The company recently completed a development project, Atenu, at Grootfontein consisting of 33, two and three bedroom, houses. They donated two classrooms to a local school in Grootfontein and a recreational park for the 33 resident families of the Atenu project. In conjunction with the Shackdwellers Federation of Namibia, they assisted in the installation of sewage for another 40 homes in Omulunga, Grootfontein. The company has three more projects in the pipeline for Windhoek, Otjinene and Opuwo, respectively. Akinin recently presented a project plan to the Municipality of Swakopmund, and will in the weeks to come sit down with the Walvis Bay Local Authority Council as well. His objective with his projects is to make use of local services and create a training environment.
No waiver for interest on property transaction late payment - Alte Post Erwin Leuschner The Swakopmund Town Council will not refund or waiver the penalty interest in the amount of N$1.1 million for the late payment of the purchase price of the old municipal building in the centre of town, also known as “Alte Post”. This decision was taken by Council at the recent meeting. The purchase of the old municipal building in the centre of the town has left its new owner, Nathalia /Gôagoses, “financially destitute”. /Gôagoses, who currently holds the position as Chief Regional Officer (CRO) in the Erongo Regional Council (ERC), bought the property in her capacity representing Telne Properties CC. In a letter sent to the municipality in August this year she requests to be exempted from paying the accumulated interest due to late payment. The property was transferred on 18 May 2016. According to the letter /Gôagoses states that she paid a total amount of N$22.1 million for the property: N$17 million for the property; N$2.5 million VAT; N$2.4 million for the transfer cost and an additional N$1.1 million interest. “These situations had depleted all my personal savings and left me virtually nothing with which to continue operationalise the business as a substantial amount is needed to refurbish the property to its former iconic glory,” the letter states. (sic) /Gôagoses adds that as a woman – coming from (a) previously disadvantaged group of society – (she) ventured into a highly fierce competitive environment which is still pre-dominated by ruthless capitalistic business predators and (while) working relentlessly through all these bottlenecks to secure loans from financial sectors, (it) “had both psychologically, emotionally and financially drained me beyond measures, and more importantly, a situation that has left me financially destitute.” (sic) Due to the above she requests Council to exempt her from paying the accumulated interest for late payment. While considering this request it is argued in the agenda of the recent meeting that Council in the past only waived penalty interest payments where Council caused the delay in transfer. This does not apply to this case which is why the purchaser should be held liable. In addition to the above request Telne Properties furthermore sent a letter to the municipality in August requesting that 24 parking bays be made available to them, as was agreed upon and included as a condition on the Deed Of Sale. In the agenda it is states 24 parking bays were identified across the street from the building where the Amphitheatre is located. “The parking bays are made available to Telne Properties CC; upon notification Council can make use of the areas for functions such as the Swakopmund Summer Holiday Fair,” it states.

Well-known residents passed on The Walvis Bay communities mourn the death of three well known residents who passed away in recent days. The first is Mr. Wietz Ilse, who passed away in Windhoek on 28 October. The late Mr. Ilse spent a considerable time period in Walvis Bay where he worked for the Receiver of Revenue. In later years he relocated to Northern Namibia, where he also worked for the Receiver of Revenue. In the latter years of his life he lived in Windhoek where he worked in the private sector. Mr. Ben Brink, a well known electrical contractor, passed away on 5 November after battling cancer for several years. The late Mr. Brink was a partner in B&B Electrical with his brother. A joined memorial service was held in Walvis Bay on Wednesday for the late Mr. Brink and his late wife, Charmaine, whom he lost five years ago also to cancer. The death occurred in Germany this week of Mr. Ernst Jaksch, who for many years stood at the helm of his family business Magic World Video in Walvis Bay. Mr. Jacksch spent several years in retirement after closing Magic World Video for his children to pursue other business activities. The housing and property development sector was selected as one of the key sectors to be showcased at the two day conference held in Windhoek on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Safari Conference Centre. With mass housing at the centre of Government initiatives, it was decided by President Hage Geingob that it be given special attention in the light of investment. “We are aware that deficits remain in our socioeconomic architecture. These include access to decent shelter and sanitation. This presents an opportunity to investors, and we hope that there will be matchmaking between Namibian and international entrepreneurs on these important mat-ters,” Geingob added. In her address Minister Shaningwa stressed the importance of a common understanding of what is meant with 'affordable housing', stating that the goal is to meet the needs of lower and middle income households essentially in a developing

