Murder in Vineta Sharlien Tjambari

Four people were arrested within eighteen hours after the murder on Wednesday morning of 79-year old Rosvietha Sieglinde Strzelecki in her home in Swakopmund's Vineta suburb. Two men entered the house at around 08:30 on Tuesday at 33 Richthofen Street and attacked Strzelecki and her husband, Siegfried Paul Strzelecki (81). The couple was severely assaulted and tied up. The death of Strzelecki is directly linked to the injuries she sustained during the attack. The method of violence allegedly included strangulation. The Strzelecki-couple and their family are well known coastal residents and lived in Walvis Bay for some time when their house in Swakopmund was renovated. Their children own the Prima Schlachterei in Swakopmund. The spokesperson for the Namibian Police in Erongo, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu confirmed that the two suspects entered the house, presumably using a duplicate key. The suspects then entered the room where the deceased was at the time and allegedly grabbed her by the throat and hit her head against a wall. The deceased's husband was in another part of the house and was alerted by a noise. He went to investigate and encountered one of the attackers whom he immediately recognised as a person who conducted renovations at the couple's home earlier. The second suspect wore a mask. The masked attacker demanded cash from Strzelecki, only meters from where his wife was fighting for her life in a gravely injured state or might have already died. The suspects then tried to open the safe with a key which the couple missed for some time. They had changed the safe's lock in the meantime. The officials allegedly sprayed tear gas into the club, assaulted members of the public and threatened two people with rape, should they not hand over video footage that was taken of the events. Police assault The reputation of law enforcement in Swakopmund has been dealt a blow over the weekend, after members of the town's community policing, security officials and members of the Namibian Police assaulted a young man at a local night club. As a result of the assault the man suffered a torn retina to one of his eyes. His friend was also assaulted, including a blow to the side of his head by a fist and that whilst he was already handcuffed. The incident occurred at around 03:00 on Sunday at the Vintage night club. Some fifteen people were still at the establishment, although the music was already turned off and no alcohol sold, as it was already past the curfew allowed by the club's liquor license. "It was a relaxed atmosphere. I sat and had a chat with a friend and suddenly there was a commotion as people with reflective jackets, uniforms and even guns entered the place. The air suddenly

filled with teargas, prompting us all to leave the place in a hurry as our eyes were burning and we could hardly breath", one of the victims explained this week. Outside the club we asked the Police why they used pepper spray on us, whereafter we were simply told they teargassed the premises not the people. safe, the attackers turned their attention to Strzelecki, assaulted him and tied him up. They left the key in the safe, went to the sitting room where they took one Huawei cell phone valued at N$8000, the remote control of the house's alarm system, a pair of sandals of the deceased and cash of N$1000, explained Iikuyu. Strzelecki managed to loosen himself from the ropes and ran out of the house where a neighbour spotted him. Strzelecki was bleeding and was also seriously injured. The police arrived within minutes. Mrs Strzelecki was found in the room where she was attacked and was pronounced dead at the scene. Strzelecki was taken to the Cottage Hospital where he was treated for his injuries. He is in a stable condition. Mrs Strzelecki's body was taken to the Walvis Bay police mortuary for post-mortem examination which will be used as evidence in the murder trial. It did not take long for the police to figure out the identity of the man who previously conducted renovations at the Strzelecki home. With a name, an arrest soon followed. He had the items stolen during the attack still in his possession. Hours later the police arrested two more suspects they believe in some way assisted the Strzelecki-attackers. The fourth suspect's mask did not help much in trying to conceal his identity. He was arrested at 03:00 in Swakopmund's DRC area. All four suspects' names are known to the media, but cannot be published until their first court appearance.

Burger is overheard telling this person to back down before he "loses his temper". Another part of the video shows Burger getting physical with one of the other patrons who questioned the legality of them entering a premises in the manner in which they did it, and then using pepper spray on the people. Things started to turn for the worst when the group of law enforcers were accused by the discontent patrons that their actions were unlawful. They told the patrons to leave, but the young man who ended up being seriously assaulted told them his vehicle was boxed in by two security vehicles. The group of law enforcers refused to give way and it was then that one of the female law enforcers realised the whole altercation is being recorded on video by cell phone. They stormed the man who was recording and he was hit at the back of the head. He nonetheless threw the cell phone to his friend [the one who ended up severely assaulted] to avoid them taking away the phone. The law enforcers tackled the man to the ground and allegedly assaulted him. When this friend who did the recording tried to come to his rescue he was handcuffed and told he is now under arrest. "Burger walked up to me, went behind me and squeezed the handcuffs so tight that I later had to beg them just to loosen it. They refused. As they were arguing with my friend, to delete the video from his phone, Burger walked up to me and hit me with the fist on the side of my head. I was handcuffed and could not avoid the blow", one of

