Despite the pivotal role parents play in the education of their children, it is ultimately teachers and learners themselves who bear most of the responsibility for performing well at school. Teachers need to prepare well for lessons and learners need to nurture a responsible approach towards their scholastic performance from early age. This was said recently by the Director of Education in Erongo, John Awaseb, in an interview with namib times. “Parents can only be blamed if they don't properly care for their children’s material and psychological needs. Poor performance at school can only be blamed on teachers and learners”, explained Awaseb. He acknowledged the role parents play in the education of their children, but quality tutoring at school means children are better equipped to conduct homework. Equally teachers need to take great care in reviewing children's homework and to provide adequate feedback for them to understand and assimilate the work at hand. Continues on page 2

Children too need to take accountability and ensure they work and learn hard at school and show commitment to complete their homework. According to Awaseb it cannot be denied that in many instances teachers are not committed. “We have well qualified teachers compared to other regions, but many are not fully committed. He added it is a known fact many teachers don't prepare properly for lessons and claim they are experienced and have been teaching for many years. Hence, they don't need intensive preparations. According to Awaseb that is not an acceptable argument in favour of teachers and called upon teachers to up their preparations for lessons and to lead by example. Hard working and committed teachers mean children respect them and follow their example.
Unusual heavy lift operation off Walvis Bay

The heavy lift vessel Xiang He Kou arrived off Walvis Bay over the weekend and is preparing to lift two offshore supply tugs out of the water for transportation by sea to India.

Xiang He Kou is classed a semi-submersible heavy lift vessel which means she can partially sink in order to position her cargo deck under the water. The vessel submerges by flooding special ballast tanks with seawater. Once submerged, the two tugs will be pulled onto the cargo deck. The seawater is then pumped from the ballast tanks and the vessel fully re-floats, lifting the two tugs clear from the water and ready for transport. The two supply tugs, Nelson and Bobby, formed part of the Tidewater fleet in West Africa's offshore oil and gas industry. The vessels became obsolete and was placed on anchorage off Walvis Bay for the past months. The two vessels were in the meantime purchased from Tidewater and is now destined for India where a decision will be made whether to refurbish the vessels again or sell it to a shipbreaking yard to scrap the vessels. ·It was confirmed the part of the operation where the vessels are lifted clear of the water will take some 24-hours.

The Swakopmund Neighbourhood Watch and residents of Schwester Fried Street in Vineta caught a burglar at around 04:00 on Monday. A call was received by the Swakopmund Neighbourhood Watch, a burglary was in progress at a house in Schwester Frieda Street in Vineta. Members responded and at the same time residents woken by the commotion also joined forces. One man was caught. He had a laptop computer and a wallet in his possession which was allegedly stolen from that particular house during the burglary. The accused was handed to the Namibian Police.

A major motivation for the establishment of leading local pipeline rehabilitation technology provider Aegion South Africa was the deteriorating state of much of Southern Africa's pipeline infrastructure. Visiting ships and big sport events drew thousands to WB waterfront Floris Steenkamp
The Walvis Bay Waterfront became a beehive of activities on Saturday with literally thousands of people flocking to the area to be part of several events that took place at the same time. The passenger ship, Amsterdam called at Walvis Bay on Saturday and several hundred passengers disembarked for pre-booked local tours. The passengers converged on the port’s south gate, but also close to 150 street vendors were in the area selling African curio to the passengers as they exited the port gates. At the same time the Brazilian naval vessel Amazonas called on Saturday and was open for visits by the public. Dozens of locals queued at the port’s
south gate with hopes of gaining entry from there. The convergence at the south gate was further supplemented by an influx of people for the annual Canoe Battle of the Dolphin Schools which was held at the Walvis Bay Angling Club. If taken into account this very popular event sees 16 - 20 teams entering each year, and each team made up of ten team mates, the estimates are that close to 1500 people attended the event [spectators included]. The Walvis Bay waterfront is also a popular restaurant spot which not only lures
dozens of locals each Saturday, but also visitors. In this instance many visitors who attended the Buco Desert Sport Festival last week. The festival concluded on Saturday and had a total of 570 learners attending, many from schools as far afield as South Africa. It also drew a huge turnout of spectators from across Namibia and from South Africa. Many of these visitors took the opportunity to visit the waterfront and added to the much appreciated and much valued congregation of people in the harbour town’s tourism heart.

