Test drive on bike ends in tragedy

Isaac Chikose The community of Walvis Bay was stunned by the unexpected and tragic death on Tuesday night of Elgrego Swartz (28), a much loved resident of the harbour town. Swartz was test driving a motorbike in Swakopmund, with the option to buy it, but he lost control of the bike and it crashed into a boundary wall killing him on impact.

Swartz is believed to have seen the bike advertised on sale on Facebook and on Tuesday travelled with a friend to Swakopmund to have a look at the motorcycle and to test it. The bike (N119570W) was shown to him at a house in Swakopmund's Ocean View and he took it from there on a test drive shortly after 21:00. It is believed Swartz lost control of the silver Yamaha motorcycle within seconds after he started the test drive and it crashed into a boundary wall of a nearby residence. Swartz is believed to have succumbed of serious head injuries. Swartz leaves behind his father, mother, sister & brother.

Standard Bank products to deepen ties between Sino-Namibian businesses Standard Bank is working on a number of banking products, facilities that would help deepen trade ties between Chinese and Namibian businesses, Annelie Cloete, Standard Bank's Corporate, and Investment Banking Chinese Relationship Manager has said. She said the bank's relationship with Chinese businesses has come a long way since the inception of the Association of Chinese Enterprises in Namibia in 2016. The Standard Bank Group is 20 percent owned by China's biggest bank by assets, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC). Through this strategic partnership, the bank is increasingly exploring opportunities to expand cooperation into new areas of business. “We want to use this bond to help our Chinese business community in Namibia not only to network, but also to transact and do business in a more seamless manner,” Cloete said. “In retail banking, we are working together to introduce new solutions to facilitate personal remittances between Namibia and China. This will enable online person-toperson and businessto-business direct international payments and will be managed by dedicated specialist teams, improving convenience and reducing costs for our customers.” Cloete said Standard Bank has already developed products for Namibian companies doing business with China, including hedging facilities in

both USD and Chinese Yuan currencies, Customer Foreign Currency accounts for the appropriate currencies, electronic foreign exchange trading platform (eMarket), individual salary payments in Yuan or USD and letters of credit. To further demonstrate the special relationship between Standard Bank and the Chinese community in Namibia, the bank donated N$50,000 towards the hosting of the Chinese New Year gala dinner, which was co-hosted by the Association of Chinese Enterprises in Namibia and the Chinese Embassy in Namibia on Sunday, 20th January 2019. Over 700 Chinese and Namibian businesspersons keen on exploring new areas of trade attended the gala dinner to celebrate the start of the Chinese New Year known as the Year of the Pig. Chinese New Year is a Chinese festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar. It will officially be celebrated on Tuesday, 5 February this year. Commenting on the donation, Cloete said Standard Bank has built mutually beneficial business relations with Chinese companies and clientele here in Namibia, so sponsoring an event of such a nature

Namibia denounces “foreign powers” meddling in the affairs of Venezuela Namibia’s Ministry of International Affairs and Cooperation this week explained the country’s position on Venezuela’s deepening political crisis. Venezuelans are polarised between the country’s President, Nicolas Maduro, and the opposition leader Juan Guaido who declared himself interim President with country’s like the United States in support of that and several European countries calling for fresh elections to determine the country’s leadership. Namibia’s view is that foreign powers should be staying out of Venezuela’s domestic affairs in this regard and for the country to be allowed time to normalise the situation. The statement issued by the International Affairs and Cooperation Ministry reads as follows: “The Government of the Republic of Namibia has been following with great concern the political developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. The concern is that the political developments are arising from the unwarranted interference in the domestic afairs of Venezuela by foreign powers.

It is further noted that the elections were conducted in accordance with the domestic laws of Venezuela without any external interference. The domestic electoral laws of Venezuela provides mechanisms in which electoral disputes are to be addressed. Namibia calls on the international community to allow the people of Venezuela to resolve their internal issues in an amicable and peaceful manner and within the confines of the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. We further call on the international community to be impartial and not to take sides in the dispute. “Plastic wood” secured its place in the future of the world’s construction industries Isaac Chikose

