Students progress from Early Years Foundation at our pre-school in Sai Kung, through English National Curriculum adapted for Hong Kong, to internationally recognised IGCSE qualifications and then to our new, exclusive Sixth Form Centre at Hung Hom. Designed specifically for Years 12 and 13, it provides a mature, independent learning environment while retaining the personal support that defines our school. Uniquely for Hong Kong, our Sixth Form offers three post-16 pathways—the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, A Levels and BTEC— allowing us to build programmes around individual strengths, learning styles and aspirations.

home to our Year 1 – Year 6 students. Some of you are joining us from our Pre School in Sai Kung, but for many of you I know this is your ﬁrst welcome to our school community. We value our school community immensely and please know that you are joining a very supportive and dedicated team of Primary professionals. Our staff are all highly trained and skilled and go the extra mile for all our pupils.

Our parent body and the Parent Teacher Association are always looking for ways to support our staff and pupils in their learning and in their additional activities. THE PRIMARY CURRICULUM AT NAIS HK Our Hong Kong primary school curriculum is based on the English National Curriculum and is designed to provide the highest academic quality of education. We take the best aspects of this consistent and rigorous framework and adapt it to ensure that our primary school curriculum is relevant for children growing up in Hong Kong, whilst also placing a strong emphasis on educating global citizens. The English National Curriculum is used by over 30,000 international schools in the UK and overseas, which brings reassurance to parents and stability to students – both important factors when moving between countries. Where does Primary ﬁt into the school curriculum? The English National Curriculum is split into segments known as Key Stages.

Our children prepare for the University of Cambridge IGCSE qualiﬁcations (Year 10-11) and the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBDP) (Year 12-13).

LEARNING AT OUR PRIMARY SCHOOL IN HONG KONG The pedagogical approach at Nord Anglia International School Hong Kong emphasises the needs and targets of each individual child. A positive mindset is encouraged to build conﬁdence and ensure success.

There is a rigorous development of English and Maths skills, while all other subjects are dealt with in a variety of ways. We use a thematic approach to learning, where possible, as we believe that learning needs to be contextualised for children to make connections and make sense of the world. However, we also believe that some important aspects of learning are best taught in a stand-alone fashion. Our curriculum is both knowledge and skills rich, while also putting a strong emphasis on values. Our talented teachers use judgements about whether learning should be enquiry-based, child-led or project-based and we always follow a child-centred approach, seeking to inspire a love of learning for all. Pupils are taught Art, Music, Drama, PE and Chinese by specialist teachers throughout the primary school, Spanish and French are offered in Year 5 and Year 6 respectively. We take a holistic approach to each child’s education to ensure we develop wellrounded students who are responsible citizens, showing respect and making an effective contribution to society. Detailed curriculum information per year group is shared with parents via our online platform Toddle. You can see the outlines of the themes studied below. The Personal Social Citizenship Health Education (PSCHE) unit at the start of each year focuses on the emotional well-being of our children and ensures they start the year healthy and happy and ready to learn.

All children are taught the subjects of Maths*, English*, Science*, Computing*, History, Geography, Gl ob al Ci ti zenship , Drama, Music, Physical Education (PE), Art, Chinese, French (in Year 6 ) and Spanish (in Year 5 ). STEAM education is threaded through our curriculum and supported by our collaboration with MIT. (*core subjects) In Key Stage One (Years 1 & 2) children are taught key skills such as Guided Reading, Phonics and Mental Maths. We place a strong emphasis on the development of core skills in Numeracy and Literacy. Teachers ensure that fundamental building blocks are embedded and reinforced regularly. Enjoyment of learning and building important skills in communication, language and literacy, and social and emotional development are still key areas, and our teachers deliver an exciting curriculum to support this learning. This builds on the foundations started in the Early Years and Year 1.

Teachers plan themes that reﬂect the interests of the children in each class, and a balance is provided between creative and physical activities, ensuring that the curriculum develops the whole child. Learning outside of the classroom is an important part of our children’s development and this is supported and enhanced through trips, visits, whole school events and theme days.

In Key Stage Two (Years 3, 4, 5 and 6), pupils continue to be supported in reaching their full potential through an individualised approach to their learning. High academic standards are maintained through National Curriculum key objectives and pupils are supported or challenged as appropriate. We provide many opportunities for children to learn beyond the classroom and develop new skills. Residential trips are also introduced in Year 3, providing an additional opportunity for experiential education. In Upper Primary, our pupils begin to experience the additional languages on offer in Secondary School with ‘taster years’ of Spanish (in Year 5) and French (in Year 6). All pupils continue with Mandarin alongside these additional languages. This structure sup- ports our pupils as they start Year 7 where they then select two languages (from Mandarin, Spanish & French) to take forwards into Secondary school.

