at the SME Bank Some media-houses have misrepresented some aspects of the comments made by President Geingob at his media conference of Monday 31 July 2017 with regards to recent developments at the SME Bank. Some reports hold, in part, that the President exonerated Honourable Frans Kapofi, Minister of Presidential Affairs and former Chairperson of the SME Bank and Dr George Simataa, the Secretary to Cabinet and most recent chairperson of the SME Bank from any responsibilities with regards to state of affairs at the bank. Such reports are false and do not reflect the true letter and spirit of statements the President made at the said media conference. The following are the facts: 1. President Geingob emphasized the fact that all Namibians are innocent until proven guilty in terms of our constitution. To that end, Honourable Kapofi and Dr. Simataa cannot be found guilty by media or any stakeholder group without a proper due process being followed in terms of the laws of the land and a guilty verdict reached. 2. The President accepted that the directors of the SME bank have fiduciary responsibility over the affairs of the bank and the laws of the land prescribe appropriate sanctions where a breach of the relevant laws is proven. The Bank of Namibia is in charge of the process going forward and can advise next steps in the event of any proven wrongdoings in terms of alleged Corporate Governance breaches just like they have done with regards to the core banking process breaches and the attempt at recovery of the funds invested outside Namibia. 3. The President further clarified that before the court cases the government had requested the Central Bank for more time to consult the political counterparts in both Zimbabwe and South Africa with an effort to retrieve the funds reported irretrievable but invested in those jurisdictions. The Bank of Namibia, however, proceeded to invoke the relevant provisions of the law to seek redresses in the courts as opposed to the political solution the President proposed. 4. The administration will not, under any circumstances, interfere with the judiciary processes of the country as the President respects the constitutional provisions of the separation of powers between the various branches of the State.

Four poachers arrested Sharlien Tjambari

Four suspected poachers were arrested by the Police at a roadblock near Swakopmund early yesterday morning. Four oryx car-casses, two springbok carcasses and a shotgun were confiscated. The animals were shot in the Namib Naukluft Park, according to a police spokesperson. The arrests were made at 00:30 on Monday, after a tip-off was received from the public. After receiving the information, police officials set up a road block and soon a Toyota pick-up with the registration mark N21313S was pulled over. "We found a shotgun and believe it was used to kill the game. The four suspects' age range was given as between 35 to 57. The accused will make a first appearance in the Swakopmund magistrate's court today. Their identities are known to the newspaper and will be published in Friday's edition.

Swakopmund turned 125 years old on Friday. The town's 125 anniversary celebrations commenced with an opening ceremony on Friday, 4 August at 10:30, at the Amphitheatre. The event was opened by Governor of Erongo, Clr Cleophas Mutjavikua who said the day was not only a birthday celebration, but a celebration of cultural diversity and remembering the history of Swakopmund. "We are celebrating transformation, from narrow salt roads to paved roads, from small mini-markets to world class shopping malls, from segregated townships to unified suburbs. Even in death (cemeteries) our people were separated. Today we cater for all our people. This is what we are celebrating today as a milestone" said Mutjavikua. Clr Mutjavikua added one cannot talk about the history of Swakopmund without mentioning the concentration camps where Namibians endured inhuman torturing and killings. "Today the Swakopmund memorial park is dotted with unmarked graves which signifies the fight against the colonialist and imperialist". The Governor also took a moment to reflect on the murder last Wednesday of an elderly lady, Rosvieta Strzelecki in her home in Vineta by intruders. Clr Mutjavikua said the news of the murder came

as a shock wave to the ears of Swakopmunders. He outright condemned the murder and also rejected all forms of criminality in the Erongo Region. The governor further said Erongo region is looking forward to growth in the tourism sector, of which Swakopmund most often is the focus point for tourists and visitors. At the opening on Friday there were food stalls, businesses stalls, arts & crafts stalls, a beverages tent, storytelling, traditional sports, musicians, jumping castles, and many more. There were also performances by an Oshiwambo group from Festus Gonteb, performances by a Baster group from Namib Primary school, a Damara group from Vrede Rede and also performances by a German group from Namib Primary school. The performances by these groups from the different schools signified the town's cultural diversity. The official event ended in a moment of silence when all residents rose and silently listened to church bells ringing across the town. Celebration ended on Saturday evening.

