No “hotel tower” next to B2 at Martin Luther Monument Erwin Leuschner
The Swakopmund Town Council has re-affirmed its position and has again declined an application by a business person who wishes to develop a shopping mall and a hotel next to the B2 highway in the vicinity of the Martin Luther Museum. The decision was taken at the recent Council meeting. The developer of the project is Williward Narib of Ndakolute Trading Enterprises and it was his second application. The first application to develop land in the vicinity of Martin Luther he made in 2014. After various meetings and more letters were exchanged between Narib and t h e m u n i c i p a l i t y, Town Council decided against this development during a meeting in September 2016. Attached to the Agen-
da of the recent meeting is a letter in which Narib requests the assistance of the Office of the President for the development. In this letter from September 2016, which is addressed to President Hage Geingob, Narib explains that he is an economic, disadvantaged person. He states that it is “not fair” that officials at the municipality did not inform him of the status of the applied area from the start and that the
“municipality created a wrong expectation in me.” After his application for the construction of a shopping mall, hotel and office complex was declined in 2016, Narib launched a similar application in March 2017. In this letter he proposes a new development in the same area very similar to the original one. He requests Council to sell him a portion of land for the development of a Continues on Page 2

One or more suspects apparently attempted to break-in at the namib times office in Swakopmund over the past weekend. When staff of the coastal newspaper arrived at the office on Monday morning they found blood marks on the security gate. The door close to the slot had fresh scratch marks indicating an attempt to force the door open with a sharp object. The police were informed about the incident on Monday morning at 08:25 and only came to scene on Tuesday a few minutes before 10:00. “It seems that the culprit was unsuccessful and cut himself. Friends and family of Walvis Bay resident Roswitha Deetlefs are still coming to terms with her passing this weekend. 32 year-old Deetlefs lost the battle against cancer. She was an inspiration to many as she attempted to defeat the disease naturally and continuously remained positive. Deetlefs leaves behind her husband Willi and one year-old daughter Leila. She was actively involved at the well-known Probst Bakery in Walvis Bay. After being diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in December 2016, Deetlefs initially underwent Chemotherapy with the hope of curing the disease. After one session she said it made her feel worse and sick and it was not an answer. “I have decided to go a different route, just so that I can still be strong and enjoy the time with my Family. I am doing it naturally.” Deetlefs started an online GoFundMe campaign and quickly got a lot of support, but it was too late. The cancer had spread throughout her body. Our sincere condolences to the family.

One such issue being that “Town Council's vehicles are being used as taxis to transport family members to farms” and they are even “used to transport stolen goods.” Furthermore the community wishes to see development in town and not new bars to open. In this regard the petition reads: “There are renovations to open another liquor outlet (bar) along the main road in town. The school is close to this place. We already have seven liquor outlets in Usakos. We do not need more bars in Usakos, we need development.” The members of the group also alleged that “90% of the town council’s staff are not qualified and/or were not experienced when they were appointed.” They express their concern as these officials “have been appointed corruptly in exchange for gratification which is used by councillors and the CEO to promote corruption at the Town Council.”

According to the newest proposal the new development would comprise of 248 shops, 99 offices and a hotel of 165 rooms. Additionally he wishes to develop a tower with a height of twelve floors as “there currently is no such building in Swakopmund that can offer the opportunity to the guests and residents to view the town and sea from the top in the form of an 'Eagle View'.” Narib further explains that the tower would be called M.U.N.D Choice Tower named after the names of his three children. “The tower will be used to view the beauties of the Namib dunes, Atlantic Ocean and the town setups at large,” he stated in the letter. The tower would be operating 24 hours a day and seven days a week to also offer a city night view. While Council considered the above application, decisions taken regarding other, similar applications of the past were also once again considered. In the past there were various developers who wished to develop the said portion of land: Many of those intended to develop shopping malls. All those applications were not approved though. Subsequently Council once again decided not to approve the application by Narib.

