The municipality of Walvis Bay confirmed this week a computer virus was responsible for the crash of the local authority's computer network. The crash not only resulted in administrative headaches for both ratepayers and municipal staff, but the municipality is also experiencing a financial setback in that rates and taxes accounts will only be posted to ratepayers today.

“We had skilled and experienced information technology service providers here who first had to locate the problem. Then the slow and frustrating process began to recover all data”, municipal spokesperson Kevin Adams explained this week. What could be established so far is that a computer virus, presumably through the system's email segment entered the system and crashed it. For several weeks now, rate payers could not establish what they owe in rates and taxes. Apart from dealing with frustrated customers, staff had to revert to the ways of the old days – written receipts. Some ratepayers just deposited payments based on estimates from previous months, whilst others are waiting it out for the accounts to be mailed. As a result of the system crash, no cut-off list could be produced for accounts not paid.
During the most recent monthly meeting, the Swakopmund Town Council gave the General Manager: Engineering Services authorisation to have certain unapproved structures on erf 58 at the Rössmund Golf Estate demolished – and if necessary to obtain a court interdict to do so (namib times reported). Namib times spoke to the owner of the property this week, who has no intention of demolishing any structures. According to the owner of the property (Erf 58), he bought the house close to nine

Calls for three year ban of pilchard catches Erwin Leuschner
The Namibia Chamber of Environment (NCE) has called on the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Bernhard Esau, to introduce a moratorium on pilchard fishing as an urgent measure – for at least three years or until the stock has recovered to a sustainable level. In a statement released this week the Namibia Chamber of Environment has questioned the decision by Bernhard Esau, who admitted taking “a gamble” when he announced a quota of 14 000 tons for pilchard for this fishing season (namib times reported). “Minister Esau is gambling with the ecological stability, biodiversity, productivity and economy of Namibia's marine ecosystem,” NCE charges. According to the NCE the Minister dismissed the scientific recommendations when he announced the quota, stating there is a “misconception” – despite overwhelming evidence of the contrary. “Instead he suggests that pilchards simply may have moved to deeper waters, a statement that appears to be a personal view that is seemingly not backed by any solid data,” the statement reads. The Chamber gives a brief history of the pilchard fisheries in Namibia, specifically about the collapse of the stock. “In the 1950s and 1960s the pilchard stocks were first estimated, varying between five and eleven million tonnes. Since then, it appears that the biomass of pilchard in our waters has declined by 99% or more,” it reads. The above scenario can be attributed to the pilchard industry which grew rapidly in the 1960s, with a peak in 1968 when
declared catches were 1.4 million tonnes. “Actual catches were probably much higher as much of the pilchard caught was used for fishmeal and the stock was also fished in southern Angola.” This level of exploitation was grossly unsustainable and as a result the stock crashed between 1970 and 1972. According to the NCE fisheries scientists already in 1982 called for a moratorium in order to let the stock recover, but this was ignored. The NEC describes pilchard as “low trophic level” forage fish species, which feeds on plankton and in turn provide food for marine predators. A drop in biomass of such species to low levels severely affects the marine food chain. In many studies conducted on this topic, the Namibian scenario is highlighted as a “worst case scenario in the 21st century.” “This has been the primary reason for the declines of endemic seabirds such as African Penguins, Cape Gannets and Cape Cormorants, all of which are now at serious risk of local extinction,” it states. In an attempt to rectify the situation NEC calls on for an urgent moratorium to be put in place, while rigorous scientific research must be continued and intensified. Furthermore Marine Protected Areas (MPR) must be established and an agreement with Angola should be drawn up to sustainably manage the shared stock.

