Four young Swakopmund residents were involved in a deadly car accident on the C14 gravel road in the vicinity of the Gaub Pass on Tuesday evening. The accident claimed the life of 18-year-old Saskia de Beer. Two of the occupants who survived the accident were Grade 12 learners of the Swakopmund Private School. They only hours earlier wrote their final exams. According to one of the parents the friends were on their way to go camping in the Namib Naukluft Park for three days. As some still attended school that morning they only left later in the day. They were travelling

in a Nissan NP300 four wheel drive pick-up and were pulling a camping trailer. At about 22:00, about 50 kilometers before Solitaire at the first descent of the Gaub Pass, the driver allegedly lost control over the vehicle. Sour-

ces speculate the camping trailer was the cause, resulting in the pick-up to ultimately overturn and come to a rest on its roof. There were four occupants in the vehicle. The 19-year-old female driver is a Swakopmund resident. Her

injuries were described as minor. De Beer, who was working in Swakopmund, passed away at the scene. The remaining two occupants were learners of the Private School Swakopmund (PSS). NamPol intervenes at Paheye Primary School in Omaruru Sharlien Tjambari This week members of the Namibian Police had to cut down locks from the gates of Paheye Primary School in Omaruru after parents changed the locks on the gates on Monday and refused to remove them to keep learners from entering the school premises. The incident is directly linked to parents' dissatisfaction with the exodus of good teachers who are not happy with the school anymore.

Parents allegedly locked down the school after they learned that teachers at the school were resigning due to various issues with the school's Principal, Martha Garises. According to sources, a total of 430 learners of Paheye Primary School did not

attend school on Monday due to the lockdown. The showdown between parents and the principal started at the beginning of the year when Garises was appointed as the school principal. Parents were not happy with the Ministry of Education's decision and felt that Garises did

The Namibian Police's Regional Commander in Erongo, Commissioner Andreas Nelumbu confirmed to namib times he ordered police officers at Omaruru to intervene in the matter. He instructed police officers to tell the parents to remove the changed locks. “I told them if the parents refuse to remove the locks, the officials should cut them. That was done and so some pupils are going to school now, but not everybody is going to school because the influence is so big. Some pupils, who want to attend school, are left to do so. Others stay away in solidarity with dissatisfied parents, said Commissioner Nelumbu. Nelumbu says the “situation is very bad” because some people do not think of the future of the children. He added that he has letters on his table from parents of pupils at Paheye Primary School.

“They are notifying us that they want to have a peaceful demonstra-tion from 10-30 November. I informed the station comman-der at Omaruru to inform them that we have no problem with a demonstration, as long as they are doing it at least 500 metres away from the school premises. Learners who want to attend school should not be affected in any way”. If these guidelines are not honoured, we cannot allow the demonstration to continue, said Commissioner Nelumbu. Nelumbu also explained the parents do not even have a petition attached to their letter. “The parents fail to understand that their solution is not at the school but at the Ministry of Education. The principal is already their target in this whole thing and they have no answer for the children, unless they go to the ministry of education. We are observing that school. We have deployed police officers at the school.” Garises could not be reached for comment.

Swakopmund is fast making a comeback as the beer brewing capital of Namibia. A unique, new craft brewery is operating at Swakopmund since the end of September. It is called the Namib Dunes Craft Brewery and their product is now on sale at various restaurants and stores in Swakopmund. The two partners and brewers are Du Preez Calitz, who started brewing in his garage two years ago, and André Genis. Initially the team experimented with different recipes and brewed various beers. After noticing a business opportunity, the two visited craft brewers in South Africa and decided to go bigger. The brand-new brewing equipment arrived in Swakopmund in April 2017. With the assistance of family members, especially their sons, they built the brewery at Eastern Concepts complex located in the industrial area.

They then started experimenting with different recipes. “Our intention is to brew an Indian Pale Ale, a Blonde Ale, a Weissbier, an Irish Red and a Belgian Wittbier. So far, we have finalised our recipes for the Pale Ale and the Blonde Ale and are supplying this to the market and we are receiving great responses”, Calitz said to namib times. The beer is available in a number of restaurants and bottle stores in Swakopmund. “We have received requests from interested parties all over Namibia but at present we are limited by the capacity of our equipment”, he said.