Alleged drunk, reckless driver arrested after wild police chase Erwin Leuschner
A 31 year-old spent Sunday and Monday behind bars after he recklessly overtook numerous vehicles on the B2 between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay on Sunday after midnight and thereafter sped off from traffic officials resulting in a lengthy and dangerous police chase through Swakopmund. It actually borders a miracle that nobody was injured during the wild chase which started early on Sunday outside Walvis Bay and ended in Rakotoka Street in Swakopmund. The arrested driver, Johannes Katangala, appeared in the Swakopmund Magistrates Court yesterday. According to Swakopmund Senior Traffic Official Appolus Motinga the police was informed about the reckless driving behavior after Katangala allegedly did not stop at the police roadblock in the vicinity of Langstrand and proceeded to speed off towards Swakopmund. Reports indicate that his driving
behavior became questionable when he allegedly overtook numerous vehicles at a high speed even while travelling towards Swakopmund. He overtook even though vehicles were approaching from the front. This action nearly resulted in a serious head-on collision and it was thanks to the quick action of an oncoming driver, that an accident was avoided in the last second. This motorist saw what Katangala was about to do and swerved off the road surface to enable him to complete the reckless overtaking maneuver. The motorist reported the incident at the roadblock. When Katangala was asked to pull off at the roadblock
though he sped off towards Swakopmund. “We got a call and set up a temporary roadblock at the bridge and waited for him,” said Motinga. Katangala, who was driving a Golf GTI, did not stop at this temporary roadblock either and sped off into town. When he was confronted at the traffic light on the intersection at the Bonusmark building, he sped off again – even though it was a red light. “He drove off at a high speed and skipped many other red lights on his way into Mondesa and we chased him,” Motinga continued. Miraculously his reckless driving behavior did not caused an accident. While the authorities were hot on
his trail Katangala was finally cornered by traffic officials in Rakotoka Street. But instead of giving up, he fled on foot. “He jumped out of his car and ran away. He jumped over a wall of a house and continued running and jumping over walls in an attempt to escape,” Motinga continued. But the law did get hold of him as a traffic official managed to apprehend Katangala soon thereafter. After the arrest Katangala tested positive for driving under the influence of alcohol. The reading of the breathalyzer test was 0.56. The legal limit is 0.37. He appeared in court yesterday on a charge of reckless and negligent driving as well as driving under the influence.
Karibib earthquake measured 3.4 on Richterscale Erwin Leuschner
An earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richterscale was recorded on Tuesday (26 April) at 12:59:58 South of Karibib. This data was released by the Geological Survey of Namibia. The shaking earth was felt by some residents of both Karibib and Usakos. According to the Geological Survey the earthquake occurred at a depth of ten kilometers. It was picked up by three stations: Windhoek, Ariamsvlei and Tsumeb. The recorded data indicate that it
lasted for about 15 seconds. Minor earthquakes of such a “low” magnitude are common worldwide, with more than 100 000 occurring annually. They can be felt by people, but very rarely cause damages. The shaking of indoor objects can be noticed.

