Namib Times turns 60 tomorrow, 5 December 2018. The first edition of the coast’s only local newspaper hit the streets of Walvis Bay and Swakopmund on the morning of 5 December 1958. The founder of the newspaper was the late Paul Louis Vincent. Paul Vincent was synonymous with the newspaper for more than 40 years. Due to ill health, Vincent sold the newspaper on 2 July 2002 to businessmen Dean Kock and Desmond Frankfort. The newspaper will tomorrow celebrate six decades of bringing you the local news. A tradition we want to continue for decades more to come. At this juncture Namib Times wishes to pay tribute to its readers and its advertising clients. contributions over these many decades. We will also take the time tomorrow, on our 60th Anniversary, to think of our departed colleagues, but also of their loved ones who must live with their loss every day. Continued from page 1 CNUC is set to buy out Rio Tinto's 68,62 % stake in Rössing Uranium Limited (RUL). RUL owns the Rössing Mine. Other shareholders are: the Namibian Government (3.4%) through Epangelo, The Islamic Republic of Iran owns 15,29 % in RUL through its Foreign Investment Company. Iran bought the stake before its fallout with the West decades ago and has no taking rights on Rössing Mine (it has no right to uranium ore or yellow cake produced). The Industrial Development Company of South Africa owns 10.22% and the other minority shareholders own a combined 2.5%. Following the announcement recently that Rio Tinto and CNUC signed a sales agreement, and subsequent media reporting that China is set for a monopoly on Namibia's uranium mining (Husab is 100 % Chinese-owned, the Ministry of Mines
and Energy issued a statement to set some aspects of the record straight. The most important factor, according to the statement is that neither Government approval nor Competition Commission approval has been obtained yet. This can only be interpreted that the deal is not yet final. Secondly, the Ministry also assured that should the deal go through, the other existing shareholders remain (in total 31,38 %) and that it is inaccurate to assume Rössing Mine would be 100 % Chinese-owned. According to the statement the Ministry of Mines and Energy has knowledge of the selling since 2017, but admitted to date it has not yet seen the sales agreement. The Ministry undertakes to inform the public on issues of public interest and assured it business as usual at the Mine until further notice.

The Swakopmund Council welcomed Mr Archie Benjamin on Monday, the new Chief Executive Officer for Swakopmund. From the outset Mr Benjamin said he is willing to listen and is open to exchange ideas with Councillors, management and staff. In his very first speech as CEO of Swakopmund, Benjamin said he is cognisant that the opportunity which was granted to him to lead the Swakopmund Council team was not an easy decision. “I pledge my whole-hearted dedication and commitment in realising Council's vision. I am looking forward to join your dynamic team and in doing so ensuring the city’s continued growth”. Benjamin further said: “I am aware that we face bigger challenges which we need to address with the same vigor. I am willing to put myself to work with Council, management and staff, to make this city even greater. What I do not know I am willing to learn”.
Adding in the next few days he will be consulting widely, both internal and external. “I have ideas of my own and I believe that if we are achieving the ideas/strategic goals we have set we need everyone on board, we need team work. Eseb Nature Conservancy a vehicle to combat poverty Eileen van der Schyff
The !Oe Gan traditional authority seated at Okombahe, under the leadership of Mr. Gerson Gurirab, is tackling poverty and unemployment head-on through the establishment of the Eseb Nature Conservancy. The Conservancy was established in 2017 and enjoys support from the Office of the Governor of Erongo. The conservancy's focus is solely on tourism and various ownership models within tourism. These include conservancy-owned lodges, joint venture lodges between communities and private sector investors, campsites (conservancy-community owned); trophy hunting concessions, own-use hunting concessions and alternative hunting (for example bow-hunting) concessions. Gurirab explained the Conservancy places a high premium on traditional rights, customary traditions and the involvement of all community members. In this way the Concession promotes transparency and all stakeholders remain united in a common purpose. Ownership. According to Gurirab ownership of tourism assets must strike a balance. On the one end the Conservancy wants to own its tourism assets, but investors too need ownership in order to have a return on investment. Investment and long-term ownership can only be lured if accountable and responsible ownership are promoted. The Conservancy also wants to see skills be developed for locals to manage and operate tourism assets. In this case mentorship will also play a key role. The community in the !Oe Gan traditional aut-
hority area sees potential in the Conservancy to generate income. The Conservancy management urges its members in the area to register for membership and attend meetings. Temporary elected conservancy committee members were nominated to represent the members on the steering committee. The !Oe Gan traditional authority also envisages to make room for youth and disabled persons in its constitution. The constituency required sites for hospitality businesses and has prospects for possible mining. The Eseb Nature Conservancy is surrounded by the Gaingu and Tsiseb Conservancy that also benefits from natural resources in the area and supports the initiative as brothers and sisters. The constituency will have a meeting where they will invite members to discuss minimal issues with the finalisation of the Conservancy Constitution. During this meeting, measures to develop the constitution will be discussed with a full presentation of the viability of the Conservancy. The meeting will be conducted at the Conservancy tree in Okombahe 23 – 24 December. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Republic of Namibia (ELCRN) Young People's Ministry handed over a petition to the Chief Regional Officer Ludmilla Doeses, which condemns the use and abuse of drugs and alcohol.

