An aged, blind Yorkshire terrier which went missing in the desert east of the Swakop River smallholdings recently was found by mere chance.

The only other S.P.C.A. in Namibia regisered as a welfare organisation with the relevant Ministry is the Swakopmund kennel: The “Tierschutzverein Swakopmund (S.P.C.A.)” received its Welfare Number 438. The NSPCA wishes to unify all smaller S.P.C.A. kennels in Namibia. These organisations will all benefit from the experience, knowledge and the network of the NSPCA. Currently, the S.P.C.A. in Windhoek, Walvis Bay, Oshana, Lüderitz, Keemanshoop, Otjiwarongo, Grootfontein
Avid drone flyer Bernt Bruns was contacted to see if he could locate the missing dog using his drone and the plan worked. He located the dehydrated dog spotting it from the air and this could very well be Namibia's first aerial rescue by drone. Bruns is known in the coastal region for his aerial drone flying skills and aerial photography. After hearing that a small dog went missing in the desert, he decided to attempt the impossible and search for the animal by drone. “I visited the owner and she pointed me in the direction they though the dog walked off”, Bruns said to namib times. The dog, 15-year-old Sonnet, is a small Yorkshire terrier weighing a mere 2.4 kilogram. She is blind and on top of that has diabetes which made her chance of surviving in the desert almost impossible. She went missing on the afternoon of 1 January 2018 from one of the smallholdings. “The wind was blowing strong that afternoon, and I think she must have lost her orientation entirely”, explained the owner Maureen van Rensburg. After an unsuccessful search for the dog by the owner which lasted late into the night, Bruns stepped in on the morning of the next day. “I was very skeptic. Especially since the dog's color blends in with the colour of the desert and rocks. I nonetheless decided to give it a try”, Bruns explained. He launched his DJI Inspire 2 drone and flew into a Northeastern direction. “Spotting a small dog on the small screen at that stage seemed the impossible.” After flying for quite some time, he heard a faint bark, which must have been picked up

Swakopmund S.P.C.A. won't join the new National S.P.C.A. Erwin Leuschner
The Swakopmund Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (S.P.C.A.) will not join the newly established “National S.P.C.A.” based in Windhoek. Instead it will remain independent and continue operating as it has in the past. Since the announcement of the founding of the national S.P.C.A. in November last year, there was confusion over the future position of the Tierschutzverein Swakopmund. namib times spoke to the Chairperson Peter Witt who explained the situation. The S.P.C.A. in Windhoek founded the National S.P.C.A. Namibia (NSPCA) which is based in Windhoek. This process was “easy” as the S.P.C.A. in Windhoek had been registered as an animal welfare organisation decades ago: “National SPCA - W.O. Nr. 6“. It was one of the first Welfare No.'s assigned to

Henties Bay: body of ten-year drowning victim recovered

The body of ten-year old Lee-Wayne Delwin Nanubeb, who drowned on Wednesday at Henties Bay, washed ashore about twelve kilometers north of the town on Saturday. The deceased's mortal remains have been identified by his mother and the body was transported to the police mortuary for a post-mortem examination. The drowning incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon. While on person drowned two more were hospitalised after they were swept away by a strong sea current. According to Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, five boys, aged between six and ten years old, went swimming in the ocean that same morning. At about 14:00, as the high tide was coming in, the minors were swept away by a strong rip-current and they were unable to swim safely back to shore. “One young man strolling on the beach saw the dilemma and went in, but he could only manage to rescue four boys”, Iikuyu said. The fifth boy drowned. His body washed out three days later. According to Lifelink Emergency Rescue Services the youngest of the lot, the 6-year old, was unresponsive, did not breathe and there was no heartbeat. The experienced paramedics made a successful resuscitation attempt and the child started breathing again. “He was transported to the clinic where the very dedicated nursing staff took over and the child has shown significant recovery”, Lifelink announced. The child was later transferred to Swakopmund for specialist care. The second child was responsive, but was also hospitalised due to fear of secondary drowning. The other minors were treated for shock.

