Destruction as fire rips through shack community Mondesa's Oletweni quarter was hit by a devastating shack fire in the early morning hours of Saturday. The fire destroyed twenty shacks, but thanks to people running knocking at every door for residents to get out to a safe distance, no injuries or deaths were reported.

Swakopmund's town council some years ago set out land where all of Namibia's cultures could establish a traditional village with the aim of creating a new tourist attraction and also place where people can learn about and from one another's cultural origins. So far, only the ovaHimba traditional village has gone up in 2018. It is located next to the Martin Luther Museum at the entrance to the town. The main aim was in line with what was expected by the local authority. It was showcasing products and services as well as the ovaHimba cultural music called “Ondjongo”. Tourists and locals alike flocked to the village. In the first months after its opening in October 2018, matters started to turn for the worse. Shacks are constructed of highly combustible materials and open flames like candles, gas stoves and also illegal electricity connections are the main cause of these fires. Shack fires lead to regular death and injuries among shack dwellers. Shack fires often leave people with little more than the clothes they wore when they fled from the fire. The latest shack fire started around 02:00 on Saturday. At the time of the fire Swakopmund was without electricity. That rules out an electrical fire whilst a burning candle, lamp or other forms of open flame are believed to have caused the fire. Around month end it is usually the time people consume large amounts of alcohol. Shack fires have been started in the past as a result of people leaving candles or lamps burning and then falling asleep or forgetting to put out open flames before leaving the shack.
Man killed in vehicle accident at Henties Bay A 39-year-old man was killed in a road accident at Henties Bay on Saturday afternoon. Josef Petrus Swartbooi lost control of his silver Volkswagen Polo and hit a boundary wall, causing the vehicle to overturn. Swartbooi was flung from the vehicle in the process and was fatally injured. The incident was confirmed by police spokesperson for Erongo Region, Inspector Ileni Shapumba.
Origin of water body in Fairways now known Eileen van der Schyff In a recent article in Namib Times, the newspaper reported about residents of Fairways in Walvis asking questions as to a body of water forming on an undeveloped piece of land flanked by Tecomaria Street and Nongolo Mbumba Drive. Namib Times investigated this mystery and found that the water has it origin at a building site near the golf course where a new cell phone tower is to be erected for Telecom Namibia. Walvis Bay poses a peculiar construction challenge when it comes to the digging of foundations. As the foundation is dug out, ground water levels (sea water) accumulates. The deeper the digging goes, the fast the water accumulates and so also the volumes. Information provided to the Namib Times reveals the contractor has chosen this particular open plot to establish a coffer dam. Water is pumped from the foundation hole to this coffer dam, resulting in this body of water growing only a few hundred metres from the nearest houses. “It is obvious the contractor opted for the cheapest way to handle large volumes of water. Instead of hauling the water away in tanker trucks, it is pumped into this coffer dam”, a disgruntled resident says. Adding the body of water poses a risk to small children who can drown in the water and it is not known for how long the water would be standing in that coffer dam after the completion of the cell phone tower. “The ground in the area below the water body is saturated and it will take a long time for the water to dissipate.” The resident said. When the contractor was approached with questions, he declined to provide answers. “Please make an appointment and come and see me at my office. Moreover, on whose behalf do you ask these questions?”, this contractor reacted when approached for comment.

Brazilian naval call at Walvis Bay The Brazilian navy vessel Amazonas, departed Walvis Bay yesterday after a call at port since 28 February. In a statement over the weekend the Brazilian Navy through the country's Namibian embassy said the vessel departed Brazil on 17 February and during its brief stay, the crew will participate in the Obangame Express 2020 exercise. “The Obangame training involves military personnel from Africa, Europe and the Americas. The aim of this training is to equip attendees with skills to employ in maritime security in the Guinea Gulf against piracy, drugs and arms trafficking, hijacking, illegal fishing and other illicit activities within the region. During this operation, which is an annual occurrence, the Brazilian Navy will carry out exercises on the coast of Angola, Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Throughout the visit of the vessel, military personnel from several navies will be on board of the “OPV Amazonas” in order to strengthen ties and compare operational procedures”, reads the remainder of the statement.

Eros Fundraiser 2020 The Lawn bowls year kicked off officially this past weekend, when Eros Bowling Club held its annual fundraiser. Every year each club has a chance to have a fundraiser held under the auspices of the Namibian Bowling Association (NBA). The Eros fundraiser usually has a dress theme. This year the theme was alphabet: each bowler had to dress up as something which begins with the same first letter as their name. Not everyone dressed up but those who did had great fun playing in their various outfits. There was Anjuleen Viljoen dressed as an African in a beautiful traditional Ovambo dress, Wojtek Majewski came as a worker, complete with hard hat and chopper. Valdi Wentzel was a fearful vampire and Jenny Gardiner was a juggler, to mention just a few. The winner of the best dressed bowler was Elna Esterhuizen who was an Egyptian. The fundraiser was very well attended, with 47 players entering. Because games are played with four players in a team, this meant that one team had only three players so one bowler had to play four bowls instead of two. When this happens they have to subtract a quarter of their score. The bowls competition was played over two games of ten ends each, with the winners moving rinks at the end of the first game and the losers staying where they were. In the second game the players had to swop places, which meant that the leads played skip and the skips played lead. This led to a great deal of fun as some players were not bowlers at all but came to support the cause. The eventual winners were the team with three players only, in spite of the fact that their score had to be adjusted. They were Amy Nilsen, Schalk van Wyk and Delyse Murch.

Football Fanatics In The Northern Region Of Namibia Entertained By Brave Warriors Over The Weekend In the bid to prepare for the Chan tournament in Cameroon in April, the Brave Warriors put in a good performance in the two friendly matches held in the North on Saturday. The Brave warriors first match was against Oshana's best eleven. In the first match, First goal was scored by Salom Omseb, A great header in second half, Courtesy of Rehabeam Mbango assist. On target again was Obrey Amseb who fired the ball past the Evra Kanenguni goalkeeper of Oshana best Eleven. The Second match of the day saw the Brave warriors beat the Northern Region's Best Eleven 4-0. The weather was favourable and created an amazing experience for football fanatics in the North.

Scorpions walk away with trophy -ISWB The International School of Walvis Bay (ISWB) had their Inter-house Athletics day this past Saturday. The children supported their two teams, the Cobras and the Scorpions with great enthusiasm and spirit. The two teams competed tightly against each other throughout the day. Medals were won by many athletes of both teams but in the end the Scorpions walked away with the trophy.

Junior Tennis tournaments in Swakopmund
A total of 60 Junior Tennis players participated in the first of nine Junior Tennis tournaments hosted by the Namibia Tennis Association (NTA) at the municipal tennis courts in Vineta Swakopmund. The competition that was played over two days saw 120 matches played in short sets due to a shortage available tennis courts. This is a problem for the NTA at the coast as they do not experience in in Windhoek. The NTA will definitely need to look into getting more
courts in future to avoid this problem. Chairperson of the NTA Junior Tennis Committee Santie van der Walt said that the NTA will hosts three similar tournament at the coast with the other six to be played in Windhoek with the masters and Namibian National players to be selected
from these tournaments. Van der Walt added that the NTA aims to give players a platform to develop their full potential regardless of possible setbacks and that they are passionate about the development of tennis in Namibia as a competitive and professional sport. The under 14 boys