the victims explained. He was forced into the back of a police van and driven to the Mondesa police station. His friend was ordered into the passenger seat of his vehicle and a security official drove his vehicle to the same police station. An armed policeman sat on the backseat. At the police station Burger and the others started to intimidate them in order to have the video deleted. "We became very scared when we were threatened that we will be locked up and the inmates in the cell would then make "girlfriends" of us and our backsides will then be aching as a result". My friend handed them the pin number of the phone and a female officer [who was also at the scene] deleted the video and double checked if it has not been sent to someone on Whatsapp. We wanted to lay charges. We were refused. When we were told we can leave, we were also told we are not allowed to go to a hospital, despite my friend realising that he sustained a serious eye injury. Several vehicles escorted us to the Swakopmund bridge and we were told to go home [at Langstrand] and they don't want to see us in Swakopmund, it is alleged. The two victims returned to Swakopmund on Sunday and a general practitioner has already completed the necessary forms to confirm the injuries they sustained. An information technology specialist managed to retrieve the deleted video. The two victims were also interviewed by a police officer on Monday and a case was opened [CR52/07/2017]. Their statements were taken and the investigation will now take its course to determine what charges are to be laid against all the law enforcement personnel that were involved.

The two buildings will now be joined for the purposes of the project. "The idea is to have the ground floor and the first floor partly completed by April 2018. The hotel seg-ment will probably only be constructed in 2019 as a second phase of the entire project. An overjoyed Routh explained he submitted three entries for the competition, and was very excited and overwhelmed when he received the call as one of the winners. Pick n Pay Swakopmund's Customer Care Clerk, Magreth Ganases explained the competition started on 29 May and was supposed to end on 17 July. However, the closing date for entries was extended to 26 July, to allow more people to participate. According to Ganases all 22 PnP outlets countrywide offered the competition. Customers had to spend N$200 or more at any Pick n Pay store and then they had to SMS their name and receipt number to a special SMS number (76000), in order to qualify for the draw. The competition was open to all Namibians. Deloitte Namibia made sure the selection of the winners was fair and transparent. Bystander rescues man from drowning Piquet Jacobs A bystander, Daniel Pretorius, was quick to react when realising a man struggling to swim. The 40-yearold Walvis Bay resident found himself in trouble while swimming in the Langstrand vicinity on Saturday afternoon. Pretorius immediately swam out to assist the distressed swimmer and brought him to shore. Swakopmund Municipal Fire and Rescue Services, as well as E-Med Rescue 24 assisted the patient before he was transported to the Welwitschia Hospital for further management and care.

The incident took place about 25km before Arandis on Sunday, when the driver of a green VW Caddy pick-up lost control of the vehicle after a tyre blowout. Auguste Hoebes (68) died at the scene, while the other occupants sustained minor injuries and were treated at Swakopmund State Hospital.

The Namibian Police arrested two young men who are believed to have stabbed Heardly Sondag Seibeb (25) to death with a knife in Mondesa last Wednesday. Allois Gurirab, also known as Figo (20), was arrested on Monday in Mondesa and his alleged accomplice, Isaskar Uiseb also known as Easy (21), was arrested on Tuesday morning at the Okombahe Resettlement area in Okombahe. A NamPol spokesperson confirmed the arrests and explained Uiseb was recently released on bail on a stock theft case at Omaruru. Seibeb was stabbed to death on Wednesday evening between 22:00 and 23:00 at Hanganeni suburb. The deceased and his two friends (one of them a security officer) were allegedly on their way to a friend's shack. When they arrived at the shack, which is next to Hanganeni School, they found two suspects consuming alcohol next to the friend's shack. They confronted the suspects who responded by attacking Seibeb and his companions by throwing them with stones. In the course of the altercation Seibeb sustained two stab wounds and collapsed and died shortly thereafter.