nation where the majority of the population cannot afford houses at market prices. “We are here because we have a shared interest, which is that the housing backlog is a challenge that can be addressed through joint action and it represents an investment opportunity. Globally, urban areas are major drivers of economic growth. However, in Namibia urbanisation is not accompanied by the level of per-capita economic growth. In general terms, this gap represents huge opportunities for investment in the various sectors of Namibia including housing and property development and manufacturing of building materials,” commented Shaningwa. The conference’s main goal was to attract foreign investment and to market the country as an attractive investment destination under the theme: “promoting investment for inclusive growth and industrialisation.” A platform was created to showcase a pipeline of targeted investment projects in sectors such as: housing; agriculture; energy; logistics and infrastructure; manufacturing and tourism. This innovative event was spearheaded by the Namibian government in co-operation with Ministry of Industrialisation, Trade and SME Development. The conference was also a first year priority set as part of the Harambee Prosperity Plan. Minister Shanginwa will be present at a ground breaking ceremony in Walvis Bay today, to hand over erven to contractors to construct prototype mass housing units, based on municipal designs and specifications.

EBHN to ensure 214 Namibians own a home within 25 months Floris Steenkamp
A total of 214 employees of Elgin Brown Hamer Namibia (EBHN) in Walvis Bay will be empowered to become first-time buyer homeowners within the next two years, this marine industrial and ship repair company announced earlier this week. Referring to it as “an affordable housing initiative”, the Managing Director of EBHN Mr. Hannes Uys explained on Monday the Company purchased ten hectares of undeveloped land in Walvis Bay's Tutaleni suburb in 2013. After a tender process the land was handed over to developer Oshipe Turnkey Projects (Pty) Ltd to subdivide and service the land, and then construct 214 homes of various sizes on these service plots. Employees who qualify to purchase these homes can approach a bank for a mortgage loan. The purchase price represents only the cost of servicing the land and the construction expenses. The mortgage holder gets the plot for free. “We identified a serious shortage of housing in Walvis Bay in 2013. We were mindful as a result of the shortage many of our staff members are not in a position to
own a house”, explained Uys on Monday during the signing of the Developer's Agreement with Oshipe Turnkey Projects (Pty) Ltd. The agreement makes provision for the subdivision and servicing of the land and the construction of the houses in a project time frame of 25 months. The signing took place at the EBHN headquarters in Walvis Bay where both the Company and the Developer entertained questions by the media. “The land appreciated in value since the purchase.Our qualifying prospective home owners will benefit so much more from this improved value”, explained Uys. EBHN will not make any profits from the project, but in essence incurred a direct cost of several million Namibia Dollar for the purchase of the land as well as the opportunity cost in the escalation of the value of the land. Uys explained apart from assisting Namibians to own a home and in essence
helping to “build the inclusive Namibian house”, this project also provides motivational factors leading to retaining skilled employees and improve work performance.

The first is the yacht Octopus (right) belonging to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. Allen's other super yacht Tatoosh also called at Walvis Bay earlier this year. The second yacht is Karima (above) which belongs to the yacht charter fleet of Amels. Limited information is available over the occupants of the two super yachts, but it is fair to accept the two vessels are carrying one group of people currently travelling the Atlantic together in style and luxury.

The streets in the new industrial area of Swakopmund currently still have no names, making the operations for the established businesses there very difficult. One businessman contacted namib times, stating that his clients find it difficult to find his business. In turn he also is facing various challenges as he does not have an address. “Yes, that is the current situation,” the Municipality of Swakopmund replied when contacted about the above. According to a statement the municipality is currently busy arranging a meeting with the Naming Advisory Committee (NAC), whereafter new names will be discussed and approved at the Council meeting. “Deciding what to name the roads is a process in itself. At present there are several areas that need to be provided with names and numbers. Once the general plans from the Surveyor General (for older townships) and township layouts are proposed to Council a meeting can be scheduled for the NAC,” the statement reads. During the abovementioned process some delays were experienced with the general plans though, causing a further delay with the meeting for the NAC and the naming of the roads. When it comes to the naming of roads Town Planning proposes the names which are discussed and moderated by the NAC and only then approved by Council. The public may suggest names for council's consideration. According to the statement there are several roads in several areas of town which still require names. Earlier this year some residents of Mondesa also contacted the newspaper regarding a similar situation in certain areas of this suburb.

