Ten helicopter pilots from Namibia took part in a specialist helicopter flight training course in Swakopmund this week. The course was presented by chief pilot Simon Jones from Los Angeles, California, a helicopter pilot specialising in the flight of Robinson helicopters. The course was organied by NAMAGRI Aviation Services, who is the leading distributor of Robinson helicopters in Namibia. The Robinson R44 is a four-seater light helicopter produced by the Robinson Helicopter Company. It remains the world's best-selling general aviation (GA) helicopter since 1999. Continues on Page 2

Taxpayers who are not in good standing at the Receiver of Revenue has been given a second chance to do so, thanks to an extended "amnesty", announced earlier this week. An amnesty period concluded on 31 July made provision for penalties on taxes in arrears to be written off entirely, but this new round is rather a tax in arrears recovery program whereby 70 % of penalties may be waivered. The tax payable will not be lowered and will be payable in full. The Ministry of Finance announced in a media release the last tax arrears recovery incentive programme will commence on 11 September 2017 and conclude on 11 March 2018. Thereafter tax payers not in good standing may not come off very well from a brush with the Receiver. The main objective of the programme is to offer a limited-time relief to Continues on Page 2

Walvis Bay mayor has message of hope amidst town’s economic Piquet Jacobs hardship During an ordinary council meeting Tuesday night, the Mayor of Walvis Bay, Clr Alderman Immanuel Wilfried had a message of hope to the local economy, which is currently severely pressed by the economic downturn which virtually spares no business, public institution or household. Job losses is the biggest headache. According to Wilfried a more positive picture is emerging. He referred to the Minister of Finance, Calle Schlettwein, who has cited some recovery in the agriculture and mining sectors, among others. The tourism sector has also seen strong growth. "There is reasonable optimism that economic activity and outlook for 2017 is better than a year ago. Even despite the sovereign downgrade of Namibia by the ratings agency Moody's. One of the strategies to stay afloat during times of adverse economic conditions is to cut spending.The local authority is not immune to these challenges. Therefore as local authority we are pressed to use resources a lot more prudently and effectively than ever before", he explained. The Mayor also acknowledged the suffering of many Namibians who after losing their jobs through retrenchments and closures often find it hard to obtain a new job or find other means to earn an income. "Their ability to stay above water could prove to be very tough," Wilfried admitted. On job losses in Walvis Bay the past year Clr. Wilfried said some of the factors are unique to Walvis Bay. As the town is relying on the fishing sector, reduced total allowable catches and reduced fish landings are some of the reasons why the fishing sector have to lay off people. At the same time the global economic downturn also result in other economic sectors in Walvis Bay seeing a downturn. Marine industrial engineering and ship repairs are examples where foreclosures occurred this year with resultant job losses. Continues on Page 2

As these helicopters can fly at low altitudes and maintain great speed it is suitable for game counts or other low-altitude, high speed aerial operations. Low altitude flying has one distinct disadvantage. In the event of a malfunction of the aircraft, there is little time for the pilot to react to avert an air accident. "When doing a game census or similar, the pilots have little time to react should any emergency occur", explained McDonald. Hence, the specialist training. "It is for this reason we are offer pilots flying the R44 this specialized training". According to McDonald pilots are drilled with procedures and appropriate actions in the event of emergencies. These include emergencies such as engine failure. Jones is highly skilled and experienced with more than 14 000 helicopter flying hours. According to McDonald the course contains very little theoretical work. Practical experience in different flight scenarios is paramount. Pilots accumulate a lot of practical knowledge through these exercises. The training was offered over a four-day period and concluded yesterday.

