Chinese businessman nabbed with three live pangolins at Walvis Bay Three Namibian accomplices also arrested Floris Steenkamp

A prominent Chinese businessman of Walvis Bay and three Namibians are expected to launch formal bail applications in the Walvis Bay magistrates court today, after their arrest on Sunday for the illegal possession of three live pangolins. Members of the Namibian Police received information of live pangolins being kept by the accused. The pangolin is an endangered species in Namibia, partly as the result of an indigenous superstition

killing the animal keeps bad luck at bay. More alarming the fact that live pangolins are smuggled to Asia for traditional healing and medicines. The person who contacted the newspaper is a well-placed source close to the

incident as well as a local activist of the Anti Plunder Action Group. The suspects were interviewed by local wildlife officials on Sunday after the arrests were made. The animals are in

“Italian tourists”scam B&B Erwin Leuschner in Swakopmund The owner of a Bed and Breakfast establishment in Swakopmund is warning similar tourism businesses of a “new” type of scam, after she lost N$3 000 to “Italian tourists” who were supposed to stay five nights at her establishment. The victim wishes to remain anonymous. The victim reported the incident to namib times in an attempt to warn other tourism establishments at the coast. “It is tourism season and many visitors are about. These people (fraudsters) continuously come up with new ideas to steal from unsuspecting people,” she said. According to her she received a telephone call last week from an alleged tour guide, informing her that he was traveling the country with six Italian tourists. “He phoned me from Uis, saying he has another tour booked and that he has to leave for Okahandja. He told me that the tourists wish to stay in Swakopmund, but they can't fuel up in Uis as they only have foreign currency (Euros) on them,” she said. The tourists were allegedly driving two rented 4x4 double cab bakkies that had been fitted with extra fuel tanks. “The tour guide asked me to look after his guests. They booked five nights at my B&B and

provided information via SMS,” she explained. Adding: “You believe these things and don't suspect anything is off. After all, tourism is our livelihood and you want to assist were you can.” She even spoke to one of the tourists who indeed had an Italian accent. “I believe they used a stolen passport’s information,” she said. The victim was instructed to e-wallet an amount of N$3 000 to a certain number, so the “tourists” could fuel up and drive to Swakopmund and then pay her back – but she never heard of them again. The cell phone number (081 876 6437) has since been discontinued. “For these people (scammers) it is so easy to get a cell phone number and steal money from unsuspecting people,” she continued. After reporting the incident to namib times she expressed intentions to make a case at the police. “I will never again take any booking via SMS,” she concluded.

Town Council denies application for B2 shopping mall Erwin Leuschner The Swakopmund Town Council denied an application for the development of a new shopping centre, hotel and office complex next to the B2 highway close to the Martin Luther museum. This decision was taken at the recent Council meeting. According to the council meeting agenda the idea for this new development was discussed with the acting Chief Executive Officer of the Municipality in June this year. The applicant is Mr Williward Narib from Ndakolute CC. “The applicant proposes the development of 15 871 square metres as the office buildings on a site of approximately seven hectares,” it states. In the Agenda it further states that the meeting was held after the initial application was submitted at the Municipality in 2014. “He (Mr Narib) was informed in 2015 that the application will have to be kept in abeyance until such time as clarification was obtained from the Hon. Pregnant mothers and mothers of infants of the Democratic Resettlement Community (DRC) in Swakopmund suffer a great deal due to lack of water, ablution and electricity, especially during the first months after they gave birth. Swakopmund Municipality Councillor Maria Elago spearheads a project of helping the pregnant women, mothers of infants and the elderly women of the DRC community by providing them with some daily necessities. Yesterday, a total of 17 Pregnant Women of the DRC Clinic received baby clothes, blankets and nappies. Twenty three mothers of infants also received some goodies, including clothes and toys. Additionally, twenty two elderly women received blankets and food hampers. Councillor Elago believes providing for a few today will provide for many tomorrow. She encouraged the women present to go out and help others in return. “This is a circle of caring and how we live in the spirit of Harambee and usher the era of prosperity for all” said Elago. In an interview with namib times Alvisia (32), a mother who have been living in DRC for over 15 years, said they (mothers of infants) experience a lot of challenges especially during the first five months after they have given birth. They are alone at home and the walking distance to the community water tap is very lengthy. “We are having problems with a lack of water. There are no ablution facilities and it is just difficult for someone who have just given birth to walk a far distance to the fetch water or to relief yourself”, she explained. Alvisia has a one month old baby. At home it is also a struggle. “We have to either struggle with gas stoves and the smell of gas is not so good for the baby or to make a fire outside the shack in the cold weather of Swakopmund due to a lack of electricity,” Alvisia explained. Adding whenever she needs water, she has to wait for the school children to return, because she has no other means of fetching water. Alvisia was very thankful for the parcel. She further said that they are also very thankful to Government for establishing a clinic which is exclusively for females. Here they receive all the attention they need from the nurses during pregnancies and also after they have given birth. Dorothia (29) also a mother of a month old baby said she came to Swakopmund to live with her boyfriend. She has been in Swakopmund for a year and a few months now. “I struggle a lot, I have no family here in Swakopmund and I have to do all chores, especially when my boyfriend is at work. I walk very far just to fetch water and luckily I have a very good neighbour who allows me to leave my baby with her while I fetch water. We are unemployed but we are very hardworking and if Government might open a project for us here in DRC that will help us generate money we will work extra hard,” says Dorothia. The ladies were all very happy to receive the items and thanked Councillor Elago.