They are charged with murder and robbery. The three suspects are: Daniel Stephanus Nghilifa (26) who is believed to be the main suspect in the case and who was renovating the couple's house, Jerobeam Simon Shidute (23) the second main suspect in the case and their accomplice Fabianus Lazarus (24). The case was remanded to 26 September for bail applications and legal aid. The accused remain in custody. It is believed Nghilifa and Shidute entered the Strzelecki home last week on Wednesday morning around 08:00. They attacked the couple by assaulting them and tying them up. The death of Rosvieta Strzelecki was allegedly caused by injuries she sustained during the attack. She was allegedly strangled. The suspect presumably used a duplicate key to enter the house. They then entered the room where the Rosvieta Strzelecki was at the time and allegedly grabbed her by the throat and hit her head against a wall. The deceased's husband, Siegfried Strzelecki, was in another part of the house and was alerted by a noise. He went to investigate and encountered one of the attackers whom he immediately recognised as a person who conducted renovations at his house earlier. The second suspect wore a mask. After also attacking the elderly man, the accused took with them one Huawei cellphone valued at N$8 000, the remote control of the house's alarm system, a pair of sandals of the deceased and cash of N$1 000. Mr Strzelecki managed to free himself after the suspects left the house and he alerted a neighbour. The police arrived within minutes. Mrs Strzelecki was pronounced dead and Mr Strzelecki was admitted at Cottage Hospital where he is recovering. The accused were caught with a few hours after a brief manhunt by the Swakopmund police.

Armed suspects rob service station Piquet Jacobs

Six armed robbers targeted the Total fuel service station in Narraville late on Sunday. A case of armed robbery has been opened. The suspects fled with N$54 000 in cash and various other items, including a computer box which records the premises' close circuit television system. The police said: "It is alleged that between 21:30 and 22:30 on Sunday evening six masked suspects entered the Total shop, five armed with pistols and one with a knife. The suspects held the workers at gunpoint and demanded money.

The suspects left the scene with N$54 000 removed from the safe, the CCTV camera box and remote controls, a Toshiba laptop and a bundle of keys. A white Toyota Corolla was seen in the area during the robbery, but no further details could be obtained and is not clear if it was the get-away car. No arrests have been made in connection with the incident yet. NamPol request assistance from the public, asking anyone with information to contact Detective Inspector Ashikoto at 081 255 4504".

One suspect in Husab robbery case arrested Sharlien Tjambari

A former employee at Swakop Uranium's Husab Mine, Lukas Tuyoleni Ndjukuma (29), was arrested as the main suspect in an armed robbery at the Mine on 2 August this year. Ndjukuma was arrested at Oshikango after an arrest warrant was issued in the Ohangwena Region. A second suspect is still on the run. Ndjukuma and his accomplice allegedly entered the mine's premises through the main gate in a Volkswagen Polo with registration number: N7804S. They proceeded to block 16 (room no.7), where the paymaster's living quarter is. They forced the door open and overpowered their victim, 27-year old Liu Yiyu, who was asleep at the time.

The suspects allegedly threatened the victim with knives, tied him up and stole a laptop, two mobile phones, three watches, an external computer hard drive and N$12 000 in cash. The total value of the stolen goods was estimated at N$69 000. Ndjukuma appeared in a magistrate's court in Ohangwena and the matter was transferred to Swakopmund magistrates court. He was denied bail and is transferred under police guard to Swakopmund.

Long beach accident victims escape with slight injuries On Saturday at around 23:15, a Polo Vivo collided head-on with a Jeep on the B2 coastal road in the vicinity of Long Beach. The occupants of both vehicles escaped with their lives, but drunken driving is believed to be the cause of the accident. It is alleged that the driver the Polo Vivo, Tari Van der Merwe (23), was driving from Swakopmund to Walvis Bay. She was the sole occupant of the vehicle. The Jeep, which was travelling from Walvis Bay towards Swakopmund was carrying three occupants including the driver, Mr Hannes Uys (43). According to NamPol's spokesperson for Erongo Uys was allegedly under the influence of alcohol. Uys was admitted to the Welwitschia Private Hos-pital under Police guard. Van der Merwe too was admitted, albeit with minor injuries. The Jeep's passengers, Shahieda Stumpfe (32)

