Fuel Prices left unchanged for January The Ministry of Mines and Energy has announced it's the outcome of its monthly fuel price review for January 2021. In the statement, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Andreas Simon said fuel pump prices in Walvis Bay (port of entry) will remain at N$11.35 per litre for petrol and N$11.38 per litre for diesel. Simon said because the economy is still limping in the Covid-19 climate, the intention of the government is not to place additional burden on consumers. Simon highlighted the fact that the ploughing season is starting and that diesel is one of the petroleum products used on a large scale by the agricultural sector. “It is for that reason that the fuel review committee of the ministry has decided to keep the fuel pump prices for January 2021 unchanged and to finance the recorded under-recoveries from the National Energy Fund”, Simon said. Giving a summary on the status of the global oil market, Simon stated that a host of factors influences fuel pump prices, however, during the month of December, the international price of refined oil and the exchange rate between the
Nami-bian dollar and the US dollar had a bearing on fuel prices. Simon said, “during the same period, the exchange rate between the Namibian dollar and the US dollar strengthened. It appreciated on average from N$ 15.50 in November 2020 to N$14.92 in December 2020.” This appreciation helped keep under-recoveries at an acceptable level. The month of December recorded under-recoveries on both petrol and diesel. An under-recovery of 25.746 c/l was recorded on petrol while 50 ppm diesel recorded an under-recovery of -48.685 c/l. Petrol cost US $ 51.82 a barrel in December 2020, compared to US $ 44.15 in November 2020. Diesel's price per barrel was US $ 53.53 compared to US $ 44.79 per barrel in November 2020”, Simon added. Traditionally, under-recoveries call for equivalent increases in local fuel pump prices. However, the National Energy Fund, which absorbs under-reco-veries on behalf of consumers from time to time, is in a stable financial position and will thus absorb the under-recoveries recorded during this month.

Christmas and New Year's babies It was a Christmas and New Year's miracle for several local families as they welcomed their new additions to the world. Welwitschia Private Hospital in Walvis Bay said they had no Christmas births this year and only one boy and one girl were born on New Year's Day at its hospital. Walvis Bay State hospital had 3 Christmas babies, two boys and one girl. Sixteen babies were born on New Year's Day, seven boys and nine girls. The smallest baby born at Walvis Bay this festive season weighed 3 kg and the biggest, 3.8 kg. Swakopmund had 5 Christmas babies and four babies were born on New Year's Eve. The Swakopmund State Hospital said 5 babies, 2 girls and 3 boys were born on Christmas in its hospital. The Swakopmund District Hospital welcomed three baby girls on 1 January 2021. Altough the 3-year-old Spencer Mandela Nakale who went missing from his aunt's house at Lüderitz on 28 December 2020, is still missing, the toddler's father, Nelson Mandela Nakale is full of hope that his son will be found.
Heiko Dedig will remain in custody after being accused of raping two minors who were left in his care. Dedig made his first appearance in the Swakopmund Magistrates Court on Monday this week.

NIMT employees still await their salaries Rudi Bowe
About 220 employees of the Namibian Institute of Mining and Technology (NIMT) are still waiting for their outstanding 30% of their salaries for November and December 2020. According to a reliable source at NIMT, the institution has been marred with controversy since last year. The company only managed to pay 70% of their November 2020 salaries while their December 2020 salaries are still outstanding. The acting Chief Executive Officer of NIMT, Ralph Bussel, informed employees via an internal memo that they could only pay the 70% of their November 2020 salaries, while the remaining 30% will be paid as soon as possible. In the memo dated 26 November 2020, Bussel sincerely apologised for the inconvenience caused. The employees at NIMT said up to date none of them received their outstanding 30% for November 2020 and are still waiting for their December 2020 salaries. According to the employees no communications were issued to them with regard to the December
2020 salaries, although they have been enquiring about it on a daily basis. “Our salaries are delayed by 10 days which leave some employees stranded as they do not have money to get back to work on 18 January 2020.” Said one employee. The employees are worried and questions who will be carrying banking fees and other costs accumulated, as a result of non-payments. These employees say they did not even have a letter to take to their financial institutions and landlords explaining their situation. These employees are requesting the Ministry of Higher Education to intervene in the situation and bring NIMT to order. According to the Deputy Executive Director of the Ministry of Higher Education, Raimo Naanda, the ministry is aware of the situation and is working on it.

