündigen Abend um eine Stunde kürzen sollen und die Zitierenden darauf aufmerksam machen müssen, dass sie sich so weit wie möglich an die vereinbarte Vortragszeit halten. Manche Teilnehmer haben ihre Einleitung zu sehr in die Länge gezogen, statt sich ohne allzu lange Vorrede auf ihre Gedichte zu konzentrieren. Den Organisatoren Elrie Pieterse und Elizabeth Strauss-Viljoen von den Toastmasters Namibia gebührt ansonsten ein großes Lob für diesen gewagten ersten Schritt in eine neue Richtung der namibischen Dichtung in ihrer bunten Sprachpalette und dem Versuch, die Lyrik in diesem Land hochleben zu lassen

Pink Panther Der rosarote Panther ist in den 60er Jahren entstanden. Als Erfinder der Kultfigur gilt Regisseur Blake Edwards, der für den gleichnamigen Film einen Trickvorspann wollte. Eigentlich war der Titel des Films nicht auf den rosaroten Panther bezogen, sondern auf einen speziellen Diamanten, der im Film eine wichtige Rolle spielte. Der russische Revolutionär, Kommunist und Marxist, Leo Trotzki, der maßgeblich zur Machtübernahme der Bolschewiki unter der Führung von Wladimir Iljitsch Lenin in Russland beitrug, hat es treffender ausgedrückt: “ We r e i n r u h i g e s Leben begehrt, hat es schlecht eingerichtet, im 20. Jahrhundert geboren worden zu sein.” Trotzki hat damals aber eine andere Unruhe gemeint, nämlich die Unruhe des Krieges, des politischen Machtgerangels. Heute ist das störende Unbehagen u.a. in einer Gesellschaft zu finden, die die digitale Welt als Realität ansieht, einem PC ihr Herz ausschüttet und meint, mit einem lässigen Mausklick die Welt verändern zu können. Wo sind die wirklichen Tröster und die konkreten Revolutionäre geblieben, die Aufständischen, die ECHTES Blut und ECHTEN Schweiß lassen für eine in ihren Augen gute Sache? Nehmen wir ein relativ aktuelles, nach modernem Zeitgefühl wahrscheinlich schon längst wieder vergessenes Ereignis, nämlich den Tod der attraktiven, 29jährigen Elna-Marie Abbott, deren enthaupteten Körper man auf einer Eisenbahnschiene im südlichen Windhoek fand. Ehe überhaupt alle Fakten und die Ursachen des unnatürlichen Todes ans Licht gerückt waren, hatte man auf den sozialen Medien bereits eine vorgefasste Meinung über den “Fall”. Obwohl es hieß, dass ein Sicherheitsbeamter sie vor ihrem Tod stundenlang allein in ihrem Auto hat sitzen sehen, dass sie darin etliche Abschiedsbriefe hinterlassen hatte, unter Depressionen litt und schon einige Selbstmordversuche hinter sich hatte, wollten die Facebook-Gnus es einfach besser wissen:

Und genau das mag eventuell der Grund sein, warum wir depressive Menschen, Freunde in äußerster Not gar nicht mehr wahrnehmen. Es ist ja auch viel zu anstrengend, die eigene kostbare Lebenszeit für Familienmitglieder oder Arbeitskollegen aufzuopfern, die es vielleicht bitter nötig haben - so zum Beispiel die hübsche Elna-Marie Abbott, die in ihrer Verlassenheit keinen anderen Ausweg fand, als ihr junges Leben selbst zu beenden. Aber hinterher strömen dann wieder massenweise die Kommentare der Sozialmedienkartoffeln ein: “Hätten wir doch mehr Zeit füreinander gehabt.” - “Es tut mir leid, dass dein Leben

persönlichen, für Tausende von Menschen sichtbaren Kommentare helfen der Toten nicht das Geringste und beruhigen höchstens ein wenig das eigene, verkümmerte Gewissen. Ja, unsere Unruhe ist eine andere als damals. Wir sind tatsächlich zu degenerierten Automaten geworden, zu Maschinen, die mit Maschinen kommunizieren. Unser Innerstes ist leer, ausgehöhlt und wurmstichig wie ein verfaulter Pilz. Wenn man uns anfasst, kollabieren wir wie ein schwammig-nasses Schaumgebäck. Nein, nein , ich sondere mich hier keineswegs aus - habe ich doch selbst genug in meinem Leben erfahren, wie wir dem anderen die Hand besonders dann zu reichen pflegen, wenn es eigentlich schon zu spät ist. Wir sollten uns alle fragen, wie es um unsere Aufmerksamkeit dem Menschen gegenüber bestellt ist, den wir Freund, Partner oder Familie nennen. Namibia wins T20 series Namibia's national senior women's cricket team was by far the stronger team as they beat visiting Botswana women's team 5-0 in seven T20 matches.