Joint law enforcement project nets 81 drivers with outstanding warrants of arrest The 4th Joint Law Enforcement Operation that was last week carried out on sections of the TransKalahari Corridor by officials of Namibia, Botswana and South Africa was described as a huge success by the Ministry of Works and Transport. Trucks were mainly targeted. Officials had a zerotolerance approach to even the smallest unlawful conduct and managed to arrest 81 drivers who had warrants of arrest issued against them for failure to pay traffic fines and failure to attend traffic court hearings. The operation was themed "Unlocking Tr a d e R e l a t i o n s between Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa and Beyond". The Trans-Kalahari Corridor stretches between Walvis Bay, via Botswana to Gauteng in South Africa, hence the three countries simultaneous involvement in this annual law enforcement project. According to the Ministry of Works and Transport's Head Communications Officer, Julius Shihepo Ngweda, a total of 1301 trucks and vehicles were inspected. The drivers were 1096 Namibian drivers, 76 South African and two from Botswana. “All drivers were tested for alcohol. Of those, 260 drivers tested negative and eight tested positive" he explained. Other violations recorded: 13 worn out tyres, 13 cracked windscreens, nine unlicensed vehicles, 19 drivers driving without driving licenses, 16 road trans-

port violations and two drivers were arrested on drink and driving charges. Ngweda further said

many of the nonNamibians arrested were also not complying with Namibian immigration laws.

Park & Wash Car guards in Swakopmund have started a new trend, using parking bays as carwash stations in the CBD area. This particular car was washed in front of Shoe Palace (Klimas Building in Swakopmund). A Swakopmund resident expressed her concern, stating that the guards are unapproachable as they become very aggressive and use foul language. "Will the Swakopmund Municipality please do something about these guards and remove them from the CBD as they just hang in front of shops, smelling bad and harass clients entering shops."

Ya Toivo’s legacy honoured by vessel renaming

Tunacor Fisheries gave notice recently it intends to change the name of its trawler Katuka (pictured above is the vessel in a pictured dated 2007) to Tatekulu Andimba Toivo ya Toivo. Ya Toivo died on 9 June this year and was the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tunacor. The renaming is the company's way too honour his legacy. Ya Toivo was a Second World War veteran, liberation struggle icon and veteran post-Independence Namibian politician. Angry anglers given free permit for one month The first cracks appeared in the Ministry of Fisheries' recent announcement that recreational angling permits will in future cost N$50 per day or N$1500 per month. The Ministry issued a group of unhappy anglers with a month permit for free yesterday, after the anglers vented their frustrations with the situation yesterday during a meeting with the Deputy Director of Resource Management at the National Marine Information and Research Centre (NatMIRC) in Swakopmund, Dr Chris Bartholomae. The group of anglers assembled at the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resource's regional headquarters in Swakopmund on Monday, to show their concern about the new N$1500 per month recreational angling permit now in place. Swakopmund resident electrocuted by power generator A 28-year-old man died in Mondesa's Matutura location on Sunday after being electrocuted by a power generator. Timotheus Liepke reportedly connected electrical wires from the power generator to a battery without an invertor as go-between. The invertor would have reduced the power flow to the battery, but in the absence of the device Liepke was electrocuted by the power generator's high output in ampere (amps). The incident took place at the deceased's residence. The next of kin of the deceased were informed. Diese Kurzgeschichte des englischer Schriftstellers, Essayisten und Journalisten George Orwell aus dem Jahre 1936 wird hier in vier Episoden wiedergegeben. Folge 1 ,,Als ich in einem Antiquariat arbeitete - das Leute, die nicht darin arbeiten müssen, so gern als eine Art Paradies schildern, in dem vornehme ältere Herren unermüdlich in alten, kalbsledergebundenen Folianten schmökern -, fiel mir am meisten auf, wie selten sich echte Büchernarren dort blicken liessen. Unser Laden besaß einen außergewöhnlich interessanten Bücherbestand; doch ich zweifle daran, ob auch nur zehn Prozent unserer Kunden ein gutes von einem schlechten Buch unterscheiden konnten. Snobs, die aus reinem Geltungsbedürfnis unbedingt Erstausgaben haben mussten, waren weit häufiger als Literaturliebhaber; noch häufiger allerdings kamen orientalische Studenten, die um billige Lehrbücher feilschten; und zu den häufigsten

Die eine ist jene abgetakelte, nach verschimmelten Brotkrusten riechende alte Vogelscheuche, die jeden Tag, manchmal sogar mehrmals am Tag, kommt und versucht, einem wertlose Bücher anzudrehen. Die andere ist jene Person, die enorme Mengen Bücher bestellt, die zu bezahlen sie nicht die geringste Absicht hegt. In unserem Laden verkauften wir nichts auf Kredit, legten aber Bücher zurück oder bestellten sie für Leute, die sie später abholen

