Floris Steenkamp Several hundred pocket knives, traditional weapons and housebreaking implements were confiscated from members of the public during stop and search operations in towns and settlements across Erongo over the festive period. The stop and searches were part of the nationwide anticrime project, Operation Hornkranz, which the Namibian Police carry out in cooperation with members of the Namibia Defence Force. Operation Hornkranz is due to continue until 15 January. A clear warning was issued over the weekend by the Regional Commander of the Namibian Police in Erongo, Commissioner Andreas Nelumbu, that any kind of dangerous object will be confiscated if found on a person and could also lead to criminal prosecution. “This is how armed
our nation is”, Commissioner Nelumbu remarked when some of the confiscated weapons were showcased to the media at police headquarters in Walvis Bay on Friday. Adding clearly most of these items found on people were clearly there to cause harm. The police and soldiers are also unconvinced if you explain self-defence as the reason for carrying a knife or any other sharp object. These weapons we confiscated definitely helped to reduce the crime rate in Erongo over the festive period. We also prevented criminal activities like burglaries by confiscating items like bolt cutters, screw drivers and even leveraging tools which can be used
to force open doors and windows, it was further explained. The items showcased to the media were only those confiscated in the Walvis Bay crime prevention cluster which includes the town itself, Narraville, Kuisebmond and Dolphin Bay area and Langstrand. According to Commissioner Nelumbu, should all the confiscated weapons eventually be arriving from police stations across Erongo it could amount to thousands. Operation Hornkranz will continue to target areas around drinking places, streets and other areas identified as crime hotspots. Be warned, it was explained, stop and searches by members of the po-

Eileen van der Schyff Walvis Bay boast the birth of triplets. The two boys and a girl made their arrival into this world at noon on 3 January at the Walvis Bay state hospital by caesarean. The first boy born weighed 2.7 kg, the second weighed 2.2 kg and the girl was born last with the lowest weight of the three, weighing only 1.5 kg. The triplets' mother Selima Heita is in fact also one of twins. She has a twin brother. The triplet's father, Henok Amadhila is very proud of their three blessings. Continues on page 2

A 21-year-old was busted for allegedly dealing in cannabis and Mandrax tablets in Narraville on Sunday. Namib times spoke to the hospital's Gynaecologist, Dr. Joseph Luis Miranda, who helped deliver the three babies. Miranda had a blossoming year when it comes to twins. “I started at this hospital last year in May and have in the few months here, delivered twelve pairs of twins.” Miranda said. As far as Namib Times could determine, these triplets are the first to be born here without complications. The coast also saw the births of several babies on Christmas and New Year's Day: The Swakopmund state hospital saw the birth of four babies on Christmas Day. Two boys and two girls. On New Year's Eve, one baby was born at the District Hospital. The stork gave Cottage Medi-Clinic a skip. No babies were born there on either Christmas or New Year. Two baby girls were born in Walvis Bay state hospital on Christmas no births on New Year's Day, reports Sharlien Tjambari and Isaac Chikosi from the Namib Times Swakopmund office. A baby boy was born at Welwitschia Private Hospital on Christmas Day and another on New Year's Day.

By Friday, 5 January a total of 181 accidents were reported in Erongo in the period since 1 December. A total of five people died and a further 28 people were injured ranging from slight injuries to serious injuries. These statistics were provided by the Namibian Police's Regional Commander in Erongo, Commissioner Andreas Nelumbu on Friday. Commissioner Nelumbu said it was particularly worrisome given the ages of the deceased: respectively one year and eight months old, a two-year-old, a 27-yearold, a 30-year-old and a 49-year-old. Accidents are depriving our nation of our future and of our productive citizens, Nelumbu remaked. Other incidents as reported on 5 January by Commissioner Nelumbu: Drunken Driving: a total of 50 cases were repored
in the Region, leading to 51 people charged for drunken driving offenses. In an accident between two vehicles both drivers were found to be over the limit. Suicide: four people ended their lives at their own hands over the festive period. In all these instances too, the deceased persons were young people. Drownings: two people drowned. In the one incident a child drowned in an oxidation pond at Uis and it was confirmed on Friday that the man who went missing at Langstrand during a music festival drowned (see related report in today's edition).
Two murders were reported. In both cases the alleged perpetrators were women. In the first incident at Spitzkoppe settlement a man died after he was assaulted by his girlfriend and her sister. In the second incident at Mondesa at Swakopmund a woman died after she was pushed over during an argument. She fell, hit her head against a hard object and later died. The incident took place when a man's daughter intervened during an argument between her father and his girlfriend. She pushed the girlfriend out of the house which led to the person falling and sustaining fatal injuries.