The overall theme of the Young People's Ministry is “Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for believers in speech, in life, love, in faith and in purity”. The young people of ELCRN from all over Namibia had a convention which started on Friday, 30 November and ended on Sunday, in Swakopmund under the theme “The Seed Love”. The Youth Pastor Iyaloo Hamalwa, during the petition hand over said: “We have taken a decision to educate our youth through the means of information sharing via a peaceful demonstration. Our ultimate goal is to equip the youth to participate, function and develop in the society so that they feel empowered to make decisions that are healthy for themselves and for others”. The youth of ELCRN say they want to see that the courts give severe sentences to those caught with drugs. They wish to have bars closed on public holidays, more police patrols to ensure that children who are under the age of 18 are not in bars or used as bar attendants at liquor outlets. They would like the government of Namibia to ban the use of alcohol on the streets. They also requested that the Erongo Regional Governor have the bars closed at 20:00 during week days and no liquor shops should be allowed to operate on Sundays. “The government should draw up a legislation to empower parents to have control over their growing children”, said Hamalwa as she was reading the petition which she handed over to Doeses on behalf of the Erongo regional Governor Cleophas Mutjavikua. “Youth development is the cornerstone of any development. We in the Erongo Region takes Youth Development in a very serious light. Your views are valuable as you do so to shape your future. The youth in Namibia seems to face massive challenges and experience problems such as substance use e.g alcohol and drug abuse, violence, rape, child trafficking, prostitution, etc., leading to the lives of many young people being destroyed.”, said Doeses as she welcomed the youth to Erongo region. She advised the youth to take charge of their lives and to build the Namibian house on the high moral values they (youth) seek to see.

The current declining oil prices are mainly caused by a global slowdown of the economy due to continuing uncertainties surrounding the global trade system, which is not good news for Namibia. Slower global economic growth results in lower demand for basic commodities and hence lower prices, which hits commodity exporters such as Namibia. Furthermore, lower oil prices will slow down the recovery of the Angolan economy and subsequently the Angolan demand for Namibian goods and services.
Furthermore, lower fuel prices should not result in complacency on the part of consumers, producers and policy makers to embark on more fuelefficient transport and production equipment and, moreover, move to electrical vehicles and equipment. Such a shift will not only reduce Namibia's dependency on oil imports, but support our Growth at Home Strategy by harnessing our own natural resources such as solar, wind, biomass and wave power to generate electricity. Policy makers need to take the initiative to design
a joint strategy to promote the use (and production) of electrical vehicles not only in Namibia, but in the southern African region. Namibia and the southern African region at large are rich in lithium and cobalt, the main inputs into the production of lithiumion batteries that power electrical vehicles. Instead of exporting the minerals as raw materials, policy makers need to design a strategy to add value to the minerals and produce the batteries in the region.”