Ford Sales Remain Resilient as July Swings Upward South African new vehicle sales showed encouraging year-on-year improvements in July 2017, and Ford was once again a key player in contributing to domestic volumes. Having sold a total of 5 561 vehicles locally, Ford claimed an 11.9% share of total industry sales for the month which ended on 46 719 units. The Silverton-based company currently holds 12.4% market share year-to-date. The Ford Ranger continues to be one of South Africa's top-selling vehicles overall and in the crucial light commercial vehicle (LCV) sector, recording 2 300 sales in July. Year-on-year, Ranger sales have increased by 4.4% thus far in 2017 compared to 2016. Notably, the locally assembled Ranger also achieved its second-best export volumes to date and its best figure for this year. A total

of 6 452 vehicles were shipped to markets in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. This made it the top light commercial vehicle (LCV) export in July, and the secondhighest export model overall as demand continues to grow from international markets. July 2017 was also a strong month for two of Ford's key compact offerings. The segmentdefining EcoSport notched up 851 sales, while the Fiesta ended on 998 units. Interest in Ford's muscular Mustang continues unabated, with a further 62 customers joining this exclusive club last month. "There was definitely a ray of sunshine in the new vehicle market during July 2017 with the overall industry sales improving by 4% compared to July last year. However, based in the current economic and political climate, and the lack of business and consumer confidence, we still expect the

industry to remain relatively flat for the balance of the year," said Neale Hill, Director of Marketing, Sales and Service for Ford Motor Company Sub-Saharan Africa Region. 2017 Nedbank Desert Dash to deliver world-class event

The allure of the Nedbank Desert Dash stretches far beyond the borders of Namibia, with return flights from Windhoek to Johannesburg or Cape Town. They have also between 30 and 40% of the participants traveling to Namibia with the specific intention of agreed to transport cyclists bikes free of charge, same as last year which is a great value add for our international cyclists. While the Nedbank Desert Dash may seem to some as just another cycling event, the reality is that its impacts are felt wider than just the cycling community. It is an event contributing handsomely to the national GDP, and by extension to the cause of economic progression as highlighted in Namibia's Fifth National Development Plan." This race remains to be one of the premier sporting events within the borders of Namibia. With its

international appeal, this elite race has once again attracted some high profile cyclists across the globe. "This year is no different, with cyclists grabbing up entries within seconds. We're sure to see 2016 Winner, Konny Looser, 2016 3rd position holder Jaco Davel (RSA) as well as 2016 6th place holder Dana Schutte (RSA) competing again this year. Rebecca Robsich, our 2016 female winner will be eagerly awaiting at the start line along with Anri Parker who took 3rd position last year. Our veteran cyclist Bill Jooste, aged 79 will soldier on to try and finish the grueling 369km within 24 hours after he missed the deadline with a few minutes in 2015 and 2016," says race organiser Leander Borg. In terms of prize money, race organisers have not made a call on the prize money as far as details are concerned, however the total value of prizes this year amounts to approximately N$ 350 000, with solo winners taking home at least N$ 32 000 each. Weekly Golf Report Last weekend we had the pleasure of having PSG as our sponsor for the day. The format was better ball. There were a good few prizes on the day and thanks to Niel Swanepoel and his team for their ongoing support. 34 players turned out and the winners on the day were Hannes Crafford and Linda Loots with a jolly fine 50 points, but winning the count out from Jans Stander and Juane Saunders. Koot Potgieter and Nardo Sardinha came in third on 49 points. Wouter van Wijk th and Kurt Brits were 4 on 48 points. Closest to the pins went to Nardo Sardinha and Kevin Wentzel while David Peake and Herman Neethling won the longest drives. The jackpot was won by Gordon Damster. The team from PSG added 2 500.00 to our lawn mower fund and thanks to them for this great donation. Amanda van Zyl represented PSG at the prize giving. The members draw last week was with the new members list and lo and behold there were nearly 60 members [including our honorary life members] that were on the list and what a sad time it was for Justine Grobler, as she left 1700 behind for someone this Friday at 18h00. Getting to be a nice amount so get your subs paid to be part of it. This weekend is lots of golf with Friday being the ROUND TABLE fundraiser golf day. A three ball alliance [1 score on the 3's, 2 scores on the 4's and all 3 scores on the 5's] and will probably be a shotgun start but please watch this space for more info. Sports and Music Festival in Usakos The 3rd edition of the annual Areva & Engen One Stop Usakos Sports festival will be held as from tomorrow and Sunday in Usakos. This tournament has been growing in popularity, and is currently known as one of the Mega Entertainment events in the Erongo region.