Terminal completed by May ‘19
The Namibian Ports Authority (Namport) anticipates construction of the container terminal on reclaimed land to conclude by May this year. The terminal would be commissioned within months thereafter. Just 2 days after Christmas on 27 December 2018, a 19 yearold-man was found hanging from a wire from a tree at a river bed a few meters from his parent's house.

An inquest into the alleged hanging at Farm Stinkbank in the Usakos district has been launched. It is believed that Richard Ronaldo Garoeb arrived at his parents' house and it is further alleged that an argument broke out between Garoeb (deceased) and his mother about him who started eating the food out of the pot on the stove. Garoeb then walked out. According to police reports, the deceased was found an hour later by a herdsman in the area. No foul play is suspected. The body was taken to Walvis Bay Police Mortuary for post mortem examination to determine the cause of death. In a separate incident 49-year-old Saulus Shaanika Shikwena was found hanging from the roof by a relative on Friday 28 December last year. The deceased who hung himself at his residence in Kormorant Street, Tutaleni in Swakopmund allegedly left a suicide note in which he wrote about work related problems. A cousin of the deceased reports, “he has not gone to work since 27 November 2018�. The body was taken to Walvis Bay Police Mortuary for post mortem examination to determine the cause of death. Investigation continues.
Naruses sisters behind bars for murder Sharlien Tjambari Two sisters Erna Naruses (36) and Mellietjie Naruses (31) ended behind bars on a charge of murder, after Erna's boyfriend, Willem Rudolf succumbed to his injuries when the two sisters assaulted him. Rudolf was struck with a pot on the head and kicked in the stomach. He started coughing up blood and died soon after. This gruesome incident took place at Erna Naruses' ghetto in Spitzkoppe where Rudolf was also staying. After the attack, the sisters allegedly locked Rudolf in the ghetto and only returned in the morning hours. The sisters then contacted the family of Rudolf and told them they discovered the body in the ghetto. The family then notified the police. The suspects were however arrested on 28 December 2018 and appeared on 31 December at the Usakos Magistrate Court. The case was postponed to 30 January 2019 for the suspects to get legal advice while investigations continue. The accused sisters remain in custody. A post mortem examination is still to be conducted to determine the cause of death.
Woman robbed and stabbed Sharlien Tjambari in Swakopmund Adriette Lucks (46) was robbed and stabbed by three suspects last week in Swakopmund's Prominade area. A case of robbery with aggravating circumstances was opened at Swakopmund Police station. It is alleged that, on Wednesday 02/01/19 at around 14:00 the suspects stabbed the complainant with an unknown object on the left hand and back and grabbed her handbag containing documents, a make-up bag and 1 power bank as well as other items with a combined value of N$6 800. Only the handbag and some documents were recovered. The three suspects, Gideon Amakali (20), Henry Amunyela (18) and Gotlieb Mbango (26) were expected to appear at Swakopmund Magistrate Court yesterday.