years ago. After staying at Rössmund for a few years he decided to construct an additional garage, as well as a boundary wall around his property. “The wall keeps out springbuck destroying my garden. It also serves as a windbreaker,” he explained. The plans for the additional structures were drawn up by an architect and were in-line with the aesthetics of the so called Rössmund Golf Estate. He handed the plans in at the Rössmund Golf Estate Home Owners Association (RGEHOA) for approval. The Association refused to approve the plans. Besides paying monthly rates and taxes, Rössmund residents also have to pay monthly levies for the so called golf estate, of which a portion goes towards the upkeep of the golf course. This particular owner however, stopped paying these monthly levies in 2012, after it was established that Rössmund is not a Golf Estate, but only an ordinary suburb of Swakopmund. He was also protesting against a portion of the levies paid for the upkeep of the golf course, as the golf course is an entity privately owned by the Rossmund Golf Course cc. As a result of the refusal to pay the levies, HOA refused to approve his building plans and would only do so if he settles the outstanding levies. The owner thereafter submitted the plans to the municipality of Swakopmund for approval. The municipality also did not approve the plans stating that the HOA needs to approve them first. “After I exhausted all avenues to sort out the issue and did not get any feedback, we decided to build the structures,” said the owner. The structures consist of the boundary wall as well as an additional garage – an investment worth more than N$600 000. The number of “rebel” home owners grew who refuse to pay levies, because they dispute the existence of this so-called golf estate and the fact that the privately-owned golf course is maintained with funds from residents of the Rossmund suburb. The Rossmund Golf Estate Homeowners Association subsequently decided to approach the Swakopmund magistrate's court to recover the levies in arrears from homeowners. Despite the fact that several homeowners were/and still are in arrears, only one resident was sued. It was at this juncture a discovery was made that the Rossmund Golf Estate Homeowners Association was established with a non-existent section 21 company registration number. Subsequently this incorrect company registration number was utilised to register notarial bonds of imposition against title deeds at Rossmund, which would compel home owners to abide by the estate's rules and to pay levies. By implication these notarial bonds are nonbinding and need to be rectified. The Homeowners Association did register the correct company registration number in 2006, but a rectification is required to replace the non-existent number for the correct one. An application was launched in the Swakopmund magistrates court to do so, but the magistrate ruled only the High Court of Namibia has the jurisdiction to hear such an application for rectification. This resulted in the Homeowners Association's case to recover levies in arrears delayed indefinitely. Also, as the matter is dragging out, the RGEHOA has not issued certificates (that the plans adhere to the aesthetics rules of the HOA) to all applicants, inclusive of the owners of Erf 58. “So far the court has not ruled that either party was wrong and the issue (dispute) is still hanging in the air. We were under the impression we followed all the right channels and when we did not get any feedback from anywhere, we decided to go ahead with the building of the structures,” the owner concluded.

Employees from the solid waste management department, also known as compactor operators, at the Swakopmund Municipality are not happy with the way occupational health check-ups are done at their respective work places and feel that the employees working at the sewerage plant get special treatment compared to them while they almost do the same job, with the same risks. This issue was brought to namib time's attention by Mr Hosea Valombola a compactor operator who said that he was speaking on behalf of his colleagues. The first matter he raised was the issue of Occupational Health check-ups. He said he has been working for the Municipality for a period of over ten years, but in these ten years they have not received any occupational health check-ups until recently, which was last year on 10 February. Responding to that and commenting on how often employees working at solid management get occupational health check-ups, the Swakopmund Municipality's Marketing and Corporate Communications Officer Mrs Ailie Gebhardt said the frequency of testing relates to the health risks to which the employees are exposed to. “The Municipal Council of Swakopmund performed a health risk analysis and implemented the recommendations as per the report received”. Gebhardt said on 10 June 2013 a submission was made to the Planning Forum under point 5.2 where the following was resolved: That the health services department identifies positions where annual medical check-ups will be compulsory, and payable by council, costs to be defrayed form the relevant department vote; that the union be requested to provide input in this regard; that the health services department