PASTORAL CARE The social, emotional, physical and moral wellbeing of your child is equally as important as their academic progress at NAIS HK, and pastoral care lies at the heart of our school, overseen by our Assistant Head of Primary (Pastoral), Mr. Stephen Holt. You will receive an introductory email from your child’s Class Teacher. They will be your ﬁrst point of contact for pastoral concerns and, as the adult who will get to know your child the best, understanding their social and academic needs, they will be able to help you with any questions you have regarding your child. If you would like to meet with your child’s Class Teacher, please email them for an appointment rather than trying to catch them at the beginning or end of the school day which may detract their attention from the pupils in their care. Please do remember, however, that teachers may not be able to respond to emails during school hours so, if you need to get an urgent message to the teacher or your child, please contact Reception.

Underpinning the Pastoral Care at NAIS HK is the House system which encompasses all three campuses. Each pupil is allocated to one of four Houses when they join NAIS HK: Balmoral, Caernarfon, Sandringham or Windsor. The House system is very important to our school and there is a real sense of community and comradeship within each. The House system is central to everything we do. House Points are awarded to pupils for a variety of reasons, for example to recognise excellent academic performance and effort, positive behaviour or for showing a caring attitude and approach in school. These House Points go towards a termly trophy, and eventually a highly contested End of Year trophy. Pupils meet regularly for House assemblies which enables the children to build connections and forge friendships with their peers across the school. Throughout the year, we have a variety of house events, in which your child will participate and the Head of House will work in partnership with your child’s Class Teacher to oversee their wellbeing. You will be notiﬁed of which House your child has been allocated to before their ﬁrst day and introduced to their respective Head of House. Pupils remain in their Houses throughout their time at the school and siblings are usually allocated to the same House. 10

SAFEGUARDING YOUR CHILD There is no issue the school takes more seriously than the safety and wellbeing of our pupils. We have security guards and cameras throughout the campus to ensure unauthorised personnel do not enter the school grounds and all visitors entering the school during the day are required to sign in and out with Reception. Our children are safe during at school during the day and, with your assistance, we can continue our high standard of security. All pupils will be issued with a Pupil Identity card, and you will also receive a ‘pick-up card’ for your child during their ﬁrst week. This pick-up card will need to be shown whenever your child is collected, whether from the Lam Tin campus or from the school bus. Children will not be released into the custody of anyone unauthorised to collect your child or where the pick-up card is not provided. NAISHK has a comprehensive Safeguarding Policy in place to protect your child which is available to view in the Policy section of our website. All adults who come into contact with children at the school are required to adhere to our Safeguarding Policy and all staff receive regular training to keep them up to date and informed with procedures. COMMUNICATIONS AND CONTACT A strong partnership between parents and teachers is essential to the success of your child at NAIS HK. In terms of the academic development and pastoral wellbeing of your child, your Class Teacher will be the ﬁrst point of enquiry for most questions and concerns as they are the person who will know your child the best. If you have a concern which you feel requires attention at a senior level, please contact your Head of Year in the ﬁrst instance. We like to keep you informed so our whole school Parent Update is sent out on a weekly basis via email and provides information on current happenings and future events. As most of our communication is sent out via email, it is important that we always have your most up-to-date contact details on ﬁle including at least two local contact telephone numbers in case of emergencies. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Questions about the school day What time does my child need to be at school? As the Primary day starts at 7:50am, we encourage pupils to arrive at 7:45am in order to have time to settle and be ready for their day. The school doors do, however, open at 7:30am to allow pupils into the building should they arrive earlier. Primary pupils should make their way straight to their classrooms upon arrival. Can my child eat breakfast at school? We do not provide breakfast facilities in the Lam Tin campus so please make sure that your child has eaten before they come to school. Is there a school bus that my child can use? Our school buses serve key locations around Hong Kong. Seats are subject to availability and priority will be given to Primary pupils wishing to use the bus service in both directions. The updated bus routes for the next academic year have been conﬁrmed and uploaded to our website. Pupils arriving by school bus will be escorted from the bus to school at the beginning of the day by our teaching staff, ensuring safety at all times.

Our buses are operated by an external company, Jacksons. We expect the same high standards of behaviour from our pupils using the buses as they would have in school. All buses have a bus monitor, who is responsible for monitoring safety on the bus and who will contact parents if the bus is delayed for any length of time. Can I bring my child to school? If you are dropping off or collecting your child from school, please be aware that, for the safety of all of our pupils, we do not have a designated ‘drop off zone’. It is very important that cars do not stop directly in front of the school under any circumstances. There is a multi-storey car park located just behind the school (car park entrance is on Pik Wan Road) and two car parks within easy walking distance. Your co-operation with this will be greatly appreciated. If you are accompanying your child into school, you must use the main entrance at the front of the building, which opens at 7:30am. You may accompany your child to their classroom however, in order to allow the children to settle themselves ready for their day, we ask that parents do not stay. 15

What happens at the end of the school day? If you are collecting your child from school, the front doors will open to allow you into the campus to collect your child from the playground at 2:45pm. Please make sure that you have your pick-up card available for security purposes.