Council was infor-med though that such a directive only applies to residential developments and as such does not apply to this development. The concept of Ndakolute was in the meantime amended as it was the initial intention to only build a hotel. During the meeting in June this year the applicant was informed that the land applied for has not been serviced or zoned as per Council's long term plan. The area has been earmarked for alternative purposes. The CEO therefore proposed that the applicant consider an alternative area in the vicinity of the western-bypass. Such an application was not submitted though. Council rejected the application at the recent meeting as the area applied for has been earmarked as a lease area for the establishment of a multi-cultural village. Council has already leased an area around the Martin Luther site to the Ovahimba cultural group, although the group has not yet established the intended village showcasing their tradition.

Geingob directs Cabinet to discuss phoshate issue Erwin Leuschner President Hage Geingob has directed a Special Cabinet meeting to take place in less than a week to discuss the ongoing phosphate debate in detail. This was revealed by George Simataa, Secretary to Cabinet, after a discussion on the issue in the National Assembly last week was blocked by Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, resulting in seven opposition members walking out. The Special Cabinet meeting is to be held on 7 November. “Subsequently, the Namibian nation will be informed of the strategic decision taken by the Government of the Republic of Namibia on the matter,” the statement compiled by Simataa reads. Geingob has now intervened in the matter after the company Namibia Marine Phosphate (NMP), a Joint Venture between Australian mining house UCL Resources Limited, Oman based Mawarid Mining LLC, and Namibian Company Havana Investments (PTY) Ltd., was issued an Environmental Clearance on 5 September. NMP's board of directors are Tariq Al Barwani, Sushil Srivastava and Knowledge Katti. “Following the granting of this licence, there have been negative reports that offshore phosphate mining may have a negative environmental impact on the aquatic life and the entire fishing

added that the issued clearance certificate indicates that the mining company (NMP) will establish its own controls (on how this mining is to be carried out to minimise aquatic ecosystem damage), an approach which is unacceptable from an official control point of view.” Esau also noted tthe clearance was issued despite the fact the opinion of the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, as the Competent Authority on this matter, “has not been considered.” “The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources is the only State organ with scientific skills, human resource capacity and facilities to competently carry out marine ecosystem assessments. The observations by our scientists were ignored,” he said. In this regard he said private findings by consultants conducting an independent Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) “were lacking in scientific

methodology, accuracy and interpretation.” Esau further said the initial 18 months long moratorium, which has in the meantime expired, was issued as Government had decided to adopt a precautionary approach when it comes to the mining of phosphates. This was due to the fact that unlike other minerals in the sea such as diamonds, marine phosphates are derived from fossils of living fish and other animals in the sea, and act as fertiliser of the sea, supporting life of smaller organisms which in turn support the rich fisheries. “We were aware at the time that marine phosphates exist in many oceans of various countries, but are not extracted on industrial scale due to the high risk to marine ecosystems that such mining poses,” he