60 years old.......... Newspaper celebrates six decades of reporting on harbour developments
The port of Walvis Bay finds itself in very exciting times right now. The inauguration and commissioning is around the corner of the container terminal on reclaimed land in the port of Walvis Bay. As part of our 60th anniversary, we look back at some key milestones in the history of the development of the port of Walvis Bay. The information contained in this article is extract from Namib Times as we brought our readers port news over a period of six decades. The development of the container terminal on reclaimed land also brought marvelous advancements to the port. Most notably the giant ship-to-shore cranes which towers of the port and a passenger liner berth only a stone's throw from the Walvis Bay Waterfront. The massive bulk liquid fuel terminal also nears completion north of the naval base. By huge underground fuel pipelines the liquid fuel terminal is linked to a giant tank farm of Namcor and we can state without hesitation: Walvis Bay is home to mega infrastructure. Mega infrastructure that will keep Walvis Bay relevant as the importand export hub between world markets and economies of the SADC. The history of Walvis Bay and that of the port of Walvis Bay and the fishing industry have been inter-twined. It is most likely to remain that way. An extract: “In the mid1800's there were no regular services to and from Walvis Bay. Ships
had to be chartered to transport travelers and goods to and from Walvis Bay”, Nils Bruzelius writes in his book titled: How The Port Of Walvis Bay became Namibian”. Ship traffic was mostly generated by whaling vessels and guano harvesting activities. At one point in time meat was shipped between Cape Town and Saint Helena Island via Walvis Bay. Walvis Bay was a small settlement. Nothing else than a bay providing shelter for ships laying at anchor. By 1857 a regular mail service was established through the port. By 1870, according to Bruzelius, a schooner made regular calls from Cape Town. A ships agent was established here which also handled the mail. At the time the Matchless Mine in the Khomas Hochland produced lucrative shipments of copper which were shipped from Walvis Bay. Despite, it was not until 1904 that the first wooden jetty was constructed in Walvis Bay. It was suitable for smaller boats, but larger ships had to anchor in the bay and was offloaded and re-supplied
by lighters (small supply boats). A tramway led from the jetty to the settlement and beyond to Plum east of Walvis Bay (18km long). The wagons were at first hauled by mules and replaced in 1899 by a steam locomotive. The tramway was not viable and abandoned by 1905. The last locomotive (nicknamed Hope) that worked on this line can be seen today displayed in front of the railway station
in 6th Street. At the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, work had to be halted on the construction of an iron jetty (262m of the total length of 640m were completed). Walvis Bay was a landing point for Union of South African troops (they landed here an Christmas Day 1914). The South Africans moved swiftly to occupy Swakopmund. It was the first war actions of what would become the South West Africa Campaign and the defeat of the German Forces by May 1915. It was the end of German colonial rule. By 1927 the Rooibank water scheme was established and Walvis Bay now had water supply for the visiting ships. Before that all water was hauled here by ship from Cape Town.
In the same period the first three wharfs (current day wharfs 1 to 3) were constructed (457m long) and the dredging of the entrance channel took place. Reporting on port matters was a priority for Namib Times, right from its first edition on 5 December 1958 to the current edition that hit the streets yesterday. As we embark on the journey of the seventh decade, we will continue to keep our readers updated with port news. Throughout every edition we had a port log (it was first known as “Ship Movements”). The first major development we reported on was the extension of the wharf from the original 457m, with a further 396m to make provision for what we still have today as berths number one to eight.

Fishing industry’s foundation vested in pilchard fishery There could possibly only be a few Walvis Bay residents with no ties to Walvis Bay’s pilchard industry of yesteryear. Can you still recall these names and can you still recall the names of these managers? A list of factories established in Walvis Bay between 1950 and 1968 (with their managers). This period is seen as the period in which a formal fishery was established at Walvis Bay. It laid the foundations for today's Namibian fishing industry at Walvis Bay (Source: The History of the Port and Settlement of Walvis Bay 1878 to 1978 (Wilken & Fox). The first edition of the namib times was on the street in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay on the morning of 5 December 1958. Initially it was published only on Fridays. The newspaper was first printed in Swakopmund and later printing operations moved to Walvis Bay. In 1985 the newspaper acquired its very own printing machines. Between 1985 and mid-2017 the newspaper was printed at the namib times head office in Sam Nujoma Avenue. Since August 2017 the newspaper is printed by Word Press Namibia in Windhoek. “Eduard Bohlen” and Parow’s special link Probably the most famous shipwreck along the Namibian coast is that of the “Eduard Bohlen”. The ship ran aground in the early 1900's in thick fog at Conception Bay, some 80 miles south of Walvis Bay. But what does this shipwreck and the “Eduard Bohlen” was a certain Captain suburb Parow in Cape Town have in Parow. This shipwreck was the end of common? We asked this question in our Captain Parow's sea career and he bought edition of the Namib Times, 6 March a poultry farm outside Cape Town that he 1970? named after himself. 120 Years of the mailship The Spanish sailor’s missing era fades into history glass eye.... 27 September 1977: “The date set down to terminate the 120 years old history of the mail ship between Cape Town and Southampton”, Shipping and Dock News - Namib Times 8 July 1977. Due to her strategic positioning as port on the West coast of Africa, many a mail ship had called here over many decades. Albeit, it was the time of the lighters and these vessels anchored out in the bay. The lighters carried passengers and supplies between the port and the vessels. Note: the last mail ship to call at Walvis Bay was in fact the world’s last remaining mail ship, the Royal Mail Ship (RMS) St. Helena.