Pupils who are travelling home by school bus will be escorted to the bus by an adult at 2:45pm. When the bus arrives at the designated bus stop you will be required to show your pick-up card to collect your child from the bus. Can my child go home alone? To prepare pupils for their transition to Secondary school, pupils in Year 6 may make their way home independently with their parent’s permission. Pupils whose parents have given their consent will be issued with a ‘Home Alone’ card. All families (new and current) will receive an email from school before the start of term where you will be able to give permission. Students from Y1-Y5 must be either picked up or take the school bus. What if I am running late to collect my child? It is very important that you collect your child promptly, whether from the bus or school, in order to avoid any distress. We do understand, however, that occasionally something may happen to delay you. If this is the case, please telephone Reception as soon as possible. Please note that if no one collects a child from the bus stop, then the bus will bring them back to school after the journey is complete. What if I need to temporarily change my pick-up arrangements? It is essential that we have an accurate record of who is authorised to collect your child as we will not release them to the custody of anyone unless we have received formal written/verbal notiﬁcation from the child’s parent in advance. If you need to change arrangements, please notify us in advance by emailing the Class Teacher, copying in Reception and the bus-coordinator the day before. The person nominated to collect your child will need to provide their HKID card so that we can verify their identity. If circumstances change on the day, please email the teacher and also telephone Reception to ensure that the message has been received.

Will my child be able to take part in Extra Curricular Activities after school? At NAIS HK we offer a wide variety of Extra Curricular Activities across the Primary and Secondary schools. ECAs run across three afternoons per week (Monday-Wednesday), with some specialised activities also running before school and during lunchtimes (Music and Sport teams). To ensure a balance of activities and to match the individual interests of each child, we theme our activities under different ‘umbrellas’: Sport, Health and Exercise; Performance and Creative Arts; Puzzlers, thinkers and debaters; and Science, Technology and Engineering. We believe that this breadth of activities across each term gives your children the chance to explore and develop new skills, interests and talents in order to become well rounded individuals. These activities may comprise a mixture of free, paid and by invitation only activities. Sign up for ECAs is made online through Firefly on a first come/first served basis. You will be provided with a list of available activities and information on how to sign up online once the ECA timetable has been finalised. How will my child get home after their ECA? For those children attending ECAs, there is a late bus available. Please refer to our website for cost and route information. If you are collecting your child from school after their ECA, please arrive promptly at the designated finish time and wait in the foyer area with your pick-up card to hand. This will allow us to dismiss the children quickly and safely.

Can my child bring their mobile phone to school? We understand that some of our older pupils in Year 6 may need phones as a method of communication, especially if they are travelling home independently. However, mobile phones are not allowed to be used whilst on school premises. If your child does carry a mobile phone, please ensure that it is switched off during the day. If your child needs to contact you, they can do so at Reception. The school will always contact you immediately should any emergency arise regarding your child.

How can I get involved in school life? There are many ways that you can support your child and the school and we particularly enjoy welcoming parents into school for class assemblies, year group productions and other key events. At NAIS HK, we also have an active Parent Teacher Association (PTA) which operates across all three campuses.

The PTA is a vibrant group of parents, teachers and members of staff who are committed to enhancing the spirit of our school community by engaging the children, parents and teachers in fun, interesting and exciting ways. The PTA are always on the look-out for new faces to join the team and, whatever be your talent, they are bound to have a need for it! You can also get involved by becoming a Class Coordinator for your child’s class. Class Coordinators help create a communication channel between the school, PTA and parents, as well as help create a nurturing and supportive community. We have maximum of 2 coordinators for each class. The PTA can be contacted via email at ptanaishk@gmail.com if you have any questions about getting involved or ideas that you would like to share.

Questions about break and lunch arrangements When will my child be able to eat? Primary pupils have a thirty-minute breaktime in the morning and then a sixty-minute lunch break later in the day.

Can my child bring their own food to school? Yes, we aim to give our parents ﬂexibility with lunch options so pupils can bring their own food to school. As a school we promote healthy eating and environmental awareness, so encourage our families to make sensible, nutritious choices and to refrain from sending in ﬁzzy drinks or sweets. Please note that we are a NO NUTS school, as we have children attending the school that have life-threatening allergies. How can my child purchase food from the cafeteria? The Cafeteria provides a daily selection of healthy, nutritious lunches. Menu details are sent out in the weekly Parent Update email. In addition to the hot lunch, there are other choices available such as sandwiches, salads and fruits.

