Help find this missing girl Eileen van der Schyff 14-year-old Blessing Hanganda (pictured) went missing on Saturday 29 February. She was last seen leaving her home in Narraville at Walvis Bay. Hanganda has not returned home since then. Search efforts thus far by the police and her parents proved unsuccessful. The Namibian Police in Erongo is not ruling out the possibility that the same gang of armed robbers might be behind an armed robbery at Omaruru on Sunday morning and a farm attack a day later south of the town in which a female victim was shot in the face and leg (see report of fuel service station armed robbery on page 4). Two men with their faces covered attacked a 48 year old woman on the farm Kanona at around 21:00. They grabbed her, but she managed to free her. She ran to her vehicle and drove off at high speed. Unbeknown to her a third suspect lay in wait and as she sped off he shot at the vehicle, with a bullet hitting her in the face and in her right leg. The suspects then entered the house and took with them a laptop and a telescope. “It is believed that they were a getaway vehicle waiting for them on the main road nearby.� The armed robber of both incidents (if not the same gang) is still at large.

Eileen van der Schyff Hangana Seafood Processors consulted the world-renowned salvage master Captain Nick Sloane to ascertain whether there were any chances to reach the wreck of its sunken fishing trawler, Resplendent. Resplendent went down with its skipper Carlo Gordon on 18 February this year in a water depth of 318 metres. On expert advice from Sloane, an aerial search for the missing captain was the next best practical solution to try and find the missing skipper.

Captain Sloane, which is the owner of Resolve Marine Group based in Fort Lauderdale in Florida (USA) was the mastermind behind the recovery of the passenger ship Costa Concordia which ran aground and topped over off the Italian coast in the Mediterranean Sea in 2012. On the advice of Captain Sloane the services of Bay Air Aviation were procured to conduct an aerial search in the area where the sinking

occurred, in the hopes to recover the missing skipper Gordon. In later days the family of the missing Skipper Gordon were flown to the area where a moment of silence was observed where the ship went down and flowers scattered on the water in his memory. Famed writer Fanie Viljoen visits the coast Sharlien Tjambari During his visit to Namibia this week, the well-known Afrikaans South African author Fanie Viljoen, visited two coastal schools to talk about his books, the importance of reading and writing essays. Viljoen resides in Bloemfontein in South Africa and spreads his passion for the language, for writing and for reading to every possible corner where he can reach the hearts and minds of children. The fulltime writer, illustrator and artist, has written numerous short stories, radio plays and books for children and teenagers. Several of these books have won awards for children and youth literature in South Africa. Viljoen visited the Walvis Bay Private High School (Primary phase), ProEd Akademie and Die Muschel Book & Art Shop in Swakopmund on Tuesday of this week. Viljoen summed up his visit to the two coastal schools as amazing. The children were eager to read. “We are going around to different schools, telling pupils about books and Viljoen with learners of the Walvis Bay Primary School how to write essays. One thing about kids is that you have to let them know what is available and then get them interested in reading”, says Viljoen. Barbara Ferger of Die Muschel Book &Art Shop said she loved the way Viljoen interacted with the kids during his two-hour visit at the book shop. She was left very impressed with him. “The presentation was excellent. He writes stories which are youth-orientated. He writes for both boys and girls and I was simply very impressed”, said Ferger. Accompanying the flight was among others the managing director of Hangana Seafood Processors Mr Herman Theron, Miss Tari van der Merwe of Walvis Bay Diving and Mr Graham Ridell of from Resolve Marine Group. Then a few days later a flight followed to bring the loved ones of Gordon to the exact spot on the ocean where Resplendent descended to its watery grave on 18 February. New church to be inaugurated Rudi Bowe