RMS St. Helena made regular passages between Cape Town and the British Overseas Territory (BOT) of Saint Helena in die South-Atlantic via Walvis Bay. Walvis Bay was later also cut out from the schedule. RMS Saint Helena undertook her last voyage between Cape Town and the Island in January this year. Saint Helena has its own international airport now and a regular air service runs between Johannesburg and Saint Helena.
Namib Times, 14 March 1972: “Why would a Spanish seaman in dark glasses scratch in the sand and dust round the custom's control point at the 13th Rd entrance to the Walvis Bay harbour? Could he be possibly looking for a glass eye? Yesterday morning a very worriedly looking Spanish seaman wearing dark glasses was spotted by customs officials groping round in the sand and dust near the check-point at the entrance to the harbour. After a while they became so intrigued that they asked this man what he was looking for. He lifted his dark glasses and true enough he was missing an eye. He claimed he had lost his glass eye at the gate the evening before. However, the cleaner had been around earlier and swept and tidied the place. So they all moved off to the rubbish bin nearby and on scratching through the contents lo, and behold, came across the Spanish seaman's missing glass eye”
Syncrolift officially opened in 1974.... The Minister of Economic Affairs Mr. S.L. Muller officially opened the Walvis Bay syncrolift on 22 February 1974.
Who could have anticipated this problem at a public swimming pool? The official opening of Swakopmund's modern, R830 000 indoor swimming complex brought the municipality one problem they never expected. Namib Times reports on 28 January 1972 that officials had to be employed by the Municipality “to keep an eye on bathers' moral behaviour”. The report states: “Taking measures to combat definite signs of the new era of sexual permissiveness getting a grip in Swakopmund's brand new out-of-the-box R830 000 swimming pool complex, are officials who have been appointed to supervise the swimming pool are having their work cut out......” We quote a spokesperson: “The very moment
horseplay starts between the sexes, I know that trouble is afoot, and I stop it immediately otherwise it can reach a stage where both participating members can be lawfully charged for public indecency. “The provocative bikini's some of the girls wear are no help at all”, growled this spokesperson the newspaper interviewed.
Three local golfers beat Gary Player Three Walvis Bay residents could boast in 1975 that they won Gary Player in a golf competition. These three players are Willie Prosser (Sr), Clive Crockett and L.S. Geyer, all three members of the Walvis Bay Golf Club. In December 1974 Gary Player challenged anyone to take him on in a single-Stableford match in aid of the Southern Cross Fund. A wellknown Insurance Company hosted the competition. More than 8000 golfers accepted the challenge and of those 85, succeeded in beating Player. The three mentioned Walvis Bay golfers were winners as well as a certain Mrs. A. Hugo of Okahandja and a Mr. J.G. Coetzee of Gobabis. Namib Times, 15 January 1991: “The South African Minister of Foreign Affairs Pik Botha has informed the American Government that South African harbours and bases will be placed at the Allieds' disposal in the event of a war between the “free world” and Iraq. That is if the deadline for the withdrawal of Iraq from Kuwait is not honoured.

Murdered in Mauratania
Letter from her late husband Talk about the bizarre incidents caused by late arrival of surface mail. In our edition 29 April 1980, a similar incident was reported in Namib Times. Mrs Baby Stevens of Walvis Bay received a letter from Mauritania, from her husband Willie. What would have been a very pleasant surprise actually lead to immense sadness, as Mr. Stevens was murdered in Mauritania by terrorists on 4 October 1978. It was aboard the fishing vessel “Zuiderster 8”. Several other crew members were also killed in the same attack. Mr Stevens wrote this letter shortly before his tragic death, and it took the letter 18 months to reach Walvis Bay and his beloved wife.

“TV” “T.V.”.Probably the shortest headline ever to be published in the Namib Times and we did so on the front page of our edition Friday 26 March 1982. We announced that from that evening television test programs would be broadcasted in Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Henties Bay and also Arandis for a period of one month.
