Crosswind possible Man due in court cause of plane crash today for hammerdeath of his girlfriend

A sudden crosswind is the most likely cause of a plane crash involving a trainee pilot and a training aircraft of Swakopmund Flying School on Saturday. The Piper Cherokee (V5-KAI) came down at around noon on Saturday next to the runway on the Roidina Nature Reserve some 20km north of Omaruru. According to the civil aviation authority the pilot was on a navigation flight and had to perform a “touch and go” maneuver at Roidina before flying to the Uis airstrip where he had to perform the same before flying back to Swakopmund. At Roidina the pilot touched down and immediately accelerated to take off again. At a height of around ten feet the plane was caught in a crosswind and the pilot lost directional control of his craft. The plane crashed into trees and shrubs next to the runway. The pilot sustained head injuries, as well as other injuries and was taken by car to the Omaruru state hospital. From there he was rushed by ambulance to Swakopmund and admitted to the Cottage MediClinic. Note: the Aircraft Accident Unit of the Depart of Civil Aviation in the Ministry of Works and Transport investigates the accident and will publish its findings in an accident report in the foreseeable future.

A 29-year old man is expected to make a first appearance in the Walvis Bay magistrate’s court today for the gruesome murder of his girlfriend at their common home in Kuisebmond’s Coris Street on Wednesday. The accused is believed to have beaten his girlfriend, age 26, to death with a hammer, and thereafter reported the matter to the Police and handed himself over. The deceased, who was a factory worker at Hangana Seafood Processors, reportedly arrived at home from night shift work at around 05:00 on Wednesday. Her boyfriend was waiting for her, and started arguing with her accusing her of an affair with another man. He allegedly also pushed her out of the house, but she refused to leave. The accused then reportedly turned violent, hitting her with clenched fists and then delivered her a death blow with a hammer.

President Hage Geingob is on a brief visit to Walvis Bay since yesterday, among others to officially hand over completed low cost houses to their new owners in Kuisebmond today.

Mr Ryan Gordon, a well-known community activist, has been elected to replace the late Cllr. Stanley Bikeur as Councillor for the Landless People Movement (LPM) on the Walvis Bay Town Council. Gordon will be sworn in later this month. Councillor Bikeur recently died of Covid19 complications and according to law the LPM had ninety days to select a new Councillor.

Winning an Academy Award is now a valid dream for Namibia. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has approved the Namibia International Feature Film Awards Selection Committee. A 7-member committee of Namibian Creatives and Cinephiles got the greenlight ahead of the 2022 Academy Awards, popularly known as The Oscars. Easily one of the most coveted movie awards, and glamorous events in Hollywood and the global entertainment calendar, The Oscars, has until now remained ostensibly out of the grasp of the Namibian film industry. Composed of a diverse group of Namibians, Obed Emvula heads the Namibian Oscars Selection Committee as the chairperson. Other members include Bridget Pickering, Tim Huebschle, Marinda Stein, Abius Akwaake, Richard Pakleppa, and Linda de Jager. Emvula said: “What emphasizes this promise of a global award for Namibia is evident in our resolve to tell unique stories that reveal our unique realities and that define us as Namibians and as Africans. Therefore, we will not take this humbling opportunity to give a platform to credible Namibian films at the Oscars annually, for granted”. The committee will call for Namibian entries ahead of the 94th Academy Awards ceremony which will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles; 27 March 2022. This opens an opportunity to all Namibians with eligible and qualifying films to submit without a submission fee charged.

The trainee pilot involved in the crash was identified as Mr. Charles Creasy. Creasy was still hospitalised in Swakopmund at the time of going to press yesterday. See Report on page 1.

