The crew of a rock lobster vessel made the grim discovery on Friday of the decaying carcasses of 86 Dusky Dolphins on the beach at Hottentot Bay, approximately 60 km north of Lüderitz. The skipper immediately notified the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources at Lüderitz. A small team of researchers were dispatched to the scene on Saturday morning. “The scene that greeted us was beyond sad. Altogether, 86 Dusky Dolphins, including two new-borns and several juvenile dolphins were scattered on the beach. All were in an advanced stage of decay”, one researcher reported. Another researcher explained it is unclear as to what may have caused this mass stranding.

Nampol Surprises school- search at Tutaleni High School – 13 troublemakers identified Eileen van der Schyff Nampol members in Walvis Bay paid an unannounced visit to the Tutaleni High School and confiscated undesired items from learners on Friday. Thirteen learners were identified as troublemakers subsequently. In the surprise school search, police confiscated among many items, cell phones, parts scissors, broken pieces of mirror and glass. The Principal of the school applauded the officers for a very professional and coordinated operation. The school was advised to engage the parents of the learners who were identified as troublemakers and to get social workers involved. This was the start of many school search operations in the future. The first one is a reminder to learners that the police will act.

The only possible cause for this is the dolphins might have become disorientated for some reason and accidentally beached themselves. Alternatively they might have rallied around a member of the super pod (bigger than a pod of dolphins which is around twelve individuals) that got itself in trouble. Dusky Dolphins are found in the Southern Hemisphere where they prefer cool currents and inshore waters. They venture offshore. The range of the Dusky Dolphin is patchy with major populations found in South America, Southwestern Africa, New Zealand and various oceanic islands, with some sightings around southern Australia and Tasmania. These dolphins are known for their high jumps and out of the water and acrobatic displays.

Several complaints have been received of late of the rundown condition of the test range where learner drivers are taking their practical driving tests. The test range has no proper road markings and the road surface is dotted with potholes. “How can you expect driving test when from a learner driver there are no proper to pass his or her traffic marks to indicate parking bays or lines showing where you can drive or not?”, asked several parents this week whose children failed their driving tests. “If you fail your driving test you are only allowed a next attempt approximately 21 days. How objective is the person taking the test if he or she fails you on a test terrain where there are no proper road marks and where the road surface is dotted with potholes?”, asked a second parent. Adding it is time consuming and places unnecessary stress on learner drivers. In a somewhat disturbing incident earlier this week a parent

who thought to make a difference only added salt to the existing wound. This person donated paint and hired someone to go and paint the road marks. Instead of a thank you and words of appreciation, the person was reprimanded for doing so without official permission from the local authority. “It was not thus if the person was demarcating his own traffic markings. He mere painted over the existing lines which were faded. As a result of this, the person did not proceed to complete the job, fearing prosecution. Note: is there someone who could volunteer to fix the potholes?

A tour operator taking tourists on daily trips to Sandwich Harbour’s vehicle ended up in the sea on Sunday. It is believed the vehicle got stuck on the beach in heavy sand. Before the vehicle could be pulled free, it was overcome by the incoming tide and breakers. The vehicle was wrecked as the pounding waves rolled it like a toy car. No person was injured in the incident.

Biggest ship in history lifted for dry-dock repairs in Walvis Bay Rudi Bowe

The offshore supply vessel, Far Sleipner, is now the biggest ship in Walvis Bay's history ever to be lifted out of the water for repairs. This 15 000 gross tons work boat was lifted out of the water by Namdock's floating dock, Namdock III. The vessel will spend the next three weeks high and dry for her compulsory 10 years intermediate repairs and maintenance. After placed back in the water more work is to be undertaken alongside. The vessel will then be re-christened from Far Sleipner to Norman Navigator. The vessel sails under a Norwegian flag. The occasion on Friday of the lifting of the vessel by floating dock was utilised by Namdock to showcase its abilities and level of service delivery as the biggest privately owned drydock facility on the west coast of Africa. Those attending the event included Walvis Bay mayor, Alderman Immanuel Wilfried, the Master of the vessel Ronny Stave, Namdock's Acting CEO, Heritha Nankole Muyoba, and the marketing manager of Namdock, Quinton Simon. In fact, it is the ship repair services offered by Namdock which resulted in the owner and operator of the vessel,

the Norwegian registered Solstad Offshore, opting to bring her to Walvis Bay. Far Sleipner's base of operation is at Pointe Noire in the Republic of Congo. It was decided Walvis Bay's close proximity to Pointe Noire, and Namdock's profile as ship repair stakeholder, would make both financial and operational sense to bring the vessel to Walvis Bay for repairs against choosing any other ship repair facility in the region. Namdock (formerly known as Elgin Brown Hamer Namibia (EBHN) is a joint venture between the Namibia Ports Authority and EBH Consortium. The Master Ronny Stave explained several unique features of the vessel which makes it the perfect workboat in the offshore oil and gas industry. Apart from a gross tonnage of approximately 15 000 tons, the vessel has a total length of 143m and carries a crew of 130. The mayor, accompanied by town councillor Paulus Kauhondamwa, were treated on a tour of Namdock's facility and congratulated the company on the investment in both assets and people to grow Walvis Bay as a