“The Pearl of Norway” called at Walvis Bay The world's oldest fully rigged tall ship, the Sørlandet, commonly known as the 'Pearl of Norway', arrived in Walvis Bay last Wednesday, 2 January. On board were the crew and 62 Grade 11 and 12 students, and their teachers. The ship was built in 1927 and is a sailing campus of the A+ World Academy, a mobile college that provides 10 months of rigorous academic teaching as well as fostering personal, social and cultural development in a global setting.
'We develop leaders with grit while sailing the world', boasts the college leaflet. It goes on to state: 'All instruction happens at sea while moving from one destination to the next. Seven international teachers lead, guide and support our students around the clock to prepare them for the most elite universities.' 60% of the students come from Norway, with the remaining 40% coming from other countries, making a truly global student body. The Sørlandet travelled from Kristiansand in Norway to Argentina, then across the Atlantic Ocean to South Africa, north to Walvis Bay. On its voyages from Argentina to Cape Town and on to Walvis Bay, the vessel was able to rely more than 60% on wind. While in Walvis Bay, they ship was visited by officials from the city, recognising the twinning arrangement that exists between Walvis Bay and Kristiansand. Furthermore, Professor Peter H. Katjavivi, Speaker of the National Assembly, visited the ship of Friday, 4 January, and gave a presentation to the students and staff: In what follows, the presentation which provided an interesting historic similarities shared by Namibia and Norway. “As you might have gathered by now, Norway might be far away from this part of the world, but there have been connections between some Norwegian people and Walvis Bay and Namibia for a long time. The name Walvis Bay, as you may already know, comes from the whales that were caught in the sea nearby. The Dutch started whaling around Walvis Bay 300 years ago, in 1720. Then from 1780 onwards they were joined by people from America, France and Norway, who also came to hunt whales. From that time until the First World War, hundreds of thousands of whales were killed. They were mainly used for their oil and blubber (fat) and for meat. Fortunately, whales are now protected under international environmental agreements. From the 1960s to 1990, a good number of Norwegians joined us in support of our struggle for the freedom and independence of Namibia. In the 1980s, the town of Elverum in Norway became an important centre for solidarity and support for our people's struggle. Likewise, in Oslo the Norwegian Council for Southern Africa actively promoted the cause of freedom and independence in southern Africa. In more recent years, Walvis Bay has been twinned with Kristiansand. As we will discover, Namibia and Norway share some similar historical experiences. Both countries were occupied by Germany, although at different periods in history. The German colonial occupation of Namibia between 1884 and 1915 was brutal. Norway was later to experience similar brutalities at the hands of the Nazi occupation regime during the Second World War. Two years ago, in 2017, I visited the Centre for the Studies of the Holocaust and Religious Minorities in Oslo, where I learned about what happened in Norway during the Nazi occupation, and the fate of the Jewish people, in particular. In the cases of both Namibia and Norway, the people were active in opposing foreign occupation through resistance movements. Namibian resistance to German colonial occupation was brutally crushed through the genocide of the Herero and Nama communities, and I will talk more about this shortly. The defeat of Germany in the First World War marked the end of German rule in Namibia, and South Africa became the occupying power until 1990. We also resisted South African rule, which was based on the apartheid system that oppressed black people. The resistance was led by SWAPO, which is now the governing party in independent Namibia. From the 1960s to 1990, the SWAPO leadership was based in exile, in other African countries. This is also similar to the Norwegian experience, where King Haakon and the government had to operate from outside Norway from June 1940. Happily, both our nations succeeded in gaining their liberty and self-determination.

The giant lit-up Christmas tree of Erongo RED in front of the civic centre in Walvis Bay caught fire several days before the day it was actually intended for and armed response patrol of G4S spotted the tree burning in the early hours of 22 December. The Walvis Bay fire brigade was called to the scene to extinguish the fire. A short circuit is believed to have cut the tree's life short.

Body of Dexter Netha found Devastated family members and friends gathered this morning at the police morgue in Walvis Bay, only hours after their worst fear became reality. The body of the 19-year-old Dexter Netha, who went missing at the "Sound of Summer" music festival on 28 December last year, has been found. Commissioner Andreas Nelumbu of the Namibian Police in Erongo confirmed at a media briefing this morning that Netha's body washed ashore at Langstrand. Netha's body was found at around 08:00 by a person who was walking along the beach NorthWest of Long beach and about 1.8 km from where the "Sound of Summer" music festival took place, where he was last seen alive. A post mortem examination will be carried out to determine the cause of death. Although all indications are there that Netha drowned, police investigators keep an open mind and wants to determine whether there were any prior events that could have led to Netha ending up in the sea and whether his death might have been caused by something else than drowning. A man was arrested in Mondesa for raping a woman sharing a house with him. The two are unrelated. It is alleged that, on Friday, 28/12/18 at around 23:00 suspect: Elias Nashima, 28- years-old N/male had sexual intercourse with victim: 21 years old N/ female, under coercive circumstances in the victim's room, at a house in new DRC location next to Matutura suburb. The suspect appeared in Swakopmund Magistrate Court on 31 December 2018. Investigation continues.

Just before New Year's Eve Mondesa recorded two cases of arson. On 29 December around 07:00 Ivan Francis (46) allegedly broke into a shack in Mondesa and burned the bed sheets. The total value of the damaged property is estimated at N$800. It is further alleged that the suspect is the ex-boyfriend of the complainant's sister. The ex-girlfriend is also staying in the same ghetto, but she was not in the area during the incident. A search was launched to trace and arrest the suspect but without success. A case of housebreaking with intent to commit a crime and malicious damage to property was opened at the Mondesa Police station. According to information received by Erongo regional police crime investigating coordinator Erastus Iikuyu, Francis threatened to burn down the shack. Later that day at around 21:00 the same shack caught fire and spread to a second shack, a house and two shacks on that plot. The fire further spread to one more shack. five shacks were completely burnt down. It is suspected that the same suspect: Ivan Francis is the one who set the ghetto on fire. He was later arrested and appeared at Swakopmund Magistrate Court on 31 December 2018. Investigation continues.