The newly-constructed church building of the The Restoration Centre will be inaugurated on Sunday. The Restoration Centre is a Christian church which was founded in March 2010. It was housed at the Youth Planet Centre in Narraville originally and takes pride in the new church building, situated in Narraville’s Raja Street. The Restoration Centre’s mission is to “Win, Build and Send”. From humble beginnings in 2010 consisting of eight families, the church under the leadership of Pastor Randal Jacobs and his spouse Paula, the church has grown to a congregation of 220 people. “The hope of the world does not rest on our shoulders, but the hope of someone else does. Especially those who do not know Jesus Christ or those whose relationship with God is not on track. For that reason The Restoration Centre wants to be a church that welcomes the disconnected and grow a relationship with God”, explains Pastor Jacobs. With donations from companies and an astronomic commitment from congregation members, the church building is finally completed. Construction started in 2016. The building has been completed without a cent’s borrowing from a financial institution, it was further explained. Pastor Jacobs admitted though there were original plans to borrow money to construct the church, but no bank wanted to extend them credit. Disappointment was overturned into positive energy and so it came that the church was built on donations and personal commitments by congregation members. “This could only be done by the grace of God. Also bear in mind we never had a single fundraising event, yet our project went from strength to strength”. “The guest of honour at the inauguration is the Governor of Erongo Region, Clr. Cleophas Mutjavikua, the mayor of Walvis Bay Alderman Immanuel Wilfried and other high profile guests. The Restoration Centre is a church that's passionate about the spiritual, emotional, physical, economical, and mental well-being of the community. The inauguration ceremony will start tonight, Friday 6 March at 19:00 with a Praise and Worship evening and the inauguration service will be on Sunday, 8 March at 09:00. Mayor Immanuel Wilfried pays tribute to hero skipper Gordon The Mayor of Walvis Bay, Alderman Immanuel Wilfred paid tribute to Captain Carlo Gordon during the monthly council meeting on Tuesday night, hailing him as a hero who not only saved his crew, but in the process paid the ultimate price. The Mayor is quoted: “It is not often that we witness or hear about acts of true bravery. Heroes are normally confined to movies or history books. Just over two week ago an act of true heroism took place when the fishing trawler, the Resplendent, sunk off our coast. Everyone but the captain, Carlo Gordon of Walvis Bay could be brought to safety. Although Mr Gordon has not been found yet we are all hopeful of the best possible outcome for all his family and friends. Mr Gordon displayed true bravery when he made sure that all his crew members were safe by choosing to be the last one on the ship. He thus followed the principles of the safety of others on board before his own. We salute him and pray for the wellbeing of the family and for them to find closure to this tragedy”.

Hangana Seafood Processors this week provided a full account of the last day and hours of the hake trawler Resplendent which sank on 18 February on the fishing grounds northwest of Walvis Bay. The skipper of the vessel, Mr. Carlo Gordon is the only person of the crew of 27 which could not be saved. He remains missing. Gordon has been hailed in recent days for his exemplary action to ensure the evacuation from the sinking vessel was conducted orderly and safely. Gordon reported went back several times to check and re-check that no one was left on the ship. It is feared he lost his life in the process and went down with his ship. In a statement Hangana Seafood this week provided the following information that casts light on the final hours of Resplendent, the sinking and the aftermath. · The MFV Resplendent sailed from Walvis Bay on 17February 2020 at 19:00, with 27 crew members onboard and skippered by Captain Carlo Gordon. · The vessel reached the fishing grounds at 07:00 on 18 February 2020 and commenced trawling. · At 12:30 on 18 February 2020, the Captain received reports from the crew of sudden flooding of seawater into the vessel. The Captain took emergency measures at once. All fishing was stopped. · At about 12:45 on 18 February 2020, Captain Carlo Gordon radioed Captain Jerome van Wyk of the MFV Fisher Bank for assistance. · At 13:00 on 18 February 2020, the Resplendent sent out a distress call and the Captain gave instructions to the crew to take emergency measures to abandon the vessel. The crew deployed the life rafts and put on life jackets. · The MFV Fisher Bank was the first responder on the scene and started rescuing the crew at once. The second responder, MFV Victory from Seaworks, became involved in the rescue and lifted 17 crew members from the water. · Following a head count by the captains of the rescue vessels (Captain Jerome van Wyk of the MFV Fisher Bank and Captain Hanavi of MFV Victory), a total of 26 crew members were confirmed as rescued, leaving Captain Carlo Gordon as reported missing. Both vessels started an immediate search for the Captain. · A number of other vessels arrived on the scene to take part in the search They were: Victory from Seaworks; Equinos from Cadilu; Wiron V Itingwege from Pereira; Muxia from Merlus; MFV Begonia from Hangana as well as the patrol vessel Anna. · After a procedural 24-hour search, with no success, the search was officially called off. Hangana Seafood, however, continued to keep the MFV Begonia engaged in the search. · On 19 February 2020 at 06:30, the rescued crew members arrived back at shore at Hangana jetty and, where needed, received medical attention at once. · Hangana Seafood continued to explore private search and rescue efforts and, to that end, made immediate contact with a leading international salvage company, Resolve Marine Group, and consulted Captain Nick Sloane. · Resolve is headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA, and has been actively involved in global salvage and wreck removal for the last 30 years. Captain Sloane is the Vice President of ISU (International Salvage Union) and led the highly publicized and largest ever wreck removal operation of the passenger liner, Costa Concordia, which sunk after striking a rock off the coast of Italy in 2012. · After meeting with Resolve Marine Group on 20 February 2020, it was determined that the most effective search operation would be an aerial survey, based on factors such as speed, visibility, distance covered, the depth of the sunken vessel as well as the wind and sea currents. · On Friday, 21 February 2020, Hangana Seafood commenced a two-day aerial search for the missing Captain over an extensive area of sea and seashore. The team comprised Hangana Managing Director, Herman Theron; Tari van der Merwe of Walvis Bay Diving; Graham Riddell from Resolve Marine Group as well as two pilots. Unfortunately, the team found no trace of the Captain and no debris from the vessel.