Swakopmund constituency councilor Juuso Kambueshe has condemned the brutal murder of elderly residents in August in his constituency, stating it has made him realise his shortcomings as leader. In an interview with namib times he not only took responsibility as leader in a most admirable way, Kambueshe also called on regional leaders, including himself, to find a solution to curb the rising crime wave. Although Kambueshe applauds the police force for a job well done on apprehending the suspects in all three cases, he wants to address the rising crime wave in order to protect people proactively, rather than the reactionary hunting for the criminal when it is already too late for the victim. "Both these incidents have made me realize my shortcomings as a leader". "Firstly, we need to conduct an in-depth analysis into what is causing these crimes. We need to look at our moral values and we need to be held accountable as leaders", he continued. Whilst Kambueshe concedes crime is a social evil and that it will always exist, he asks to what degree "we should allow it." "The brutality of these crimes concerns me. Instead of stealing only valuables and fleeing, the culprits murdered their elderly victims. The fact is that this issue will not resolve itself and will not go away. We must look at statistics, have strategic engagements and come up with proposals to address these issues", he demands. Kambueshe commended the police for apprehending the suspects in such short periods, despite very difficult circumstances and limited resources. "The police force performs a very good job. We must remember this fact when we, as leaders, look at our decisions. For instance: the police have nothing to do with shebeen license applications. However, once there are lots of shebeens they become the burden of the police". Kambueshe called upon the community for assistance and dialogue to find solutions. Kambueshe also commended the initiative by Swakopmund residents who are intending to stage a silent protest on 26 September at the Swakopmund magistrate court, to show their concern about the rising crime wave. The protest will coincide with the next court appearances of the suspects who have been charged with the murder of the Strzelecki couple in the beginning of August. "That is good, as it shows that our society is not happy with current the moral values," he said. Kambueshe vowed he as leader needs to do more. "Our responsibility to do more and find a solution has to be answered with a plan and not only a speech. We must show how we intend to resolve this," he said. Hartmann murder suspect also sustained a broken leg during arrest at Outjo - sources The main suspect in the murder of Manfred Hartmann, an elderly resident of Swakopmund on 18 August this year is still recovering in a Windhoek hospital from a gunshot wound from a policeman's firearm. He fled Swakopmund after the murder and was shot lees than twelve hours later resisting arrest at Outjo. Meanwhile, the Namibian Police issued a renewed request for the public to assist identifying family members or friends of the deceased Mr Hartmann. "We urge residents to come forward with information on how we can trace the family," said Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo. namib times understood the murder suspect, Uaaro Unaro Mbemukenga (25), was shot and injured in the leg resisting arrest after the Police intercepted him at Outjo. This was less than twelve hours after the body of 78year-old Hartmann was found in his home in Vineta. Initial reports indicate that Mbemukenga, who is yet to make his appearance in court on a charge of murder as well as robbery with aggravating circumstances, was employed by the victim as a gardener. After Hartmann's body was discovered by members of the police, Mbemukenga was nowhere to be found, leading to suspicion he might have something to do with the murder. Various valuables, including a laptop, a cellphone, a pistol and two bags of clothes amongst others were stolen from Hartmann's home. The stolen laptop was recovered in Swakopmund after the suspect allegedly sold it to get money to travel to the North. The police have also recovered all other stolen items, including the firearm. Reliable sources revealed Mbemukenga is not only recovering from the bullet wound, but also sustained a broken leg attempting to flee from the Police. He allegedly jumped over a wall at Outjo in his haste to flee police officers and broke a leg. He apparently needs surgery to his leg. Hartmann was one of three elderly Swakopmund residents murdered in a short period. The murders, and several other murders that preceded these killings in prior weeks, drew huge public reaction. It also spurred the Swakopmund local authority into action to see what can be done to curb the culture of killing that seems to be prevailing. Namibians in general are peace loving and tolerant, and the country's high murder rate must be stopped.

New business strives to establish a pool of Namibian literature Sharlien Tjambari