obtains quotations from qualified professional and; that the health services Department complies a medical examination form. “In consonance with the Planning Forum resolution provided, formal quotations were requested for the provision of medical surveillance services and in addition, the municipality council of 14 January 2016, under item 9.2 resolved that the staff members, be subjected to medical examination, that the manager of engineering services and the manager of health services identify applicable votes in the operational expenditure budget of 2015/16 to fund the envisaged medical examinations Valombola also claims that his fellow colleagues who works at the sewerage works get tested annually but not the ones at solid waste ngineering department had funds available to start executing the examinations at once, whilst the Health department had to wait for the next financial year to start” Gebhardt added. While the association warns of the challenges lying ahead, it also congratulates a decision taken by the Ministry of Mines and Energy at the end of last year. The Ministry lifted the moratorium placed in 2006 on the issuance of new exploration licenses for nuclear fuels. “After ten years, new developments in the Namibian uranium sector are now once again possible, and the industry wholeheartedly welcomes this commendable move by the Minister of Mines and Energy,” the statement reads. Furthermore the lifting of the moratorium is a “good example of how government and industry can work together to enable future success.” NUA is confident though that the uranium price will not remain at the irrationally low level it is currently trading at, as analysts mostly predict. “The Namibian uranium sector is therefore destined to be a major driver of economic development of our nation once prices have recovered, and the industry is looking forward to continue to make its contribution,” the statement continues. According to the association mining is the backbone of the Namibian economy with uranium mining
being a very important economic factor in the western Erongo Region. Currently the three operating mines, Rössing, Husab and Langer Heinrich, play an important role in the socio-economic development of the region – so do the exploration projects of Bannerman Resources, Reptile Namibia, Zhonge Resources, Valencia and Marenica. NUA furthermore reminds stakeholders and the general public that the financial situation of the Namibian uranium operations depends on the market value of their product being the ura-nium price. “The prices of mineral commodities are cyclic and subject to volatility, thereby driving fluctuating operating margins for mining companies over time and uranium is no exception. Commodity prices can change quickly – both positively and negatively,” the statement continues. The uranium price closed at the end of February at US$22.25 per pound. This is a slight recovery compared to November 2016, when the price had hit an almost all-time low of US$18 per pound.

Heavy loaded truck tips over

A truck tipped over outside Swakopmund on the B2 as it was taking a turn onto the backroad to Henties Bay yesterday morning. The Quiver Tree Investments truck was reportedly transporting sand and when approaching the back road, it was believed the driver took the turn too fast and with the heavy load of sand, caused the truck to tip over and land on its side. The driver was the sole occupant of the truck, but fortunately was not injured.

Theo is no more.... Theodore (Theo) Ignatius Junias (36), a well-know business man of Swakopmund and sole proprietor of West Coast En gin eerin g an d Welding Services CC (WCEWS) and Namibian Institute of Welding (NIW), lost control over a Nissan hard body at about 18:00 last week Wednesday about 30 kilometres from Usakos on the way to Swakopmund. The vehicle left the road and overturned. He died on the spot, while a passenger did not sustain any injuries. Theo is survived by his wife, Elaine and four children. From a young age, Theo was always a high energy person who loved being outdoors, especially farm life. He found his soul mate and partner for life at a young age and got married last December. Theo, a double coded welder and metals fabricator with about 17 years of experience in mechanical engineering trade founded the WCEWS (about 7 years ago), and NIW (about 5 years ago), provided high quality training in engineering and welding services, which qualifications are NQA accredited. To provide further support he arranged internship and job attachments for many who qualified at his company as well as other companies that specialises in engineering and welding industry, that completed various contracts especially in the mining industry, inter alia at Husab, and Trekkopje mine as well as Elgin Brown & Hammer, Murray and Roberts and Sea drill. During the weekends he either spend the time with his wife and children at the coast or tend to his farming activities near Usakos. There are an increase in stock theft in the Erongo recently and news of possible stock theft led him on this faithful journey to the farm to verify the extent on his losses. He will be dearly missed by his family, colleagues and friends. Funeral arrangements will be published in the namib times.