The shaving of our palm trees might look fashionable to some, but not only does it strip away the natural beauty of the environment, this “fashionable” practice also destroys the habitat of Palm Swifts (mainly found inland), doves, rock pigeons, sparrows finches and wagtails and leaves the palms vulnerable. The old dried-out leaves of these palms serve a very important purpose. These dried out, grey, dead leaves form a protective dense covering around the stems of palm trees. These leaves serve the same purpose as the bark of trees. The covering of the palm stem by these dead leaves, protects these palms from dehydration and disease. The African Palm Swift also known as the Windswael (Cypsiurus parvus) nests in palms such as the Washingtonia Palm found in large parts of Namibia. The stripping of the leaves of these palms at the coast leaves crushed eggs and baby birds on the ground. “A plea from many residents at the coast to stop the practice of stripping the bark and old leaves form our palm trees falls on deaf ears. “The biggest culprits are the Municipalities that clearly have absolutely no knowledge of these trees and the purpose they serve
in nature. Palm Swifts, in particular do not land to gather nesting material, but they gather nesting material floating in the air, on their wings. With this material, they fly in under the dead palm leaves. Swifts use their saliva to glue the nesting material onto the dead palm leaf to form a tiny nest. Swifts mate while clinging to the leaves. Using saliva, the female glues each egg (she usually lays two) on the palm leaf and the nest. When the eggs hatch, the chicks cling to the dead palm leaves until they are ready to fly. They take their first flight by dropping out from underneath the leaves into to the sky. Palm Swifts can't take off horizontally. They need the dead leaves of Palms to cling to and drop from in order to take flight.
Germany supports the Namibian Government in its endeavor to ensure business continuity and economic revival of SMEs
On 17 December 2020, a loan agreement between the Development Bank of Namibia (DBN) and the Development Bank of Germany (KfW) had been signed. KfW provides refinancing for DBN's nonagricultural small business loan scheme which forms an integral part of Ministry of Finance “Economic Stimulus and Relief Package to Mitigate the Impact of COVID-19”. The interest-reduced loan amounts to approx. N$455 million (or 25 million EUR). DBN will provide the actual loans to non-agricultural SMEs that have experienced significant losses of income as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The relief measure is aimed at supporting cash flows and continued economic pro-
ductive activities. The loans can also be used for investing into new business areas that help strengthening resilience of companies for future shocks. The loan is backed by the government guarantee, underscoring the resolve of the Government of the Republic of Namibia to promote access to affordable finance for SMEs, especially during these unprecedented
times. “The extension of this loan facility comes as a good shot in the arm for the SME sector at this point in time. It is complementary to the suite of support packages extended to the SME sector as the engine of economic recovery, growth, jobs and wealth creation”, stated Mr Ipumbu Shiimi, Minister of Finance. The DBN forecasts that the funding offers much
sought financial relief to around 200 SMEs. The DBN will customise the loans based on individual enterprise needs. Industries such as tourism, hospitality, and transport and logistics, having experienced the largest loss of revenue due to lock-down related effects nationally, regionally and globally will be prioritized. The highly valued support will contribute to preserving continuity of SME business activities and build a foundation for recovery, said CEO of DBN, Martin Inkumbi. Although the Bank will, through its normal SME lending window give attention to startups, the overwhelming priority for this Covid-19 relief measure loans will be to preserve business continuity and hopefully preserve jobs. “We are proud to able to support the Namibian economy with affordable access to credit for businesses in Namibia

partnership with the Ministry of Industrialisation and Trade and Ministry of Finance which targets Start-Up Businesses as well as SMEs. “Start-up Namibia”, for example has disbursed approx. 600 Startup Survival Grants (worth N$15 000 each) to formally registered startups not older than five years. While the GIZprogramme “Promotion of Business Advisory and Transformation Services” is offering a grant scheme “Pitching for Recovery P4R)” in which micro enterprises in all 14 regions have the opportunity to receive financial support and coaching for their ideas on how to recover their businesses. In a close cooperation with between GIZ and the Development Bank of Namibia (DBN), selected SMEs and companies from the tourism sector are also offered a supportive restructuring of their loans.
Background During the global COVID-19 pandemic, Germany has so far provided N$850 million to Namibian partners to fight the pandemic and to mitigate the respec-tive challenges on livelihoods and businesses in Namibia. Beyond approximately N$530 million that have been mobilized to support SMEs and Start-ups to support their business continuity and recovery, N$250 million was mobilized to support Namibia in mitigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic in the conservation and tourism sector. This builds on more than N$70 million that have been dedicated to various COVID-19 related immediate support measures in ongoing programs, e. health and prevention measures in informal settlements and markets or public transport