Everyone has a story to tell, only the great can pen it well. That is the slogan of a newly established business which makes it a priority for indigenous stories to be told and documented. Namibian libraries are hungry for books written by Namibians, for Namibia. Books written about places, events, the people, its animals, material things of interest, folklore and merely every other topic under the sun concerning Namibia. PNM & Authors is a business owned by Paulina Nanona Moses, a young lady from Swakopmund. The business was launched on 31 August, with the launch event taking place at the Cosdef Arts and Craft Centre. The launch event included motivational speakers to encourage the creation of Namibian literature, with specific emphasis on literature originating from the black communities. The business has been established for writing- and editing purposes - aiding both aspiring and established authors. It targets both non-fiction and fiction. "We also offer consultation services to those who need guidance in writing", explained Moses. Moses further said people have good stories to tell, but also brilliant ideas they want documented. Unfortunately, writing skills is a major limitation in the production of Namibian literature. "That should however, not limit people from having their good ideas scripted, printed and published". During the launch of her business, Moses said: "many of you have stories to tell, but how many of you have the skill to write? Writing requires a lot of time. How many of you have time to dedicate to writing? At PNM & Authors, not only do we have the time to write for you. We also have the gift of writing to offer". The business also revealed the subject matter and title of the first book to see the light from the PNM & Authors stable: "Strength of a Woman". The book documents the life of Mrs Natalia !Gaogoses who is a well-known public figure and a businesswoman. The vision of PNM & Authors is to ensure indigenous literature is scripted and documented for the purpose of national pride. PNM & Authors is a pool of skilled writers, who have years of experience in the media sector. At the launch event, a number of prominent locals were in attendance on the photo: (fltr) The former

Despite a global economic slowdown which also affects Namibia, the Namibia Ports Authority (Namport) still managed to grow its import and export volumes and the port of Walvis Bay remains the top port on the west coast of Africa. This was said last Thursday by the Governor of Erongo, Clr Cleophas Mutjavikua at the launch event of the 11th Erongo Business and Tourism Expo.Clr Mutjavikua applauded the port authority for remaining committed to adding value to its existing operations and applying innovation to overcome adverse market conditions. In this instance reference is made to Namport expecting to commission a new container terminal on reclaimed land (pictured above) in the port of Walvis Bay by 2018 to cope with container handling capacity which is set to more than double from the existing 350 000 TEU per annum as well as a new deepwater port planned at LĂźderitz to serve Southern Namibia and northern parts of South Africa.

The Swakopmund Municipality last Thursday signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with the town councils of Opuwo, Oranjemund and Rehoboth. These town councils will in future share knowledge, information and experience in the fields of tourism, environmental and health management, town planning, waste management and community development strategies. Much like twinning agreements between Namibian towns [and capital city] with cities and towns overseas. The MoU's were signed after the recent Swakopmund town council meeting where representatives of the various local authorities were pre-

sent. "Your choice to identify Swakopmund as a twinning partner shows that as a local authority we have something to offer to Namibia," said Deputy Mayor Maria Elago during the meeting on behalf of the mayor Paulina Nashilundo who could unfortunately not attend. Clr Elago added smaller local authorities in Namibia in the past have relied on Swakopmund for advice and technical assistance on service delivery, administration and governance. Franja se debut album “My Verhaal “ is op 24 Junie 2016 vrygestel, met 16 oorspronklike liedjies, uit haar eie pen. “My Verhaal” het na slegs 4 maande Goue Status bereik met verkope oor die 15 000 eenhede. Franja se eerste enkelsnit “Stad van verlange” pryk op talle radio speellyste en haar musiek video het reeds oor die 400 000 “kyke”.

Be The Change Has anybody wondered why our country is in the top 20 of Top Car Accident Death Countries? Because the people drive insanely reckless. For some reason there are those that think they own the streets and they could do as they please, then there are those that drive beautiful, expensive cars and think everyone must go out of the way when they approach as if they are royalty. Money, power whatever it may be, none of it makes you better than anybody else on this earth. We all have a beating heart inside of us and we bleed the same colour blood. Stop being selfish and stop thinking that the world revolves around you or that the world may owe you something. Another matter: the lives of animals! Not all you may care so much about the lives of innocent animals, but some of us do. And it breaks our hearts to see that your reckless driving/actions causes the death of beautiful creatures. Don't tell me there is nothing you can do to prevent the hit if a dog runs into the street. Dogs are very impulsive and unpredictable, we all know that by now. But there are steps that could be taken! First of all, when you see a dog on the side of the road, you slow down and put your hazards on, so if the time comes where you have to break suddenly to save the dog's life, no accident has to be caused. This is a simple procedure that all of us can follow. Think about it this way, put yourself in their shoes. As a dog, you also want love, food, water and warm shelter. Why should you treat dogs in any other way as you would the person next to you? Would you want someone to take the necessary precautions to save your life when the time comes? Some of you might agree, some might not; Every one of us has their own opinion and the right to their own opinion, but that does not at all mean that you should act careless to the things other people care about more than you do. All of us wish that the world could be safer, less corrupt, and just in simple words, better. You can wish all you want but that's all it will stay, a wish. An incredibly funny and witty Afrikaans 2-man play that is set in a luxury retirement home in Cape Town called

