Visitors to the Walvis Bay Waterfront complained of mounting heaps of smelly garbage that have been accumulating lately at the waste disposal point on the premises. Not only was it unsightly, but several businesses operating at the Waterfront consulted explained there was a twofold issue at play here. Bernhard Esau replaced in N.A. The four Swapo seats in the Namibia’s National Assembly which became vacant late last year with the sacking of Fisheries Minister Bernhard Esau, Justice Minister Sackey Shangala and the resignation of Messers Jerry Ekandjo and Sebastian Karupu has been filled. Swapo-members Ephraim Nekongo, Joel Kapaanda, Festus Marenga and Martha Namundjebo-Tilahun were sworn in earlier this week and will take office until Parliament dissolves on 20 March this year. Although these members replace Esau and Shangala, they were not appointed in the two former ministers’ portfolio’s but only by number as members of the National Assembly. President Hage Geingob last year after the sacking of Esau appointed Namibia’s Attorney-General Albert Kawana as the Acting fisheries Minister. Part of his appointment is to review the awarding of fishing rights and quotas in order to prevent the further plundering of Namibia’s fishing resources and the award of fishing rights and quotas only to the elite and politically connected. Esau and Shangala is currently under arrest along with other suspects in a massive bribes for quota scandal popularly now referred to as Fishrot.

Businesses that use this disposal point says over the festive season the parking lot was filled to the brim every day with vehicles of holiday goers. As a result, the refuse removal truck could not reach the disposal point during scheduled waste removal stops. “We know this is a problem and I think we as stakeholders at the Waterfront will have to meet and sort this problem out once and for all”, one stakeholder said on condition of anonymity. Adding some operators don’t have offices at the Waterfront, yet they dispose of their garbage at this waste point when they disembark from their tourist boats. A second operator urged stakeholders to get together to re-assess the current way in which garbage is disposed as it gives the local marine tourism sector a bad name. “How can you be environmentally sensitive and accountable when you take your tourists on the water, but at your home base on land you neglect that responsibility”, he asked. Note: Late on Wednesday one operator at the Waterfront, who uses the waste disposal point, started to remove the waste at own cost, in an attempt to clear the area.

ground. On Christmas Day a driver was arrested for drunk driving after the vehicle he drove rearended a vehicle on the B2 coastal road at the Dolphin Beach turnoff. The suspect was a driving a white Izuzu pick-up which rearended a Nissan station
wagon in which Zimbabwean nationals were traveling. The occupants of the Nissan sustained minor injuries and were discharged from hospital the next day. Also, an alarming trend is developing where drivers run away from accident scenes, seemingly in attempts prevent drunken driving charges. Four cases were reported where drivers deserted the scenes of accidents. It is a criminal offence to desert the scene of an accident when you were the driver of a vehicle involved in such accident. The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident has a duty to ascertain whether there were injuries and damage to property and has to contact emergency
services. One can only leave the scene of an accident by way of medical evacuation or where an officer of the law directs or allows a driver to leave the scene of the accident after having ascertained the person is not under the influence of an intoxicating substance, has a valid driving license and the vehicle is licensed. Sadly, a South African citizen, Mr. Raymond van Wyk (30), was killed when he lost control of his twowheeler bike and fell. The accident was in the dune belt opposite Langstrand on 29 December. Van Wyk was riding his bike alone in the dunes when the accident occurred. He was only found an hour after the accident and passed away as emergency personnel was taking him on a stretcher to the waiting ambulance.
West Coast Safety Initiative deserves to be applauded for its efforts....... Isaac Chikosi Stakeholders of West Coast Safety Initiative (WCSI) took it upon themselves this festive season to hand out to vehicles drivers information packs. A pack contains a booklet that provides traffic statistics and general guidelines to follow to enhance road safety. Also contained in this booklet are emergency numbers and steps to take in the event of an emergency on the road. In total, 25 000 emergency packs were distributed by WCSI over the festive season. Many drivers and visitors to the coast applauded the initiative. WCSI every year goes out of its way to make a positive contribution to reduce accidents, injuries and road deaths and deserves to be applauded for their effort.