Wayne Hart golf day The Wayne Hart sponsored golf day had 40 players participating in the two ball alliance. With two scores to count on the even numbered holes it was a strange one but worked out well for most. Rumours have it that there were one or two teams who scored nothing on a hole or two where both scores were to count, but enough said on that matter. Koot Potgieter and Nardo Sardinha were the winners on the day with 62 points with Ben Louw and Jonas Niilenge second on 59 points and in third place were Piet van Niekerk and Herman Neethling on 58 points. Nearest to the pins went to Karl Beukes x2, David Peake and Carlos de Gouveia. It was nice to have Jaco Greef and Willie Venter visiting the club. Skai Senior Black Belt Grading

Valdemar Swart, Shane Husselman, Willem Burger, Theresa Swart, Hermi van Zyl, Stephan de Jager, Georgh Shurts, Keanu Stuurman and Wikus Oberholster The successful Karateka at the Shotokan Karate Academy International (SKAI) National Senior Black Belt Grading held 17 November 2018 were honoured at an illustrious ceremony on Friday 5 April at the Dome in Swakopmund. As this was the National Senior Black Belt Grading, the emphazise of this grading was on the senior karateka striving to obtain from 2nd degree black belts and higher. All Karateka that graded had to submit theoretical papers on various subjects ranging from basic fighting concepts to in some instances, for the higher grades, some very sophisticated and complex subjects requiring analysis of the science behind optimising power on fighting techniques through the correct application of body dynamics. These papers had to comply with a very high standard and were moderated until the required standard was met. Once the chief moderator was satisfied, the papers had to be formally tabled to the grading panel. Karateka then had to explain and demonstrated aspects of the papers tabled as well as answer questions from the grading panel regarding some theoretical or practical aspects of the paper tabled. During this phase karateka were also evaluated on ethics, values and character traits. Only once satisfied with the presentation of the papers were graders allowed to move on to the practical aspect of the grading where they were tested on aspects like, proficiency in techniques, proficiency in forms, proficiency in combat, fitness, etiquette and procedure, neatness and attitude, eye position, concentration and self-control. The grading panel, consisting of the five highest graded Namibia Shotokan karateka, was very impressed with the standard displayed by the karateka. The chief instructor of SKAI, sensei Willem Burger, outlined the route to obtain a black belt. He observed that one of the main traits of a black belt that is installed through training is loyalty, courage and the ability to grid ones teeth and persist, even in the face of adversity. These are very important traits given the challenges that we all face in modern times. Sensei Willem highlighted some statistics regarding the achievement of obtaining a black belt.

The word Samurai originally meant “one who serves”. Black belts serve their family and community and protect those that cannot fend for themselves. The black belt also lives by the bushido code (warrior code) and living values like loyalty, honour, courage, unselfishness, fairness, sincerity, honesty and courtesy are of the utmost importance. Being a black belt means constantly developing yourself physically, mentally and emotionally to face the challenges and opportunities that life presents, and then to pass along these tools to those around us so that they all may benefit and take best advantage of all opportunities that arise in their lifetimes. Sensei Willem explained that wearing a black belt does not mean you are invincible, it does mean that you never give up, you are prepared to work past pain and disappointment and do not cave in to your doubts and above all you are prepared to face your fears. The karateka who graded and who were honoured on Friday were: Nidan (2nd Degree Black Belt): Shane Husselmann, Keanu Stuurman, Kyle Davids Sandan (3rd Degree Black Belt): Stephan de Jager, Theresa Swart Shotokan Karate Academy International is extremely proud of the achievement of the above karateka and we are honoured to have these fine and loyal warriors, on the “Shotokan Scroll of Honour”.