Always ready to serve the public with every new opportunity, the Namib Times published the first television program schedule on Tuesday 30 March 1982. We unfortunately also had to spoil everyone's excitement in the process of fulfilling our role to inform. In the edition 2 April 1982 we reminded the public tv-licenses are payable as from 1 April 1982. In our edition of Friday 30 April of the same year, Namib Times also had to ask the big question: “Is it the effect of T.V.?” We made reference to one of the shortest Town Council Meetings ever conducted the evening before. “No doubt bearing in mind the Weir-Moore fight to be screened at half past seven last night, the regular monthly meeting of the Walvis Bay Town Council skipped through the agenda to last only half an hour”, the front-page article is quoted. The Rotary Club of Walvis Bay hosted a forum in June 1982, discussing and highlighting the social- and family pitfalls associated with television. In the same edition Namib Times quoted Professor Wynand Malan, Chairman of the SABC's Board where he predicted satellite television and multi-channel television “within five years”.
“Maria van Riebeeck” first submarine on Syncrolift
Ever thought how far a submarine would penetrate Walvis Bay? Well on the morning of 23 November 1981 the South African submarine “Maria van Riebeeck was lifted onto the Walvis Bay Syncrolift for repairs and maintenance. It was the historic first time a submarine had been taken out of the water here. ·Several South African naval submarines visited Walvis Bay over the years, most of whose visits had been briefly mentioned by the Namib Times. Note: after Walvis Bay’s re-integration in 1994, no South African naval submarine called at Walvis Bay. The first to do so again was in 2009 during a joint-military exercise of SADC forces at Walvis Bay. In September 2009 this Class 209 submarine of the SA Navy spent days off Walvis Bay Here the tourist boat Kalina is seen alongside chatting to the submarine crew.
“I now declare Arandis open” Buildings are inaugurated, ships are launched and people installed in positions of honour. Have you ever heard of officially opening a town? Remarkable but true. Arandis was officially opened on 22 June 1979. The Chairman of Rössing Group, Mr. R.S. Walker (MBE), unveiled a plaque marking the official opening of the Arandis Township. Arandis today is a bustling town, geared for investment to diversify its micro-economy and end its dependence on uranium mines in the area, of which Rössing and Husab are the biggest.

Christo de Jager’s The year of “Kubus” plights bear fruit.... Veteran local authority and national politican Mr. Christo de Jager already appealed in 1983 for unified action in managing the coastal environment. Moreover, also in 1983 he called for the proclamation of a nature reserve in the enclave of Walvis Bay. Mr de Jager’s words bore fruit many decades later, as Namibia today boasts a coastline that is protected from the Kunene River to the Orange River and two trans-frontier parks, one in Southwestern Angola and South Africa’s Northern Cape that link up with our Namibian parks.
Did You Know?
On 19 January 1903 a public meeting took place in Swakopmund, to discuss the foundation of a volunteer fire brigade. Home owners, as well as owners of business premises, were invited and everyone was requested to make contributions, calculated on the total value of their properties. That is according to an article by former mayor of Swakopmund Clr. Jörg Henrichsen in namib times in 1986, to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the Swakopmund Fire Brigade.
The pioneer of dolphin cruises
The year 1984 will go down in the history for dozens of Walvis Bay residents (and residents across Namibia and South Africa for that matter) as the year of the kubus collapse! Can you recall the “vrotmelk” scheme, or better known as the “Kubus” project. The financial losses many suffered when the scheme collapsed? Namib Times 16 October 1984. Note: On our 60th anniversary the only positives we can take from Kubus are: the sale of tumbler glasses must have been good during Kubus’ life span. After the collapse, many households had an oversupply of tumbler glasses for decades to come.
Dead Sea resort for Walvis Bay
There were very ambitious plans for tourism development in the Walvis Bay area. Over many decades Namib Times reported on these dreams and plans. This particular proposal takes the cake though - edition Tuesday, 6 August 1985. “Dead Sea Resort for Walvis Bay: The Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Mr. John Wiley explained in a letter to the Minister of State Development, Mr. Chris Heunis, that a resort similar to the Dead Sea Resort in Israel could be developed for Walvis Bay. Minister Wiley explained consideration could be given to fill an underground area with salt water of a high concentration and develop the surface as a resort. It was further explained in the letter from Minister Wiley to Minister Heunis the surface area could be covered with dune sand to ensure an attractive surface and plants and trees could keep the sand stable. “The effect of floating on the salty water would have the same effect as floating on the high concentrated salt water of the Dead Sea”, the letter is quoted in the report also explaining this would be a valuable way to attract tourism.