Mwenyo heads Namport’s Commercial Services The Office of the Chief Executive Officer is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Elias st Mwenyo as the new Executive for Commercial Services, effective the 1 of September 2021. Elias joined Namport on 07 December 2004 and began his career within the logistics and shipping industry as a Key Accounts Executive. He was subsequently promoted to Manager Sales and Services in 2008 and then Manager Business Development in 2011. He holds a Master of Science in Maritime Affairs, majoring in Shipping Management and Logistics degree from the World Maritime University in Sweden and a Bachelors of Technology in Marketing Management from the Namibian University of Science and Technology. Elias has completed a Senior Management Development Program as well as the Management Development Program with the Stellenbosch Business School, among other Port, Shipping and Sales professional development courses. Namport sees drastic increase of salt exports through Walvis Bay The Port of Walvis Bay was a hive of salty activities on Monday as two vessels were docked to load salt, destined for the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Maria Da Paz loaded 4 500 metric tons of bagged salt, whereas the Uniscout loaded 7 000 metric tons of bagged salt. Both vessels are destined for the Port of Matadi, Congo. Over the past four months, Namport recorded a combined total (bagged and bulk salt) of 160,186 metric tons of salt exported via the Port of Walvis Bay to various destinations. Such volumes are a testament to the unending efforts of Namport's workforce which remains committed to providing the best quality port services to all seaborne trade through excellent customer service, sustainable growth and social responsibility, thus contributing to the transformation of Namibia as a logistics hub. Another vessel worth noting is the Mediterranean Bridge currently alongside, is expected to depart late Saturday afternoon once an operation of a total of 1674 moves is carried out on the vessel. The Swakopmund Town Council thanked residents for keeping Council informed of damaged road signs. Thanks to this commitment, all reported damaged stop signs in the DRC settlement and Matutura have been replaced. For any damaged road sign reporting, residents are advised to include a photo and the location and report to Council's work section.

DBN donates laptops for academic excellence Rudi Bowe

The mighty Duinesig High School one of the leading institutions of learning in Walvis Bay that providing education to 1355 students from grade 8 to 12 received 15 laptops worth N$60 000 and an additional N$20 000 to assist with internet connectivity from the Development Bank of Namibia (DBN).

DBN head of marketing and communication, Jerome Mutumba said he was moved by the school's testimonies and was touched to learn that this school with 1355 learners from a previously disadvantaged community, has made its' mark in the region and country. Mutumba explained that “The achievements made by previous learners of this school made it easy for the bank to give this small token that will allow the learners to also be connected with the rest of the world.” “As an institution with a progressive outlook we know that we must strive to do better at all costs and we must be transformational in our dealings in order to provide a better service to our clients. We are dealing with the two most delicate resources there are: the mind of a child and the future of this land” Mutumba said. Mutumba challenged and motivate the current grade 12 learners to perform to the best of their ability as the bank will give N$10 000 to the top be forming. Principal of Duinesig High School Stanley Urikhob said that DBN has invested in fertile ground as far as academic excellence is concerned at the school. Urikhob stated that as an institution with a progressive outlook they know that they must strive to do better at all costs and the services rendered at the school should be second to none. We must do better, we must be the best. Urikhop explained that the donation will truly advance the school as an institution of learning as learners will now be able to visit the library and go online for purposes of research and online learning

while our staff members can also make use of these facilities should remote learning be forced upon us.” Meanwhile Archie Shipanga an ex learner of Duinesig High School and owner of Space Dimensions offered to sponsor bursaries valued at N$20 000 to two schools learners. The marketing agency will award bursaries to two Grade 12 learners with an interest in media and marketing. Walvis Bay-born Archie Shipanga said “It is important as the demands in the market are rapidly shifting and constantly overlapping with new players emerges. “We must have a combo of skills and be assertive when pursuing our goals in order to survive and succeed” Shipanga said.