Huis Phoenix. This is not any retirement home however, it's more of a reformatory for rich retired men

who have become a bit of a nuisance. House Pheonix comes complete with an ocean view, security fences and security guards with their not so friendly guard dogs. The only way to get out is in a coffin. Cronje's character, Pierre, also known as the blacksheep, has been there for quite some time, and has several failed escape attempts under his belt. When Kamper's character, Frans, who Kamper describes as an “ou hippie oom” arrives at House Phoenix the two bump heads. However, the two Ooms quickly realise their heads are far better used for plotting and planning their great escape and they start scheming right away.

Das Motto heißt: Ernähr' Dich richtig! Man möcht' das gerne praktizieren, doch wird es schwer, das auszuführen! Wenn man sich echt damit befaßt, ist Essen - Trinken eine Last. Denn alles, was da kreucht und fleucht ist mittlerweile stark verseucht! Die schlimmste Warnung - als Fanal ist wohl der BSE Skandal. Was soll man wohl dahinter wittern, wenn Rinder sich zu Tode zittern, die Knochen voll von Todes-Viren, wohin wird uns denn das noch führen? Der Wahnsinn sitzt in Frikadellen, in Eiern lauern Salmonellen, und - was im höchsten Maß' perfide: Das Müsli ist voll Pestizide. Vom Blütenstaub, den Bienen saugen, wird Honig auch wohl nicht mehr taugen. Wie auch das Wasser aus der Leitung hat manche Gifte in Begleitung! Auch Fisch scheint sich nicht mehr zu lohnen, weil in ihm Nematoden wohnen. Wozu soll man dem Menschen raten: Zu Gen-veränderten Tomaten ? Und schreibt man auf mit spitzem Stift, in welcher Nahrung ist kein Gift ? Dann sieht man seine Hoffnung schwinden, man kann tatsächlich keine finden ! Uns bleibt da nur noch überlassen, sich dieser Lage anzupassen, will man nicht einfach Hunger's sterben zugunsten uns'rer lieben Erben. Drum wird man sich nicht länger grämen und alles weiter zu sich nehmen. Dann plagt uns nicht mehr das Gewissen bei jedem kleinen Leckerbissen!! So hat man neulich erst berichtet von einem - der nur stets verzichtet, um die Gesundheit zu bewahren…….! …er wurd’ vom Auto überfahren !!! Liebe Freunde und Gönner des GeorgLudwig Kindergartens, hiermit möchten wir Sie über das anstehende Bauprojekt im Kindergarten informieren und um Ihre Unterstützung bitten. Der Georg-Ludwig Kindergarten wird in der Trägerschaft der Deutschen Evangelisch-Lutherischen Kirchengemeinde Swakopmund unter der Leitung von Pastor Tietz betrieben. Die operative Verantwortung liegt bei der pädagogischen Leitung in den Händen von Corinna Pfafferott und bei der administrativen Leitung unter Roswitha Sagner. Als Aufsichtsgremium dient das Eltern-Komitee unter Leitung von Patrick Kohlstaedt, Martin Wittneben und Christel Stergiadis. Der Kindergarten wurde im Januar 1910 eröffnet und im Jahre

1914 um das GeorgLudwig-Heim ergänzt. Benannt wurde das Heim zu Ehren der Großherzogin von Hessen nach ihren beiden Söhnen Georg und Ludwig, da 80% der Bausumme (damals 20 000 Mark) vom Hessischen Frauenverein gestiftet wurde. Der Bau wurde von Woermann, Brock & Co. ausgeführt. Somit kann davon ausgegangen werden, dass der Kindergarten einer der Ältesten des Landes ist und fast alle deutschen Familien mit dem Kindergarten verbunden waren bzw. sind. Das Grundstück mit den Gebäuden des Kindergartens liegt zwischen der Kristall-Galerie im Westen und dem Swakopmund Entertainment Centre im Osten. Besuchern der Küstenstadt ist die bunte Fassade des Kindergartens sicher ins Auge gefallen.