Children in Years 1, 2 and 3 must order and pay in advance for their meals. Order forms and payment cheques should be handed in to your Class Teacher. Pupils in Year 4, 5 & 6 can also order and pay in advance for their meals using the same system as years 1, 2 & 3. Pupils in Years 4, 5 & 6 can also choose their food on the day and pay with their Octopus card. Does the school provide drinks? Cold ﬁltered water is freely available around the school and pupils are encouraged to bring reusable water bottles which they can reﬁll regularly. Can I deliver food to my child during the school day? Unfortunately, no. Please send all food in with your child in the morning or arrange for them to purchase from the cafeteria as we are unable to facilitate individual food deliveries. 19

Questions relating to attendance and health Can my child take a day off? Regular daily attendance is expected, although sometimes absence is unavoidable. All requests for absence must be authorised in advance. Should you need to take your child out of school for a reason other than illness, please email your Class Teacher, copying the Head of Year to apply for approval. What should I do if my child is sick? Please email your Class Teacher cc’ing Reception (and bus@nais.hk if they usually get the bus) on the day if your child is not able to attend due to illness. If your child has had vomiting or diarrhoea, please keep them at home for 24 hours. If they have a contagious illness, such as ﬂu or chicken pox, please keep them home until a doctor certiﬁes that they are no longer contagious. Please advise us and keep us up to date with any medical problems your child may have, particularly when there is a contagious condition or an allergy to materials or food. The medical information form must be completed and returned to admissions prior to entry.

What happens if my child is injured or unwell whilst they are at school? We have a qualiﬁed nurse and a number of advanced ﬁrst-aiders on the school premises at all times in case of accidents or illness. Most minor illnesses and accidents are dealt with at school by the nurse. In cases of serious illnesses or accidents, parents will be contacted immediately and your child will be taken to a hospital/doctor of your choice. My child needs to take medication whilst at school, how does this work? Medication will only be given in special circumstances and must be clearly labelled with your child’s name and dosage. If you would like us to administer medication to your child at school, please contact your Class Teacher to discuss arrangements. All medication must be securely stored by the nurse; under no circumstances can a child self-administer or carry medicine on their person whilst at school.

Questions relating to uniform What should my child wear to school? It is compulsory for all pupils to wear uniform which we believe is an important part of our identity, fosters a sense of belonging and removes barriers. A copy of our uniform policy can be found here. Pupils should wear formal uniform to school; PE kit is to be worn when they are timetabled to have PE lessons. Your Class Teacher will provide you with a timetable detailing PE days and swimming days.

Additional information: Pupils should wear plain black leather shoes with formal uniform and predominantly white trainers and white socks with PE kit.

Long hair should be tied back for safety reasons and there should be no jewellery (except for small stud earrings) or makeup. Excessive hair colouring (colours considered as non-natural hair colours, for example, blue, green) and excessive hair styles are not allowed. We operate a year-round ‘no hat, no play’ policy, so please make sure that your child has a school cap as we like to keep our children sun-safe. All belongings should be clearly labelled with your child’s name and class. What happens on swimming days? On swimming days, your child should wear formal uniform and bring their swimming kit to change into (kit comprises school swimming costume, school swimming hat, goggles and a towel) Where can I buy uniform? TYPHOON & HEAVY RAIN PROCEDURES As a school, we are bound to follow the regulations, ordinances and directives of the Education Bureau (EDB) of Hong Kong. In all cases, we will abide by the warnings as required by the Hong Kong Government and as issued through the Hong Kong Observatory. When there are Typhoon Signals and Rainstorm warnings, the Education Bureau makes a decision on such mornings at 6:00 am and issues this information to the media. If the school is to be closed, we will post a notice on the school website and issue the information by all possible means. Please make sure your helpers are aware of these procedures. If the signal is raised before school starts, the following procedures will operate: Typhoon Signal Number 1

All classes operate normally

Typhoon Signal Number 3

All classes operate normally unless advised other wise

Typhoon Signal Number 8 or above

School is closed and all classes are virtual

Amber Rainstorm

All classes operate normally

Red Rainstorm

School is closed and all classes are virtual

Black Rainstorm

School is closed and all classes are virtual

If the signal is raised during school hours, the following procedures will operate: Typhoon Signal Number 1 or 3

All classes operate normally with the usual dismissal times (including extra-curricular activities) unless advised otherwise.

Typhoon Signal Number 8 or above

All classes will be dismissed. (Notice of the signal being raised is issued to schools several hours before it is hoisted, giving time to make arrangements to get pupils home safely.)

Amber Rainstorm

All Classes operate normally

Red or Black Rainstorm

All classes remain in school until the warning is removed, and buses are authorized for safe travel. Parents are free to come and collect your child if it safe for you to do so.

Radio, television and online announcements are made when schools are closed due to typhoon or red/black rainstorm warnings. If children have already set off for school, we will accept the children who arrive when school is closed. These children will be retained until it is safe for a parent or helper to collect them.