and Jolandi Strauss (27) also sustained moderate injuries and were admitted to the Welwitchia Hospital. A case of drunken driving and reckless and or negligent driving was opened at NamPol in Walvis Bay. In another incident, on Sunday morning, between Swakopmund and Arandis on the B2 a Mercedes Benz hit another vehicle from the rear. The vehicle was towed by another vehicle and the driver of the Mercedes did not see the vehicle in time to apply brakes. The nature of the injuries sustained by the occupants of the vehicles were described as non-life-threatening.

The matter was postponed to 12 September for further investigation. The accused is on bail of N$2 000. Khaibasen Nauseb (26) appeared on charges of negligent driving and failing to ascertain injuries sustained. The accused was found guilty and sentenced to pay a fine of N$1 000 and 12-months imprisonment term. Manu Van Wyk (28) appeared on a charge of assault by threat. The matter was postponed to 6 September for further investigation. The accused is on bail of N$2 000. Theresia Petrus (20) appeared on a charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. The matter was postponed to 20 November for plea and trial. The accused remains in custody. Simson Eliakim (27) appeared on a charge of driving with an excessive breath alcohol level. The matter was postponed to 24 August because the accused was absent. The accused is on extended bail of N$4 000 and a warrant of arrest was issued. Martha Nangombe (28) appeared on charges of culpable homicide read with provisions of the domestic violence act, act 3 of 2003 and treatment or neglect of children. The matter was postponed to 18 September for further investigation. The accused remains in custody. Israel Gideon (32) appeared on a charge of theft from a motor vehicle. The Präsident, Jörn Wormsbächer held an Opening speech and welcomed the audience. The Royal couple of 2016, Prinz Konrad I. Der Bierlover and his lovely Prinzess Anja I. Vom Paukeramt, was called in first to give their farewell speech. With the last Order of their Reign the Princess ordered the Elferrat on Stage to perform the welknown Waka Dance , the so called “Pirate dance”. The new Royal Couple was announced and revealed after everybody was wondering who it might be. They were introduced as Prinz Jaco I Der Eiskalte Hecht and Prinzessin Tammy I Die Dauerstudentin, who then took over the royal proceedings and gave their Reign Speech. The Royal Couple symbolically received the town's key from Mr Tobias Nambala, Chairperson of the Management Committee of the City of Walvis Bay for the duration of the carnival. The Funkenpaar, Ruzanne Snymann and Wim Grootjans performed a dance which steamed up the ASC Hall even more. Chef vom Protocol, Gerd Coeln, took the Audience through Heights and Depth of the Happenings in our Country and especially Walvis Bay under the motto “Wir

stellen alles auf'n Kopp”, which means “We turn everything upside down.” The Garde Girls were performing their dance and different other dances and speeches took place during the evening. The highlight was the pole dancers. (The Garde dance was performed by: Stephanie Dreyer (Tambour), Ruzanne Snymann, Anita Pagel, Hanri Keet, Jessica Derks and Stephanie Boon.) There was really something for everybody's taste. During break dinner was served which was included in the ticket price. Boat restaurant hit by tragedy

The family and workers of Walvis Bay's first floating restaurant was hit by tragedy on Friday when the owner, Mr Andreas Munkelwitz, was found dead at his home in the harbour town's Theo-Ben Gurirab Street. Mr Munkelwitz committed suicide. His wife Cynthia, after whom the floating restaurant was named, found him dead in the couple's main bedroom. Munkelwitz made a valuable contribution to Namibia's restaurant and hospitality industry and was also an avid businessman with an appetite to always try something new.

