Two sources disclosed this week that a delegation of high ranking Government officials, and other interested parties, will meet with Safari Investments to discuss options to remedy the fact that its Platz Am Meer shopping complex allegedly exceeds its building boundary and intrudes onto Government land below the high water mark. One source claims Safari Investments will be given a choice to either break down structures intruding on Government land, alternatively to negotiate for a ninety nine year lease for the land it occupies unlawfully. The second source confirmed knowledge of the meeting, but said he had no knowledge of any choices to be put to Safari Investments.

Child trafficking trio wants bail At the time of going to press yesterday late afternoon, the bail application was still heard Khatri Sarhan, the Pakistani national who was arrested along with two Namibian women as accomplices on a charge of child trafficking. The bail application is heard in the Walvis Bay magistrate’s court. Sarhan and his two co-accused, Jerezuuka Beverley Kamongua and Melody Ortner, were arrested over the weekend and made a first appearance in court on Monday. It is alleged Kamongua and Ortner allegedly against a payment provided a sixteen-year-old girl to Sarhan for sex against her will.
Floris Steenkamp A gang is believed to have targeted at least one truck on the B2 highway between Arandis and Usakos in recent days, throwing an object at the truck’s windscreen with the hope the truck driver overturns the vehicle. It is believed the motive is then to plunder the truck of valuables in the event of an accident or when the driver stops to investigate the damage. A truck owner of Walvis Bay made this startling revelation this week, telling of his ordeal of Sunday night in a similar incident some 20 kilometres east of Arandis. This truck owner said it was already dark and there were three vehicles driving behind his truck. In the truck’s headlights he could see a white pick-up, single cab without a canopy approaching from the front. “I could see a person getting up on the back. It was a male. He threw an object to my truck. The next moment the windscreen exploded”, the truck owner explained. He kept driving on and only stopped to inspect the damage after traveling a significant distance. He believes there was an attempt to make him cause an accident where after they would have turned around to loot the truck from valuables. “These people don’t have respect for the lives of others. I could have made an accident and I could have killed other road users”, this truck owner explained. Adding he calls upon truck owners and operators to be vigilant and also for the Namibian Police to investigate this matter urgently.

