Clifford Strydom dies
One of Namibia’s leading aviation businessmen, Mr. Clifford Strydom, passed away in Swakopmund on 24 December last year after a long illness. The late Mr. Strydom is one of the founders of local aviation business Bay Air Aviation. A memorial service was held for Strydom at the Swakopmund aerodrome on 30 December 2016. Due to the holiday season and limited publication of newspapers over the festive period, news of Strydom’s death did not reach all quarters of the coastal community where he was well known and well respected. Staff of Bay Air Aviation and a former business partner of the late Strydom, Mr. Frank Stein, honoured his memory with the following words: “To most people the sky is the limit. To those who love aviation, the sky is home”.

In the meantime the West Coast Safety Initiative (WCSI) counted far less vehicles travelling towards Swakopmund on certain particular days at the road block outside town on the B2 highway compared to previous years. The most cars travelling towards the coast were recorded on 23 December 2016: 493 vehicles were counted per hour heading to the coast. This is significantly less compared to 2015 when 1468 were counted on the same day – almost three times as many. This significant decrease in traffic volumes most likely also contributed to less accidents being recorded for the 2016/2017 season compared to 2015/2016. According to the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVA) accidents in the Erongo region have reduced by 12%. Countrywide 398 accidents were recorded. There were a total of 741 injuries and 65 fatalities on Namibian roads this past season. Over 130 people nabbed with drugs (see related article on page 3) The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) have arrested 135 people on drug trafficking related charges during the festive season. NamPol Commissioner and Head of Criminal Investigations, General Maritz du Toit told Nampa via email on Wednesday the arrests were made between 01 November and 28 December 2016. The drugs include Cannabis, Mandrax, Cocaine, Crack, and Heroin. Du Toit noted
that the confiscated drugs are worth N$6 313 913 Those arrested, he said, include 120 Namibians, six Angolans, five Tanzanians, two South Africans, one Congolese and one Sudanese. “Most of the arrests

So some of the businesses in Swakopmund won and some of them did not do so well, so it is not all who gloomed, I belief” said Ndjambula during an inter-view with namib times yesterday about the performance of businesses in Swakopmund over the festive season and 2016 financial year. Ndjambula however said the main businesses who benefited from this past festive season were the hotels, restaurants and the retails e.g. supermarkets. “ Adding to that apart from the economic situation I know there was lesser business performance in the CBD because of the new shopping mall (Platz am Meer), but if you look at the plan of Swakopmund in general there is no more place at the south of Swakopmund because the town end at Alte Brucke Hotel so the CBD is moving towards the northern direction and that mall (Platz am Meer) came at the right place and on the right time , nice location and at a time of the festive season. But I think if that mall opened at a different time maybe some local businesses could have done worse, because now they had a compliment of 30 000 people coming to Swakopmund over the festive season” he said. Ndjambula believes that the number of visitors this year have increased and he says every year the number of visitors to a town always increase and the only difference now is that visitors had to cut on their budget and that has implications on especially big hotels whereby people might prefer to book
guesthouses instead of five star hotels. He further said that he believes street vendors might have been causalties and according to him he spoke to a few vendors and 90% of them didn't do well because they are on the end of the visitors budgets. Even if visitors bought their products they always end up negotiating for a price which means they still sell but the profit margin is lower. “I also spoke to a number of hotels and they did very well and some of the hotels adjusted the prices for locals so that they don't lose out” he adds. The current financial year might also proof to be a bit challenging especially for businesses or SME's who are depending on the government, because we all know that we had to revise the budget and cut down on spending and “I do not think it will just go away overnight and business people need to understand that we are living in a global village. It is a new year and we need to be positive and realistic so people have to change their way of doing business, give more value for money. If you have a restaurant make sure that your customer service are polished so that customers can keep on coming back” he said. He also said business owners need to look at cutting unnecessary costs for their businesses and only when those mechanisms are put in place will they be able to take it to the next season without you losing too much. “Business owners also need to be innovative and listening to clients, because customer service is one of the things we need to improve in this country and I think we have the potential of having a good year this year and we all need to work together” he concluded.

Big drug bust in Walvis Bay: The Drug Law Enforcement Sub-Division together with the Tutaleni criminal Investigation Unit managed a break-through in the drug trade in Walvis Bay recently. According to Detective Chief Inspector Erastus Iikuyu two suspects were arrested after being in possession of cannabis valued at N$32 750. during a search of the house. The two suspects, Thomas Likius (26) and Elizabeth Kanandjebo (23) were arrested. They have been charged with dealing in cannabis.

Erongo NamPol: 2017 so far “blessed” The year 2017 has so far in the Erongo Region been close to crimefree with no serious incidents being reported. “This year we are blessed,” said Detective Chief Inspector Erastus Iikuyu, regional crime investigations co-ordinator for Nampol, to namib times. No murder, rape or similar crime has been reported. The police has in the meantime successfully arrested two suspects, who were allegedly involved in a housebreaking case in Swakopmund recently. According to Iikuyu the two suspects allegedly broke into a house in the Swakopmund suburb Ocean View between 26 and 29