NAMA’s information session heads to Swakopmund Organising Committee members of the NAMA will be in the wonderful town of Swakopmund on 12 November 2016, to meet with artists based in the Erongo region – as part of the ongoing NAMA information session with potential artists. In an attempt to ensure that all the artists and entertainment journalists are acquainted with the NAMA entry pre-requisites, rules and regulations, and how to enter via online, the NAMA committee will be hosting a two hours NAMA information session to the coastal town of Swakopmund on Saturday, 12 November from 10h00-11h00 at Sands hotel. This will be session two of the three session planned whilst the last one is scheduled for 19 November to take place at the northern town of Ongwediva at Destiny Hotel from 10:0011:00. This is following the initial session which was successfully held in Windhoek at National Theatre of Namibia (NTN) where artists and journalists responded very well to the call to attend the session. The first session in Windhoek had about 80 attendees. “It is the NAMA committee's understanding that there are areas that artists and entertainment journalists needs clarifications concerning the application process. And this information session is aimed precisely at informing them of what is expected in order to get nominated,” said John Ekongo, from the NAMA organising committee. Ekongo said that he is quite contented with the proceeding of the first session and anticipates the same for the next information session to be held in Swakopmund. He further said that the Erongo region after Khomas has the biggest musical activities ongoing in light of recent past including the fact that Swakopmund has twice bid to host the NAMA's and have successfully done so, such is a display that when it comes to the artistic industry Erongo region is a great contribute. He thus urged artists and journalists at the coastal side to make themselves available for the date.

Shafiq Bardien (3) was only a year old when he lost his eye due to cancer, but now he has a chance of receiving an artificial eye to enhance the quality of his life. After an incident where the young boy accidentally hurt his right eye, it was discovered that he in fact had cancer. It developed to a stage where it was spreading to his brain. The decision was made to remove the right eye as well as the nerves attached. Now at the age of 3 years old, Shafiq is targeted with teasing and inappropriate comments. Children and even adults referring to him as the 'bogeyman', it is unimaginable how much this can affect a child. Due to this, Shafiq's parents, Franceleen and Shahiem Bardien, would like to ask the community to take them by the hand and help them get Shafiq an artificial eye, as the procedure along with the countless check-ups is financially out of their range. If Shafiq were to receive his custom artificial
eye, he would need to have a new one every year, due to his growth. He also needs to have check-ups done every 6 months to monitor the cancer does not return. Shafiq, along with his parents met with South African Ocularist, Vida Trümpelmann, in Windhoek on Wednesday for the first time. Shafiq was fitted with a temporary eye to stretch the eye socket for the time being. Shafiq and his parents will need to pay for the eye to be made before the procedure and travel to Cape Town, South Africa, to have the eye inserted. Old Bonusmarkt building gets a new look Swakopmund will soon have a new shopping arcade, similar to the popular Brauhaus Arkade in the centre of town. The renovations of the “Bonus Erwin Leuschner Marktplatz” have officially commenced – an exciting development is on the horizon. The so-called “Bonusmarkt” building on the corner of Sam Nujoma Avenue and Nathaniel Maxulili Street in Swakopmund boasts a very old and rich history. This aspect was duly considered when the developer of the property, The Lighthouse Group, decided to give the building a new look. “I have fond memories of this building and look back on it with nostalgia,” said Lighthouse Group CEO, Quinton Liebenberg, during the official ground-breaking ceremony of the development this week. Mayor Paulina Nashilundo shared the same view, saying that many childhood memories were made in this building. “When developing the town, we must balance the old with the new,” Nashilundo said. Adding Swakopmund is known for its historical buildings and that this heritage needs to be preserved. According to Liebenberg the original building will be renovated but will still have the original look. He expects the renovations to be completed in ten months. “We will modernise the building (and erf) and enhance it,” he said. The bottom floor of the old building will thereafter once again boast a similar store to the one run by Rosemarie Gellert, which closed in 2009. “We will offer roast chicken and soft serve just like in the old days,” Liebenberg said. In the top floor a boutique restaurant will
open, offering a unique view over town. The rest of the property will be developed to accommodate 14 shops. Liebenberg did not want to reveal yet who the tenants will be and what exactly they will offer. The entire renovations and development is estimated at close to N$15 million. “It is commendable that a new public area will be created, instead of just another office or residential block,” said the mayor during her speech. The old Bonusmarkt building was first completed as a double story building in 1913/14. The history of the building was researched by Swakopmund resident Georg Erb. Who exactly built the structure and what its original purpose was could not be established though. In 1926 Peter Max Esselsgroth occupied the ground floor with “Collison's S.W. Ltd”, an importer of wines and spirits. Dr Karl Willasch, who had been the (only) dentist in the district, owned the building in 1931. In the same year Dr Alfons Weber arrived in Swakopmund and became a partner in the dentist's practice. Dr Weber married Willasch daughter. Also in the same year, the owner of Farm Goanikontes, Mr Aladar Hrabovsky, bought the building for his newly-wed daughter, Gertrud and son-in-law, Mr Johannes Blatt. Blatt's parents Johann and Anna Blatt owned a shoe store in Kaiser Wilhelm Street