Namibia can be justifiable proud of its fishing industry. An industry, which at independence was on its knees. Most species were overfished and the resource was in a deplorable state. The MFMR, through its fishing management system was able to improve the state of many of the species. Today, the horse mackerel, hake and monk are being fished nearly at the maximum sustainable yield. However, not all species have unfortunately reacted positively to the management strategy and the pilchard has been placed under a fishing moratorium, which will hopefully assist this specie in its recovery. Even so, we can only commend our Ministry and scientists for their successful work under the circumstances. Today the fishing industry is an economic giant, providing direct employment to around 16,000 people and indirect employment to another 22, 000, The industry earns N$10,5 Billion in foreign exchange and it is the economic driver in the harbour towns of Lüderitz and Walvis Bay. Today Namibians man the vessels that land the fish at shore-based factories were an increasingly amount of valueadded products are being produced for the local and international markets. Namibian Horse mackerel assist in feeding the population in a number of landlocked African countries while the high value retail products of the Namibian hake sector grace the tables of Europe, Australia and America. Prior to independence, companies whose shareholders lived outside of the country controlled the fisheries in Namibia.
Fishing rights were in the hands of foreigners and profits were repatriated to their head offices in Cape Town, Moscow and others. The Namibianization policy of the government was designed to rectify the situation and ensure that the rights to Namibian fishing resources are given to the Namibians. This policy has been followed strictly since independence and today 99% of fishing rights are in the hands of Namibian citizens or companies beneficially controlled by Namibians. The MFMR in following its Namibianization policy has aimed in granting fishing rights to a wide sector of the population, youth, war veterans, marginalized communities, people with disabilities, women, etc. Request for applications for fishing rights are advertised in the media, consultative meetings were held in the regions to advise interested parties on the application process. We applaud the MFMR for being so transparent and people centered. The reality is that the MFMR cannot allocate fishing rights to all applicants but we welcome wholeheartedly those who are going to be successful in their right application to join the industry and continue building on the strong foundation already in place and NOT use the industry as an ATM, cash cow or a get rich quick scheme. The open and transparent approach to the granting
FNB market researcher gives advice to stretch fuel consumtion Once again, fuel prices have gone up, this time by 25 cents per litre. The increase in fuel tax from 40 cents to 65 cents per litre happened in July after an increase in fuel prices in June 2018. This latest petrol hike in Namibia has led to fuel prices in Walvis Bay increasing to N$12.55 per litre for unleaded and N$12.88 per litre N$ 12.93 per litre for 50ppm diesel. According to Daniel Kavishe, Market Research Manager at FNB Namibia, there has been an increase of about 23% over the past year, with differences attributable to specific towns across the country. For an average 45-litre tank, it will now cost at least N$565 to fill up versus N$473 at this time last year (assuming you are fuelling up in Walvis Bay). “As usual, many imports to Namibia are via road and this means that many items will become more expensive again, hitting the already embattled consumer,' Daniel adds. “The timing remains unfortunate and with other transport related services expected to adjust upwards, consumers should prepare for a more expensive road ahead.” Here are some tips on how consumers can stretch their fuel consumption: Swipe for fuel for Rewards: The good news is that if you swipe for fuel with your FNB credit card you could receive up to 10% cash back with the FNB Rewards programme. Keep the pressure on: Correctly inflated tyres can increase mileage by 3.3% Go easy: Harsh acceleration can increase consumption by over 30% At your service: Keep your vehicle in tip-top shape to ensure it performs efficiently Weigh less: Fixtures such as roof boxes and bicycle