Crime Prevention Tips for Seniors Crime and the fear of crime create special problems for the elderly. Crime prevention is everyone's responsibility, not just a job for law enforcement. Seniors can learn how to protect themselves from crime by following these simple, common sense suggestions. Share these tips with your neighbors and friends, to make it tough for criminals to work in your neighborhood. AT HOME: · Never open your door automatically. Install and use a peephole. · Lock your doors and windows. (Three quarters of the burglaries involving older persons involved unlocked doors and windows and, less than one half of these robberies are reported) Keep your garage doors locked. · Vary your daily routine. · Use "Neighbourhood Watch" to keep an eye on your neighbourhood. A concerned neighbour is often the best protection against crime, because suspicious persons and activities are noticed and reported to police promptly. · Leave lights on when going out at night. · Notify neighbors and the police when going away on a trip. Cancel deliveries and arrange for someone - a neighbor's child, perhaps - to mow the lawn if need be. · Be wary of unsolicited offers to make repairs to your home. Deal only with reputable and wellknown businesses. · Keep an inventory with serial numbers and photographs of resaleable appliances, antiques and furniture. Leave copies in a safe place. · Don't hesitate to report crime or suspicious activities. · Install deadbolt locks on all your doors. · Keep your home well lit at night, inside and out; keep curtains closed. · Ask for proper identification from delivery persons or strangers. Don't be afraid of asking . . . if they are legitimate they won't mind. · If a stranger asks to use your telephone, offer to place the call for him or her yourself. · Never let a stranger into your home. · Do not leave notes on your door when you are gone, and do not hide your keys under the mat or in other conspicuous places. · Never give out information over the phone indicating you are alone or that you won't be home at a certain time. · When you are gone for more than a day, make sure your home looks and sounds occupied, ask a family member or good friend to check up on the house regularly. · If you arrive at home and suspect a stranger may be inside, DON'T GO IN. Leave quietly and call the police immediately to report the crime. WALKING: · If you are attacked on the street, make as much noise as possible by calling for help or blowing a whistle. Do not pursue your attacker. Call the police and report the crime as soon as possible. · Avoid walking alone at night. Try to have a friend accompany you in high risk areas . . . even during the daytime. · Avoid carrying weapons . . . they may be used against you. · Always plan your route and stay alert to your surroundings. Walk confidently. · Have a companion accompany you. · Stay away from buildings and doorways; walk in well-lit areas. · Have your key ready when approaching your front door. · Don't dangle your purse away from your body.

· Don't carry large, bulky shoulder bags; carry only what you need. Better yet, sew a small pocket inside your jacket or coat. If you don't have a purse, no one will try to snatch it. WHILE SHOPPING: · Carry your wallet very close to you . . . don't dangle it from your arm. Never leave your wallet in a shopping cart. Never leave your purse unattended. · Don't carry any more cash than is necessary. · Don't display large sums of cash. · Use cheques where possible. IN YOUR CAR: · Always keep your car doors locked, whether you are in or out of your car. Keep your petrol tank full and your engine properly maintained to avoid breakdowns. · If your car breaks down, pull over, raise the hood, and wait INSIDE the car for help. Avoid getting out of the car and making yourself a target before police arrive. · At stop signs and traffic lights, keep the car in gear. · Travel well-lit and busy streets. Plan your route. · Don't leave your wallet or handbag on the seat beside you; put it on the floor, where it is more difficult for someone to grab it. · Lock bags in the trunk. If interesting packages are out of sight, a thief will be less tempted to break in to steal them. · When returning to your car, check the front and back seat before entering. · Never pick up hitchhikers. BANKING: · Many criminals know exactly when pension cheques arrive each month, and may pick that day to attack. Avoid this by using a direct deposit if available, which sends your money directly from the government to the bank of your choice. · Never withdraw money from your bank accounts for anyone except YOURSELF. Be wary of con artists and get-rich schemes that probably are too-good-to-be-true. · You should store valuables in a Safe Deposit Box. · Never give your money to someone who calls on you, identifying himself as a bank official. A bank will never ask you to remove your money. Banks need the use of your money, and they don't want one of their customers to invite crime by having large amounts of cash around. · When someone approaches you with a getrich-quick-scheme involving some or all of YOUR savings, it is HIS get-rich-quickscheme. If it is a legitimate investment, the opportunity to contribute your funds will still be there tomorrow after you have had time to consider it. · If you have been swindled or conned, report the crime to your local police or Prosecuting Attorney's office. Con-artists count on their victim's reluctance to admit they've been duped, but if you delay you help them get away. Remember, if you never report the crime, they are free to cheat others again and again and you have no chance of ever getting your money back.