SMGV singing club celebrates 115th birthday Erwin Leuschner
Once a year the coastal men's singing club, Swakopmund Männergesangverein (SMGV), celebrates the day it was founded with a concert. This year the SMGV decided to host a unique event celebrating its 115 years of existence. The club hosted a “Weinfest” concert at the Haus der Jugend (HdJ) and while entertaining the guests with a variety of wellpracticed pieces, visitors were also treated to some good food and wine. Suspected rapist, who is out on bail, strikes again A 19 year-old Swakopmund resident, who is currently out on bail on a charge of rape, struck once again over the weekend and raped another victim. This time he raped his neighbour, said Deputy Commissioner Ottilie Kashuupulwa, regional crime investigations co-ordinator for Erongo, to namib times yesterday. River could reach the sea for the first time in six years For the first time in six years the Swakop River has inched close to the Atlantic Ocean, passing Goanikontes on Saturday. By Sunday the water, which initially was only a small trickle, had filled most of the sand mining pits at the smallholdings outside of town. By yesterday afternoon the river had not reached the road crossing at the C28 yet and the water level had subsided short of its goal. The railway line connecting the coast with the north of Namibia has been disrupted about 40 kilometres north of the Kranzberg station located in the vicinity of Usakos. A part of the railway line washed away during the night of Thursday to Friday after heavy rains fell in the area. A freight train, which was on its way towards the coast, derailed during the night, suffering major damages. According to the national railway carrier TransNamib heavy equipment is required to repair the track. There is no indication how long repair work will take and when the line will be passable again. READER: SWAKOPMUND With reference to your article in Namib Times of Tuesday 7 March 2017: I know Eddie van Wyk personally, and have always regard him as a gentleman, and if Eddie is upset about the incident, it must have been serious. As a building contractor for many years, I am strongly of opinion that the Municipality of Swakopmund do favor some contractors above others, and I say that for the following reason: When I start a new project, the plans had to be approved by the Municipality; then the Building Inspector MUST see the foundation trenches and approve it before concrete is casted; then the Building Inspector MUST see the compacted floor and the plastic sheeting BEFORE concrete is casted and then also he MUST see the sewerage piping and connection. Bear in mind that the building line between erven is 1.500 m and SPECIAL PERMISSION MUST BE OBTAINED IF ONE WANTS TO EXCEED THE LINE, AND PERMISSION MUST BE OBTAINED FROM THE PARTICULAR OWNERS OF ADJACENT ERVEN. The past weekend I went to visit a friend who is residing in the new Swakopmund Retirement Village. First of all I noticed that some buildings are as close as 500mm apart from each other and I was told that in ALL THESE CASES, THE PLANS WERE APPROVED WITHOUT CONSUL-TING OWNERS OF ADJACENT PROPERTIES! I was furthermore told that the Building Inspector ONLY inspects the foundation trenches and NOT THE FLOORS. On account of this discrepancies, I am of the opinion that ALL BUILDING CONTRACTORS should be allowed to operate in the same way as the appointed contractors for the Swakopmund Retirement Village.

Bordeaux II se agterstewe kom op Lambertsbaai aan In ‘n onlangse uitgawe van namib times het ons oor ‘n oud-inwoner van Walvisbaai, mnr Johan Brink, berig wat die agterstewe van ‘n ou sardynskuit op die hawedorp aangekoop het. Hy wil graag daarvan ‘n stoep by sy woning op Lambertsbaai op die Suid-Afrikaanse weskus inrig. Ons het vandeesweek foto’s van mnr Brink ontvang waar die agterstewe van die skuit op Lambertsbaai aangekom het. Die struktuur is toe sommer ook op sy plek langs die huis staangemaak. Blaauws Transport het die struktuur vanuit Walvisbaai na Clanwilliam in die Wes Kaap geneem. Daar is dit op ‘n vragmotor oorgelaai wat oor ‘n hyskraan beskik wat die skuit se agterstewe op sy plek kon neersit. Mnr Brink se pa, wyle oom Frikkie Brink, het die sardynskuit destyds op Walvis Bay besit. Die skuit se naam was Bordeaux II. Toe oom Frikkie die skuit verkoop, is dit in later jare in ‘n langlynboot omskep. Dit het mettertyd uit gebruik geraak en die skuit het op anker gelê en vervalle geraak. Mnr Brink was vir ‘n reünie op Walvisbaai en het op
Bordeux II in sy vervalle toestand afgekom. Die nostalgie van sy kinderdae op Bordeaux II het hom laat besluit om die agterstewe te koop. Toe die tyd kom dat die skuit opgesny word, het hy die agterstewe gekoop. Hy gaan hierdie oorblysel uit sy kinderdae nou as ‘n aftreestoepie by sy huis op Lambertsbaai verewig. Mnr Brink sê hy sal nog foto’s stuur sodra die bouwerk van die aftreestoepie afgehandel is. Johan se moeder, tannie Elize Brink (84), was aangedaan om die oorblyfsel van Bordeaux II na soveel dekades weer te sien. “Kyk hoe oud het hy geword”, het sy teenoor haar kinders opgemerk. Standard Bank signs wage agreement with BAWON Media release On 8 March 2017 Standard Bank officially signed the salaries and benefits agreement with the Bank Workers Union of Namibia (BAWON). The bank's employees receive a 7.10 percent average increase for the financial year March 2017 to February 2018.