racks increase drag and should be removed when not in use. Also remove extra items from the boot to lessen the load. of fishing rights is putting the MFMR under extreme pressure. The Ministry can only allocate quotas in line with the size of the fish resource. Issuing more rights, and therefore more quotas, than the resource can carry, will deplete the resource and result in reducing catch rates. At the same time, thousand of existing jobs and tax generating infrastructure are at stake if their access to the resource is denied. Therefore, while the interest by the public is great, it must be understood that not all can be successful. The fish stocks off the Namibian coast are a national resource, which belongs to the nation. The MFMR has always embraced an open and transparent approach to allocate such resource to broad based rights holders, however it must be understood by all that the resource is limited and not every single applicant can be successful but rather those ready to add value and invest in the growth of the current industry. Are you going to add value or to become a cost to the
national exploitation of our national resources? This is the first question any applicant should ask himself or herself before entering the process. Fellow Namibians, the limited marine resources of our country should not be now put under the pressure to resolve all the problems of our nation. We would like to encourage other ministries, which are custodians of a national resource, like Mines and Energy or many others, to adopt the same pragmatic and
open approach when allocating rights and licenses for those resources under their control as the MFMR. The sound exploitation of our national resources is a collective task and it should be done through the principles of true Namibianization and the empowering of Namibians who are ready to work and add value to that resource bestowed by our government but NOT for selfish trade and enrichment. The fishing industry has
always welcomed new entrants and will always respect the policies and directives of our government, as the national interest must come first before the individual interest. Today, we reaffirm our support to the MFMR and call for a right allocation process where the safeguard of the existing 16,000 jobs is prioritized and the investments under our internationally recognized value adding industry are considered and protected.
Atlantic Oil Solutions keeps cyclists safe Atlantic Oil Solutions, a Walvis Bay based oil and lubricants distributor took the initiative recently to hand out several hundred reflective bibs to cyclists. The company got up early one morning and distributed the bibs as cyclists made their way in the darkness from Kuisebmond to town. “Cyclists are exposed to many dangers on the streets every day. Visibility is crucial, as many cyclists are cycling to work or back home during the dark hours every morning and every evening. We are delighted to make a difference by providing reflective clothing and in doing so promote each of these persons’ safety, said the owner of Atlantic Oil Solutions, Mr Leon van Aardt. Kobi Alexander development destroyed by thieves and vandals Eileen van der Schyff The Kobi Alexander residential development in Walvis Bay’s Union Street is the target of thieves and vandals. A concerned member of the public contacted the namib times this week after taking his dog for a walk there, he discovered a pavement damaged. Upon closer inspection he discovered the pavement was not only damaged but a hole was dug by cable thieves which removed a length of copper wire leading to a substation. “I have been walking in this area for years, and it really turned into a place of total neglect and is in a state of chaos”, this member of the public told the namib times. He added that all the light fittings have been removed from the lamp posts already, and as if that is not enough, they now even go as far as stealing copper wire. The Estate is owned by Kobi Alexander, the Israeli national that lived in Namibia for
several years whilst being wanted by the United States Government and the State of Israel for economic crimes. Alexander traveled to the United States voluntarily where he stood trial, was found guilty and handed a prison sentence. He is currently in Israel after serving his sentence in the United States and namib times was told yesterday he spends his days in Israel under house arrest.