Swakop Lions donate NCCI launches raffle to raise funds to improve branch activities two Rollators Erwin Leushner

The Swakopmund branch of the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) and its media partner West Coast FM (WCFM) have launched a unique raffle competition titled “80 Days to Christmas”. There are many great prizes up for grabs with one lucky ticket holder eventually walking away with the grand prize, a Hyundai i10 valued at N$165 000. The raffle competition was officially launched last week at various spots in Swakopmund. A total of 50000 Raffle Tickets have been printed. The raffle tickets will be sold at N$100 each, making it affordable for every Namibian to take part at the various activation points throughout the next “80 Days to Christmas.” The funds raised from this raffle will be used to improve some of the NCCI's branch activities with Business Training Workshops for SME's, Networking Events and Informative Breakfast Meetings. These activities are in line with the role of NCCI of promoting prosperity for all Namibians by ensuring a balanced economy. In total there are 20 prizes which will be given away each day from 5 December until 21 December. The draw of the “The Big One” will take place on 24 December. Besides the car, partly sponsored by

Associated Motor Holdings Namibia/Hyundai Namibia, the top three prizes include Air Namibia return flights for two to Durban including accommodation valued at N$14 000 and a Swivel Chair from Nictus valued at N$14 000. Sales will take place at all sponsors' outlets as well as at major shopping centres in Swakopmund, local schools and at a number of other institutions throughout the 80 Days. The Swakopmund Lions Club recently donated two Rollator Walkers to two seniors at the Welwitschia Old Age Home in Swakopmund. Artemis calls on Saturday

The passenger vessel Europa called at Walvis Bay on Sunday and yesterday, the first passenger liner for the summer season. Street vendors set up their stalls at the port of Walvis Bay’s South Gate already by Sunday morning, not to miss any opportunity to sell the visiting passengers African curio. Tour operators took passengers on pre-booked excursions of the Namib as well as Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, whilst many of the disembarked passengers strolled through Walvis Bay’ streets visiting landmarks such as the lagoon and to do shopping. Youth Policy: It’s Bike Club challenges other clubs time for action to donate blood Erwin Leuschner

The input of the stakeholders, especially members of the Swakopmund youth, were welcomed as this policy will directly influence them. Youth Development Officer, Mrs Sabina Kathena identified several key areas the policy will address: poverty, youth economic participation, youth health and welfare, youth sports and recreation, youth education and skills development and youth civic and political participation. Added Kathena: “the first step in developing this plan was a baseline study which was aimed at finding out the status quo of the youth in Swakopmund. After the baseline study we moved on to developing a strategy and policy. What we are here today for is part of the action plan we want to develop based on this policy. The youth will be part and parcel of this Action Plan.”