Beach Bash Volleyball Sparta Hockey
club Sparta Hockey club is getting ready to dominate the Namibian hockey leagues this year. Sparta Hockey club is starting 2019 with a big bang. The club started off in 2015 and have competitively taken part in the national indoor league every year with some good results. Without a coach we did our best and touched those podium spots, but not quite reaching full potential. This year we do things differently. This year we have that drive as we have appointed a new coach, a very well-known coach in the hockey industry of Namibia, Ruan Oosthuizen. Ruan has achieved many great results with his former teams and he is a FIH/AHF qualified coach with 10 years of experience he is currently the NSSU u14, NHU u18, school 1st league and premier club coach as well as Premier outdoor and night league championship coach and Psi coach for 3 years (Gold at 2017 nationals). He achieved Gold at 2017 & 2018 Nationals where he was appointed as the u16 African All Star coach for Europe 2020. He is a hardworking, committed and driven coach who strives for success. As Coach at Sparta Hockey Club this year he is insuring Sparta Hockey to be top of the leader board in 2019 with his amazing coaching skills. Training starts today 8 January 2019 at Jan Wilken Indoor centre from 19:30-21:00. We invite anyone who would like to learn more about Sparta Hockey club and what we do, to come see what we are all about. Rudi Bowe Eight Pro teams & twenty-one Social teams participated in the Bank Windhoek Beach Bash Volleyball tournament hosted by Namib Rage Events. This was the seventh and final Timeout Beach Series event of the year that were held at the beautiful settings of Langstrand, the perfect combination of sun, sea, sand, dunes and beach volleyball. Van der Westhuizen crowned top senior golfer
The Walvis Bay Gymnastic Club (WBGC), recently rewarded their Gymnasts that performed well during 2018. WBGC has concluded another excellent year with results which speaks for itself. The coaches exceeded their limits and produced high quality gymnasts. Over the years the Walvis Bay Gymnastics Club saw many gymnasts come and go. This year, WBGC decided to honour the gymnasts who recently left with Appreciation Awards. These Appreciation Awards were only given to gymnasts that have been with the club for many years. An 80-year-old golfer, Piet van der Westhuizen, was recently crowned as the winner of the Bank Windhoek Swakopmund Coastal Senior Open Golf Day tournament. The annual Bank Windhoek Swakopmund Coastal Senior Open Golf Day tournament, took place at the Rossmund Golf Course on Thursday, 13 and Friday, 14 December 2018. Although the event involves the play-offs between the coastal and the central seniors, individual entrants also participated. Van der Westhuizen, who is also a former Bank Windhoek employee, won the tournament with a total of 72 points. The tournament attracted 44 players who competed for the ultimate prize. Tim Botha scooped up the Bank Windhoek Player of The Day Award. The event was part of the Bank Windhoek Summer Festival which is being hosted this holiday season for visitors to the coast. As a sponsor, the Bank has lined up entertainment and activities for every holiday maker who plans on celebrating the festive season at the coast. The Bank Windhoek Summer Festival will conclude on Saturday, 22 December 2018.
W&B Hardware SFC Coastal Open SFC hosted the highly anticipated annual W&B Hardware Coastal Open Squash Championship in Swakopmund with thirty-eight men's and twelve ladies' players that competed for the titles. Leading Namibian men's squash players included Danie Greeff, the defending champion, Sven Gruttemeyer, Angelo Titus, Brandon Grane and Immanuel Amorongo, while the lady's event was graced by Chantel de Gouveia, the defending champion, Christiane Beulker, Charne Fourie and Carla Cummings. The C-Division final was between Ricardo von Stein and Wilco Rugheimer, with Ricardo taking the spoils. The B-Division final was contested between Marcelino Koopman and Robert Schaaf with Marcelino taking the win after a passionate display of commitment by both players.The third-place play-off was between Michael Truter and Werner van Riet with Michael taking the win. The Ladies Final saw Chantel de Gouveia taking on Christiane Beulker with Chantel successfully defending her title after a gymnastic display of swift movement over the court. She took the match 3-0. Charne Fourie took the third place after defeating the master player, Carla Cummings. The men's A-Division semi-final matches were between Danie Greeff and Angelo Titus on Court A and Sven Gruttemeyer and Brandon Grane on Court B. Both matches went the full distance and lasted an hour each with an unrivaled display of skill and emotional intelligence. The spectators were treated to some of the best squash that 2018 had on offer with Danie Greeff and Brandon Grane winningtheir matches 3-2 with the slightest of margins. The championship final took place on Sunday, 16 December at 16:00 and left the spectators in awe of the players' ability to retrieve tight shots and outwit their opponents. Brandon Grane was victorious after a hard-fought battle with the defending champion. The third-place play-off between Sven Gruttemeyer and Angelo Titus was equally filled with a passionate display of skill with Sven taking the win. The SFC Squash Chairman, Rudi Koekemoer, was the master of ceremonies during the prizegiving and thanked Danie Jansen from W&B Hardware and Building Supplies for the largest sponsorship in the history of the club with prize money of N$20 000. All the players also received branded sport shirts, “goody bags� and a traditional Namibian braai apart from the prize money. A lucky draw, which included a fitting prize of a gazebo, was won by Willem van Duijvenbode. A special word of thanks was also extended to Frikkie and Dianne Orban from Abenteuer Afrika for sponsoring the use of a large marque tent to host festivities. A special word of remembrance was made for the late Bernd (Gugus) Gruttemeyer that served on the SFC Squash Committee and will always be remembered for his contribution to the SFC Sport Club and community.