Dabei wird die kindgerechte und spielerische Förderung der Kinder von zwei Jahren bis zur Schulreife vor dem Hintergrund der deutschen Sprache in den Vordergrund gestellt.

Für das kommende Jahr haben wir viele Neuanmeldungen und eine Warteliste, womit die Kinderzahl unsere derzeitige Raumkapazität überschreitet. Daher haben wir einen dringenden Bedarf für ein neues Klassenzimmer und ein weiterer Raum soll als Übungs- und Förderraum dienen. Dort können Tanzklassen, Musikfrüherziehung sowie Kinderyoga und mehr angeboten werden. Auch kann in dem Raum integrativ gearbeitet werden, um Kinder bei der grobmotorischen Entwicklung zu unterstützen. Dieser Raum wäre eine Innovation zu dem bestehenden Kindergartenkonzept und eine einmalige Bereicherung zur Förderung unserer Kinder. Um unseren Traum zu verwirklichen, haben wir Material und Arbeitsstunden im Wert von N$ 500 000,- berechnet. Wir würden uns freuen wenn sich Spender dazu bereit erklärten, bestimmte Teile der benötigten Baumaterialien und sonstiger Bedürfnisse zu übernehmen. Die derzeitigen Reserven des Kindergartens ermöglichen uns nicht, den Bau auszuschreiben. Daher benötigen wir Spenden aller Art, um

dieses Projekt zu verwirklichen. Dabei sind alle Arten von Spenden willkommen: Sachspenden, Arbeitskraft, Geldspenden und organisatorische Unterstützung. Die Spender über N$ 5000 werden wöchentlich auf unserem Spendenbarometer notiert, welches beim Kindergarten angezeigt ist. Weiterhin werden wir den Spendenstand regelmäßig per E-Mail und andere Medien verteilen, um die Aufmerksamkeit auf unser Projekt zu lenken. An der Atlantikküste,in der Namibwüste Wie hatte alles begonnen? Georg-Ludwig-Kindergarten seit 1910 Swakopmund Pastor Hasenkamp, Pfarrer der Deutschen EvangelischLutherischen Gemeinde Swakopmund, legte den Grundstein zur Gründung des Georg-Ludwig-Kindergartens in Swakopmund. Es war allerdings der Hessische Landesverband des Frauenvereins, der den Kindergarten schlussendlich gründete und mit einer Schenkung von 20000 Mark zu gestalten begann. Ein Vorstand wurde gewählt. Man trat an das damalige Gouvernement heran und gleichzeitig bat man den Verein des Roten Kreuzes für die Kolonie in Berlin, um die Aussendung einer Kindergärtnerin. Der allererste Kindergarten zog in das Gebäude ein, das sich heute unmittelbar bei der Polizeistation schräg gegenüber den Räumlichkeiten des jetzigen Kindergartens befindet (siehe Foto). Der Kindergartenverein hatte sehr schnell 118 Mitglieder, die Kosten pro Kind sollten drei Mark betragen. Frl. Elisabeth Wiechmann, die erste Kindergärtnerin, trat am 13. Dezember 1909 hier ein. Am 3. Januar 1910 wurde der Kindergarten im ,,alten Beamtenkasino” gegenüber dem Alten Amtsgericht eröffnet, doch nur in der Theorie, denn gerade waren die Masern ausgebrochen... 1912 beauftragte der Vorstand die Firma Woermann Brock und ihren Ingenieur Kramer, einen Entwurf für ein Kindergarten-Gebäude anzufertigen. Die Stadtverwaltung wurde gebeten, ein entsprechendes Grundstück zur Verfügung zu stellen. Man sammelte Geld ein, indem erstmal ein Fest im Hotel Europa Hof