Santa Shoe Box a huge success After the last minute change to the venue, it was evident that the Walvis Bay community stayed committed. All donors, some as far as from Swakopmund, made it to the drop off point. Members of the West Coast Bikers Group in Swakopmund donated blood on Friday in an attempt to raise awareness of the importance of donating blood and to address the blood shortage in the country. The group has challenged other motorbike clubs to follow suit. The group decided on the initiative after one of their own was involved in a motor bike accident a few weeks ago and required a blood transfusion. “We realised there is a grave shortage of blood. We, as riders are very exposed on the roads and see the need of donating. We wish to make a positive difference,” said prominent Swakopmund Doctor Wolfgang Tietz

The group met at the mobile blood donation clinic set up at the Shoprite shopping complex were they all donated blood. “There are many misconceptions about donating blood,” Tietz continued. “Some people are afraid of the needle, which is nonsense as it doesn't hurt at all.” It was his 113th time to donate blood. The club has in the meantime challenged other motorbike clubs in the country to do the same. “We challenged the Harley Davidson Chapter, who will in turn challenge the BMW Club,” he said. “Many people are not aware of the blood transfusion services and don't really care about it. That is until the day you urgently need blood,” he continued.

Huis Palms inbrake /Hans de Jager Ek skryf na aanleiding van die reeks Minister waar ons om hulp aangeklop het. inbrake by Huis Palms wat plaasgevind Danksy Me Gwen Botes is vingerafdrukke gevind op die verpakking van ‘n gesteelde het die naweek van 2-3 Januarie 2016. Twee verdagtes waarvan die een persoon werksaam was by Huis Palms is later aangekeer in die diefstalsaak van Me Joan Botes ook van Huis Palms. Dit is my pa, Hans de Jager wat besteel is by Huis Palms. Dit is met groot hartseer dat ek die lesers se aandag op 'n paar gebeure rondom die diefstalle van Huis Palms wil vestig. My pa en my ma was jare inwoners van Huis Palms. My pa was gelukkig in sy laaste jare by Huis Palms waar hy veilig gevoel het. Hans de Jager was 'n hardwerkende, eerbare persoon gewees was enige iets gedoen het om die pot aan die kook te kon hou. Hy het tot 'n week voor sy dood nog gewerk. My pa is besteel deur 'n werknemer van Huis Palms terwyl hy op sy sterfbed gelê het in Windhoek. Nadat ons bewus geraak het van die diefstal by sy woonstel het ons dit aangemeld by die Bestuur van Huis Palms. Min wetend dat daar nog vier ander diefstalgevalle was. Die Bestuur van Huis Palms het eers alle vingers na ons as familie gewys en was van dag een af op die verdediging. Ons het verskeie kere die Bestuur asook ALLE direksielede van Huis Palms genader vir hulp en om ons as familie tegemoet te kom omdat my pa beroof was van ongeveer R100,000.00 se goedere. Die Direkteure asook die Bestuur van Huis Palms het AL die diefstalsake asook die afdanking van die werknemer wat verantwoordellik was vir die diefstalle by Huis Palms vir een direkteurslid gegee om te hanteer omdat hy vertroud was met die regsproses. Hier het ons familie se stryd begin. En spesfiek myne teen hierdie betrokke direkteur van Huis Palms. Maande van afkraking, vernedering, beledings teistering op selfoon en op email en duisende Rande se prokureurskostes. ‘n Sekuriteitsfirma wat by Huis Palms was is weggejaag. Die namib times se nuusredakteur moes dit ook maande lank ontgeld met beledigings en dreigemente deur hierdie betrokke direkteur. Nadat ons geskik het met Huis Palms se versekeraar het hierdie betrokke direkteur die arrogansie gehad en aan ons as kinders die volgende boodskap gestuur: “Die skelms het gewen en lag vir ons [julle] wat reg en regverdigheid wou laat geskied! Die direkteur roem daarop dat hy op soveel rade in die Walvisbaai-gemeenskap dien, maar dit is sy ware gesig. En die polisie? Die polisie het die minimaal gedoen in al vyf diefstalsake by Huis Palms. Geen vingerafdrukke, minimale verklarings en geen verdere ondersoeke is gedoen deur die polisie nie. Ons as families moes alles dryf en moes die hulp inroep van die Teen Korrupsie Eenheid. Ons het tot briewe geskryf vir die