Driving license revoked for drunken driving Walvis Bay resident Elizabeth Cronjeâ€™s driving license was revoked for one year, and she was slapped by a fine of N$20 000 or one year imprisonment, after Magistrate John Sindano found her guilty last week of drunken driving. Cronje was arrested on 6 February this year. As this was the fourth time that she was arrested and charged for drunken driving, a request for direct imprisonment for a period of 18 months was handed in by the state prosecutor, Sylvia Kauluma. In 2012 Cronje paid fines of N$6 000 and N$8 000 respectively and in 2015 paid a fine of N$10 000 for drunken driving convictions. The court wanted to revoke her driver's license in 2015, but she then pleaded with the Magistrate she is an estate agent and that due to her work she is in need of her driving license. Court records show during a previous court appearance Cronje told the court she had learned a lesson and would never drink and drive again. Walvis Bay municipal traffic chief Eben Platt welcomed the convictions. â€œThe traffic department welcomes the amount that is set for the fine and that her driver's license been revoked by the magistrate for such a period. The traffic department supports the request made by the by the state prosecutor for direct imprisonment. Direct imprisonment for drunken driving is something the Ministry of Justice has to look into. With the festive season on hand the message is clear: stay away behind the steering wheel when you are under the influence of alcohol. Not even money will save you now.

Annual Brunch Gathering for Cancer supported overwhelmingly Women Who Care hosted yet another successful ladies' brunch in aid of the Cancer Association of Namibia. The South African celebrity Lizz Meiring (aka Molly) was the celebrity guest to the event. The event was held at the Walvis Bay Town Hall on Saturday morning and saw hundreds of women turning out to support this annual brunch gathering. Several guest speakers shared their experiences in their respective journeys with cancer. They also motivated those battling cancer to keep up the good fight. Also speaking at the event was Dr Annelie Zietsman who shared with the audience cancer statistics in Namibia and how the prevalence of cancer grew in Namibia. Zietsman is an oncologist from Windhoek and said many small lifestyle changes could possibly prevent cancer. The event gave a true sense to “Women Who Care”. Quarrel over bottle of wine ends in bloody death A man bleeds death between 06:00-06:30 on Saturday in Ekuatalike Street, in the DRC informal settlement after an alcohol-fuelled, violent rage during an argument with his girlfriend over a bottle of Tassenberg wine. The deceased was identified as Joel Somseb (37). According to Nampol spokesperson in Erongo, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, Somseb engaged in an argument with his live-in partner, Ms Rosalia Afrikaner (44). Afrikaner bought a bottle of Tassenberg and refused to share with Somseb. During this argument Somseb allegedly slapped his girlfriend twice in the face. She entered their home without retaliating to the assault. Somseb decided to move out of the house, but said he will first destroy everything which he had contributed to as improvements to the house. Penguin population on a sharp decline During the past few weeks four injured and malnourished African Penguins were rescued in the area of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. They are recovering in the care of the Seabird and Penguin Rehabilitation Centre in Swakopmund. Since 1997, Dr Sandra Dantu and Mark Boorman have been taking care of injured penguins, found by the public along the central coast – but this has been the quietest year so far with the least number of penguins they have taken in for care. Under normal circumstances one would argue this is a good sign, but just the opposite is true. Finding fewer penguins each year that need care simply means there are less penguins on our coastline. "It is a big concern", explained Dr Dantu to namib times. The population of the Africa penguin along the Namibian coast is on a sharp decline. Once abundant, the species is facing extinction. The Cessna 210 that made an emergency landing on the B2 coastal road near Langstrand on Thursday late afternoon was flown out again by an experienced pilot on Saturday. Traffic on the B2 coastal road was brought to a standstill to allow for the pilot to take off from the main road. Dozens of people witnessed this very rare occasion. In the meantime, it was established the plane was only slightly damaged when one of its wings clipped a road sign during the emergency landing on Thursday. The damage did not influence the plane's ability to fly. Fuel starvation is at this stage believed to be the cause of the incident. The pilot had two passengers, both foreign nationals, onboard when on Thursday late afternoon he was returning to Swakopmund from a scenic flight. The aircraft's engine without warning stopped, prompting the pilot to steer the aircraft to the B2 coastal road and executing a gliding landing. No special treatment for Hai-//om San living in Swakopmund 78 Members of the Hai-//om San Traditional Authority residing in Swakopmund recently applied for residential plots in the coastal town. Town Council decided not to give the group special preferential treatment, but encouraged the members to participate in the housing registration exercise instead. In total there are about 300 Hai-//om San community members residing in Swakopmund. They are being represented by the Hai-//om San Traditional Authority. In February, the traditional authority sent a letter to the Swakopmund Town Council explaining the plight of its members. “Hai-//om San Community is the oldest indigenous com-munity in Namibia, which is still disadvantaged in some cases because of the social economic and educational status, and is also vulnerable (sic)”, the letter states. SAFLAND Rugby Sevens in Swakopmund The third edition of the country's Premier Rugby Sevens Tournament (the Safland Sevens) will be on played Friday and Saturday (10 and 11 November) in Swakopmund at the Swakopmund Football Club Stadium (SFC). The tournament, will once again see African sevens outfits in action, with national teams from Namibia, South Africa Select, Czech Republic, Lesotho, Tisan, Bulls, Namibia Academy and Botswana all making their presence felt. According to tournament organiser, Willem Strauss, the tournament provides a great platform for Namibia to compete at a global level. The event will also serve as preparation for the HSBC World Series starting in Dubai three weeks later. The Safland Sevens will also include a club and provincial competition for teams from Namibia and South Africa. According to Chief Executive Officer of the Namibia Rugby Union, Elizma Theron, there will be added benefits this year to the two-day rugby showpiece, and a sevens school tournament for four age groups will also run parallel to the tournament. Open Market in DRC standing unused The business community of the DRC informal settlement is increasingly unhappy with the Swakopmund Municipality which constructed an open market for business people in the area, but years have passed during which the facility is unoccupied. The open market, also known as Omatara, in DRC was built sometime in 2011. There are many people in DRC who sell their products from street corners, because the municipality has not given a go-ahead to use the open market. The open market is now surrounded by shacks, litter and human waste. During a visit to DRC, namib times spoke to various street vendors to establish if they are interested in using the open market, should Council decide to open it. EME Erongo Harambee Trust give workers real ownership Piquet Jacobs in horse mackerel fishery Walvis Bay horse mackerel operator, Erongo Marine Enterprises (EME), has launched its Erongo Harambee Trust recently whereby shares had been issued to its employees. The launch of the trust took place on Saturday evening with Vice-President Nickey Iyambo and the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Bernhard Esau witnessing this milestone moment for empowerment in the fishing sector. The beneficiaries of the Trust includes the 160 employees of EME who are not in management positions. Annual dividends to these shareholers are projected at around N$30 000 annually. Vice President Iyambo, who officiated at the launch, applauded the company for taking up the initiative which is aimed at empowering employees. He added the initiative not only falls in line with Namibia's Harambee Prosperity Plan, but it is also a trailblazer in move to the proposed New Equitable Economic Empowerment Framework (NEEEF). The aim of the NEEEF is to provide a clear, overarching policy framework into which all other policies will slot. The NEEEF will supersede all other transformation and empowerment policies of Government as well as provide the framework within which all private sector initiatives, past and future will be expected to conform to. Also speaking at the event, the managing director of Erongo Marine Enterprises, Martha Uumati, that the initiative is not only to benefit the employees through shared resources, but part of their corporate social responsibility.