Erongo Marine Enterprises sponsored N$20 000 towards the Davin Sports Trust, which brought its total sponsorship of the Trust over the past 6 years to N$250 000. The Davin Sports Trust hosted its annual three-day Davin Desert Cycle Relay with 24 cyclists completed the 260km route at the coast over the past weekend. The Desert Cycle Relay is held to raise funds for the Trust, which aims to build a better Namibia by nurturing and developing young sport stars. The Janine & Suzelle Davin Sport Trust is a Namibian charity organization that aims to build a better Namibia by nurturing and developing young sport stars. Since its inception in 2007, the Trust has invested more than N$2 million in young and upcoming stars in various sporting fields. The Trust supports on average between 12 and 24 sportsmen and women every year by allowing them the opportunity to participate internationally through financial assistance, also contributing towards their coaching, travelling and accommodation costs. Part of the vision of the Trust is to make Namibians confident and competent international competitors, by providing committed leadership and maintaining standards of excellence. The Davin Desert Cycle Relay is one of the annual events hosted by the Trust to raise funds. Each participant is required to pay an individual entry fee of N$5 000 and in addition needs to obtain donations of at least N$10 000 to the benefit of the Trust. Cyclists comprising 24 businessmen raised about N$300 000 and completed a 260km route starting in Swakopmund, from where they proceeded to Henties Bay, the Omdel Dam and ultimately finished at Mile 72. According to Herman Davin, CEO of the Trust, their philosophy is focused on the development of a select cadre of high-performance individuals who, in themselves, are role models who inspire others and who will support each other in the future by giving back to others. Davin said “We seek to 'raise the ceiling' for talented young Namibian sporting talent by giving them the opportunity to excel in international competitions and to live their dreams. Business organisations and sporting teams have long recognised the importance of nurturing top talent. They believe in the idea of 'tipping point' a small, but vital minority of top performers who can create positive change.” He adds that while financial assistance to compete internationally is at the heart of the Davin Sport Trust, the support that beneficiaries receive also focuses on a personal level, where the Trust provides the necessary support structure to develop a well-rounded, high performance individual. Fistball League enters its second round The second round of fixtures in the Bank Windhoek National Fistball League will take place at 08:30 Saturday, 13 April at the Cohen Fistball Club (CFC) in Windhoek. A total of nine teams, divided into two groups will compete for top honours. Group A, will see the hosts CFC 1 battle it out against Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW) 2, Swakopmund Fistball Club (SFC) 1, CFC 4 and SFC 2. The reigning champions, CFC 1, who have been in top form lately, are tipped to win the group, while the rest of the teams are expected to compete for second spot. However, proven contenders namely SKW 2 and SFC 1, are seen to have the best chance of reaching the semi-finals due to their vastly experienced team players. SKW 1 hosts CFC 2 and CFC 3 as well as Deutscher Turn und Sportverein (DTS), will fight for bragging rights in Group B. SKW 1 are expected to advance through to the semi-finals with ease while CFC 3 and DTS will have a tough time against CFC 2, who are in winning form just like their counterparts' CFC 1. The Bank Windhoek National Fistball League will also host a raffle draw on Friday, 12 April at the same venue. The proceeds will be donated to the National team, who are currently preparing to take part in the World Championships Tournament scheduled to take place in Winterthur, a Swiss city northeast of Zurich, Switzerland. The World Championships will kick off in August this year.

Sentrum Winter Corporate Bowles League

A total of 20 teams entered the Sentrum Winter Bowls Corporate League. Namib Park Bowles Club in Walvis Bay is hosting the event. There is exciting action on offer in the fight for top honours in the shield division as the Sentrum Winter Bowls Corporate League reaches the final stretch of the Corporate League. This will take centre stage when the games will be played on Wednesdays at the Namib Park Bowling Club. The competitiveness of the teams and the team spirit were striking. The unity shown in the team's battle dresses with some only in shirts or jackets with their company logos was quite amazing. This made it even more special. Namib Park Bowles Club would like to thank all the companies that entered and also, they would like to thank their generous sponsor who entered three teams for the generosity shown in economically difficult times. The Shield Division: The Gents, Altyd Woker, BHL, Namib Times, Pit Stop, WCE, Flying Coffee Pot, Benguela and Pillpushers. Gawanabwon Sperrgebiet Open The 43rd anniversary of the Vivo Energy Namibia Sperrgebiet Amateur Open golf championship was commemorated at the Oranjemund Golf Club. The tournament sponsored by Vivo Energy Namibia for the 22nd consecutive year was well attended by players from as far as Walvis Bay, Rössmund (Swakopmund), Windhoek, Karasburg, Springbok and Alexander Bay. Players in the A, B and C divisions competed over 54 holes and the D division (front 24 to 36 plus) is definitely over 36 holes. On Friday morning, the weather conditions were anything but favorable, with cold and very strong winds. Later that afternoon it was a little better. The Saturday was perfect for golf, cloudy and cool in the morning and wonderfully warm with a cool breeze in the afternoon. Stanley Gawanab of Walvis Bay has emerged as the overall winner with a four-stroke lead, which is quite an achievement with powerful Likius Nande and Gabriel Shikodi among the top contenders. Son beats father to overall spot Rudi Bowe

The J&P Hydraulics team, Allan and Zachary Martin, participated in the second round of the Namibian Circuit Racing Championship this weekend. Both father and son confidently took on the elements and were ready for whatever the day had in store for them. Race one was a race for the books. Allan had a brilliant battle with his son Zachary before using the power of his GTi Golf, pulled away from Zachary and crossed the line. He came first overall, and Zachary took second overall and first in his class. In the second race, Allan once again showed great sportsmanship while battling the young

Zachary. They kept the crowds pleased with a fantastic show. In the final lap, the tables turned against Allan when the gearbox of his Golf broke and saw the youngster fly past him for a well-deserved win. Zachary won first over-all for the day and first in his class. Allan walked away first in his class with some valuable points bagged for the champions. The annual Easter Drags will be held on 20 April in Walvis Bay.