The bank and the union agreed on salaries and wages after just two days of amicable discussions. Chief Executive of Standard Bank, Junius Vetumbuavi Mungunda explains salary increases is subject to the principle, 'pay for performance.' “It is commendable to note that during the past four years, the parties have successfully negotiated a mutually beneficial agreement in an amicable and cordial manner. This is a clear de-monstration of a trust relationship between the Bank, our staff members and BAWON as representatives of the employees. In order to solidify this partnership, we will continue with our culture of openly engaging with BAWON on matters of mutual interest for the benefit of our employees and the Bank,” states Mungunda. He noted that the “Namibian economy is currently faced with serious headwinds characterised by a slowdown in the
mining, agriculture and construction industries, compounded by the regional drought and government consolidation efforts constraining the performance of the domestic economic activities. It is also pleasing to note the parties recognised these economic realities as foundation and point of departure for the negotiations.” Standard Bank employs over 1700 employees making it one of the larger employers in the economy. Other benefits granted during the year includes subsidised loan facilities for housing and vehicle loans to staff members as well the newly reviewed medical aid arrangements in response to requests by BAWON and the employees. “As we continue to improve the salary and benefit structures of our employees, I want to call on our employees to adopt an entrepreneurial mind-set found on accountability and an ownership culture. With the above, the payback or
return on investment to the company, employee and community is inevitable as performance and productivity increase,” said Mungunda. On his part, Secretary General of BAWON Thomas Muchima briefly stated that the negotiations went well with both parties agreeing on a win-win situation. Standard Bank's latest salary increment is announced despite the increasingly challenging climate faced by banks to maintain business growth and sustainability where all parties considered the welfare of the employees, taking into account issues such as the rising cost of living and inflation. This was the third wage and benefits agreement witnessed by Mungunda and overall the sixth consecutive year that Standard Bank and BAWON successfully negotiated a salary and benefits agreement without resorting to any dispute resolution process.

“We are probably going to hear about some cost saving measures in this week's budget speech by Minister Schlettwein and I would like to offer four little-known tips to help Namibians stay pennywise and effectively manage their dollars during this tough economy. In this way we can follow the savings example of our Government.” Tip 1: Save without a budget Many people find that creating and sticking to a budget is an easy and extremely effective way to manage their money. Unfortunately, this tactic doesn't work for everyone. For some people, budgeting is not only tedious — it's also futile. That's because many consumers simply end up breaking their budget time and again. If you have difficulty adhering to a budget, strange as it may sound financial experts say you should simply avoid budgeting altogether. Alternatively, as soon as you receive your salary, you should deposit a set amount of money into a savings account or another account you can't easily access, like the 32 Day Interest Plus Account - designed to be flexible with a minimum opening balance of N$100. Then, designate the remaining portion of your salary to living expenses and other purchases. As long as you don't have that extra money in your wallet, you'll spend less each month. You'll quickly realise it is possible to save and live off fewer dollars, even without a budget. Tip 2: Know when not to shop If you are feeling hung-ry, angry, lonely or tired as you stroll up to the door of a store, HALT! Why? Because if you're in any of these four states, you should avoid shopping. The acronym HALT (Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired) is com-monly used in substance abuse programmes. The same rule applies for every day consumers. If you are hungry, angry, lonely or tired, you are more likely to overs-pend in the store. Instead of going on a shopping spree, try to deal directly with whatever is causing you to feel this way. Tip 3: Put an end to buyer's remorse Have you ever bought an expensive piece of exercise equipment you used only once before stashing it in the garage? We're all guilty of it. At some time or another, we've all convinced ourselves in a weak mo-ment that we absolutely had to have an item — only to suffer from severe buyer's remorse later. Instead of agonizing over your silly, spontaneous purchases, financial experts say you should try to learn from your mistakes. Sit down with your family and do an “audit” of all the harebrained purchases you've made during the past year. Dig out your receipts, bank statements and credit card bills and point out all the things you bought that you wish you hadn't. You might start to notice some patterns — such as every time you visit a certain store, you end up buying something don't need. This process can help you avoid poor purchase choices in the future and put an end buyer's remorse. Tip 4: Take a spending break When was the last time you went an entire day without spending a dime? If you can't recall, it might be time for a monetary fast. Experts say it's financially healthy to take a few days off from spending money every so often. Although it might be difficult to keep your wallet on lock-down for two or three days, it could be well worth the effort. Monthly Monitor: February 2017 Market Review: diversified investment portfolio