ship repair hub on the west coast of Africa. The Acting chief executive, Muyoba said Namdock commits itself to service excellence, not only to ship repair clients but also to Walvis Bay as a town from where it operates and also to provide its employees a safe work environment in which they can grow and add value. “Our Strength is Local. Our employees has been working exceptionally hard for the past three years to deliver a competitive service. Also to ensure that all work occurs in a safe environment. Recently the company celebrated three million man hours without a lost time injury”, the Acting CEO is quoted. Adding vessels that are not working cost money and therefore a key component of Namdock's world class service is a shorter turnaround period from the moment work begins until the vessel is handed back to the client. Also, said Muyoba, Namdock works on between 124 and 142 floating dock projects per year. It is doing the work with about 780 permanent employees and where needed sub-con-

tractors. It counts among the biggest procurement units in Walvis Bay. Namdock's marketing manager, Quinton Simon, echoed the words of Muyoba and explained due to the sheer size of the vessel it was not business as usual on Friday. The vessel's extreme dimension among others meant a total of 423 wooden blocks that had to be placed under the vessel's hull to keep it upright and stable once lifted out of the water. Divers had to work meticulously to stack the wooden blocks up to 3, 2 metres high under the vessels hull. The floating dock was lowered in the water by means of a network of ballast tanks that were flooded with seawater. The dock literally sank and that allowed the Far Sleipner to be floated on the work platform. When the order came

Swerves out to avoid accident and crashes head on into another Eileen van der Schyff

A case of reckless and or negligent driving was opened after two brothers were the cause of a head on collision on the B2 route towards Usakos on Thursday. The troubled started when they collected a newly-purchased Isuzu double cab from Swakopmund. The owner of the new vehicle requested his brother to drive it on his behalf to Windhoek. The owner of the vehicle was following in a second vehicle. Some 30 kilometers from Swakopmund the new Isuzu swerved from the road, but the driver managed to pull it back on the road. The owner of the vehicle who was driving behind the Isuzu swerved to the right as part of an emergency maneuver and in the process struck an oncoming vehicle head-on. Both drivers sustained serious injuries. The one driver suffered a fractured leg and had to be transferred to a Windhoek medical facility.

Yoshi the loggerhead turtle and the big swim Eileen van der Schyff

Yoshi, the loggerhead turtle that was released from Cape Town's Two Oceans Aquarium in 2017, now holds the record for the longest journey of a tracked animal after swimming to Namibian and Angolan waters before turning around and swimming all the way to Australia. Yoshi, in a media statement of the Aquarium got the status of an international celebrity after travelling more than 37 000 km to reach Australia. “This coldblooded reptile has outdone the journey of any marine animal,” The statement reads. The loggerhead swam from Cape Town all along the South West African coastline. Her satellite tracking path shows she passed off Namibia and made a few turns in the waters around Walvis Bay where she then swam towards Southern Angola, turned around and swam all the way back to Cape Town and then she darted straight through the Indian Ocean towards Australia. The turtle is currently just off the Pilbara coast near Point Samson. Yoshi is now protected under Australian law which promotes turtle protection. The aquarium said that Australian officials had agreed to be on standby if

Yoshi nests on the beach so that the battery of her tag can be replaced as it may soon run out. Yoshi's is a beautiful successful rehabilitation story which resulted in the Two Oceans Aquarium establishing a turtle rescue program that focuses on the rehabilitation and release of turtles. Yoshi was brought to Two Oceans Aquarium after the crew of a Japanese fishing vessel found her with a damaged shell. The crew then contacted the aquarium. They contacted the aquarium to ask if we could please come and fetch this little turtle,” were the words of the aquarium's chief executive, Maryke Musson. She further said: "At the time, the aquarium had only been open for two years, so we did not really anticipate keeping sea turtles on display. We did not know all that much, but she crept into everybody's hearts, and settled down really quickly and she had an enormous personality.”

Seven vessels to call up to Thursday

A total of seven vessels are calling at the port of Walvis Bay as from today up to Thursday. The container ship MSC Gabriella is alongside today to load and discharge containers. Tomorrow (11 March) the multi-purpose vessel Blue Master II calls, followed by the tanker ship New Ranger, the offshore supply vessel Posh Rescue and the trawler Mediva Star. On Thursday, the multi-purpose vessel Golden Karoo is alongside as well as the passenger ship Aidamira.