A 32-year-old man faces charges of Attempted rape alternatively Indecent Assault read with the Domestic Violence Act, after he attempted to rape his 14-year-old stepdaughter while the girl's mother was out of town. The incident happened on Tuesday this week in the Omdel Locaion at Henties Bay. The suspect was arrested and will appear in the Swakopmund Magistrate court today.

Armed Robbery at Omaruru Eileen van der Schyff Service Station Three unknown men masked with balaclavas held the cashier and the security guard of the Omaruru Shell Service Station at gunpoint and demanded money early Sunday morning . The three masked men entered the shop and held the two employees at gunpoint and took money to the amount of N$25 000. The trio quickly vanished with a silver colored getaway car which was parked outside. No one was injured and investigations continue. Anyone with information or knows about the whereabouts of the suspects is requested to contact Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu or Detective Warrant Officer Ndeshi Tiofelus at 081 327 2505 or go to the nearest police station.

A suspect is on the run after he unlawfully and intentionally drove off in a vehicle from where it was parked without the owner's consent on Sunday, 1 March. The incident took place at around 02:00 at Dream Lounge parking area in Arandis. The vehicle is a white Toyota Corolla with registration no. N 196398 W, valued at N$55 000. According to police reports, the vehicle belongs to Romanus Kalimba a Namibian citizen working at the Rössing Uranium Mine. No recovery has been made and investigations continue.

Beach Clean-up – 30 bags collected

Langstrand Residents, old and young alike took part in the beach clean-up on Saturday, 29 February. The cleanup started at the tidal pools near Dolphin Beach and ended at Erik's Cove where the residents were treated with a braai for all their hard work. Residents from the age of 7 to 70-years-old took part in the clean-up. Langstrand Neighbourhood watch (LNW) would like to thank the committee, patrollers, Steckel's Toyota (Freddie Mills) Opposite Lock (Werner and Rika Schaap) for their contribution towards the clean-up.

Thirty bags of rubbish were collected, and ten rubbish bins were cleaned out. Six new additional rubbish bins were erected on this stretch of beach. The next clean-up will be in the dune belt opposite Langstrand after the Easter weekend and then another beach clean-up in October.

Have-a-Heart in conjunction with the Mobile Animal Clinic – Eileen van der Schyff Another weekend of success Mobile Animal Clinic in conjunction with the animal welfare group, Have-a-Heart, sterilised and treated 52 animals in Walvis Bay this past weekend. Even though the organization has a shortage of funds, the clinic could not let the opportunity pass because of the immense need of sterilisation of cats and dogs in the low-income community in Walvis Bay. The sterilisation of 52 cats and dogs mean that thousands of lives have been saved. One female cat and one female dog can have close to 20 kittens or puppies every year and these cats and dogs then have babies when they are less than six months old. Dr Baines and his team also vaccinated cats and dogs for rabies and administered tick and flea treatments and helped one dog with removal of a broken tooth. Have-a-Heart saves lives through sterilisation through providing free spay/neuter, vaccination and parasite control of cats and dogs of people

with low to no income (less than N$ 2000 per month). Have-a-Heart also sterilises feral cats (cats without a home and who avoids humans). By reducing the number of unwanted animals, suffering of animals are reduced, we see an improvement of their health and elimination of the need for masseuthanasia. Have-a-Heart is a registered non-profit organisation (NPO) that depends on donations from the public. Have-a-Heart will be very grateful to the public for covering the cost for the spay days. To help the less fortunate, Mobile Clinic provide its services at an incredibly low rate, but still must cover the expenses for medical materials for medical.