that is suitable for you, you should be Our current investment world is diverse, influenced by a bullish United States of OK. Are you sticking to your long-term investment plan? America (USA), uncertain South Africa (SA) and a mixed 'rest of the world'. Hendrie Scheun, MSc (Financial Economics) (London), ACFP The USA takes the lead. Its dominance is well established and all eyes are on the “Trump” share rally breaking record after new record. This strong increase in listed company prices is based on his policy intentions of massive infrastructure spending, significant lowering of corporate taxes and removal & consolidation of regulations. These measures will lower company costs or boost profits, thereby raising earnings and share prices. The USA, with some uncertainty about how President Trump will deliver on his policy objectives, is thus in a strong bull market phase. This is very positive for global shares. However, the Federal Reserve Bank has started raising short-term interest rates in December 2016 and will continue to do so in small increments. This is proof of a healthy USA economy, which may have some wage pressures building up from excess labour demand. The first few interest rate hikes are usually positive for shares but will hurt bond prices. South Africa is at an uncertain crossroad. Economic growth is picking up slightly in 2017 and improving in 2018, while inflation is slowing from its recent high of 6.8%. Short-term interest rates may have peaked. Government, however, is plagued by high budget deficits, rising debt and debt servicing levels. Minister Gordhan delivered a Budget that will probably keep international rating agencies from derating SA this year. Politically his position as Minister of Finance is under tremendous pressure. It will be a big negative for SA if he is removed or reshuffled. Table 1 below shows asset class returns over various periods:
Given the above backdrop, asset markets continue to be noisy over the short-term. Local shares had a negative February as a few large companies weakened on a resources sell off. However, many shares advanced in prices. This means the market breath is improving. Local listed property and local bonds continue to perform, supported by the appreciating SA Rand. Local shares are showing much promise over the medium term. The low 3-year return for shares is a big positive as it is less than half of the historical long-term average. Reversion to long-term averages, called “reversion to the mean”, works in both directions: · When we were doing very well in 2012 – 2014 we warned our clients that our portfolio performances were unsustainably high and that asset market returns will become more muted as they revert DOWN to the mean. · This happened during 2015 to 2016. · Our portfolio performances were below average for 2015 – 2016. Now the opposite holds: asset market returns will increase as they revert UP to the long-term average. This implies our portfolio performances will improve. Recent discussions between myself and leading asset managers in SA and Namibia confirm our analysis. For selected shares the SA share market is at a cheaper valuation point than in 2016, 2015 or even 2014; and company earnings are coming through. These will be the drivers for the rise in prices.
Portfolio Performance: Although markets can be volatile over shorter periods, like a month, they become more predictable given enough time. Table 2 shows the 1-year, 3-year (per annum) and 5-year (per annum) returns ending February 2017 of our five managed portfolios. The returns are calculated based on gross internal rates of return (IRR's) from actual client data.

Conclusion: Investments are a long-term journey that receive annual hits by short-term spikes/dips and are tested in every cycle by corrections: The horrible 2008 rebounded to the excellent 2009 – 2010, which turned over to the average 2011, which changed to the great 2012 – 2014, which was followed by the bad 2015 – 2016. Yet overall our long-term performances are compelling because they stayed on track throughout all the noises. Contrary to what the textbooks say, we are in fact not rational beings as our human emotions and the overwhelming negative short-term noises do affect our investment decisions. The results of obsessing over short-term performance is panicking moves that lead to lower returns. Vor zwei Wochen durften Eltern und Freunde der jungen Musikschüler einem kleinen Konzert in der Baptistenkirche in Vineta lauchen. Christa Lambrechts unterrichtet Kinder ab sieben Jahren bis ins Erwachsenenalter. Sie hat sogar schon einmal einem 60-Jährigen Violinenunterricht erteilt. Auf die Frage, was ihr am Unterrichten weniger Spaß macht, antwortet die langjährige Geigendozentin: ,,Es tut mir für jeden Leid, der mit dem Geigenunterricht aufhört, selbst wenn derjenige nicht unbedingt musikalisch ist. Eine unangenehme Erfahrung sind die Schüler, die jede Woche zum Unterricht kommen, jedoch nicht geübt haben. Dann fühle ich mich wie eine Gouvernante, die engagiert wurde, um Kinder einfach nur zu beschäftigen.” Dass ihr ihre Musikschule Spaß macht, merkt man der gebürtigen Südafrikanerin allerdings an. Oldest Beetle in South Africa nestled at refurbished Volkswagen AutoPavilion Volkswagens automotive museum, AutoPavilion, has recently had an upgrade and one of its new displays is Jan the Beetle. Jan was built on Wednesday, 14 September 1949 in the original Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg. In 1971 Volkswagen South Africa and Wheels magazine held a competition to find the oldest Beetle in South Africa. The winner was David Rubin of Middelburg, who received a brand-new 1300 Beetle in exchange for Jan the Beetle. After discovery in 1971, Jan went on display around South Africa before coming back home to rest at t h e Vo l k s w a g e n factory in Uitenhage.
