The Namibia Institute of Mining and Technology is not in a financial position to pay salaries for February 2019, a leaked memorandum indicates. This is a repeat situation after employees were also not paid in time at several occasions since November 2018. In what can only be described as gallant and genuinely committed to their employer, NIMT employees say they will continue to work as usual and expressed dire hope the situation can be resolved in order for everyone to honour their personal financial responsibilities. The memorandum,
dated 25 February 2019 read as follows: “With deep regret we need to advise you that, at this point in time, NIMT does not have the financial means to enable us to pay the February 2019 salaries, which are due and payable today�. Commenting on the issue, the Executive Director of NIMT Eckhart Mueller states

S.A. citizens in accident Coastal residents reel in shock after the unexpected and tragic death in a car accident on Tuesday night of Mr Carl Frederick (Koos) Venter (57), the owner of Aluminium Werkstatt in Walvis Bay. Mr. Venter (pictured above with his wife Anna Maria) shortly after 20:00 on Tuesday drove with a light pickup to the light industrial area to set the alarm at his business. Swakop Uranium threatened with legal action this week against the person, or any persons, behind a leaked recording in which the Governor of Erongo, Clr. Cleophas Mutjavikua, allegedly advised the mining company behind closed doors on possible ways to outsmart the Mine Workers Union of Namibia (MUN) to back out of some sticky points in the current wage negotiations. The recording went viral on social media this week resulting in calls for the resignation of Governor Mutjavikua and also the Mine Workers Union of Namibia feeling affronted by this move which is against the spirit of free bargaining and mutual faith. This year NIMT accepted over 7 000 applications for its various campuses across the country, whilst some 5 000 applications have been rejected. The registration and induction process will start on 8 March. “I am more concerned about the number of young people who will be at home without schooling this year. We have rejected 5 000 applications because there is no space. We are full”, added Mueller. Mueller also said NIMT is an institution that comes a long way and salaries have never been an issue and this is one reason why they understand the issue [for now].

apologised, adding it was never his intention to cause any harm and said at no point did he contemplate any worker to lose his or her job. SU in a statement acknowledged the wage negotiation has been going since 15 October last year and some differences arose. One of the main sticking points are the percentage wage increase. Governor Mutjavikua was invited to act as mediator to clear the differences, according to the statement. According to the statement Governor Mutjavikua called for separate one on one meetings with the MUN and with SU. A recording surfaced this week which seems to have been made during the one on one session between the Governor and SU. The recording suggests Governor Mutjavikua suggested a number of ways exist to use clauses in the Labour Act to circumvent some sticky issues. These suggestions bear down to undermining the Mine Workers Union of Namibia, according to critics. One of the suggestions were allegedly to use the excuse of organisational restructuring [and by implication retrenchments] which could render points of difference from the side of the Union obsolete. Potentially damaging allegations are further that Governor Mutjavikua ruled out any intervention by President Hage Geingob in the matter, as this is election year and the vote of Mineworkers Union members are needed. In the statement this week SU neither denies a closed-door [“caucus”] meeting took place between the mining company and the Governor nor that the recording is not authentic. What SU does deny is that the mining company made the recording nor that a third person were asked to make such recording. It is further denied that SU made any information available to such third party. In the statement SU condemns the recording and threatens with legal action against the person responsible. It does indicate more than one perpetrator are involved, but does not state whether these are SU employees. Four men were arrested for the alleged hunting and killing of five mountain Zebras in the Namib-Naukluft Park. The four men aged 36, 25, 19 and 17 appeared in the Walvis Bay Magistrate Court on Monday this week on charges of poaching of protected wildlife species, in this case Mountain Zebra. The value of the five Zebras is N$18 400. All the car-casses were recovered. The names of the suspects are as follows: Raymond Ani-man (36), Herberta Kham (25), Marley Ana-Mab (19) and a 17year-old. Hartmann's Mountain Zebra is Namibia's only endemic large mammal and a protected species in Namibia. Hartmann's populations in Namibia are healthy but they still numbered only about 25000 in 2002 mainly in protected areas, conservancies and farms devoted partly and wholly to wildlife.
Accident on the C 28 gravel road Two South African men are recovering in the Cottage Hospital in Swakopmund after the driver lost control of the vehicle they were traveling in and it overturned. It is alleged that on Wednesday 27 February Edmund John Hendricks (64) and Chellan Daniel (58) were traveling on the C 28 gravel road from Windhoek to Swakopmund when the accident happened approximately 73 km from Swakopmund. This was around 14:25. The two men were taken to the Cottage Private Hospital. Mr Hendricks sustained only slight injuries while Mr Daniel is recovering from serious head injuries. He is in a stable condition.