Sharlien Tjambari Sedney Saban Somseb (37) is behind bars for the alleged rape of a minor. Somseb appeared in the Swakopmund Magistrate Court this past Tuesday on charges of two counts of rape, two counts of attempted murder and two counts of kidnapping. He now applied for bail. At the time of his arrest in October last year, Somseb was a teacher at a primary school in Swakopmund. It is alleged that Somseb raped a Grade 9 pupil in Swakopmund. It is believed that the minor was a student of the teacher when she was in Grade 7 a few years ago. Somseb appeared in front of
Magistrate Nelao Paula Brown and State Prosecutor Johannes Shangadi. His case was remanded to 16 January for bail application. The family and friends of the victim demands that the accused remain behind bars while awaiting his trial and that no bail should be granted to him.
Operation Kalahari Desert Eileen van der Schyff Operation Kalahari Desert was conducted on 1 January in Walvis Bay, Swakopmund and Hentiesbay with the help of manpower, Nampol, Namibian Defence Force (NDF), Municipality Traffic officers and members of the Community forums. Stop and searches in Swakopmund was conducted on 230 men and 96 women on the streets in search of dangerous weapons. 160 Vehicles were stopped and searched. 9 Knives and a pepper spray were found on people walking at night. Six liquor outlets were given a fine of N$ 2000 for operating after hours.
Two people were detained for drunkenness and disorderly behaviours. Two people were charged for overloading and another two for driving without a license. One robbery case was reported in Mondesa. A 37-year-old man was robbed of his wallet and cell phone by four thugs. They
were all apprehended and everything was recovered. The victim chose not to lay charges. Walvis Bay was relatively quiet. Two reports of domestic violence were attended to. One in Kuisebmond and one in Narraville. During the morning hours, there was a fight reported in Langstrand.
Fireworks remain a concern The spokesperson for the Namibian Police in the Erongo Region, W/O Ileni Shapumba stated his concern around the use of fireworks on Wednesday, 1 January. Fireworks was the cause of countless pets running around in confusion and fear on New Year's Eve. The SPCA in Swakopmund was filled with lost dogs picked up from the street. Fireworks traumatises animals and pet owners should know to keep them inside and feeling safe during times like this. If
you are missing your dog or cat, please call your closest SPCA. “It not only has a negative effect on animals, but on some families too, including children and the elderly.� Said W/O Shapumba. W/O Shapumba went on to say that people should be considered of others and
that local authorities have control over the rules and regulations of fireworks, but the police work with t h e m . W / O Shapumba stated that the police have the power to charge unlicensed people setting off fireworks under the Explosives Control Act.

A secret vegetable garden Rudi Bowe
A secret vegetable garden located in the heart of Walvis Bay. About 15 years ago Mr Ronald and Mrs Magdalene Vermaak started a small-scale vegetable garden in Union Street of the town.

The couple kicked off the project with tomatoes, beans, celery, beetroot, cucumbers, spinach and goose berries (appelliefies), lettuce, green and red peppers they grew in the back yard of their house in Walvis Bay. The garden blossoms as a self-sustaining initiative and provides much needed food and job security for the couple themselves and for unemployed fa-
milies. The couple provides vegetables to some hotels and shops in the harbour town. Mr Vemaak also provides training to those with no income. He already trained more than twenty people mostly from the north of Namibia. He also helped well known businessman Manny Fernandez with his vegetable garden project. Vermaak said that all vegetable seeds he uses are organic and does not
contain any chemicals. Walvis Bay Mayor, Alderman Immanuel Wilfred visited the vegetable garden and was very much surprised to see such a nice and beautiful garden in town and expressed how pleased he is to see that there are still people that are willing to help others make a living for themselves. “I would love to be a student and since I am going on retirement, I would love to start with my own small little garden at my farm to provide food security for my f a m i l y. ” M a y o r Wilfred said. The Vermaak family are also the proud owners of an olive farm in the desert close to Walvis Bay. On the farm they have between 400 and
500 olive trees. Mr Vermaak said that he would like to train unemployed women on the olive farm but first need to put up screens to protect the trees from the wind. This will help the trees to provide more olives. Mr Vermaak is appealing to the government or any organisation to help them save the olive farm and by doing so grow it even bigger. Mr Ronald and Mrs Magdalene Vermaak who is willing to offer free training through the Office of the Mayor. “It is something we love doing and will be more than happy to offer our training for free.” Said Mr

