Major road safety Centre for Arandis Arandis will soon host a fully functional emergency response and road traffic management centre. The centre, officially known as the Arandis Emergency Response and Traffic Management Centre (AERTMC), is now under construction at a total price tag of N$127 million. The ground-breaking ceremony took place at Arandis recently and will play a revolutionary role for road safety between Swakopmund and Usakos, some 140km east of the holiday town. Studies show the most accidents on the B2 highway occurs within a radius close to Arandis, in both directions to Swakopmund and Usakos. The Arandis Town Council, in conjunction with the National Road Safety Council and Erongo Regional Council, took action and soon the idea was born of AERTMC. Once completed, AERTMC will form the backbone of a traffic safety network along the B2 highway between Swakopmund and Usakos. That would include close circuit television along the route, permanently placed speed cameras, hi-tech devices that can weigh vehicles on the move, as well as electronic information signs that warns motorists on traffic hazards ahead. The Centre will also be the pivot for first responders to accident scenes and to transport the injured to medical facilities within shorter response times. The Deputy Minister of Works and Transport, Veikko Nekundi, during the ground-breaking said road safety remains one of the major concerns of the Namibian Government. Road accidents cost several hundred lives every year. It leaves survivors of accidents often handicapped afterwards or people requires extended periods to recover from injuries. It comes at a huge cost. It deprives people of their loved ones and it robs the country of productive people. “Contemporary records show that on average we lose about 600 lives per year to road accidents. This translates into about 27 lives per hundred thousand inhabitants. As a small country, in terms of demographics, this is a figure our economy cannot afford in perpetuity”, explained Nekundi. According to Nekunde the B2 road that stretch from Arandis to Usakos or Arandis to Swakopmund has been a thorn in the flesh for years and many people have succumbed to injuries sustained in road accidents while being transported for medical treatment. “This part of the road contains sections that are commonly referred to as blackspots. These are section that characterised by high frequencies of high velocity and high impact crashes. Two of these are situated around ten KM east and 30 KM west of Arandis” Nekunde added. Nekunde added: “You will agree with me that this is a huge milestone in the country's road safety history. Looking back, the Arandis Town Council in 2016 formally invited the National Road Safety Council of Namibia to consider partnering with them in the development and management of its envisaged emergency centre. Hence, I am delighted to state that this initiative has finally become a reality”. “I call upon all, particularly those tasked with the responsibility to implement public projects on which the lives of our people depend, to do so with a sense of urgency” Nekunde said. Nekunde concluded the centre would ensure peace of mind to all motorists using the road, as it will be monitored 24/7, in order to try and prevent accidents from occurring, render improved emergency response and ensure road user compliance through use of new state-of-the-art technology.

Corruption destroyed public’s trust in Walvis Bay municipality - AR The Affirmative Reposition (AR) movement in a statement on Wednesday said the municipality of Walvis Bay’s poor state of affairs can mostly be laid at the doorstep of corruption. The public statement follows after the Anti-Corruption Commission of Namibia on the same day confiscated computers and other data storage devices of three prominent officials, as part of yet another investigation into corruption at the local authority. AR says corruption in the municipality is perpetuated by officials who compromised their positions of trust to serve self-interest and serve the self-interest and greed of individuals in the private sector. The state of affairs led to the erosion of the public of Walvis Bay’s trust.

