Hands off our tourists Police confirms Elna-Marie inside Isaac Chikosi Abbott committed suicide Golden A man who broke into the vehicle of tourists in Swakopmund on Floris Steenkamp Saturday has been dealt swift justice and is now serving a year Jubilee The Namibian Police confirmed earlier this week that its criminal prison sentence. His co-accused maintains his innocence and will be going on trial on 20 May this year. The arrest and sentencing is a clear message to any criminal that Namibians are tired of crime and that includes crime targeting our country's tourists whom are one of our biggest sources of income, job creation and downstream investment. According to Deputy Commissioner Erastus Ikuyu, Nampol Erongo's Criminal Investigations Coordinator, two suspects broke into the vehicle and stole a black leather bag, pullover, jacket, t-shirts and 4 pairs of socks. The total value of the stolen items is N$3 410. Two persons were arrested: Timoteus Iipinge (44) and Johannes Hamunyela (38). At their first appearance in the Swakopmund magistrate's court, Iipinge was found guilty and sent straight to jail. Hamunyela wants to prove his innocence. He has been released on N$1 000 bail and returns to court for trial purposes on 20 May.

investigation into the death of former Walvis Bay resident ElnaMarie Abbott concluded suicide. Abbott’s body was discovered next to a rail track in the capital Windhoek last Friday, with the body’s head severed. From an investigation point of view it was clear that Abbott’s body was laying in such a position in relation to the rail track that a passing train severed her head. An inquest docket was opened and evidence presented by investigators will now be submitted to the Office of the Prosecutor-General for a ruling over the cause of death. It was in the meantime said Abbott’s decision to end her life is based on a string of events which include her suffering from severe depression, at least one earlier suicide attempt and personal problems lately which placed her under immense personal stress.

Planning is crucial to prevent vehicle accidents
At the Ordinary Monthly Council meeting on Tuesday night, Councillor Penelope Martin-Louw pointed out despite safety campaigns and law enforcement drives, it seems thus if Namibia's attempts at road safety is futile. The Deputy Mayor called upon people planning to go away over the Easter long weekend to prepare. Prepare your journey in order to plan travelling time, in order to avoid speeding. Don't overload and check your vehicle for roadworthiness in time. Clr Martin-Louw's full address reads: “As the Easter weekend is approaching, we start experiencing the anxiety that usually comes with it. In this case I am not referring to the spiritual sustenance that people of the Christian faith associate with Easter. No, I am talking about our roads which are expected to be extremely busy again as many people will be travelling to be with loved ones in other parts of the country, or to break away. ROAD SAFETY: Every now and again we take stock of the danger posed by our roads as so many road users gamble with their own and other people's lives. The more we talk about it, launching campaign after campaign, the more futile our attempts seem to be. The number of people losing their lives on our roads is frightening and totally deplorable. With the resources at their disposable, I know that our traffic and related services do

Sharlien Tjambari A Scania cooler truck loaded with pork and sheep carcasses on way from Mariental to Walvis Bay went up in flames on Wednesday, after the driver lost control of the truck when the fully loaded trailer's right tyre burst. The driver managed to get the truck back on the road. According to Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, Erongo crime investigation coordinator the 47-year-old driver stopped the truck along the road and got out to investigate. He found the burst tyre and part of the trailer already on fire. He then managed to hook the trailer from the truck to save it from the already blazing fire. The red and white cooler truck belonging to Dikwels Transport Company in Mariental was carrying 95 pig carcasses and 135 sheep carcasses. The incident happened on the B2 road between Arandis and Swakopmund approximately 30km towards Swakopmund. The cooler truck trailer and its content with estimated value of: N$500 000 burned down completely to ashes”, added Iikuyu. The cause of the fire is yet to be established and the driver was unharmed.