Liebe Küstenleser! Als Kind habe ich mich in unseren Rotbauchwürger verguckt - den mit der knallrot leuchtenden Brust und dem sexy roten Bürzel, dem tief-schwarzen Kopf sowie dem weißen Flügelstreif. Nicht umsonst wird dieser ästhetische Piepholl auch Reichsvogel genannt, erinnern seine markanten schwarz-weißroten Farben doch an diejenigen der Kaiserlichen Reichsflagge. Damals war es mir als Neutrum vor der Pu-

gelwelt ja meist die wesentlich schönere Variante aus, wo der Augapfel vor Entzücken Slalom fährt. Man muss schon Glück bzw. einen Vogelblick haben, wenn man die leuchtend roten Exemplare entdecken will, denn diese scheuen Piepmätze führen eine eher versteckte Lebensweise zwischen den Zweigen oder am Boden von Bäumen. Bevor man sie sieht, hört man meist zuerst ihren lauten, durchdringenden, aus glo-

Ab 1917 gab es wieder einen Kindergarten, der in den Räumlichkeiten des Lazaretts betrieben wurde, dort, wo sich heute das Prinzesssin Rupprechtheim befindet. Immerhin wurden bis zu 50 Kinder betreut. Am 11. Juli 1923 findet man folgende Bekanntgabe in der damaligen Zeitung: ,,Auch jetzt wäre an eine Fertigstellung des Baues nicht zu denken gewesen, wenn nicht in großzügiger Weise die Swakopmunder Handwerksmeister sich bereit erklärt hätten, alle Arbeit kostenlos zu erledigen.” Wieder hatte der Hessische Landesverband des Roten Kreuzes Zement, Türen und Farbe gestiftet, welche kostenlos von der Woermann-Linie nach Swakopmund transportiert wurden. Es liest sich fast wie ein Märchen, wenn man aus den alten Zeitungen erfährt, dass die monatlichen Unkosten des Kindergartens 1923 acht Pfund betrugen und sich diese acht Pfund aus dem Gehalt der Kindergärtnerin, der Miete und

der Reinigung summierten. Ganz schlecht war, dass die Einnahmen nur zwei Pfund betrugen, aber die Stadtverwaltung gab großzügigerweise einen monatlichen Zuschuss von vier Pfund. 1923 berichtet die Swakopmunder Zeitung von der Einweihung des Kindergartens am 17. November 1923. Am 20. Februar 1940 teilt die stellvertretende Vorsitzende, Elsa Boysen, dem Vorstand der ev. Kirchengemeinde Swakopmund mit, dass sie den Frauenverein vom Roten Kreuz aufgelöst habe. Sie bittet die Kir-

che, den Kindergarten zu übernehmen, was auch geschieht. 1966 findet ein Tauschhandel statt. Die Administration erhält das Grundstück, auf dem der Kindergarten untergebracht ist zwecks Erweiterung der Polizeistation. Dafür erhält die Deutsche Evangelische Kirche ein Grundstück in der Bahnhofsstraße (heute Theo-Ben Gurirab-Straße), wo der Georg-Ludwig-Kindergarten noch heute untergebracht ist.