Dieses ist das Vorwort aus Fritz Gaerdes Buch “Tiere im Veld”, das er 1965 in Okahandja schrieb. Es wird in zwei Folgen gebracht: Im unermesslichen Weltall, zwischen unzähligen Sternen, glühenden Gasbällen und erloschenen Sonnen, schwebt als winziges Stäubchen die Erde, unsere Heimat. Jahrmillionen dauerte es, bis sich darauf das vielfältige Leben der Tierund Pflanzenwelt entwickelte, das uns heute umgibt. Als letztes folgte das Geschöpf Mensch. Ihm allein ist die Gabe verliehen, die Entwicklung zu erkennen, forschend und experimentierend in das Geschehen einzugreifen, die Umwelt zu verändern und die Landschaft und ihre Geschöpfe seinen Zwecken dienstbar zu machen. Seine Pflanzen und Tiere, die er sich zu seinem Nutzen und Gebrauch züchtete, nehmen immer größere Teile der Erdoberfläche ein und verdrängen die ursprüngliche Landschaft und ihre Geschöpfe. Die Erde betrachtet er als sein Eigentum, mit dem er schalten kann, wie er will. Was nicht seinen Zwecken dient, muss weichen. Nicht immer ist es eine Lebensnotwendigkeit, die sein Handeln bestimmt. Oft lockt nur vorübergehender Gewinn, der in der Zukunft teuer bezahlt werden muss. Zu leicht vergisst der

Fritz Gaerdes (geboren 1892 bei Bremen verstorben 1975 in Okahandja an den Folgen eines Schlaganfalls) war ein deutscher Lehrer, Autor naturkundlicher Bücher und Förderer des Denkmal- und Naturschutzes in Südwestafrika. Im Jahr 1921 besuchte der Grundschullehrer seinen älteren Bruder Jan Gaerdes in Südwestafrika, wo dieser bereits seit 1913 lebte. Kwetu-Preisausschreiben für unsere Leser! Swakopmund (sk) Fährt man von der Küste aus nach Wilhelmstal, sieht man auf der rechten Seite Bäume hoch in den Himmel hinaufragen. Erst seit einigen Monaten zeigt sich auch ein prominentes Schild dort: “Kwetu Shop and Coffee Stop”. Inge Geldenhuys brauchte nach dem Tod ihre Mannes Frans Barnett, dessen Asche unter einem uralten Hirtenbaum in ihrem Garten verstreut ruht, eine neue Lebensaufgabe - und voila: Kwetu war geboren! Als Inge Seichter auf eine Farmverkaufsanzeige hin 1994 nach Namibia auswanderte, saß sie plötzlich mit 600 Karakulschafen und 80 Rindern auf der Farm Ottilienhof, die Teil der ehemaligen größeren Farm Kaltenhausen in der Nähe von Otjimbingwe ausmachte. Coastal Squash players second Rudi Bowe

Coastal Squash players Danie Greeff and Chantel De Gouveia ended second at the this season's first Namibia Squash Association (NSA) Top 16 Men's and ladies squash tournament on 28-29 February 2020 at the Wanderers Squash Club in Windhoek.

The coastal players that participated in the NSA top 16 squash tournament were; Men's: Angelo Titus, Danie Greeff, Emil Dorgeloh, Brandon Grane and Imanuel Amorongo and the ladies were Chantel de Gouveia, Andrea Louw, Carla Venter and Kirsten Wolhuter. The weekend was an exhibition of awe-inspiring squash skills with a couple of major upsets. The first ranked men's player, Max Endjala, was defeated in a closely contested semi-final by Danie Greeff (2-3) while the first ranked ladies player, Delia van Zyl, was also defeated in the semi-final by Judith Savage (0-3). Judith Savage secured the tournament title in the ladies final when she defeated Chantel De Gouveia 3-0. Andrew Fourie lifted the coveted Top 16 title

after defeating Danie Greeff 3-1 in a major upset. The men's third-place play-off was won by Max Endjala as he defeated Emile Dorgeloh 3-0 whiles the ladies third-place play off was won by Delia van Zyl as she defeated Adri Lambert 3-0. The Chairman of the NSA, Rudi Koekemoer, confirmed that there will be two more Top 16 tournaments in 2020, while this tournament sets the tone for the Namibian Nationals that will take place over the weekend of 5-7 June 2020 at the SFC Squash Club in Swakopmund. Koekemoer thanked all participants for the good spirit in which matches were contested and encouraged players to continue competing for inclusion in the Namibian team to participate at the IPT Kaplan and Jarvis Squash Tournament in South Africa later in the year.

Kudus Rugby day Rudi Bowe

Kudus Rugby Club will have a rugby day this Saturday 7 March at Jan Wilken Stadium in Walvis Bay. The participating teams together with the host team, Kudus with two teams, Vikings, Dolphin, Sparta all from the coast, Grootfontein, from the north, Reho Falcon, from Rehoboth and UNAM from Windhoek. Two ladies' teams, Blue Roses from Walvis Bay and Okahandja Huskeys will also participate at the day. The first game will be between Reho Falcon and Sparta will be at 09:00 with the last round robin game at 16:20. The final will be at 20:20. The lady's teams will play two games with the first game at 17:00 and the second at 19:00. The entrance fees for the day are N$20 for adults, N$10 for school kids and N$20 per vehicle with a beer tent for all your refreshments.