Debris still not collected after fire incident Sharlien Tjambari Earlier this week a total number of six shacks burned down in Oletweni, Mondesa after a fire started on Erf 3059 and spread to 3085 and 3058, the victims suffered a great loss. An eye sore to the victims is that the debris still lying there. The Swakopmund Fire Brigade confirmed the incident and said they received a call about the fire at 03:00 on Sunday morning. According to the fire department, the cause of the fire is not yet known, and all six shacks burned down completely. Some of the fire victims are currently staying with family and at friends' houses however, usually when there is a fire like this, the department sends out trucks to come and clean up the debris. “This time the cinders and rubble from the inferno has been lying there for almost a week now, while some of these people have nowhere to go and want to rebuild but how do you rebuild, with that dirt there”, said one lady who requested for anonymity. When asked why the fire department has not yet sent out people to clean up, an official from the fire department said the owners of the erfs must approach the department and put in a request for them to go clean up the place. The victims claim however, that they told the fire fighters to send out someone to go clean the mess. It took the Fire Brigade close to three hours to set the fire out.

Despite the substandard quality, illegal trade of tobacco in Namibia results in the loss of revenue. To curb this illicit trade, cigarettes valued at N$8 000 were allegedly confiscated from a house in Mondesa, Swakopmund earlier this week. Charged with contravening section 41 & 90 of Customs and Excise Act, Act no. 20 of 1998 Dealing in illicit goods, alternatively possession of Yes cigarettes; Lonia Kaushitwa (36) and Oskary Shilongo (19) were arrested on Monday this week in Masilo Street, Mondesa. It is believed the cigarettes were illegally imported from Angola. Both Suspects were set to appear before the Swakopmund Magistrate Court on Wednesday this week.

We are also duty bound to report violations, wherever they occur, to the authorities. Not too long ago there were reports about a serial drunk driving offender who received a prison sentence as previous fines had not served the desired purpose at all. What was just as shocking as the on-road behaviour of this motorist was the outrage by some people who felt that sending the person to prison was too harsh. What does this say about our standard of conduct towards society? HEALTH ISSUES: By now everybody is well aware of the threat posed by the outbreak of Hepatitis E in Walvis Bay. In order to prevent the disease from wreaking havoc here, we are continuing with our awareness campaign and other interventions. These include the provision of mobile toilets in one of the more vulnerable areas. Unfortunately, at least one media report attempted to make a mockery of our efforts and even went as far as comparing our efforts to colonial practices. This was particularly disappointing because we value the support of the media in advocating good health practices to ensure healthy communities. The good news is that the overwhelming majority of our residents appreciate and welcome our efforts in this regard. That is also why the person who was the origin of the unhelpful media reports and who tried to frustrate our efforts via social media, was ultimately reprimanded by the affected community itself. During the series of public meetings we had on the subject of Hepatitis E, it was evident that the broader public needs to become more aware of such issues. In the meantime, we will continue with our various campaigns, including the general cleanliness of Walvis Bay. We need to make sure that we do whatever is necessary to ensure a healthy, clean town, and maybe as a bonus scoop an award or two. With the help of all our residents this is certainly possible. BUDGET: Another series of public meetings will be taking place this coming Thursday evening at 18:00. The topic of discussion is the new capital budget for the 2019/2020 financial year. For the past few years, more and more residents have realised the benefit of attending the budget meeting in order to be well-informed stakeholders of the brand Walvis Bay. This year should be no exception and residents can elect to attend any of the sessions at three different venues, namely the Side Hall at the Civic Centre, the Community Hall in Kuisebmond, and the Community Hall in Narraville. These meetings also create an opportunity for residents to seek clarity on issues pertaining to capital projects. After these consultations with the public, the budget will also be presented to the Regional Council, and for final approval to the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development before 15 April. While we are on the subject of the budget, I would like to take this opportunity to remind all municipal customers whose accounts are in arrears to take advantage of the Interest Amnesty period which is in force until the 31st of May this year. The interest amnesty exercise is not intended to write off the capital debts of customers but merely aimed at waiving the interest accrued to such capital, provided the capital debt is settled in full within the amnesty period. Customers should therefore confirm