Vielleicht, weil

Honda Quest Day Two - The Teams Head North Wednesday night the ten two-person teams for Honda Quest 2017 were announced around the campfire at the foot of the majestic Spitzkoppe mountains. Early Thursday morning they kitted up and headed north for Palmwag in the heart of the Damaraland. This was their first day of riding together as team mates. While the ride wasn't technically that hard, the 350km of dirt road was in a terrible state, with serious corrugations, making for a very trying experience. But the biggest challenge was the dust, which made for extremely taxing conditions with visibility sometimes down to 30 metres. Added to that was the hazard of foreign tourists used to driving on the right side of the road, creating dangerous situations for all in involved. The convoy suffered two punctures, which were a direct result of the bad road surface, as well as coming to the rescue of two stranded Dutch tourists who were stranded in the middle of nowhere with their rental car having had two punctures. The Quest convoy eventually settled down in the camp at Palmwag, servicing their motorcycles and support vehicles. They also continued with their daily routine of individual competitors having to give presentations to the rest of the group about African subjects they were briefed on before the start of Quest. Friday the Quest convoy will head for the town of Opuwo, the capital of the Kaokoland. Damaraland is one of the most scenic areas in Namibia, a huge, untamed, ruggedly beautiful region that offers an adventurous challenge. The Quest convoy caught sight of open plains and grassland, massive granite koppies, deep gorges and endless sandy wastes. Incredibly, these areas are able to sustain small, but wide-ranging, populations of desert-elephant, black rhino, giraffe, ostrich and springbok.

Erongo Regional Team at Dressage and Mutjavikua Office Show Jumping Sharlien Tjambari

The Erongo Regional U/17 soccer team, which will be representing Erongo at the Scorpion Zinc U/17 Soccer Cup Tournament in Windhoek this weekend paid a courtesy to the Governor of Erongo Clr Cleopas Mujtavikua at his office.

The first match of the tournament kicked off today at 07:25 and the last match ends on Sunday at 18:30. The team is a selection of twenty players out of 170 soccer players from schools from across the Region who participated in trials. "We have a young team that shows determination. We have also put them to the test to see if they are capable. They proved they can produce. The team spirit is there and I feel they are ready", said Lucky Shipanga the Head Coach of the Erongo Regional Team during the meeting. The group for the tournament are Group A: Omusati, Otjozondjupa, Omaheke and Kunene. In Group B: Erongo, Khomas, Kavango East, Oshikoto and Khomas, Group C: Kavango West, Zambezi, Oshana and Hardap. According to Shipanga, the team will play its first game today against Kavango East and then the second match against Ohangwena. The third match will be against Oshikoto and their final game will be against Khomas. Group winners will proceed to the semi-finals, whilst runner-ups in Group A and B will determine whose the fourth team. Addressing the boys in his boardroom, the Governor of Erongo Region Clr. Cleophas Mutjavikua said: "your performance at the tournament must go beyond normal. You are the cream of the crop of Erongo Region and the region is resting on your shoulder. Bring the Cup to Erongo Region". He also urged the boys to abstain from alcohol and drug abuse and to always keep fit. "Go play soccer well, play hard, come back to study hard for your final examinations and train more. You might go further than that in future" he concluded. The team consists of Reinhardt Kamatoto, Leighton Mogalty, Steven Damaseb, Girloy Bock, Thomas Bantam, Tuhafeni David, Nghindipohamba Nghimwatya, Tyrin George, Albertus Leonard, Prince Tjiueza, David Skeeper, Promise Gurirab, Dario Goraseb, John Goraseb, Penwell Nawaseb, Wesley Nawaseb, Nicky Daniels, Marcelinho Shikunda, Denzel Awaseb and Johannes Johannes.

From Friday morning through till Sunday, the Okahandja Reitclub, one of the oldest equestrian centres in the country, will be hosting close to eighty riders in different classes of dressage and show jumping. The dressage's begin early each morning with the top horses strutting their stuff to the dressage enthusiast on Sunday from 8:30 with the Pony Riders E and Junior/Adult EM classes. Show Jumping on the large and inviting arena begins on Friday afternoon with the Welcome Stakes for classes from 70cm to 1.40m. Excitement will then build up through Saturday morning with the American Jump-off and Precision and speed classes. This is followed by the grooming competition ahead of the tournament's showcase, the Annual Derby (a longer than normal course which includes cross-country type fences such as the Devil's Dyke, Table, Wall and Water Jumps) for the 1.00m, 1.10m and Open competitors. The Accumulator Classes will be run on Sunday morning ahead of the final parade and prize giving scheduled for 13:30.