About 68 under nine and under twelve boys took part in the Lagoon Park Summer Groove Soccer Tournament hosted by PlayTime Namibia in Walvis Bay. The under nines played a 4-a-side with 32 players that were divided in two groups with four teams in each group. The four under 9 teams that played the semi-final were Benfica, Liverpool, Juventus and Chelsea. The final was won by Benfica. They were the winners of the under nines final as they beat Juventus 3-1. The Under 12 played a 5-a- side with 36 players that were divided in two groups with 3 teams in a group with the following teams; Juventus, Manchester City, West Ham, Manchester United, Liverpool and Benfica. At the end of the day, Liverpool was crowned as the winners of the under 12 division after beating Benfica 3-1 on penalties after the score was 1-1 after full time. Izikiel Negongo was the top goal keeper and Stefanus Mtembi the top goal scorer in the under 9 division with Elias Mwenyo the top goal keeper and David Thomas the top goal scorer in the under 12 division. All the players received certificates and medals, (gold, silver and bronze). The names of the teams, we give ownership for children to come with their team's names. The tournament was extremely successful and well organised. Head Coach and Instructor at Playtime Namibia Osvaldo Dos Santos thanked Mr Tony Mansinho of Tayo Namibia for all the training equipments sponsored to PlayTime Namibia and the Honorable President of Atlantis Sports Club Mr Dieter Steinmetz and Hydro Weld for his constant support to Playtime Namibia as well as all the parents, spectators, playtime management, coaches and all other sponsors for making the first Lagoon Park Summer Groove Soccer Tournament a success.

Dos Santos also thanked Bali Koci, Hendrik Kaboy, Toby Musgrave, Edger "Messi" Clark and Gereth Amos for a job well done. The parents and Spectators attended in great numbers and the kids displayed spectacular games for their parents and great numbers of spectators that were in attended the event.

Rivalry continues Rudi Bowe

The rivalry between Walvis Bay Tennis Club (WBTC) and Swakopmund Tennis recently continued at the Tennis Courts in Walvis Bay. The players of the harbour town was once again too strong for their coastal rivals Swakopmund as they beat them 9-7 in an OTB sponsored tournament. The first encounter between the two clubs was won by Walvis Bay with the 8-0 score. The Walvis Bay players were Gert Olivier, Derrick Rosa, Paul Fisher, Anthony Block, Caden Block, Eugene Crüys, Ivan Singarem, Rojo Van Wyk and guest player Sam Kaulinge who is the President of the Namibian Tennis Association (NTA). Mr Kaulinge told the Namib Times that he is happy to see that the clubs at the coast organise tournaments like this to keep them fit and ready and promote the game of tennis in the region. He would like all other regions in the country to do the same as it will help with the development of tennis in the country. “Tennis in Namibia is growing and more young players start playing the game as we all know that the Region 5 junior Tennis championships just ended in Windhoek where our youngsters did very well” Kaulinge said. Kaulinge added that the NTA would like to enter more young players in international tournaments and that the NTA would like to host a few international tournaments. Kaulinge said “I would like to see more people especially youngsters participate and join Tennis Academies that are established. The next tournament between the two coastal towns is scheduled for November.

Atlantic Villas Golf day Contributed Rossmund Golf Club, in very hot and humid weather, had the Atlantic Villas Golf day on Wednesday, 26 February. This time around the "Kinder Garten" was in full swing and took the top honours. 18 Hole Winners - Michael Ludeke 41 points (and only last week he wanted to sell his clubs) after much to do about nothing (I selected what I thought was a score only to learn it was a Betterball score). Sorry for that folks. The 2nd prize was finally awarded to Franz Blaauw on a count-out with 35 points. Cashbox van Wyk was the 9 Hole winner with 20 points over the back 9 - we will forget what he played on the front. Thanks Gerhard for always being there when needed. Rossmund Golf Club appreciates your ongoing support to the club. The Novanam Monthly Medal on Saturday 29 February was time to play some real golf with a good field of 40 golfers, despite the hot and humid conditions. We had 52-clubs coming from Neels Jafta, Warren Theron, Desmond Frankfort, Bertie Saunderson and Chris Wood. Scores were close leaving the duty member Achmet Abrahams with lots of count outs.