which portion of their debt is capital and how much is interest. Customers who want to make use of the amnesty should contact Mrs Johanna Shidute or Mrs Helena Resandt at the Credit Control Section as soon as possible. LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: His Worship the Mayor, Alderman Immanuel Wilfried, has mentioned in the most recent edition of his column, Mayor's Corner, about a number of bilateral agreements and opportunities to strengthen our relationships with other nations. As it is certainly worth repeating, he highlighted the delegations by President Uhuru Kenyatta, President of the Republic of Kenya, Dr Andrew Young, a well-known US diplomat and businessman, as well as a visit by a delegation from the Republic of Congo. All these delegations came with the intention to explore areas of possible partnerships in various industries in Walvis Bay. The Mayor also referred to his recent visit to Pointe-Noire in the Republic of Congo, which included Councillor Niilenge and the PR Manager. The delegation successfully signed an inter-municipal relationship agreement and now we are officially proclaimed as friendship cities. Namibia and Congo have a very long history and signing this agreement with Pointe-Noire will allow the two port cities to foster and strengthen the relationship further. The Mayor also expressed our collective hope that through these visits and prospects of investments we will create opportunities for mutually beneficial exchanges. We look forward to the reciprocal visit by a delegation from Pointe-Noire in due course. Fellow Councillors, Ladies and Gentlemen: We acknowledge that there will always be many challenges and perhaps even difficulties ahead, but the rewards of our collective efforts should make up for any distress along the way. As a Council we enjoy each other's support, as well as that of the municipal employees and residents to make sure that Walvis Bay remains one of Africa's jewels. Chamber of Mines Golden Jubilee The Chamber of Mines of Namibia celebrates its golden jubilee this year, marking 50 years of excellence and dedicated service to Namibia's mining industry. The Chamber of Mines was incepted in 1969. The 8th Namibian Mining Expo and Conference, slated for 8th and 9th May 2019 at the Windhoek Show Grounds, will hallmark the 50th birthday of the Chamber of Mines. “From its modest beginnings on 9 May 1969, the Chamber has endeavoured to serve the mining industry with excellence,” said CEO Veston Malango. “Started as the Association of Mining Companies in South West Africa, the Chamber and its members have made an immense contribution to the Namibian economy over the past five decades. The industry fully supported the young republic after Independence in 1990 and remains dedicated to promoting Namibia as the prime mining destination in Africa.” Malango added that the success of the Namibian mining industry would not have been possible without close cooperation and support from Government. “We have always strived to reconcile the interests of mines, workers and the economy at large through an open dialogue with our Namibian leaders,” said Malango. This has earned the Chamber of Mines recognition in Africa. It is often asked for advice by its counterparts from other African countries when tensions mount between Governments and mining companies.
For Malango, it is this ability to act as an honest broker that is key to the Chamber's success. 'We have demonstrated that we are not just fair weather friends. The industry continues to contribute to Namibia's socio-economic growth even in challenging times, while the Chamber of Mines plays an active role in shaping a healthy regulatory and policy environment, and through its committees serves as a strong peer review mechanism for the industry on issues of health and safety, environment, human resources and sustainability. This testifies to the strong leadership in both the industry and Government and creates confidence that we can tackle complex issues that will culminate in winwin solutions for the Namibian nation, the Government and the sector. Commenting on the performance of the industry, Mr Malango said that the mining sector was the best performing sector in 2018, as reported in the Preliminary National Accounts released by the Namibia Statistics Agency, recording a strong growth rate of 22%.“According to these statistics, the positive industry growth was driven by production increases of diamonds and particularly uranium, in comparison with 2017,” said Mr Malango.

Teen Accused for Attempted Murder Isaac Chikosi
A 35-year- old man was allegedly assaulted on Tuesday and was admitted at Omaruru State Hospital in Omaruru. Police reports reveal that at about 00:50 on Tuesday this week, Elvis Hansen (19) allegedly stabbed Gideon Immanuel (35) in the neck and upper body in the Hakahana area, Omaruru. Furthermore, Hansen allegedly hit the victim with a brick on the head, causing severe injuries. It is still unclear what prompted the assault. Hansen was arrested and was expected to appear before Omaruru Magistrate court on Wednesday this week. The incident was confirmed by Erongo crime investigation coordinator Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu. The victim is believed to be in a stable condition. Further investigations continue.