Passenger liner season in full swing Passenger liner season is in full swing in this part of the world. Only hours ago the passenger liner MSC Nautica departed Walvis Bay after staying over alongside for two days. She returns here on 22 January. On Sunday, the passenger ship Artania is alongside, followed by MSC Orchestra on Tuesday. Orchestra also returns to Walvis Bay for a day’s stay on Sunday 19 January. On Thursday of next week (16 January 2020) AIDAmira is again calling at Walvis Bay. She too returns to Walvis Bay on 30 January. The passenger liners which stay more than one day and frequently returning to Walvis Bay form part of a standard round-trip cruises between Durban, South Africa and Walvis Bay.

Swakopmund Rotary Club has heart for the elderly Isaac Chikosi Close to twenty families headed by elderly residents in the DRC location were ecstatic yesterday when they received food hampers from the Swakopmund Rotary Club. Former Deputy Mayor Clr. Maria Elago, an active Rotarian handed over the hampers. The food hamper handover is an annual initiative to help support the elderly in the community, especially those struggling financially. “ Before joining council, I worked as a nurse at the DRC clinic”, said Clr. Elago. “Many of the old people here are struggling and find it hard to make ends meet.”
Evident were the smiles on the faces of the old people who received the food hampers. Elizabeth de Weer is a pensioner fom the DRC, struggling with failing eyesight, expressed her gratitude towards the act of kindness shown by the Rotary Club. Andries Klaste, who is in his eighties applauded the gesture by Clr. Elago. “It is a
blessing to have people who care around us.” Said Klaste. Speaking at the handover, Clr. Elago said: “We can all do our part to help the needy in our communities. It is important to have a caring heart.” Elago was joined by Rachel Harris, who is also a Rotarian as well as Victro Ouses.

Hotel d'Avignon Newsletter January 2020 The widespread rains have been very welcome, and Namibians all celebrate the possibilities of the New Year. 2019 was not a year to be remembered well, with the drought, the low economy and the terrible fraudulent activities exposed in the fishing industry, so we hope and pray for a better 2020. This is an important year for us – we have the Municipal elections in November 2020 and this year, more than any other year, we realize the importance of our votes. Please mark the date in your calendar and ensure, ahead of time, that you are registered, and in the voting line to cast your vote on the critical day. Speak to your children; your neighbours and your friends and encourage them to vote too. It will make a difference. Swakopmund belongs to us all, and we need to have a voice. This Association will guide you through the whole
process, but we ask you to widen our reach, and to be proactive in gaining more votes. The Festive Season reflected the poor economy in that restaurants and shops were not over-busy through the whole period as they have been in past seasons, though there was a spike in the week of Christmas and New Year. No parking, traffic queues stretching out of town, and busy shops and restaurants – we were all glad to see it as we know that our businesses need this boost of income. It has been interesting to see that the beach at the
Mole was busy, but the beach out at the Vineta Point was sometimes busier, as the braai facilities and general area attract a lot of r e s i d e n t s . Unfortunately, in this area the seabed drops sharply down so it is not safe swimming, and there were some narrow escapes as a result. Over the years the municipality has been strict about advertising on garden walls, and many residents have been told to paint over advertisements which have been put up, but it seems as if this by-law has been forgotten, or is being neglected, as these advertisements are