When considering our natural resources and their use in our everyday lives, wood and plastic seem to be on the opposing sides from one another in terms of its material content. However, imagine a material made of both wood and plastic, a unique product produced in Swakopmund by Namgreenwood. Wood is a common building material. Both at the coast and the Namibian interior. Wood is not susceptible to corrosion and can be assembled with hammer and nails and no need for expensive welding machines or other power tools. The same goes for dismantling a wooden structure. Nevertheless, wood or timber contains moisture which on the long run can undermine its strength and structural integrity. The only solution for wood to be durable is to remove the most and to isolate the wood through varnish or paint. Plastic as a material on its own is also remarkable in that it is corrosion resistant. It also contains little chemicals and has a low electrical and high thermal conductivity. Plastic as a material is durable. So now understanding the strengths of both wood and plastic, what if these two materials are mixed? It is known as Wood Plastic Composite (WPC) the result of combining wood and plastic. WPC is a strong and durable material that is manufactured from recycled plastic and wood. Wood and plastic offcuts are grinded and combined in a process of melting the plastic and mixing the wood residue to the heated plastic. The end product is unique in its composition and is moulded into various aesthetically appealing and environmentally friendly products like decking, cladding, fencing, construction of any type of house and even bigger projects like construction lodges from this “plastic wood” products. According to Namgreenwood, the business recognised the need for its product not only in the conventional construction industry, but also for the informal housing market. In this instance the most important aspect is that plastic wood is

fire retardant and can drastically reduce the impact of shack fires. Products such as WPC secured a place in the future of construction. It is durable, unique, it can be used in any type or size construction project. Most importantly it is environmentally friendly and absorbs waste products into something handy, as opposed to these waste products finding their way to dump sites. ”A clean, green Namibia”, as Namgreenwood puts it.

Import vehicle menace........ Walvis Bay residents’ frustrations with import vehicles continue. Follow the recent delivery of a consignment of imported vehicles in the port of Walvis Bay, frustrations were growing. Instead of ensuring the vehicles leave Namibia within the required time frame after being cleared from the port of Walvis Bay, many of the vehicles are parked on public parking spots often for weeks at a time. In the pictures provided here, two imports, which were supposed to have already left Namibia’s to destination countries like Zambia and Zimbabwe, are parked in the customer parking area of the Metropolitan Plaza in the town’s

central business district. “These agents are mostly from Zambia and other SADC countries and they are abusing our town’s public parking spaces for free warehousing. That is not my only concern. These vehicles, especially the trucks, are often laden with household items and one wonders about issues like tax evasion in this instance”, the person said who alerted Namib Times to the two vehicles parked at Metropolitan Plaza. The person who complained said there is virtually no way to contact the person responsible for the parking of the vehicles and will now try to get in contact with the shipping line (right).

Accident weekend

The driver of a Toyota Hilux lost his life after he lost control over his vehicle on the way from Swakopmund to Walvis Bay on Saturday night. The out of control car slammed head-on into an oncoming Range-Rover. A third car (Run-X), also traveling from Swakopmund to Walvis Bay slammed into the wreckage pieces of the two cars, which forced the car off the road where it came to a stand still in the sand. It is alleged that the accident happened at around 23:45 on Saturday night. Mr A Vernasius was traveling alone in his white Toyota Hilux with registration number N17515S when the accident happened. The white Range-Rover with registration N777-768W, was driven by Mr Kurt DĂźval, who sustained serious injuries. The Range-Rover carried another three passengers, who sustained serious to moderate injuries. They were identified as Vainda van der Merwe, Schalk van der Merwe and Kate DĂźval. They were all admitted at Welwitchia Hospital. All passengers who was inside the Run-X only sustained slight injuries when the wreckage pieces laying on the road, forced the Run-X into the sand next to the road. These passengers were identified as Evelin Keis, Martina Ddaitwa and Odela Tsaraes. In another incident on Saturday at the T-junction of Dunes Mall at around 11:10, The rider of a white Yamaha motorcycle, belonging to Debonairs, Mr Johannes Elia Utah (30), sustained serious injuries when he crashed into a Range-Rover that was driven by Sabrina Selina Hawes (20). Miss Hawes was left unscratched. Mr Utah was transported to Windoek from Welwitchia Private Hospital because of the seriousness of his injuries.