New State of the Art Dialysis Clinic in Walvis Bay The Walvis Bay Dialysis Center (WBDC) opened doors to its first patients on 7 December 2020. Celebrating an undying camaraderie On Tuesday 5 January, 12 golden girls, who went to St. George's Diocesan primary school, Windhoek, met for a reminiscent cup of coffee in Swakopmund. All are in the 60-age bracket (some tipping their hats at 70), some started school in the very late 1950s, but all were together at some stage during the 1960s; and those who started school in 1961 know some of the gals for 60 years! A new home for Christmas Rudi Bowe
A German-based, non-profit, and non-governmental association Pallium - Research and Aid for Social Projects recently handed over a house to Magrietha Salon (Maggie) and her fifteen foster children in the DRC informal settlement, Swakopmund. Swakopmund resident Johan Kruger, who runs a small aid initiative, and businessman Johan Kotze a tours and transport operator) took the initiative to arrange funding for the project through the German-based association that has been supporting social projects in Namibia since 2004. The donations for the project were made available to Pallium by the Lange Rode Foundation in Hamburg, Germany. The new 112m² house constructed from cement fibre sheets with a 28m² living and cooking area, forms the centre of the new house, surrounded by 5 bedrooms that are 16m² each. There are two small rooms with showers and three beds per room. An additional room for Maggie was constructed for N$147 000 and for N$55 000, interior furnishings and household goods could be purchased. Maggie said that this came to a complete surprise to her and her children and they are extremely happy to have their own brand-new home. “In addition to my own children I also care for foster children I have taken in. Street children and other vulnerable children can always count on getting a warm meal at Maggie's soup kitchen. Donations to the soup kitchen comes from local businessman, Wilko Aschenborn form Buddy Industries”, Maggie added. The new house also provides space for this important initiative. This all started when a community worker, Herman Uirab, brought Johan Kruger and Johan Kotze to Maggie, who until then have been living with the children in a small hut made of tin and scrap metal. The hut contained no furniture and had a leaky roof made of plastic sheets. Cardboard boxes and tattered mattresses served as sleeping places. Newly elected chairperson of the Erongo Regional Council, Ciske Smith-Howard attended the handover and was very impressed by the solid house, which was built in December in only 10 days by local contractor Gideon Grobler. Other social projects in the DRC are planned and will be realised in close cooperation with Smith-Howard. In October 2020 Pallium donated a similar but smaller house for a homeless family in the DRC informal settlement in Swakopmund. Pallium also supports Johan Kruger's Project Restoring Dignity and Christian Integrity, that distributes food vouchers to people who otherwise feed themselves from garbage bins (and also to other vulnerable people) in Swakopmund Anyone that would like to support the projects can contact Pallium (info@pallium-ev.com)

NIIHA Championships ended the year on Contributed a high The Bank Windhoek 2020 Namibia Ice and Inline Hockey Association (NIIHA) Championships that were held from the 18th of December to the 22nd of December at the Dome in Swakopmund ended the year on a high. President of the NIIHA Bernd Bajorat said that all 5 clubs registered with the association participated in the only NIIHA sanctioned event for the year of 2020. Bajorat said “From the perspective of sport, this was a difficult year for Inline Hockey…where all the tournaments for the year were cancelled due to Covid19, which held the country in its grips for most of 2020.” “With the support of Bank Windhoek, NIIHA was able to put together a Championship Tournament which lasted 5 days and saw most teams play a minimum of 5 games per division. The normal number of games for a Championship would be 2 games per division” Bajorat said. Bajorat said that the aim of the NIIHA Championships, outside of finishing the year with a tournament to salvage a mostly disappointing season, was to offer its members an opportunity to compete, work and challenge each other for the right to be called the National Champion in each age division. “Even though the number of spectators was significantly reduced due to restrictions, the action on the court was as fierce as always” Bajorat said. In the end, of the 9 competitive divisions offered this year, the Coastal Pirates won 6 Championships, Scorpions won 1, Badgers won 1 and Kamikaze won 1. In total there were 174 games played over five days. It was the muchneeded release for the hockey players and a great way to end the year, getting to do the thing all the players love, play the game and enjoy the sport. Bajorat thanked Bank Windhoek the main sponsor, and additional sponsorships from Deep Catch Namibia and Metallum Fabrication for their support, this event was able to take place and give the hockey community something it was desperately missing all year long. Results: In the 8U Division: The Coastal Pirates took the Gold medal in a tight game against the Scorpions, winning 5-4. The Bronze medal went to Cazadores. Hendre Van Niekerk was named the game's MVP. In the 10U Division: The Badgers beat the Scorpions 5 to 1 to claim the Championship while Cazadores took the Bronze. Vigo Bajorat was named the MVP of the Championship game. In the 12U Division: The Scorpions beat Kamikaze 9-1 and Theo Borstlap was named MVP. The Coastal Pirates won Bronze. In the 14U Division: The Coastal Pirates won against Cazadores 4-2. James de Jager was named the game's MVP. The Scorpions took Bronze. In the 16U Division: The Coastal Pirates beat the Scorpions 4-2 and brought home the Gold medal. Pablo Laporte was named the MVP of the game. The Bronze medal went to Kamikaze. In the 18U Division: This division suffered from numbers and was condensed to 3 teams, Team Black, Team White and Team Red; all available players were drafted to one of the three teams and those teams played each other…similar to an all-star game. Team Black won the gold medal with Amandus Röttcher (Coastal Pirates) named the MVP of the winning team in this division. In the LADIES Division: The Coastal Pirates beat the Scorpions 8-0. Christine Röttcher was named the game's MVP. Kamikaze took the Bronze medal. In the OPEN Division: The Coastal Pirates BLACK team beat the Scorpions 3-0. Arian van der Plas was named the MVP. The Coastal Pirates ORANGE team took the Bronze medal. In the LADIES MASTERS Division: The Coastal Pirates beat the Scorpions 3-0, with Bridgit Justinussen being awarded the MVP trophy. The Badgers took the Bronze. In the SENIORS (MASTERS) Division: Kamikaze beat the Coastal Pirates 2-1. Jeff Bonazzo was named the MVP. Badgers won the Bronze medal. In the B Divisions: 8U Badgers won Gold. Colin Hoffman was named MVP. 10U Kamikaze won Gold. Enya Fortsch was named MVP. 12U Coastal Pirates won Gold. Barend Morkel was named MVP.