Langstrand Restaurant an idea of a certain Mr Henning Mr. Ottmar Leippert (on the picture above standing to the left) bought his first ski-boat for marine tours in 1989. The late Mr. Ottmar Leippert and his spouse Merrilyn were the founders of Levo Tours. The first boat was named after Mrs. Leippert. Levo Tours operated from Langstrand at first. Mr. Leippert is seen on the picture above celebrating the naming of the vessel with close friend Alfred Fuller.
“The establishment of a restaurant at Langstrand by private enterprise got the green light from the Walvis Bay town council on Wednesday night during the regular monthly meeting. The applicant is a certain Mr. Henning” - namib times 27 February 1987. Note 1: the first family to live at Langstrand in their newly completed home was Ottmar and Merrilyn Leippert. They slept the first night in their newly completed house on 1 October 1990. Note 2: Who can remember Nelis Dreyer’s famous Jetty Steak (1kg) at Langstrand Restaurant?

Resolution 435:
“Resolution 435” was the dominating political factor in 1989 and not surprising enjoying much editorial attention in the Namib Times. In the Namibian political arena the implementation of Resolution 435 paved the way for the first democratic election later that year to elect a Constituent Assembly for Namibia. The Constituent Assembly was tasked with the development of a Constitution for the future Independent Republic of Namibia.
Elections 1989: Swapo wins the Constituent Assembly Elections by a 57,33 % majority and the Democratic Turnhalle Alliance (DTA) became the Official Opposition attracting 28,55 % of the vote. Namibia’s current serving Head of State Dr Hage Geingob elected the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly. The Namibian Constitution is adopted on 9 February 1990. The date for Namibian Independence is set for 21 March 1990.
Independence At the strike of the clock at midnight on 21 March 1990 Namibia gained its Independence from South Africa. At that very moment the South African flag was lowered on Namibian soil for the last time and the Namibian flag was proudly hoisted. Witnessing this key moment in history were then South African State President F.W. de Klerk and Namibia’s Dr Sam Nujoma who became Namibia’s first democratically elected Head of State. Re-integration of Walvis Bay Walvis Bay was re-integrated as Namibian territory on 1 March 1994, less than two months before South Africa became a multi-racial democracy on 27 April 1994. The re-integration ceremony took place at the Kuisebmond stadium and on the picture above Namibia’s Head of State Dr Nujoma arriving for the proceedings which too took on the form of a formal lowering of the South African flag and subsequent flying of the Namibian flag.

We catch up on the life of the coast’s “820 grams miracle” Sharlien Tjambari On Tuesday 13 June 2000 a baby was born at Swakopmund's Cottage Private Hospital (today known as the Cottage MediClinic). Babies are born every day, so what is so special about the birth of this particular baby? The answer to this question lies in the edition of namib times, 23 June 2000: the baby weighed only 820g and was the tiniest ever born at the coast. What makes this more of a miracle is the fact that this tiny baby survived against all the odds and grew into a strong young man. With the newspaper celebrating its 60th anniversary tomorrow (5 December) we traced this young man who made the effort to travel all the way from Keetmanshoop in Southern Namibia for an interview and for…. updated pictures for the only picture we have on record of him shows him in an incubator in the Cottage Hospital's paediatric ward's intensive care unit: “Wonder Baby”, Gangan Gorren Gomachab was born on 13 June 2000 at Cottage Private Hospital and weighed 820g at birth. The baby was delivered by Dr Matti Kimberg, a well-known gynaecologist. Gangan was the first ever wonder baby to be born at the Coast. Gangan was born at six months and kept in an incubator for close to one month before his parents, Lisema Alma Gomachas and Robert Gomachab,
could take their little wonder bundle home. “We never had the opportunity to hold him in our hands on the day of his birth. I had to wait for three months to hold him in my hands, because he was very, very tiny. After he was discharged from hospital, we had to travel to Swakopmund every week for his check-ups. We were living at Usakos back then, recalled Gangan's father, Robert Gomachab, in the recent interview. Premature babies face many complications, but they are strong and natural survivors. Robert Gomachab described his son's upbringing as normal one. Apart from the first months after his premature birth, the rest of his upbringing was uncomplicated. Gangan had no further health-related issues, explained his father. namib times also contacted Dr Kimberg who instantly recalled this special birth. He also expressed his wish to meet Gangan at some point in time. “In 2000 at the Cottage hospital the survival of Gangan was a major achievement for us. It was a wonderful team effort. It is exactly why I still carry out obstetrics (deliver babies) at my age, as I cannot stop to marvel at the wonders of life when I hold a new
born in my hands”, said Dr Kimberg who several years ago relocated to Windhoek. Adding, babies born with a disability or fighting to survive prematurity need extra love and affection from both parents. “I would love to see Gangan again, give him a big hug and talk about his plans and his life. A window opened to me in my childhood (age 12 at the time) that probably determined my course in life”. “My parents were missionaries in the then Natal, at a mission hospital called Ekupumuleni. Circumstances allowed me to see a birth in a Zulu kraal delivered by a nurse/midwife. I wasn't supposed to look, but how do you tell that to a 12-year-old? I have never lost that sense of wonder”, concluded Kimberg. Gangan was told the story of his birth and he was shown photographs, but he couldn't believe it was him. “I kept on saying it wasn't true and that was a “gogga” and not me. It never had any negative impact on me. I am excited actually every time I am told the story, said Gangan during the recent interview. Gangan's was raised in Swakopmund and started his first grade at Swakopmund Primary School (SPS). He attended at SPS up to Grade
7. The family then moved to Keetmanshoop where he continues with his secondary education. He has 6 siblings and says once he completes his school career, he would like to pursue studies in the field of Mining Engineering. He too looks forward to meet Dr Kimberg.