Mathias Gariseb (35) appeared on charges of inconsiderate driving, failure to comply with instruction/direction of a peace officer and driving with an excessive breath alcohol level. Julius pleads guilty in fraud bail hearing The Namibian transport business owner accused of defrauding the Ministry of Finance (MoF) of billions of Namibian dollars along with two Chinese men, on Friday denied the allegations in court. Laurentius Julius told the Windhoek Magistrate's Court during his bail hearing that underpayments of customs duties were reported to the MoF, which indicates his willingness to co-operate with the law. He is the third accused in the matter. The first accused is 46-year-old Tao Huizhong and the second accused is Jinrong Huang, 31. Julius is the owner of Extreme Customs Clearing Services (XCCS) based in Walvis Bay, which deals with the clearance of imported and exported goods. He told Magistrate Venatius Alweendo that he was employed in the Customs and Excise Department of the MoF for nine years, before he ventured into his own business. Julius indicated that his company services an estimated 40 Chinese associated companies. He also denied acquiring, using and possessing property that could have been a procedure of criminal activities. During cross-examination by Prosecutor Rowan van Wyk, Julius said that after it was established that invoices issued by his company were different from those in the Customs' files, he wrote a letter to the MoF requesting it to review payments by his company from 2013 to 2015. Roi Arthur Waligora, a director and forensic accountant at KPMG from South Africa, was appointed by the Bank of Namibia to review documents relating to imports processed in Walvis Bay by XCCS. Waligora told the court that about N$ 3.5 billion was remitted offshore through Nedbank. “We found that there were discrepancies on the documentation, which made us question what was in fact imported and what the actual value was,” Waligora told the court. He said Julius, Tao and Jinrong are among 30 suspects implicated on the same charges. Julius first indicated he is able to pay N$ 500 000 bail, however, the State objected to that amount as being too low, to which Julius offered to pay N$ 2 million. Tao said he is able to pay N$ 100 000 and Jinrong said he can post bail of N$ 50 000. MVA starts Opotuli road safety campaign The Motor-Vehicle Accident Fund (MVA) on Friday launched the 'Opotuli' road safety campaign for travellers returning to their respective destinations. Opotuli means “We are here” in Oshiwambo. It aims to make sure road users abide by the rules. The campaign's partners include the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) and the Private Sector Road Safety Forum. MVA Acting Chief Corporate Affairs, Sidney Boois told Nampa on Friday there will be an increase of traffic on the main routes as most business operations commence on Monday and most schools open on Wednesday. “The check point is there to check whether drivers and vehicles are in compliance with the road (traffic) system,” he said, referring to the Windhoek-Okahandja and Windhoek-Rehoboth police roadblocks. Boois explained that road users are aware of the laws, however their attitude and behaviour prove different. Chief Executive Officer of the Private Sector Road Safety Forum, Horst Heimstadt explained the campaign is a good initiative but he is not sure drivers realise the dangers of accidents when going on the road. “They claim to forget to check their vehicles, which should be done to prevent road accidents, but they do not forget to fill their petrol tanks,” Heimstadt said. Conditions of tires, windshields, lights and wiper blades are some of the things drivers should check before using the vehicle.
The Fund also handed out two baby-safety car seats to Fritz Reynecke and Loide Ayihengo, who were both stopped at the Windhoek-Okahandja roadblock for a routine check. Reynecke, who was driving from Swakopmund to Windhoek, said he was happy with the gift. He said the road is full of vehicles and most are abiding to the rules. “I am glad because I had a bigger car seat which does not fit into the car, so I am happy I received a smaller one,” said Ayihengo, who was driving from Rundu to Rosh Pinah with her two-monthold baby. Vehicle dealer, M&Z Motors, handed over 10 child car seats to the MVA in Windhoek during November last year in an initiative to prevent the risk of critical injury or fatality of infants and toddlers not strapped into child car seats. Receivers of the car seats will be contacted after three months for an interview to be possible road safety ambassadors in their areas. Operation Opotuli activities will be conducted along the B1 and B2 routes. The first time she saw the container on her Erf was in February 2016 and then building rubble “I have recently noticed that they have added three skips next to the container and this made me very sad” said Mrs Manuel. The driver of a Toyota FJ Cruiser was arrested on Sunday evening after he was involved in an accident on the C34 salt road leading to Henties Bay from Swakopmund. According to Swakopmund Senior
Traffic Official Trudi Xoagub the driver tested positive during a breathalyser test. The reading was 0.94 milligrams per 1000 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 0.37. According to the West Coast Safety Ini-
tiative no injuries were sustained. The exact cause of the accident is not yet known. It is alleged that the driver lost control over the vehicle whereafter it overturned.

More than N$1 million in fines issued for Erongo during festive season The Namibian Police registered a total of 1 035 criminal offences in the Erongo Region in the period 1 December 2016 to date, for which fines were issued to the approximate value of N$1 065 829-00, according to the Regional Commander of the Namibian Police in the region, Commissioner Andreas Nelumbu. Another year of agony for pets as fireworks set off on New Year Dogs in a panicked state were brought to the SPCA Swakopmund animal shelter on 1 January after they ran away from home as fireworks were set off across town on New Years. In total seven dogs were brought to the SPCA or were left in the “Klappe”. That is more animals than the year before. All animals were luckily claimed on the same day and united with their owners. Resident saves Botswana resident from drowning Two residents from Botswana landed in trouble when they were swimming in the ocean in the vicinity of Mile 4 on 3 January late in the afternoon. According to reports a local resident heard their cries for help from his apartment not far from the scene. Reiter Verein Swakopmund th hosts successfull 60 tournament

The ReiterVerein Swakopmund (RVS) once again hosted a successful equestrian tournament at the start of the new year. Lots of spectators gathered at the riding stables to witness riders and horses perform in the various disciplines. The tournament ended on Sunday with the final six-bar competition – a highlight which was reintroduced once again. The winner was Svenja Späth on Metzger Drilling Bodenhausen Zambezi who almost made the 1.80 metres high jump. Over the course of the tournament one rider stood out especially winning various trophies: Nadine Flemming. Read the full report soon in namib times.