The case was withdrawn and bail of N$1 000 was refunded. Collin Auchab (38), Stephanus Theodor (38), Reinhardt Narib (38), Nicolaus Mokomele (44), Ruben Shikezo (42) and Andrian Schickerling (51) appeared on a charge of impersonating a member of the police and a count of extortion. The matter was postponed to 9 August for the decision pending by the prosecutor general. For Auchab a warrant of arrest was issued. Shikezo is on bail of N$7 000. All other accused are on bail of N$10 000. Ferdinand Hijarangura (50) appeared on a charge of driving with an excessive breath alcohol level. A warrant of arrest was issued as the accused was absent before court. He is on bail of N$3 000. Sarel Francois Mynhardt (25) appeared on a charge of driving with an excessive breath alcohol level. He was found guilty and sentenced to a fine of N$4 000 and 12 months imprisonment and had his license suspended for three months. Quinton Narib (26) appeared on a charge of being in possession of cannabis. He was found guilty and sentenced to a fine of N$1 000 and six months imprisonment. He was out on bail of N$2 000. Rodger Namiseb (18) and Jogonia Uirab (36) appeared on a count of theft each. They were found guilty and sentenced to a fine of N$2 000 and 12 months imprisonment. Christ van Wyk (18) appeared on a charge of Assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. The case was postponed to 8 May for plea. The accused remains in custody. Bertus Koch (40) appeared on five counts of rape. The matter was postponed to 5 May for further investigation. The accused remains in custody. Mervin Gawanab (31) appeared on two counts of assault by threat read with provisions of the domestic violence act. The matter was postponed to 30 May for a mental observation report. The accused remains in custody. Sydney Nanub (26) appeared on a charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm read with provisions of the domestic violence act. The case was postponed to 15 May for further investigation. Accused is out on bail of N$1 000. David Nghiimbwasha (38) appeared on a count of resisting a member of the police. The case was postponed to 24 May for plea. Bail has been granted in the amount of N$2 000.

Horse suspected for killing owner at Otjimbingwe

A 29 year-old was allegedly severely kicked by his horse on Saturday afternoon in the vicinity of Otjimbingwe, which ultimately caused his death. The police is investigating a case of inquest, said deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, Nampol regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo. According to Iikuyu the body of Thomas Haimbodi was found on Saturday at about 17:00 under a tree about 300 meters from the Otjimbingwe Police Station. It is alleged that the deceased and his co-worker, both are cattle herders, travelled to Otjimbingwe during the morning on their horses “for enjoyment.” They are both working on the “Wellem post Resettlement farm” located about ten kilometers from Otjimbingwe. They were allegedly drinking together at different bars in the area, when later during the day the deceased's co-worker could not find the deceased nor
his horse. He thought that Haimbodi went home. The body was found shortly thereafter, the horse was standing close-by. “It is alleged that the deceased was kicked several times all over his body by his horse while trying to ride the horse back home. He was injured and it is suspected to have caused his death,” said Iikuyu. According to Iikuyu it is suspected that the deceased was under the influence of alcohol during the time of incident.The next of kin have been infor-med. A post mortem investigation will be con-ducted to determine the exact cause of death. The investigation is ongoing.

The past long May weekend was one of the bloodiest weekends on the roads in the Namibian history. Across the entire country at least 22 people lost their lives during various accidents. The most horrific collision being the accident between Okahandja and Otjiwarongo on Sunday which claimed the lives of 15 people. “A sad day for Namibia” and “shocking.” These were the remarks by the coastal West Coast Safety Initiative (WCSI) after the horrific head-on collision on Sunday at about 16:00 between an Iveco bus and a Nissan NP200 pick-up. The collision occurred about 110 kilometers from Okahandja on the B1 highway. Exact details about the cause have not yet been determined. Initial reports indicate that the bus was travelling from the north while the pick-up was travelling towards Otjiwarongo. According to reports there were 24 occupants in the bus, including the driver. The bus burst into flames shortly after impact, resulting in ten people burning beyond recognition. The five occupants of the pick-up died on the spot. The police has called on relatives to come forward and assist with the identification of the deceased. The remaining 14 occupants of the bus sustained various degrees of injuries and were rushed to various hospitals. An eyewitness reported to the WCSI: “I got there about 20 minutes after the accident. People were still trapped in the burning bus. All occupants of the Nissan NP200 perished on impact. It was a gruesome scene. Survivors are mainly children who were thrown out.”

WBCG appoints new board members
The Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG) announced the official appointment of three new board members in anticipation of “another decade of steering and facilitating trade efficiently and effectively.” The new members include Susan Beukes, Deputy Commissioner for Trade Facilitation, who will be representing the Ministry of Finance on the board; Petrina Nakale, Director for Industrial Development, represents the Ministry of Industrialisation, Trade and SME Development; and Riaan Lottering, Chairperson and representative of the Walvis Bay Port Users Association. The group was established in 2000 to engage in business development activities and facilitating of corridor and infrastructure development. The Walvis Bay Corridors are an integrated system of well maintained tarred roads and rail networks - accommodating all modes of transport. Bisey Uirab, Chairman of the Board, explained, “the multiplicity on company boards is important to sustain performance. Broadening the composition of the board helps expand member perspectives”.