next to Adler Apotheke at the time. Johannes Blatt returned from Germany where he was trained as artist in Hamburg. After their wedding, Johannes Blatt and his wife lived in the top floor of the building. He had his artist's studio and gallery in the northfacing rooms and became possibly the most prolific artist in the country during that time. He was also an art teacher at Swakop High School. The children of Johannes and Gertrud Blatt, Arnfried and Helga, were raised in the upper floor of the building. Arnfried also became a noted artist. Aladar Hrabovsky rented out the ground floor to various shop owners over the years. There had been a hardware shop and a shop for electrical appliances. From October 1933 onwards Hrabovsky operated the “Bottle Store” under his name, but employed the brother of his son-in-law Johannes Blatt, Paul Blatt, as a manager. Around 1950 Gertrud Blatt inherited the
building and opened an upmarket clothes boutique on “Trudchen's Ecke”. In 1964 the entire building was renovated. Afterwards it was either Colin Bassingthwaithe or Chris van Wyk that started a corner café under the name “Bonus Markt” for the first time. This was taken over by Hans J. Haenisch until 1984 when Rosemarie Gellert took over. Hans Haenisch started the grilled chicken and soft serve that the Bonus Markt became famous for. Haenisch was very hard-working. He worked long hours every day, also on weekends. Rosemarie Gellert carried on in a similar way and ran the shop until her death in 2009. The daughter in law of Gertrud Blatt inherited the building when her husband Arnfried Blatt died in a airplane crash in 1976. Cathy Blatt sold the building to the Lighthouse Group.

Elders and children have fun
Senior citizens of Kuisebmond were spoiled by children on Saturday. Children of the Faith Academy shared the day with the grannies of the town, where they entertained them with various performances in different languages. The elders were then served with tea, cake and a meal. Tears flowed when the children moved among the elders to share hugs and kisses. They told them stories and asked questions. Some elders shared life lessons with the children, most of which contained advice about being obedient to their parents and staying in school. Elders mentioned that they live in a community where they see shocking
things happening among the youth, and were happy to see that there are still children who are respectful towards their elders in life where they are being pulled into social evils. “My hearts is at peace knowing that we still have children who care about us. We never expected to be treated like this. We are lonely people who need this kind of love. Young people forget about us when they grow up. Sending us money is not the solution. We still need your presence and laugh” Maria Lukowa said. Some of the children noted that they don't have grandparents in their own homes. They thus decided on this day, as they usually notice old people standing lonely in their yards, or others trying to cross the streets and walking to the shops. Magano Mutjindi says old people are special. “ We are young and will also get old. We should make them happy, so that we can have their love and blessings. One day, other young people will do the same for us when we get old.” The Faith Academy center is situated in an area where there are many houses with old people and many of the children notice them when they go for extra classes. The center was established four years ago with the aim of keeping Walvis Bay children off the streets and in education. It currently accommodates 90 children from the ages of five to fifteen years. The center has been attracting attention after the children started excelling in education at the town. It is also known for its community service, as the children are equipped with leadership skills. Children of the center decide on two projects every year, including the Senior citizen's lunch.

Grinrod has a heart Grindrod Terminals which incorporates Walvis Bay Bulk Terminal and Grindrod Namibia Stevedores, stay committed to their pledge to support and assist the community of Walvis Bay. Back in 2013, Grindrod Terminals identified the Kuisebmond Old Age Home as their project of choice and along with the Walvis Bay Municipality have been supporting the Kuisebmond Old Age Home since then. In 2013, items in various forms of household equipment were donated. In 2014, a new laundry and store room were built. In 2015, a double living unit was built and in 2016, a single living unit. On Friday 4 November, Grindrod Terminals proudly handed over a fully furnished single living quarter, including a bed and a stove, to the old age home in Kuisebmond. We wish the new occupants of the two new living units all the best and hope they enjoy the new living quarters. Grindrod Terminals are grateful that they can give something back to our dear fathers and mothers for years they have given us. This is a small token compared the long years these great people have given us.