Municipality of Walvis Bay's Multi-Media Training Programme (endorsed by TIKA) With the aim of up-skilling unemployed youth at the coast, the Municipality of Walvis Bay has completed the first instalment of the Multi-Media training programme for youth trainers. Speaking at the graduation ceremony on Tuesday, Alderman Immanuel Wilfried, Mayor of Walvis Bay commended the young graduates for their hard work and encouraged them to use the skills acquired to not only make a difference but to start up their own businesses to add value to their communities. At the same event, Mr Abdul Kadir Abukan (Country Coordinator of the TIKA Windhoek Programme) said to date; TIKA Windhoek has implemented 70 projects amounting to N$20 million in the education and agriculture sector. â€œThis training programme was one of our few projects of its kind, but we are very happy with its success. It encouraged us to develop similar projects. I am sure that my young friends who will receive their certificates today will use what they have learned and be successful in their livesâ€?. The initiative was prompted after the Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey, Deniz Cakar handed over high-tech media equipment worth N$420 000 to the Municipality of Walvis Bay on behalf of the Turkish International Cooperation Coordinating Agency (TIKA) in October 2015. The programme aims to equip young people based at the coast with skills in handling multi-media equipment such as videography, pre and post film production, graphic design and photography. Ideally, they should then be empowered to start their own businesses. Furthermore, the idea is to encourage home-grown talent to showcase skills that highlight Walvis Bay's beauty and contrasting landscapes which have attracted a wide range of film makers and investors. The next instalment of trainers will be communicated in the media in due course. The Municipality's selection criteria will consider disadvantaged youth with a passion for multi-media. Applicants are usually encouraged to submit persuasive motivations and will be selected by a panel of communication practitioners. Helena Ipinge has been elected as the new Junior Mayor of Walvis Bay and Chloe Rickerts as the Deputy Junior Mayor. The inauguration of the new Junior Town Council and the appointment of office bearers for 2018 took at the Municipality council chambers in Walvis Bay. Walvis Bay plays host to the biggest seismic survey vessel on the planet Floris Steenkamp