Zimbabwean women's cricket team The Zimbabwe Women's senior cricket team as demolished the Namibian senior cricket team to won the Namib Desert Women T20 Challenge with two games to spare. It is the first time in the history of women's cricket in Namibia that a Women's International Cricket Tournament is hosted at Sparta United Club in Walvis Bay. The Namibian and Zimbabwe Women's teams are using the series as preparation for the International Cricket Council T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier to be held in Harare in May. First match: Namibia lost by 6 wickets. The Namibia women lost the toss and were sent in to bat first by the more experience women from Zimbabwe. The Namibians scored 95 runs in 20 overs for the loss of 5 wickets with their highest contribution with the bat coming from opener Adri van der Merwe with 41 runs from 53 balls and Kayleen Green who took two wickets with the ball in hand. Zimbabwe made a great start as they defeated Namibia with 11balls to spare. Pace bowler Josephine Nkomo (player of the match) was the star performer for Zimbabwe with ball in hand as she picked up three wickets for 12 runs in four overs and Chipo Tiripano was the top scored with an unbeaten 40 runs off 48 deliveries. Second match: Namibia lost by 8 wickets. Zimbabwe Women won the toss and send the Namibians in to bat first. The local women could only score 77 runs in 20 overs with Adri van der Merwe scored the most runs (37 from 58 balls) with Kayleen Green again took two the only wickets with the ball in hand. Zimbabwe defeated with a score of 80 runs in just 11.4 over. Pace bowler Josephine Nkomo and Nomvelo Sibanda took one wicket each and Precious Marange and Anesu Mushangwe with two wickets each and Chipo Tiripano (player of the match) the top scorer with an unbeaten 31 runs off 23 deliveries.
Third match: Namibia lost by 57 runs. Namibia won the toss and send Zimbabwe in to bet first. The tourist set a score of 136 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. Mary-Anne Musonda the Zimbabwean captain was the highest scorer with 60 runs from 49 balls with Nomatter Mutasa with ball in hand took three wickets, Loreen Phiri and Nomvelo Sibanda two wickets and Precious Marange one wicket. Namibia could only score 79 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. The highest score for the host is Arrasta Diergaardt with 22 runs from 27 ball and once again Kayleen Green was the best bowler as she got 2 wickets. The other wicket takers for Namibia were Sune Wittmann, Arrasta Diergaardt, Reehana Khan, Didi Foerster and Sylvia Shihepo with one wicket each. The Zimbabwean coach Adam Chifo said that he is overwhelmed for the performance of the ladies and that this series is part of their preparation for the International Cricket Council T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier to be held in Harare in May. The annual Weskus 4x4 Vasbyt held at Dune 2, behind Dune 7 was special and as promised one of the best 4x4 Vasbyt events. A total of twenty-five contestants entered: 20 Namibians and five South Africans. The entrants competed in four different classes with masses of people attending the event. Old favourites, the father and son Floris Steenkamp Snr. as the navigator and his son Floris Steenkamp Jnr. as the driver in their mean machine 'Bobjaan' obtained full points at seven of the ten stages. They gathered 520 points and ended the day not only as the winners of the A-Class category but also took the overall. Following not far behind the Steenkamps was also a father and son team, Nico Oberholzer Sr. and Nico Oberholzer Jr. with 480 points (A-Class). The winners: A-Class: 1. Floris Steenkamp Snr and Floris Steenkamp Jnr in 'Bobjaan' with 520 points. 2. Nico Oberholzer Jnr and Nico Oberholzer Snr in 'Goggo' with 480 points. 3.