Utuseb Senior Citizens receive parcels Senior citizens of Utuseb last week received good tidings in the form of food parcels. The Municipality of Walvis Bay received donations to the value of N$156 000 to honour its senior citizens and distributed the first set of parcels on 20 December 2019 at Kuisebmond Community Hall and Civic Centre Town Hall. The Utuseb Community received the next batch during the inauguration of the new Utuseb Clinic, which opened its doors on Tuesday. The parcels contained non-perishable food items to supplement the elders. A total of 1,300 parcels were made up and distributed. The sponsors who made it possible are Namibia Ship Chandlers (Pty) Ltd, Freddie Fish Processors, RisCura Consulting Namibia (Pty) Ltd and Starting Right Investment 189.

Olive trees in the desert The Namib Desert is home to 500 Olive trees planted by Magdalene and Ronald Vermaak, a couple from Walvis Bay. The Vermaak family started the olive tree plantation in October of 2014 with the aim to produce proudly Namibian olive oil. The trees are planted on a portion of Farm 37, set aside for urban agriculture. The plantation currently has 500 trees

planted on one hectare. Recently the Mayor of Walvis Bay accompanied by some of the councillors visited the plantation to familiarise themselves with its progress. According to Mr Vermaak, the trees are planted so they form the word PEACE and a smiley face. â€œWe did this to encourage peace in our country and the olive tree represents hope and peace according to the bible,â€? said Vermaak. The Vermaaks hope to also produce olive oil for the international market in the future. Wind and sand encroachment are some of the challenges faced by the plantation. However, the Vermaaks often offer temporary employment to salvagers who visit the dumpsite, to help with sand encroachment and replanting of damaged trees. The Vermaak family also runs a green concept pilot project from their home that trains both unemployed women and men in growing a variety of vegetable crops. The Vermaak family trains these interested people for fee and with the aim to assist them to start agricultural projects for their respective communities.

Namibia at Over 50s Cricket World Cup Rudi Bowe

The Namibian squad is Lennie Louw, Gielie Varmeuler, Ettienne Brits, Francois Erasmus, Basie Baiterdag, Trevor Britten, Gavin Murgatroyd, Louis Nartje, Melt van Schoor, Daneel van der Walt, Willie van Zyl, Ashley Griffiths, Dee Thakur, Leeba Finche (manager), Zafar Muhammad and Rudi Birkenstock. All 12 teams will be involved on match days, during a packed schedule, which will see them play at least seven 45-over games during 13 days – and eight, if they reach the Bowl or Plate final at Claremont CC on March 23 or the Cup Final at Newlands on 24 March. Namibia will open their Over 50s Cricket World Cup campaign against Pakistan on 11 March with their next game on March 13 against Wales, March 15 against England, March 16 against India with their last group game against South Africa on 18 March. The semi-finals will be on 20 March with the Losing Teams' Deciders on 22 March and the Bowl and Plate Finals on 23 March. The two Pools are Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe in Pool A and England, India, Pakistan, Wales, Namibia and South Africain POOL B. All matches start at 10:15.

The six students from the Sylvio Behring Jiu-Jitsu Namibia Academy in Walvis Bay and one from the Stellenbosch University in Cape Town recently participated with about two hundred and fifty students in different divisions at the Abu Dhabi Africa Continental Pro Jiu Jitsu Championship in Cape Town, South Africa. The Namibians won two gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal to put Namibia third on the table with 820 points from fifteen countries and the Sylvio Behring Jiu-Jitsu Namibia Academy in fourteenth place from thirty two academies world-wide. The Abu Dhabi Continental Jiu Jitsu Championship is part of the Abu Dhabi Jiu Jitsu Pro World Ranking and the Abu Dhabi World Professional Qualifying series which is a competition that is managed by UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation and it draws hundreds of high caliber athletes every year. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a self-defence system, martial art, and combat sport system that focuses on grappling with particular emphasis on ground fighting and eventually came to be its own defined combat sport through the innovations, practices, and adaptation of judo. BJJ teaches that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themself against a bigger, stronger, heavier opponent by using leverage and weight distribution to take the fight to the ground, and then applying joint locks and chokeholds to defeat the opponent. BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments and in self-defence situations. Sparring (commonly referred to as "rolling" within the BJJ community) and live drilling play a major role in training and the practitioner's development. BJJ is considered a martial art, a sport, a method for promoting physical fitness and building character,

and a way of life. The president of the Sub Saharan and Southern Africa Association KurdtGeorge said that the championships was a big success and that a successful tournament is not about the number competing but one with no injuriesespecially to the kids. George added that Jiu-Jitsu is the fastest martial arts growing sport in the world with no difference in Africa and he believe that in the next 5-10 years there will be a few World Champions from Africa if we held regular competition and stick to proper systems and competition regulation.