COSSASA Ball Games in Namibia next year

Swakopmund Team in Quarter Finals

The Namibian Schools Sport Union (NSSU) sent a team to the recently concluded Confederation of School Sports Associations of Southern Africa (Cossasa) Ball Games hosted in Lesotho. The event was from 28 August to 2 September. The NSSU team that participated in the games included 30 officials and 176 children in the U/13 and U/17 age groups. They competed in the sport codes basketball, football, netball, rugby, tennis and volleyball. Namibia will be hosting this major event next year. The Namibian team returned with a total of 14 medals: four gold, three silver and 7 bronze and an overall third place. The U/17 football, U/13 and U/17 rugby and U/13 netball teams won gold. The silver medals went to the U/17 netball team and the U/13 and U/17 girl's football teams. The U/13 and U/17 boys and girls volleyball teams as well as the U/17 basketball boys and girls' teams and the U/17 tennis teams got bronze. The U/13 and U/17 boys tennis teams and the U/13 football team ended fourth in their respective sport disciplines. The National coordinator of the NSSU, Mr Solly Duiker, said: "all the U/17 teams did their best as the competition was very strong and the U/13 teams in particular showed a lot of potential. Namibia has a lot of talent that needs to be nurtured from the grassroots, Mr Duiker added. With the little financial support that

the NSSU have, the teams only trained for one week for these championships. Yet, still managed to give the other countries that are in training camps for two weeks a run for their money. The host of last year’s Cossasa Ball Games, Botswana, ended on top and successfully defended their title. Botswana won seven gold medals. Zimbabwe was second with six gold medals. This year’s host Lesotho ended fourth with South Africa in the fifth place. Swaziland and Malawi were in the six and seventh places respectively. And then the good news: Namibia will be hosting the 2018 COSSASA Ball Games! All sports codes should assist the NSSU in preparing children for the Games. Duiker is very excited about this development and says Namibia must go for the gold all out next year. The 2018 Games will be hosted in Windhoek.

The Swakopmund Ladies Volleyball Team with one of the sponsors and the President of the Namibian Volleyball Federation On Saturday, 2 September, the women's volleyball team qualified for the quarter finals at the first round of the 2017 Bank Windhoek NVF Cup. The event kicked off with 24 teams from all corners of the country participating. Teams from all Regional Associations participated in the Group Stage of the competition that was held at The Dome in Swakopmund. The competition was fierce and teams remained highly motivated throughout to make it to the quarter finals. This will be held at Katima Mulilo on 16 and 17 September 2017. With a total of N$46 000-00 in prize money up for grabs, individual prizes as well as the “right to brag” for the next year, the teams gave their all. Teams participated in four groups of three teams each. two teams per group advanced to the quarter finals. With sponsors Bank Windhoek, Dinolo African Deli and Erongo Med, the participants were treated to goodie bags with promotional items such as supplements and bottles as well as event t-shirts. The sponsors promoting their brands and products added to the flair of the event. It proved to be a relatively easy round for defending Champions Khomas Nampol in the men’s draw. The team won its games convincingly and set themselves up for a quarter final entry. The Unam Katima Mulilo men’s team made sure a local team will be part of the quarter finals at Katima, pushing volleyball stalwarts NDF to a 5 set match and winning their match against Unam Viper Rundu Campus. Rundu youngsters team Toxic Serves showed great heart, having taken a knock in their ranks through the drafting of most of their top players to the NSSU u/17 Cosassa Ballgames Team. Unfortunately, they did not manage to progress to the quarter finals, but they are certainly a team with a great future. In the ladie’s draw, last year's runners up SKW progressed with relative ease, showing their resolve and experience in competition. Khomas Nampol and NDF Ladies also made a convincing start to their campaign with the Khomas teams taking the top spots in their respective groups. The teams qualified are as follows: Men: Navy A, Six Star, Nampower, Erongo Nampol, NDF, Unam Katima Campus, Khomas Nampol and Eleven Warriors. Ladies: NDF, Oshana Nampol, Oshikoto Nampol, Toxic Serves, Khomas Nampol, Swakopmund, SKW and Unam Vipers Rundu ·The Quarter- and Semi Final games at Katima Mulilo will be the first time that the NVF Cup will be played under the care of the Zambezi Volleyball Association.