Learners and teachers of AS level schools need to be brave Sharlien Tjambari

The Minister of Education, Arts and Culture Anna Nghipondoka encouraged and motivated Principals, teachers, and learner's representatives of Advance Subsidiary (AS) level schools to be brave, during her visit to Erongo region on Monday this week. While addressing the principals, teachers, and learners at the COSDEF Arts and Craft Centre, Nghipondoka said: “this meeting is for us to put heads together, for us to encourage each other especially because of the difficult time in which we are implementing this new, as it is said its not a reformed curriculum and we never had Advanced Subsidiary, it is a new curriculum that we are implementing into our country. A very important one which needs a lot of effort, it need a lot of perseverance, a lot of resilience and especially because when we reach the top of the curriculum reform with a new grade added this is when we are doing it during a difficult time. A challenging time when our

school attendances have been interrupted now and then,

through closure of schools, through sickness and even

through the deaths of our teachers”. According to Nghipondoka, the class of 2021, teachers, learners, and principals are trailblazers. She said AS is not difficult, it is a challenge, and a challenge is there to challenge the way things are done. To challenge intellect

and capacity. “For our Advance Subsidiary level teachers, this is not by choice but being a teacher by nature we should be motivated to grab this opportunity and live up to the definition of trailblazers by adopting bravery and when I am talking about teachers, I am also

referring to learners here”. Currently there are 11 schools in total offering the Advance Subsidiary Level, 7 public and 4 private schools. The number of learners for the AS level in Erongo region are 314 with 123 Teachers. The number

of subjects on AS level is 23. This meeting came at the right time when the Namibia Senior Secondary Certificate Advanced Subsidiary (NSSCAS) Level National Examinations will be written for the first time in Namibia.

German Embassy supports Environmental Educational Centre for sustainable development on the NamibRand Nature Reserve NaDEET, the Namib Desert Environmental Education Trust, located 100 km south of Sesriem/Sossusvlei on the NamibRand Nature Reserve received a total of 423,345 NAD (25,000.00 EUR) from the micro project fund of the German Embassy in Windhoek. The grant was used to modernize the base camp by developing an information area, garden/food processing area, storage as well as an operational support infrastructure. The project included the renovation of existing buildings and the construction of new facilities. The development of this multi-purpose facility aims to improve awareness, knowledge and practical experience of the visitors of NaDEET Centre. The focal point is the information area, which consists of interactive displays about the NamibRand Nature Reserve, desert ecology and conservation amongst others. These displays serve as different information stages, leading to the various locations, such as the compost area, borehole, garden, food processing area, solar cooking and tree nursery, whereby inviting the visitors to participate in the different activities.

This is in alignment with the main objective of the organization, which is providing environmental education for everyone; but in particular for school classes visiting the centre and learning about sustainable development. Project partner The Namib Desert Environmental Education Trust (NaDEET) is a non-profit, Namibian trust established in 2003. NaDEET objectives are to provide environmental education for Namibians, regardless of income, by: - addressing relevant environmental issues through hands-on, experiential learning - supporting the Namibian school curricula in a practical, learner-centred way. - providing the opportunity of experiencing the county's namesake - the Namib Desert first hand, thus creating a sense of respect and responsibility for their natural environment

T20 Cricket action starts at the coast Rudi Bowe

The 2021 Coastal T20 Cricket league will get under way this weekend at the Walvis Bay Oval and the Sparta cricket field. The six coastal Cricket teams that will lock horn in the Coastal T20 Cricket league are two teams from Blue Waters, Sparta and newcomers Pro-Ed Old Boy's Cricket Club (PEOBCC) and the Junior Coastal Cricket Academy (JCCA). The league will run from tomorrow 11 September until 10 October with the semi-finals and finals set for the weekend of 16 and 17 October. The Cricket action will start with Blue Waters 1 up against Blue Waters 2 at the Walvis Bay Oval and Sparta 1 up again Sparta 2 at the Sparta Cricket field. Both games are set to start at 13:30. The athletes, Liina Nanhele (15), a grade 9 learner of Tutaleni High School in Walvis Bay and Indila Abrahams a grade 7 learner at Riverside Private School in Swakopmund will be part of 17 athletes with 11 competing in athletics and six in chess that will represent Namibia in the ISF U15 World Sport Games, the largest international multisport event with close to 2 500 students between the age of 13 and 15 from 42 countries competing in 14 sports disciplines. Erongo Region Governor Neville Andre said during a courtesy visit to his office by athlete Liina Nanhele that Namibia has a lot of talent, “It is just that they are not given that opportunity to express their talent.” According to the Governor there some sport bodies and administrators that are affecting the progress of our athletes. He, therefore, called on national sports bodies to create platforms for athletes who are from less privileged backgrounds.