Gender equality workshop for women in regional councils a need Sharlien Tjambari
Wednesday marked the official opening of the three-day training workshop on Enhancing Gender Equality and Women Empowerment in Namibia: Capacity Building of Women in Women in Regional Councils.

The training aimed at analysing how intra-party democracy processes are gendered to promote women participation and representation in local councils; identifying how intra-party regulatory frameworks impede on women representation and participation in decision making organs of political parties at regional level; unpacking comparative regional and international experiences to enhance women active political participation and representation at local council level; and defining actionable recommendations that will inform strategies for intraparty regulatory reforms to promote women representation at local council level. The Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare and the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) has collaborated on several initiatives to enhance gender equality and women participation in Namibia, including partnership in conducting capacity building training sessions for women in politics at least once a year since 2017. The training sessions targets women parliamentarians, senior women political leaders, female mayors and young women in political parties. Wilhencia Uiras the Executive Secretary for the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare said the workshop is organised to create a platform for collective reflection and consensus building by political party representatives and to foster the compliance with the national constitutional, regional and international commitments in the attainment of gender of equality.
In his statement delivered by Councillor Benitha Imbamba the constituency councillor of Arandis Constituency, the Chairperson of the Erongo Regional Council Hafeni Ndemula said: “This workshop has come at the right time as Namibia is preparing to go to the polls for general and presidential elections later this year. And this should be seen as one of the major steps by the government through the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, which has the mandate to ensure gender equality and equitable socio-economic development of women, men and the wellbeing of children in Namibia. This initiative will assist us as we prepare for any elections that may take place; to ensure that all political parties include women in their political party lists from the top and not just somewhere at the end of the list”. In conclusion Ndemula mentioned that Namibia cannot continue to speak about gender equality and equal representation of men and women in politics and decision making without involving women. “We work together and walk the talk for us to go somewhere”. The workshop was attended by Local Authority Councillors and officials from the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance. The leaders shared some statistics of women and men representation in regional councils and also overview and trends on women's political participation and representation in Namibia. The workshop ends today (Friday) with key recommendations and way forward.