I stopped to let my doggies out of the car for a quick stretch, when I suddenly heard a bark again”, he said. As he drove over the next hill he found “Sonnet” walking and then collapsing – completely dehydrated and almost dead. “She was super exhausted and could not even pull her curled up tongue into her mouth. This blind doggie managed to walk about one kilometer away from the plot house, in a super rocky area”, Bruns explained. When Sonnet was reunited with her owner, van Rensburg burst into tears. “It was the biggest moment in my life”, she says. Since then, the Swakopmund kennel has established its own organization, has its own constitution and is accountable for its own annual financial results. “We are small, but have a very efficient work set-up. We have the financial back-up from council and we have a strong support base from the residents of Swakopmund for which we are very grateful”, Witt further said. The Swakopmund S.P.C.A. therefore remains independent, but will continue to support other S.P.C.A. branches when the need arises. It has been done this way in the past. The Swakopmund S.P.C.A. has assisted the kennels at Walvis Bay and Henties Bay at several occasions and will continue to do so. “Currently, here are two independent S.P.C.A. units in Namibia: Windhoek as the National S.P.C.A. and the Tierschutzverein Swakopmund (S.P.C.A.). We are, like all S.P.C.A.'s around the world, independent of one another. Every S.P.C.A. has to adhere to unique government policies, financial reports, committee and organisational goals”, Witt explained. He added the ultimate aim of every kennel is the welfare of animals. That must always be priority number one. The S.P.C.A. in Swakopmund intends to expand and add more kennels soon, to keep up with the growing demand for kennel-space. “Our mutual mission is: the rehabilitation and finding homes for neglected and unwanted animals. We provide safe interim homes for these animals, feed them and have them medically treated if necessary. We also strive to find the owners of stray pets. We will continue and render our assistance where required”, Witt concluded.

Exactly 100 years after the highest peak of the Brandberg mountain, the Königstein, was reached by the first European explorers on 2 January 1918, a similar expedition reached the peak of the mountain to celebrate this unique anniversary. The peak of the Brandberg mountain was first reached and documented by three Europeans: Professor Ernst August Gries, the headmaster of the Realgymnasium (high school) in Windhoek, Reinhard Maack, a German explorer, geologist and geographer, and Georg Schulze, a former lieutenant in the Schutztruppe. In the early hours of 31 December 1917,
the three commenced the ascent to the top. Carrying barely enough water coupled with scorching summer temperatures the three explorers made their way up the Tsiseb gauge. It took three days. Late during the day on 2 January 1918, the pioneers finally reached the peak located at 2,573 meters above sea level: the Königstein. After Maack collected various measurements with specialised equipment they carried with

them, the three men started the descend early the next day. On 4 January 1918 almost at the foot of the mountain down the Tsiseb gauge, Maack discovered rock paintings drawn on an overhanging rock. He later described it as “the most beautiful he ever encountered.” Maack had in fact discovered the “White Lady”, the most famous Namibian rock painting and world-renowned tourist attraction. To celebrate the 100-
year anniversary of this historical ascent a commemorative expedition was undertaken by three German nationals in recent days. To the day approximately a century later on 2 January 2018 they reached Königstein. The expedition was prepared and conducted by Dr elge Kleifeld, a historian, geographer and political scientist. He was accompanied by the archeologist Martina Trognitz and pilot Lukas Gehrig.

Two horses with a combined value of more than N$300 000, belonging to wellknown horse breeders Klaus and Corinna Spaeth, were recovered on Friday after they were stolen from the farm Davetsaub in Otjimbingwe area on 31 December 2017. Two suspects were arrested. “We are grateful that we got the horses back, but now they must recover from the ordeal. They clearly were mistreated”, said Corinna Spaeth to namib times yesterday. For 35 years they have been breeding horses at the Davetsaub stud, having bred performing sport horses for show jumping, dressage and events. According to Corinna Spaeth, the horses were first assumed to be missing at the end of last year. One horse is the fouryear old female black warm blooded horse “Miss Universe”. The animal was bred at the stud and showed promising prospects. The breaking in was supposed to happen soon. The other horse is two-year old foal, a normal male brown horse. According to Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, the two horses were recovered by police members of the Anti-Stock Theft SubDivision at the resettlement farm Oshiwa
Unit D. The farm is located about 50 kilometers from Davetsaub in the Otjimbingwe area. When the horses were recovered both had already been marked by a new brand. “Miss Universe” was branded on her cheek, the other horse has a brand on her back. “One could clearly see that both horses were ridden bareback for a long distance and that they had been tied with a wire. They have cuts and bruises”, Spaeth continued. Apparently both horses were already sold for little more than N$2 000. Two suspects, Dausab Roberts (21) and Steven Goaseb (25), were found in possession of the stolen animals. They were arrested on Friday and made their first appearance at the Karibib magistrates court yesterday on charges of stock theft. The matter was postponed to 5 February for further police investigations. Bail was denied to the accused. Both accused therefore remain in custody until their next court appearance.

