Weekend of suicides Eileen van der Schyff Two Swakopmund men, in two separate incidents, took their own lives over the weekend. It is suspected that a man shot himself in the head with a revolver on Saturday this past weekend. The revolver was found in his right hand. The police found another shotgun in the room where the man took his own life. A family friend of the deceased Dirk Jacobus Visser (57), made the gruesome discovery, after his daughter who works in Mali got worried because her father did not answer her phone calls, and contacted Mr. Francouis Jacobs to check on her father. According to Mr. Jacobs, Visser was suffering with depression since the passing away of his wife some time ago. He also since then resorted to heavy alcohol consumption. Visser was last seen alive in the morning hours of 31 August. The police found no possible break in or forced entry and no foul play is suspected. In another incident, John William Isaks (44), was found

Points to ponder about fishing Namibia’s Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources used the occasion of an official event opening of the Ongwediva Trade Fair to give the nation Three Key Points: 1. The Policy intention of a fishing right; 2. Maximizing fisheries economic benefits –to all Namibians; 3. Fisheries cannot do it alone…we must use ALL Namibian resources to develop Namibia. The Policy Intention of a Fishing Right. 1. In terms of our Act (Section 32), no one is allowed to go fishing without a fishing right. · A fishing right is a sovereign decision by the Government, to allow fishing access to its citizens. · Our fishery is 'rights based' not 'effort based'. Access to our fisheries is not reserved for those with capacity, but those with a right. · A right is a deliberate Policy to ensure that Namibians have access to their fisheries. ·Having a right means you go fishing…not to get a quota and sell it to operators in Walvis Bay. · Selling a quota denies the country an opportunity to get previously disadvantaged Namibians economically empowered to participate in our fisheries. · This is the intention of Namibianization, which is in line with NEEEF. Not all Namibians can have a fishing right. · There is not enough fish (TAC) in the sea to allow all Namibians to go fishing. · Those that are privileged to have a right –have a responsibility to unlock the fisheries economic potential, on behalf of all Namibians. · The economic benefits of our fisheries must flow to all Namibians, since our fisheries belong to all Namibians. Maximizing Economic Potential of Our Fisheries. Our Fisheries economic potential is unlocked and maximized as follows: 1. Through fishing. Unless someone takes the fish out of water, and lands it, other value chain activities such as processing and marketing cannot be realized. · Those who have capacity to fish realize the highest benefits from our fisheries. · Policy Intention: to empower Namibians to own and operate fishing vessels · Through value addition: · Policy Intention: to maximize the value of our fisheries retained here in Namibia · We cannot continue to export raw fish-to be value added out of the country –that is exporting processing jobs. c) Policy (NDP5 Targets): 70% of hake is processed in Namibia. 70% of horse mackerel must be value added by 2022) 3. Through local procurement of goods and services · At lease N$ 3 billion is spend on food rations, logistics, stevedoring services, financial services. These are business opportunities for our people, which need to be unlocked. 4. Through enterprise development: · Our industry must invest in establishing fish shops, fish processing points, which can be run by our people in rural and urban areas. We must share the economic benefits. 5. Through revenue to the Government ·In 2016/2017, I have tripled the resource rent (levies and fees) paid by industry into Treasury and the Ministry, from about 1-2% before 2016 of total landed value to 6% of total landed value, at the moment. Total revenue to Government is now over N$ 600 million. Fisheries cannot do it alone… I know all Namibians want fishing rights, and some people may think that fisheries has unlimited resources for national development. BUT: 1) The Fact is –we cannot give all Namibians fishing rights. There is simply not enough fish to go around –the TAC is limited to 530,000MT per year. Giving too may rights would make investment in the fishing sector un profitable. Perhaps we are too open about fisheries, which are why everyone knows about fishing rights. Namibians must also be exposed to opportunities in our other natural and economic resources. 2) Fishing quotas must continue to contribute to national development We must however strike a healthy balance between Governmental quotas and sustainability of our fisheries private sector, which is charged with the responsibility of doing value addition and creating much needed jobs for our youth. 3) All other economic sectors must open up opportunities for all Namibians, and maximize on Resource Rent (Government revenue) collection. Therefore, Fisheries is 3rdlargest income earner in the country…others must do their share.

New developments threaten Swakopmund’s old infrastructure Staff Reporter New developments in Swakopmund threaten old infrastructure and underground service networks. Of concern to many home owners and businesses, such as guesthouses, is the toil the new construction activities have on the already out-dated underground sewage and water network in Swakopmund. New developments in Swakopmund pose a real threat to the sewage and water networks. These developments sometimes include the rezoning of residential areas, resulting in a capacity discrepancy. In this case a building meant to cater for a household is pulled down and multiple story buildings erected with up to a 100% increase in capacity. Alex Shmitt a guesthouse owner in the Strand street area argues that despite objections from neighbours, the council still approved the construction of new developments in the area. A copy of correspondence sent to the namib times showed approval for rezoning in a residential area despite objection in writing from property owners in the area. An Ordinary Council meeting report dated