The first year of the tournament saw a total of 16 teams participated, whereas in 2016, there was a significant increase of 26 teams competing in the soccer edition of the festival, which was won by Speed Fire FC, from Omaruru, as they beat Coastal Lions on penalties during the final. Ms Christine De Klerk, the Communications Officer at Areva, said at the official launch of the event that "Sports, especially soccer, remains one of the vehicles that has moved many people out of the social-economic challenges and it is against that background that Areva Namibia, remains commited to assist communities, for the betterment of their livelihoods". Mr Hilifa Mbako, expressed his excitement and gratitude to that organisers of the event. At the same occasion, Ms Irene Simeon, Owner of Engen One Stop Usakos, thanked the community of Usakos for their behaviour and support during the event. She encouraged the locals to seize this opportunity, and venture into entrepreneurial activities, especially during the weekend of the festival. "Let us start planning on how best we can make business, and earn something in return from it." She expressed more gratitude to her staff members and the clients that are associating themselves with the Engen brands. "You are the driving forces that make Engen what it is today, and what it will be tomorrow. I really can't thank you enough". Mr D Van Wyk, the Deputy Mayor of the Usakos said at the launch that the Town Council is already contemplating on how to associate with the event as of 2018. He mentioned that this event is the pride of Usakos and that the town council are exploring the options and possibilities on how best the Council can associate them self with the event. The Deputy Mayor said the discussions are already in motion, as the Council are thinking of making the event bigger, Even if it would mean having an Trade and Enterprise Expo during the days leading up to the Sports and Entertainment Festival. He then handed over soccer equipment which was donated by, Hon Aksel Mwafangeyo the Mayor of Usakos in his personal capacity. Areva and Engen Namibia, jointly handed over cheques totalling N$60 000 in cash, whereas Certume Energy and Erongo RED also committed N$10 000 each, towards the event. Mr Eliphas Owos-Oab has made it possible that the popular //Goa-!Khaob and other prime-time social programmes of the NBC Damara/Nama Radio service will be broadcasting live from Usakos, as of Friday morning. There will be a live Ma/gaisa music Bash, were artist such as: 'Ousie Bonde', Kalina, Bullan, !Nuburob, Kalina, Birigures and Micheal Owos-Oab will share the stage with the award winning, T-Boss & Staika, will be backed by the popular Desert tunes band, on Saturday night, in the Hakhaseb Community Hall. Debmarine Revives Netball in Namibia

Debmarine Namibia's sponsorship to Netball Namibia aims to develop the game at grassroot level. It is important to make the game fun to engage girls in all regions. Debmarine hopes for netball to get the girl child interested in the sport. Not only does it teach the child team work and crucial social skills needed for the adult life, but it is also an opportunity to excel into a career sport with netball. When the Namibian National Netball team come from the African Netball Championships the Honorable Agnes Tjongarero, Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports & National Service appealed to the private sector to take hands with the Government and assist with sponsoring sports codes in the country. Debmarine Namibia has heard the call and answered with a 3-year sponsorship worth N$ 1.8 million the money will go towards supporting Netball Namibia activities for 2017 through to 2019.Otto Shikongo, Chief Executive Officer Debmarine Namibia said their sponsorship of netball followed a decision last year to support Namibia's youth through two primary sports development investments, with the other being their N$14, 1 million football sponsorship of the Debmarine Namibia Cup, also over three years". He mentioned that these partnerships are the cornerstone of our business, therefore through these sponsorships we show our commitment to supporting government and our desire to work closely with our new partners in netball and football, in an effort to build trust and realise shared aspirations of growing youth development, through sports. The development of the Netball Namibia website and playing gear for the National Team Mr Willy Mertens further said; "To Netball Namibia, we thank you for approaching us and for the meticulous and professional manner in which you cooperated with us to map our new partnership and finalise the agreements, we are about to sign. Ladies and gentlemen, in reiterating the words of my Chief Executive Officer, we believe in social investments as a means of bringing diamond dreams to reality and thereby leaving long lasting positive diamond legacy. Swakopmund Womens Soccer League The 2017/18 Swakopmund Women Soccer League commenced last Saturday 29 July 2017 at the Vineta and Mondesa sports fields. Dragon City were trounced Namib Daughters 12-1, the half time score was 7-0 in favour of Namib Daughters. Dragon City is the defending champions but they did not played like champs as Namib Daughters out played them in all facets of the much. The results of the other games that were play are African Queens 2-0 United Nation, Dream Team 3-2 Kavetu FC. Namib Daughters look like the team to beat as they are sourly the favourites to walk away with the title as they have four Namibian National Team (Brave Gladiators) players in their team. The United Nations team is the new kids on the block and consist of players that are all still in Pre Primary school.