17 August 1962: Mr. Cyril Fernandez was the first coloured to obtain a plot in Narraville to establish a hotel. Less than two months later the Langenhoven couple were handed keys to their brand new home in Narraville. They became the first homeowners in this new suburb. Namib Times 5 July 1963: The former resident Magistrate of Walvis Bay Major K.R. Thomas in his tenure between 1920 and1925 discovered the town was still legally under martial law since the outbreak of World War I. It was immediately revoked.
The Pelican Point Lighthouse was constructed in 1912 The Pelican Point peninsula is growing by about 18 metres a year. The start of the build-up of the sand bar must have occurred about 700 A.D. It is estimated that about a million cubic metres of sand is transported northwards along the west coast every year by wave action on the beaches to the south of Walvis Bay. A former Regional Harbour Engineer at Walvis Bay, Mr. Fran Malan, who also served as the Deputy Town Engineer with the Municipality of Walvis Bay at one point in time revealed this in an article in the eighties in an issue of Harbour News. Under the heading: “Walvis Bay's Sand Bar Still Growing”, Mr. Malan posed the question how did Walvis Bay's natural breakwater come into being? This sand bar, he wrote, extends nine kilometers from the mainland into the sea. The bar varying in width from 500 to 1500 meters protects the commercial harbour, the fishing harbour and offers a potential for a harbour with at least 50 additional berths in the bay. Malan’s article was used in Namib Times at an earlier occasion in its regular Beachy Bits and Pieces, written by the founding editor Paul Vincent.

The Nedbank Desert Dash is an iconic marketing tool for Namibia
With the stage set for one of the most grueling endurance events globally through 369 kilometers of the formidable Namib Desert, many eagerly anticipate the profusion of spillover benefits the Nedbank Desert Dash brings annually. More than 1 000 Dashers are ready to conquer the oldest desert in the world in the course of just 24 hours, and thousands more are on stand-by to support and greet riders, as they tiredly but triumphantly cross the finish line at Swakopmund on 8 December. The Swakopmund municipality says the coastal town is proud of the role it plays in this prestigious event. Moreover, locals greatly value the multiple perks that come with it. “Each year most of the hotels and guesthouses are fully booked, including the bungalows managed by the municipality,” Aili Gebhardt, Swakopmund municipal spokesperson, says. Around N$1,5 million was generated during the event last year for the small coastal town, she adds, as well as several temporary jobs. Additionally, the event casts a bright spotlight on the town and Namibia as a whole, promoting it as an attractive tourism destination. The stark conditions and the thrill of finishing the tough course is a boon for the tourism industry that has long worked to promote Namibia as a top-notch adventure tourism hotspot. Gitta Paetzold, Hospitality Association of Namibia (HAN) executive officer, says the Nedbank Desert Dash has “truly become one of the most important sporting and adventure tourism events on the Namibian calendar.” She says the tourism industry, in an effort to promote domestic, regional and international tourism, has for long aimed to identify key events in Namibia to help lure local and foreign visitors. “The Nedbank Desert Dash fits this model perfectly, as it is an outstanding race that no only attracts local cyclists, but has over the years attracted increasing numbers of international competitors as is proven by the 2018 entry numbers, with people from more than 14 countries taking part.” More than 60 per cent of the just over 1 000 entrants daring to tackle the route are Namibians, joined by 311 South African's and 69 cyclists from another 12 countries, including Germany, Austria, Canada, The USA, France and Luxembourg. “Crossing one of Namibia's most specta-