NVV donates to His House Care Centre The Walvis Bay Branch of the “Namibiese Vroue Vereniging� (NVV), always lends a helping hand in the community whenever they can. On 24 May, tannie Lottie and Nannie handed over adult diapers to His House Care Centre, a Non-Profit-Organisation (NPO) situated in Meersig, on behalf of the NVV. The donations which were received with much gratitude and appreciation, are for residents in need. It is not a secret that our economy is at a low and for especially our elderly it puts so much more strain on their already existing financial struggle. With their small pensions it is not easy to cover all of their expenses. The public of Walvis Bay, in the recent past, opened up their wallets and various donations were made to the centre. Some of the donations were cash, meat, fruit, vegetables, clothes, adult diapers and various other items were given to them. The management of His House Care Centre wants to thank the women of the NVV from the bottom of their hearts for the donation.

Massive crane ship alongside
The crane ship Saipem 3000 is expected alongside in the port of Walvis Bay on 8 August, for a delicate lifting operation during which a subsea structure attached to the vessel itself, weighing 370 tons, will be lifted off. It is necessary to lift this structure off the vessel in order to reach certain parts of the vessel for maintenance work. Thereafter the structure will again be lifted onto the vessel and attached. A representative of the agency Logistics Support Services (LSS) said yesterday they are very satisfied with the vessel's owner's choice of Walvis Bay as the preferred port to conduct this very complex operation. LSS also expressed gratitude to the Namibian Ports Authority's (Namport) role in attracting this business to Walvis Bay. Apart from the work conducted alongside a crew change, involving 100 crew members, will also be conducted. After its time alongside at berths 7 and 8 Saipem 3000 will move to anchorage off Walvis Bay and spent time there until 22 September for other repair and maintenance work onboard. The vessel is 162 meters long and 38 metres wide.

Youth perfectly poised to infiltrate Agriculture sector

MTC Employees donate
Students, especially those who wish to venture into the agricultural sector, are currently perfectly poised to lay the foundations to ensure they succeed in that sector. The best way to see to this is to explore the various ecosystems of influential people, which ensure they are aptly prepared by the time they graduate, have a job and are ready to begin their agricultural exploits. These are the sentiments shared by Standard Bank's Business Banking Manager of Agric Business Central, Piet Bergh, as he addressed a congregation of students, prospective farmers and a few stakeholders in the sector on Thursday, 26 July. Bergh was speaking at the Youth in Agriculture conference at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST). The conference was held under the theme “Agriculture and the Generation Problem; Rural Youth, Employment and the future of farming”. Various stakeholders, including Presidential Advisor: Youth, Daisry Mathias and the UN Representative on the World Food Program, Bai Mankay Sankoh, to name a few.