Swakopmund (sk) Auf den Brettern der NPS-Kulturaula ging es am vergangenen Wochenende bei der Tanzshow der BallettIkone Heather Kittel meist ausgelassen zu, sodass man hier durchaus die Redewendung ,,die Puppen tanzen lassen” verwenden kann. Abgesehen von der übersprudelnden Atmosphäre, die den Gebrauch gerechtfertigt, sahen viele kleine Tänzerinnen tatsächlich wie süße Püppchen aus. Die vielen verschiedenen Tanznummern und die mannigfaltigen, beeindruckenden Kostüme sorgten für einen kurzweiligen, unterhaltsamen Abend. Ein Wermutstropfen war die ohrenbetäubende Lautstärke der Tanzmusik sowie das ebenfalls über zwei Lautsprecher übertragene stimulierende Narrativ zur Veranschaulichung einiger Tänze oder zur Unter-

Wie wüten sie nicht wider sich, die göttergleichen Herr'n auf Erden! Doch brauchen sie mehr Raum als ich, wenn sie begraben werden? Christian Felix Weisse (1725 - 1804), deutscher Schriftsteller
drama “ The Piano” liefern. Eine Besucherin meinte nach dem Konzert, dass sie die Show albern fand. Das soll sie wohl in größerem Maße auch sein, was sich besonders in der Mimik von Marcel Dorn und Stephan Weh zeigte. Es ist schon erstaunlich, wie entspannt die beiden Musiker mit den schnellen, rhythmisch anspruchsvollen Passagen aus dem “Libertango” des argentinischen Komponisten Astor Piazzollas oder dem “ Tico Tico” des brasilianischen Zequinha de Abreu umzugehen verstehen. Das geniale Klavierspiel passiert ohne Noten vor der Nase und mit gleichzeitig passender Mimik und Gestik. Das soll mal einer nachmachen! Trotzdem sollte man solch ein fast zweistündiges Konzert mit einer Pause unterbrechen oder aber kürzer halten.
Kurzgeschichte locker vom Hocker Kuriose Zeche
Liebe Leser! Gegen zehn Uhr vormittags langte ich bei der Grenze an. Die Zöllner prüften meine Dokumente und ließen sich meine Barschaft vorzählen. Da diese stattlich war, durfte ich ohne weiteres passieren. Reisende mit schmalem Geldbeutel finden in Paturien keinen Einlass. Ein Stündchen, das nahm ich mir vor, wollte ich noch wandern und dann erst ausruhen; seit dem frühen Morgen war ich unterwegs. Aus einer Stunde wurden zwei, aber es zeigte sich keine Ortschaft. Das Land war hügelig und hatte rote Äcker. Schon wollte ich mich irgendwo am Wegrand niederlassen, da läutete eine Glocke den Mittag ein. Bei der nächsten Wegkehre sah ich ein Dorf vor mir liegen. Es war ein ansehnliches Dorf; drei Schenken säumten den Kirchplatz. Auf gut Glück betrat ich eine von ihnen, setzte mich in die Gaststube und verlangte ein Glas Wein. Der Wirt stellte das Glas vor mich hin. Ich sagte ein paar Worte über das Wetter, über die Gegend, dazu etwas Lobendes über den Wein. Er musterte mich, fuhr mit der Hand über den Mund und ging hinaus. Ich hörte, wie er eine Magd ausschickte, den Bürgermeister zu holen. Der Wein war gut, war schwer, er stieg mir zu Kopf. Dass ich matt war und nüchtern, erhöhte seine Wirkung. Ich spürte ein großes Behagen, das jedoch nicht lange andauern sollte. Noch bevor ich das Glas geleert hatte, erschien der Bürgermeister, ein dicker, derber Mann von sechzig Jahren, und setzte sich zu mir an den Tisch. Er war nicht allein ge-
kommen. Viele Männer und Frauen drängten sich in die Gaststube; mindestens ebenso viele standen draußen und starrten mich durchs Fenster an. Ob ich denn wisse, fragte mich der Bürgermeister, wie viel ein Glas Wein koste. Ich verneinte. Da nannte er einen Betrag, der so ungeheuerlich war, dass ich erblasste. Meine ganze Barschaft war nur ein Hundertstel dessen, was gefordert wurde. Ich erwiderte, der Preis sei überaus hoch. Wenn man sich zu einem Glas Wein hinsetze, nehme man unwillkürlich an, es koste nicht mehr als in anderen Ländern oder in anderen Orten. Der Bürgermeister zog ein finsteres Gesicht. Was woanders gelte, meinte er, gelte in seinem Dorf nicht, und was ich unwillkürlich nenne, sei im Gegenteil die reine Willkür. Warum