Twenty-seven-year-old Kalipiwe Aron was found dead in his garage in Kuisebmond,Walvis Bay on Monday, 1 April 2019. He died from suicide by hanging. Kalipiwe, according to family members, had financial problems. The deceased allegedly prepared for work early on Monday morning, but was later discovered.

Longest vessel in history of the floating dock... The floating, processing, storage and offloading vessel Petrojarl Cidade De Rio Das Ostras is currently alongside at Namdock III in the port of Walvis Bay. The vessel originates from Brazil and will be alongside at Walvis Bay for several weeks in anticipation of possible repair and maintenance work. At a total of length of 182,97 metres she is the longest ever vessel to be brought alongside at the floating dock facility of Elgin Brown Hamer Namibia in Walvis Bay.

PWC hands over whistles to NamPol's 'Keepmesafe' school awareness campaign Eileen van der Schyff
Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC) through their Omuhoko Trust partnered with NamPol and donated 500 whistles to the Namibian Police Force's 'Keepmesafe' awareness campaign on Friday, 29 March. The driving force behind PwC's partnering decision was after Country Senior Partner, Ms Nangula Uaandja expressed her concern towards the escalating reports of kidnapping and violence against children in Namibia. Panic was spread among Namibians in the past year when disturbing newspaper articles and social media posts about child abductions surfaced. PwC decided to try curb this evil by supplying school children with whistles which they can use when facing dangerous situations. Head of Crime Prevention Directorate Commissioner C Nakanyala said “The campaign will address violence against children in schools, homes and communities by teaching learners about their personal safety, equip them with safety tips and how to react to unsafe situations by immediately blowing a whistle whenever they are in distress, danger, feel threatened or find
themselves in sticky situations.” The spokesperson of PwC said: “We believe that this awareness campaign will result in quick reaction from the public when a crisis occurs. We appreciate the work that NamPol does in Namibia and look forward in building a nation that will participate in issues that effects the safety and wellbeing of our children. Twaloloka residents unhappy Rudi Bowe
The Walvis Bay municipality availed four bucket mobile toilets to minimise the risks of Hepatitis E, following an outbreak at the town a few weeks ago. Residents of the Twaloloka informal settlement in Kuisebmond Walvis Bay are unhappy with the mobile toilets as they are of the opinion the toilets will increase the spread of Hepatitis E at the settlement that is already vulnerable to other diseases due to ventilation and lack of appropriate sanitation. A resident in the informal settlement Stacy Babello said that there were six cases of Hepatitis E with three just recently detected and that this type of bucket system will only make it worse instead of restrict it. “This toilets cannot flush and this puts us the residents at bigger a risk to transmit illnesses. Before the bucket system toilets we the residents relieved ourselves in manholes that we dug in the ground” Babello added. Nehale LyaMpingana Nehale, another resident said this is a health risk for the small children in the resettlement and that this is not what they expected. The area is serviced and the municipality could have put up proper temporary and dignified facilities for the residents. “We request assistance from Walvis Bay Municipality for better facilities while they are working on the affordable houses” Nehale added. The representative of the municipality that was present with the handover of the toilets said that the rental company will clean the buckets six days a week except Sundays and that the rental cost will be paid by the Walvis Bay municipality. Walvis Bay municipality said they did this to prevent the further spread of any disease and that the municipality at the Twaloloka settlement are looking at more sustainable solutions and apart from the contracted cleaning company, the resident must also clean after using the facilities.