Walvis Bay was honoured twice now by the call at the port of Walvis Bay of the largest seismic survey vessel on the planet. The ship, Ramform Atlas, this week again spent a few days alongside to bunker up her supplies and a crew change. Upon invitation namib times paid an onboard visit recently to Ramform Atlas along-side at berth number eight. The Master of the vessel, Captain Anders Hansson, received the author of the article aboard. From the outset when you lay your eyes upon the ship you would know she is different from any other seismic survey vessel. Apart from being the largest, she is different in that she does not have the conventional shape of a seagoing vessel, in

other words a forward section, mid-ship and aft section. Ramform Atlas is built in a triangular shape. The ship-experts refer to a delta-shape ship design and the reporter, a laymen in ship design, prefers to refer to a triangular design. See picture A on this page. To explain the reason for this very special shape or design, it is necessary to understand first what is seismic surveying and what instruments and tools are needed to get the job done.

Captain Anders Hansson and selected members of the crew in the guided tour provided the most fascinating look into the world of seismic surveying and how it is done aboard the ship. To grasp the concept of why mankind needs seismic surveying on the world's oceans, let us take our lesson from a bread, freshly baked from the oven. To determine whether the bread is baked thoroughly, the baker would tap his or her index finger against the bread and with a tilted head listen to the sound wave produced by the tapping. A thoroughly baked bread makes a â€œhollowâ€? sound and a half-baked bread produces a thumb-like noise that begs for more oven heat. In seismic surveying, huge tubes called arrays are populated with air guns, which are used to generate acoustic pressure waves. These air guns are towed behind the vessel at a certain depth below the sea surface. Simultaneously, long streamers containing instruments to record the acoustic pressure wave generated by the air guns are also towed behind the vessel. The air guns are triggered to release the compressed air. The sound waves produced by this powerful decompressing of the air guns travels through the water into the seabed. As the sound wave travels through the subterranean structures of the seabed, the special acoustic instruments in the stringers picks up different sound wave lengths and signals it to a hitech control room onboard. Much like the sound wave generated by tapping an index finger against the bread, the acoustics picked up from the sound waves are transformed into a structure of the sub surface geology, which geologist and geophysicists use to interpret and try to find patterns where hydrocarbons might have accumulated This data accumulated by seismic survey activities, as is undertaken by Ramform Atlas is the lifeline for the global oiland gas industry. When seismic survey data looks promising it attracts investors who undertakes oil- and gas exploration activities based on this data. Once economically viable oil or gas deposits are found, oil- and gas extraction companies are ready to invest into resources to extracting these fossil fuel resources and

thereby keep the planets industries going. Apart from being a scientific marvel when it comes to seismic surveying, Ramform Atlas is also a home away from home for its crew of some eighty people. She boasts the world's only basketball court at sea, complete with a state-of-the art gymnasium, sauna and computer games room for the crew to relax, stay fit and socialise. The crew is multi-national, but aboard Ramform Atlas everyone is one big family. The crew works as one team and love to engage in recreational activities that promote team work and a sense of oneness. An open deck swimming pool, cafeteria that serves from snacks to five star meals, a gig area complete with a drum set, electric guitars and other music instruments make one easily forget you are on the planets biggest seismic research vessel and not a passenger ship. But as you would appreciate: this is after all a working, ocean-going vessel where danger lurks around every corner. Safety always comes first. In fact, Ramform Atlas' delta-shape design primarily has safety in mind. Conventional seismic survey ships have narrow aft sections into which seismic survey equipment and tools are crammed into small, dangerous work areas. However, with her wide aft section from which all equipment are spread and deployed from a larger operational area, work is safer and easier for everyone aboard Ramform Atlas. Just to set you at ease for the unthinkable â€“ there is a fully equipped medical facility aboard Ramform Atlas with a medical doctor on fulltime deployment. The facility can treat the occasional crew member that falls ill and can stabilise and prepare an injured person for air evacuation. For the time being it is still a closely guarded secret where Ramform Atlas is conducting seismic surveying. The fact that the ship is calling at Walvis Bay since earlier this year only tells you the survey cruises are targeting potential oil- and gas resources off the west coast of Southern Africa. The oil- and gas industry is very competitive. Information and data is precious and silence is golden.