The regional office of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in Swakopmund looks back on a productive 2016. Monique Prince says she is not the owner of MCK Debt Collectors Monique Prins responded to a recent article in namib times where she was accused by her former employer at OSK Debt Collectors of resigning and using unethical means to open a rival debt collecting company. Prins refuted these allegations and said this week she is merely employed by this “new rival” company MCK Debt Collectors. In the response Prins states: “Clarification on an article that appeared in the namib times on 21 April 2017 entitled “Debt collector warns public about former employee stealing clients”. Man found dead in Swakopmund guesthouse The police in the Erongo Region is investigating two cases of unnatural deaths which occurred recently in Swakopmund and Usakos respectively. The causes of death for Jasper Davis (38) as well as Werner Scholze (83) has not yet been determined. According to Erastus Iikuyu, Nampol, regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo the body of Jasper Jacobus Albertus Davis was found at a guesthouse in Swakopmund on Sunday 23 April. It is alleged that Davis booked himself in at the guest-house on 22 April. His body was found lying on the bed by an employee who entered the room to clean. The Police is not ruling out a suicide, despite no suicide found. It is alleged that the deceased was suffering from cancer and had suicidal tendencies in the past. The investigation is ongoing. Construction of old swimming pool development to commence in October Erwin Leuschner
The new development on the site of the old swimming pool at the Mole in Swakopmund, which has been an eyesore for many months, must commence on 9 October this year and be completed within 82 weeks. Town Council decided on this new deadline at its recent meeting. The development comprises of luxury apartments, commercial units, retail outlets and restaurants. The history of the development and the sale of the prop e r t y b y To w n Council to the Lighthouse Group, later known as the Lighthouse Property Investment Trust, dates back to 2003. According to the Agenda of the recent meeting the sale of the erf was approved by council in 2003, but it was heavily criticized by the public – many objections were raised. In 2009 the Minister of Urban and Rural Development granted approval for the sale, paving the way for the new development. In February 2010 council and the Lighthouse Property Investment Trust entered into an agreement which entailed a development deadline being 4 July 2017. In March this year Jimney Construction Property Developers, in their capacity nomination officio being Trustees of the Trust, requested an extension of time to construct and com-
plete the development. It further states in the Agenda that the Lighthouse Property Investment Trust submitted plans to the Aesthetics Committee who granted approval in March 2016. There were a number of meetings though with the former CEO of Swakopmund, after which some changes needed to be done, specifically to the effect of the commercial space. “All this caused an unforeseen delay,” it states in the agenda. While council considered the extension for the development, similar applications of the past were kept in mind. One such being the application by the Ohlthaver & List Group for the construction of the StrandHotel, which was also significantly delayed from its original completion date. In the meantime the Lighthouse Property Investment Trust submitted a timeline for the development of the old swimming pool. ved, the bulk earthworks will commence on 9 October 2017. The project would thereafter be completed by March 2020. At the recent Council meeting the extension was approved but in the same vein council set a strict deadline. “Jimney Construction Property Developers and Lighthouse Property Investment Trust be granted extension of 82 weeks, from 9 October 2017 to commence with construction and complete the development,” it states. Furthermore council advised that these conditions must be met and signed by the end of May, failing which council will invoke the breach clause.