Namport Social Investment fund hands Pre-Delivery Facility The fully-furnished two-bedroom building can accommodate 15 expectant to the Ministry of Health mothers at any given time. Eileen van der Schyff Namport, under its social fund (NSIF), responded to the plea of expectant mothers in and around the Usakos district and commissioned the construction of a N$1.1 million PreDelivery Facility which was officially handed over to the Ministry of Health on 15 March 2019. The next day, the same fund also handed over two modular classrooms at the Ovihitua Primary School in the Omatjete Constituency valued at N$630,000 After this NSIF has spent a total of 41.8 % of its budget in the Erongo Region since 2006. Soon to be mothers must travel over 30 to 50 kilometres from the surrounding Usakos district villages to the Usakos State Hospital's Maternity ward. Worrying about accomodation while waiting to be admitted in the hospital adds unnecessary stress to the mom which affects the unborn baby. Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Health, Special Advisor of Health in the President's Office, Dr Bernard Haufiku said that the long coming plea for help from expectant mothers has been answered and challenged all other captains of industry to follow the good example set by Namport. Speaking at the same auspicious event, CEO of Namport and Chairperson of Namport NSIF, said that Namport continues to pledge its alliance with the government's efforts in supplying quality health to its citizens. “As an entity, we are intentionally choosing to be grateful for the things we have. And we want to extend this gratitude to those around us”. He concluded by highlighting the fact that the entity has over the years invested millions in the health sector and would like to continue doing so if funds permit.
The new edition to the school's existing two classrooms infrastructure was also handed over by NSIF the next day and will cater for 40 learners who previously used two tents as their shelter. The two new classrooms each has its own storeroom which will also ensure that the school's principal has an office of her own. The tent structures proved to be a health hazard for the learners during winter and rainy seasons and this interfered with education. The school's Principal Ms Kapia said: “Due to this sponsorship, our students will now receive education in a safe and clean environment without being exposed to any of nature's elements, and for that we can never thank the Namport Social Investment Fund enough”.

An der Atlantikküste,in der Namibwüste Schulbasar der 21jährigen PSS war die Bombe! Swakopmund(sk) Am vergangenen Samstag brummte es auf dem Schulgelände der Privatschule Swakopmund, als Hunderte von Besuchern den Basar der nun volljährig gewordenen Schule in der Kühnaststraße in Vineta besuchten. Vor 21 Jahren haben sieben Schüler und eine Lehrkraft die Privatschule Swakopmund ausgemacht. Hinter ihnen stand eine Gruppe Eltern, das Ehepaar Horst und Sylvia Fritze, Berti und Dörte Witte, HansWerner und Monika Thesen sowie Herman und Susann Kinghorn, die sich auch durch negative Medien-Schlagzeilen wie “Schneewittchen und die sieben Zwerge” nicht entmutigen ließen. Inzwischen beherbergt die damalige Miniaturinstanz 423 Schüler. Auch sind die meisten Gründungsmitglieder noch immer an der PSS engagiert, sei es als Lehrkraft, als Faktotum oder einfach nur als Eltern ehemaliger Schüler aber immer aus Liebe zu dem aufregenden Unterfangen Privatschule Swakopmund. Die Schule, die Pastor Michael Schlage zur Einweihung vor 21 Jahren im deutschen Pfadfinderheim als kleines Senfkorn bezeichnet hat, ist expandiert, hat sich mächtig gedehnt und gestreckt, seine Fühler weit ausgestreckt und sich zu einer stets neue Blüten trei-

Die Klasse 10B hat sich einen ganz besonderen, gesunden Stand ausgedacht. Es gab frischen Fruchtsalat, Obst-Sosaties und mehr. Klasse an - und somit den Cambridge A-Level Abschluss! Eine englische Vorschule (Grade R) ist vor drei Jahren eingeführt worden. Zusätzlich wird Mandarin im Unterricht der Mittel- und Oberstufe als Wahlfach sowie in Abendkursen für Erwachsene angeboten. Die Privatschule Swakopmund bzw. das ehemals kleine Senfkorn wächst und gedeiht. Inzwischen werden dort auch Förderklassen für Mathematik angeboten, und genereller Förderunterricht in den verschiedenen Fächern ist ebenso im Angebot und in gewissen Situationen sogar verpflichtend, sobald von Seiten der PSS die Sorge besteht, dass ein Schüler es daohne nicht schafft. Auch ist die PSS gerade dabei, sich in eine Öko-Schule zu entwickeln, und 2018 ist sie eine PASCHSchule geworden. Das haben die Medien bereits intensiv gedeckt. Zurück zum diesjährigen Basar! “Es war der beste Basar überhaupt”, begeisterte sich eine Besucherin. Man kann den Damen Metti Daiber, Vaida van der Merwe, Carola Lorck, Dagmar Wacker und ihrem Team sowie den Schülern mit ihren viefältigen Ständen nur herzlichst gratulieren. Was fiel wieder auf?! Die Höflichkeit, Begeisterung und das Selbstvertrauen der PSS-Schüler!