However for a number of years, no one paid attention to Jan and he was left in storage as his condition had deteriorated and could not be displayed. That changed when Jan the Beetle was brought to the attention of another very special Jan at Volkswagen, namely Jan Schiedek-Jacht, the Head of Product Engineering at VWSA. Schiedek-Jacht, who is a classic car enthusiast and expert offered to give Jan a new lease on life. Soon, highly qualified engineers from Product Engineering at VWSA heard about Jan and offered to help. "The team under the leadership of Jan
Schiedek-Jacht donated their spare time to fully restoring Jan and seven months later when a pristine looking car. I am humbled by the dedication, passion and love of our automotive heritage that this team has shown during the restoration of the Jan the Beetle," said Thomas Schaefer, Chairman and Managing Director of VWSA. It was decided by the team that Jan would be restored to his original condition and colour. As many original components as possible were repaired and restored, and only where required were new components sourced from special dealers in South Africa, Germany and the US. Jan is now the jewel of the AutoPavilion vehicle collection. Thanks to his split rear windshield, Jan is the most desired little Beetle by collectors and enthusiasts alike. Jan proved that he is still fit for a jolly weekend drive after covering over 600 km to the George Motorshow early in February. This was his first drive after full restoration, exactly 67 years 4 months 10 days after he was built. Come and visit Jan at the AutoPavilion in Uitenhage and see some of the upgrades. The AutoPavilion is VWSA's Automotive Experience Centre and Museum. Each year over 30 000 car enthusiasts, school children, tourists, families and friends visit the AutoPavilion.

Coca Cola Dome Olympics in full swing The Coca Cola Dome Olympics held its 2nd time Olympic games at the Dome Sport Complex in Swakopmund on 4 March. The competitive vibe flourished throughout the Dome, from team cheers, to war paints and the nonstop arguments of which team would go first. Anything and everything to give your team the edge, was the motto of the day. Dj Chris Gühring kept the vibe going as competitors moved from station to station. Highlights from the day were the Stepping Stone Autism School competing from ages of 5-9 years, seeing their smiles as they pulled the car and
bounced on the trampolines was especially aspiring. The battle between the Dome Athletes and All Skin No Skill was an epic battle in the under 18 division with all 3 kids being National Inline Hockey players. Watching the defending champions in the Open Division, team capital Pascal Weimann raced over to another team every time his team had just beaten a time. This appeared to be the ongoing event on its own. Results (Fastest times for each event):

Die jarelange tweestryd tussen die twee plaaslike rugbyklubs word môre op die spits gedryf wanneer Kudus en Walvis Baai se eerste en tweede spanne in die eerste liga wedstryde van die jaar teen mekaar te staan kom.
All soccer fans are anxious for the start of the Namibian Newspaper Cup which will commence during the Easter Weekend at the Vineta Sport Stadium in Swakopmund.