borsspeld. Ook het mev. Botes aangedring op selfoonrekords van haar gesteelde selfoon. So is die verdagtes wat by al vyf die inbrake betrokke was, aangekeer. Beide persone het al drie keer in die hof verskyn. Nou word die saak elke keer uitgestel “vir verdere ondersoek”. Wat die polisie gaan ondersoek weet ek nie. As hulle dit nie gedoen het kort na die inbrake nie, waarom nou skielik? En die skelms? Hulle loop vry rond want hulle het niks om te vrees nie omdat hulle van die begin af beskerm word deur hierdie direkteur. En Huis Palms? Waar kan ons gaan kla wat nog 'n oorblywende ouer het waar weens haar omstandighede daar MOET bly? Die betrokke direkteur wat namens Huis Palms opgetree het intussen uit die Raad van Huis Palms bedank. Die res van die direkteure? Hulle WIL LIEWER nie betrokke raak nie!!! Ons as families? Ons vrae bly onbeantwoord. Ons word ignoreer deur Huis Palms se Bestuur en hulle direkteure wat oorgebly het. Die Voorsitter het na die skikking vriendellik aangebied dat ek hom in die toekoms moet nader as iets pla! Tot op hede het die Voorsitter nog nie my vrae “wat pla” beantwoord nie. My grootste vraag: Waarom is die bybetaling vir die eis wat Huis Palms se versekeraar moes uitbetaal vir die skade wat my pa se boedel weens die inbrake gely het uit die ouetehuis se fondse geneem? Dit was die die oumense wat my pa besteel het nie. Inteendeel was dit nie vir hierdie sekere direkteur se arrogansie nie, sou ons nooit die ouetehuis vir skade verantwoordelik gehou het nie. My dagvaardiging was gemik teen die twee verdagtes asook die direkteur wat hulle beskerm het, en wat verantwoordelik was vir die gemors waarin ons familie beland het! As hierdie direkteur sy volle samewerking gegee het van die begin af om die skelms vas te trek sou dit nie vir my nodig gewees het om 'n prokureur aan te stel nie. Nou loop die skelms glimlaggend vry buite rond, die direkteur het net bedank en die ouetehuis moes 'n deel betaal het van my groot prokureursonkostes! Die direkteure asook die Bestuur was verskeie kere gewaarsku teen hierdie werknemer dat sy 'n geskiedenis het van steel en steeds het die direkteure en Bestuur toegelaat dat sy by Huis Palms werk. Self snags onwettig op Huis Palms se perseel bly met haar vriend wat nou saam met haar oor die inbrake in die sop is. THE DOME CLASSIC

The Dome, Swakopmund, held its first Dome Classic from the 20th-22nd October 2016. This event was a Sport/ Lifestyle and Fitness Expo with the main event being the first ever Bodybuilding Competition hosted at the Coast. Local runners were thrilled to be able to spend quality time with marathon legend, Bruce Fordyce, hearing his stories, getting running tips, and going on a fun run alongside this nine times Comrades marathon winner. Okkert Brits, South African Olympic pole vaulter, amused his audience with details of how he started out as an athlete and Ebrahim Moerat talked about “Creating the ideal Youth Sports Environment” and spent time with teachers from various schools. They were joined at the Welwitschia stadium on the Friday afternoon by Namibian rugby hero's Jacques Burger and Tinus du Plessis, where kids from a number of local schools, after listening to a talk by Bruce Fordyce, got the opportunity to interact with them while practicing rugby passes and sprinting techniques. Thursday night was dedicated to our Namibian sports stars – local athletes who are World Champions, Olympic and Paralympic competitors. DeWet Moolman (karate), Michelle Vorster (MTB cyclist), Gaby Ahrens (shooting), Ruben Soroseb (paralympic power lifter) were joined by Jacques Burger and Tinus du Plessis, Alethea Borman (bodybuilding), Danny Boy (boxing) and residents Dave Hammond