Woman of Excellence pledges life to care for disabled It takes a truly extraordinary person to dedicate their whole life for the care of others. Even more commendable is someone who cares for people with mental and physical disabilities which can be a challenging feat. So it comes as no surprise that Ebenecia Tjiveta of Onyose Trust emerged victorious and was named as one of Standard Bank's Woman of Excellence in 2016 for her commitment to the trust that works with mentally and physically disabled people. Standard Bank supports the development, empowerment and recognition of women in all sectors of society by contributing financially towards the Namib i a n Wo m e n o f Excellence project through the Miss Namibia Pageant. Formerly known as the Jurgen Wahn Trust, the Onyose Trust cares for over 45 children and young adults who either suffer from mental or physical disabilities. They provide a holistic service including day care and Community Based Rehabilitation programmes for people with a range of disabilities, give people with disabilities skills to live independently as much as possible within their own
communities and provide training for families, carers, community members and volunteers on how to care for and stimulate people with disabilities. Tjiveta joined the Trust in 2004 after she received a Diploma in Community Work in Australia. “Upliftment is defined as improvement of a person's moral and spiritual condition or making someone feel better…My life's journey has always been linked to helping other people. I had that passion since I was young. I now live to serve, and this brings me great fulfilment,” Tjiveta recently said of her drive to work for the Onyose Trust. Tjiveta noted that she found joy in helping and supporting the disadvantaged. The experience has also helped her with personal growth because she has learned patience, humility and to appreciate people for whom they are. Being a religious woman, these experiences have also helped her embody the teachings of Mathew 5 verse 16, which states: “In the same
way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven.” The role a woman plays in any community is an insurmountable one and that fact is not lost on Tjiveta who has assumed role of a mother. “Mothers have a unique and crucial role to play in community upliftment. Due to their strong characters women are in the position to bring changes in our communities. Women are faced with multiple challenges in our changing world, but one factor remains constant; the timeless importance of mothers and their invaluable contribution to raising the next generation. By rewarding their efforts and enhancing their living conditions, we can secure a better future for all,” she explained. While her devotion to the cause has not wavered, her duties are not without their challenges. Tjiveta is often faced with having to stretch limited financial resources to fund the Trust's activities; a shortage of staff, volunteers and health professionals; a
bus to transport their clients to and from their homes and a shortage of food for their kitchen to feed their clients. “We have encountered various challenges but continued with determination and patience to do this much needed work in our community. It is important in this line of work to note that an act of kindness to others is an act of kindness to Christ. I encourage you to start today and lend a helping hand to others in need. We should not just limit helping people to just giving them money, food, and clothes. Sometimes people just need someone to listen. Sometimes people just need words of wisdom. Think about the many different ways you can help the needy today,” Tjiveta explained. Vowing to continue her efforts for many more years to come, Tjiveta urged others to join in on the cause as it is a reciprocal one, advising them that by giving to others people receive happiness, fulfilment and meaning in return.

African Deli will manufacture readymade traditional African meals using beef, lamb and chicken. This will include beef and lamb matangara, which is known as mogodu in South Africa. The DBN finance is being used for plant and equipment. Says Jerome Mutumba, Africa Deli came to the Bank with an impressively researched proposal. In terms of indepth consumer demand studies, and following recipe development, Gauteng Province, with 8,3 million potential consumers, was identified as the ideal market penetration point, with the rest of South Africa, followed by SADC member states, as next steps in the company's expected expansion. In terms of product appeal, Mutumba says the product is targeted at the emerging middle class, who have strong links to traditional culinary culture, but limited time for the lengthy preparation process required for traditional meals. Africa Deli's products are packaged in microwaveable pouches, which saves a considerable amount of time in preparation of the meal. He goes on to say that ready meals have been dominated by European and Mediterranean culinary styles, and the Bank is proud to be associated with an addition to the range of African foods available on shelves. Talking about African cuisine in retail, he points to chakalaka as