Kauanivi wins Coastal Marathon Rudi Bowe
Mynhardt Kauanivi was again crowned as the winners of the annual Sanlam Coastal Marathon. Kauanivi who was the winner of the first marathon last year crossed the finish line a few minutes later in the second edition. He claimed the gold medal in the 42.2km race in a time of 02:28:20. 18. and prize money of N$15 000 and an all-expenses paid participation in the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon in September this year. The First woman crossing the finish line in the 42.2km race was Ndeshimona Ekandjo clocking a time of 02:55:30.60. She won N$15 000 and an allexpenses paid participation in the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon in September this year. Paulus NdangiIiyambo finished second in a time of 02:30:25.56 and Frans Hosea third, in the men's section in a time of 02:34:36.41. In the women's section, Alina Armasended finished second in a time of 02:58:41.05 and South Africa's Stephanie Smit, third, in a time of 03:12:51.95. With over 700 participants, the Marketing and Communications Manager of Sanlam Namibia Hilaria Graig was very impressed with the results and said that this event with its four categories, the 5km fun walk and run, 10km, 21km and the 42.2km marathon, was once again a big success. Graig said: “We were pleasantly surprised by the high turnout as we had set an expectation of 500 participants in the marathon�. She added that the Sanlam Coastal Marathon will be back next year and ensures that it will be better. The date for next year's Sanlam Coastal Marathon will be announced soon.

NVF Beach Open
Supatronix Doubles Open Buccaneers hosted the 2019 Supatronix Doubles Open which without a doubt is one the most well-liked open events in the country.
The Namibian Volleyball Federation (NVF) 2019 Bank Windhoek Swakopmund Beach Volleyball Open competition that took place over Independence weekend witnessed 18 top beach volleyball teams participate. The competing categories were: Men's & Social 2-a-side with the men's Championship Title went to Stefanus Kangandjera & Bernhard Schurz. This was the first ever tournament wins for Stefanus & Bernhard as a partnership. They overcame the brothers Danilo & Andriko von Ludwiger in the final, winning 2:0 (21:19, 21:15) to be crowned NVF Bank Windhoek Swakopmund Open Champions. Third place went to Conrad Johannes & James Verrinder. The Social 2-a-side first place went to the duo of Michael Fente & Jorn Lüsse They overcame Nashikaku Sakeus & Kathima Matilde in the Social final, winning 2:1 (21:16, 16:21 & 15:12) to take the title. Third place went to the young pair of Hendrina Lindongo & Anna Henghono. The Namibian Volleyball Federation (NVF) in its continued efforts to decentralize the sport and move its focus away from the capital and into the regions. The NVF will host 2 beach volleyball events in the North this year; (Rundu & Oshakati, dates to be announced soon, after the huge success of the two beach volleyball events and clinics in October 2018. James Verrinder, NVF Director of Beach Volley-
ball said, “We have a very well-established beach volleyball community in both Khomas & Erongo region, and we want to continue to work towards development in the North of Namibia, were 6-a-side volleyball is already very well established”. It's been a pleasure to work with the Bank Windhoek team again and we really appreciate the huge support they continue to give to volleyball in Namibia” This coming weekend, also in Swakop is the NVF Bank Windhoek DOC Tournament, hosted at The Dome. This will bring together 6-a-side teams from around Namibia to battle it out to become the Champion. Game starts on Saturday 30 March and conclude on Sunday 31 March 2019. Fourty four entries came from Windhoek, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, which made up the Men's A & B, Mixed and Ladies sections. It was a grueling two days of squash, particularly in the Men's A section team. The teams very closely matched and was game on right from the start. After an absence of a year, siblings Emil and Norbet Dorgeloh teamed up again to try and reclaim the title they took in 2017. They came up against Clifford de Witt and Kyle Kriel in the final. Cliffy and Kyle seemed to concentrate their play more on Emil than Norbet and peppered him with an impressive array of shots, but he rose to the occasion and with support from his brother, broke them to take the match 3-1. They played with such determination and emotion that lifting the Trophy and title of the 2019 Supatronix Doubles Open could not have been a better comeback for them. In the Ladies final Chantel and Chelsea de Gouveia retained the title and trophy with a good win over Charne Fourie and Tessa Rossouw. Leslie Bosman and Gerhard Lottering with racquets blazing beat Wynand Labuschagne and Arno Kok to take the Men's