Kavetu FC from Arandis, in conjunction with Arandis and Henties Bay Councillor's offices, arranged exhibition soccer games in Henties Bay at the Omdel Soccer Stadium. The teams that were invited to play against the newly established women's soccer team (Kavetu FC from Henties Bay) were Dream Team for Swakopmund and Kavetu FC of Arandis. Prof K. Muvangua managed both Kavetu FC of Arandis and the newly established Kavetu FC from Henties Bay. The first match between Kavetu FC, Arandis scored a total of three goals during the first half and added five more in the second half, to beat Kavetu FC of Henties Bay 8-0. In the second game of the day, Kavetu FC Arandis lost 1-3 to Dream Team and the third game saw Dream Team beat Kavetu FC of Henties Bay 3-0. The Swakopmund Women Soccer League's transfer period officially started on 1 November and goes until 2 February 2018. Teams are encouraged to buy, sell or loan players according to the league's rules and regulations. The Chairperson of Swakopmund Women Soccer League, Wilson Nguvauva, said that fair play will be applied to all player transfers. Soccer fans at Henties Bay showed their support and attended the event in big numbers. The NFA Women's Department is organizing the NFA Women Super Cup. The dates for the tournament are 25/26 November and 2/3 December. Each team can register 20 girls and 5 officials. The registration fee is N$ 1000-00. More details regarding the Super Cup will be communicated to all within the next few weeks. The 32nd FNB Annual Inter Branch SAGES Tournament came to a close at Rossmund GC on Friday evening with a Gala Dinner and Prize-giving. With fantastic weather conditions throughout the week and the superb condition of the golf course, the golfers

could not have asked for more – some excellent scores exceeding 40 points were carded during the week from some of the

80+ players each day, whilst one of the highlights came from Windhoek golfer Bertie Damon who produced Rossmund's first “Hole in One” for 2017 on Number 7. In the team competition everything was down to the last day of play with three teams featuring in the mix, going into Friday - “Try Hards” from Walvis Bay had their noses in front with 8 points from Windhoek's “Go for Gold” and the Coastal “Kestrels” however their best golf deserted them on Friday to give “Kestrels” a win with 3 points. Team Winners: Kestrels 441pts; Trie Hards 338pts; Go for Gold 335pts. Overall Individual winners were “A” Div: Simon Kgwadi (PTA); “B” Div: Rina Knight (RGC); “C” Div: Oswald Roos (RGC). The Vice President of SAGES SA, Alec Dixon thanked the Rossmund Golf Course for the use of the course; the Coastal SAGES Committee for a well organised tournament; the Golfers for all their efforts; friendship and camaraderie. National Darts trail at Walvis Bay A total of sixty darts players from six of the fourteen regions in the country turned up for the National Darts trail that is under way at the Narraville Primary School Hall in Walvis Bay. The trails are hosted by the Namibian Darts Federation to select the best players to represent Namibia at the Zone Six Championships in Botswana at the end of August 2018.

Mr Paul Fisher welcomed all the players and the management of the federation to the harbour town of Namibia and said in the opening remark that “if the eye sees that the hand precisely does what the brain thinks then we can be all winners”. The teams that will be selected are men's and women's veterans with two players in each team and their manager; the senior men's team with six players and one manager; a senior women's team with four players and one manager; the youth team with two men and two women players each. The Secretary General of the Federation Mr Naobeb is not happy with the fact that there are no youth and junior players at the trials and then mentioned that the Federation will have the trails for the youth and juniors next year. The Chairman of the Khomas Region said that the Federation is not doing enough for the youth dart players in the country. He also felt that darts should be one of the sports code at the NSSU. The President of the Federation Mr Ralph Ludwig said that national players will not contribute any money for the championships in Botswana as they (the players) need to concentrate on the games. We as the management do not want the National players to stress about the finances for the championships

in Botswana. He further said that dart players need to step up and make the deference, in showing the Namibian nation and the world that you can play darts without drinking any alcohol during the games. Only the best and disciplined players will be selected. Mr Ludwig also said that after the tournament the Federation will donate four dart boards to Narraville Primary school. Tomorrow will be an open dart tournament and everyone is welcome to enter. The registration fee will be N$100. Coastal Pirates Inline Hockey team excels at NIIHA Finals - again Erwin Leuschner

The Swakopmund-based Inline Hockey Club Coastal Pirates managed to scoop gold medals in eight out of ten divisions at the recent NIIHA National Finals held in Otjiwarongo. ters, Ladies open and Men's open. The Coastal Pirates were clearly the superior club as the players scooped championship banners in all except for two divisions. The 8U division was won by Otjiwarongo-based club Scorpions, while the seniors division was won by the Kamikaze team from Windhoek. The Pirates received bronze medals in both. During the 2016 NIIHA National Finals the Coastal Pirates won seven of the ten divisions. This year marked the most division wins by a club.

The Coastal Pirates were the only Namibian club to have a team in every age division offered by NIIHA and in total had 14 teams attended the Championships.