ich mich nicht, ehe ich das Glas Wein bestellte, nach dem Preis erkundigt habe? Nun freilich sei es zu spät. Ich müsse den vollen Pries bezahlen oder aber, wenn ich es nicht vermöge, dem Wirt so lange dienen, bis der Betrag abgeleistet sei. Das könne, setzte er hinzu, gut und gern fünf Jahre dauern. Ich erschrak. Als müßiger, froher Reisender war ich nach Paturien gekommen - und jetzt stand plötzlich ein langer, harter Frondienst vor mir! Es war nicht auszudenken. Ich leerte das Glas vollends und versank in trauriges Brüten. Der Bürgermeister ließ mich nicht aus den Augen. Die Männer und Frauen schauten mich halb mitleidig, halb lüstern an, und der Wirt machte sich an den Tischen zu schaffen. Wer ohnedies ver-
loren ist, schert sich den Teufel darum, wie tief er stürzt. So bat ich den Wirt, er möge mir ein zweites Glas Wein bringen. Ich wollte mich betäuben, wie ein armer Sünder vor seinem letzten Gang. Der Wirt warf mir einen bösen Blick zu und schlurfte davon; einige Zuschauer lachten. Als das Glas Wein vor mir stand, räusperte sich der Bürgermeister, wie wenn er etwas sagen wolle. Es muss ihm aber jemand ein Zeichen gegeben haben, denn er behielt seine Worte für sich. Die Leute in der Stube und die vor dem Fenster blickten abwechselnd auf mich und auf den Wirt, sie tuschelten untereinander. Ich trank das Glas in einem Zug aus und verlangte sogleich ein drittes; mochte kommen, was da kommen wollte! Der Wein benahm mir das klare Denken. Ich war nicht mehr ganz so niedergeschlagen wie zuvor, aber ich war doch recht traurig. Eine traurige Miene machte auch der Wirt, als er mir den Wein brachte. Dann setzte er sich auf den nächsten Stuhl und ließ den Kopf hängen. Die Leute, die über ihn gelacht hatten, lachten nun nicht mehr. Der Bürgermeister räusperte sich. Schon das zweite Glas Wein, erklärte er, habe meine Zeche merklich verringert, denn zwei Glas Wein seien viel billiger als ein einziges Glas Wein. Immerhin sei der Preis noch ziemlich hoch gewesen, sodass ich mich vermutlich schwer getan hätte, ihn zu bezahlen. Das dritte Glas Wein hingegegen habe eine ganz andere Lage geschaffen. Nicht ich sei in der Schuld des Wirtes, sondern er sei in meiner Schuld - und zwar genauso tief, wie ich es anfangs gewesen
sei. Die Schenke gehöre fortan mir, dazu ein Weinberg und ein großer Acker, kurzum: alles, was der Wirt besitze. Das hörte ich gern, jedenfalls lieber als das bisher Vernommene. Ich nahm einen Schluck Wein, und er schmeckte köstlich. Ob ich mich wohl entschließen könne, des Wirtes junge Tochter zu heiraten? Es sei eine gute Lösung, denn als Eidam meines Schuldners werde ich diesen doch sicherlich schonen. Da trat auch schon das Mädchen an unseren Tisch, ein schönes, wohl gebildetes Geschöpf, und senkte den Blick ihrer dunklen Augen tief in meine Augen. Es verwirrte mich sehr. Die Umstände auszunutzen, widerstrebte meiner Natur, doch der Reiz des Mädchens war groß. Ich fühlte, dass alle um mich her atemlos darauf warteten, welche Wahl ich treffen werde; es ging ja um das Schicksal ihres Mitbürgers. Meine Verwirrung nahm zu. Obwohl ich den Wein heftig im Blut spürte, bestellte ich, um Zeit zu gewinnen, ein viertes Glas Wein. Der Wirt sprang auf und eilte zum Schanktisch; lächelnd brachte er mir den Wein. Die Zuschauer verließen die Gaststube, vor dem Fenster stand niemand mehr, und als ich mich zum Tisch zurückwandte, war das Mädchen verschwunden. Nur der Bürgermeister saß noch da. Doch auch er erhob sich, wünschte mir eine gute Reise und ging hinaus. Ich verstand das alles nicht. Ungewiss, was sich nun ereignen würde, trank ich das vierte Glas Wein aus und fragte den Wirt, wie hoch meine Zeche sei. Er nannte einen Betrag, an dem nichts Besonderes war. Erleichtert zählte ich die Münzen auf den Tisch. So rasch ich konnte, durchschritt ich das Dorf und war von Herzen froh, als es hinter mir lag. Ihr Kurt Kusenberg