Mayor's Festive Season message Although this festive season is not marked by the usual cheer that we are used to, we still need to be grateful that we have come this far. This past year has indeed been an eventful year, characterised by many challenges. However, our community has been drawn together and stood as one during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our battle with this virus is not over as it remains a constant threat. Let us ensure that we continue to protect ourselves and our loved ones against COVID-19 by practising basic hygiene, social distancing and wearing masks when interacting with others. I take this opportunity to thank the citizens of Walvis Bay for their support and co-operation during the year, even during difficult times. The cooperation we received especially through donations during the lockdown and the tragic fire incident at Otweya (previously known as Twaloloka) was a true testament of what we can achieve if we join hands. 6 Ways to Avoid Overspending this Season 2 December 2020: As the holiday cheer takes hold, we're bound to be tempted to spend more than we should, but having fun shouldn't mean overspending. Budgets may seem restrictive and not part of the festive picture you have for your holiday, but ultimately, they're tools to help you live better. 'We know that consumers spent more on their credit cards in December than any other month of the year – most of it on luxury goods and entertainment. Whether you're staying home or going away, if you're not keeping an eye on your expenses, overboard is where you're headed' says Elzita Beukes, FNB Communications Manager. Here are 6 ways to avoid overspending this holiday: 1. Don't leave money lying around (over and above what you've budgeted) in your bank account. Move any additional cash into your investment account or savings pocket – that way you won't accidently spend it and you can move it back when January comes knocking. 2. Avoid lengthy trips to the mall. Between all the specials and holiday jingles, it's very easy to open your wallet. 'Do your festive season shopping alone and stick to your list,' suggests Beukes. This will give you less reason to be distracted from your task. 3. Limit convenience spending. The holidays throw us out of our normal routine. With a festive atmosphere at home, activities to plan and social gatherings, ordering takeaways might seem like a good idea – but it's not good for your waist
or your wallet. 4. Rethink gifts. Presents should never be the reason you don't stick to your budget or go into debt. Spend time thinking about how to give meaningful gifts
rather than the latest and greatest that cost a fortune. 'If your child is set on an expensive toy, electronic device or item of clothing, rather than giving in and purchasing it, sit down with them and

New Era for Walvis Bay Yacht Club
The bar at the Walvis Bay Yacht Club has recently been renamed the Oskar (Oswald) Krauer Bar (now referred to as the “OK Bar�). Otto Krauer, a committee member at the time, took it on himself to construct the yacht club's very first bar in the early 1960's. A function took place on 24 November to officiate the OK Bar. At the same time, the Walvis Bay Yacht Club also officially unveiled its revamped interior, which was a task left to the energy and innovation of John and Katja Lund. The Walvis Bay Yacht Club was Commissioned in March 1965. The Club soon took its place among locals and visitors as a prime seaside retreat. The original main building was relocated from the harbour to the current location in 1963, followed by the construction of the bridge in August of the same year, and the completed Rotunda in 1967. The original Oskar Krauer bar was extended in the latter half of the 1990's/early 2000's. Thanks to successive Yacht Club Committees, led by their respective Commodores, the Walvis Bay Yacht
Club today remains one of the favourite seaside retreats in Walvis Bay. The current serving Commodore, Theo Schoeman, in his keynote address during the inauguration function admitted there were years where the Yacht Club experienced low points. Partly as a result of financial mismanagement and also members who preferred to maintain the club as personal domains, instead of promoting its status as a facility that can be enjoyed by all residents and visitors. The opening function was well attended by locals, and the presence was also observed of Namport's newly appointed Chief Executive Officer, Mr Andrew Kanime. Several former Commodores were also present. The OK Bar and the rest of the amenities and features added to the Walvis Bay Yacht Club truly makes it a place not to be missed. With the pleasant summer weather approaching, and the festive season waiting around the corner, see you at the OK Bar.

Mayor's Day of Unity Hundreds of Walvis Bay residents last Sunday flocked to the municipal lawn to celebrate the Mayor's Day of Unity that officially mark the beginning of the festive season. Newly elected mayor of Walvis Bay Trevino Forbes entrusted the actual switching on of the Christmas lights to junior mayor Kristine Shetunyenga. The mayor called on residents to use this occasion to start adopting and enjoying the thrill of giving time, thoughts and ideas, and a helping hand to those less fortunate. Forbes said “Let us not forget to continue to practice basic hygiene and continue wearing our masks as the COVID-19 pandemic is still active. We all need to be cautious and adhere to the rules of the road at all times.

Langstrand Beach Clean-up The Beach Clean-up, organised by Eric's Cove and Autohaus Swakopmund, made this day a huge success. Langstrand residents and a team of Autohaus Swakopmund joined in a fun packed day filled with cleaning up while enjoying a relaxing walk on the beach. Residents were invited for drinks afterwards at Eric's Cove. Eric's Cove and Autohaus Swakopmund would like to thank Coca Cola for sponsoring the ice cold refreshing Bonaqua bottled water, the Municipality of Walvis Bay for supplying the black bags. “Twelve refuse drums were placed all along the beach and residents and tourists alike are encouraged to make use of these drums. The cleaning of the beach and dunes was done in preparation of the festive season which is upon us. We strive to show off our beautiful country to our guests and visitors. We urge residents as well as tourists to keep our desert and beaches clean. Please do not litter. Use the drums on the beach and dunes.