Andre encouraged Nanhele to go and do her best. “When you are starting with your heats like we saw with Mboma and Masilingi, every heat that you run, break your own record. Focus on yourself, show them the product that we can produce from Walvis Bay, Erongo region and Namibia”. Nanhele said that she is grateful for the opportunity granted her to go represent Namibia at ISF U15 World Sport Games. “I will not just try my best, but I will do my best to get that medal and bring it home.” Liina Nanhele will represent the country in the 400m race and the Riverside Chess Queen Indila Abrahams in chess.

The fifth leg of the RMC Namibia Karting Rudi Bowe

The fifth leg of the ROTAX Max Challenge (RMC) Namibia Karting held last weekend saw some exiting racing at the Tony Rust Racetrack in Windhoek. A record breaking 26 entries with a few newcomers pulled out all the stops to give us some of the best racing in a long time. Host of Rotax Max Challenge Namibia Jörg Goldbeck said that Karting in Namibia started early this year with 5 of the 8 Nationals legs, hosted and organised by Kart Store Namibia completed. According to Goldbeck, Championship points are allocated for each National leg, adding up to crown the RMC Namibia Champions in 6 different classes. Goldbeck said “The fifth leg was a great day of Karting and it shows that Motorsport is alive and powers the continuous growth of Karting in Namibia. “Karting is a fast-growing Motorsport in Namibia with newcomers at every of the past five legs and we are expecting a few in the next leg” Goldbeck said Nine Namibian Karters will be participating with about 120 drivers at the Rotax African Open in Pretoria on 3 October 2021. The winner of the African Open will receive a ticket to the Rotax Max Challenge World Finals in Bahrain in December this year. Bambino class for (5-8) saw a record breaking 8 participants with good performances of the Newcomers. Cecil Koort JNR taking a clean sweep, winning all 3 heats to extend his championship lead. Paul Oosthuizen and Basti van Niekerk taking second and third respectively. having another 3 newcomers for the next leg on 6 November. Maxterino class (7–13) saw five participants going into the race with newcomer Ariana Slamet finding her way into the race with a big brave heart against the boys. Heinrich Roos with his best performance on the track this far taking the win for the day! Outstanding performance from Roos in Heat 2 and 3, making sure he Mario Neves, Travis Nell and Mick Goldbeck battling it out for second, third and fourth place respectively. Junior Max class (12-16) saw only two participants that battle it out in a big mixed class race (all 4 big MAX classes racing together) with Allen Smith showing and win all three heats with Michael Fourie second. Senior Max class (15-open) saw Justus Beulker who upgrade from the Junior Max class with an outstanding top level performance in his new Sodi kart take a clean sweep to win all 3 heats with Chazlo Mara with a solid

preformance taking the second place and Newcomer Martin Gouws with a remarkable first performance in third. DD2 (15-open / 2 gear shifters): Richie Slamet and Ivan Vorster having the battle of the day in all 3 heats with both an exceptional performance in the DD2 (15-open / 2 gear shifters) with Slamit taking the chequered flag. Dd2 (32-open / 2 gear shifters) with 5 Participants saw Newcomer Richard Slamet SNR taking the heat 1 with Rainer Windisch also a newcomer take heat 2. Paul Oosthuizen snatching heat 3 for the win and a