cular landscapes linking the capital to the coast, the Nedbank Desert Dash is the perfect opportunity to showcase one of the country's most rugged, soulful, inspiring and liberating terrains,” Paetzold points out. Paetzold adds that the Nedbank Desert Dash is known far and wide as one of the most challenging day-races across the globe and is undoubtedly a 'must-do' event for every serious cyclist. “And, coverage of this event helps to market the country's uniqueness.” He exclaimed. It is estimated the event pumps at least N$20 million of additional revenue into Namibia's economy, from flights, car rentals, health services, and other tourism related activities. Gebhardt agrees that in addition to the surge of visitors descending on the town, the Dash promotes the area as an “irresistible holiday destination”, which whets the appetite to experience more parts of the country, and to spread the word back home. “This in turn, brings in foreign currency, creates more jobs, helps to develop our town and others and helps us to preserve a diverse culture and the environment,” she concludes. Gernot de Klerk, head of marketing and communication at Nedbank Namibia, says unique characteristics of the dash, including the landscape and rugged route, combined with the quality and professional work of the race organisers, has helped shape the Nedbank Desert Dash into the global magnet it is today. “Through the success and growth of events such as the Nedbank Desert Dash, Namibia has now become a popular destination of premier events.” As Namibia proudly celebrates the broad and tangible impact of the Dash, the ultimate payoff is for the cycling community itself as well as the sport. On the other hand it was Clive's first during a Destination Swakopmund Golf Day and what a hole to achieve this on Number 16. Well done to both of you. As always with SAGES everyone went home a winner after a great day of golf and some good laughs with everyone. Wednesday 28 November Weiss Hardware the long standing Rossmund sponsors was the sponsored of the competition that had a fantastic turnout - one of the largest fields this year – this led to a great buzz in the clubhouse and plenty of laughs. Saturday 1 December It was an excellent turnout for the 27 hole competition –the day started quite early for a Saturday - 11 o 'clock tee-off all from Number One – so quite a long day in the field/desert or on the course. The format was totally different from the norm which led to fun but also frustration – 9 holes Foursome Medal ; 9 holes Betterball Medal; 9 holes Scramble Drive Betterball Medal. The brains were twirling and many had no idea of their score after having reached the clubhouse. Not too worry George was at hand to sort out the results and officiate at prize-giving. Riverside Equestrian hosts jumping show Championships

Riverside Equestrian Centre will be hosting the Namibian Show Jumping Championships, Dressage and Inter-Club Challenge this coming weekend of the 7 - 9 December. Currently over 90 horses have been entered into the competition with riders from all over Namibia coming together to compete for the Championship title. According to Simone Kauert the show will also have a fancy dress / riding ability event in order to promote young and upcoming talent as well as a team event for grooms and riders. Sunday promises big excitement when all Namibian Clubs compete against each other in the Namibian Interclub challenge. The show will start from 08:00 till late. Coffee and lunch will be served with music in the evening.

The Namibia Ring Contact Fighting Arts International (NRCFAI) Kickboxing Academy held their second grading of the year at the Kickboxing Gym in Walvis Bay. The kickboxing grading exercise at RCFAI Kickboxing Academy was held to determine how students progress throughout the year. Belt grading systems are used by kickboxing clubs as a way to both inspire and demonstrate student's advancement in the sport. A white belt is given to a student as soon as he or she enrols at a kickboxing club. The student needs to perform all required tasks and pass a number of tests and drills to earn the next colour belt. The challenges and requirements depend on the kickboxing school. Some institutions also have levels within each grade. These show how much the trainee has im-
proved through the phases until he or she is ready to move on to the next grade. There are corresponding exercises, requirements, sparring matches and tests along the course to ensure that the trainee is wellequipped and is competent enough for the belt the trainee is wearing. A total of forty students took part in this year's grading, after which all students received a certificate and a belt, and walked out as proud champions in their own right. The RCFAI Kickboxing Academy has very high standards and the club is producing champions and maintaining exceptional standards. The support from parents at the event was phe-
nomenal and students inspired other youngsters to get more people involved in the sport. Throughout the event it became clear that the trademark of a true champion is to stay humble.