Plate. Sharde Fisher and Shawn Mouton took the B section by beating Patrick Quinn and Willem van Duijvenbode quite comfortably. A bruising encounter between Norbet Dorgeloh and Chantel de Gouveia marked a great win against Max Endjala and Adri Lambert to reclaim their title form 2017. Memories of this encounter will linger with Adri for quite a few weeks to come. Mr Jose de Brito of Supatronix was more than impressed with the turnout and standard of play and expressed his pleasure by announcing that he looked forward to sponsoring the event again next year. Squash was a thing of the past for a few hours as the event was wrapped up with a magic braai and refreshments to replace body fluids. Till next year. High School and ESU golf day As expected last weekend was a cracker, with the HIGH SCHOOL and ESU golf days. The ESU day saw 36 die hard turn out for a well sponsored Betterball with 6 one scores, 6 both scores and 6 multipliers to count. Quite complicated for some with Jason Barnard and Shane Westerdale using all 6 one scores on the first nine which left some interesting pressure golf on the second nine. Winner on a jolly fine 86 points [multipliers must have worked well] were Andre Burger and Herman Neethling on a very good 86 points 10 better than second placed Willie van Zyl and Pieter Fox, who won the count out from Nardo Sardinha and Koot Potgieter. 4th place went to Mr and Mrs Grobler on 75 points, while Johnny Truter and Deville Dreyer came in 6th with 74 points. The final prize went to Eddie van Wyk and Herman Schmit on 72 points. Two clubs were scored by Koot Potgieter (two) and Shane Westerdale. The WINDHOEK LAGER INTERNATIONAL PAIRS was also played and on a good 43 points and winning the count out were Jason Barnard and Shane Westerdale, so they will go to the play offs in Windhoek later in the year.Thanks to the HIGH SCHOOL and their sponsors for another well run day. This weekend Wayne Hart stepped up to the plate to sponsor and the format is a Betterball with both scores to count on only the even number holes. The Bank Windhoek Volleyball Doc Tournament saw 15 female and 18 male teams contesting for top honours in the thirty ninth Doc Tournament held at the Dome in Swakopmund. The oldest volleyball tournament, “if not the oldest sports tournament in the country” was this year hosted by the Erongo Volleyball Association in conjunction with the Namibian Volleyball Federation (NVF) and sponsored by Bank Windhoek. The President on the NVF Hillary Dux Imbuwa said that the development plan that were put in place a few years ago is working as more young players are registering at clubs country wide and that the federation will create opportunities for these young players on national level. “The Federation will soon start with the selection of national development teams” Imbuwa added Imbuwa said that the Doc tournament will be turning 40 years next year and the NVF would like to celebrate this by hosting a celebration tournament. He therefore urges all old volleyball players to contact the NVF if they would like to be part of the celebrations. Imbuwa told the Namib Times that the NVF and the Namibian Paralympics Commission will sign a joint venture to get Para volleyball “Sitting Volleyball” in the country with the official launch to be held within the next few months in Windhoek. Mr Berndt Hoffmann who played a major role in the development of volleyball in Namibia and passion for the game who was a special guest at the tournament said “Young people should not spoil their future by using drug and
alcohol and having babies at n young age as it will stop them from participating in sport and that there are too many children growing up without fathers. Hoffmann donated 9 mobile Volleyball sets to be used for the development of the game as well a cow from his farm to the NVF. The Namibian Defence Force (NDF) overpowered their NamPower 2-1 in the first semi-final with the UNAM Rundu Campus beat Khomas Nampol 2-1 in the second semi-final. NDF team then won the final as they defeat the students from the UNAM Campus in Rundu 3-1 to be crowned champions with Nampower third after defeating Khomas Nampol via forfeit. In women's category, Khomas Nampol defeated Happy Du, 2 - 0 in their semi-final match and in the second semi-final Revivals one of the oldest volleyball clubs in the country defeated another old kid on the block, Six Stars 2-0. In the final Revivals trashed Khomas Nampol 3-0 to be crown the 2019Bank Windhoek Volleyball Doc Tournament champions. Happy Du took the third position after defeating Six Stars 2-0. The winners in both the men and women's categories walked away with N$5 000 the trophy and the gold medals with the runners up pocket N$3 000 and the silver medals while the third place in both categories got N$2 000 and bronze medals with N$1 000 for the fourth placed teams each.