The reputation of law enforcement in Swakopmund has been dealt a blow over the weekend, after members of the town's community policing, security officials and members of the Namibian Police assaulted a young man at a local night club. As a result of the assault the man suffered a torn retina to one of his eyes. His friend was also assaulted, including a blow to the side of his head by a fist and that whilst he was already hand-cuffed. The incident occurred at around 03:00 on Sunday at the Vintage night club. Some fifteen people were still at the establishment, although the music was already turned off and no alcohol sold, as it was already past the curfew allowed by the club's liquor license. Rössing Uranium supports Namibian World Athletics Championship participants All five Namibian athletes who participated at the IAAF World Championships over the weekend are previous winners at the Rössing Marathon National Championship. Paulus Iiyambo and Helalia Johannes (2017 - marathon), Lavinia Haitope (2017 - 10 km Run), Reonard Namupala (2016 - marathon) and Beata Naigambo (2016 – 10 km Run) have all been recent champions. Even the athletes coach, Robert Kaxuxuena, has previously won the Rössing Marathon (in 2003). As part of Rio Tinto Rössing Uranium Mine's efforts to pro-actively promote healthy, safe and environmentally-responsible lifestyles among our stakeholders, the Rössing Marathon Development Bonus, worth N$40 000, was handed over to the two current Rössing Marathon national champions, Paulus and Helalia, in Windhoek. The bonus was first introduced in 2011, with an amount of N$280 000, over and above the competition prizemonies, that have already been contributed toward the career development of long-distance athletes in Namibia since then. During the handover event before the athletes departed for the IAAF World Championships in London, Rössing Company Secretary, Glynis Labuschagne, congratulated Paulus and Helalia and wished them good luck for the rest of the year. She said: "Funding through the bonus is meant to support the careers of the two Rössing Marathon winners during the year of their reign as Namibia's national champions. This is support provided over and above the cash prizes of the marathon championship, to help develop Namibian sport talent and assist in their preparations for competitions elsewhere. We hope that this will give our champions a good platform from which to launch successful participation in future events. We'll eagerly follow their perfor’-mances throughout the rest of the year." Both runners did well in London this past weekend, where Helalia finished in 19th place overall in the women's event and Paulus in 37th place for the men. Paulus and Helalia expressed their gratitude for the support from the mine. Paulus said: "One of the benefits of the

development bonus is that it puts us in a position to acquire special exercise and compe-tition gear. Some clothing and gear is scientifically made to add support and make exercise and competition more comfortable. For example - running tights and vests that allow your body to stay cool while you run; special sport bra's for the ladies; and sports watches that help track your heart rate. Back in London during the marathon over the weekend, Reonard Namupala finished in the 35th position for Namibia, while Beata Naigambo and Lavinia Haitope finished in the 30th and 50th places respectively in the women's division. Spur Social Cricket League finals on Saturday Twelve teams entered for the 2017 the Spur Social Cricket League. The league has been running since April this year and came to an end on Saturday. The league was divided in groups A and B. The semi-finals were played on Sunday and saw the winner of group A playing the runner-up of group B. Equally, the winner of group B played the runner-up of group A. The first semi-final of the Spur Social Cricket League group A winner, Koh-E-Noor played against group B runner-up FPRW. The match was very tense, as FPRW went in to bat first and were bowled out with just 143 runs on the board. Wimpie Martins (FPRW) was selected man of the match for his brilliant performance: he hit five sixes and one four for a total of 54 runs with 30 balls not out. Koh-E-Noor could only manage to get 108 runs on the board. FPRW won the match with 35 runs, to book their place in the final. The second semi-final saw PPS Knights group B winners playing against Spur, the runner-up of group A.

Shalako Groenewald got five wickets with just 47 balls and was selected as man of the match. Spur was all bowled out for 123 runs. The opening batsmen of PPS Knights, Shalako Groenewald, scored 12 runs from 15 balls and Gerhard Lottering 37 runs from 33 balls. Together they scored 49 runs. The two youngsters Mathew de Goveia and Hudley Julie scored all 48 runs PPS Knights needed to win the match with eight wickets. The plate final will take place on Saturday at 9:00 between Koh-E-Noor and Spur. FPRW and PPS Knights will play the final at 13:00. Both games will be at the Walvis Bay cricket oval. The prize giving will be after the final.