Bank Windhoek Festive Cup on the committee so each member will take a time slot and you can decide on who you would like to challenge. The format will be stable ford and each four ball will constitute three games meaning that the committee member will play each of the players in that four balls so there will be a max total of 33 games which will determine the winner committee or club, but I think the club will get there but well and truly kicked. We plan to have this event as the opening event of the New Year so there will be a trophy. The R & A have appointed Morne as the captain of the club team and Herman will obviously lead the committee team. The club team are requested to play in blue [any shade] while the committee will play in red. It was proffered that Darryl the only non-playing committee member take on Impi, frank and Pieter in a round of golf, but that will be un-official and will not count to the team results, although we should win that one hands down. All I can say is BRING IT ON WE ARE WAITING.

From the committee we wish all members, friends of the club and visitors a wonderful 2018 and our theme for the year is PLAY MORE GOLF I think it is only fitting to start the first report of the New Year by boasting the success of our BANK WINDHOEK FESTIVE CUP played on 29th and 30 December it was indeed a great event and well organised by Jason and Darryl with prize money well in excess of 50 000. We can only acknowledge our main sponsor BANK WINDHOEK, and thanks to Jaans and his team for their ongoing support. There were also many other sponsors who came to the party and our sincere appreciation also to them for their generous input. Added to the sponsors out thanks also go to Schalk and his green keeping staff, Gert and the bar ladies and cleaners, JJ and the Merry band of braaiers and the ladies in the kitchen and last but no means least Jerry for the scoring. It really makes me proud to see such a team effort by our club, but let be said not for the first time. The winners over the two days were the young
and old combination of Chris Bothma and Willie Els with a very good 95 points, although there were five teams on 94 points who chased hard to the end. There were 20 prizes and closest to the pins on three holes each day. Sadly there was also a longest drive on the Saturday. Added to these prizes there were also 6 lucky draws and a small auction which was 'won' by Rocco. We had a few visitors from all over the country and obviously Chester Williams was the star of the visitors list and it was indeed special having him at the club for the event, unfortunately he and his partner, Mark Barnard, were unable to make the cut for the prizes, maybe next year. At the prize giving Jaans did commit to the event for this year so really something to look forward to. The draw for N$1 600 was eventually won last week by Emile junior so it is back to N$1 000 this week Friday at 18:00. The first big event is 13 January when the committee will take on the club. Johan Nel Johan Nel is aangewys as die Weste Resiesduif Klub se nuwe klub kampioen vir 2017 met n punte tal van 751. Die manne het mekaar behoorlik die stryd aangese gedurende die 2017 vlugprogram en tot op die einde was die spanning nog hoog. Johan het egter sy huiswerk gedoen en gesorg dat hy die beste vir laaste hou en sodoende die manne gewys dat hy kan duiwe afrig ! . Bakkies Theron het 2de plek behaal met 721 punte en verlede jaar se wenner Poortershaven moes die knie buig en met die 3de plek op 700 punte tevrede wees ! Wedvlugte is hierdie jaar aangebied vanaf Kalkfeld 250 km tot Rundu 750 km. Daar is ook begin om te eksperimenteer met loslatingspunte vanaf Opuwa en Kamanjab wat n groot sukses was. Die volledige wenners in hul onderskeie afdelings as volg: Johan Nel Klub kampioen , middel distansie kampioen en Ope afdeling kampioen. Bakkies Theron Jaaroud afdeling kampioen duif met die hoogste spoed en rooi duif kampioen. Poortershaven kortpad afdeling kampioen en duif met die meeste punte. Bruno Scheider langpad afdeling kampioen en wenner van die Opuwa prestige wedvlug. En Amos Boonzaaier. Tydends hierdie geleentheid is daar ook Namibiese meriete ere kleure oorhandig deur die voorsitter van die Namibiese Resiesduif Beheerraad nl. Sakkie van Heerden aan Johan Nel en Bakkies Theron vir hulle prestasies en toewyding aan die duiwesport. Die klub bestaan tans uit 8 lede wat aangevoer word deur die voorsitter Alwie Oberholster. Die manne het reeds duiwe geteel vir volgende jaar met baie Ăngevoerde 'verassings'.Daar heers tans n baie goeie gees en gesindheid onder die lede en alhoewel die klub maar n klein ledetal het word daar behoorlik duif gevlieg en word daar maar swaar verloor! Aan die publiek wil die klub ook graag net BAIE dankie se vir die aanmelding van duiwe wat verdwaal het tydens vlugte en aan hulle eienaars terugbesorg is. Alhoewel ons baie mooi na die duiwe kyk en sorg dat hulle in n gesonde en fiks kondisie ingekorf word vir n wedvlug ,kan die mis en valke nie voorspel (oorsaak van die meeste duiwe verliese tydens wedvlugte ) Enige navrae vir aansluiting of verlore duiwe kan die voorsitter Alwie gekontak word te 081 147 7885 of 081 153 1692.