Unique seismic research vessel alongside Floris Steenkamp
The seismic research vessel Ramform Hyperion calls at the port of Walvis Bay this week for a crew change, loading of equipment and to bunker up supplies. It is the vessel's maiden call to Walvis Bay after her commissioning in March 2017. Hyperion's sister ship, Ramform Atlas, is a known visitor to Walvis Bay. The vessels are uniquely constructed in a wedge-shape hull design that allows for bigger and safer workspaces on the aft-deck to launch seismic equipment into the sea. A seismic survey vessel's main purpose is to map geological compositions below the seabed and in doing so provide data to the offshore oil and gas industries to determine whether there are viable fossil fuel deposits in any given area to warrant further exploration activities. The job is accomplished by launching geo-strings, some around 10 kilometers long, into the sea from the ship. These strings are placed under high pressure by means of pumping compressed air into it. The pressurized strings are then decompressed at once to create a massive explosion of sound. As the soundwaves travel through the seabed, hi-tech instruments onboard the vessel collects seismic data as the sound bounces off the different subterranean geological formations. These seismic sounds are tell-tales whether certain formations hold gas or crude oil. Seismic data is crucial for the offshore oil and gas industries to prove there are viable deposits and to attract investors in subsequent exploration activities. As the global oil- and gas exploration industry is very competitive, it goes without saying that not a word is available as to what Ramform Hyperion's next destination would be to conduct sub-sea seismic surveys.

Usakos’ fire truck is currently in for repairs and it prompted the Karibib fire brigade to respond to the scene. Although the building was almost complete destroyed it remains positive to see how the two towns’ management work together and also residents who jumped in to assist.

The roll-on roll-off vehicle carrier, Columbia Highway calls at the port of Walvis Bay on Thursday, to discharge second hand vehicles destined for several markets in Namibia’s neighbouring Zambia. Vehicle carriers have become a familiar site, as the port of Walvis Bay is the import hub for the Southern African second vehicle imports.