an example of successful uptake of a traditional African dish. Africa Deli's range of meals can add to the range of products. Concerning the location of the factory in Walvis Bay, Mutumba says the location is ideal as it provides access through SADC corridors, as well as maritime shipping routes. The set of industries in Walvis Bay can provide an excellent ecosystem for African Deli, with transport and logistics featuring strongly in the Port's favour. Walvis Bay is also well-positioned to receive unprocessed ingredients required for manufacturing of the meals. Mutumba notes that the company is a perfect
example of DBN's financing ambition. Manufacturing has been singled out as one of the key elements of the Harambee Prosperity Plan (HPP). As African Deli is both a manufacturer, and exporter, and will require inputs from local agriculture and agriindustry, as well as transport and logistics, the benefits of financing the company will spread to other sectors of the economy. He encourages other entrepreneurs in the Erongo region to approach the Bank's office in Walvis Bay to discuss their ambitions and find out about the Bank's requirements. Walvis Bay resident wins bonus cash prize of N$250 000 with Nedbank Last week Thursday started off like any other day for Mr Johannes Amupanda Shigwedha of Walvis Bay, only, with him winning N$250 000 from Nedbank. For the past 30 years, Mr Shigwedha has woken up every weekday to go to a job where he works as an electrician, to enable him to support himself and his family. Seven years ago, he started banking his monthly salary into a Nedbank account. On Thursday when he turned up for work, he was informed to visit the Nedbank Walvis Bay Branch as a matter of urgency. “I was a little bit scared, you know when the bank calls you in, you never know what to expect. So I complied and was at the bank the time they told me to be there. I only started to relax once I saw that they had a red carpet laid out for me when I got there,” he said. Once Mr Shigwedha was at the Nedbank Walvis Bay Branch, he was informed that his name had been drawn in the Nedbank Win Your Share of N$1 Million competition

Am 1. Mai 1947 kaufte die 23jährige Evelyn McHale ein Ticket für die Aussichtsplattform des Empire State Buildings. Eine junge Frau, die erst Tags zuvor ihren Verlobten besuchte, um dessen Geburtstag zu feiern. Doch anstatt die Aussicht über New York City zu genießen, erklomm sie die Brüstung und ließ sich 86 Stockwerke in die Tiefe fallen. Gebremst wurde ihr Fall durch das Dach eines geparkten Cadillacs. Ein Student der Fotografie namens Robert C. Wiles hörte den lauten Knall des Körpers, als er auf das Metall traf, und rannte zu der Unfallsstelle. Zufällig hatte er seine Kamera dabei und so schoss er das Foto nur vier Minuten nach dem Tod von Evelyn McHale. Es sollte das einzige Foto sein, das er jemals veröffentlichte. Stellt euch vor, unsere Kinder kommen jeden Morgen in ihre Klasse. Bevor der Unterricht beginnt, gibt es erst eine kurze Andacht. Es wird aus der Bibel gelesen, gesungen und gebetet. Obendrein gibt es zweimal in der Woche Religionsunterricht, vom ersten bis ins letzte Schuljahr. Ein Traum? Nein! Viele von uns erinnern sich noch an diese Zeit. Ich hatte einen Religionslehrer, der eine Auszeit machte. Zusammen mit seiner Frau arbeiteten sie als freiwillige Helfer ein Jahr in Israel bei archäologischen Fundstellen. Als er wieder zurückkam, lehrte er uns die Geschichten aus der Bibel richtig lebhaft mit seinen Erzählungen, Erfahrungen und Diazvorträgen von dem Gelobten Land. Es war, als ob Jesus mit uns auf der Schulbank sässe! Heute sind die Zeiten wohl anders. Die Welt und auch unsere Schulen beschäftigen sich nicht mehr so intensiv mit dem Glauben, egal auf welche Art. Aber verzweifeln, nein, das braucht man nicht. Unsere Kinder können trotzdem dem christlichen Glauben auf einer Art und Weise begegnen, die in der heutigen Zeit viel mehr anspricht: durch Kinder-
und Jugendarbeit. Was ist sie? Wo findet man sie? Was ist ein Diakon? Wie wird dieses Projekt finanziert? Die Kinder- und Jugendarbeit in Namibia ist ein Projekt der ELKIN/DELK, die unsere Kinder und die Jugendlichen in Namibia anspricht. Unter der Leitung von einem Jugendiakon (Jugendpastor) wird der christliche Glaube in den Alltag der jugendlichen Gemeinde integriert. Dieses wird hauptsächlich von den Gemeinden und von der SilvesterknallerLosaktion finanziert. Noch eine große Hilfe sind freiwillige Spenden aus Gemeinden oder Spenden aus einem Nachlass. Aus diesen Reserven können neue Projekte und auch extra Anschaf-
fungen zugunsten der Jugend gemacht werden - zum Beispiel ein Spielplatz, wo unsere Kinder gemeinsam toben und Energie loswerden können. Oder ein Raum, wo die Jugend sich trifft, “chillt” und zusammen spaßige und auch eine besinnliche Zeit verbringen können. Ausflüge, Begegnung mit anderen Jugendgruppen aus unserm Land so wie aus dem Ausland. Dieses und noch vieles mehr bietet die Kinder- und Jugendarbeit der Elkin/Delk in Namibia. Ja, die Zeiten haben sich wohl geändert, aber dieses neue und aufregende Angebot und Erlebnis der Kinder- und Jugendarbeit läßt mich denken: “Hallo, Jesus ist doch noch im Raum!” Horst Heiser