The 22-year-old Phillip Seidler from Swakopmund won the Pupkewitz Jetty Mile for the eighth year in a row on 27 December 2020. Amica de Jager won the women's race for the second consecutive year. A total of 143 swimmers completed the 14th edition of the Pupkewitz Jetty Mile. The jetty mile started at Tiger Reef past the jetty towards the Mole, where the finish line was situated. Despite hitting a sand bank at the beginning of the race and injuring his shoulder it took Seidler only 20 minutes and 10 seconds to complete the nautical sea mile swim (1.85km) swim and short beach run to the finish line, while the South African Amica de Jager won in a time of in 22 minutes and 27 seconds. Seidler was rushed to hospital afterwards and is now recovering from torn muscles and a light concussion. Jetty Mile organiser Yvonne Brinkmann of OTB Sport, said that in order to adhere to health precautions, we had a decent number of participants. Due to Covid-19 regulations, we divided it into four separate events and in different camps consisting of a male, female, the sprint and the kiddies' race. Brinkmann added that due to COVID-19 pandemic there was also no prize giving held after the event, in order to avoid a large crowd. The respective winners collect their prizes on Monday between 10:00 and 13:00 at's OTB Sport shop in Swakopmund. The 1.92km open-water race started at 15:30 at Tiger Reef. Participants swam past the jetty towards The Mole, where the finish line was situated. Twenty teams participated in the 64th Swakopmund Football Club (SFC), Xmas Cup on 26 to 29 December 2020 at the sport field in Swakopmund. SFC has been hosting this annual Christmas soccer tournament since 1956. This year was no exception with 36 matches over four days in the Xlassico division, which catered for players aged 40 and older, a Social and League divisions. Sparta United F.C from Walvis Bay won the 2020 SFC Xmas Social Cup for a consecutive second year after they beat Swakopmund rivals Celtic F.C 4-1 in a penalty shootout after the two teams played to a two-all draw after regulation time in the final. Diego Fransman from Sparta United F.C, walked away with the most valuable player award while Tyrone "Tyga" Mouton, also from Sparta United F.C, walked away with Top goal scorer (6 goals) in the Social division. Kaizer Chiefs took home the SFC Xmas Xlassico Cub, which catered for players aged 40 and older. The men from the harbour town were too good for their opponents as they ended the competition of top of the league with Chinese Naughty Boys in second place, with Atlantis F.C and SFC Swakopmund in third and fourth place respectively. Ramblers Soccer Academy and Football Club from Windhoek won the SFC Xmas League Cup with OB Eleven second with SFC and SFC U20 third and fourth respectively. Gerald GĂźther, the SFC's technical adviser, says they sincerely appreciate the players' dedication as they enjoy their soccer passion and thanked all spectators and players for the great games and the atmosphere.