(ice & inline hockey) and Gildo Leite (olympic track runner). The audience heard their stories and got insight into vastly different sports. Bruce Fordyce finished this special evening with his humerous talk about his experiences as a marathon runner. Afterwards, in a relaxed atmosphere everyone got the opportunity to mingle and get autographs. A VIP Breakfast started off Friday's events where attendees could socialise with various sports stars before being treated to a magic show by Seth the Magician, who delighted spectators all weekend. On Friday night, Riaan and Vasti Manser gave a long and interesting talk about their adventures, from their recent world record achieved while on honeymoon rowing from California to Hawaii, and their four and a half months row across the Atlantic Ocean to New York. Riaan shared his experiences circumnavigating Africa on his bicycle, and rowing around Madagascar and Iceland. A true explorer, without media back-up! A Cross-fit competition ran most of Saturday with competitors testing their strength and endurance. The bodybuilders were weighed in and able to spend time with bodybuilding sensations Marius and Annelize Döhne, and Dylan Ridley, in preparation for the Bodybuilding Competition. Jacques Burger shared personal experiences and talked about his rugby career. Riaan and Vasti Manser spoke again about their adventures. The

Bodybuilding Competition drew a large audience, with a packed venue and great crowd interaction. The judges were South African body builders Marius & Annelize Döhne, Dylan Ridley, Michelle Israel and our own Namibian body building professional Alethea Borman. Swakopmund Pool Club collected gold medals and a trophy at Rundu this past weekend Sharlien Tjambari This past weekend the Swakopmund Pool Club went to play in Rundu against Rundu Pool Club. The Swakopmund Pool Club beat Rundu with 17/15 points in their own backyard. Georgie Witbooi, a Swakopmund player was the player of the tournament after defeating Phillipus, also from the Swakopmund Pool Club in the play-offs. Swakopmund Pool Club won the two first sets 5/3, draw the third set with 4/4 and lost the fourth sets by 5/3 which gave the win to Swakopmund Pool Club at 17/15. “This was a well deserve win from the team from the Coast seeing that Rundu Pool Club was the winning champions in the past and were an undefeated team until this past Saturday's clash and due to long distances between towns the team have to travel and we are asking for companies and the community for their humble assistance in any kind of form and we thank everyone that made this past weekend trip a reality� said Jurgen the Team Captain of Swakopmund Pool Club. The Swakopmund Pool Club will also be hosting their annual Pool Christmas Cup which is scheduled to take place on 167 December and pool teams from all over the the country can enter a team of four players with a maximum of two subs.

Swakop swimmers bring home 16 medals Erwin Leuschner Some of the best swimming talent Namibia has to offer was in action at the Old Mutual National Swimming Short Course Championships which took place recently at the Water Cube in Swakopmund. A total of 151 swimmers from five clubs took part in 18 different events (excluding finals). The most entries stemmed from Dolphins Swimming Club (92), followed by the Namib Swimming Academy (17), the Swakopmund Swimming Club (16), Aqua Swimming and Fitness Club (14) and the Oranjemund Sand Sharks (12). The Championships consisted of the 50m and 100m Freestyle, Breaststroke, Backstroke, Butterfly and the 100m Individual Medly. Swakopmund swimmers swam a total of 43 finals in the respected age groups and won a total of 16 medals: two gold, seven silver and seven bronze. With this medal count Swakopmund was ranked 3rd in this championships. 83 personal best times was set by these coastal swimmers.

The most medals from the Swakopmund Swimming Club took Ansone Boshoff from the Pro-Ed Akademie home: three silver and five bronze. Danielle Mostert, also a learner at Pro-Ed Akademie, won five medals (two gold, one silver and two bronze). Max Betts from the Private School Swakopmund (PSS) won a silver medal, while Benjamin Lange from PSS brought one silver and one bronze medal home. Forming part of the event was the annual NASU prize giving ceremony where various swimmers received awards for outstanding performance during the year. Ansone Boshoff was rated third in her age group (best 15/16 year old) and third in the Larry Laursen trophy (long course season). Dehan van der Merwe was rated third in the category most improved Male 13/over. Max Betts received a certificate for his participation at the Level 1 gala in Cape Town early this year. Kyle Herbst won the trophy for best u/12 Female for Most Improved swimmer. Ashley Louw won the trophy for best 13/over Female for Most Improved.