Tiere - die geben allenfalls Laute von sich, gruppieren sich zur Sicherheit und paaren sich kurz, um dann wieder ihrer eigenen Wege zu gehen. Bin ich froh, dass sich inzwischen herausgestellt hat, wie verkehrt diese Einstellung ist. In Indien hat man kürzlich den heiligen Fluss Ganges zum Lebewesen erklärt. Warum nicht? Das ist der nächste Schritt! Ich habe neulich einen Videoclip gesehen, auf dem die Geburt eines Elefantenbabys zu sehen ist. Welch eine
herzerwärmende Aufnahme, die zeigt, wie die gesamte Herde sich schützend um das Neugeborene drängt, es von allen Seiten mit den Rüsseln streichelt und ihm gleichzeitig damit aufzuhelfen versucht...während Menschen bedrohlich nahe neugierig zuschauen. Und da soll keine Liebe, Fürsorge und kein Schutzempfinden beteiligt sein? Oder nehmen wir mal den Begriff Treue, den wir Menschen uns zum Monopol gemacht haben. Tiere und Treue? Hahaha! Inline hockey introduces Checkmate with the first ever Africa Cup Bank Windhoek and the Namibia Chess Federation In as little over a month, Inline Hockey in Namibia will be presenting the first ever Africa Cup in the country. The event will be taking place at The Dome, in Swakopmund from 22 – 27 May.
Players from different countries, will be competing in different teams. Participating teams are: SAS Bluebirds from Norway, Taunus Wild Hogs from Germany and a club team from South Africa with a Brazilian guest player will be in action. Another highlight is the team consisting of coaches from USA currently living in Namibia, 3 Spanish players, 1 player from Eritrea and a Canadian, are joining forces to try and upset the local National senior and Junior Men's team. A number of Namibian players have been combined to form 2 more teams. The majority of these players have previously been partaking on National level or in the Open division in our current league. Furthermore, the tournament will see one of the most well known referees from the USA, offering his services to be the head umpire and also train our local senior referees. The President of World Inline
Hockey and other important names in Namibia Inline Hockey will also be present during the course of the week. Junior players will receive skills training by our local coaches, who have agreed to volunteer their time to further improve the level of hockey in the country. This would also give the Junior players the opportunity to be part of the week of high caliber hockey at The Dome. Games will commence from Tuesday and the official opening ceremony will take place on Tuesday evening at around 18h00. Anybody and everybody is more than welcome to join in this exciting event. Bank Windhoek recently supported the Namibia Chess Federation with chess sets,to encourage the growth of the sport throughout the country. “Bank Windhoek is excited to support the Namibia Chess Federation, in its efforts to grow and promote chess across Namibia. Chess is the best sport to exercise the most important organ in our bodies: the brain,” said Riaan van Rooyen, Head: Corporate Affairs, Strategy and Sustainability at Bank Windhoek. Other benefits of chess include that it sparks creativity, trains both sides of the brain, increases problem-solving skills, improves reading skills and optimizes memory improvement. The Namibia Chess Federation will host a Monday league every week, for the next 18 weeks, to encourage participation and interest among chess players. “With the Bank Windhoek Junior Open and Closed Championships having commenced in April, this support from the bank is much appreciated. We would like to thank Bank Windhoek for their support, in sponsoring chess sets to the Namibia Chess Federation. Piquet Jacobs Namibian boxer, Jonas Junius, recently returned to Namibia for the first time after being arrested and charged with sexual assault and attempted rape during the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Junius was released on bail soon after his arrest and placed under the care of the Namibian Embassy in Brazil, where he was to remain for the finalisation of his trial which officially started in January. While waiting for a ruling by the High Court, conditions on Junius' release has been relaxed allowing him to return home. He may need to return to Brazil to appear in court again, depending on the outcome of the ruling, in which case he will do with Erastus Lazarus, the Namibia military attache in Brazil. Junius has since made a surprise appearance at a Namibian National Olympic Committee press conference, and expressed his gratitude to finally be home after 8 months and to those who have been supporting him.