Rössing Marathon 2019 The annual Rössing Marathon takes place in Swakopmund on Saturday, 9 February 2019, from the Pro-Ed Akademie sports fields in Ocean View, as part of the mine's drive to promote healthy habits and support positive lifestyles in the community. The popular event, supported by Namibia's elite athletes, is a certified race, permitted by Athletics Namibia. This year the event is sponsored for the 28th consecutive year by Rio Tinto Rössing Uranium and hosted by Swakop Striders Athletics Club. Events include a 42.2km full marathon, 21.1km half marathon, 10km run, 10km relay for invited uranium companies and 5km fun walk for the general public. Last year's winner of the Rössing Marathon was Mathews Mutanya of Zambia in a time of 2 hours 16 minutes and 52 seconds. The first Namibian athletes over the line were Tomas Rainhold of the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) sport club and Anna Amutoko, winning the marathon ladies Open category. The total prize monies for the event in 2019 amount to more than N$100 000. The first prize for the marathon is N$10 000 each for the men's and ladies Open winners, with the Namibian winners (male and female) each also receiving a N$20 000 in-kind development bonus in support of their sport career development throughout the year. An extra N$1 000 cash bonus is up for grabs should the marathon records be broken in the Open categories (male and female). The Rössing Marathon record of two hours, eleven minutes and twenty-three seconds (2:11:23) by Luketz Swartbooi was set in 1992. The general public is invited to join a scenic 5km fun walk to the beach on the day, with all proceeds going to the Cancer Association of Namibia in the fight against cancer. The 5km Fun Walk follows a new, scenic route from the Pro-Ed Akademie sports fields to the beach this year. The coastal community is invited to come out and support the event, which has become popular with social athletes, families and corporate entities for team building and a bit of light exercise in support of a good cause. The Fun Walk includes an exciting competition for best themed/most original costume, funniest hat, youngest walker (excluding toddlers in prams & pets), oldest walker, tallest walker and cutest pet walker. Invited uranium companies in the region will once again compete in a 10km uranium relay event, which is aimed at building friendships among the industry's employees. Proceeds collected from entries and donations for this event as well as the Uranium Relay for invited uranium companies will go to the Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN) for the fight against cancer in Namibia. Early entry fees - up to Wednesday, 6 February 2019 at noon - for the Marathon and Half Marathon are N$80; For the 10 km Run N$60; and for the Uranium Relay event N$100 (per team of two runners). Late registration will take place on Friday, 8 February 2019 at the venue, from 16:00 to 20:00. Late entry fees are N$100 for the Marathon and Half Marathon; N$80 for the 10km Run; and N$120 for the Uranium Relay (per team of two runners). All participating athletes will receive a race number during registration. All race packs MUST be collected during late registration on Friday, 8 February, as no athletes without race numbers will be allowed to take part in the event. Registration for the 5km Fun Walk takes place at the venue on Saturday, 9 February, from 08:00 to 09:00. In an effort to make the event safer and avoid heavy traffic in the town area, the start/finish point of the Rössing Marathon moves to the ProEd Akademie sports fields in Ocean View this year. Runners will start at the sports field and run out onto the Henties Bay road as in previous years. Various water points and race marshals will be posted along the route. Motorists are cautioned to please be on the look-out for runners during the event, from 07:00 to 12:00 on Saturday, 9 February. Walvis Bay parkrun turns one

One year ago, on 3 February 2018 the second parkrun in Namibia was founded in Walvis Bay, hosted by South African Parkrun CEO and running legend, Bruce Fordyce. This Saturday, 2 February marks the Walvis Bay parkrun's first birthday.

Saturday will see a special birthday celebration, and everyone is invited to take part and receive a special commemorative “medal”. All first-time participants must register once off and bring along their printed barcode, which is scanned afterwards. This Saturday there will be a laptop set up to assist any participants who have not yet registered. Bruce Fordyce opened the parkrun in Walvis Bay with 338 runners and walkers taking part. This opening was a huge success and surpassed all expectations. The first parkrun in Namibia was founded in Swakopmund on 8 April 2017. Currently there are 1640 members registered in the Walvis Bay parkrun with roughly 150 runners and walkers who takes part every Saturday. The number of people that participate every Saturday varies according to the weather and other activities in town. “We do have some very loyal parkrunners and saw twentyfive die-hard runners and walkers arrive during terrible east weather on 7 July last year”, Event Director, Michelle Wilson told the Namib Times. Michelle Wilson, together with a group of volunteers decided to do something to bring the community together that will also be beneficial in improving the health of the community. The level of fitness in so many people improved considerably according to Michelle Wilson. “Some participants started by slowly walking when parkrun just started and now, they already run the whole five kilometers” Since the parkrun started the number of people walking and running along the lagoon walkway increased considerably. Michelle went on by saying: “It makes me happy to see people coming together on a Saturday morning to be active. Some people come to spend quality time with their families while others are more serious, wanting to improve their weekly times.” Michelle Wilson has also been chosen as the parkrun Regional Ambassador for Namibia. She went on by saying: “I am now working on starting more parkruns throughout Namibia, with Windhoek hopefully being next”. The parkrun takes place every Saturday at 08:00 in the park in front of Flamingo Villas Boutique Hotel. Runners and walkers then follow a 5km out and back route along the lagoon walkway. It is a beautiful scene and an easy, flat route. Flamingo Villas Boutique Hotel has partnered with parkrun and they offer all parkrunners coffee and hot chocolate at N$15.00 each and 15% discount on breakfast. It is the perfect partnership, and runners and walkers can walk across the road and enjoy a breakfast and coffee with their families, with some beautiful views of the lagoon. The parkrun is run completely by volunteers who give up their time to make parkrun possible. “We are very thankful for all our volunteers. There are about 40 active volunteers who are on the roster, with each person volunteering every 4-5 weeks”, according to Michelle.