Monthly Monitor: October 2016 Market Review: Whilst the calendar year is approaching its end, volatility and uncertainty in the markets are not. October has been another busy month on the markets and political fronts, both locally and globally. Unfortunately, it is not over just yet. The markets continue to scramble for direction moving into November, which marks the United States (US) presidential elections and the beginning of foreign credit ratings reviews of South Africa (SA). All of this, and more, is to happen before mid-December when the US Federal Reserve will or will not hike interest rates. According to Bloomberg news, the odds of a December interest rate hike is high (around 70%), unless Trump wins the presidential election, in which case, extra volatility would be added into the markets and the Fed will need to react accordingly. The SA Medium Term Budget Policy Speech by Finance Minister Gordhan highlighted all the risks faced by the local economy, including weak global growth, severe drought, weak consumer and investor confidence, etc. Higher budget deficits and government and household debt levels can be expected. Economic growth has also been downwardly revised to 0.5% for 2016 and 1.3% for 2017. No details were given as to how the treasury plans on addressing these problems. However, the markets seemed to be more focussed on charges being dropped against the Finance Minister with regards to his alleged involvement in a rogue spy unit during his time as employee of SA Revenue Services. This positive development caused the SA Rand (ZAR) to strengthen. See Table 1 below for asset class returns over various periods:
Whilst the strong ZAR and local bonds have buoyed our safer portfolios over the past year, the negative performance by local equities and foreign shares in local currency terms have detracted from our riskier portfolios. In a 12-month period when only one asset class was able to generate inflation-beating returns convincingly (local cash, as shown in Table 1), it becomes very difficult to have discipline and remain invested throughout the rough ride. Patient investors who remain invested for the long-term enjoy attractive, stable and more predictable levels of return as can be seen over five years indicated in Table 2 above. Conclusion: With a busy month ahead, we await lots of new news and direction in the markets. Short-term volatility is only temporary and investors should remain focussed on their long-term investment objectives. Diversification, a long-term focus and patience are key to successful investing. We urge our investors to not realize their losses and sit tight until the markets normalise. A strong ZAR in 2016 has helped local bonds to be the best performing asset class, followed by local listed property, as shown in the table above. At the same time, the strong ZAR detracted from offshore investments, as is evident in the negative returns by foreign shares in local currency terms. The local share market has been rocked by volatility and negative investor sentiment fuelled by political instability and weak economic growth. In addition, more than 50% of earnings generated by companies listed on the JSE are derived offshore, says Stanlib analysts. Even over a 3-year period local shares barely beat inflation. Asset class returns over a 1-year period (column 4) are extremely weak and call for disciplined patience from investors. Exiting the market at such a low point only locks in losses. Portfolio Performance: Although markets can be volatile over shorter periods, like a month, they become more predictable given enough time. Table 2 shows the 1-year, 3-year (per annum) and 5-year (per annum) returns ending October 2016 of our five managed portfolios. More than 14 million people in Africa have Diabetes and in 2040 this figure is estimated to double. Diabetes in short is a disease that affects your body's ability to use or produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that regulates how the body uses glucose (glucose provide a source of energy to the body). Insulin helps the cells of your body to take in glucose to be used for energy. There are two main types of diabetes: Type 1 (Insulin dependent) diabetes where the body produces not enough insulin to regulate blood glucose levels, these patients would need to inject insulin. Type 2 diabetes (insulin resistance) is where the body does not use insulin as it should, your doctor will give you guidelines on how to maintain a balanced diet, exercise regularly and prescribe medication to aid the body to use insulin more effectively. It is essential to go for your annual check-ups at the Doctor so that diabetes does not go undetected. It is also vital, if you have diabetes, to go for annual check-ups at your Ophthalmologist where a drop will be put in your eye to make your pupil bigger so the Ophthalmologist can have a look at the whole of your retina (retina is the light sensitive layer at the back of the eye). Diabetic eye disease comprises of a group of sight threatening eye conditions that affect people with diabetes. These conditions include diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular oedema, cataract and glaucoma. Diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of vision loss in diabetic patients. In diabetic retinopathy, the tiny blood vessels at the back of your eye get damaged, due to the chronic high blood sugar levels, causing them to leak fluid or bleed causing distorted vision. Diabetic Macular Oedema is caused by diabetic retinopathy that causes swelling (due to the fluid building up) in the retina at the area of your macula.