Langstrand Kamp Omdat ek van nature ‘n positiewe mens is wil ek begin deur te sê dat die ontvangs personeel by Langstrand kampeer area baie goed is. Die badkamers het altyd warm water en word goed skoon gehou. Die skoonmakers hou die hele terrein ook mooi skoon. En ‘n baie goeie ding is dat quad bikes nie meer in die kampeer area raas nie. Baie dankie daarvoor. Maar ek voel dit is uiters belangrik dat ek my en my mede kampeerders se ontevredenheid rondom sekuriteit asook ongerief onder die Munisipaliteit van Walvisbaai bring. Dit is baie ongerieflik vandat die sekuriteit die een hekkie toegemaak het. Ek kamp elke jaar die afgelope 33 jaar hier en het hierdie jaar weer duur betaal om hier op langstrand se kampeer area te kom kamp. Hierdie jaar is die eerste jaar in 33 jaar dat ek hier kom en van gesteel word. Alles moet nou ewe skielik in tente toegesluit word. Die hekkie wat toegang gee na die strand word
sommer nou gesluit. Die Munisipaliteit van Walvisbaai maak dit nou so moeilik vir ons. Ek is 68 jaar oud en stap omtrent sewe keer ‘n dag strand toe van waar ons kamp. Ons wat aan die Noord-end van die kamp kampeer, moet al die pad suidwaarts loop, om die eerste ry kampe, om by die kampeer area se enigste hekkie uit te kan loop strand toe. Nie nog te praat van terugkom nie. Vir ons kinders wat by die see speel is dit nou onveilig, want sou daar iets gebeur is daar geen manier hoe ons vining by hulle kan kom nie. Kampeerders is keelvol en wil eenvouding die heining planke uitskop vir ‘n korter pad strand toe. Die sekuriteit is nie bestaande. Daar was drie stoele by my kampeer plek, stand 29, gesteel en ‘n paar dae later ook ‘n swart trommel en drie stoele langs Elmarie Niewoudt se tent by “Stand 23” gesteel. Sy vind dit baie onaangenaam en het besluit om op te pak en vroeër terug huis toe te ry. Langstrand gaan sy kampeerders verloor teen hierdie trant. Met
net een sekuriteits wag op diens op ‘n slag, is dit geen wonder dat ons besteel word nie. Dit is onmoontlik vir net een sekeriteitswag om die hele kamp te patroleer en te beveilig in die nag. Ek stel voor dat vir die veiligheid van kampeerders oor die vakansie seisoen, stel ten minste drie of vier sekeriteits beamptes aan. Hou asb ons hekkie oop en laat een sekeriteits beampte die hekkie en heinig oppas en nog een kan die hoof pad kant van die parkeer area oppas. Langstrand gaan baie gou permanente en gereelde vakansie kampeerders soos ons verloor as dinge nie verbeter nie. Ons versoek dat die Munisipaliteit van Walvisbaai asseblief aandag hieraan sal gee. Ons versoek dat julle die hekkie 21:00 in die aand sluit en weer 6:00 in die oggend oopsluit. Nie dat die sluit van die hekkie enigsins help nie, want die heining is laag genoeg om oor te klim en om stoele oor die heining te tel is ‘n maklike taak. Die planke van die heining kan ook maklik uitgeskop word. Ek praat namens baie kampeerders wat nou genoeg gehad het en ons voel dat die enigste oplossing is om sigbare sekuriteits beamptes op die terrein te hê gedurende die vakansie seisoene wanneer daar baie kampeerders is as ook wanneer daar baie dagbesoekers is. Playtime Sports Development Trust (SDT) held a holiday program at the Atlantis Sport Club Walvis Bay from 9 to 20 December.
The holiday program was held to end off the 2019 season of the soccer academy. It was a big success with about 50 children in the different age groups ranging from nine to sixteen years old. The new season of the academy will start on 15 January 2020, at Atlantis soccer field from 14:00-16:00 sharp.