January 25 this year shows that objections were made with valid concerns about water pressure, citing the drain blockages that have resulted in surface flooding or run-off. Coupled with this, is the risk of contamination and possible spread of disease as well as the reduced aesthetic value of surrounding properties. These issues adversely affect any business that seeks to maintain a hygienic standard, especially when catering to the tourism industry. Those who objected to the application for rezoning also argued that the tranquility of the area would be compromised. Although the new buildings present a facelift for the city and provide more opportunity for businesses, these buildings are essentially over capacity as the current sewer network is not updated simultaneously. Consideration of the current problems experienced by this include sewage blockages and low water pressure, which is experienced by the guesthouse and home owners. “The flooding of Strand street happens nearly every week�,

mentions Shmitt. Wi t h t h e p r e v i o u s complaints about sewer blockages this month from other property owners, the council has its hands full with a labyrinth of issues to consider. There is much speculation too, that the uncontrolled blasting happening in the town is also affecting underground pipes and networks. The claims are yet to be confirmed. A conflict exists as new businesses and developers need the development for economic growth yet the results at the end of the day show the impact of these actions on existent buildings and underground networks. Indulge Guesthouse which appeared previously in this paper is one of those negatively affected by these activities. The adverse effects here are twofold. Businesses in the area may fail to satisfy clients with adequate comfortability for guests and the inconvenience of having to deal with blockages, smells from the waste effluent and compromised water pressure.

One life lost in fire incident at Karibib Josefine Beukes (47) was burned to death when a shack which she was sleeping in caught fire on Sunday around 03:40 at the Harambee informal settlement in Karibib. The body was burned beyond recognition. In a statement, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu said it is alleged that the deceased came home from her drinking spree as narrated by deceased's sister who is her neighbour. "The cause of the fire could not be ascertained at this stage but it is suspected that the deceased might have slept while a candle was still alight. The shack has been razed to the ground during this incident", added Iikuyu. The body of the deceased was taken to Walvis Bay Police Morgue for post-mortem. Next of kin informed.

German Woman dies in car accident on Uis road A Toyota Land Cruiser with registration no. N351KR overturned last week on the gravel road from Omaruru to Uis. A 79-year old German born resident who was residing in Uis died at the scene. The incident took place around 16:30 last week Wednesday. It is further alleged that, about 7 km before Uis the 79-year old driver lost control over the vehicle and the vehicle overturned. She passed away at the scene. According to Erongo regional crime investigating coordinator Erastus Iikuyu who confirmed the incident, the next of kin have not been traced yet because they are in Germany. The body was taken to the Walvis Bay police mortuary for post-mortem examination.

Truck leaves scene of an accident on B2 coastal road

On Saturday, a white Isuzu pick-up with a Windhoek registration number was hit by an oncoming truck, causing the vehicle to veer off the road. Kids Haven received Round Table Walvis Bay donated blackest and food to the value of N$-12000 Kids Haven in Walvis Bay as part of their National Winter Knights project hosted by Round Table Namibia. Kids Haven was founded about ten years ago by Maureen Baard as a place of safe keeping for the marginalised and needy children in the Walvis Bay communities. Round Table is part of the Haven for the past ten years. Ms. Baard said that there are only 25 kids with an age group between one and four months up to the age of 21 at the haven. They would like to take in more kids, but due to the financial constrain in the haven it is not possible. Ms Baard mentioned that the Kids Haven is for the community and therefore plea to the community of the harbour town to also help the Haven. One of their kids finished grade 12 and are know a student at the Namibia University of Science and Technology in Windhoek. "As this kid doesn't have a bursary or any other means to pay for his studies, we at the Haven would like to ask for any company or person to help Enzo" Baard said. Baard thanked Round Table and the community for their help and hope that they will go on to support the Round Table and marginalised and needy children of Walvis Bay and if there is a Good Samaritan that would like to assist Kids Haven they can contact her at 0812218081. The Convener of the Round Table Walvis Bay Winter Knights Leigh Westerdale said "A massive thank you to all the sponsors and the community for their help with the project". He mentioned that at the corner of Sam Nujoma Ave and 10th road opposite the Engen Service Station is a Big Round Table Bin where the community can still drop their donations in the form of Blankets and Clothes for the needy.

Charred remains of newborn found in dunes - a week of horror for Namibian children The charred remains of a newborn baby were found in the dunes a mere 250 meters from the nearest homes in Narraville on Tuesday. This shocking discovery was on the same day as an equally horrifying discovery in Windhoek of a nine year old girl who was murdered, her body burnt and mutilated. A boy playing made the discovery in the dunes on Tuesday. The brutality against Namibian children has sent shockwaves throughout Namibian society this week. The Namibian Police's spokesperson for Erongo, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu confirmed the incident of the discovery of the charred remains of the newborn and said a case of concealment of birth is now under investigation. It is reported the baby's charred remains were found late in the afternoon on Tuesday. [28 August]. At the scene, the Police found the charred remains half buried in the sand. According to the Deputy Commissioner likuyu the gender of the baby could not be determined straight away, since the human remains were burnt beyond recognition. It is also allegedly suspected the incident occurred about a month or even two months ago. The Walvis Bay public is requested to provide any information that can lead to the identification of the mother of the child. All information can be provided to the Gender Based Violence Protection Sub-Division at Walvis Bay at 064-219068. Information can also be provided to your nearest police station. There was also an outpouring of grief this week in Walvis Bay after the discovery of the body of nine year old Avihe Cheryl Ujaha in Khomasdal in Windhoek on Tuesday. The little girl's murder and mutilation plunged the country in shock and disbelief. Namibia maintains perfect starts