10 point championship lead. Windisch came in second with Slamit senior third, followed by Jörg Goldbeck and Cecil Koorts senior. Capricorn Eagles won first game Rudi Bowe The Namibian Capricorn Eagles on Thursday beat Uganda by 4 runs in their opening game at the ICC Women's T20 Africa Regional Qualifiers from the 9 – 19 September at the Botswana Cricket Association Ovals in Gaborone. The Capricorn Eagles are competing in an 11-nation tournament that is part of the African regional qualifiers that are a pathway towards the 2023 ICC Women's T20 World Cup in South Africa. The Capricorn Eagles will compete in a seven-day long tournament at the Botswana Cricket Association Ovals in Gaborone in Group B against Cameroon, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Ugandawith host Botswana, Eswatini, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania and Zimbabwe in group A. The 20 over format tournament with two groups of 6 and 5 teams in the roundrobin face with the top 2 teams from each group qualify for the semi-finals. The winner of the tournament will qualify for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup Global Qualifier. Today 9 September the Capricorn Eagles will play against Nigeria at14:30 and on 13 September against 12:30 pm BCA 2 Namibia vs Sierra Leone at 12:30 with their final group B game against Cameroon on 14 September at 09:30. The semi-final will be on 17 September at 09:15 and 14:15 with the thirdplace play-off and the final on 19 September at 09:15 and 14:15 respectively. NPBC men National Bowls champs Rudi Bowe

The men's team of Namib Park Bowling Club (NPBC) is the 2021 National Bowls League champions. The League Finals were held on the weekend of 4 and 5 September at Namib Park Bowling Club in Walvis Bay and Rossmund Bowling Club in Swakopmund. The National league finals that were divided into Men's Premier Division, Ladies Premier, and Trips 1st Division and Trips 2nd Division saw a stiff competition between the Coastal Clubs, TransNamib Bowling Club, Eros Bowling Club and Windhoek Bowling Club. Final standings after the final round of the league for this year are: TransNamib Bowling Club is the overall winners with 114 points, followed by Namib Park Bowling Club on 93 points and Eros Bowling Club third with 90 Points. Mens Premier Division Winner is Namib Park Bowling Club with 39 points and the Ladies Premier Division Winners are Eros Bowling Club with 30 Points. The 1st division Trips Winners are TransNamib Bowling Club with 42 Points and the 2nd Division Trips Winner are Eros Bowling Club with 30 Point. The Namibia Bowling Association also held its Annual Award ceremony at Namib Park Bowling Club. This ceremony awards most iconic personality in the bowling community and it was

established in 2019. Due to Covid-19 restrictions it did not take place since 2019. Oldest coastal running and cycling event cancelled Namibia's oldest coastal running and cycling event the Hangana Hake Run and Ride formerly known as the Lucky Star Marathon that was slated for 2 October in Walvis Bay, has been cancelled for the second consecutive year. The annual sporting event enjoyed by many local and international participants, is pivotal for athletes aiming to qualify for the Two Oceans and Comrades marathons. The event that started as a half marathon race with the Cycling categories added in 2015 to the event to offer the same excitement and diversity to cycling enthusiasts. The main Cycling event being a Namibian Cycling Federation sanctioned 105km road race as well as an off-road 21km fat bike race, which traverses sand dunes in the vicinity of Walvis Bay, a 21km mountain bike and 5km kiddies' races with 10km fun run.

The organisers, Hangana Seafood, said that a decision to cancel the event was taken due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and related risk to the participants. The organisers added that they cannot ignore the reality of the times we live in and their priority remains the health and safety of our participants, the protection of staff member, volunteers, suppliers, and the broader coastal community. They the organisers trust that all stakeholders and participants will understand the responsibility they have towards each other to stay safe. According to the organisers the next Hangana Hake Run and Ridewill be hosted on 8 October 2022 in Walvis Bay.