To u r n a m e n t d i r e c t o r s M a b a s a Mubatapasango and Nqo Moyo said that 8 women and 18 men from Windhoek, Henties Bay, Swakopmund, Walvis Bay and a few from South Africa participated in the tournament. The winner in the men section was Wikus Myburgh from South Africa with Deon van Dyke as the runner up. Linique Theron was the winner of the women's section as the beat Megan Lambart in the final. From 26 to 29 December 2019, SFC Sport Club hosted the annual Xmas Cup. The Xmas Cup is the oldest annual football tournament in Namibia and has been ongoing since 1956. This year we had sixteen teams taking part compared to last year's ten. We had eight teams in the League Division (SFC, Falcons, AmaTuks, Infinity, SFC U20, TFC1, TFC2 and Java Java) and 8 Teams in the Social Division (SFC Old Crocks, Germania 1, Germania 2, Miskuzzi, Libertas, Sparta Utd FC, Chillas FC and Smart Guys. In the twenty matches that took place over the 4 days of football, over 100 goals were scored. In the League Division the Defending Champions, SFC got knocked out in the Group stages. The young team of Falcons made it through the group stages to meet TFC 2 in the Semi Finals. The other League Semi Final was contended between Xmas Cup regulars AmaTuks and first-time participants Java Java. Falcons and Java Java won their respective Semi Finals to progress to the Finals. The 3rd/4thPlayoff match in the League Division was won by AmaTuks who played against TFC 2. The Final was a beautiful Goal Festival with Java Java winning 4-2 against the young team of Falcons. In the Social Division, Defending Champions SFC Old Crocks also got knocked out in the Group Stages. Newly Formed Social Club Sparta Utd FC of Walvis Bay played their first Semi Finals
against Students Team Germania 1 from Germany. The other Semi Final was contested between Chillas FC and Miskuzzi. Sparta Utd FC and Chillas FC won their respective Semi Finals. The 3rd/4thPlayoff match in the Social Division was won by Miskuzzi who beat Germania 1-0. The Final was a very good match which ended 1-1 and had to go to Penalties. Tempers boiled over and a player of the Chillas FC team physically assaulted a spectator and some verbally assaulted Referees and members of the Organization Committee. As SFC Sport Club sets their values highly on being a family orientated club and have the responsibility of the safety of the players and spectators alike, the Organization Committee had to take drastic measures against Chillas FC. Not all players of Chillas FC where involved in the unsavory incident, but as football is a team sport it is the responsibility of each team to keep their players in tack. The Organization Committee had to take the hard decision of disqualifying Chillas FC from the tournament. This resulted in Sparta UTD FC being declared winners of the 2019 Xmas Cup Social Division and Miskuzzi and Germania 1 moved up to 2nd and 3rd place respectively. For the first time SFC Sport Club also hosted the inaugural Xmas Cup Xlassico which took place on
the 29th December 2019. This is a 7 a side event for footballers over the age of 40. This is to be an annual event, and the 2019 edition was competed with SFC(Swakopmund), Atlantis and Kaiser Chiefs (both Walvis Bay) and SKW (Windhoek). Matches where played in a Round Robin basis. Atlantis won the inaugural Xmas Club Xlassico 2019, with Kaiser Chiefs coming in at 2nd place. SKW took 3rd and SFC where 4th. We hope that the 2020 edition will have more +40 teams. The Tournament was a huge success except for the one incident. many spectators and players alike had a great time during the four days of football. The Xmas Cup Organization Committee can't wait to host the 2020 edition of the Xmas Cup, and we want to make the event an even bigger spectacle, with a new format also on the cards The SFC Sport Club organizing committee would like to take this opportunity to thank the following who make this Possible. The Bank Windhoek Beach Volleyball Bash 2019 Pro Division winners Dark & P Photo contributed The seventh and final Timeout Beach Series 2019 event of the year, the Bank Windhoek Beach Volleyball Bash 2019, part of the Tafel Lite Beach Bash 2019, was hosted by Namib Rage Events. Nine teams competed in the Pro Division and nineteen teams in the Social Division. The competition was very competitive and the actionpacked tournament with beach volleyball of the high quality was on display. The winner of the Bank Windhoek Beach Bash Volleyball Pro division is team Dark & P as they defeated Sand Machines 2-1 (2116: 21-18) in the final. The team Gabs from Botswana defeated the Kudos VC 2-1 (21-19; 21-11: 1512) to end third in
the Pro division. The Social competition was won by Swakopmund Municipal Volleyball Club. They defeated Six Pack 2-0
(21-9: 21-11) in the final and Bash Oldies defeated The North 2-1 (21-15: 21-7) to end in third place.