The Region 5 Amateur Golf Tournament previously known as the Zone 6 Tournament will be held under the auspices of the R & A is scheduled to take place at the Rossmund Golf Course from 8- 11 April 2019 for the third year in succession.
Region 5 is made up of 10 countries mainly Angola; Botswana; Lesotho; Malawi; Mozambique; Namibia; South Africa; Swaziland (Eswatini); Zambia & Zimbabwe. At this point in time only Botswana and Mozambique have not answered the call – however Mauritius requested to play giving us a 9 country starting line-up. Each country will be represented by four players. The Namibian Team will consist of four Coastal Players – Kevin Wentzel; Likuis Nande; Grant Mather & Stanley Gawanab. Play will commence with a practice round and the Opening Ceremony on Monday 8 April – giving the players a chance to enjoy and experience the course especially where the “desert meets the green” this will be followed by 54 holes of stroke play and a final 18 holes of match play on Thursday – the tournament comes to a close with a prize giving ceremony to be held at the Swakopmund Plaza Hotel. Tournaments of this magnitude cannot take place without the generous support of sponsors and the time consuming efforts of the tournament committee and their numerous helpers. Young bowling team in SA Four young and very promising lawn bowlers represented Namibia against 33 from provinces from all over South Africa at the under 20bowls Tournament hosted by Bowls South Africa in Bloemfontein. The Namibian team member were 14-year-old Ronan Olivier a learner at Walvis Bay Private High School and bowler from Namib Park Bowling Club in Walvis Bay is playing bowls for about 4 years and last year he was on the winning team at the under 20 championships as he represented the Free State at the same tournament. Ronan the younger brother of Cabous Olivier who has represented Namibia in the past and will do so again in May when the National team travels to Cardiff, Wales, to participate in the Atlantic championships. AJ Vissera16 years old also from Walvis Bay Private High School and a bowler from Namib Park Bowling Club in Walvis Bay is been playing bowls for 3 years. The youngest player in the team was Ané Olivier, only 12 years old and is been playing for a year. She says she likes to stay active and also does karate for which she was awarded National colours in 2017. Lesley Vermeulen, who has played for Namibia on numerous occasions, accompany the under 20 team as the team manager. JP Fouche who incidentally is also Ané's coach and the oldest player in the team at the age of 17 from the Eros Bowling Club in Windhoek is been playing bowls for 5 years and is a fully qualified coach. He states that bowls is very sociable, fun, addictive as well as competitive and requires significant concentration. Teams were divided into six divisions, with Namibia competing against WP-A, EkurhuleniB, Border-B, King Fisher-B and the South Free State B. The King Fisher team is from the Natal south coast. The teams packed each other on a league base so the players had to keep their concentration, as each game rolled ten times to each side of the track. On day one Namibia was unbeaten after four games, but on the second day things weren't going to make the young players quite fluent. The team won their first match and draws equally in the second, but has to bend the rest of the day. The Namibians regained their better game and won two games on the third day but it was unfortunately too late for the youngsters to avert the onslaught of the South Africans. They end with 19 points out of 115 shots and stands 68 and third in their division and just miss an outing to the knockout phase.