“Derby” wedstryde tussen die twee klubs is altyd kliphard en fisies en môre s'n gaan geen verskil wees nie. Kudus oorheers die tweestryd vir etlike jare al, maar draf môre nie as gunstelinge op om daarop voort te bou nie. Talle spelers het besluit die gras is groener aan die oorkant van die pad en by die Dorpspan aangesluit. Alhoewel Kudus nie naastenby dieselfde kwaliteit spelers as laas jaar het nie, kan Walvis Baai hul regmaak vir ' n wedstryd soos min. Soos almal weet niemand kom by die “ Huis van Pyn” en dink hy gaan ' n maklike wedstryd hê nie. Terwyl van die oud Kudu spelers wat by Walvis aangesluit het vir jare die helde van talle jongelinge in die gemeenskap was, kan hul verwag dat hulle alles behalwe as helde môre op Kudu Park ontvang sal word. Terwyl van hulle wel bietjie simpatie kan verwag, is daar enkeles wat geen simpatie van die tuisskare kan verwag nie. Terug by die wedstryd en dis veral voorlangs waar Kudus die wind van voor gaan kry. Walvis beskik oor ‘n massiewe en beweeglike pak voorspelers wat vir Kudus die lewe hel kan maak. Sou die tuisspan egter in die skrums en dryfmaal bewegings hul man kan staan, behoort dit 'n baie gelykop stryd te wees. Agterlangs het Kudus ‘n bloedjonk agterlyn wat, alhoewel hulle vir die eerste keer as 'n span saamspeel, hope spoed het en al oor en oor bewys het dat staal nie dikte nodig het nie. Seniors soos Grandt Nash, Craig Swartz , Richard Forbes en Enzio Kotzee sal môre moet hand opsteek en aan die voorpunt van alle bewegings moet wees om die minder ervare
All 14 regions in the country will compete in this action packed event, whereas Erongo is selected as the host region where all co-ordination's and preparations will be made. Charles Muukua, Erongo football Regional chairman noted that the cup should remain under ownership of Erongo Region even after the end of the tournament (winning). To make sure of this during the school Mid-Term break all teams from Erongo Region will have a training camp until before the start of the tournament, giving the Region about a month preparation. He further continued saying that the school going soccer players from all over the region will all be educated under one roof by means of a selected School in Swakopmund (venue is still being decided) during the preparation of the tournament to endorse training within the afternoons. All accommodation and food will be provided. The Namibian Newspaper cup undergoes a new theme this year; kick reckless driving in Erongo, with the aim to minimize accident occurrences. Erongo is fully equipped with six towns namely; Omaruru, Karibib, Swakopmund, Arandis, Walvis Bay and Daures. All towns within the Region will provide one team each whilst Walvis Bay consisting of rural and urban will provide two teams as well Daures. Die eerste wedstryd skop af om 13:30 wanneer Walvis 2 en Kudus 2 opdraf terwyl die 1 ste spanne om 15:15 die veld vat. Net daarna om 17:00 kom ERA en die West Coast Sharks se derby aan die beurt en ook die wedstryd beloof vir groot opwinding. Die Sharks se groter voorspelers gaan beslis voorlangs hul gesag wil afdwing. Sou ERA egter hul man kan staan voorlangs kan ook die West Coast Sharks hul klaar maak vir 'n lang agtermiddag, want agterlangs beskik Era oor hope talent wat enige span aan flarde kan ruk. Hul aggressiewe inklimspel is ook een van hul groot sterkpunte. Kudus nooi sy getroue ondersteuners uit om môre die tuisspanne tot oorwinnings te kom aanmoedig. Kudus draf môre seker met sy onervaarste span in baie jare op, maar is nietemin oorgehaal om môre sy rou talent ten toon te stel. Soos hulle sê, die name op papier mag goed lyk maar die wedstryd word op die veld gewen ………vra maar die Bulle. Toegangsgeld vir môre is N$20 per volwassene N$10 per skolier en N$10 per motor. Verversings sal te koop wees.
Kavarure victorious in PTA Tennis Series
Bronwyn Kavarure topped the podium against a strong field of tennis ladies during the weekend's Pro Tennis Academy tournament. Hendrina Appollus joined her on the podium in second position with Faith Kahuure in third place in the intermediate ladies category.
2016's Champion, Cleet Farmer, reclaimed top spot in the advanced category ranking after tournament two of nine tournaments in the series. In the first tournament Farmer was defeated by Godwin Husselmann, who this time around got a second place position, with Dudley Minnie joining them on the podium. The young talented Arnaud Marais also moved on top of the ranking in the Green Dot category after beating last tournaments winner, Samuel Mayinoti and third placed Jonathan Lewis. The PTA Tennis Series will continue until the end of this month, 31 March, whilst on 1 April will be the third tournament in the series. All interested players may contact PTA head coach and