The Namibia under 20 Rugby team continued to set the pace following day two of the World Rugby U/20 2018 Trophy in Bucharest.

Namibia National Women Cricket team was crowned Champions as they have been on a record breaking spree at the Botswana 7s T20I tournament in Gaborone. Namibia Women's team won their final match against Sierra Leone Women and remained unbeaten throughout the 6 matches played in the 7-nation event with team and player ranking points in ICC T20I rankings for all the participants except the Zambia Women's team, which had 1 Botswana representative player in their squad. Matches between the teams of host's Botswana, Namibia, Sierra Leone, Mozambique, Lesotho and Malawi were considered for official T20I status and ranking points. Namibia Women's captain Yasmeen Khan was adjudged the Player of the Match in the final game while Adri van der Merwe was awarded the Player of the Tournament recognition for her performances in the tournament. The final match between Sierra Leone Women and Namibia Women ended up as a one-sided affair as Namibia restricted Sierra Leone to only 80/4 in their 20 overs and then chased it down in 11.1 overs, making 81/1 in the process. The batting and bowling records in the tournament have been dominated by players from Namibia, Sierra Leone, Mozambique and Botswana. To access the records. Host's Botswana and Sierra Leone are tied at the 2nd place in the points table with 3 wins from 4 games in the tournament. Mozambique Women have also clinched a maiden T20I victory out of their 4 matches while Malawi Women also registered their maiden T20I win over Lesotho Women on 22nd Aug 2018 (Score sheet unavailable at the moment). The round of matches played saw Namibia Women break new Women's T20I team records against Mozambique Women and Lesotho Women respectively. Mozambique was bowled out for only 25 runs for Namibia to claim the World record of dismissing a team for the lowest total ever, beating India's record of dismissing Malaysia Women for 27 in the ACC Women's Asia Cup held in Jun 2018. The total match aggregate of only 51 runs was also a new Women's T20I World record for the lowest match aggregate beating the total of 73 runs made in the match between Malaysia Women and Thailand Women in the ACC Women's Asia Cup. Their next match against Lesotho Women saw Namibia post the 3rd highest Team total in a Women's T20I, reaching 210/5 in their 20 overs (bettered only by NZ Women's 216/1 against South Africa Women and England Women's 250/3 against South Africa Women). Namibia bowlers then restricted Lesotho to only 31/7 in their 20 overs to win the match by 179 runs, a new Women's T20I World record, beating Pakistan Women's victory over Malaysia Women's in ACC Women's Asia Cup by 147 runs. Sierra Leone Women had a brilliant day out in the field as they beat both Botswana Women and Malawi Women to go joint 2nd in the points table along with the host's. Botswana vs Namibia

Archery, Hockey and Gymnastics to Youth Olympic Games Rudi Bowe

"With South Africa selecting their sevens rugby team, the Namibian girls hockey team was then automatically chosen by the International Hockey Union to took part in the Youth Games as the girls finishing second," Xoagub said. Xoagub mentioned that with only three sport codes qualified for the games we are hoping to have more athletes from different codes possibly added before the deadline that was last Friday 31 August 2018. NNOC secretary general and the head of mission for these games Joan Smit, said "These games will be during the school term and we do not want the athletes' education to be affected, that is why most of them are training at home so they can still study." The athletes who qualified for the games are; Quinn Reddig who qualified at the African Youth

Games in Algiers as she won a gold medal in the individual archery event and is coached and managed by Frank Reddig. She will travel to a high-performance centre in Lausanne, Switzerland two weeks ahead of the games to prepare. Thalia Loveira qualified at the African Gymnastics Championships in Cairo, Egypt in April, where she won gold in the trampoline event. Loveira is coached and managed by Veselin Kostin. The girl's hockey team consists of Kiana Cormack, Sonet Crous, Kahntwa Kruger, Danja Meyer, Taramarie Myburgh, Kaela Schimming, Carien and Joane van Rooyen and Cele Wessels and is coached by Shayne Cormack. The team manager is Manda Myburgh and the extra official is Conrad Wessels.

The Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC) announced that Archery, Hockey and Gymnastics are the only three codes that will represent Namibia from 6 to 18 October at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This year will be the fourth time that the Youth Olympic Games will be held and a country is only allowed to have one team competing in team events. NNOC president Abner Xoagub said "We did really well at the African Youth Games in Algeria and we hope we can improve on that performance at the Youth Olympics.