Coastal Raiders shines in the Bank Windhoek Indoor Hockey League Sport Reporter
This year the Coastal Raiders managed to make their mark in the Bank Windhoek Indoor Hockey League. The 1st Ladies team (1st League) ended in 2nd position, whilst 2nd Ladies (2nd League) team got third place and the Men's team (2nd League) ended with 6th place on the log. The 1st Ladies team secured its second position after a historical 12-1 victory over NUST in the 1st league. They ended one point behind the log leaders. The team will chase the top position next year. nd The 2 ladies team improved incredibly, although trailing 3-0 in their last match against Windhoek Angels. They managed to move up to third position on the 2nd league log from 5th position the previous year. The Mens’ team won their last match against Windhoek Old Boys (WOB) 2-1 which secured them a sixth place in their 2nd league. The Mens’ team are still new at the Indoor Hockey League,
as their team have been established this year. “We want to thank all our players, parents and organisers for a very successful Indoor League”. The Coastal Raiders hockey team committee are highly satisfied with the teams' performance. “The ladies and men improved their game structures dramatically and at this rate indoor hockey at the coast we will be unbeatable over the next few years”, said Shaheed Abrahams, one of the coaches. The team is currently taking a break from practice until September and wish to establish another Beach Hockey game this year.

Smoke tyres not drugs. This was the theme this year of the Easter Spin Bash, an event aimed at keeping youth off the streets. This was a fun spin event, which was held on 14 and 15 April on outskirts of Swakopmund. About 15 cars participated in the Spin Bash which was hosted by the DSD (Drift Spin Drags) Motor Club. There were also members from Okahandja Spinning & Drifting Motor Club, Midway Spinning & Drifting Motor Club (Rehoboth) and 2 individuals from South Africa that participated. “Two years ago we visited Johannesburg. The South Africans taught us a trick or two. Now it is an honour to have them here as they are now able to see how we do things here”, said Gerrit du Plessis, one of the club members. He describes spinning as the greatest feeling in the world especially after going home; it makes you feel relaxed so much so we urge the community to come and have a taste of this adventure. The event started on Good Friday and carried on to
Saturday. The aim was to keep car owners at the event instead of exposing themselves to dangers on the roads and the streets. It is also a relaxing environment where people can braai and enjoy themselves within a safe and controlled environment. Last years' theme was burn rubber not your soul. They also hosted a charity event on the 31 December last year to support 100 children in the DRC with food and stationery for school. Another charity event is planned at Rehoboth in aid of the Cancer Association of Namibia. The Club urges the community to support these charity events. They are looking at chances of asking the Municipality for more land in order to extend their drag strip.