Husab: “Accident in the wait” Sharlien Tjambari
Employees at Husab Mine downed tools this week over what they describe as a loss of trust in the drilling and blasting contractor. Workers argue their safety is at risk as a result of alleged malpractice by this contractor, Beifang Mining Services. Employees’ position at the time of going to press was that the tools down status would remain until the situation is resolved. In at least one incident explosives that did not go off during earlier blasting were set-off by later excavation work. “An accident waiting to happen”, described a worker the situation on Wednesday. Employees backed their industrial action with a petition to the management of Swakop Uranium (SU), the owner of Husab Mine. The petition was handed to management during a peaceful demonstration on Tuesday at the mine. “We learnt with dismay that a number of potential safety incidents relating to the use and handling of explosives. No firm action is taken from your office to address Beifang's non-compliance. Yet, you are fast to suspend mining operations, because an operator drove over the safety berm while suffering driver fatigue”, said Timo Katjiuaende, the Mine Workers Union - Swakop Uranium Branch Chairperson. The petition was addressed to Cai Yusheng, the Chief Executive Officer of Swakop Uranium. According to the employees, a total of twelve safety and quality incidents, relating to the handling of explosives and blasting activities, took place at the mine between 2017 and now. Recently, on 27 February an unexploded device primed with two live detonators was discovered by an excavator operator. Earlier, on 12 February a hydraulic shovel was loading haul truck, allegedly detonating a blasting device as the shovel bucket struck the device. SU management charge the incident was reported to the Chief Inspector of Mines, as per regulation. However, the employees feel that if this was the case, on what basis was the operations at the Mine not stopped. At least for an investigation as this had the potential to cause multiple casualties. As if these incidents were not enough cause of concern, an uncontrolled blast went off in the pit where a maintenance crew was working on a rope shovel’s track pads. “This is unacceptable practice managing explosives and blasting operations”, said Katjiuaende. Beifang Mining operations at Husab Mine was on 2 November suspended as a result of poor blasting fragmentation achieved during one of their blasting projects. Then again the service provider was on the red carpet after a series of misfires. Katjiuaende further explained to date not Beifang nor the SU top management is in position to give assurance to employees that no unexploded ordinance are still present that could lead to injuries, death and loss of equipment whilst work is carried out. Employees strongly believe that the Chinese expatriates are undermining the authority of local experts, causing safety incidents. Workers demand the CEO and the Board of Directors of Swakop Uranium to terminate the services of all Chinese expatriates and train and replace them with Namibians. “Failure to do that will leave us with no choice but to exercise our rights as employees in line with chapter 4, section 42 of the Namibian Labour Act 11 of 2007. Mr Cai you cannot continue ignoring our safety concerns. As a CEO of the company, you should also consider changing your bossy behaviour towards employees. Failing, you will be dealt with in the line with the Namibian laws”, threatens workers in the petition. Yusheng is accused of unfairness and inconsistency. Chinese employees are allegedly allowed what locals aren't allowed. An example: A Chinese employee can allegedly handle explosives whilst carrying a cell phone. The carrying of a cell phone when handling explosives is prohibited. Yusheng promised the management will have meet with the Mine Workers Union leadership for a solution. Cannabis farm under everyone's noses Two people have been nabbed in Swakopmund over the weekend for running a cannabis farm in the backyard of their home in the town's Kramersdorf neighbourhood. Police found a total of 71 producing cannabis plants, a further 3,664 kilograms of dried cannabis, an undisclosed number of cannabis seeds and cannabis oil. Cheryl Antoinette Green (57) and Dylan Adriaan van Wyk (21) made a first appearance in the Swakopmund magistrate's court yesterday on charges of dealing in cannabis and possession of the illicit drug. Financial Boost for Young Talents Reptile Mineral Resources and Exploration (Pty) Ltd (RMR) in collaboration with its partner the Japanese Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) donated N$75 000 to Mondesa Youth Opportunities (MYO). A hundred and twenty learners at Mondesa Youth Opportunities ranging from Grade 4 to 8 received extra instruction in English, Mathematics, Reading, Life Skills, Computers, Sports and Music, every afternoon after school for a period of 5 years. MYO targets high-achieving learners from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds and cultivates positive thinking and high-selfesteem to lay the path for a future generation of forward-thinking Namibian leaders. MYO is a non-profit organisation (NPO), registered in Namibia that operates entirely on donations. “Your donation allows MYO to offer free intensive educational intervention for students from underprivileged schools in Swakopmund. In der 5000 Einwohner großen Siedlung Aroab, die 35 km westlich des Grenspostens Rietfontein zu Südafrika und 170 km südöstlich von Keetmanshoop liegt, sind kürzlich 165 mm Regenfall gemessen worden. Dieses wunderschöne Foto des fließenden, grün umsäumten Fischflusses mit Köcherbaum im Vordergrund, vom Nordrand des Fischriver-Canyons aus aufgenommen, ist von Mannfred Goldbeck/Gondwana Collection Namibia gemacht worden.

Elektrisierende Überraschung Liebe Küstenleser! Stellen Sie sich vor, Sie leben in Kapstadt und merken abends, dass kein Wasser aus ihrem Hahn über der Badewanne kommt. Was würden Sie tun? Wahrscheinlich erst einmal versuchen, die Ursache herauszufinden, oder? Und wenn Sie von Ihren Nachbarn vernommen haben, dass das kostbare Nass bei denen lustig aus den Hähnen sprudelt und ihre trockene Badewanne also nichts mit der Kapstädter Wasserkrise zu tun hat, was dann? Würden Sie es wagen, “Ihren” Klempner um 20h30 Uhr abends anzurufen und ihn zu sich zu bestellen? Wohl kaum, denn der würde Ihnen höchstwahrscheinlich die Leviten lesen, dass es eine Unverschämtheit sei, ihn nach Geschäftsschluss und dann noch zu nächtlicher Stunde zu behelligen. Wie gut, liebe Leser, dass wir an der namibischen Küste leben, denn hier in unseren Nam-Städtchen passieren noch Wunder. Nach meinem abendlichen Joggen stellte ich zu Hause fest, dass ich im Gegensatz zu meinem Umfeld keinen Strom hatte. Mit Solar-Campinglampe in der Hand untersuchte ich die Schalttafel und entdeckte, dass der Erdschlussschalter (Earth-Lea-
kage-Switch) bei jedem Versuch, ihn anzuschalten, die Sicherung auslöste. Mmh, ob ich es wohl wagen dürfte, “meinen” Elektriker Deon um 20h30 Uhr noch anzurufen und zu fragen, was da zu machen sei? Nee, das geht doch nicht. Der braucht schließlich seinen entspannten Feierabend nach einem Tag des Malochens, umringt von all dem Eletrosmog. Andererseits ist es keine schöne Voraussicht, so einen A-
bend im Dunkeln zu tapsen, mit einem langsam auftauenden Eisschrank, ohne Telefon und Wifi, keiner warmen Mahlzeit im Bauch und ohne die Klassik-Sendung im Radio...ach, ich ruf ihn jetzt einfach an. Und wrachtach wahr, er riss sich zu Hause von seiner Pfanne los, in der gerade sein Abendessen nach einem Besuch im Gym brutzelte, und stand 15 Minuten später in seinen Sportklamotten
Mal, dass er ohne Gemecker und Klagerei sofort auf meinen Notruf reagierte obwohl eigentlich nur die Firma davon profitiert! Wie gesagt, können Sie sich vorstellen, dass so etwas in Berlin oder Tokio möglich ist? Wohl kaum, denn