Bergh explained that most graduates want to venture into agriculture directly after their tertiary studies without a proper portfolio, which is supposed to put
them at an advantage of getting the financial assistance they require. He stressed that one's personal wealth will determine their ability to sustain their venture and endure in the future. As such, students are in the right position to open their bank account and register their companies while studying because by doing this they are already building their portfolio. “Students, you need to explore your ecosystem (of influential people) to help you grow your business. Standard Bank provides the right ecosystem for you with its consultants who are willing to guide you and products tailor made for you,” he advised. Initiatives such as this conference are essential as they aid in activating the youth untapped potentials. This is essential for the Agriculture sector as it has the potential to be the largest employer. As such, Standard Bank has dedicated itself over the years to support the Agriculture sector develop; with the youth being the farmers of tomorrow, it is imperative to draw them into the fold as early as possible.

The employees from MTC Namibia come to the aid of Shafig Bardien 5-years-old from Narraville Walvis Bay that needs a new artificial eye. Shafiq was diagnosed with retinoblastoma when he was 1-year-old. In 2016 he received his first custom artificial eye and it was required to have yearly check-ups with Trümpelmann to keep track of his growth and the artificial eye. The boy also has check-ups done every 6 months to monitor that the cancer does not grow back. The Bardien family that are in need of about N$22 000 for his new artificial eye. For this reason the employees of MTC Namibia set up an employee's charity trust to assist the ones in need. The MTC employees heard the call from the Bardien family and come to their aid for Shafig as they donated
N$10 000 for his artificial eye. Tim Ekanjo from MTC said at the handing over of the donations that the gesture of all the employees to set up a charity trust is to help where it is needed and he hope that all the recipients will used their donations for what it is intend for. The Bardien family was very happy and thank the employees of MCT and promised that the money will be used to pay for Shafig's new artificial eye. His grandmother however said that the family is still in need of about N$9 000 for the eye and that the transport and accommodation is already been taken care off.

WB traffic officers shows off The Walvis Bay public is up in arms, after this footage was placed on social media of two Walvis Bay traffic officers showing off in front of school children and in the process abusing their official vehicles. The incident is believed to have been very recently. A member of the public who shared the video first expressed his dismay at the incident and also the bad example these traffic cops show for responsible driving behaviour.

Having aimed for the world record at the Namibia Land Rover Festival 2016, we realised that it would be a major challenge due to Namibia being so sparsely populated. Die Swakopmund Residents Association informiert: Eine kürzliche Visite zur DRC hat gezeigt, dass etliche Wasseranschlüsse nicht funktionieren, sodass die Einwohner zum Wasserholen sehr weit laufen müssen - und Wasser ist schwer zu transportieren. So manch einer hat dafür eine Lösung gefunden, wie sich an einigen Wasseranschlüssen zeigte: zersägte Einkaufswagen, auf denen man die Wasserbehälter füllen und leicht transportieren kann. Warum funktionieren die Wasseranschlüsse nicht? Aus städtischer Nachlässigkeit oder aber, weil an den Anschlüssen “herum-
gedoktert” wurde, um kostenlos Wasser zu bekommen? Egal, wessen Schuld es ist: Die Situation ist zum Verzweifeln. Ein weiterer Punkt der Kritik: Einkaufswagen findet man in Swakopmund querbeet, oftmals weit entfernt von den Einkaufszentren, zu denen sie gehören. Die Supermärkte sind hier nachlässig und sollten mehr Kontrolle darüber ausüben, wo ihre Einkaufswagen hingehen, zumal diese Utensilien teuer sind und letztendlich auf unserem Kassenzettel landen. Wi e g e p f l e g t d e r Dome nun aussieht mit dem neu gepflasterten Parkplatz davor! Wir hoffen, dass die Stadtverwaltung diese Auf-
gabe zu Ende führt, indem sie die Bordsteine repariert, die ebenfalls vor dem Gebäude entlanglaufen und schon lange ein Schandfleck sind. Es ist uns zu Ohren gekommen, dass 37 Geschäfte in Swakopmund geschlossen haben, eine ernste Abwärtswende für unsere schöne Stadt. Wir wollen hoffen, dass das Schlimmste vorüber ist. Unsere Straßen scheinen mit Touristen gefüllt zu sein, und wir als Einwohner dürfen keine Mühe scheuen, Swakopmund in dieser schweren Zeit zu unterstützen, indem wir unsere Ausgaben so weit wie möglich in unserem Städtchen tätigen.
Die Plotterschtorie: Farm Birkenfels Swakopmund - Tina Schröder gewährt Ihnen einen Einblick in das Leben der heutigen Swakoptaler. Die Farm Birkenfels (Nr.33) liegt im Swakoprivier, etwa zehn Kilometer vor ‘Goanikontes’. Sie ist nicht dem Stadtgebiet Swakopmund angegliedert und ist deshalb Teil des namibischen Farmlandes. Die Anfänge der Farm Birkenfels datieren zurück bis etwa 1911. Weitere Entwicklungen können dem Buch von Hartmut Fahrbach, “Das Swakoptal” entnommen werden. Liebe Küstenleser! Neulich fragte eine Dame mich, ob ich ein Los für die Namib High School kaufen wolle. Vielleicht habe ich sie mit meiner verneinender Antwort vor den Kopf gestoßen. Walvis Bay Parkrun This week Walvis Bay Parkrun celebrated their 25th event and 124 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 11 were first timers and 17 recorded new Personal Bests. All finishers received a Parkrun "medal" made of chocolate and cupcakes were handed out to all. The Event Director, Michelle Wilson, also had reason to celebrate as it was her birthday and she has also reached the Parkrun milestone of volunteering 25 times at Parkrun. The event was made possible by 13 volunteers: James Wilson, Dries Schoonbee, Eugene Crüys, Jessica Mostert, Dorothy Bachmann, Ruth Grebien, Caroline Gruhn, Chantelle De Villiers, Gail Wearne, Peter-Alan Alchin, Jenny Coraizin, Percy Van Zyl, Caitlyn Wilson.