Langstrand Dunes Clean-up
Langstrand residents met at the entrance of Extension 2, on Saturday morning, 28 November for a Dunes Clean-up day. After a morning of cleaning up the dunes, residents came together on the beach between the Tidal Pools and Dolfynstrand for a braai on the beach. The Dune Clean-up was organised by Langstrand Neighborhood Watch who thanks the community for attending and helping. The morning brought in approximately 140 big bags of rubbish. The Langstrand Neighborhood Watch would like to thank Guan's Packaging for the refuse bags and boxes, Namibia Breweries for the water, Hangana, for the ice to keep the water cool, Thomas Wolf Rental Support Services for the skips, Louis Taljaard for N$500 and MC Smidt Tuindienste for the N$1 000 sponsor. A thank you also goes out to Namibian Lubricants for the 3 large drums, Yeti Cool Panels for the toilets, BBS for the gloves and Anesca and Sandpiper Dunes for the extra crew.

Swakopmund Mayor's Christmas Message First and foremost, on behalf of the Swakopmund Council they are safe and sound and my own behalf, I hereby wish all the residents and d u r i n g t h e e n t i r e season. The Namibian visitors of our town, a blessed and jovial festive season. We can all attest that this year has been an extreme challenge for most of us with the surfacing of the COVID-19 pandemic. This took us all by shock as most people were unable to travel and visit the coastal towns and around the country; jobs and income was cut and sadly, lives were lost as a result of this pandemic. However, despite the negative impact which resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic, the response from our community members was extremely remarkable as we showed the culture of standing together and being there for one another. This was one of my key take away lessons in this pandemic that we can strive to combat, not only the pandemic but any challenge
that comes our way, if we do it in unison and solidarity. My hope is that we continue to stand in unity regardless of any circumstances that we may be faced with. I know the tourism industry has been affected enormously due to the state of emergency and subsequent lockdown as a consequence of the corona virus. Fortunately, we are now able to travel and we extend a warm welcome to our visitors to come and explore the beauty that Swakopmund has to offer. Please continue to maintain the social distance, sanitise your hands and wear your face masks when in social gatherings. Dear residents and visitors, Swakopmund has been one of the most preferred holiday destinations as visitors from all walks of life visit
our town. The influx of tourists has great benefits especially for the tourism industry as it advances our economy and I hope this will help some of the businesses to recover their losses very fast. As usual, we promise our visitors a fun filled experience in our town. This year, we will be having various activities such as the annual Swakopmund Fair, the golf day, the Nedbank desert dash and food festival just to name a few. In addition, Swakopmund offers a variety of activities ranging from quad biking in the dunes, go-karting, sky diving, boat cruising, fishing, sand boarding, camel riding and many more other exciting activities. Furthermore, we would like to reassure our visitors of their safety as we have put in place measures to ensure
Police, the community liaison police as well as our own Emergency response team will be working tirelessly during this season. I would also like to emphasise the behaviour of our drivers on the road and call on all drivers to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol as that has been one of the key contributors to road accidents. During festive season, let us continue to adhere to the legal and safety regulations in order to save our lives
and that of our loved ones. The festive season is a time for great joy as we celebrate the birth of the Christ child, Jesus; it is a period where we are expected to spend quality time with our family, friends and loved ones. It may be a time for healing and renewed strength. It should thus be regarded as a sacred time therefore, let us be a blessing unto others and extend love and be jovial and in our celebrations and let us cherish the Creator. However, many are saddened at Christmas time when they think of their loved ones who will not be able to come home for various reasons, some have passed on or some are in hospital due to illnesses or injuries and thus making it difficult for families to be merry during this time. But I hope that you will find comfort and peace in
Cllr Louisa Kativa the Lord. I pray that our almighty creator will heal those who may be sick at home or in hospital during this Christmas. I pray for comfort and peace for the elderly who are at different old age homes. In the same vein, I would like to express my sincere condolences to the families of those who have departed from us. I wish you strength and peace during this festive season as you think of your loved ones. May you find strength in the Lord.