The Rock Spitzkoppe Community Run and Mountain Bike Challenge 2017 The Rock Spitzkoppe Community Run and Mountain Bike Challenge 2017, a highlight for runners, walkers and mountain-bikers all over Namibia, will take place on Saturday, 9th September for the 9th consecutive year. An estimated 450 entries are expected and to date more than 250 athletes have entered the event already. The Rock is a very unique event, as it takes place within the domain and with the blessing and support of the local Spitzkoppe community, represented by the ≠Gaingu Conservancy and the! Oe-≠Gan Traditional Authority. In contrast to many other sporting events of this nature, the focus is not on profit, but on sustainable development for the local community through sport. 10 th Edition of the annual Metropolitan Swabou 2017 Summer Cup finals to be Contributed held in Swakopmund For the first time after 9 years, the finals of the 10th Edition of the Metropolitan Swath th bou Summer Cup will be hosted in Swakopmund on the 15 & 16 of September 2017. This was said at the Handover Ceremony that was held, in the Kavango East Region, Rundu at the Ngandu Safari Lodge. Having reached a milestone of 10 years, Metropolitan Swabou has over the years partnered with the Ministry of Sports, Youth and National Service to give back to the future generation through sports and recreation. Metropolitan Swabou has set aside N$ 450 000 towards the hosting and organizing of the tournament, while winning teams in the first, second, third and fourth positions are expected to receive prize money valued at N$ 15 000 and N$ 4 000 respectively. The Kavango East region was selected as an additional region to partake in the tournament

Deputy Minister Applauds Debmarine Namibia for Heeding Government’s Cry Contributed Honourable Agnes Tjongarero, Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports & National Service said that it was her singular honour to, on behalf of the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Services, deliver this keynote address at this Sponsorship Signing Agreement between Debmarine Namibia and Netball Namibia, which indeed is an auspicious event. Honourable Agnes Tjongarero said; "I sincerely wish to thank Debmarine Namibia for rescuing netball in Namibia, who in the past few years have taken a down-turn, losing its ranking and underperforming at International games, like any other sport code, Netball has really been hit hard by financial difficulties. With over 54 different sport codes, which Government alone will not be able to sustain and or cater for all sport codes, thus the continuous call upon corporate companies for assistance". Deputy Minister further mentioned that she believe this is just what the netball fraternity needed, a sponsor that will inject funds at the heart of the associations biggest challenges. Activities in the regions have been very limited with some regions not even showing up for trials due to financial difficulties and that the National team is not as representative as it should be as the National body cannot afford to bring in players from the regions to parttake. The Deputy Minister said that the Development of netball has largely been growing in Central Namibia, while far north regions and regions like Kunene where we have good athletes fit for this sport especially have been neglected, and that she is very happy to hear that Netball Namibia will ensure that all regions will be equal beneficiaries of this sponsorship, thus also developing grass root level netball in Namibia. Deputy Minister believes that through this sponsorship, Debmarine Namibia has not only give funds, but has acknowledged that Sport in Namibia needs the corporate world. She said that they have acknowledged the dire strait of Netball in Namibia and have acknowledged the importance of developing the most elite female sport in this country. of women, by empowering the girl- child as leaders of this country and that Netball has the ability to instil discipline in a girl, refocus a girl- prevent teenage pregnancies and allow the girl to prosper and there are many opportunities for the girl-child, by just being involved with Netball, therefore it is important that we invest in this sport. Deputy Minister said to the Board of Netball Namibia, "you are fortunate to receive this sponsorship, amongst pleading others, thus I believe you will set-up good governance structures to ensure this sponsorship continues and that you will make a success on all the set objectives. Erongo Regional Netball Team Second in National Netball Championships The Erongo Region Netball team come second in the inaugural Debmarine Senior National Netball Championships after losing in the final against Khomas Region 41-29 on Saturday evening in Windhoek. Only ten of the 14 regions in the country made it to Windhoek for the National Championships. Netball Namibia PRO Rebekka Goagoses said:"the match had been eagerly awaited after Khomas Region managed to beat Erongo 17-16 in their league encounter on Friday evening. That match, however was only played over two halves totalling 30 minutes. The final consisted of four quarters totalling 60 minutes, and Khomas' experience eventually paid off in the final. Khomas received the winner's cheque of N$30 000, a floating trophy and gold medals. Erongo received N$15 000 and silver medals. Omaheke Region was third received N$9 000 and bronze medals.