Es stellte sich heraus, dass der Schalter defekt war, und somit bastelte Deon mir eine provisorische Überbrückungsleitung bzw. einen “Bypass”, sodass ich meine Klassiksendung im Radio nicht zu verpassen brauchte und obendrein noch warm baden konnte. Nun verlangt die Firma, bei der Deon arbeitet, für solch eine “Nach-Geschäftsschluss-Arbeit” eine beachtlich höhere Gebühr als für den Rufbereitschaftsdienst innerhalb der normalen Geschäftszeiten. Das kommt aber nicht Deon selbst zugute, sondern nur der Firma. Gerade deshalb schätze ich es um so mehr, dass “mein” Elektriker, ohne mit der Wimper zu zucken, (zumindest vor mir) sofort kam. Und außerdem war dies nicht das erste
abgesehen von den Abständen, die ein Elektriker oder Klempner dort zurücklegen müsste, wird doch kaum einer der stressgeladenen Großstadtberufler seinen heiligen Feierabend UMSONST aufopfern, oder? Nun, “mein” Elektriker Deon aus Swakopmund ist jedenfalls gekommen, und das ist ein weiterer Grund, warum ich mich so “proudly Namibian” fühle und so gerne an unserer Küste lebe. Ihre Susann Kinghorn

Michael Behnke scoped five awards at the Walvis Bay Motor Club award ceremony in the harbour town. At the event the chairman of the club, Jan Everson said that the motor club is in a good and healthy financial state. The club will host the Swakopmund Rally on 16 March and the Walvis Bay Rally on 13 July. Walvis Bay Motor Club is also planning the yearly quarter mile race (drags) on Easter Saturday in Walvis Bay. Lesley !Hoabeb and Delano Müller, instructors at the Namibia RCFAI & Kickboxing Academy in Walvis Bay held a successful awareness demonstration in Self-Defense at the International School of Walvis Bay (ISWB). The aim of the demonstration was to teach the learners of ISWB the following life skills: Control, confidence, respect, focus, concentration, discipline and leadership. Delano said that a lot of children know how it is to be bullied and that it's not a good feeling as it makes you feel insecure, humiliated and very uncomfortable and has the power to destroy you mentally and physically. “I have also been a victim of bullying, but sport helped me to cope with these situations and turned it into something positive Delano said. He went on by saying: “Trough sport and games, confidence is built to help one cope with these situations. It brings a sense of improvement, accomplishment and a feeling of personal progress. We sometimes just need a place where we can get away from our troubles and sports is a great way of doing just that”. Delano Müller, told the learners to always control their emotions:· Recognize the emotion · Don't react on the emotion · Identify the reason for the emotion · Project the consequences of the possibilities · Then make the right choice This was very good for the school and many learners gathered to learn more about Self-Defense. The Interschool Tournament for children and juniors will be hosted by the Reiterverein Swakopmund (RVS) from 1-3 March.

The draws are up, the plaits are in and 27 riders and 42 horses are currently conducting their final preparations to compete in the Interschool Tournament. Friday, 1 March, is set aside for the riders briefing as well as allowing weary horses and riders to settle in. The Pony Rider Preliminaries and Novices, NAMEF Lollipop Test, Junior Preliminaries and Novices, Pony Rider Elementary, Course Walk, Time Slalom Race as well as various height competitions are set to take place tomorrow. The day will end with an X-Country Fun Competition. Riders will compete in a variety of competitions including Precision and Speed, High Jump, 36 Point Accumulator ending with a final parade and prize giving on Sunday 3 March. The participating schools are Alexanders Private School, International School Walvis Bay, Wolsey Hall Oxford, Pro Ed Akademie, Privat Schule Swakopmund, Windhoek Gymnasium, Deusche Hoehere Privat Schule, Edugate Academy, Namib High School, Namib Primary School and The Dolphin Schools.