Early Christmas Gifts from the Junior Town Council The Junior Town Council donated about 180 Christmas Gift packages to children living in Mondesa and DRC. The Santa shoe box is an annual project on the Junior Town Council calendar that is aimed towards assisting the less privileged children, especially during the festive season, by providing them with basic necessities as early Christmas gifts range from clothing, toiletries and toys for the younger children. They visited two Soup kitchens in DRC as well as the Hanganeni Primary School and Festus Gonteb Primary School and deliver these boxes. The rest of the boxes were distributed to children walking on the streets as surprise give away gifts. The Junior Town Council hereby wish to acknowledge and extend our gratitude to the Lutheran Church in town, the Nedbank Namibia and vari-
ous stakeholders around Swakopmund who extended their hand towards the project. Your valuable and kind assistance ensured that we put a smile on the faces of these children. The famous Baden Powel once said; "...But the real way to get happiness is by giving out happiness to other people.

The beaches are open and accessible to fishermen with 4×4’s. Remember, no angling is allowed within the borders of the Cape Cross Seal Reserve! Well-known angling spots with names like Bennie se rooi lorrie, Popeye, Sarah se gat, Canopy, Blare and many more, are not marked but maps with GPS coordinates are available at the Tourist Information Office. The traditional months for rock and surf angling are from the end of January to April, but serious fishermen believe that you have a good chance right through the year.

Pupkewitz Foundation Open Athletics Championships Swakop Striders Athletic Club in conjunction with the Pupkewitz Foundation as the main sponsor will host the Open Athletics Championships on 22 December at the Vinita Sport field (next to the Dome) in Swakopmund. The Open Athletics Championships originated a few years ago to attract professional athletes and coaches to the coastal town of Swakopmund and to give young and amateur athletes an opportunity to rub shoulders with well-known world class athletes. Organiser of the event, a well-known high jump coach from Swakopmund, Hennie Horn said this year's event will probably be the best ever with two-time Olympian, Mosito Lehata from Lesotho as well as Namibia's new athletic star Beatrice Masilingi who is the fastest under 18 in the world and a few athletes from Zimbabwe and about 20 from South Africa and some of the best athletes from Namibia will be in action to compete for a podium position. Horn said “The championships are open for athletes from the age of seven to seniors. This year we will have a few athletes from Zimbabwe, Lesotho and about 20 from South Africa that will compete against the best athletes from Namibia for a podium position.” According to Horn more than 100 entries were received within the first three days after the opening of entries for the event and they are still expecting between 150 and 200 athletes. Unlike previous years, there will be no entry fees, says the organizer, Hennie Horn. "We know people are suffering due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and we want to make entries as easy and convenient as possible for young athletes and their parents. Therefore, entries for the event will be free for all”, Horn said. We are still in need of volunteers that would like to help on the event for a minimum fee and a meal/water/cool drink. FNB Sandman Triathlon 2020 Rudi Bowe
Team Eight Eight Sixteen Megatron consisting of Phillip Seidler (swimming), Erich Goeieman (running) and Morne Hornibal (cycling) are the winners of the men's team category in the ultra-division of the popular FNB Sandman Triathlon that was held last Sunday 6 December at the Mole in Swakopmund. A total of 350 participants including four from Zimbabwe, competed in the ultra, standard, sprint and mini categories of the 36th edition of the popular FNB Sandman Triathlon Phillip Seidler completed the 1.9km swim in 20:21 with teammates Erich Goeieman and Morne Hornibal maintained the lead established by Seidler and clinched first place in the 21.1km run in time of 1:18:43 and 90km cycle in time of 02:30:13 respective. Namibia's senior national Triathlon champion, Konrad Marais was the winner of the ultramen's elite category in a time of four hours and 38 minutes with Risa Dreyer the winner in the elite ladies' ultra-category in a time of four hours and 59 minutes. Seidler said "Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much!" thanks to Helen Keller and my team mates Erich Goeieman (runner) and Morne Hornibal (cyclist) together we worked hard and