Toyota Hidden Partner a Big Success The INDONGO TOYOTA WALVIS BAY sponsored golf day last weekend at the WALVIS BAY GOLF CLUB drew a top field of 43 players even though there were concerns that the wind would blow. Let it be stated that the wind did blow and messed with some scores but then there were a few who were able to brave the elements and come in with top scores. The format of hidden partner left at few of the top score in suspense as there were a few scores of 27, 29 and one even at 26. However sanity prevailed and sponsor Dewald Els made the draw, and the winners on the day were Chris Bothma [42 points and a new handicap] and Willie van Zyl [36 points]. Second place went to Oom Pikkie Champion and Gert Olivier junior on 74 points. Third place went to Francois Champion and first timer Karl Beukes losing on the cont out also on 74 points. Special mention and a welcome must be made to David Peake and Karl Beukes who played their first competition at the club. Karl must really think this is an easy game winning a prize on his first attempt. He did however score 37 point on his own. Welcome guys nice to have you with us. Many thanks to Dewald and his team for the great sponsorship, and more so to those who braved the wind to keep the water hole on 5 open for some refreshments. Chris Tempo won the closest to the pin and Luandre Duvenhage won the longest drive. There were a few two clubs but the names were not forwarded so sorry no names, and the jackpot was not won. This weekend is the last for the year of the PISCS Monthly Medal, with Wouter on duty. There winner of winners will be played next month and more details will follow. The STANDARD BANK MATCH PLAY is drawing to a close and the top section draw is as follows: M Roux (finished 2 on ladder) vs P Fox (finished 4 on ladder and cross league) J Barnard (finished 3 on ladder) vs L Duvenhage (finished 4 on ladder) In section 2 there are still a few games that need to be sorted so come on guys get these played so we can move forward. Namibia’s premier Rugby Sevens tournament, Safland Sevens, coming to Swakopmund The second hosting of the Safland Sevens tournament taking place in the beautiful coastal town of Swakopmund on 12 and 13 November 2016 will see world-class Sevens outfits in action, showing off their skills in preparation for the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series due for kick-off three weeks later. BON Hotel Swakopmund, situated within The Dome, a multi-faceted sports and conference centre, is delighted to be hosting the Blitzboks and other participants for the duration of their stay. Situated on Namibia's coastline, this 34roomed, 4-star hotel offers modern, spacious accommodation and facilities. General Manager Dean van Rooyen says, “Swakopmund is so ready for a big event of this nature – The Dome, the co-host, is more than adequately equipped and experienced, and the hotel which opened in December last year provides ample accommodation – there are sea-facing rooms and some look out directly over The Dome – giving you a bird's eye view of the action.” The tournament will follow a festival-type
format this year with fun for the whole family in store, maximizing the use of The Domes indoor complex, and outside areas. A club competition for teams from Namibia and around the country will also take place and to give the youth an opportunity to shine, a School Sevens tournament. There will also be a Rugby Skills Development programme with over 400 children participating. Kallie van der Merwe of Safland said in an interview that team sport is an excellent way of promoting small-group dynamics that is essential in business and life in general and that, as Namibia has the potential to be strong contenders in international Sevens Rugby, and this tournament will be an excellent showcase for up-and-coming Namibian talent. The Safland Sevens tournament will pit our Namibian Sevens side against the likes of the famous Blitzboks and teams from Uganda, Poland, Germany, Italy, the United States of America, Argentina, Germany, Kenya and Zimbabwe. This is a wonderful opportunity to witness a world-class tournament in worldclass surroundings.

That is in final preparation for the Safland Sevens tournament that started in Swakopmund today. The tournament is held at the sports fields at the Dome Swakopmund and lasts until Sunday. Ten international teams including Namibia, 20 schools teams and 6 club teams will be in action tomorrow and is not to be missed. The Safland Sevens is Namibia’s premier rugby sevens tournament and is now in its second year. (Also see news release on page 31).
Sparta the place to be for international cricket action this weekend A Coastal Under 25 cricket team, comprising top players from the five coastal cricket clubs, engaged the United Kingdom's Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in a T20 Match at the Sparta cricket field yesterday afternoon. This was the first of a series of exciting international cricket games to be played here in Walvis Bay over the weekend as well as next weekend. All games are at the Sparta cricket field which has the only world standard pitch in Namibia. MMC plays a Coastal Invitational XI Team tomorrow (Saturday 12 November) in a one day series (50 overs) and on Sunday this British team engages Namibia's national team, the Welwitschias also in a one day match. The Welwitschias engage South Africa's Natal at Sparta next weekend in a league match.