Bowls Quadrangular Test series
The new Executive Committee of the Namibia Bowling Association
The Namibia Bowling Association will be the host for this year's Quadrangular Test series that will be held from 7 - 9 September at the Eros Bowling Club and Transnamib Bowling Club, in Windhoek. The Test series started as an Annual Test event between the National teams of Namibia and South Africa. It became a Triangular test series with the inclusion of Zimbabwe. Three years ago, South Africa entered the Junior Proteas and the competition became a Quadrangular, with South Africa's two teams, Zimbabwe and Namibia participating. Subsequently, due to lack of sponsorship, South Africa has withdrawn and Botswana has been invited. It was also decided that the host nation will be allowed to enter a National team and an Invitation team. All four disciplines, namely Fours, Triples, Pairs and Singles will be contested on a Round Robin basis. At the end of the Tournament, the Men's and Ladies' points are added together to determine the overall winners of the Test. In addition to the main test, the Senior teams (those bowlers over the age of 60) of the three countries involved will play a Triangular Test series. Their Tournament will follow the same format as that of the National teams'. At the end of the Triangular series, men's and ladies' points will be added together as well to determine the winning country. This Test series takes place every two years and is hosted, in turn, by the different participating countries. The Namibian National and Invitation teams for the Quadrangular Test were announced at the Annual Awards dinner of the Namibian Bowling Association. Namibia performs excellent Rudi Bowe
The African Youth Games (AYG) in Algiers targets the 14 to 18 age group from 54 African nations with the aim of contributing to the development of African sports and the growth of Olympic values, as well as acting as a trial run for the Olympic Games. Namibia ended ninth from the 54 countries with 3098 athletes in 35 disciplines at the third AYG. Team Namibian was represented in hockey, rugby, gymnastics, equestrian, archery, cycling, karate, tennis, triathlon and wrestling performed extremely well and beyond expectations as they won Eight Gold, Seven Silver and 13 Bronze medals for a total of 28 medals to finish ninth out of close to 54 participating countries. The gymnastics team, coached by Veselin Kostin, was the most successful code at the Games as the Gymnast won a total of 5 Gold, 2 Silver and 4 Bronze medals. In artistic gymnastics, Emil Pitt won a Gold on the vault and a Silver medal on the floor exercise. Carane van Zyl won 2 Gold in the trampoline and tumbling categories, and in the synchronised trampoline category Carane van Zyl and Thalia Loveira won the Gold and the two girls Carane and Thalia won two more Bronze in the girl's team trampoline and tumbling categories with Thalia Loveira won another Bronze medal in the tumbling category. Lance Potgieter and Kamas Nechville won Gold in the boys synchronised trampoline category. Lance Potgieter, Kamas Nechville and Zacheo van Vuuren won Bronze in the boy's team trampoline category with Lance Potgieter won Silver in the boy's trampoline category. In archery, Quinn Reddig won Gold in the girl's singles archery category and Silver with Adrian Grobler in the mixed team competition. In cycling, Alex Miller won Gold in the boy's mountain bike category. The Women's Hockey team Kiana Cormack (Captain), Sonnet Crous, Jahntwa Kruger, Danja Meyer, Tara Myburgh, Kaela Schimming, Carien Rooyen, Joane van Rooyen en CelĂŠ Wessels won Silver. Namibia's Sevens Rugby team Bernhardt Wessels (Captain), William Otto, Sarel Louw, JeandrĂŠ Loubser, Lianzo Cupido, Le Roux Booysen, !Gonteb Donell, Romario Janga, Erik Strauss, Lyle Beukes, Donavan Resandt en
Aston Mukwiilongo won Silver. In show jumping, Jessica Kreiner won Silver in the individual competition. Namibia won 1Silver and 5 Bronze medals in the swimming competition with Ronan Wantenaar won Silver in the boys 100m breaststroke, and Bronze in the 200m breaststroke he also set three new Namibian age group records as well as one Open record at the Games. Heleni Stergiadis won 4 Bronze medals in the 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke, 200m individual medley and 400m freestyle events. In athletics, Ludwig Huber won a bronze medal in the pole vault category, while in karate Mayvonne Swart won bronze and Justus Saaiman and Hafeni Asino bronze medals in Wrestling The African Youth Games served as a qualifying event for the Youth Olympic Games which take place in Argentina in October, but Namibia's team must still be finalised by the National Olympic Committee. At this stage only the archer Quinn Reddig and Namibia's women's hockey team and the Sevens rugby team have qualified, while there is also a possibility that swimmer Ronan Wantenaar has qualified. The Rock is 10-years-old The highlight for mountain-bikers, walkers and runners all over Namibia is with no doubt The Rock Spitzkoppe Community Run and Mountain Bike Challenge 2018 that will take place on 8 September 2018. This will be the 10th consecutive year that the event is being hosted at the Spitzkoppe area. The organisers are expecting an estimated of 450 entries for the tenth anniversary of the event. This is a very unique event, as it held within the domain of the Spitzkoppe. The Spitzkoppe community, represented by the Gaingu Conservancy and !Oe-Gan Traditional Authority. Give their blessing and support to the event. In contrast to many other sporting events of this nature, the focus is not on profit, but on sustainable development for the local community through sport. Orano Mining Namibia (formerly AREVA Namibia), Gecko Namibia, Herco Marketing and the ? Gaingu Conservancy is the main sponsors for this year's event. These are major players in the energy, mining and tourism sectors. The event partners have a deliberate social responsibility towards our direct stakeholders and the communities in the Erongo Region in particular. The event includes a 10 and 21 km for the runners and walkers, and 35 and 70km routes for the mountain bikers. More details on the routes will be shared with the athletes at a later stage once the route marking has been completed. A group of fat bike enthusiasts will also be cycling from Swakopmund to Spitzkoppe prior to the event, a private initiative that has become known as "The Fat Rock'. Athletes and visitors are encouraged to bring old clothing, shoes and blankets with them for donation to the local community.
Online entries are open at www.raceday.events as from 30 July until the maximum allowed entries have been received. All entrants will receive a shirt, and all finishers will receive a finisher's medal.