Walvis Bay mayor welcomes vehicle Hofmeyr hostel to be turassembly plant’s ned into classrooms opening later this year
The Director of Education for Erongo region Mr John Awaseb this week confirmed to namib times that the Ministry of Education is planning to shut down the Hofmeyr hostel and will turn it into classrooms to resolve both the immediate and medium-term shortages of school classrooms in Swakopmund. The hostel was flooded by rains this week and it seems at this stage the damage would not be repaired, but that the hostel would cease to exist in the foreseeable future. "We wanted to sell the hostel three/four years ago, but we could not manage because the Government refused. Now we are planning to close the Hofmeyr hostel and convert the hostel into classrooms because we have shortages of classrooms in Swakopmund", explained Awaseb. According to Awaseb children living in this hostel are from other towns in Erongo and the DRC informal settlement. The plan is to give
children from the DRC settlement preference and to entice parents of learners who are receiving schooling at Swakopmund but living elsewhere in Erongo to return their children to the other towns with schools. “They can just go back to Usakos, Arandis etc. and then still receive schooling there”. Although preference is given to DRC settlement children, this too will not be a permanent arrangement, as there is a school under construction next to Hanganeni Primary school which will be closer for these children to attend. 9th Street renamed after late Prison Chief The Council of the Municipality of Walvis Bay in Tuesday night's monthly council meeting, approved the renaming of 9th Street in the harbour town to (Fwafwa) Johnson Mabakeng Street. That is to honour the late Johnson Mabakeng who was the Ministry of Correctional Services' Deputy Commissioner for Prisons who died at the age of 45 in July 2006. Mabakeng's death was unexpected and sent shockwaves through the country at the time. He was hailed for his work excellence and Correctional Services mourned his loss at such a young age.Mabakeng joined the pre independence prison services in South West Africa in 1982 and was promoted to Deputy Commissioner of Prisons in September 1996. ·9th Street runs in an easterly direction from 6th Road across Sam Nujoma Avenue, Hage Geingob Street, Theo Ben Gurirab Street and Nangolo Mbumba Avenue to the Walvis Bay Prison. The vehicle assembly plant that will commence operations in Walvis Bay by the close of 2018, will produce vehicles exclusively for Opel South Africa and Peugeot/Citroën South Africa. These entities will redistribute these vehicles on the auto markets in SADC. This first glimpse of local knowledge into this auto manufacturer plan development. It was provided on Tuesday night by the mayor of Walvis Bay, Alderman Immanuel Wilfried, in his monthly statement during the monthly council meeting. The Mayor confirmed he was briefed on the matter by the International Industrial Projects Manager for the Middle East and Africa Region, Fabrice Verastegui on the some weeks ago, a press statement with very limited information over this vehicle assembly plant, hit the Namibian public via the media.
More specific information is emerging. The mayor went on to say 50 direct jobs would be created at the vehicle assembly plant and 200 indirect jobs as sub-contracting parties would get the manufacturing plant up and running. Shotokan Academy honours Karateka Sharlien Tjambari
Shotokan Karate Academy International (SKAI) held their National Senior Black Belt Grading at the Dome in Swakopmund. The emphasis of this grading was on the senior karateka striving to obtain 2nd degree black belts. The successful karateka were honoured at this event. According to the Chief Instructor of SKAI, Sensei Willem Burger, all karateka who graded, had to submit theoretical papers on various subjects such as basic fighting concepts in some instances. For the higher grades, more sophisticated and complex subjects were covered, requiring analysis of the science behind optimising power on fighting techniques through the correct application of body dynamics. These papers had to comply with a very high standard, and were moderated until the required standard was met. “Only when satisfied with the presentation of papers were graders allowed to move on to the practical aspect of the grading, where they were tested on aspects like proficiency in techniques, proficiency in forms, proficiency in combat, fitness, etiquette and procedure, neatness and attitude, eye position and concentration and self-control”, said Burger. Burger outlined the way to obtain a black belt during the grading ceremony. He mentioned that some of the main traits of a black belt, which are installed through training is loyalty, courage and the ability to grid ones teeth and persist, even in the face of adversity. “These are very important traits, given the challenges that we all face in modern times”, he added. Burger continues: “For every 10 000 people that join a Karate school, half will drop out within 6 months, and from these students, about 1000 will complete a year of training before quitting. Approximately 500 students will study for 2 years, but only 100 will make it to three years. Usually only 1 or 2 will progress, and be successful in obtaining their 2nd black belt, of whom only one will progress to teach others as he/she has been taught. In other words, only 1 in 10 000, is a true Black Belt”. The karateka who graded and who were honored on Friday, were: Junior Black Belt - Lee Thomas, Shodan (First Degree Black Belt) - Kyle Burger, Retief Theron, Mayvonne Swart, René Giliomee, Samuel Maasdorp and Linda Huysamen. Nidan (2nd Degree Black Belt) - Keith Openshaw, Devano Diergaardt, Nicolaas Swart, Christof Huysamen, Hermna Van Zyl, Reynard Van Zyl, Cain Hartman, Yolande De Beer, Louisa Liesching, Marchelle De Jager, El-Maree Kotze and Jean-Pierre Bottazolli, 3rd Degree Black Belt, Sandan - Suzelle Pronk Yondan (4th Degree Black Belt - André Pienaar Godan (5th Degree Black Belt - Georg Schrurz. The karateka each received a certificate and a black belt, marked with their and the Academy's name.

Gymnasts off to Egypt Four Junior Namibian gymnasts will be making their way to Cairo, Egypt at the end of April. These gymnasts will be competing at the 14th African Gymnastics Championships in Trampoline and Rhythmic Gymnastics. The championships also serve as the African qualification event for the upcoming Youth Olympic Games taking place in October in Argentina. Countries competing at the African Championships: Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Cape Verde, South Africa and Namibia. The Namibian team will be accompanied by three officials playing their part as coaches and judges.
